[0:28] Speaker 1: joining me again. My name's Tom, and I'm so happy
[0:33] Speaker 1: you're here for my favorite part of any day, story time.
[0:40] Speaker 1: In this episode, Vanessa will be sharing the tale of
[0:43] Speaker 1: a family preparing their Thanksgiving feast. Two children named Primrose
[0:51] Speaker 1: and Pepper will help their parents cook the special meal.
[0:58] Speaker 1: It's a simple story about simple, traditional pleasures and the
[1:03] Speaker 1: joy they bring. And whether you partake in Thanksgiving or not,
[1:10] Speaker 1: I think you'll love hearing all about this celebration. So
[1:17] Speaker 1: let's get ready to imagine our story by taking a
[1:21] Speaker 1: soothing breath together inhale, slowly and exhale. Make sure you're
[1:37] Speaker 1: comfy and ready to listen. And if you so wish,
[1:44] Speaker 1: you can close your eyes. Now we are ready, so
[1:52] Speaker 1: begin to imagine our warm kitchen filled with delicious, warming
[1:59] Speaker 1: fragrance says of cooking food. This is where our story begins.
[2:27] Speaker 2: Even before Primrose opened her eyes, she knew there was
[2:33] Speaker 2: something special about today. She snuggled deeper under her soft
[2:40] Speaker 2: blanket and squeezed her eyes shut as she tried to remember.
[2:48] Speaker 2: And then it came to her today was Thanksgiving, and
[2:56] Speaker 2: not only that, today she and her twin brother Pepper
[3:03] Speaker 2: were going to get to help make the special dinner.
[3:09] Speaker 2: She heard Pepper turn over in the bed beside her.
[3:15] Speaker 2: She opened her eyes and looked across at her brother.
[3:20] Speaker 2: His touzled hair was just visible peeping out over his blanket.
[3:28] Speaker 2: Bright daylight shone into the window of the little room
[3:32] Speaker 2: they shared. It was a pretty room with two matching beds,
[3:39] Speaker 2: two matching bookcases, and two matching rugs to warm their toes.
[3:46] Speaker 2: When they stepped out of bed in the mornings, Pepper,
[3:52] Speaker 2: she said to him, Pepper, wake up, it's Thanksgiving Day.
[4:00] Speaker 2: Pepper rolled over and groaned, then sat straight up in bed,
[4:06] Speaker 2: his covers going flying. Happy Thanksgiving, he said in a
[4:14] Speaker 2: very sleepy voice. His hair stuck up straight all over
[4:21] Speaker 2: his head, his pajama shirt was turned sideways, and his
[4:29] Speaker 2: forehead was all wrinkled up from trying to open his
[4:34] Speaker 2: sleepy morning eyes. He looked so funny that Primrose had
[4:41] Speaker 2: to laugh. Pepper giggled too. He didn't mind that she'd laughed.
[4:50] Speaker 2: They understood one another, even if they did disagree every
[4:55] Speaker 2: now and then, and right now, she gave him a look,
[5:03] Speaker 2: and she knew he understood. Her look was saying, we
[5:09] Speaker 2: should get dressed now and get this party started. And
[5:16] Speaker 2: so they did. They put on their clothes and went
[5:21] Speaker 2: out to find their parents. They found their mother drinking
[5:28] Speaker 2: a cup of coffee at the kitchen table and their
[5:32] Speaker 2: father feeding their puppy. They both hugged their parents and
[5:39] Speaker 2: asked about getting started on preparing the feast. Hold your horses, said,
[5:48] Speaker 2: Daddy will get started in a few minutes. First, it's
[5:56] Speaker 2: time for breakfast. Amrose and Pepper sat down at the
[6:02] Speaker 2: table and let Daddy give them some food and a
[6:07] Speaker 2: glass of orange juice. And sure enough, after a few minutes,
[6:17] Speaker 2: their parents agreed to begin preparing the Thanksgiving feast. The
[6:24] Speaker 2: children helped gather the ingredients they needed. They lined them
[6:31] Speaker 2: all up neatly on the kitchen countertop, which their father
[6:37] Speaker 2: had scrubbed until it shone. Then they washed their hands
[6:45] Speaker 2: in warm, soapy water and dried them on a soft
[6:52] Speaker 2: fluffee towel, and just like that, they were ready to
[7:01] Speaker 2: start making the most important meal of the year to begin,
[7:10] Speaker 2: Daddy made stuffing while Mama got the turkey ready for
[7:15] Speaker 2: the oven. Daddy let Primrose and pepper stir butter into
[7:23] Speaker 2: the stuffing and shaken spices that smelled strong and thanksgivingsh
[7:32] Speaker 2: Primrose leaned in close to take a sniff, and the
[7:37] Speaker 2: spices made her sneeze. The children and Daddy laughed. Bless you,
[7:47] Speaker 2: said Mama, laughing too. Once the turkey was in the oven,
[7:54] Speaker 2: the twins helped Daddy wash a bunch of potatoes and yea.
[8:02] Speaker 2: Then Daddy showed them how to peel the potatoes. They
[8:08] Speaker 2: took turns using a special peeler that was made for children,
[8:14] Speaker 2: which had a little handle just right for their small hands.
[8:23] Speaker 2: They ran the peeler carefully over the potatoes. A mound
[8:29] Speaker 2: of peels piled up on the countertop, getting bigger and
[8:35] Speaker 2: bigger as the pile of potatoes waiting to be peeled
[8:41] Speaker 2: grew smaller and smaller. While they peeled, their mother began
[8:49] Speaker 2: cooking cranberries and water and sugar on the stove to
[8:54] Speaker 2: make cranberry sauce. She stirred and stirred, and the pot
[9:02] Speaker 2: of cranberries began to let off clouds of steam. It
[9:09] Speaker 2: smelled sweet and fruity and delicious, And as Mama stirred
[9:20] Speaker 2: and the children pealed, Mama told them stories. She told
[9:28] Speaker 2: them stories about Thanksgivings when she was a little girl,
[9:34] Speaker 2: and the funny time her dog got into the pumpkin pie.
[9:40] Speaker 2: She told them stories about when they were little, like
[9:45] Speaker 2: the time Pepper fell asleep right at the table in
[9:50] Speaker 2: the middle of Thanksgiving dinner. He had been so tired
[9:57] Speaker 2: that his eyes just troop and trooped, getting heavier and heavier.
[10:07] Speaker 2: Mama said, then his head had begun to nod, and
[10:16] Speaker 2: not until it dropped right onto his plate of pumpkin pie,
[10:25] Speaker 2: and he had started to snore right there in the
[10:31] Speaker 2: middle of the Thanksgiving feast. They all laughed and listened
[10:38] Speaker 2: and peeled and stirred, and then Daddy said something in
[10:46] Speaker 2: a thoughtful sort of voice. You know, he said, this
[10:54] Speaker 2: is really what Thanksgiving is all about, which isn't really
[11:01] Speaker 2: about the dinner, although that's wonderful too. It is about
[11:08] Speaker 2: being together with people you love. Primrose thought, for a
[11:15] Speaker 2: moment she knew just what Daddy meant. Thanksgiving is a feeling,
[11:25] Speaker 2: she said, not just a day. Mama and Daddy smiled
[11:32] Speaker 2: at her and then they smiled at each other, and
[11:37] Speaker 2: Primrose felt proud and happy. This was something she would
[11:45] Speaker 2: always remember, she thought all her life. She was so
[11:54] Speaker 2: lost in her thoughts that she didn't notice they had
[11:58] Speaker 2: finished feeling all the potatoes. She reached absent mindedly for
[12:06] Speaker 2: another potato, and her hand touched the empty plate. Pepper
[12:14] Speaker 2: pointed out her mistake, and they giggled again. Then they
[12:21] Speaker 2: helped scrape all the potato peelings into the compost bin.
[12:29] Speaker 2: Daddy explained to them how the peels would help make
[12:33] Speaker 2: dirt that people could use to grow new plants, maybe
[12:38] Speaker 2: even new potatoes. They rinsed the potatoes again to get
[12:45] Speaker 2: off any leftover dirty smudges, and then Pepper and Primrose
[12:51] Speaker 2: put them in a big pot. They filled the pot
[12:57] Speaker 2: with water that splashed and sprayld as it flowed over
[13:02] Speaker 2: the potatoes. Then they shook salt and garlic into the pond,
[13:10] Speaker 2: and Daddy set it to boil at the back of
[13:13] Speaker 2: the stove. Next up was a part of the preparations
[13:20] Speaker 2: that the twins were especially looking forward to, making pies.
[13:29] Speaker 2: They stirred together flour and sugar, salt, butter, and water
[13:36] Speaker 2: in a mixing bowl. They used something called a pastry
[13:43] Speaker 2: cutter to get the butter mixed in. Mama finished off
[13:50] Speaker 2: the mixing for them, and when they had a smooth
[13:54] Speaker 2: ball of dough, they set it in the refrigerator to chill.
[14:01] Speaker 2: They would leave it awhile, and then once the dough
[14:05] Speaker 2: was nice and cold, they would roll it out to
[14:09] Speaker 2: make crusts for their pies. While the dough was cooling,
[14:16] Speaker 2: they set to work making the pie fillings. Pepper wanted
[14:23] Speaker 2: to make a pumpkin pie. Heel love the smell of
[14:29] Speaker 2: it and the way it tasted like Thanksgiving. He supposed
[14:35] Speaker 2: that was because they only ever had pumpkin pie at
[14:39] Speaker 2: Thanksgiving time. Sometimes not having something all the time made
[14:47] Speaker 2: it even more special, he thought. Daddy gave him a
[14:53] Speaker 2: bowl of cooked, mashed pumpkin. Pepper cracked some egg and
[15:01] Speaker 2: poured them into the pumpkin. Next, he poured in some cream.
[15:10] Speaker 2: The cream was white and smooth, and as it swirled
[15:15] Speaker 2: into the bowl, the pumpkin turned a lighter, creamy orange color.
[15:24] Speaker 2: Pepper measured sugar in a measuring cup and then poured
[15:29] Speaker 2: it into the bowl a waterfall of powdery white sugar. Next,
[15:38] Speaker 2: he took a little, tiny measuring spoons made out of
[15:43] Speaker 2: shiny silver metal and scooped up spices. They smelled like
[15:50] Speaker 2: pumpkin pie. Pepper wondered if he was starting to get hungry.
[16:00] Speaker 2: He stirred up the pumpkin pie filling. Primrose was busily
[16:05] Speaker 2: cutting apples or an apple pie. She had a special
[16:12] Speaker 2: children's cutter with a wide handle so she could press
[16:16] Speaker 2: it down on pieces of apple, slicing them neatly into
[16:22] Speaker 2: smaller pieces. Daddy would cut an apple into a few
[16:28] Speaker 2: big pieces, and then Primrose would slice those up small
[16:34] Speaker 2: enough for pie. They made a good team, she and Daddy.
[16:42] Speaker 2: When they finished all the apple slices went into another
[16:48] Speaker 2: big pot. Then into the pot went lemon juice that
[16:57] Speaker 2: Primrose squeezed from lemons off their backyard tree, and brown
[17:04] Speaker 2: sugar that smelled like yumminess, and melted butter, and just
[17:12] Speaker 2: a sprinkling of salt. She stirred it all up as
[17:19] Speaker 2: it cooked over a low flame, and the kitchen began
[17:24] Speaker 2: to smell like apple pie along with pumpkin Thanksgiving dinner
[17:32] Speaker 2: was coming along well. Pumpkin pie was delicious and oh
[17:41] Speaker 2: so Thanksgiving apple pie was delicious and oh so good
[17:49] Speaker 2: with vanilla ice cream, but that was not all the
[17:55] Speaker 2: pies they would make for their feast. Oh no, they
[18:01] Speaker 2: needed to have blueberry pie two they all agreed, and
[18:07] Speaker 2: cherry and Mama's favorite pecan. And so they continued to
[18:17] Speaker 2: work together merrily, and after a while, Primrose suggested they
[18:25] Speaker 2: sing songs while they worked. So soon the kitchen filled
[18:33] Speaker 2: with their voices, little ones and grown up ones, along
[18:39] Speaker 2: with the sound of stirring and the feeling of warm steam,
[18:46] Speaker 2: and the smells of cooking blueberries and ripe cherries and
[18:51] Speaker 2: sweet spices, the sounds and the smells of Thanksgiving. When
[19:02] Speaker 2: at last all the pie fillings were done and sat
[19:07] Speaker 2: cooling in a neat line on the kitchen countertop, Mama
[19:13] Speaker 2: said it was time for a break, so Pepper and
[19:19] Speaker 2: Primrose had a snack and a glass of milk, and
[19:24] Speaker 2: then Daddy took them and their puppy on a walk
[19:29] Speaker 2: to the park. The park was just a funny little
[19:35] Speaker 2: field with dandelions growing and lumpy ground underneath the grass.
[19:44] Speaker 2: It was surrounded by trees and bushes. There was no
[19:50] Speaker 2: play structure and no sports field, and no concrete, and
[19:59] Speaker 2: yet the twins were never bored there. They threw balls
[20:06] Speaker 2: for their puppy to chase, and they tossed balls to
[20:11] Speaker 2: each other. They ran and jumped and rased each other
[20:18] Speaker 2: across the field. They explored the trees and bushes and
[20:26] Speaker 2: found sticks that became magic wands or walking sticks or
[20:34] Speaker 2: whatever they could imagine. They tried to do cartwheels and
[20:41] Speaker 2: fell down in a heap laughing. In other words, they
[20:48] Speaker 2: did what they wanted, and they had a good time.
[20:55] Speaker 2: When they were all worn out and their puppy was
[20:59] Speaker 2: flopped down in the shade with his tongue lolling out,
[21:04] Speaker 2: Daddy said it was time to go home. Back at home,
[21:11] Speaker 2: they would soon roll out their pine dough and prepare
[21:15] Speaker 2: the yummy desserts. First, though, they were ready for a
[21:22] Speaker 2: bit of a nap. Daddy said he needed a rest
[21:28] Speaker 2: most of all. Then Primrose and Pepper didn't argue cooking
[21:38] Speaker 2: was hard work. They all agreed and they wanted to
[21:44] Speaker 2: be rested and ready for the big feast. They piled
[21:50] Speaker 2: into Daddy's and Mama's big soft bed. Primrose was on
[21:58] Speaker 2: one side, Pepper was on the other side, and Daddy
[22:06] Speaker 2: was smack dab in the middle. Primrose laid her head
[22:12] Speaker 2: on Daddy's shoulder and felt how big and strong and
[22:19] Speaker 2: warm it was. Pepper laid his head on the pillow
[22:27] Speaker 2: and felt how big and soft and silky it was.
[22:34] Speaker 2: They closed their eyes and Daddy spoke to them softly
[22:40] Speaker 2: in his low, deep voice. He told them of the
[22:47] Speaker 2: farms where the food grew that they were making into
[22:52] Speaker 2: Thanksgiving dinner. He told them of the people who picked
[22:58] Speaker 2: the food and the way they filled big trucks to
[23:04] Speaker 2: bring it to the store. He spoke of cherry trees
[23:10] Speaker 2: and blueberry bushes, and the hot sun that had ripened
[23:17] Speaker 2: the food all summer long. He told about the harvest,
[23:25] Speaker 2: which meant the time when the food was picked at last,
[23:30] Speaker 2: after people worked hard to plant it, water it, and
[23:36] Speaker 2: care for it as it grew. He said that people
[23:42] Speaker 2: had held harvest feasts as long as anyone could remember,
[23:49] Speaker 2: to celebrate when the growing and picking was done and
[23:54] Speaker 2: the food was ready to eat. Harvest beasts like the
[24:01] Speaker 2: Thanksgiving feast, he said, and Primrose and Pepper felt peaceful,
[24:11] Speaker 2: knowing they were part of something that their grandparents and
[24:16] Speaker 2: great grandparents and great great grandparents had done since forever,
[24:27] Speaker 2: that people had done in various ways and various places
[24:34] Speaker 2: all over the world, and all across the years, and
[24:43] Speaker 2: thinking about that and the old ways, and listening to
[24:49] Speaker 2: Daddy's soft, deep voice, they drifted off into sleep. They
[25:02] Speaker 2: dozed for a while in the warm, soft bed. Then
[25:09] Speaker 2: after a time, MoMA gently woke them, her soft hands
[25:17] Speaker 2: stroking their hair out of their faces as she quietly
[25:22] Speaker 2: called their names. It was time to make pie, she murmured.
[25:33] Speaker 2: Primrose stretched her arms, then arched her back. She snuggled
[25:40] Speaker 2: against the soft pillow and smooth sheets. She felt rested
[25:48] Speaker 2: and refreshed. Then the children rose from the bed and
[25:57] Speaker 2: followed their mother to the The room felt warm from
[26:05] Speaker 2: all the food cooking and its smell delicious. Daddy was
[26:14] Speaker 2: just placing the bowl of pie dough onto the table,
[26:20] Speaker 2: where squares of thin parchment paper were waiting for them,
[26:27] Speaker 2: along with rolling pins and a canister of flour. Mama
[26:35] Speaker 2: showed the children how to sprinkle a little flour onto
[26:42] Speaker 2: their parchment paper and then place a ball of dough
[26:47] Speaker 2: in the middle. She showed them how to put a
[26:53] Speaker 2: bit more flour on top, and then another piece of
[26:59] Speaker 2: parchment paper. Then they took up a rolling pin and
[27:07] Speaker 2: began to roll out their dough between two sheets of
[27:13] Speaker 2: thin paper. Primrose and Pepper followed Mama's lead. She rolled
[27:24] Speaker 2: gently from the middle of the dough burst in one direction,
[27:32] Speaker 2: then in another. Little by a little, the dough grew
[27:40] Speaker 2: flatter and wider as they shaped the ball into a
[27:47] Speaker 2: round disk that would fill a pie pan. When they
[27:55] Speaker 2: were satisfied with their pie crusts, they peeled off the
[28:01] Speaker 2: top parchment paper and set it aside. Then they carefully
[28:11] Speaker 2: picked up the bottom piece of paper with a dough
[28:16] Speaker 2: on top, and flipped it over. They each lowered their
[28:24] Speaker 2: disk of dough onto a pie pan, fitting it carefully
[28:30] Speaker 2: into the round dish. Finally, they peeled off the top parchment. Next,
[28:43] Speaker 2: each of them chose their filling and prepared their pie.
[28:51] Speaker 2: Pepper poured creamy orange pumpkin filling into his crust until
[28:59] Speaker 2: it all most reached the top. Primrose scooped fragrant apples
[29:08] Speaker 2: into hers, and Mama filled her pie crust with sweet blueberries.
[29:19] Speaker 2: Then it was time for the final touch, the topping.
[29:29] Speaker 2: Pepper left his pumpkin pie uncovered. When it was done cooking,
[29:37] Speaker 2: he would add whipped cream on top. Primrose carefully rolled
[29:46] Speaker 2: out another pie crust and placed it across the top
[29:53] Speaker 2: of her apple pie. Sinching the edges closed with her fingers.
[30:04] Speaker 2: Then she used a fork to prick a flower pattern
[30:11] Speaker 2: into the middle of the crust. This looked pretty and
[30:19] Speaker 2: it would also let steam escape from the pie as
[30:26] Speaker 2: it baked. For Mama's blueberry pie, Pepper and Primrose both
[30:35] Speaker 2: helped her to roll out another disk of dough and
[30:41] Speaker 2: then cut the dough into thin strips. They placed these
[30:49] Speaker 2: strips of dough on to the top of the pie
[30:55] Speaker 2: in a criss crossed pattern, like a lie. When the
[31:03] Speaker 2: first round of pies was ready for the oven, they
[31:09] Speaker 2: prepared another round of pies, cherry pecan and a second pumpkin.
[31:23] Speaker 2: When all the pies were ready to bake, they put
[31:28] Speaker 2: them on the counter and covered them. The pies would
[31:36] Speaker 2: go into the oven after the family ate the main meal. Then,
[31:48] Speaker 2: while the pies baked, the family would take a walk
[31:55] Speaker 2: outside in the brisk fall air to recover from their
[32:02] Speaker 2: big feast. When they returned from the walk, their pies
[32:11] Speaker 2: would be waiting for them, hot out of the oven.
[32:20] Speaker 2: Right now, they would leave the pies covered on the
[32:25] Speaker 2: counter and they would put the finishing touches on their
[32:33] Speaker 2: Thanksgiving dinner, making gravy and preparing a few more special dishes.
[32:46] Speaker 2: There was so much to look forward to. The turkey
[32:52] Speaker 2: and gravy and stuffing, the mashed potatoes and yam, the
[33:01] Speaker 2: Brussels sprouts and broccoli and olives and Waldorf salad, the
[33:12] Speaker 2: eating and chatting and laughing, the brisk walk, and of
[33:23] Speaker 2: course the delicious pie piled high with whipped cream or
[33:32] Speaker 2: vanilla ice cream. The charades and games after dessert. But
[33:43] Speaker 2: Primrose and Pepper agreed that the best part of Thanksgiving
[33:50] Speaker 2: was already here, being together, just like Daddy had said,
[34:01] Speaker 2: cooking and enjoying and just being smelling the smells and
[34:14] Speaker 2: taking their time to do a good job making good food.
[34:25] Speaker 2: It was simple and ordinary and yet special at the
[34:33] Speaker 2: same time. Lass h
