[0:29] Speaker 1: here and I'm so glad to have your company. For
[0:32] Speaker 1: today's story time, my friend Nadine is going to read
[0:37] Speaker 1: to us very soon. Her story is about a young
[0:42] Speaker 1: girl who moves to the country and makes a special
[0:47] Speaker 1: fairy friend. Moving home. Surecam bring the excitement of new opportunities,
[0:55] Speaker 1: but also some challenges of entering a new world. Whether
[1:01] Speaker 1: you've experienced that for yourself or not, I think you'll
[1:05] Speaker 1: really enjoy this story. We'll use our imaginations to help
[1:12] Speaker 1: us picture everything Nadine describes. So let's take a nice,
[1:18] Speaker 1: relaxing breath to prepare, breathing gently and fully and slowly.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Breathe back out perfect. Make sure you're comfy, and close
[1:41] Speaker 1: your eyes if you'd like. It's time to begin our story,
[1:48] Speaker 1: which starts at night as a girl named Alice settles
[1:53] Speaker 1: into bed.
[2:10] Speaker 2: Click and the light switch in Alice's bedroom as her
[2:14] Speaker 2: dad gave her a kiss on the forehead and tucked
[2:18] Speaker 2: her in for the night. I know you don't want
[2:23] Speaker 2: to leave your friends at school, honey, but there will
[2:26] Speaker 2: be new friends and adventures at our new house. Her
[2:31] Speaker 2: dad said, you promise, Alice asked with hopeful eyes. I promise.
[2:40] Speaker 2: Good night, sweetie, he replied. The Dodson family had lived
[2:49] Speaker 2: in the suburbs for years, but Patty and Mark, Alice's parents,
[2:55] Speaker 2: had both been raised on ranchers. Their dream was to
[3:02] Speaker 2: one day by their own small ranch where their kids
[3:07] Speaker 2: could have lots of space to breathe easy and roam free.
[3:17] Speaker 2: And now that dream is becoming a reality. One day
[3:27] Speaker 2: last year, the perfect opportunity came up, a beautiful twelve
[3:34] Speaker 2: acre ranch with a picturesque red barn or horse stable
[3:40] Speaker 2: with four stalls and a decent size, but muddy pond,
[3:49] Speaker 2: And so the Dodsons bought the ranch and tomorrow they'd
[3:55] Speaker 2: leave the suburbs to begin a brand new life style
[4:00] Speaker 2: in the countryside. Their son, Danny was nearly twelve years old,
[4:11] Speaker 2: and Alice was a shy and freckled eight and a
[4:14] Speaker 2: half year old. The family also included two dogs, a
[4:23] Speaker 2: black Labrador named Bear and an old German shepherd named Jeremy.
[4:34] Speaker 2: Patty and Mark had the nohow to run a small ranch,
[4:39] Speaker 2: and Danny had spent enough summers at his grandparents' farm
[4:44] Speaker 2: to know his way around animals too, so, except for Alice,
[4:51] Speaker 2: they were all familiar with cattle, horses, chickens, and even sheep. Sheep,
[5:02] Speaker 2: in fact, were Patty's animal of expertise. One time, she
[5:11] Speaker 2: asked Alice what she thought about living on a ranch
[5:14] Speaker 2: with sheep, so Alice started counting sheep one sheep, two sheep,
[5:24] Speaker 2: three sheep, and then slowly pretended to doze off. That
[5:31] Speaker 2: got a good laugh out of Mum. The family agreed
[5:38] Speaker 2: that kids should pick the name for the ranch, but
[5:42] Speaker 2: Danny wanted to name it after himself and Alice did too,
[5:50] Speaker 2: so they ended up putting the two names together and
[5:55] Speaker 2: calling it the Dallas Ranch. They had the name cast
[6:02] Speaker 2: in wrought iron to put over the driveway gate. The
[6:10] Speaker 2: movers arrived early the next morning. After a couple of hours,
[6:18] Speaker 2: everything was packed up and ready to go, so the
[6:23] Speaker 2: family opted in their car and headed to their new home,
[6:28] Speaker 2: with the movers following behind them. Alice stared longingly at
[6:35] Speaker 2: the window as they drove. Their old home was all
[6:41] Speaker 2: she ever knew, and she had no idea what to
[6:45] Speaker 2: expect moving to a different place. She watched as the
[6:53] Speaker 2: neatly organized suburban neighborhoods slowly became more spacious. Eventually, the
[7:04] Speaker 2: neighborhoods disappeared altogether, giving way to rolling green hills intermixed
[7:11] Speaker 2: with patches of forest and pastures with cows and horses.
[7:20] Speaker 2: Before long, the wrought iron gate bearing the name Dallas
[7:26] Speaker 2: Ranch appeared. It was the first time the kids had
[7:31] Speaker 2: seen the ranch with their chosen name posted out front.
[7:38] Speaker 2: That's pretty cool, Danny, remarked. Mark and Patty nodded in
[7:45] Speaker 2: approval and gave each other a wink. Mark helped the
[7:53] Speaker 2: movers while Patty took the kids around the ranch to
[7:58] Speaker 2: show them some new additions since their last visit. Bear
[8:03] Speaker 2: and Jeremy, the two dogs, came along for the fun.
[8:10] Speaker 2: Mark had purchased a few head of cattle plus two horses,
[8:17] Speaker 2: Bobby Socks and Cakewalk. Bobby Socks was a young gelding,
[8:24] Speaker 2: his blue eyes and a tevero coloration which caused his
[8:29] Speaker 2: coat to be spotted black and white. Cakewalk was a
[8:36] Speaker 2: solid brown and had a calm, easy nature. Alice had
[8:43] Speaker 2: seen horses at her grandparents before, so she knew to
[8:48] Speaker 2: approach them calmly from the front. Bear and Jeremy kept
[8:55] Speaker 2: their distance. They were intrigued, though, still trying to figure
[9:01] Speaker 2: out who all these new animals were. These two horses
[9:09] Speaker 2: were gentle giants. When they saw Alice approaching, they trotted
[9:16] Speaker 2: right over and nuzzled their long faces into her hands.
[9:23] Speaker 2: Alice walked over to the barn where hay bales were
[9:26] Speaker 2: stacked along the wall. She grabbed two handfuls and turned
[9:32] Speaker 2: around to find the two horses standing right behind her.
[9:38] Speaker 2: They had followed her to the hay bales, hoping she'd
[9:42] Speaker 2: feed them. Alice let out a giggle and opened up
[9:47] Speaker 2: her hands. The horses promptly gobbled up the hay and
[9:53] Speaker 2: nuzzled Alice, hoping for more. Patty had picked up few
[9:59] Speaker 2: sh sheep, a rooster, and five hens. They headed over
[10:07] Speaker 2: to the chicken coop, with Bear and Jeremy jogging alongside.
[10:14] Speaker 2: Patty introduced Alice and Danny to the sheep on the way.
[10:21] Speaker 2: Alice laughed at the way there fur that like bouncy pillows.
[10:28] Speaker 2: One sheep didn't take a liking to Bear and let
[10:32] Speaker 2: out a bear right at him. Bear gave the sheep
[10:37] Speaker 2: an inquisitive look and kept jogging along. The sheep wasn't
[10:42] Speaker 2: worth his time anyways. Just on the other side of
[10:49] Speaker 2: the sheep pasture was the chicken coop, the brown hut
[10:54] Speaker 2: with wire fencing around it and plenty of room to
[10:58] Speaker 2: roam in between. The chickens only seemed to notice Bear
[11:04] Speaker 2: and Jeremy, who were lingering at the edge of the fence.
[11:10] Speaker 2: The two dogs circled the coop, trying to find a
[11:14] Speaker 2: way in. Like a game of cat and mouse, The
[11:19] Speaker 2: chickens would move around the pen, always staying on the
[11:23] Speaker 2: opposite side of the two dogs. Danny brought Alice inside
[11:30] Speaker 2: the hut and showed her how to gather the eggs
[11:34] Speaker 2: from the nesting boxes. Just then, an old red truck
[11:42] Speaker 2: pulled into their gravel driveway. I have a surprise for you,
[11:49] Speaker 2: said Patty. Alice and Danny's eyes lit up, and they
[11:55] Speaker 2: hastily headed back towards the house where the red truck
[11:59] Speaker 2: just parked. By the time they arrived, Mark was already
[12:08] Speaker 2: outside chatting with the driver, who had pulled out a
[12:12] Speaker 2: big cardboard box. Alice and Danny sped no moment or
[12:21] Speaker 2: pleasantries because they already recognized the noises they were hearing
[12:27] Speaker 2: a litter of puppies. They were a couple of months old,
[12:35] Speaker 2: just big enough to wander around on their own, but
[12:38] Speaker 2: still young enough to be cute and innocent. You can
[12:45] Speaker 2: pick whichever one you'd like, said the driver with a smile.
[12:51] Speaker 2: That was all Alice needed, because one little beagle had
[12:56] Speaker 2: already caught her eye and was hypnotizing her with cuteness.
[13:03] Speaker 2: She picked it up and Danny petted it while the
[13:06] Speaker 2: puppy rested its head on Alice's shoulder. The driver came over,
[13:15] Speaker 2: held his hands out for the puppy and placed it
[13:18] Speaker 2: on the ground. Watch this, he said. He pulled a
[13:25] Speaker 2: treat out of his pocket and placed it on the
[13:29] Speaker 2: puppy's nose. The puppy stood completely still until the driver
[13:37] Speaker 2: clapped his hands. Right away, the puppy flicked its nose,
[13:44] Speaker 2: launching the treat into the air and caught it on
[13:49] Speaker 2: the way back down. Everyone was amazed at how smart
[13:56] Speaker 2: this puppy was, and at such a young age. We
[14:02] Speaker 2: have to call it tricks, said Danny with a grin.
[14:08] Speaker 2: Alice nodded in approval. Just then, Bear and Jeremy returned
[14:15] Speaker 2: from their excursion around the ranch. Alice knelt down to
[14:20] Speaker 2: explain the situation to them. She didn't want them getting jealous.
[14:27] Speaker 2: Bear stood looking down at the little stranger. His tongue
[14:32] Speaker 2: hung out as he cocked his head and looked at Danny,
[14:36] Speaker 2: who patted him and told him everything was all right.
[14:42] Speaker 2: Jeremy took one look at the beagle and wandered off.
[14:47] Speaker 2: Clearly he was not too enthusiastic, or he was keeping
[14:51] Speaker 2: a good poker face about it. They decided to introduce
[15:00] Speaker 2: Tricks to the other animals. After lunch, Mark washed up
[15:06] Speaker 2: and helped Patty make sandwiches. Meanwhile, it didn't take long
[15:13] Speaker 2: for Tricks to make herself at home, sniffing around the kitchen,
[15:19] Speaker 2: crawling up onto the living room sofa, she eyeboard the staircase,
[15:26] Speaker 2: but wasn't quite big enough to climb it, so she
[15:30] Speaker 2: wandered back to the kitchen, where Patty set out some
[15:34] Speaker 2: food and water for her. As the family ate lunch,
[15:42] Speaker 2: they talked about Alice's responsibilities for her new pet. Tricks
[15:49] Speaker 2: was already house trained, so that was a relief that
[15:54] Speaker 2: Alice would be in charge of ensuring the puppy was
[15:58] Speaker 2: well fed and plated with She'd also help with bathing Tricks,
[16:05] Speaker 2: because any dog on a ranch needs regular baths. After lunch,
[16:16] Speaker 2: Patty and Alice took Tricks on a big tour of
[16:20] Speaker 2: the ranch to check out the cows, horses, sheep, and
[16:26] Speaker 2: chickens and to get to know Bear and Jeremy a
[16:30] Speaker 2: bit better. And, as Alice reminded her mother, they still
[16:36] Speaker 2: needed to visit the pond. Bear was off doing his
[16:43] Speaker 2: own running around, but Jeremy was close by, so Patty
[16:49] Speaker 2: called him to tag along. His expression didn't suggest he
[16:54] Speaker 2: was in the mood, but he came over, giving Tricks
[16:59] Speaker 2: a good sniff. He bobbed his head as if granting
[17:04] Speaker 2: his approval. Then they all headed towards the cow pasture.
[17:16] Speaker 2: A few cows were grazing close to the fence and
[17:20] Speaker 2: slowly looked up when they saw the group approaching. The
[17:25] Speaker 2: closest cow was dark brown. Its calm, passive face showed
[17:32] Speaker 2: no distraction as it continued chewing while watching them, But
[17:38] Speaker 2: when Tricks decided to run under the fence, the cows
[17:42] Speaker 2: decided it was time to move along. Patty called the
[17:48] Speaker 2: dog to come back. Luckily, Tricks was smart and must
[17:54] Speaker 2: have picked up on her name, so she complied. Jeremy meanwhile,
[18:01] Speaker 2: seemed to shake his head in embarrassment. They took their
[18:08] Speaker 2: time walking over to the horse corarel, where Bobby's socks
[18:13] Speaker 2: and Cakewalk were roaming under the fading sun. Alice kept
[18:21] Speaker 2: Tricks in her arms to avoid her running towards the horses,
[18:28] Speaker 2: but when Cakewalk saw people coming, he sauntered over in
[18:32] Speaker 2: case anyone wanted to pet him. Tricks began to whimper,
[18:38] Speaker 2: pushing her paws into Alice's arms and causing her to
[18:43] Speaker 2: set the puppy down. Instead of running towards the horses,
[18:49] Speaker 2: Tricks took off in the opposite direction. Jeremy glanced at Patty,
[18:56] Speaker 2: then trotted off after the puppy, easily catching up to
[19:01] Speaker 2: her and somehow calming her down. So much for the horses,
[19:09] Speaker 2: thought Alice, But Patty assured her little girl that tricks
[19:13] Speaker 2: would get used to them in time. Meanwhile, the sky
[19:21] Speaker 2: had darkened with clouds rain might fall any minute now.
[19:29] Speaker 2: The sheep were up next, and when Patty mentioned them,
[19:34] Speaker 2: Alice pretended to nod off and snore, causing Tricks to
[19:38] Speaker 2: start licking her face. Ironically, the sheep were resting, all
[19:48] Speaker 2: except a little lamb, which stood off in the corner.
[19:55] Speaker 2: Alice had named the lamb Cotton on their excursion around
[19:58] Speaker 2: the ranch earlier that day. She tried to call Cotton over,
[20:05] Speaker 2: but sheep aren't very responsive to such things. They'd have
[20:10] Speaker 2: to walk around to it, but as they got closer,
[20:15] Speaker 2: the wooly little lamb moved to the other side of
[20:18] Speaker 2: the pen. Alice sighed she wanted to introduce tricks and Cotton,
[20:26] Speaker 2: but little Cotton was having none of it, so Jeremy intervened,
[20:32] Speaker 2: running over to where Cotton stood, making her cross back
[20:37] Speaker 2: towards Alice so she could make the proper introductions. As
[20:45] Speaker 2: Patty took out her phone to snap a few pictures,
[20:49] Speaker 2: the first drops of rain hit the screen. She asked
[20:54] Speaker 2: if Alice was ready to go back to the house.
[20:58] Speaker 2: The chickens could wait till tomorrow, and Patty was hoping
[21:02] Speaker 2: her daughter would forget about the pond, but she didn't
[21:08] Speaker 2: forget The pond was close to the house, though, so
[21:13] Speaker 2: they made their way there as the first drops began falling.
[21:21] Speaker 2: By the time they got to the pond, the little
[21:24] Speaker 2: beagle looked exhausted, but she found enough energy to run
[21:30] Speaker 2: straight into the mud surrounding the pond before lying down
[21:36] Speaker 2: flat on her stomach. Alice waded in to the rescue.
[21:45] Speaker 2: When Tricks saw her, she rolled right over on her
[21:49] Speaker 2: back and wagged her tail, letting the raindrops splash on
[21:54] Speaker 2: her muddy tummy. Patty couldn't help but laugh. She told
[22:02] Speaker 2: Alice to just grab the puppy and carry her home,
[22:08] Speaker 2: so Alice picked her up in one hand to avoid
[22:11] Speaker 2: getting mud on her dress. Thankfully, Tricks was exhausted and
[22:19] Speaker 2: didn't try to fight the free ride home. When they
[22:27] Speaker 2: reached the house, they washed Tricks off outside with the hose.
[22:34] Speaker 2: The last bits of mud dripped away. As the slow
[22:38] Speaker 2: drizzling rain started to pick up. Danny brought out a towel,
[22:45] Speaker 2: wrapped the puppy in it, and carried her inside. Now
[22:53] Speaker 2: all cleaned up, Tricks gulped down some water and gave
[22:57] Speaker 2: in to her exhaustion, dozing off on the covered front
[23:01] Speaker 2: porch with Jeremy and Bear resting nearby. After their first
[23:11] Speaker 2: dinner in the new house, Alice was reading a book
[23:15] Speaker 2: in bed when her dad walked in, carrying the sleeping
[23:19] Speaker 2: Tricks in his arms. Alice thanked him for the new puppy.
[23:27] Speaker 2: It was everything she could hope for. Her Dad smiled
[23:34] Speaker 2: and laid Tricks down on the bed. He gave Alice
[23:40] Speaker 2: a kiss on the forehead as always, and turned the
[23:44] Speaker 2: light out. Tricks snuggled close into Alice's chest. She could
[23:56] Speaker 2: feel the puppy's tiny heartbeat. She closed her eyes, grateful
[24:07] Speaker 2: for a new home and her new best friend.
