[0:28] Speaker 1: is Tom, and I'm so glad you're here for story time.
[0:33] Speaker 1: Whether it's for a nap, for bed, or just for fun.
[0:37] Speaker 1: Story time is my favorite part of the day, especially
[0:41] Speaker 1: when friends like you are here to join me. Speaking
[0:46] Speaker 1: of friends, Heather is back to read to us. I
[0:51] Speaker 1: can't wait to listen along, just like all of you.
[0:55] Speaker 1: Her story is all about a boy named Oliver and
[0:59] Speaker 1: what he did when he went to the beach. Have
[1:04] Speaker 1: you ever been to the beach before? Whether you have
[1:08] Speaker 1: or not, I bet you'll be eager for a visit
[1:11] Speaker 1: to the seaside after you hear this lovely story. So
[1:17] Speaker 1: let's get ready to listen. Close your eyes and enjoy
[1:25] Speaker 1: a nice slow breath in through your nose, then gently
[1:34] Speaker 1: breathe back out. Well done, Now we're settled in. Begin
[1:45] Speaker 1: to imagine a wide sandy beach. Picture a bright, warm
[1:53] Speaker 1: sun and a big blue sky. Imagine that you can
[1:59] Speaker 1: hear water splashing gently. Maybe you can hear a bird cooling.
[2:10] Speaker 1: Wiggle your toes in the crumbly sand with this lovely
[2:18] Speaker 1: scene in your imagination. Let's begin our story.
[2:37] Speaker 2: Once there was a little boy named Oliver. He loved
[2:44] Speaker 2: to do all the things that most kids loved to do.
[2:51] Speaker 2: He probably loved to do some of your favorite things too.
[2:57] Speaker 2: He loved to play indoor, and he loved to play
[3:02] Speaker 2: out of doors. He loved to play in the backyard,
[3:09] Speaker 2: and he loved to play at the park. But maybe
[3:15] Speaker 2: most of all, he loved to play at the beach.
[3:23] Speaker 2: As long as he could remember, he had loved the
[3:28] Speaker 2: beach with its warm, soft sand and cool wet water.
[3:37] Speaker 2: He loved to squish the dry sand with his toes
[3:43] Speaker 2: and squash the wet sand with his toes and dig
[3:48] Speaker 2: big holes in it. He loved to jump and splash
[3:55] Speaker 2: in the water. He loved to run close to the
[4:01] Speaker 2: waves and then run away, laughing when they came in.
[4:08] Speaker 2: And he loved to look for crabs among the rocks
[4:13] Speaker 2: and make canals in the sand that filled with water
[4:18] Speaker 2: when the waves came. And so he was over George
[4:24] Speaker 2: one morning when his grandmother said, let's put on your swimsuit, Allie.
[4:31] Speaker 2: Today we're going to the beach. He couldn't get changed
[4:38] Speaker 2: fast enough. His swimsuit was green with sailboats printed all
[4:46] Speaker 2: over it. He loved that swimsuit because it meant laying
[4:53] Speaker 2: in the water and the sand and getting just as
[4:58] Speaker 2: messy as he light. When he was dressed in his
[5:05] Speaker 2: sailboat covered swimsuit and matching swim shirt, Grandma gave him
[5:13] Speaker 2: a bag of santoys to carry. You're my strong helper,
[5:21] Speaker 2: she told him, and Oliver smiled. He was strong and
[5:28] Speaker 2: he was a helper and Grandma could count on him.
[5:35] Speaker 2: Then she picked up a backpack with their lunch and
[5:39] Speaker 2: they headed to the car together. It wasn't a long
[5:46] Speaker 2: drive to the beach, and Oliver looked out the window.
[5:51] Speaker 2: As they drove. He watched the other cars and saw
[5:58] Speaker 2: a yellow bus and a big truck go by. And
[6:05] Speaker 2: soon they arrived at the beach. Grandma parked the car
[6:12] Speaker 2: and helped Oliver out of his car seat. He picked
[6:18] Speaker 2: up the bag of sand toys, and Grandma took the
[6:23] Speaker 2: backpack and they walked a little ways to the beach.
[6:31] Speaker 2: When they arrived, Oliver took off his sandals and walked
[6:37] Speaker 2: out unto the sand. It was warm, and it sank
[6:45] Speaker 2: beneath his feet when he stepped on it. He wiggled
[6:50] Speaker 2: his toes and felt the sand wiggle around them. The
[6:57] Speaker 2: sun was shining and it made the water look sparkily,
[7:03] Speaker 2: like it was covered with fairy dust. Oliver ran as
[7:10] Speaker 2: fast as he could across the beach and then took
[7:16] Speaker 2: a flying leap. He landed on his feet, then slid
[7:23] Speaker 2: across the sand like a baseball player sliding into first base.
[7:32] Speaker 2: He stood up, ran and slid again. This time he
[7:39] Speaker 2: stayed down. After he slid. There was a pile of
[7:45] Speaker 2: seaweed nearby that he wanted to examine. The seaweed was
[7:54] Speaker 2: dark green and shiny from wetness. He picked up up
[8:01] Speaker 2: and felt how smooth and cool it was. The pile
[8:08] Speaker 2: of seaweed was large, and Oliver began to wonder just
[8:16] Speaker 2: how much there was in the pile. He decided to
[8:22] Speaker 2: lay it all out in a line and see how
[8:26] Speaker 2: far it stretched. So he picked up an armful of
[8:32] Speaker 2: seaweed and began laying it out as straight as he could.
[8:40] Speaker 2: He laid out piece after peace of the green seaweed,
[8:47] Speaker 2: and the line stretched farther and farther across the beach.
[8:55] Speaker 2: Grandma came to see what he was doing, and she
[8:59] Speaker 2: was amazed at how long his line of seaweed was.
[9:07] Speaker 2: It looked like a long, long road, and Oliver began
[9:13] Speaker 2: to imagine that he was building a road for crabs.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Maybe the crabs would go on a long trip by
[9:25] Speaker 2: following this road and have lots of adventures. Maybe they
[9:33] Speaker 2: would need somewhere to rest along the way, he thought, so,
[9:41] Speaker 2: Oliver decided to make a motel for the crabs to
[9:46] Speaker 2: rest in. It would be next to the seaweed road,
[9:51] Speaker 2: between the road and the lapping waves. He sat down
[9:58] Speaker 2: and began to dig, making a pile of damp sand
[10:04] Speaker 2: to build with. He smoothed out a space in the
[10:09] Speaker 2: sand along the seaweed road. He shaped the damp sand,
[10:18] Speaker 2: trying to make it into a square building, but pat
[10:23] Speaker 2: and pat as he would, it still didn't look quite right.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Then Oliver remembered the bag of sand toys he'd carried
[10:38] Speaker 2: for Grandma. He ran to get it, and sure enough,
[10:45] Speaker 2: there was a sand mold that was just the right
[10:49] Speaker 2: shape for his motel. He scooped sand into the mold
[10:55] Speaker 2: with his hands, pushing and patting it until it filled
[11:02] Speaker 2: the plastic shape. Then he turned over the mold onto
[11:09] Speaker 2: the smooth patch of beach he'd prepared, and he thumped
[11:15] Speaker 2: it a few times to make sure all the sand
[11:20] Speaker 2: came out. When he lifted the mold, a little square
[11:26] Speaker 2: of sand was left neatly shaped like a building. Oliver
[11:35] Speaker 2: looked at it for a moment, proud of how well
[11:39] Speaker 2: it had turned out. Then he found a stick nearby
[11:45] Speaker 2: and poked holes into the square to make a door
[11:50] Speaker 2: and two windows. He looked around and found some pebbles,
[11:57] Speaker 2: which he arranged to form a path from the seaweed
[12:02] Speaker 2: road to the door of the sand model. Oliver looked
[12:08] Speaker 2: at his creation for a while and decided it still
[12:13] Speaker 2: needed something a sign. He stood up and stretched a bit.
[12:22] Speaker 2: Then he wandered off in search of something to make
[12:27] Speaker 2: a sign. A little way along the beach, he spotted
[12:34] Speaker 2: a small piece of driftwood perfect. He picked it up,
[12:42] Speaker 2: and he used a stick to scratch some marks on
[12:46] Speaker 2: the driftwood, like writing. He imagined what it would say,
[12:53] Speaker 2: the sand motel. Then he walked back and the sign
[13:01] Speaker 2: against the outside of the sand building. That way travelers
[13:08] Speaker 2: would know what it was. He surveyed the scene again
[13:15] Speaker 2: and was pleased with what he saw. Satisfied, he decided
[13:23] Speaker 2: to do something else. Now he was covered in sand
[13:28] Speaker 2: from all his building, so he thought he'd like to
[13:34] Speaker 2: jump in the water to rinse off. Now Oliver knew
[13:41] Speaker 2: all about the water and being safe, and he knew
[13:46] Speaker 2: he needed to ask a grown up before he went
[13:51] Speaker 2: anywhere near it, So he went to Grandma, who was
[13:57] Speaker 2: sitting on a towel nearby. He explained what he wanted
[14:04] Speaker 2: to do, and Grandma said he could go in up
[14:09] Speaker 2: to his waist. The water was smooth and calm, with
[14:17] Speaker 2: little waves that lapped at the beach with a soft
[14:23] Speaker 2: whispering sound. Oliver looked out across the sun's sparkled water
[14:32] Speaker 2: and took a deep breath. Then he ran towards the
[14:38] Speaker 2: waves and jumped in. Splash went the water. He felt
[14:48] Speaker 2: the cool wetness on his feet and legs, and droplets
[14:54] Speaker 2: sprang over his arms. Splash, splash, splash. He walked in
[15:05] Speaker 2: until the water swirled around his belly button. Here he
[15:12] Speaker 2: stopped and wallowed in the water, like a little hippo
[15:19] Speaker 2: in a pond. He splashed and turned, imagining he was
[15:28] Speaker 2: a baby hippo playing in the warm water. A little
[15:35] Speaker 2: bit of it splashed into his mouth and he tasted
[15:40] Speaker 2: its salty flavor. The smell was salty, too, and he
[15:47] Speaker 2: liked it very much. It was the smell of the beach,
[15:54] Speaker 2: and Oliver loved the beach. He breathed in the salty
[16:03] Speaker 2: sea smell and jumped again. He felt the droplets spray
[16:11] Speaker 2: around him and watched them fly through the air, catching
[16:17] Speaker 2: the sun like tiny diamonds. When at last he was
[16:24] Speaker 2: done splashing and playing, he walked back onto the dry beach.
[16:34] Speaker 2: Water streamed off his body, and again he felt like
[16:41] Speaker 2: a little hippo climbing out of a bond. Grandma brought
[16:48] Speaker 2: him a dry towel. She wrapped it around him and
[16:53] Speaker 2: it felt soft and fluffy and warm. When he was
[17:00] Speaker 2: all wrapped up as cozy as could be, Oliver sat
[17:07] Speaker 2: down next to Grandma to have some lunch. She pulled
[17:14] Speaker 2: a lunch box out of her bag and had had
[17:18] Speaker 2: some of Oliver's favorite things to eat inside. After lunch,
[17:28] Speaker 2: he would dig a big, big hole, he thought, as
[17:34] Speaker 2: he munched and climb on the rocks and splash in
[17:41] Speaker 2: the waves again. But maybe first he would lie down
[17:48] Speaker 2: on his soft, fluffy towel and let the sun warm him.
[17:57] Speaker 2: He might even close his eyes just for a moment
[18:03] Speaker 2: and let the sunshine make him warm all the way
[18:09] Speaker 2: inside himself. He would feel the sun over him, and
[18:17] Speaker 2: feel the sand beneath him. He would listen to the
[18:23] Speaker 2: waves whispering over the sandy shore, and he'd listen to
[18:31] Speaker 2: the birds calling far out over the water. He would
[18:39] Speaker 2: breathe quietly and just listen to hear what else he
[18:45] Speaker 2: could hear, and feel what else he could feel, and
[18:53] Speaker 2: think his quiet beach thoughts. Yes, it was true, Oliver
[19:04] Speaker 2: loved the beach. U
