[0:27] Speaker 1: much for joining me again. I'm Tom and I'm so
[0:31] Speaker 1: happy you're here. For my favorite part of the day,
[0:35] Speaker 1: story time, my friend TK is back to read to us.
[0:41] Speaker 1: He'll be telling us about a boy named Billy who
[0:45] Speaker 1: goes camping with his mother by a big mountain. Getting
[0:51] Speaker 1: out in nature can be so healthy and so much fun.
[0:57] Speaker 1: Perhaps tonight's story will inspire you to want to go
[1:00] Speaker 1: camping or to have a day out in the woods.
[1:05] Speaker 1: There's so much to see here, smell, touch, and to
[1:12] Speaker 1: learn when you're surrounded by nature. So let's get ready
[1:19] Speaker 1: to imagine this story by taking a soothing breath together
[1:26] Speaker 1: inhale slowly and exhale. That's made me feel nice and relaxed.
[1:40] Speaker 1: Ready to listen. I hope you are too. Now with
[1:47] Speaker 1: your eyes closed, imagine a steaming mug of hot chocolate.
[1:55] Speaker 1: It's dark brown with big puffy Marsha shmallows floating on top.
[2:04] Speaker 1: The marshmallows are almost like pillows. That's how soft they are.
[2:12] Speaker 1: This is what Billy is thinking about too, as he
[2:16] Speaker 1: sits with his mother by their yellow tent in the woods.
[2:38] Speaker 2: From their campsite. Billy and his mother stared up at
[2:44] Speaker 2: the most beautiful mountain they'd ever seen. It was tall
[2:51] Speaker 2: and strong. There was snow at the very top that
[2:58] Speaker 2: looked to Billy like vanilla ice cream. He wished he
[3:04] Speaker 2: could taste it. The sun was about to set and
[3:11] Speaker 2: the air already felt cool on Billy's skin. Soon he
[3:19] Speaker 2: would crawl into their bright yellow tent and snuggle up
[3:25] Speaker 2: in his sleeping bag or a very deep sleep. But first,
[3:34] Speaker 2: Billy and his mother had to make hot chocolate. This
[3:41] Speaker 2: was a very important tradition in their family, and it
[3:47] Speaker 2: made him smile to think about it. Billy enjoyed watching
[3:54] Speaker 2: his mother stir the chocolate into the hot water, and
[4:00] Speaker 2: he liked it even more when they had marshmallows to
[4:04] Speaker 2: put on top. When they were camping together, it was
[4:12] Speaker 2: Billy's job to go down to the lake and fill
[4:16] Speaker 2: their cooking pot with water to make the drinks. The
[4:22] Speaker 2: pot was round and silver and slightly dented from many
[4:29] Speaker 2: good camping trips. He picked it up and off he went.
[4:37] Speaker 2: As he walked down toward the lake, Billy's legs felt
[4:43] Speaker 2: tired yet strong. He knew this was because of the
[4:50] Speaker 2: long hike they made to their campsite today. It was
[4:57] Speaker 2: an interesting feeling to be tired, but also to know
[5:03] Speaker 2: that he could go further if he had to. When
[5:09] Speaker 2: he got to the edge of the lake, Billy heard
[5:13] Speaker 2: the calls of birds flying to their nests and the
[5:19] Speaker 2: scurrying of squirrels climbing up their trees. They gathered food
[5:27] Speaker 2: and water for the evening, just as he was doing too.
[5:35] Speaker 2: As he walked closer to the water, everything grew quiet.
[5:44] Speaker 2: The mountain top towered over the far side of the lake.
[5:51] Speaker 2: When Billy looked at the surface of the water, he
[5:56] Speaker 2: saw the reflection of the mountain in it. It made
[6:01] Speaker 2: the mountain look like it was upside down, as if
[6:07] Speaker 2: the vanilla ice cream snow was almost touching his boots.
[6:15] Speaker 2: Billy didn't want to disturb the beautiful image of a mountain,
[6:21] Speaker 2: so he bent down and dipped his pot into the water.
[6:26] Speaker 2: Very carefully. As water slid into his pot, Billy remembered
[6:36] Speaker 2: his mother saying that by being gentle and caring, we
[6:42] Speaker 2: can be one with nature. He'd never totally understood what
[6:49] Speaker 2: it meant to be one with nature, but now he
[6:56] Speaker 2: started to feel it. Billy imagined himself as that mountain.
[7:04] Speaker 2: What would his life be like, he wondered. The mountain
[7:09] Speaker 2: was big and strong, but also slow and patient. As
[7:18] Speaker 2: he let his imagination room, he began to breathe like
[7:24] Speaker 2: the mountain. He took a giant breath in, held it
[7:33] Speaker 2: for just a moment, and then let out a big,
[7:40] Speaker 2: long Sidhe maybe that was how a mountainside, too, he thought.
[7:55] Speaker 2: Just then, Billy saw a rainbow trout in the lake.
[8:02] Speaker 2: It poked its round silver head through the water, which
[8:07] Speaker 2: disturbed the reflection of the mountain in the lake. Circles
[8:13] Speaker 2: of water rippled out from where it had appeared. Surprised,
[8:21] Speaker 2: Billy let go of the pot with a splash. It
[8:27] Speaker 2: bounced into the water and started to float away like
[8:33] Speaker 2: a little metal boat, and the rainbow trout darted off
[8:40] Speaker 2: below the surface. At first, Billy didn't know what to do,
[8:50] Speaker 2: so he looked all around him to see if there
[8:55] Speaker 2: was anything he could use to get the pot back.
[9:01] Speaker 2: There were rocks and a twisted tree covered in moss.
[9:08] Speaker 2: Soon as the water grew still, the reflection of the
[9:14] Speaker 2: mountain reappeared in the lake. Billy took another big breath
[9:22] Speaker 2: in like the mountain. He held it for just a moment,
[9:30] Speaker 2: and then as he was letting out his long sigh,
[9:37] Speaker 2: a soft wind whistled into Billy's ear. It was as
[9:44] Speaker 2: if the mountain itself were speaking to him. It's okay, Billy,
[9:53] Speaker 2: the voice and the wind said, look under the tree.
[10:00] Speaker 2: Billy listened to the mountain's words. He walked to the
[10:06] Speaker 2: twisted tree, whose long strands of moss created a protected
[10:13] Speaker 2: space beneath them. Pulling back the moss, Billy discovered a
[10:21] Speaker 2: row boat with a bright green seat. It would be
[10:27] Speaker 2: perfect for rescuing his pot. Billy was tired from the
[10:34] Speaker 2: long day. At first, he didn't know if he had
[10:40] Speaker 2: the energy to drag the row boat down the rocks
[10:45] Speaker 2: and into the water, But as he watched the pot'spin
[10:51] Speaker 2: in lazy circles in the lake, he knew what he
[10:56] Speaker 2: had to do if he wanted that mug of hot
[11:01] Speaker 2: chocolate tonight. Billy pulled the rowboat down to the lake
[11:10] Speaker 2: and slid himself onto the green seat. He found two
[11:17] Speaker 2: wooden oars and plucked them into the water. And he
[11:25] Speaker 2: started to row. He rowed and rowed as hard as
[11:32] Speaker 2: he could. He noticed insects bouncing along the surface of
[11:39] Speaker 2: the water. Beautiful fish swam happily beneath them. He wondered
[11:48] Speaker 2: which one was the fish that had surprised him in
[11:52] Speaker 2: the first place. He was curious, but he wasn't upset
[11:59] Speaker 2: with the fish, even though it meant he had to
[12:03] Speaker 2: wait a little longer for his hot chocolate and bedtime.
[12:09] Speaker 2: His mother had taught him to appreciate all living things.
[12:16] Speaker 2: Billy was grateful that the fish had given him his
[12:21] Speaker 2: chance or an adventure, so he whispered thank you down
[12:28] Speaker 2: into the lake, hoping the fish would hear it. Billy
[12:36] Speaker 2: rowed and rowed. He saw that he was getting closer
[12:42] Speaker 2: to the pot, which had floated to the very center
[12:46] Speaker 2: of the lake. When the boat was right next to it,
[12:53] Speaker 2: Billy pulled his oars out of the water. They made
[12:59] Speaker 2: a trip sound as water from the lake ran off
[13:04] Speaker 2: their ends. Carefully, he stretched his arm out as far
[13:12] Speaker 2: as it would go over the side of the boat.
[13:18] Speaker 2: His fingertips touched the cold water, and he felt a
[13:24] Speaker 2: small chill run up his arm. Billy thought of their
[13:31] Speaker 2: warm yellow tent He thought of his sleeping bag, which
[13:38] Speaker 2: was nice and cozy. He thought of the pillow that
[13:45] Speaker 2: fit perfectly behind his neck. How nice it would be
[13:51] Speaker 2: to snuggle up tonight. He stretched a little further and
[13:59] Speaker 2: felt the metal side of the pot against his palm.
[14:05] Speaker 2: Billy lifted it out of the lake. It was filled
[14:10] Speaker 2: with water, but but wasn't too heavy. At the very
[14:17] Speaker 2: moment he brought the pot into his lap, he saw
[14:21] Speaker 2: the mountain reflecting in the water inside it. The mountain
[14:28] Speaker 2: had rocky slopes covered with trees at the top with
[14:35] Speaker 2: the bright white fields of ice cream colored snow. It
[14:42] Speaker 2: felt like a special moment between him and the mountain,
[14:48] Speaker 2: and Billy wished it could last forever. But if he
[14:56] Speaker 2: stayed there in this rowboat in the middle of the lake,
[15:01] Speaker 2: holding his pot of water with the picture of the
[15:05] Speaker 2: mountain in it, he would never be able to enjoy
[15:10] Speaker 2: the hot chocolate. So Billy set the pot down on
[15:16] Speaker 2: the empty seat beside him. He didn't want a single
[15:22] Speaker 2: drop of the water to spill. They needed all of
[15:27] Speaker 2: it for the hot chocolate. He rode very slowly back
[15:36] Speaker 2: to shore. Every stroke was long and careful, and once
[15:44] Speaker 2: again Billy felt like the mountain. Because the mountain was
[15:52] Speaker 2: never in a hurry. It took its time and watched
[15:58] Speaker 2: the seasons pass surround it, and the sun rise and fall.
[16:07] Speaker 2: That reminded Billy to look up toward the sky. It
[16:13] Speaker 2: was filled with pretty oranges and pinks and yellows, like
[16:20] Speaker 2: a giant quilt with all of his favorite colors. Finally,
[16:29] Speaker 2: he felt the rowboat reach the shore, the sand and
[16:35] Speaker 2: gravel crunched beneath its metal bottom. He pulled the oars in,
[16:43] Speaker 2: watching them drip just like they had before. He picked
[16:50] Speaker 2: up the pot of water and set it gently on
[16:55] Speaker 2: a nearby rock. Then he dragged the rowboat back to
[17:03] Speaker 2: the exact same spot beneath the twisted tree. His mother
[17:11] Speaker 2: had taught him to put things back where he found them.
[17:18] Speaker 2: Since the rowboat didn't belong to him, he thought it
[17:23] Speaker 2: was especially important to make sure it was safe now.
[17:29] Speaker 2: After all, there might be children just like him who'd
[17:35] Speaker 2: need to borrow the rowboat some day. Billie took his
[17:42] Speaker 2: time returning to camp. He said good night to the
[17:48] Speaker 2: rowboat and to the tree with its long ropes of moss.
[17:55] Speaker 2: He said good night to the lake and to the
[17:59] Speaker 2: rainbow trout who had surprised him, but he waited to
[18:06] Speaker 2: say good night to the mountain because it continued to
[18:10] Speaker 2: watch over him as he walked all the way back
[18:15] Speaker 2: to the tent where his mother was waiting. She waved
[18:21] Speaker 2: to him and smiled when he arrived with a match.
[18:28] Speaker 2: She lit the flame of their camp stove. Billy watched
[18:34] Speaker 2: it dance below the pot. As the water heated, Billy
[18:41] Speaker 2: saw the mountain reflected in the pot once again. He
[18:48] Speaker 2: told his mother all about his adventures with the pot
[18:53] Speaker 2: and the boat, and how he heard the whispering voice
[18:58] Speaker 2: of the mountain. His mother smiled as she listened to
[19:04] Speaker 2: his story. The water bubbled and gurgled as it started
[19:12] Speaker 2: to boil. His mother turned off the flame and waited
[19:19] Speaker 2: until the water was once again as still as the lake.
[19:28] Speaker 2: Then she poured some into each of their mugs. She
[19:34] Speaker 2: stirred in the chocolate and dropped pillowy marshmallows on top.
[19:41] Speaker 2: Billy knew this would be the world's best hot chocolate
[19:48] Speaker 2: because he'd worked so hard for it. His mother blew
[19:54] Speaker 2: on both of their mugs to cool them down. Breath
[20:01] Speaker 2: was slow and steady. Before long, she winked at Billy
[20:09] Speaker 2: and took a sip of the sweet, dark chocolate. Billy
[20:17] Speaker 2: followed along and took a sip. The temperature was perfect.
[20:25] Speaker 2: It was the best treat to end this amazing day. Together,
[20:35] Speaker 2: they watched the final bits of daylight disappear behind the
[20:40] Speaker 2: peak and saw a bright moon rise in the sky.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Their campsite glowed in the silver moonlight. The yellow of
[20:54] Speaker 2: their tent looked softer. His mother's coat was a gentler
[21:02] Speaker 2: shade of blue. Different animals seemed to be scurrying about
[21:11] Speaker 2: now getting ready for bed. When he was finished, Billy
[21:19] Speaker 2: unzipped the door of the yellow tent and climbed inside.
[21:28] Speaker 2: He snuggled up tight in his sleeping bag, with his
[21:32] Speaker 2: head resting on his favorite pillow. He thought about his
[21:40] Speaker 2: wonderful day. Billy appreciated his mother from bringing him on
[21:49] Speaker 2: this trip, and he appreciated her perfect hot chocolate. He
[21:58] Speaker 2: appreciated the fish and the birds and the lake. But
[22:05] Speaker 2: more than anything, he appreciated the mountain or helping him
[22:12] Speaker 2: when he needed it the most. So he decided to
[22:19] Speaker 2: take one last big mountain breath. He breathed in, held
[22:29] Speaker 2: it for just a moment, and then let out a
[22:37] Speaker 2: long sigh. He whispered, good night to the mountain which
[22:46] Speaker 2: watched over their campsite with the bright yellow tent, and
[22:55] Speaker 2: then he drifted off into a warm, unhappy sleep.
[24:01] Speaker 1: Everyone
