[0:32] Speaker 1: for a nap, for bed, or just for fun. Story
[0:36] Speaker 1: time is my favorite part of the day, especially when
[0:40] Speaker 1: friends like you are here to join me. In this episode,
[0:46] Speaker 1: we have a real classic for you. It's a story
[0:50] Speaker 1: you might have heard before, written by the famous children's
[0:54] Speaker 1: author Beatrix Potter, who was inspired by the sweet little
[0:59] Speaker 1: animals that roamed around her countryside home in England. Evie
[1:06] Speaker 1: will be reading it for us as we hear all
[1:09] Speaker 1: about a mischievous little bunny called Peter Rabbit. So snuggle
[1:17] Speaker 1: in and close your eyes. Let's get ready to listen
[1:24] Speaker 1: by taking a nice deep breath in and then back out.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Let's do one more of those breathing in and back out,
[1:49] Speaker 1: nicely done. Slowing down our breathing helps us relax, and
[1:55] Speaker 1: we can do it anytime we like. We are more relaxed,
[2:01] Speaker 1: Let's head to the English countryside and begin our story.
[2:28] Speaker 2: Once upon a time there were four little rabbits, and
[2:33] Speaker 2: their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter. They lived
[2:43] Speaker 2: with their mother in a sandbank underneath the root of
[2:48] Speaker 2: a very big fir tree. Now, my DearS, said old
[2:55] Speaker 2: missus rabbit, one morning, you may go into the fields
[3:00] Speaker 2: down the lane, but don't go into mister McGregor's garden.
[3:07] Speaker 2: Your father had an accident there. He was put in
[3:11] Speaker 2: a pie by missus McGregor. Now run along and don't
[3:17] Speaker 2: get into mischief. I'm going out. Then, old missus Rabbit
[3:25] Speaker 2: took a basket and her umbrella and went through the
[3:29] Speaker 2: wood to the baker's. She bought a loaf of brown
[3:35] Speaker 2: bread and five currant buns. Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, who
[3:44] Speaker 2: were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries.
[3:52] Speaker 2: But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to
[3:58] Speaker 2: mister McGregor's garden and squeezed under the gate. First he
[4:06] Speaker 2: ate some lettuces and some french beans, and then he
[4:12] Speaker 2: ate some radishes, And then, feeling rather sick, he went
[4:19] Speaker 2: to look for some parsley. But round the end of
[4:25] Speaker 2: a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but mister McGregor.
[4:34] Speaker 2: Mister McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out
[4:38] Speaker 2: young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter,
[4:46] Speaker 2: waving a rake and calling out stop thief. Peter was
[4:54] Speaker 2: most dreadfully frightened. He rushed all over the garden, for
[5:00] Speaker 2: he had forgotten the way back to the gate. He
[5:06] Speaker 2: lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the
[5:10] Speaker 2: other shoe amongst the potatoes. After losing them, he ran
[5:17] Speaker 2: on four legs and went faster, so that I think
[5:22] Speaker 2: he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately,
[5:27] Speaker 2: run into a gooseberry net and got caught by the
[5:31] Speaker 2: large buttons on his jacket. It was a blue jacket
[5:37] Speaker 2: with brass buttons, quite new. Peter gave himself up for
[5:44] Speaker 2: lost and shed big tears, but his sobs were overheard
[5:52] Speaker 2: by some friendly sparrows, who flew to him in great
[5:57] Speaker 2: excitement and called him to exert himself. Mister McGregor came
[6:06] Speaker 2: up with a sieve which he intended to pop upon
[6:10] Speaker 2: the top of Peter, but Peter wriggled out just in time,
[6:17] Speaker 2: leaving his jacket behind him, and rushed into the toolshed
[6:23] Speaker 2: and jumped into a can. It would have been a
[6:29] Speaker 2: beautiful thing to hide in if it had not had
[6:33] Speaker 2: so much water in it. Mister McGregor was quite sure
[6:41] Speaker 2: that Peter was somewhere in the toolshd, perhaps hidden underneath
[6:47] Speaker 2: a flower pot. He began to turn them over, carefully,
[6:55] Speaker 2: looking under each. Presently Peter sneezed catch. Mister McGregor was
[7:08] Speaker 2: after him in no time and tried to put his
[7:12] Speaker 2: foot upon Peter, who jumped out of the window, upsetting
[7:18] Speaker 2: three plants. The window was too small for mister McGregor,
[7:26] Speaker 2: and he was tired of running after Peter. He went
[7:30] Speaker 2: back to his work. Peter sat down to rest. He
[7:38] Speaker 2: was out of breath and trembling with fright, and he
[7:44] Speaker 2: had not the least idea which way to go. Also,
[7:50] Speaker 2: he was very damp with sitting in that can. After
[7:57] Speaker 2: a time he began to wander about, going lipperty lipperty,
[8:04] Speaker 2: not very fast, and looking all around. He found a
[8:12] Speaker 2: door in a wall, but it was locked and there
[8:16] Speaker 2: was no room for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath.
[8:23] Speaker 2: An old mouse was running in and out over the
[8:27] Speaker 2: stone doorstep, carrying peas and beans to her family in
[8:31] Speaker 2: the wood. Peter asked her the way to the gate,
[8:38] Speaker 2: but she had such a large pea in her mouth
[8:42] Speaker 2: that she could not answer. She only shook her head
[8:46] Speaker 2: at him. Peter began to cry. Then he tried to
[8:54] Speaker 2: find his way straight across the garden, but he became
[8:59] Speaker 2: more more and more puzzled. Presently he came to a
[9:06] Speaker 2: pond where mister McGregor filled his water cans. A white
[9:14] Speaker 2: cat was staring at some goldfish. She sat very very still,
[9:24] Speaker 2: but now and then the tip of her tail twitched
[9:29] Speaker 2: as if it were alive. Peter thought it best to
[9:35] Speaker 2: go away without speaking to her. He had heard about
[9:41] Speaker 2: cats from his cousin, Little Benjamin Bunny. He went back
[9:49] Speaker 2: towards the tool shed, but suddenly, quite close to him,
[9:55] Speaker 2: he heard the noise of a hoe. Scratch, scratch, scratch.
[10:06] Speaker 2: Peter scuttered underneath the bushes, but presently, as nothing had happened,
[10:15] Speaker 2: he came out and climbed upon a wheelbarrow and peeped over.
[10:24] Speaker 2: The First thing he saw was mister McGregor hoeing onions.
[10:32] Speaker 2: His back was turned towards Peter, and beyond him was
[10:38] Speaker 2: the gate. Peter got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow
[10:46] Speaker 2: and started running as fast as he could go along
[10:51] Speaker 2: a straight walk behind some black currant bushes. Mister McGregor
[10:57] Speaker 2: caught sight of him at the corner, but Peter did
[11:02] Speaker 2: not care. He slipped underneath the gate and was safe
[11:09] Speaker 2: at last in the wood outside the garden. Mister McGregor
[11:16] Speaker 2: hung up the little jacket and shoes for a scarecrow
[11:22] Speaker 2: to frighten the blackbirds. Peter never stopped running or looked
[11:29] Speaker 2: behind him till he got home to the big fir tree.
[11:37] Speaker 2: He was so tired that he flocked down upon the
[11:41] Speaker 2: nice soft sand off the floor of the rabbit hole
[11:46] Speaker 2: and shut his eyes. His mother was busy cooking. She
[11:54] Speaker 2: wondered what had happened to his clothes. It was the
[11:59] Speaker 2: same second little jacket and pair of shoes that Peter
[12:03] Speaker 2: had lost in a fortnight. I'm sorry to say that
[12:09] Speaker 2: Peter was not very well during the evening. His mother
[12:15] Speaker 2: put him to bed and made some camomile tea, and
[12:20] Speaker 2: she gave a dose of it to Peter one tablespoon
[12:25] Speaker 2: to be taken at bedtime. But Flopsy, Mopsie and Cottontail
[12:34] Speaker 2: had bread and milk and blackberries for supper. The end
[13:10] Speaker 2: must
