[0:10] Speaker 1: called The Sleepy Tale of t moon Mass. Hey friend,
[0:18] Speaker 1: it's Tom. I'm glad you could make it here for
[0:21] Speaker 1: story time today. It's always a pleasure to have your company.
[0:28] Speaker 1: This story is based on a fairy tale that comes
[0:31] Speaker 1: from Indonesia. If you've never heard of Indonesia, that's okay.
[0:38] Speaker 1: It's a country made up of many islands. Some are
[0:43] Speaker 1: big and some are small. For this story, we're traveling
[0:49] Speaker 1: to one particular island called Java to hear about a
[0:54] Speaker 1: wonderful young woman called t moon Mass who outsmarts a
[1:01] Speaker 1: My friend Jessica is here to read it to us.
[1:06] Speaker 1: I hope you're just as excited as I am to
[1:09] Speaker 1: hear it. So let's get our imaginations warmed up by
[1:15] Speaker 1: taking a nice, full breath together. Breathe in deeply and
[1:26] Speaker 1: breathe out perfect. Now we're ready to hear Jessica's story,
[1:38] Speaker 1: So begin by imagining an island covered in lush, green jungle.
[1:46] Speaker 1: It's floating in a tropical turquoise sea, and this is
[1:53] Speaker 1: where our story begins.
[2:08] Speaker 2: Many years ago, when Indonesia was still young, there lived
[2:13] Speaker 2: a humble and loving lady who wanted very badly to
[2:18] Speaker 2: have a child. She lived alone in a small home
[2:23] Speaker 2: on the island of Java, which in those days was
[2:27] Speaker 2: still full of magic. The island was home to a lush,
[2:34] Speaker 2: vibrant jungle that tingled with life and melted into beaches
[2:40] Speaker 2: of soft, warm sand that tumbled into a clear, turquoise ocean.
[2:49] Speaker 2: Here and there, across the whole island, volcanoes grew out
[2:55] Speaker 2: of the ground like special cones on the landscape. Some
[3:02] Speaker 2: were tall enough to brush the clouds, but the people
[3:06] Speaker 2: knew that all of them were magic. One morning, this
[3:14] Speaker 2: lady sat by her home in the jungle and gazed
[3:18] Speaker 2: up at one of these volcanoes. The warm sun was
[3:24] Speaker 2: already playing on her skin. She could hear the sounds
[3:30] Speaker 2: of the jungle gently cocooning her in a tropical song.
[3:38] Speaker 2: She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. It
[3:44] Speaker 2: filled her lungs with slightly salty air. Like every morning,
[3:53] Speaker 2: she touched her heart and wished for a child. But
[3:58] Speaker 2: this morning, as she sat quietly wishing for her deepest desire,
[4:06] Speaker 2: she noticed the wind change. It danced and whistled across
[4:13] Speaker 2: her face, ruffling her hair and brushing her eyelashes. Then
[4:22] Speaker 2: a rustling sound grew closer and closer. The lady opened
[4:30] Speaker 2: her eyes to see the green giant of the land
[4:33] Speaker 2: standing above her. He seemed to be made of vines
[4:40] Speaker 2: and plants and earth. He towered above her the size
[4:48] Speaker 2: of a tree. But the lady knew not to be afraid.
[4:56] Speaker 2: She took a deep breath and gently greeted him. The
[5:02] Speaker 2: giant told her that he had heard her prayer and
[5:06] Speaker 2: had come to give her a child. The lady couldn't
[5:12] Speaker 2: believe it. Joy sprung up inside her and filled her
[5:18] Speaker 2: body with a warm glow. She felt her heart fill
[5:24] Speaker 2: with happiness. Then the giant held out a single golden
[5:31] Speaker 2: cucumber seed. He told her to plant it, water it,
[5:38] Speaker 2: and love it for eleven days, and on the twelfth
[5:42] Speaker 2: day a child would appear. He said that she may
[5:49] Speaker 2: keep the child untill its seventeenth birthday, but then it
[5:53] Speaker 2: must be returned, for it will be a magical child,
[5:59] Speaker 2: and he will need to train it to become like him.
[6:05] Speaker 2: The lady was so grateful, so happy, and so excited.
[6:13] Speaker 2: She took the seed and barely thought about what it
[6:16] Speaker 2: might be like to give her child away. One day,
[6:22] Speaker 2: so the lady planted the seed. It immediately grew into
[6:27] Speaker 2: a cucumber plant. She watered it every morning, loved it
[6:35] Speaker 2: all day long with all her heart, and watched as
[6:40] Speaker 2: it steadily grew a huge, golden cucumber. Then, on the
[6:47] Speaker 2: morning of the twelfth day, the cucumber opened inside lay
[6:54] Speaker 2: a beautiful baby girl. The lady scooped her up in
[7:00] Speaker 2: her arms and named her Tea moon Mass. In a
[7:06] Speaker 2: glow of happiness, she carried Tea moon Mass into her
[7:10] Speaker 2: home and began the beautiful work of becoming a mother.
[7:19] Speaker 2: One day, nearly seventeen years later, te moon Mass sat
[7:25] Speaker 2: outside her mother's home, looking up at the volcano. She
[7:31] Speaker 2: had a wide, open face and sleek, smooth hair. Her
[7:38] Speaker 2: fingers dug slightly into the cool earth below her. She
[7:44] Speaker 2: sighed lazily as the warm sun played across her face.
[7:51] Speaker 2: Nothing could be more perfect than this. Then, in her
[7:59] Speaker 2: slow gene, her mother opened the door to their house
[8:06] Speaker 2: in her hand. She carried a small bundle. T moon
[8:12] Speaker 2: Mass watched her come closer and noticed that her face,
[8:17] Speaker 2: soft and lined, was etched with a quiet sadness. Her
[8:24] Speaker 2: mother reached her and smiled a small smile. Timon Mass
[8:32] Speaker 2: opened her lips to speak, but her mother hushed her.
[8:37] Speaker 2: She told timon Mass that the day had a arrived
[8:40] Speaker 2: for her to learn where she had come from. As
[8:45] Speaker 2: her mother told the story of the giant, t moon
[8:49] Speaker 2: Mass became aware of her breath. It was swirling in
[8:55] Speaker 2: her body, calming and soothing. She felt no fear as
[9:03] Speaker 2: she listened, and when her mother had finished, t moon
[9:09] Speaker 2: Mass hugged her and felt her soft buttery skin against hers.
[9:16] Speaker 2: She was so grateful for the loving homes she had
[9:20] Speaker 2: given her. Then her mother held out the small bundle.
[9:28] Speaker 2: T moon Mass took it tenderly in her hands. Inside
[9:34] Speaker 2: were needles, cucumber seeds, and a pot of salt. Her
[9:42] Speaker 2: mother explained that a wise elder of the island had
[9:45] Speaker 2: given her these. T moon Mass must use them to
[9:50] Speaker 2: protect herself from the green giant. But when t moon
[9:57] Speaker 2: Mass asked how to use them, her mother shook her head.
[10:02] Speaker 2: It was only teamon Mass who could discover how they worked.
[10:08] Speaker 2: As her mother left, Tea moon Mass gazed up at
[10:12] Speaker 2: the volcano. It seemed to be calling her sweetly and softly.
[10:22] Speaker 2: Without questioning, Tea moon Mass stood. She knew in her
[10:28] Speaker 2: heart that the answer she needed would lie at the top.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Of it. That night, Tea moon Mass climbed the volcano.
[10:41] Speaker 2: She ran her hands through the jungle plants as she walked,
[10:46] Speaker 2: feeling their waxy leaves between her fingers. The crunch of
[10:52] Speaker 2: her footsteps kept her company. The frogs chirruped and croaked,
[11:00] Speaker 2: and the stars, peeking through the night sky twinkled good
[11:05] Speaker 2: wishes at her. When she reached the top, it was
[11:12] Speaker 2: almost dawn. She gazed out at the view. The whole
[11:19] Speaker 2: islands spread out beneath her like a map. Here and there,
[11:27] Speaker 2: low wispy clouds hung over parts of it like puddles
[11:32] Speaker 2: of milk. A tinge of peach pink light was showing
[11:38] Speaker 2: on the horizon. Tea moon Masse held out her little
[11:44] Speaker 2: bundle as the horizon started to glow brighter. The magic
[11:52] Speaker 2: of the sight sent tingles through her body. Then the
[11:58] Speaker 2: whips of cloud began to melt. They revealed a part
[12:04] Speaker 2: of the island that Tea moon Mass had not seen before.
[12:10] Speaker 2: Jungle did not cover it. It was simply a long,
[12:15] Speaker 2: thin spit of land that extended into the ocean like
[12:19] Speaker 2: an arm. As the golden light of dawn hit her,
[12:27] Speaker 2: te moon Mass understood. She took a deep breath in
[12:34] Speaker 2: and let it fill her with strength. The magic of
[12:40] Speaker 2: the stars above and the volcano beneath her began to
[12:44] Speaker 2: seep into her. She closed her eyes, readying herself for
[12:51] Speaker 2: what she needed to do. She noticed the wind change.
[13:00] Speaker 2: It danced and whistled across her face, ruffling her hair
[13:05] Speaker 2: and brushing her eyelashes. Her time was now. She gracefully
[13:16] Speaker 2: leaped from the volcano and found that she could half fly,
[13:20] Speaker 2: half jump down its slope. She let out a delighted sigh.
[13:30] Speaker 2: She carried on across the island through the jungle, soaring
[13:36] Speaker 2: through the warm air as gracefully as the orangutans she
[13:40] Speaker 2: had seen swinging from the trees. The wind danced behind her,
[13:47] Speaker 2: trying to catch her. A distant rustling followed her. It
[13:56] Speaker 2: was the sound of the Green Giant, but she felt
[14:02] Speaker 2: free and light. Each jump filled her with confidence, and
[14:10] Speaker 2: soon she was at the spit of bare sand that
[14:13] Speaker 2: extended into the ocean like an arm. As she reached
[14:21] Speaker 2: the end of the spit, she turned to face where
[14:24] Speaker 2: she had come from and scattered the needles and cucumber
[14:28] Speaker 2: seeds around her in a great circle. As they touched
[14:34] Speaker 2: the sand, The needle sprang into bamboo plants. The cucumber
[14:41] Speaker 2: seeds swelled into the beginnings of lush vines, trees, and
[14:45] Speaker 2: flowers as they grew around her. Tea moon Mass watched
[14:52] Speaker 2: the green giant. He ran towards the spit of land,
[14:59] Speaker 2: coming close to her new circle of jungle. Then he
[15:05] Speaker 2: reached the spit of land, his feet sinking into it
[15:09] Speaker 2: as he ran faster for timon Mass, but she took
[15:15] Speaker 2: out the small pot of salt and in one movement,
[15:19] Speaker 2: threw it in a great arc out in front of her.
[15:26] Speaker 2: When the salt touched the sand, it transformed into ocean,
[15:31] Speaker 2: making Timon Mass's circle of jungle into a new island.
[15:39] Speaker 2: The water flowed over the bare sand, sweeping the green
[15:43] Speaker 2: Giant off his feet, and as the ocean grew, it
[15:49] Speaker 2: carried him away from Java and tiemon Mass' is new island.
[15:56] Speaker 2: But he laughed as it took him, for he knew
[16:00] Speaker 2: that te Moon Mass had proved herself more magical than him.
[16:06] Speaker 2: It was her time to guard this land. Te Moon
[16:12] Speaker 2: Mass watched as the green Giant left. She felt peace
[16:19] Speaker 2: in her heart. Then she noticed a figure right across
[16:26] Speaker 2: the new stretch of sea. It was her mother, wading
[16:33] Speaker 2: into the water and beginning to swim. Tea moon Mass
[16:39] Speaker 2: hurried to the shore and watched as her mother emerged
[16:43] Speaker 2: from the sea, her face full of love and happiness.
[16:50] Speaker 2: They hugged a tender, warm hug, and teamon Mass took
[16:55] Speaker 2: her mother into the noonly grown jungle. She found the softest,
[17:03] Speaker 2: sweetest patch of jungle leaves, shaded by the quickly forming trees.
[17:11] Speaker 2: Then they laid down side by side, their heads resting
[17:17] Speaker 2: on soft pillows of moss. They each breathed a gentle
[17:25] Speaker 2: sigh of happiness and felt their bodies relax. They felt
[17:34] Speaker 2: the soft touch of the warm air and the relief
[17:38] Speaker 2: of the shade on their skin. Tea moon Mass noticed
[17:45] Speaker 2: how calm she had become. Her mother felt a warm
[17:51] Speaker 2: and welcome sense of peace creep through her. Then together
[18:00] Speaker 2: they drifted gently into a deep, tranquil sleep, and as
[18:09] Speaker 2: they did, the jungle continued to grow around them, weaving
[18:17] Speaker 2: wishes of happiness and well being for the sleeping women inside.
[18:22] Speaker 2: It all was well on Indonesia's newest islands.
[19:34] Speaker 1: US. The wish
