[0:29] Speaker 1: much for joining me again. My name's Tom and I'm
[0:34] Speaker 1: so happy you're here for my favorite part of the day,
[0:39] Speaker 1: story time. It's my turn to read a story to you,
[0:45] Speaker 1: and I'm so excited to do so. This one is
[0:50] Speaker 1: a heartwarming, sleepy tale about a boy in Rio de Janeiro,
[0:56] Speaker 1: the capital of the country Brazil. He dreams of flying,
[1:03] Speaker 1: and in his own way, he'll make his dreams a reality.
[1:10] Speaker 1: So let's get ready to imagine this story by taking
[1:15] Speaker 1: a soothing breath together inhale slowly and exhale. Make sure
[1:30] Speaker 1: you're in a comfy spot, ready to listen, and if
[1:36] Speaker 1: you so wish, you can close your eyes. If you
[1:42] Speaker 1: happen to fall asleep while you listen along, that's quite
[1:47] Speaker 1: all right. You can always come back and listen again
[1:53] Speaker 1: another time. For now, let's begin our story, which starts
[2:02] Speaker 1: on a warm day in Rio de Janeiro. Joe al
[2:27] Speaker 1: sat on the edge of his bed, slipping his feet
[2:32] Speaker 1: into his brown leather sandals. As he fastened the buckles,
[2:39] Speaker 1: the boy heard the familiar sound of a macaw outside
[2:43] Speaker 1: his window. Joel walked over, pulling open the wooden shutters.
[2:53] Speaker 1: There in a nearby tree the sight of a scarlet macaw.
[3:01] Speaker 1: On its head a vibrant red plumage with white around
[3:06] Speaker 1: its eyes and beak. The red feathers continued down onto
[3:12] Speaker 1: its back, where they were met by yellow and green.
[3:19] Speaker 1: It had royal blue feathers across its wings. The bird
[3:26] Speaker 1: looked like it had painted itself by flying through a rainbow.
[3:34] Speaker 1: Joel had always loved birds. His earliest memories were of
[3:39] Speaker 1: watching and learning about the different species that would visit
[3:43] Speaker 1: the tall tree outside his home. The green and violet
[3:49] Speaker 1: wood nymph, hummingbirds, the flaming red Brazilian tanager, and the parrots,
[4:00] Speaker 1: any parrots. He loved them all. Joe Al's mother explained
[4:08] Speaker 1: to him that the tree was just like the neighborhood
[4:12] Speaker 1: in which they lived. Characters dotted throughout, some spaced high,
[4:20] Speaker 1: some low, and some in the middle, but when looked
[4:26] Speaker 1: at as a whole, the brazil wood tree was filled
[4:31] Speaker 1: with colors. Joel watched the scarlet macaw a moment more
[4:40] Speaker 1: wondering where it had already been that morning, And then
[4:46] Speaker 1: the bird leaped from the branch, expanding its blue wings,
[4:52] Speaker 1: gracefully flying away. Joe Al always dreamed of his teacher.
[5:02] Speaker 1: Once asked what he wanted to be when he grew up,
[5:08] Speaker 1: Joel replied that he dreamed of being a bird so
[5:12] Speaker 1: that he could be among the clouds and visit the
[5:16] Speaker 1: tops of trees. Just then, his mother knocked on his
[5:23] Speaker 1: bedroom door. As she entered the room, she could see
[5:28] Speaker 1: the shutters were wide open. She smiled because she knew
[5:34] Speaker 1: without asking why he was distracted, Joel routinely found himself
[5:42] Speaker 1: in daydreams. While gazing out of the window. In the kitchen,
[5:50] Speaker 1: Joel's mother handed him a list of groceries that she
[5:54] Speaker 1: needed him to buy. As the eldest of three children,
[6:00] Speaker 1: Joel often helped his mother with tasks. He asked what
[6:06] Speaker 1: she was making, but she told him it was a surprise.
[6:13] Speaker 1: Joe Al stepped out onto the street and glanced at
[6:18] Speaker 1: the handwritten list at the top, a can of condensed milk, butter,
[6:27] Speaker 1: chocolate sprinkles, and cocoa powder. The boy's heart lifted with joy.
[6:36] Speaker 1: He knew she would be making Brigadero's. These delicious round
[6:44] Speaker 1: chocolate fudgeballs rolled in sprinkles were Joe Owl's favorite treat.
[6:53] Speaker 1: His grandmother used to make them every Sunday, but it
[6:57] Speaker 1: had been some time since they last visited her as
[7:01] Speaker 1: she had been away traveling. Joel walked down the gentle hill.
[7:09] Speaker 1: He waved to his neighbour, Carlos, who was busy painting
[7:14] Speaker 1: his home with a brush. Though Carlos was an older man,
[7:21] Speaker 1: he still enjoyed tending to his simple house just as
[7:25] Speaker 1: much as when he first built it. The fresh orange
[7:30] Speaker 1: paint swept over the faded amber color, bringing vibrancy back
[7:36] Speaker 1: to the simple structure. A young man on his motorbike
[7:43] Speaker 1: whizzed by a pillium passenger on the back. The motor
[7:50] Speaker 1: boys were a familiar sight in this part of Rio.
[7:55] Speaker 1: For just a few coins, they would take you wherever
[7:59] Speaker 1: you needed to go through the streets. They would ride
[8:04] Speaker 1: higher and higher, passed more and more colourful homes as
[8:11] Speaker 1: they climbed the hills all across the city. As Joel
[8:18] Speaker 1: got to the store, his friend Anna appeared from across
[8:22] Speaker 1: the street. She hurried over excitedly, asking Joel to go
[8:29] Speaker 1: down to the beach with her. He apologized, explaining that
[8:36] Speaker 1: his mother had asked him to run some errands. Anna
[8:41] Speaker 1: smiled kindly, encouraging him to join later. Once he finished,
[8:49] Speaker 1: Joel wanted to go with her. Their favorite thing to
[8:53] Speaker 1: do together was climb up the tall rocks and dive
[8:58] Speaker 1: into the Aqua blue sea, a joyful relief from the
[9:04] Speaker 1: humidity of Rio de Geniro. But it would have to
[9:08] Speaker 1: wait for now. The boy stepped into the store. All
[9:15] Speaker 1: around an array of fresh fruits and vegetables, green papayas
[9:23] Speaker 1: still ripening, yellow mangoes, waxy red chilies, and more. The
[9:34] Speaker 1: storekeeper smiled as Joel approached the counter. He handed him
[9:40] Speaker 1: his mother's list, and the storekeeper slipped on his glasses
[9:45] Speaker 1: to take a better look. He told Joao to wait
[9:49] Speaker 1: right there. As he walked around the store gathering the items,
[9:57] Speaker 1: Joel saw the green coconuts near the counter. He knew
[10:03] Speaker 1: that they were not on his mother's list, but today
[10:07] Speaker 1: was a particularly hot day, and he couldn't help but
[10:11] Speaker 1: think about how the fresh coconut water would quench his thirst.
[10:19] Speaker 1: The storekeeper appeared once again with a basketful of items
[10:25] Speaker 1: for jo Al's mother. He told Joel he had to
[10:30] Speaker 1: get the cocoa, which he kept in a large barrel
[10:33] Speaker 1: in the back of the store. Joe Al watched the
[10:38] Speaker 1: storekeeper disappear once more. While he waited, joe Al took
[10:45] Speaker 1: the money his mother gave him from out of his pocket,
[10:50] Speaker 1: then glanced at the items in the basket. He counted
[10:55] Speaker 1: out the coins, feeling their ribbed edges on his fingers,
[11:00] Speaker 1: and placed them gently on the counter. Then the storekeeper
[11:08] Speaker 1: returned in his hand a small tub of cocoa powder.
[11:15] Speaker 1: The storekeeper told Joao how much he loved the scent
[11:19] Speaker 1: of fresh cocoa. He handed over the container and encouraged
[11:25] Speaker 1: Joel to smell it himself. The boy closed his eyes
[11:32] Speaker 1: as he took in the chocolate. He scent. It reminded
[11:37] Speaker 1: him of his grandmother. Jo Al would sit with his
[11:43] Speaker 1: grandmother for hours, talking as she made Brigadero's. She would
[11:50] Speaker 1: ask him about the birds who visited him while she
[11:54] Speaker 1: stirred the chocolate mixture in a bowl. Her grandson would
[11:59] Speaker 1: describe them in great detail, explaining their various sizes and
[12:05] Speaker 1: colorful plumages. Joel loved to spend time with his grandmother
[12:12] Speaker 1: like this. Joel opened his eyes once more, commenting on
[12:21] Speaker 1: the coco's delightful smell. The storekeeper nodded in agreement as
[12:28] Speaker 1: he put the items in a bag. Once they'd exchanged
[12:34] Speaker 1: what was owed, Joel turned to exit. The storekeeper called
[12:41] Speaker 1: after him. When Joel looked back, he saw the man
[12:47] Speaker 1: slicing off the top of a green coconut. He then
[12:51] Speaker 1: slipped a paper straw inside and walked it over to
[12:56] Speaker 1: young Joel. It was too hot of a day to
[13:01] Speaker 1: walk with groceries and not have something to drink, the
[13:06] Speaker 1: storekeeper said. Joel thanked him with a wide smile. It
[13:12] Speaker 1: was indeed a rather warm day in Rio, so he
[13:16] Speaker 1: appreciated the thoughtful gesture. He left the store with a
[13:24] Speaker 1: bag in one hand and the coconut in the other.
[13:29] Speaker 1: He sipped as he walked home. The cool coconut water
[13:34] Speaker 1: was as refreshing as it was delicious, a pure taste
[13:40] Speaker 1: with the faintest sweetness, perfect for humid days like this.
[13:49] Speaker 1: Joe al neared his home and saw Carlos again, still
[13:54] Speaker 1: with a paint brush in his hand. The old man
[14:00] Speaker 1: was now preparing to paint his roof blue, but he
[14:05] Speaker 1: seemed unsure of how to manage it. Joe Al walked
[14:10] Speaker 1: over to Carlos, asking if he might be able to help.
[14:16] Speaker 1: He was feeling generous after receiving the free coconut and
[14:22] Speaker 1: thought he might pay it forward. The boy stirred the
[14:28] Speaker 1: paint with a stick. The blue reminded him of the
[14:33] Speaker 1: scarlet macaw's vibrant wings. Then he poured the color into
[14:39] Speaker 1: a small tray and picked up his brush. Carlos asked
[14:46] Speaker 1: that joe Al be careful as he climbed the ladder
[14:50] Speaker 1: to the roof. Joel reassured Carlos he was steady. He
[14:58] Speaker 1: was used to heights as he often dove from the
[15:02] Speaker 1: rocks of Vigigal Beach. As jo Al got onto the roof,
[15:09] Speaker 1: Carlos stepped carefully up the ladder a little, handing the
[15:13] Speaker 1: paint tray and the brush to the boy. Joel rested
[15:20] Speaker 1: on his knees and dipped the brush into the blue paint.
[15:26] Speaker 1: But before he could apply the first stroke, the boys
[15:30] Speaker 1: saw something far off in the distance, his favorite rock formation.
[15:36] Speaker 1: Down on the beach. Joel could see all the other
[15:42] Speaker 1: children climbing the toll monolith. From this high advantage point,
[15:49] Speaker 1: he watched as one after the other leaped out into
[15:52] Speaker 1: the clear blue water below. Carlos asked joe how if
[16:00] Speaker 1: everything was okay. The boy simply smiled at the old
[16:06] Speaker 1: man and noted how it looks like a great day
[16:10] Speaker 1: at the beach. Then joe Al dipped the paint brush
[16:15] Speaker 1: once again and began sweeping it back and forth across
[16:20] Speaker 1: the roof in slow rhythmic motions. There was something soothing
[16:30] Speaker 1: about painting. Joe Al thought. It was repetitive, but required
[16:36] Speaker 1: your attention, and with each stroke of the brush you
[16:41] Speaker 1: saw your progress unfold. When joe Au arrived home, his
[16:50] Speaker 1: arms and knees were smothered in blue paint. His mother
[16:55] Speaker 1: laughed as she took the groceries from his hands, asked
[17:00] Speaker 1: what had happened to him. Joel explained to his mother
[17:06] Speaker 1: how he helped Carlos paint his roof. As Joel put
[17:11] Speaker 1: the groceries away, he asked his mother if she was
[17:15] Speaker 1: making Brigadero's. She laughed, telling him that his grandmother was
[17:21] Speaker 1: the expert, not her. She then called out for jo
[17:27] Speaker 1: Al's sister and brother. The two children hurried into the
[17:32] Speaker 1: kitchen and clambered up to the countertop. Joe Al watched
[17:39] Speaker 1: his mother as she handed round onions to his sister
[17:43] Speaker 1: and brother, then showed the two children how to peel them.
[17:50] Speaker 1: The family enjoyed cooking together. It had always been one
[17:55] Speaker 1: of their favorite activities, and after the cooking was dune,
[18:00] Speaker 1: they got to eat their creations. That was the best part,
[18:06] Speaker 1: joe Al thought. As joe Al finished with the groceries,
[18:13] Speaker 1: he asked his mother if he was still needed. She
[18:18] Speaker 1: smiled at the boy, telling him he'd been very helpful today,
[18:24] Speaker 1: so he was now free to do what he pleased,
[18:28] Speaker 1: just as long as he was home before it got
[18:31] Speaker 1: too late. Joe Al thanked his mother and hurried out
[18:36] Speaker 1: the door. The breeze cooled his face as he made
[18:43] Speaker 1: his way down the hill. His sandals clapped against the
[18:48] Speaker 1: street with each step. He passed Carlos, whose house was
[18:54] Speaker 1: now completely repainted. He was enjoying a glass of lemonade
[19:01] Speaker 1: and appreciating the new look of his home. Joe arrived
[19:08] Speaker 1: at the bottom of the hill, where it flattened out
[19:11] Speaker 1: and opened up into a glistening bay. The tide rolled in,
[19:19] Speaker 1: breaking gently at the shore and washing over the sand.
[19:26] Speaker 1: Just watching the water felt refreshing. In the middle of
[19:33] Speaker 1: the bay, tall broad rocks rose out of the water
[19:39] Speaker 1: and pointed high towards the clear blue sky. Just beyond them,
[19:47] Speaker 1: birds flew above the crowds, swimming lazily enjoying the ocean's refreshment.
[19:57] Speaker 1: Joe Al's sandals sunk a little with each step as
[20:01] Speaker 1: he walked across the beach, past the many sunbathers happily
[20:06] Speaker 1: enjoying the afternoon sun. He could feel the hot sand
[20:12] Speaker 1: as it scurried under the soles of his feet. As
[20:18] Speaker 1: he neared the water's edge, he stopped walking and slipped
[20:22] Speaker 1: the sandals off. The golden sand filtered between his toes.
[20:31] Speaker 1: Joel hurried toward his favorite rock, the same one he
[20:36] Speaker 1: had seen from Carlos's roof. It was partially submerged in
[20:42] Speaker 1: the blue ocean, such that you could reach it from
[20:45] Speaker 1: the shore and jump off the other end into the
[20:49] Speaker 1: deep waters. He headed toward the rock, watching with excitement
[20:57] Speaker 1: as his friends scrambled up the side with ease. Once
[21:03] Speaker 1: at the peak, they would leap through the air, splashing
[21:08] Speaker 1: down into the sea below. The sight of this brought
[21:13] Speaker 1: back his first memories here. Joe Al was just a
[21:18] Speaker 1: small child when his mother first took him to the
[21:22] Speaker 1: beach and told him that this rock was where the
[21:26] Speaker 1: birds learned to fly. His mother explained that the parent
[21:33] Speaker 1: birds would encourage their children to leap from the top
[21:37] Speaker 1: and flap their wings, knowing that if they fell, they
[21:42] Speaker 1: would be safe in the water below. From the top
[21:48] Speaker 1: of the rock, Anna saw joe Au approaching. She called
[21:54] Speaker 1: out his name, promising to wait for him before she
[21:58] Speaker 1: would jump. The boy dropped his sandals at the foot
[22:03] Speaker 1: of the rock and started to climb. The tan stone
[22:10] Speaker 1: looked almost smooth from a distance, but up close there
[22:15] Speaker 1: were enough crags and crevices to make it easy to scale.
[22:22] Speaker 1: As he went, Jol could see the wet handprints of
[22:26] Speaker 1: his friends who had just gone before him, slowly evaporating
[22:31] Speaker 1: in the sun. When jo Al got to the peak,
[22:37] Speaker 1: Anna's smiling face greeted him. She put out a hand
[22:43] Speaker 1: to help him with the last part of the climb.
[22:47] Speaker 1: Joel felt the cool water on her skin as he
[22:51] Speaker 1: took Anna's hand. She told him she was glad that
[22:56] Speaker 1: he finally made it. As they stood atop the rock,
[23:03] Speaker 1: Anna noticed the blue paint on joe Al's arms and legs.
[23:09] Speaker 1: He explained how he'd helped paint Carlos's roof. Anna commented
[23:16] Speaker 1: that he looked like a brightly colored bird. They both
[23:22] Speaker 1: enjoyed a hearty laugh, and then Anna stepped forward a little,
[23:29] Speaker 1: leaping out into the sky, her arms stretched out, yelling
[23:35] Speaker 1: with joy. As she fell, Anna splashed into the water below.
[23:45] Speaker 1: She looked up at joe Al as he peered out.
[23:50] Speaker 1: Anna told him it was now his turn, encouraging him
[23:54] Speaker 1: to be free, just like a bird. The thought of
[24:00] Speaker 1: the scarlet macaw he had seen earlier that day, flying
[24:05] Speaker 1: away from the brazil wood tree outside his home, Joel
[24:13] Speaker 1: stepped to the edge of the rock and closed his eyes.
[24:19] Speaker 1: He raised his painted arms out wide, as if they
[24:22] Speaker 1: were the macaw's wings. Then he took a deep breath
[24:29] Speaker 1: and leaped forward. The wind blew across his face. As
[24:36] Speaker 1: he flew through the air, he imagined soaring over his neighborhood,
[24:45] Speaker 1: flying over the colorful roofs, and watching the motor boys
[24:49] Speaker 1: from above as they weaved their way through the streets.
[24:56] Speaker 1: He imagined Carlos and the shopkeeper waving up at him
[25:01] Speaker 1: as he soared overhead. Jo Al dreamed of flying across
[25:07] Speaker 1: the hole of Rio di Janeiro, and in this moment,
[25:13] Speaker 1: this split second, he felt that he really could. As
[25:22] Speaker 1: he landed smoothly in the crystal clear water, jo Al's
[25:26] Speaker 1: happy laughter rang almost as loud as the splashing ocean.
[25:34] Speaker 1: The first touch of the water was cool and refreshing.
[25:39] Speaker 1: It spread throughout his body in a wave of relaxation,
[25:44] Speaker 1: revitalizing him after a busy day. Anna smiled as he
[25:51] Speaker 1: re emerged, repeating joyfully, I flew, I flew. Joel and
[26:00] Speaker 1: Anna walked across the beach and back to their neighborhood,
[26:07] Speaker 1: their wet hair slowly drying in the afternoon sun. The
[26:13] Speaker 1: children talked of how the rock never stopped being fun.
[26:18] Speaker 1: They'd still jump from it when they were old and gray.
[26:24] Speaker 1: Then a motor boy drove past with someone familiar on
[26:28] Speaker 1: the back. A surprise, jo Al apologized to Anna, saying
[26:34] Speaker 1: he had to hurry home. As Joel got to his door,
[26:42] Speaker 1: his heart lifted. He could see the familiar figure of
[26:47] Speaker 1: his grandmother in the doorway, hugging his little brother and
[26:52] Speaker 1: sister as they welcomed her into the house. Joel hurried inside,
[27:00] Speaker 1: throwing his arms around her as well. His grandmother took
[27:06] Speaker 1: a large stainless steel pan and placed it on the countertop.
[27:14] Speaker 1: Joel opened the can of condensed milk and handed it
[27:18] Speaker 1: to her. She took his arm, looked at the blue paint,
[27:24] Speaker 1: and asked if he had been painting himself like his
[27:27] Speaker 1: favorite birds in the tree. They both laughed as Joel
[27:34] Speaker 1: explained how he became blue in color. Joel watched his
[27:41] Speaker 1: grandmother pour out the thick condensed milk. It moved slowly,
[27:47] Speaker 1: slipping easily down the inside of the pan, where it
[27:51] Speaker 1: welled at the bottom. Next, she sprinkled the cocoa through
[27:58] Speaker 1: a sieve. The chocolate powder fell gracefully across the creamy
[28:05] Speaker 1: white bass. The boy picked up a wisk and handed
[28:11] Speaker 1: it to his grandmother. She started to stir the cocoa
[28:17] Speaker 1: and the condensed milk together. Joel watched the thick brown
[28:23] Speaker 1: mix turn around and around in the pan. Next, his
[28:31] Speaker 1: grandmother placed the pan onto a small stovetop flame. Joe
[28:39] Speaker 1: Al stirred the mix with a wooden spoon as his
[28:42] Speaker 1: grandmother cut a small wedge of creamy yellow butter. She
[28:49] Speaker 1: slipped it into the pan and it slowly melted as
[28:54] Speaker 1: joe Al turned the spoon around. He had to keep
[28:59] Speaker 1: on stirring until it was shiny and thick, otherwise it
[29:04] Speaker 1: would burn. When the mix was cool, joe Al and
[29:11] Speaker 1: his grandmother rolled it into countless palm sized chocolate balls.
[29:20] Speaker 1: As they worked, jo Al's grandmother told him about her
[29:24] Speaker 1: travels of all the places she had seen. That evening,
[29:32] Speaker 1: after dinner, joe Al and his grandmother sat on the
[29:36] Speaker 1: edge of his bed sharing a few of the delicious brigaderos.
[29:44] Speaker 1: Then a friendly sound came from outside the window. Joe
[29:50] Speaker 1: Al got to his feet as he pulled open the
[29:55] Speaker 1: wooden shutters. Joe Al and his grandmother were greeted by
[30:00] Speaker 1: the beautiful scarlet macaw. It had returned to the brazil
[30:07] Speaker 1: wood tree for a night of rest. The boy told
[30:14] Speaker 1: his grandmother about leaping from the rock earlier that day
[30:20] Speaker 1: and how he felt like he was soaring all over Rio,
[30:24] Speaker 1: just like a bird. As they talked, the sun set
[30:32] Speaker 1: behind the mountains surrounding Rio, the brazil wood tree became
[30:38] Speaker 1: a silhouette against the moonlit sky. Joel's grandmother tucked him
[30:48] Speaker 1: in and said good night. Just before he closed his eyes,
[30:56] Speaker 1: Joel looked once more at the brazil wood tree, where
[31:01] Speaker 1: the scarlet macaw was settling in for sleep too. Joel smiled,
[31:12] Speaker 1: content that he'd lived out his dream. Of flying today
