[0:27] Speaker 1: thanks so much for listening. I'm Tom, and I'm so
[0:33] Speaker 1: happy you've joined us here for story time. Our friend
[0:37] Speaker 1: Chloe will be reading to us on this occasion, and
[0:41] Speaker 1: I think I might take a nice little nap while
[0:44] Speaker 1: I listen along. Maybe I'll even stay asleep for hours
[0:48] Speaker 1: on end. However you plan on listening, I think you'll
[0:53] Speaker 1: love our story. It's about a toy ballerina who has
[0:58] Speaker 1: one very special wish, and we'll witness everything that happens
[1:04] Speaker 1: when her wish comes true. We'll witness it in our imaginations,
[1:12] Speaker 1: of course. So let's get them warmed up with a
[1:17] Speaker 1: nice stretch of our arms and legs, and then a
[1:25] Speaker 1: big breath in through the nose and back out through
[1:33] Speaker 1: the mouth. Perfect. I'll make way for Chloe now as
[1:43] Speaker 1: we begin our story in the town of Sleepyville, where
[1:48] Speaker 1: everyone is tucked in bed ready for sleep.
[2:07] Speaker 2: In the city of Sleepyville, there was a long, snoozy
[2:13] Speaker 2: street on the long snoozy street, there was a hush house.
[2:24] Speaker 2: In the hushed house, there was a peaceful bedroom. And
[2:33] Speaker 2: in the peaceful bedroom, a little girl called Sara Fina
[2:41] Speaker 2: was sleeping in her bed. Before this story keeps going,
[2:49] Speaker 2: there are three important things I need to tell you.
[2:56] Speaker 2: The first thing is that sleepy Ville is a little
[3:01] Speaker 2: bit different from where you or I live. In Sleepyville,
[3:09] Speaker 2: after the sun sets, every house is visited by a
[3:16] Speaker 2: fairy who carries with them a bag of magical dream dust.
[3:27] Speaker 2: These fairies sprinkle the dream dust over everyone who is
[3:33] Speaker 2: sleeping in the house to give them wonderful dreams. The
[3:41] Speaker 2: second thing you need to know is that on the
[3:46] Speaker 2: night when our story takes place, the fairy in charge
[3:53] Speaker 2: of sprinkling magical dream dust in Saraphina's bedroom was a
[4:01] Speaker 2: fairy called Alouette. Alouette was like all fairies, kind and
[4:12] Speaker 2: friendly and hard working and brave, but she was also
[4:21] Speaker 2: a bit different from other fairies. She had terrible allergies.
[4:31] Speaker 2: Whenever she was near a cat, Alouette sneezed and sneezed
[4:40] Speaker 2: and sneezed. The third thing you need to know is
[4:46] Speaker 2: that Serafina had a big, fluffy white cat called Rufus,
[4:54] Speaker 2: who liked to sleep snuggled at the bottom of Seraphina's bed.
[5:01] Speaker 2: Now that you know these three things, let's get back
[5:06] Speaker 2: to the story. Where were we? Ah, that's right, a
[5:16] Speaker 2: girl called Sarafina was sleeping in her bed, and a
[5:24] Speaker 2: big fluffy white cat called Rufus was sleeping too, curled
[5:31] Speaker 2: up in a quilt by Saraphina's feet. The clock chimed,
[5:42] Speaker 2: the bedroom window opened. The fairy Alouette flew inside, clutching
[5:52] Speaker 2: her bag of magical dream dust. Sarafinus was the very
[5:59] Speaker 2: first house Alouette was visiting that night, so the bag
[6:04] Speaker 2: of magical dream dust was filled to the brim. She
[6:12] Speaker 2: flew inside, dipped her hand into the bag of dream dust.
[6:19] Speaker 2: Then her nose crinkled, her throat itched, her eyes started
[6:29] Speaker 2: to water. Was there a cat in this room? Alouette
[6:37] Speaker 2: sneezed three times in a row. She sneezed the dream
[6:44] Speaker 2: dust in her bag all over the room. Some of
[6:52] Speaker 2: the dust settled on the bookshelves, Some of the dust
[6:58] Speaker 2: drifted onto the wardrobe, quite a lot of the dust
[7:04] Speaker 2: landed on the carpet, and the last of the dust
[7:10] Speaker 2: fell onto Serafina's music box, which stood open on top
[7:17] Speaker 2: of the toy chest. Oh dear, said Alouette, that was
[7:26] Speaker 2: rather a lot more dust than necessary. I suppose Serafina
[7:33] Speaker 2: will have extra sweet dreams tonight. She was right by
[7:40] Speaker 2: the way. Serafina dreamed she owned an under the sea
[7:47] Speaker 2: ice cream shop where she sold delicious ice creams in
[7:53] Speaker 2: clamshell cones to all kinds of wonderful sea creatures. Then
[8:04] Speaker 2: Alouette fluttered out the window and onto the next house.
[8:12] Speaker 2: All was quiet in Seraphina's bedroom until the ballerina who
[8:19] Speaker 2: lived in the music box. Her name, by the way,
[8:24] Speaker 2: was Camille, said, Oh dear, I'm absolutely covered in dream dust.
[8:35] Speaker 2: Oh yes, perhaps I should have told you this fourth
[8:40] Speaker 2: very important thing in Sleepyville. Toys can talk. At least
[8:50] Speaker 2: they can talk as soon as the children who own
[8:54] Speaker 2: them have gone to sleep. And because Sara Fina was
[9:01] Speaker 2: sleeping so soundly, all the toys who lived in her
[9:07] Speaker 2: bedroom could now talk as much as they liked. Camille
[9:14] Speaker 2: looked down at the sparkly dust that covered her shoulders
[9:19] Speaker 2: and arms and her fluffy pink tutu. She knew that
[9:27] Speaker 2: this magical dust gave people very sweet dreams, but she
[9:36] Speaker 2: wasn't a person. She was a toy, and toys don't sleep,
[9:46] Speaker 2: which means they don't have dreams. Would the dust have
[9:54] Speaker 2: any effect on her, she wondered. None of the other
[10:00] Speaker 2: toys in Sarafina's bedroom could answer Camille's question, not the
[10:07] Speaker 2: teddy bear, or the wind up bird, or the floppy
[10:13] Speaker 2: bunny or the wooden fox. At last, they all decided
[10:23] Speaker 2: to ask the porcelain doll, who lived on the top
[10:28] Speaker 2: shelf of the bookcase, what she thought. The porcelain doll
[10:35] Speaker 2: was the oldest toy in the bedroom. She had belonged
[10:41] Speaker 2: to Sarafina's mother, and before that to Serafina's mother's mother,
[10:48] Speaker 2: which is why all the other toys thought she might
[10:53] Speaker 2: be able to answer Camille's question about the dream dust.
[11:01] Speaker 2: But the porcelain doll generally kept herself to herself and
[11:08] Speaker 2: only very rarely came out of the clear box she
[11:13] Speaker 2: lived in. The wooden fox climbed to the top of
[11:19] Speaker 2: the bookcase and knocked on the front of the doll's box. Slowly,
[11:30] Speaker 2: the porceland doll opened her box and looked down at
[11:36] Speaker 2: the rest of the toys gathered around. The toy box.
[11:43] Speaker 2: Camille asked her question once again to the porcelain doll.
[11:50] Speaker 2: The porcelain doll closed her eyes and thought at last.
[12:00] Speaker 2: She opened her eyes again once she told the other toys,
[12:07] Speaker 2: very long ago, when she was only a young doll,
[12:13] Speaker 2: a fairy had accidentally sprinkled magic dream dust on the
[12:18] Speaker 2: toys in Seraphina's mother's bedroom. Camille and all the other
[12:26] Speaker 2: toys were eager to know what happened. Did that toy
[12:32] Speaker 2: have a dream? No, the porcelain dolls shook her head.
[12:41] Speaker 2: Toys don't sleep, which means they don't have dreams, at
[12:49] Speaker 2: least not in the way that people do. But toys
[12:55] Speaker 2: do have wishes, and when magic dreamed us falls on
[13:03] Speaker 2: top of a toy, it brings their wishes to life
[13:09] Speaker 2: for just as long as a dream. Camille's eyes went
[13:16] Speaker 2: bright with excitement. For as long as she could remember,
[13:23] Speaker 2: Camille had only ever had one dream. She dreamed of
[13:33] Speaker 2: being able to dance like a real ballerina. Until now,
[13:42] Speaker 2: she had never been able to. She was glued very
[13:48] Speaker 2: tightly to the bottom of the music box, and she
[13:54] Speaker 2: could only ever spin round and round in a circle.
[14:02] Speaker 2: Her arms were stuck in one position up over her head.
[14:10] Speaker 2: Her legs were stuck in one position too, with her
[14:15] Speaker 2: left leg very stiff and straight, and her right leg
[14:21] Speaker 2: kicking outwards with one perfectly pointed toe. She loved to
[14:30] Speaker 2: spin in a circle whenever Seraphina turned the key in
[14:35] Speaker 2: the music box, but she wished she could know what
[14:41] Speaker 2: it felt like to really dance. Would her wish come true?
[14:53] Speaker 2: She felt a strange tingling started at the top of
[15:02] Speaker 2: her head, then crept down her spine. It spread out
[15:11] Speaker 2: along her arms and all the way to the tips
[15:17] Speaker 2: of her fingers. It traveled through her belly and down
[15:26] Speaker 2: her legs and all the way to the bottom of
[15:32] Speaker 2: her feet. As soon as the tingling stopped, Camille found
[15:41] Speaker 2: she was no longer stuck to the base of the
[15:45] Speaker 2: music box. She pointed one toe and then another. She
[15:56] Speaker 2: waved her arms, she flapped her hand, and she twisted
[16:02] Speaker 2: her head from side to side. It was so wonderful
[16:10] Speaker 2: to move anyway she wanted. The other toys in the
[16:17] Speaker 2: bedroom were overjoyed. The teddy Bear helped Camille down from
[16:25] Speaker 2: the music box on top of the toy chest. The
[16:31] Speaker 2: rest of them gathered around. Even the porcelain doll clambered
[16:38] Speaker 2: slowly down from her place on the top of the
[16:42] Speaker 2: bookshelf to join in the excitement. Camille felt a little
[16:50] Speaker 2: bit shaky at first. She wasn't used to moving around.
[16:57] Speaker 2: She had to take some deep breaths, yes, in and out,
[17:05] Speaker 2: in and out before she felt steady. But once she
[17:13] Speaker 2: did feel steady, there was no stopping her. She leapt
[17:21] Speaker 2: high into the air. She skipped across the rug. She
[17:28] Speaker 2: played a game of marbles. She tossed a red rubber
[17:36] Speaker 2: ball back and forth with the wooden fox. Then the
[17:44] Speaker 2: teddy Bear had a wonderful idea. He opened the toy
[17:51] Speaker 2: chest and brought out all of Saraphina's instruments. There was
[18:02] Speaker 2: a toy piano, a xylophone, a tambourine, and a little drum.
[18:13] Speaker 2: The toys gathered round. The wind up bird pecked its
[18:19] Speaker 2: beak on the keys of the toy piano. The floppy
[18:24] Speaker 2: bunny played the xylophone, The wooden fox shook the tambourine
[18:31] Speaker 2: between its paws, and the teddy bear beat the drum.
[18:39] Speaker 2: Camille closed her eyes and listened to the cheerful jingle
[18:45] Speaker 2: jangle of the music. She paid attention to the way
[18:51] Speaker 2: her fingers twitched in time to the melody and the
[18:55] Speaker 2: way her toes wiggled to the beat. Then she flung
[19:03] Speaker 2: her arms wide, leapt into the middle of the toy
[19:09] Speaker 2: room rug and danced. She did pirouettes and arabesques. She
[19:20] Speaker 2: dwelled and swelled, She turned cartwheels and even did a somersault.
[19:31] Speaker 2: She danced so much that she kicked up some of
[19:36] Speaker 2: the magical dream dust that had settled on the carpet.
[19:42] Speaker 2: The dust flew onto the window sill, and then something
[19:48] Speaker 2: rather magical happened. The window flew open, A night breeze
[19:58] Speaker 2: blew in, and it carried with it what looked like
[20:05] Speaker 2: a piece of paper. The paper settled on the floor,
[20:12] Speaker 2: and the toys gathered around to examine it. It was
[20:18] Speaker 2: more than just a piece of paper. It was a ticket,
[20:28] Speaker 2: it said, Sleepyville City Ballet Admit One the porcelain dole
[20:38] Speaker 2: pulled out her reading glasses and examined the date.
[20:46] Speaker 3: This ticket is for a ballet concert that is happening tonight,
[20:53] Speaker 3: she said, But how would Camille get to the ballet concert?
[21:02] Speaker 2: It was happening all the way over in the Sleepyville
[21:06] Speaker 2: City Ballet concert Hall. Meanwhile, Camille had never even left
[21:16] Speaker 2: Sarafina's room. The breeze rippled through the room again, and
[21:24] Speaker 2: it lifted the paper ticket a few inches off the floor. Suddenly,
[21:34] Speaker 2: Camille knew just what she needed to do. She hopped
[21:40] Speaker 2: lightly on to the top of the ticket and sat
[21:45] Speaker 2: on it like it was a magic carpet. The breeze
[21:51] Speaker 2: lifted the ticket and Camille higher and higher into the air.
[22:00] Speaker 2: Camille and the ticket drifted together out of the window.
[22:08] Speaker 2: Camille waved goodbye to all the toys in the bedroom
[22:13] Speaker 2: and promised she would be back soon. Riding on top
[22:20] Speaker 2: of her ticket, Camille flew over the streets and rooftops
[22:25] Speaker 2: of Sleepyville. As she came close to the center of
[22:31] Speaker 2: the city, the buildings grew taller and grander. At last,
[22:41] Speaker 2: she was floating above the concert hall. Below. She saw
[22:48] Speaker 2: people dressed in fancy ball gowns and elegant tuxedos streaming
[22:55] Speaker 2: into the concert hall. She heard the lively chatter, and
[23:03] Speaker 2: from deeper inside the building, the strains of the orchestra
[23:08] Speaker 2: instruments being tuned. Camille's paper ticket floated above the heads
[23:17] Speaker 2: of the crowd through the lobby, where a chandelier sparkled
[23:24] Speaker 2: into the concert hall and up to the balcony to
[23:30] Speaker 2: a front row seat that had a perfect view of
[23:35] Speaker 2: the stage. Heavy red velvet curtains were drawn shut over
[23:44] Speaker 2: the stage. Camille wondered what was going on behind the curtains.
[23:54] Speaker 2: She imagined ballerinas and ballerinos stretching their arms and their legs,
[24:01] Speaker 2: lacing up their point shoes, applying their makeup, and climbing
[24:08] Speaker 2: into their ornate costumes. The lights dimmed, the concert hall
[24:19] Speaker 2: went dark, and the audience went silent. The red velvet
[24:28] Speaker 2: curtains drew open. A spotlight illuminated the stage. Camille's heart
[24:41] Speaker 2: fluttered as she watched the dancers. She had never experienced
[24:49] Speaker 2: anything so beautiful in her life. She loved it all.
[25:00] Speaker 2: She loved the way the dancers fluttered and leaped and
[25:04] Speaker 2: pirouetted across the stage. She loved their glittery tutos and leotards.
[25:15] Speaker 2: She loved the way the music from the orchestra could
[25:18] Speaker 2: sometimes be very sweet and soft and could sometimes be
[25:25] Speaker 2: loud and soaring. She loved the way the audience stood
[25:32] Speaker 2: in their seats and clapped at the end of the show,
[25:37] Speaker 2: and the way the dancers all came out to curtsy
[25:41] Speaker 2: and bow while people in the very front row threw
[25:46] Speaker 2: flowers up onto the stage. After everyone else in the
[25:53] Speaker 2: concert hall had stood up from their seats and left,
[25:58] Speaker 2: Camille states where she was. She didn't want her night
[26:06] Speaker 2: at the ballet to be over, and as the hall
[26:12] Speaker 2: grew very quiet around her, she had an idea. She
[26:21] Speaker 2: wondered if she would be brave enough to do what
[26:26] Speaker 2: she was planning. But there's something about a special wish
[26:35] Speaker 2: coming true that can make even the tiniest toy ballerina
[26:41] Speaker 2: feel braver than usual. So Camille plucked up her courage
[26:52] Speaker 2: and walked right up to the stage. She used one
[26:59] Speaker 2: of the velvet chords dangling from the curtains to climb
[27:04] Speaker 2: up onto the stage itself. She breathed in, deeply, catching
[27:14] Speaker 2: the scent of furniture polish that drifted up from the
[27:19] Speaker 2: stage floorboards. She pointed her toe, she stretched out her arm.
[27:33] Speaker 2: She started to dance, all alone in the empty theater.
[27:44] Speaker 2: But Camille wasn't quite so alone as she thought. The
[27:53] Speaker 2: orchestra conductor was still packing away his sheet music when
[28:01] Speaker 2: a movement on the stage caught his eye. He looked
[28:10] Speaker 2: at the little toy ballerina dancing so beautifully and smiled.
[28:22] Speaker 2: He beckoned the other musicians to come out from backstage.
[28:32] Speaker 2: One by one, they picked up their instruments and began
[28:39] Speaker 2: to play. The music filled Camille's ears and echoed out
[28:50] Speaker 2: through the empty concert hall. She could feel its vibrations
[28:58] Speaker 2: in the floorboard. Every time her feet landed on the stage,
[29:07] Speaker 2: it sounded exquisite. She found herself leaping higher and spinning
[29:18] Speaker 2: more wildly than she had ever dreamed possible. The noise
[29:28] Speaker 2: of the orchestra caught the attention of one of the
[29:32] Speaker 2: stage hands, and she walked back into the hall to
[29:37] Speaker 2: see what was going on. When she saw Camille dancing,
[29:47] Speaker 2: she ran to turn on the spotlight. Camille gasped. Now
[29:58] Speaker 2: the stage was bathed in dazzling golden light. The dancers
[30:08] Speaker 2: too heard the music and saw the lights coming from
[30:13] Speaker 2: inside the hall, and they crept back inside, filling the
[30:19] Speaker 2: front row seats. When Camille finally finished her dance, they
[30:29] Speaker 2: all applauded. The prima Ballerina plucked a single petal from
[30:39] Speaker 2: her bouquet of roses and presented it to Camille. Camille
[30:49] Speaker 2: took about her wish really had come true. Back in
[31:01] Speaker 2: Seraphina's room, Camille told all the other toys about her
[31:09] Speaker 2: magical night. She knew she would remember it forever, but
[31:22] Speaker 2: her arms and legs were tired now, and she longed
[31:28] Speaker 2: for the comfort of her beautiful music box. She climbed
[31:38] Speaker 2: back in, ready for the morning when Sarafina would wake
[31:45] Speaker 2: from her sleep, ready to turn the music box key
[31:52] Speaker 2: and admire Camille as she danced.
