[0:38] Speaker 1: I'm Tom and I'm really happy you're here for this
[0:41] Speaker 1: very wintry episode of Snuggle, where we'll be returning to
[0:46] Speaker 1: Animal Town for a sixth time. Don't worry if you're
[0:51] Speaker 1: yet to hear our other Animal Town stories. You can
[0:55] Speaker 1: listen to this one now and go back to enjoy
[0:59] Speaker 1: the others any time you'd like. On this chilly winter's day,
[1:06] Speaker 1: the animal children go ice skating on the frozen river.
[1:12] Speaker 1: We'll meet a little shaden chipmunk as he joins the
[1:16] Speaker 1: bigger animals on the ice and learns a wonderful life
[1:21] Speaker 1: lesson from his lovely grandmother. But first it's time for
[1:28] Speaker 1: us to get all snug and cozy and ready to
[1:33] Speaker 1: use our imaginations, because that is where Animal Town exists,
[1:40] Speaker 1: in the land of imagination. So make sure you're comfy
[1:46] Speaker 1: and warm, and then close your eyes it's much easier
[1:55] Speaker 1: to use your imagination to the fullest with your eyes shut.
[2:02] Speaker 1: Now take a long breath in and then blow it
[2:09] Speaker 1: out slowly and quietly. Now we're ready, So let's head
[2:19] Speaker 1: to Animal Town. On a cold, crisp winter's morning, the
[2:40] Speaker 1: winter sun was shining in Animal Town. The air was
[2:46] Speaker 1: cold and clean, and the sunshine sparkled on the frozen river.
[2:54] Speaker 1: Wintertime had well and truly arrived in Animal Town. It
[3:00] Speaker 1: was a beautiful time in this little woodland place. Snow
[3:06] Speaker 1: covered the dirt streets, and snowflakes rest on the branches
[3:11] Speaker 1: of the trees like little white diamonds. Of course, Animal
[3:20] Speaker 1: Town is a beautiful place at any time of the year.
[3:25] Speaker 1: It's a lovely town in the land of imagination. Everything
[3:31] Speaker 1: in it is made from nature. The streets, as I've
[3:37] Speaker 1: just mentioned, are made from dirt. Some of the houses
[3:43] Speaker 1: are too. They are cozy dens dug out in the
[3:48] Speaker 1: ground beneath the trees. Others are tree houses. Leafy trees
[3:57] Speaker 1: grow all along the streets, and these are home to
[4:02] Speaker 1: many of the animals that live there. One side of
[4:08] Speaker 1: Animal Town has a big grassy meadow along it where
[4:13] Speaker 1: berries grow in the summer. Sun and snow piles up
[4:18] Speaker 1: in the winter. Along the other side of town flows
[4:25] Speaker 1: the river at least it flows during spring, summer, and autumn,
[4:33] Speaker 1: whereas in the wintertime the river doesn't flow at all.
[4:40] Speaker 1: Instead it freezes into solid ice. Yes, Animal Town is
[4:50] Speaker 1: beautiful at any time of year, but it has a
[4:54] Speaker 1: special sparkling beauty during winter when the snow and ice
[5:00] Speaker 1: shine brightly in the cold air. And that sparkling wintry
[5:09] Speaker 1: scene makes the little animals think about one of their
[5:13] Speaker 1: absolute favorite winter time activities, ice skating. For when the
[5:22] Speaker 1: river is truly frozen and the ice lies thick and
[5:27] Speaker 1: solid across its surface, the animals can put on their
[5:32] Speaker 1: ice skates and go gliding across the icy river. And
[5:41] Speaker 1: that was just what the animal children were getting ready
[5:45] Speaker 1: to do on this beautiful wintry day. It had been
[5:53] Speaker 1: winter for some time now. Snow had fallen one day,
[6:00] Speaker 1: then again on another day, and fallen yet more on
[6:05] Speaker 1: many other days, until eventually it covered the tops of
[6:12] Speaker 1: the tree houses with a thick layer, and the dirt
[6:16] Speaker 1: streets too. It piled up along the sides of the
[6:23] Speaker 1: streets until the animals shoveled it away from the doors
[6:29] Speaker 1: to their cozy dens. The river had frozen earlier in
[6:36] Speaker 1: the winter too, but it had been a thin layer
[6:41] Speaker 1: of ice before, not thick or solid enough for skating on,
[6:48] Speaker 1: not until last night. Last night, as the stars shone
[6:56] Speaker 1: in the quiet dark, a cold wind had whistled through
[7:02] Speaker 1: the very tops of the treehouses in Animal Town. Sometime
[7:10] Speaker 1: in the middle of that cold night, as all the
[7:14] Speaker 1: animals slept in their warm and cozy beds, the river
[7:20] Speaker 1: had frozen all the way down deep, and that meant
[7:26] Speaker 1: that now the ice was so thick and so solid
[7:32] Speaker 1: that it would hold any animal who wanted to skate
[7:35] Speaker 1: on it. That's what old missus Chipmunk said, and everyone
[7:43] Speaker 1: in animal Town agreed that she knew everything there was
[7:47] Speaker 1: to know about skating on the frozen river. So the
[7:56] Speaker 1: little children of animal Town were all searching in boxes
[8:00] Speaker 1: for their ice skates. This morning, the squirrel children had
[8:06] Speaker 1: found theirs and were waiting eagerly for the bunny children
[8:11] Speaker 1: to come outside with their skates too. The giraffe brother
[8:18] Speaker 1: had his skates and was helping his baby sister find hers,
[8:27] Speaker 1: and the chipmunk cousins were already hurrying towards the frozen
[8:31] Speaker 1: river with skates swinging from their little paws and warm
[8:37] Speaker 1: scarves wrapped around their necks. Are you ready to skate?
[8:46] Speaker 1: Called out big cousin Charlie Chipmunk. Of course, answered middle
[8:53] Speaker 1: cousin Chandra Chipmunk, swinging her silver skates. Let's go. Little
[9:03] Speaker 1: cousin Chaden Chipmunk didn't say a thing. He was too
[9:09] Speaker 1: busy hurrying his little legs as fast as he could go,
[9:14] Speaker 1: trying to keep up with his bigger cousins. Mind you,
[9:21] Speaker 1: he was just as ready as anyone to get out
[9:24] Speaker 1: on the ice. He might be small, and he might
[9:30] Speaker 1: have to hurry to keep up, but he loved the
[9:34] Speaker 1: winter and the ice and snow, and he was full
[9:41] Speaker 1: of determination to learn to skate, just as well as
[9:47] Speaker 1: any animal in animal Town. His grandmother was old Missus Chipmunk.
[9:57] Speaker 1: She had told him that determination was more important than
[10:02] Speaker 1: big long legs, or big strong arms, or anything else
[10:08] Speaker 1: that the older animals had and Shadon didn't. When Shadon
[10:15] Speaker 1: had asked her exactly what determination meant, she'd explained that
[10:22] Speaker 1: it meant not giving up. If at first you don't succeed,
[10:30] Speaker 1: try try again. His grandmother had told him that's determination,
[10:41] Speaker 1: So that was just what little Shaden Chipmunk was planning
[10:45] Speaker 1: to do. He hustled along on his short legs, almost
[10:53] Speaker 1: but not quite, keeping up with middle cousin Chandra. Just
[11:00] Speaker 1: then the river came into view, and for a moment,
[11:06] Speaker 1: Little Shadon forgot all about keeping up. He stared at
[11:13] Speaker 1: the frozen river, thinking it was the most beautiful thing
[11:19] Speaker 1: he'd ever seen. The icy river was flat and smooth
[11:26] Speaker 1: as could be. Sunlight sparkled and glinted off it. Tall
[11:35] Speaker 1: leafy trees rose on the far side of the river,
[11:39] Speaker 1: covered in powdery white snow. Shadan stared for a moment,
[11:48] Speaker 1: just looking, and then he remembered to hurry on, going
[11:55] Speaker 1: even faster now that the icy river was in sight.
[12:03] Speaker 1: At the river's edge, big cousin Charlie Chipmunk helped Chadam
[12:08] Speaker 1: put on his skates and tied the laces into tight knots.
[12:17] Speaker 1: Then the three Chipmunk cousins all set out onto the ice.
[12:24] Speaker 1: It sure was slippery. Chadon nearly slipped over, but cousin
[12:32] Speaker 1: Chandra held his paw and they edged out onto the
[12:37] Speaker 1: smooth ice together. Big cousin Charlie was gliding and sliding
[12:46] Speaker 1: all over the place. Chandra and Schaden were more cautious,
[12:54] Speaker 1: but little by little they made their way towards the
[12:58] Speaker 1: middle of the Frozer River. Chadan slid one foot forward slowly, slowly, slowly.
[13:12] Speaker 1: Then he slid to the other foot forward, slowly, slowly, slowly.
[13:23] Speaker 1: He was starting to get the hang of it when
[13:26] Speaker 1: his feet slid out from under him and he plopped
[13:31] Speaker 1: right down onto the cold ice. Whoops. Chadum was startled.
[13:40] Speaker 1: Ice skating was not as easy as Charlie and the
[13:44] Speaker 1: other big animals made it look. But chadm remembered what
[13:50] Speaker 1: his grandmother had said, if at first you don't succeed,
[13:56] Speaker 1: try try again, And so that was what he did.
[14:06] Speaker 1: Somehow he got himself over onto his paws and knees
[14:11] Speaker 1: on the slippery ice. He carefully pushed himself back to
[14:17] Speaker 1: his feet, and again he began to slide forward, one
[14:25] Speaker 1: foot at a time, slowly, slowly, slowly. Jaden kept at it, patiently,
[14:37] Speaker 1: working on his ice skating and trying again and again
[14:44] Speaker 1: with all of his determination. And do you know something,
[14:52] Speaker 1: he began to enjoy himself. And what is more, he
[14:59] Speaker 1: began to film more more comfortable on the ice. He
[15:04] Speaker 1: started to feel comfortable enough that as he slid carefully
[15:09] Speaker 1: forward and around the river, he was able to look
[15:13] Speaker 1: up and enjoy the view. He looked at the trees
[15:20] Speaker 1: along the side of the river covered in powdery white snow.
[15:27] Speaker 1: He looked at the woods beyond them, and he looked
[15:31] Speaker 1: at the quiet streets of animal town. He really was
[15:37] Speaker 1: having fun. He still slid down onto his fairy bottom
[15:45] Speaker 1: now and again, and had to push himself back up
[15:49] Speaker 1: in a scramble of pores and skates, and he still
[15:56] Speaker 1: skated along very very slowly, not fast like big cousin
[16:02] Speaker 1: Charlie and the other bigger animals, not just yet. But
[16:11] Speaker 1: he was enjoying skating in a way that was just
[16:15] Speaker 1: right for him. And he knew that with time and determination,
[16:22] Speaker 1: he would become better and better. Some day he would
[16:30] Speaker 1: be just as good as any of the other animals.
[16:36] Speaker 1: And that was enough for little cousin Shaden Chipmunk. He
[16:44] Speaker 1: skated carefully around the frozen river on his short legs.
[16:51] Speaker 1: He listened to the happy sounds of the other animal
[16:55] Speaker 1: children gliding on the ice. The bunny children, squirrel children,
[17:04] Speaker 1: and giraffe children had all arrived by now and were
[17:09] Speaker 1: skating around too, so were most of the other animal
[17:14] Speaker 1: children from the animal town's school. Even the little raccoon
[17:20] Speaker 1: babies were there, trying their best to join in with
[17:25] Speaker 1: the fun. Jaden carefully skated around and looked at the
[17:33] Speaker 1: beautiful wintry scene surrounding him. He felt happy, and he
[17:41] Speaker 1: felt proud too. After all, he might be small, but
[17:49] Speaker 1: he was full of big determination, and that, he knew,
[17:58] Speaker 1: was what really counted. He could learn to skate, and
[18:05] Speaker 1: he knew now that he could try other things too.
[18:10] Speaker 1: He didn't need to be afraid of trying new activities
[18:15] Speaker 1: or worried that he might not be able to do
[18:18] Speaker 1: them if he didn't succeed at first. He would just
[18:25] Speaker 1: try try again, as his grandmother had said. He would
[18:34] Speaker 1: try many things, he thought, and with time he would
[18:41] Speaker 1: probably get good at many of them. But for now
[18:48] Speaker 1: he was just having fun, carefully sliding around the ice
[18:54] Speaker 1: and looking at the beautiful animal town winter all around him.
[19:02] Speaker 1: He smiled happily at the other little animals. As the
[19:08] Speaker 1: winter morning faded into afternoon and the sun began to
[19:13] Speaker 1: hide behind the trees, Shaden skated and looked and smiled
[19:25] Speaker 1: all through the afternoon until the shadows grew dark On
[19:30] Speaker 1: the frozen river, and the animal parents caught their children
[19:35] Speaker 1: home for dinner and bedtime. Then Shaden ran back to
[19:44] Speaker 1: his family's cozy home. He carefully put away his skates,
[19:51] Speaker 1: ready to practice again the next day. He ate his
[19:58] Speaker 1: warm dinner and took his warm bath, and snuggled down
[20:05] Speaker 1: into his warm bed for a cozy night's sleep as
[20:10] Speaker 1: the cold winter wind blew outside. He sat oh so
[20:20] Speaker 1: deeply all night long until the morning sun woke him up.
[20:30] Speaker 1: Then he went skating again with his cousins and the
[20:35] Speaker 1: other little animal children. He skated many times during that long,
[20:44] Speaker 1: sparkling winter. He often practiced on the weekends and in
[20:52] Speaker 1: the afternoons when school had finished, during the times when
[20:57] Speaker 1: he wasn't busy doing something else else. Little by little,
[21:06] Speaker 1: he did get better, just as he had known he would,
[21:13] Speaker 1: until one day he could glide and slide nearly as
[21:19] Speaker 1: fast as many of the bigger animals, even if his
[21:25] Speaker 1: legs were still shorter, and he couldn't quite keep up
[21:29] Speaker 1: with big cousin Charlie. No matter what, though, he always
[21:38] Speaker 1: remembered to look around at the beautiful trees covered in
[21:44] Speaker 1: powdery snow and the sparkling ice all the way along
[21:50] Speaker 1: the frozen river. He always remembered to have fun, and
[21:58] Speaker 1: he always fell not proud. And that is the story
[22:06] Speaker 1: of how little shaden Chipmunk learned to ice skate. I
[22:13] Speaker 1: hope you liked it, and I hope that you too
[22:18] Speaker 1: will know you're full of determination and you can try
[22:23] Speaker 1: try again. But for now, don't worry too much about
[22:32] Speaker 1: all that. Just look around at the beautiful, sparkling winter
[22:39] Speaker 1: of Animal Town deep inside your imagination, and rest well
[22:52] Speaker 1: until next time, sweet dreams, m N do anything you
[24:08] Speaker 1: need
