[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to snuggle cozy stories for kids. This episode is
[0:10] Speaker 1: called The Magical Wand Shop. Hey friend, my name is Tom,
[0:19] Speaker 1: and I'm so glad you're here for story time. Whether
[0:23] Speaker 1: it's for a nap, for bed, or just for fun.
[0:28] Speaker 1: Story time is my favorite part of the day, especially
[0:32] Speaker 1: when friends like you are here to join me. Sometimes
[0:37] Speaker 1: I like to read stories myself, but it's also really
[0:41] Speaker 1: nice when one of my friends reads them to me. Today,
[0:46] Speaker 1: my friend Elizabeth will read to us. I hope you're
[0:50] Speaker 1: as excited to listen as I am. But first I
[0:55] Speaker 1: was wondering do you believe in magic? Because this story
[1:01] Speaker 1: is about a girl who picks out her very first
[1:05] Speaker 1: wizard's wand. I wish I had a magic wand, but
[1:10] Speaker 1: at least in this story, we can imagine that we do.
[1:16] Speaker 1: Let's get ready to picture this magical world by taking
[1:21] Speaker 1: a nice deep breath together, so breathing slowly and exhale
[1:34] Speaker 1: back out perfect. Now we're ready for Elizabeth to read
[1:43] Speaker 1: our magical story. So picture in your mind a cobblestone
[1:50] Speaker 1: street filled with people chatting, walking, and windows shopping. At
[1:59] Speaker 1: the street corner is an old one shop, and we're
[2:04] Speaker 1: about to head inside.
[2:20] Speaker 2: The door to pemshackles one shop creaked loudly. Tamara smiled
[2:29] Speaker 2: to herself as she pulled it open, her hand lingering
[2:35] Speaker 2: on the metal door handle, she peered into the darkness within. Outside,
[2:46] Speaker 2: the world was bright. The sun sat tall and dazzling
[2:55] Speaker 2: in its nest of blue. It was like a beacon
[3:02] Speaker 2: calling everyone to come out and enjoy its wonderful warmth.
[3:11] Speaker 2: The cobbled streets bust with people milling around, busying themselves
[3:19] Speaker 2: with shopping. Families walked with their children, bags draped over
[3:29] Speaker 2: their shoulders and clutched in their hands. Every bag was
[3:37] Speaker 2: brimming with large leather bound books, wands, and potion bottles.
[3:48] Speaker 2: The air outside crackled with excitement. Inside the shop, it
[3:58] Speaker 2: was quiet and peaceful. Stepping over the threshold, Tamara found
[4:08] Speaker 2: herself in a small room, dimly lit by a single
[4:15] Speaker 2: bulb hanging from the ceiling. A thin stream of sunlight
[4:24] Speaker 2: filtered in through a circular window in the door. She
[4:31] Speaker 2: waited until her eyes adjusted to the dark room before
[4:37] Speaker 2: she let go of the door and allowed it to
[4:41] Speaker 2: swing shut. There were two other people already in the store,
[4:50] Speaker 2: a tall woman and a little boy about Tomorra's age.
[4:58] Speaker 2: The woman wore a big purple hat whose enormous brim
[5:05] Speaker 2: hid almost all of her face. A large white feather
[5:13] Speaker 2: poked out of it, and Tamara pushed down the urge
[5:18] Speaker 2: to touch it. The boy beside her already had a
[5:25] Speaker 2: wand in his hand. He stared at it in awe
[5:31] Speaker 2: and stroked its handle gently. They didn't seem to notice
[5:39] Speaker 2: Tamara's presence yet, and she stayed quiet in the doorway
[5:48] Speaker 2: for a moment. Tamara closed her eyes and inhaled the
[5:55] Speaker 2: scent of wood and mothballs, which reminded her of her
[6:01] Speaker 2: grandmother's attic. The shop smelled old and dusty, with a
[6:10] Speaker 2: hint of cedar and resin. Opening her eyes again, she
[6:19] Speaker 2: looked more closely at her surroundings. In front of her
[6:27] Speaker 2: was a short oak gask and behind it a red
[6:34] Speaker 2: velvet curtain that parted slightly to reveal a long, dark corridor.
[6:45] Speaker 2: She could hear someone moving things around on the other
[6:50] Speaker 2: side of the curtain. Tamara realized she was holding her
[6:58] Speaker 2: breath as she approached the desk. She was finally going
[7:05] Speaker 2: to meet Pemshackle. He was something of a legend in
[7:11] Speaker 2: her household. He was the person who had sold everyone
[7:18] Speaker 2: she knew their wands. Her mother had a Pemshackle wand
[7:26] Speaker 2: as did her grandmother. Excitement buzzed in her stomach. She
[7:35] Speaker 2: couldn't believe it. Here she was ready to get her
[7:42] Speaker 2: very own wand taking her first step towards her future
[7:50] Speaker 2: as a wizard. Tamara's mind flashed with the images of
[7:58] Speaker 2: the stories she had been told ever since she was
[8:03] Speaker 2: a little girl. All she had ever wanted was this
[8:11] Speaker 2: to be like her family, like her mother, to be
[8:16] Speaker 2: a great wizard. This was a moment she had dreamed about.
[8:26] Speaker 2: She couldn't wait to show her mother the wand Pemshackle
[8:31] Speaker 2: helped her chunes When they first left home for the
[8:37] Speaker 2: shopping trip today, Tamara had begged her mother to let
[8:43] Speaker 2: her go into Pemshackles alone. Somehow, it made her feel
[8:50] Speaker 2: more grown up. When she'd imagined this moment in the past,
[8:59] Speaker 2: she was always alone in the shop. This felt like
[9:03] Speaker 2: a private time to her when she and her magic
[9:09] Speaker 2: collided and formed an eternal bond. But she didn't mind
[9:17] Speaker 2: that the woman and the boy were in the shop too.
[9:22] Speaker 2: Now that she was really here, she found the presence
[9:27] Speaker 2: of other people comforting and reassuring. Tamara refocused her attention
[9:37] Speaker 2: on the desk in front of her and the corridor beyond.
[9:43] Speaker 2: She suppressed a grin as she reached a shaky hand
[9:49] Speaker 2: towards the bell on the desk and let it ring once.
[9:58] Speaker 2: Almost immediately she heard what sounded like wood and saw
[10:05] Speaker 2: dust pattering to the floor. She glanced around to see
[10:12] Speaker 2: if the others had noticed the commotion too, but they
[10:17] Speaker 2: were otherwise engaged. The woman's hat was now levitating off
[10:26] Speaker 2: her head. Tamara's eyes widened as she watched the boy
[10:35] Speaker 2: raising his wand in her direction. He seemed just as
[10:41] Speaker 2: surprised to be doing magic as Tamara was to see
[10:47] Speaker 2: him do it. Just then, an old man appeared from
[10:55] Speaker 2: the hallway behind the velvet curtain. He had wiry hair
[11:02] Speaker 2: and thin rimmed glasses perched atop his nose. Can I
[11:10] Speaker 2: help you, he asked Tomrra. His voice was soft and
[11:18] Speaker 2: gentle that seemed to carry the wisdom of ages. When
[11:26] Speaker 2: he spoke, the little boy fumbled and dropped his wand
[11:34] Speaker 2: Tamrra turned just in time to see it roll away
[11:38] Speaker 2: from him across the floor. The woman straightened her hat
[11:46] Speaker 2: on her head. She furrowed her eyebrows as she looked
[11:52] Speaker 2: down at the little boy, who gazed back up at
[11:56] Speaker 2: her shyly and shrugged. Tamara suppressed a giggle and turned
[12:06] Speaker 2: back to face Pemshackle. The skin at the corners of
[12:13] Speaker 2: his eyes crinkled with quiet laughter. She imagined he'd seen
[12:21] Speaker 2: many young wizards in training drop their wands over the years.
[12:30] Speaker 2: Though Tamara suspected he already knew who she was, she
[12:36] Speaker 2: introduced herself politely. I'm Tamara Hilwick, Sir, she said, I'm
[12:46] Speaker 2: here to find my wand Pemshackle smiled and placed his
[12:53] Speaker 2: hands on the desk in front of him. Then he
[12:58] Speaker 2: peered deeply into her eyes. He had a kind face,
[13:07] Speaker 2: Tamara decided. For a few moments, the two of them
[13:14] Speaker 2: stood still, gazing at one another. Then Pemshackle turned and
[13:23] Speaker 2: walked back behind the curtain. When he pushed open the fabric,
[13:31] Speaker 2: Tamara caught sight as hundreds of wooden boxes. Each was
[13:40] Speaker 2: long and thin and painted a different shade of purple, green, blue, yellow, orange,
[13:53] Speaker 2: and red. A few of the boxes at the very
[14:00] Speaker 2: top with silver, black and white, but they were dusty
[14:08] Speaker 2: and looked as though they hadn't been moved in decades.
[14:16] Speaker 2: Pemshackle tapped the ends of a few boxes, and then
[14:21] Speaker 2: turned walking back to the desk. Hold out your hands, please,
[14:32] Speaker 2: he said to her, peering over his glasses. Tamara stretched
[14:40] Speaker 2: her arms out before her so that the tips of
[14:45] Speaker 2: her fingers brushed the bell once more. Pemshackle muttered to
[14:53] Speaker 2: himself quietly as his eyes scanned her palms. When he
[15:02] Speaker 2: was finished doing whatever it was he was doing, Tamara
[15:09] Speaker 2: watched him shuffle back behind the curtain. Through the slim
[15:17] Speaker 2: opening in the fabric, she saw him run his fingertips
[15:23] Speaker 2: across a line of wooden boxes. Perhaps one of them
[15:29] Speaker 2: held her future within it, she thought. She eagerly followed
[15:38] Speaker 2: the movements of his hands with her eyes. There were
[15:43] Speaker 2: so many boxes to choose from. Secretly, Tamara hoped for
[15:52] Speaker 2: a yellow box. It was the color she liked best,
[15:58] Speaker 2: given her love of sunflowers. Having a pretty yellow case
[16:05] Speaker 2: for her wand would be wonderful, She imagined, how nice
[16:13] Speaker 2: it would look in her room. Pemshackles nimble fingers stopped
[16:22] Speaker 2: on a red box, but Tamara couldn't feel disappointed. She
[16:30] Speaker 2: was far too excited. He wiggled the box out of
[16:37] Speaker 2: its plate, wedged among four other boxes. As Tamara held
[16:45] Speaker 2: her breath. Pemshackle moved the curtain out of the way
[16:53] Speaker 2: and returned to the main room where she was standing.
[17:00] Speaker 2: He placed it on the desk in front of her.
[17:05] Speaker 2: Tamara felt her heart begin to beat a little faster.
[17:13] Speaker 2: Could this be it, she wondered. She reached out and
[17:20] Speaker 2: opened the red box. Inside, resting on a bed of
[17:28] Speaker 2: sawdust was a thick, rounded wand. The tip wasn't thin
[17:38] Speaker 2: and pointed like her mother's. Instead, it looked rather stubby.
[17:48] Speaker 2: The handle was quite simple, with no ornate designs and
[17:55] Speaker 2: no fancying graving. The wood didn't seem elegant to Tamara.
[18:05] Speaker 2: In fact, it just looked like an ordinary stick. She
[18:12] Speaker 2: knew she couldn't be picking if the wand turned out
[18:16] Speaker 2: to be a good match, but she didn't feel drawn
[18:22] Speaker 2: to this one. There was no magic paun Pemshackle gestured
[18:31] Speaker 2: to her, and Tamara plucked the wand from the swordust.
[18:39] Speaker 2: It slipped into her fingers with ease, but it felt
[18:45] Speaker 2: wrong somehow. It was much too big for her hand
[18:54] Speaker 2: and too smooth, like it had been oiled. She turned
[19:02] Speaker 2: it over, feeling the hard wood in her palm, before
[19:08] Speaker 2: Pemshackle gave her a small nod of encouragement. She tentatively
[19:17] Speaker 2: flicked her wrist. Absolutely nothing happened. No hats levitated, no
[19:28] Speaker 2: lights flickered. It was as if she'd never touched the
[19:34] Speaker 2: wand at all. The woman and the boy looked over
[19:41] Speaker 2: at her, as though waiting for something to happen. When
[19:48] Speaker 2: nothing did, they turned back to one another. Pemshackle shook
[19:56] Speaker 2: his head and, pulling the wa from Tamara's hand, placed
[20:03] Speaker 2: it gently back in the box. He carried it through
[20:10] Speaker 2: the curtain and slipped it back into their empty spot
[20:15] Speaker 2: on the shelf. Tamara tried to refrain from letting out
[20:23] Speaker 2: a sigh of relief. She didn't know what her wand
[20:30] Speaker 2: would look like, but she knew she didn't want it
[20:34] Speaker 2: to be so ordinary. As she waited for Pemshackle to
[20:42] Speaker 2: pick something else out for her, she listened to the
[20:48] Speaker 2: quiet conversation behind her. The woman apparently was the boy's aunt.
[20:58] Speaker 2: They were waiting for someone to meet them before going
[21:02] Speaker 2: on to finish the rest of their shopping. Tamara looked
[21:09] Speaker 2: over at the boy. He was excited about the wand
[21:15] Speaker 2: he held protectively in his hand. The woman seemed as
[21:23] Speaker 2: though she'd been in this shop a thousand times before.
[21:30] Speaker 2: Tamara wondered how many other nieces and nephews she escorted here.
[21:41] Speaker 2: She also wondered what it was like when the woman
[21:45] Speaker 2: was her own age, the first time she'd come to
[21:50] Speaker 2: Pemshackles for her very first wand. Tomorrow wondered if the
[22:00] Speaker 2: woman had felt the same butterflies that were in her
[22:05] Speaker 2: own stomach now, or if she came in confidently sure
[22:12] Speaker 2: she would be able to find a wand that was
[22:16] Speaker 2: right for her. Tamara could feel her butterflies continuing to
[22:25] Speaker 2: flutter as Pemshackle turned to face her with another box
[22:32] Speaker 2: in his hand. This one was a teal color. It
[22:40] Speaker 2: also wasn't yellow, but hopefully what it held inside would
[22:47] Speaker 2: be just the wand for her. She eased it open,
[22:55] Speaker 2: and Tamara smiled. This was beautiful. It had a spiraling
[23:05] Speaker 2: tail that reminded her of a mermaid. The tip of
[23:12] Speaker 2: the wand was pointed, and it was made from a
[23:16] Speaker 2: light oak. When she picked it up, she was surprised
[23:24] Speaker 2: to feel how delicate it was. But while this wand
[23:32] Speaker 2: didn't give her the same wrong feeling as the last one,
[23:38] Speaker 2: she thought it was too light and too delicate. It was,
[23:46] Speaker 2: though it would break into a million pieces in her
[23:50] Speaker 2: hands if she wasn't careful with it. Hamshackle nodded at her.
[24:01] Speaker 2: Once again, she waved it gently through the air for
[24:09] Speaker 2: the second time, absolutely nothing happened. Gingerly, she placed the
[24:19] Speaker 2: wand back into its bed of swordust. Once it was
[24:24] Speaker 2: out of her hands, she gave a sigh of relief.
[24:30] Speaker 2: She hadn't realized until now just how much she'd been
[24:35] Speaker 2: afraid of breaking it. Slowly, she pushed the box across
[24:44] Speaker 2: the desks towards Pemshackle. His eyes glittered and he winked
[24:51] Speaker 2: at her before turning back to their heavy curtain tomorrow.
[25:00] Speaker 2: Sarah didn't say anything out loud, but she was beginning
[25:04] Speaker 2: to wonder if she'd ever find the perfect one. But
[25:11] Speaker 2: Pemshackle didn't seem worried. He was patient and kind as
[25:19] Speaker 2: he continued browsing the wooden boxes. She heard him start
[25:28] Speaker 2: humming to himself while he absent mindedly tapped boxes one
[25:35] Speaker 2: at a time. Then he turned to face her through
[25:44] Speaker 2: the curtain. He asked her to tell him something about herself.
[25:52] Speaker 2: Tamara thought about it for a moment. I love sunflowers,
[26:00] Speaker 2: she said quietly. Pemshackle nodded to himself and turned back
[26:09] Speaker 2: to the shelves. This time, it only took him a
[26:14] Speaker 2: few seconds to find the right box, which she set
[26:19] Speaker 2: down on the desk. It was long and thin, with
[26:26] Speaker 2: a bright coat of lemon yellow paint. A picture of
[26:33] Speaker 2: a leaf was stamped on the lid. Tamara hesitantly stroked
[26:41] Speaker 2: the engraving with her finger. The box felt cool and
[26:48] Speaker 2: smoothed beneath her skin. Something stirred within her as she
[26:56] Speaker 2: moved to lift the lid. It was as though her
[27:02] Speaker 2: fingertips were magnets and she was being pulled towards whatever
[27:08] Speaker 2: was hidden inside this box. She lifted the lid carefully
[27:18] Speaker 2: and felt her heart beat louder as she discovered what
[27:25] Speaker 2: lay within. The Wand was smooth and made of a
[27:33] Speaker 2: dark wood that reminded her of nighttime in her favorite forehead.
[27:43] Speaker 2: As she looked at it, now she could see the
[27:47] Speaker 2: gnarled trunks of the trees she played under. She could
[27:54] Speaker 2: feel the rough bark beneath her palms, and smell the
[28:00] Speaker 2: evening missed on the leaves. She brushed the glossy wood
[28:08] Speaker 2: with her fingertips. The Wand slipped into her hand with
[28:16] Speaker 2: ease and settled into her palm like it had been
[28:21] Speaker 2: made just for her. The handle bursted deep engravings that
[28:32] Speaker 2: curled around it like vines. Tamara ran a thumb over them.
[28:42] Speaker 2: The wand was absolutely perfect. With a twinkle in his eye,
[28:52] Speaker 2: Pemshackle nodded to her. She lifted her hand and gave
[29:00] Speaker 2: save the wand a slight wave. A river of warmth
[29:07] Speaker 2: traveled up her arm like sun kissed honey. It filled
[29:15] Speaker 2: her with a sense of belonging, as though she and
[29:20] Speaker 2: this wand were puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly. As
[29:30] Speaker 2: the woman, the boy, and Pemshackle watched the air around
[29:37] Speaker 2: Tamara seemed to come alive. Waves of golden sparkles swirled
[29:47] Speaker 2: about her like a shining mist. She beamed with joy,
[29:56] Speaker 2: knowing deep in her heart that she had finally found
[30:02] Speaker 2: her wand. She gripped her wand tightly and grinned at Pemshackle.
[30:13] Speaker 2: He laughed and returned her smile. Watching Tamara reminded the
[30:22] Speaker 2: woman in the purple hat of when she got her
[30:27] Speaker 2: wand all those years ago. Holding it in her hand
[30:33] Speaker 2: had made her feel like the world made sense for
[30:38] Speaker 2: the very fast time. She smiled as the happy memory
[30:47] Speaker 2: flickered through her mind. The boy grinned beside her, holding
[30:56] Speaker 2: his wand a little more proudly. They'd both found what
[31:02] Speaker 2: they were looking for today. A moment later, the golden
[31:10] Speaker 2: glow around Tamara subsided. She placed the wand bag in
[31:18] Speaker 2: the lemon yellow box with care and tucked it under
[31:23] Speaker 2: her arm. It was definitely the wand she'd be taking
[31:31] Speaker 2: home tonight to show to her mother. Pemshackle handed Tomara
[31:41] Speaker 2: a soft cloth bag to protect her wand box. She
[31:49] Speaker 2: slipped the wood inside and held it close. She thanked
[31:58] Speaker 2: Pemshackle for all his help, and then turned and headed
[32:04] Speaker 2: for the door. As her hand touched the smooth metal handle,
[32:15] Speaker 2: she felt a little older than when she'd first entered
[32:20] Speaker 2: the shop. Tamara smiled. She was on her way to
[32:29] Speaker 2: becoming a wizard. With that thought, she stepped outside and
[32:40] Speaker 2: onto the cobbled path leading home.
[33:06] Speaker 1: The
