[0:27] Speaker 1: is Tom, and I'm so glad you're here for story time.
[0:32] Speaker 1: On this occasion, Eric will be reading to us. He's
[0:37] Speaker 1: read us a couple of other stories on the show before,
[0:41] Speaker 1: and this one is sure to be just as fun.
[0:46] Speaker 1: It takes place in a dry, rocky desert and is
[0:50] Speaker 1: all about a little lizard who doesn't feel tired enough
[0:54] Speaker 1: to go to bed, but he goes on a fun
[0:58] Speaker 1: adventure that eventually helps him drift off. Maybe you're settling
[1:06] Speaker 1: into bed yourself, but you might not feel quite tired
[1:10] Speaker 1: enough to fall asleep just yet. Well, you can follow
[1:15] Speaker 1: our lizard friend Leon on his journey and drift into
[1:20] Speaker 1: the land of dreams just like he eventually does. So
[1:28] Speaker 1: stretch out your arms and legs, wiggle around a little
[1:34] Speaker 1: to get nice and comfy, and now we can hear
[1:41] Speaker 1: our story, which begins in a dry and dusty desert
[1:47] Speaker 1: where Leon the lizard can be found.
[2:04] Speaker 2: In a far away land, there is a great, wide,
[2:08] Speaker 2: dusty desert. The sand is golden and hot. It rises
[2:14] Speaker 2: in great big hills and makes huge flat plains in
[2:21] Speaker 2: one corner. It is covered in orange and yellow boulders
[2:25] Speaker 2: that are all different shapes and sizes. Some are rough
[2:31] Speaker 2: and some are smooth, Some are flat and wide, others
[2:37] Speaker 2: are tall and round, and still more are jagged and crinkly.
[2:45] Speaker 2: There are many types of plants in this desert. There
[2:49] Speaker 2: are squishy succulents that grow on the ground, and there
[2:53] Speaker 2: are pale green bushes that grow in between the boulders.
[3:00] Speaker 2: They have small pointed leaves and dry, twisted stalks that
[3:05] Speaker 2: grow out of the sandy ground. And underneath these bushes
[3:10] Speaker 2: is where the lizards live. In the sand you see,
[3:15] Speaker 2: this desert is home to hundreds and thousands of lizards.
[3:21] Speaker 2: They are pale, sandy brown so they can blend in
[3:25] Speaker 2: with their home. They have rough, scaly bodies and white underbellies.
[3:33] Speaker 2: They have little horns on their faces and deep yellow eyes.
[3:39] Speaker 2: In the evening they rest under the cover of the
[3:43] Speaker 2: sand and bushes, and in the morning they crawl out
[3:47] Speaker 2: onto the rocks and lie in the sun until it
[3:51] Speaker 2: heats up their bodies and gives them energy for the day.
[3:56] Speaker 2: Then when the sun goes down, the lizards must go
[4:00] Speaker 2: to bed. One evening, when all the lizards were getting
[4:06] Speaker 2: ready to sleep, there was one little lizard who just
[4:10] Speaker 2: didn't feel tired. His name was Leon, and he was
[4:16] Speaker 2: the youngest of all of his brothers and sisters. Every
[4:21] Speaker 2: time he tried to lie down with them, his tail
[4:25] Speaker 2: would wiggle and his feet would paddle, and he'd just
[4:29] Speaker 2: have to move. All his brothers and sisters moaned and complained.
[4:37] Speaker 2: Why couldn't Leon just stay still. Leon felt bad for
[4:43] Speaker 2: keeping his brothers and sisters awake, so he crawled out
[4:47] Speaker 2: of the sand. He looked around. The sun was sinking
[4:54] Speaker 2: low in the sky, turning the rocks and the ground
[4:58] Speaker 2: pinky orange. The shadows of the bushes and boulders were
[5:04] Speaker 2: long and dark, and Leon knew that he didn't have
[5:08] Speaker 2: much time. Then he spotted a shiny black beetle crawling
[5:15] Speaker 2: quickly over one of the boulders. He watched it for
[5:19] Speaker 2: a moment, then he saw another beetle appear. It chased
[5:26] Speaker 2: the first beetle all over the rock, like they were
[5:29] Speaker 2: playing a game. Leon had an idea. Maybe if he
[5:36] Speaker 2: ran around and played a bit he would tire himself
[5:39] Speaker 2: out and he'd get to sleep. So Leon scurried as
[5:45] Speaker 2: fast as he could to the beetles and asked to
[5:48] Speaker 2: play with them. The beatles giggled happily and told him
[5:53] Speaker 2: that they were playing catch, so Leon joined in. He
[5:59] Speaker 2: leaped and ran and scurried all over the rocks and boulders.
[6:04] Speaker 2: He felt the stone beneath his feet becoming cooler and
[6:08] Speaker 2: cooler as the heat of the day left it. He
[6:13] Speaker 2: saw the sunrise bouncing off the shiny backs of the beetles.
[6:18] Speaker 2: He smelled the strange, earthy smell of night coming, but
[6:22] Speaker 2: he didn't feel tired at all. He somersaulted and jumped.
[6:29] Speaker 2: The beetles were good at playing catch. He lost as
[6:33] Speaker 2: many games as he won. But soon their little beetle
[6:37] Speaker 2: legs got tired and they had to crawl into a
[6:41] Speaker 2: crack in the rock to sleep. But Leon still didn't
[6:46] Speaker 2: feel tired at all. Actually, he felt even more alive
[6:52] Speaker 2: and full of energy. So Leon kept moving over the
[6:57] Speaker 2: boulders he scurried. He wondered to himself if there was
[7:03] Speaker 2: another way to make himself feel tired. He was thinking
[7:09] Speaker 2: so hard that he forgot to look where he was going,
[7:13] Speaker 2: he lost his footing and fell off the side of
[7:16] Speaker 2: his boulder. He was turning in mid air when he
[7:22] Speaker 2: saw the biggest, spongiest looking succulent he'd ever seen. It
[7:28] Speaker 2: looked like a big, pale green pillow. He breathed out
[7:34] Speaker 2: a sigh of relief. He was going to be okay.
[7:41] Speaker 2: But then his body landed on the succulent and he
[7:44] Speaker 2: realized that it wasn't soft and spongy at all. It
[7:49] Speaker 2: was like a rubber ball. He bounced right back up again,
[7:55] Speaker 2: as if he had landed on a great big trampoline.
[8:01] Speaker 2: He shot up through the air and then fell back
[8:04] Speaker 2: down again. This time, when his feet touched the succulent,
[8:09] Speaker 2: he bent his knees and he bounced right back up again,
[8:14] Speaker 2: giggling happily. Leon bounced and bounced a few times on
[8:20] Speaker 2: the succulent. He thought that this would definitely make him
[8:24] Speaker 2: feel sleepy, but after a while he wanted to stop bouncing,
[8:32] Speaker 2: so Leon stopped bouncing on the succulent and scurried onto
[8:36] Speaker 2: a nearby boulder. Panting, he looked around. It was definitely
[8:43] Speaker 2: nighttime now he could see the stars up above him.
[8:50] Speaker 2: He was glad not to be bouncing, but he didn't
[8:53] Speaker 2: feel tired at all. Still, it wasn't wise to be
[8:59] Speaker 2: out late, so slowly he made his way back home.
[9:06] Speaker 2: When he got there, he found all his brothers and
[9:10] Speaker 2: sisters sound asleep. He wriggled in next to them and
[9:15] Speaker 2: wondered how he could fall asleep too. Then he remembered something.
[9:23] Speaker 2: When his dad couldn't sleep, he would close his eyes
[9:27] Speaker 2: and imagine ants and count them. Leon closed his eyes
[9:33] Speaker 2: and began to imagine ants. First he imagined one ant,
[9:41] Speaker 2: then he imagined two ants. Then he imagined three ants.
[9:47] Speaker 2: Then he imagined four ants. But this time he also
[9:53] Speaker 2: imagined they were training to be in the circus. They
[9:57] Speaker 2: were jumping through little hoops. Then a fifth aunt joined
[10:02] Speaker 2: them and started playing a tiny drum. Then more ants
[10:08] Speaker 2: came to play the trumpet and the guitar. Soon there
[10:14] Speaker 2: was a whole audience of ants watching the circus ants
[10:18] Speaker 2: play music and jump through hoops. Leon opened his eyes.
[10:26] Speaker 2: It was no use. He hadn't counted the ants at all.
[10:32] Speaker 2: He'd just made a big story for them That made
[10:35] Speaker 2: him feel even more awake. Leon sighed a big sigh.
[10:43] Speaker 2: Perhaps he just wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. But
[10:48] Speaker 2: then Leon's mother woke up. She looked lovingly at all
[10:53] Speaker 2: her little lizards snuggled in around her, and she saw
[10:59] Speaker 2: Leon while i'd awake. She crawled over to him and
[11:04] Speaker 2: kissed him on his head. Leon told her all about
[11:08] Speaker 2: trying to get to sleep and how it wasn't working,
[11:13] Speaker 2: but she just patted him on the back and smiled.
[11:18] Speaker 2: She told Leon to lie down, get comfortable, and close
[11:22] Speaker 2: his eyes. Leon wriggled into a good position and closed
[11:28] Speaker 2: his eyes. Then his mother told him to take a deep,
[11:34] Speaker 2: slow breath in. Leon did what he was told. The
[11:42] Speaker 2: cool desert air filled his lungs, and he realized how
[11:47] Speaker 2: warm he felt inside. The cooling breath felt so soothing
[11:53] Speaker 2: and relaxing. He breathed out happily. Leon's mother told him
[12:01] Speaker 2: to think about the tip of his tail. As soon
[12:06] Speaker 2: as she said it, he felt his tail warm and scaly.
[12:11] Speaker 2: Lying on the cool, sandy ground, The ground felt so
[12:17] Speaker 2: calming and safe. He felt his tail give one little
[12:22] Speaker 2: twitch and then relax. It was as if every part
[12:27] Speaker 2: of it had decided to become soft and sleepy. Leon
[12:33] Speaker 2: gave a little yawn. Then his mother told him to
[12:39] Speaker 2: feel his belly. Leon felt it warm and riggily against
[12:45] Speaker 2: the cool ground. But then he felt his breath making
[12:51] Speaker 2: it balloon in and out, just like how his tail relaxed.
[12:57] Speaker 2: Leon's belly relaxed too. It suddenly felt so good to
[13:04] Speaker 2: be lying against the cool, sandy ground. Then his mother
[13:11] Speaker 2: told him to think about his arms and legs and
[13:14] Speaker 2: his little claws. Leon thought about them and realized how
[13:20] Speaker 2: tired they felt. They had carried him all day and
[13:26] Speaker 2: all evening over the boulders and the sand. They had
[13:31] Speaker 2: bounced with him on the succulent and high into the air.
[13:37] Speaker 2: They were exhausted. He felt them quiver and relax, just
[13:43] Speaker 2: like his tail and belly had done. Then his mother
[13:49] Speaker 2: told him to think about his head and his eyes
[13:53] Speaker 2: and the tip of his tongue. Leon thought about how
[13:58] Speaker 2: much thinking his head had done, and how tired it
[14:01] Speaker 2: felt now. Then he thought about his eyes and all
[14:08] Speaker 2: they had seen, how tired they were now. So he
[14:14] Speaker 2: let them relax, just like he let his tail and
[14:18] Speaker 2: his belly and his arms and legs relax. Then his
[14:26] Speaker 2: mother told him something else, but whatever it was, Leon
[14:31] Speaker 2: didn't remember, or perhaps he just didn't hear it. He
[14:37] Speaker 2: was so relaxed and so tired that he simply slipped
[14:42] Speaker 2: into his dreams. The mother lizard smiled as she watched
[14:48] Speaker 2: her littless lizard sighs softly and joined his other brothers
[14:54] Speaker 2: and sisters as they slumbered. Closed her eyes and felt
[15:01] Speaker 2: the cool ground beneath her, heard the sound of her
[15:06] Speaker 2: children around, and smelled the earthy smell of night. She
[15:15] Speaker 2: took a long, flowing breath in and felt herself drift
[15:21] Speaker 2: softly into the sweetest, deepest.
[15:24] Speaker 3: Sleeping more moans using a moment
