[0:27] Speaker 1: is Tom and it's my pleasure to have you join
[0:30] Speaker 1: me here for story time. I'm excited to listen along
[0:35] Speaker 1: with you for this one as our friend Elizabeth reads
[0:39] Speaker 1: our story. It's winter time where I live right now
[0:44] Speaker 1: here in England, and on a lot of the days
[0:47] Speaker 1: at the moment, it's really cold, but I love enjoying
[0:53] Speaker 1: the colder weather and wrapping up in warm jumpers and
[0:57] Speaker 1: thick coats when I go outside. But did you know
[1:03] Speaker 1: there are some places where it doesn't usually snow. Tonight's
[1:09] Speaker 1: story is about a little girl in one of these
[1:12] Speaker 1: warmer parts of the world, but she and her playful
[1:17] Speaker 1: puppy are in for a very special winter treat. So
[1:24] Speaker 1: let's take a nice deep breath together to prepare our
[1:28] Speaker 1: imaginations for the story. Breathing slowly, filling your belly all
[1:37] Speaker 1: the way up, and then just as slowly let the
[1:43] Speaker 1: air back out, noticing how your belly falls back down lovely,
[1:52] Speaker 1: So let's begin our story now as we join Alba
[1:58] Speaker 1: in her bedroom at.
[2:00] Speaker 2: Albert's bedroom was pure white. The ceiling, the floor, and
[2:19] Speaker 2: everything in between was the same color as milk. The
[2:26] Speaker 2: little girl loved color, but she dreamt of a world
[2:31] Speaker 2: of snow. She'd never seen it before. Where she lived,
[2:39] Speaker 2: it was always warm, despite the never ending summer outside.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Most of her dolls wore mittens and caps because it
[2:53] Speaker 2: was always snowing in Alba's world, imagined being surrounded by
[3:02] Speaker 2: a pure, glistening landscape while frozen crystals descended from the sky.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Although she'd never witnessed a snowfall, she'd seen it in
[3:19] Speaker 2: videos enough to recreate the magical phenomenon. In her bedroom,
[3:29] Speaker 2: she cut snowflakes from paper, but these didn't melt. She
[3:37] Speaker 2: used the feathers in her pillow that these weren't cold,
[3:44] Speaker 2: and sometimes she would sneak into the kitchen and check
[3:49] Speaker 2: inside the freezer. Though ice cubes were cold, they looked
[3:56] Speaker 2: nothing like snowflakes, and they couldn't down in the sky.
[4:04] Speaker 2: On her sixth birthday, Alba was gifted a dog. It
[4:11] Speaker 2: was furry, white and cuddly with big puppy eyes. The
[4:22] Speaker 2: moment she saw it, Alba knew this was her new
[4:27] Speaker 2: best friend. She named him Tundra. From now on, she
[4:37] Speaker 2: would take him on her imaginary winter adventures. Every day
[4:47] Speaker 2: after school, Alba came home excited as she stepped into
[4:54] Speaker 2: her house. She left the arid climate outdoors, with its
[5:01] Speaker 2: dry soil and high temperatures, and entered the imaginary snow
[5:09] Speaker 2: kingdom in her room. Together with Tundra, she lived in
[5:18] Speaker 2: a winter wonderland. Sometimes they used cotton balls to create
[5:24] Speaker 2: snow people. Other times they painted trees with branches covered
[5:32] Speaker 2: in frost. And after all the fun, they crawled under
[5:40] Speaker 2: the bed, pretending they were tucked away in a warm cabin. Tundra,
[5:51] Speaker 2: being a trusty and watchful pup, always kept an eye
[5:57] Speaker 2: out for blizzards coming over the sea, now capped mountains,
[6:03] Speaker 2: or hungry bears looking for a snack. At least that's
[6:10] Speaker 2: what Alba thought when he'd bark at a bird just
[6:14] Speaker 2: outside the window. Pundra was a great listener. He would
[6:23] Speaker 2: cuddle up in bed with Alba while she read from
[6:27] Speaker 2: picture books, whether they were about winter or not. Listening
[6:34] Speaker 2: to her read, he would always yawn and close his
[6:40] Speaker 2: big brown eyes. Then his breathing would soften his tail
[6:51] Speaker 2: would stop wiggling, and soon he'd drift off to doggy dreamland.
[7:00] Speaker 2: She'd wore as he slept peacefully, and pet him gently
[7:06] Speaker 2: on their head. She always wondered what puppies dreamt about.
[7:18] Speaker 2: Albert often begged her parents to take her to the
[7:22] Speaker 2: snowy mountains or to a country covered in ice. She
[7:30] Speaker 2: wanted to touch the snow, make a snow man, and
[7:36] Speaker 2: catch a snowflake on her tongue, but these kinds of
[7:41] Speaker 2: wintry places were very far away. Every night. She wished
[7:50] Speaker 2: to visit a real winter wonderland some day, but so
[7:56] Speaker 2: far her wishes had never been granted. Her persistence paid off,
[8:04] Speaker 2: though this particular knife was special. As the sleepy girl
[8:12] Speaker 2: made her wish, a bright star fell from the sky.
[8:24] Speaker 2: When she opened her eyes. The next morning, her room
[8:29] Speaker 2: had a different kind of brightness. It wasn't the warm
[8:36] Speaker 2: sunlight she was used to. Alba called out to Tundra,
[8:42] Speaker 2: who was looking out the window. As he turned to
[8:47] Speaker 2: greet her, he leaped with joy, darting back and forth
[8:55] Speaker 2: between the bed and the window. Curious about what was
[9:02] Speaker 2: going on, Alba pushed her covers aside and walked towards
[9:09] Speaker 2: the window. Through the crack between her curtains, she saw
[9:17] Speaker 2: big white flakes falling from the sky like confetti. She
[9:26] Speaker 2: gasped and pulled the curtains open. Outside it was snowing.
[9:38] Speaker 2: She couldn't believe it. For a few minutes, Alba just
[9:43] Speaker 2: watched the snow fall. The longer she looked, the happier
[9:51] Speaker 2: she felt. Tundra was mesmerized as well. The pup had
[9:58] Speaker 2: never seen snow eyes. Alba looked up to the sky,
[10:06] Speaker 2: trying to watch a single snowflake on its path down.
[10:13] Speaker 2: In her mind, each bright crystal was on a journey.
[10:19] Speaker 2: She imagined that this journey started with a cloud shedding
[10:25] Speaker 2: its snowflakes like a tree shedding its autumn leaves. In
[10:33] Speaker 2: the air, the snowflakes learned how to twirl and dance,
[10:40] Speaker 2: and then once they learned these lessons, they'd drift down
[10:46] Speaker 2: and reunite with all the other dancing snowflakes on the ground.
[10:54] Speaker 2: While she was asleep, millions of snowflakes had completed their journey.
[11:04] Speaker 2: A thin, delicate powder covered the neighborhood roofs, trees, roads,
[11:13] Speaker 2: and sidewalks. The fresh layer of snow glistened in the
[11:20] Speaker 2: pale morning sun. Tundra started running back and forth. He'd
[11:30] Speaker 2: had enough of watching. Alba shared his enthusiasm. She knew
[11:37] Speaker 2: that before going outside, there was one last thing they
[11:43] Speaker 2: had to do, get dressed for the chilly weather. She
[11:52] Speaker 2: found an old green sweater for Tundra. After a few adjustments,
[11:59] Speaker 2: the part looked quite fond of his new winter outfit.
[12:07] Speaker 2: Now it was Alba's turn. A pair of gloves and
[12:13] Speaker 2: a knitted cap would have been wonderful, but only her
[12:19] Speaker 2: dolls were prepared for this kind of weather. All of
[12:24] Speaker 2: the clothes in her closet were meant to keep her
[12:28] Speaker 2: cool instead of warm. There were no thick coats or
[12:35] Speaker 2: fluffy scarves. As she sighed, not knowing what to do,
[12:42] Speaker 2: she heard a familiar knock on the door. Her parents
[12:49] Speaker 2: opened the door and caught a glimpse of Tundra in
[12:53] Speaker 2: his green sweater. You must have looked outside, Alba's mom said,
[13:01] Speaker 2: with a grin. The little girl giggled, Her eyes sparkled
[13:08] Speaker 2: brighter than the snow. Her dad pulled a package out
[13:15] Speaker 2: from behind his back. Alba unwrapped it eagerly and found
[13:22] Speaker 2: a thick, warm jacket, a pair of glass and a
[13:28] Speaker 2: matching knitted cap all in her favorite color. She hugged
[13:36] Speaker 2: her parents with delight. Now she was ready to play
[13:42] Speaker 2: in the snow. When she opened the door to the backyard,
[13:51] Speaker 2: the dog sprinted past her. He jumped right in the
[13:57] Speaker 2: snow without a moment's At first, he didn't really know
[14:04] Speaker 2: what to do. He took a big mouthful and chewedd
[14:11] Speaker 2: but that didn't seem right. He resorted to rolling around
[14:17] Speaker 2: in mounds of snow. Albert smiled at her puppies joy
[14:26] Speaker 2: and walked outside. The crisp air pinched her face gently.
[14:36] Speaker 2: She'd always been curious about what the air felt like
[14:40] Speaker 2: when it snowed. Now she was experiencing it fully. She
[14:49] Speaker 2: noticed the change in her breath first. No matter if
[14:55] Speaker 2: she inhaled through her nose or her mouth, each breath
[15:00] Speaker 2: felt fresh like mint, but each breath found was warm
[15:07] Speaker 2: and white, like the lazy steam of an old locomotive.
[15:16] Speaker 2: Tundra's breath formed little clouds as he happily inspected the
[15:22] Speaker 2: snow covered backyard. Alba giggled. She felt like a powerful giant.
[15:32] Speaker 2: Whenever the snow crunched under the pressure of her boots.
[15:38] Speaker 2: Twas a funny sound that wasn't captured in picture books.
[15:45] Speaker 2: Every step left a clear print in the snow, with
[15:50] Speaker 2: the shape of her foot and the lines of her
[15:54] Speaker 2: shoes crossing in between. She looked at the footprints for
[16:02] Speaker 2: a while. Minutes ago, the layer of snow was untouched.
[16:09] Speaker 2: Now there was a trail forming behind her. The new
[16:18] Speaker 2: gloves were warm and soft, but Albert knew that she
[16:24] Speaker 2: needed to feel the snow on her bare hands. She
[16:30] Speaker 2: took off her gloves and stuffed them inside the pockets
[16:35] Speaker 2: of her jacket. Then she closed her eyes, stretched out
[16:43] Speaker 2: her palms towards the sky, and stood as still as
[16:50] Speaker 2: she possibly could. She felt the touch of every delicate
[17:00] Speaker 2: flake that landed on her hands. Each was cool, just
[17:07] Speaker 2: for an instant, and then it would melt and fade away,
[17:13] Speaker 2: only to be replaced by another. While Alba stood still,
[17:21] Speaker 2: the dog tried to catch some of the flying crystals
[17:26] Speaker 2: in mid air. He ran back and forth after the
[17:33] Speaker 2: biggest flakes, but he found snowflakes a bit confusing. They
[17:40] Speaker 2: would disappear the second that he caught them. He returned
[17:46] Speaker 2: to sniffing around in piles of snow. As curious as ever,
[17:55] Speaker 2: Alba wandered over to a small wooden bench where snow
[18:01] Speaker 2: had piled up on the sea. She ran her finger
[18:07] Speaker 2: along the edge. It was soft, cold, and wet at
[18:14] Speaker 2: the same time. Looking at it up clothes, she could
[18:20] Speaker 2: see the shapes of so many crystals. Every snowflake is unique,
[18:30] Speaker 2: she said, with wonder in her eyes. With a bark,
[18:37] Speaker 2: thunders seemed to approve. After playing with snow for a
[18:44] Speaker 2: few minutes, Alba's fingers began to turn red and feel
[18:50] Speaker 2: slightly numb. She put her warm gloves back on and
[18:57] Speaker 2: began to scoop snow with both hands. She took two
[19:03] Speaker 2: handfuls and pressed her palms together, creating a compact little ball.
[19:12] Speaker 2: How funny that they float down individually but stick together
[19:18] Speaker 2: once they land, Alba thought, with a few snowballs ready,
[19:26] Speaker 2: she tossed them playfully towards the dog with a leap.
[19:33] Speaker 2: He tried to catch them in his mouth. Negt Alba
[19:40] Speaker 2: found an untouched patch of snow without any imprints from
[19:45] Speaker 2: boots or paws. She lay down flat on her back,
[19:54] Speaker 2: curious about what was going on. Thundra started licking her cheek.
[20:00] Speaker 2: It was cute, wet, and quite unexpected. Alba's cheerful laughter
[20:09] Speaker 2: danced through the air with the falling snow. When the
[20:16] Speaker 2: dog finally got distracted, Alba spread her arms and swung
[20:23] Speaker 2: them up and down a couple of times. Then she
[20:29] Speaker 2: stood up slowly, careful not to disturb the snow. Her
[20:37] Speaker 2: first snow angel was beautiful, despite a few pawprints around
[20:44] Speaker 2: the outside. Alba and Tundra spent the entire day trying
[20:53] Speaker 2: new things in their winter wonderland. Time flew by, but
[21:01] Speaker 2: to the little girl and her pub it was frozen
[21:06] Speaker 2: like the snow they played in. They built a snowman
[21:12] Speaker 2: and a snow woman. They stamped out a path to
[21:17] Speaker 2: form a spiral mane, and even started a snow castle. Eventually,
[21:27] Speaker 2: the sun began to set it was time to go
[21:32] Speaker 2: back inside. Alba stomped her feet in front of the
[21:39] Speaker 2: house to get the snow off her boots. When her
[21:44] Speaker 2: mom called for her twice, she quickly cleaned up and
[21:49] Speaker 2: opened the door to the kitchen carefully. It wasn't until
[21:56] Speaker 2: she entered the warmth of her home that she realized
[22:00] Speaker 2: she couldn't feel her nose. After thawing for a moment,
[22:07] Speaker 2: her nose detected the finest of smells, freshly baked cookies.
[22:17] Speaker 2: Alba sat down at the dinner table. She told her
[22:22] Speaker 2: parents all about the snow, the games you could play
[22:28] Speaker 2: in it, the differences between snowflakes, and how to make
[22:34] Speaker 2: a snow angel. It was different than all those evenings
[22:41] Speaker 2: she played in her room. Snow was better than she'd
[22:46] Speaker 2: ever dreamed it would be. After a warm meal, Alba's
[22:55] Speaker 2: mom brought out the freshly baked cookies. They were warm
[23:01] Speaker 2: and soft. Albert took one in both hands and bent
[23:08] Speaker 2: it in half, watching as bits of melted chocolate dripped
[23:14] Speaker 2: down the edges. Tundra watched longingly. He too, deserved a
[23:23] Speaker 2: treat after such a wonderful day, so Alba finished her
[23:31] Speaker 2: cookie and fed her up a dog treat, which she
[23:36] Speaker 2: gobbled up in the blink of an eye. Alba climbed
[23:44] Speaker 2: the stairs up to her room. Only now did the
[23:48] Speaker 2: excitement of the day warof She was awfully tired. A
[23:56] Speaker 2: sleepy Tundra followed her sluggish up the stairs. She changed
[24:05] Speaker 2: into fresh, warm clothes and realized that one of the
[24:11] Speaker 2: best things about being out in the snow is warming
[24:16] Speaker 2: yourself up again. She went to the window and looked outside.
[24:26] Speaker 2: The day had turned to night. Street lights shone in
[24:32] Speaker 2: a bright yellow, reflecting off the powdery white ground. It
[24:39] Speaker 2: was still snowing. The trails along the sidewalks disappeared as
[24:48] Speaker 2: fresh snow fell. Layer by layer. The new snowflakes were
[24:56] Speaker 2: reunited with those on the ground they had completed their journey.
[25:05] Speaker 2: The sea of snow seemed to twinkle brighter in the
[25:10] Speaker 2: darkness of the night. No wonder they shine their shape
[25:17] Speaker 2: like tiny stars. Alberthorpe. She crawled into bed, where Tundra
[25:27] Speaker 2: had already found his usual spot. He looked exhausted after
[25:34] Speaker 2: all the fun they had had outside. She covered him
[25:40] Speaker 2: up with her blanket and pulled out her favorite picture book.
[25:49] Speaker 2: She flipped through the pages full of winter wonderlands that
[25:55] Speaker 2: looked just like the one right outside her bedroom window.
[26:03] Speaker 2: After a long yawn, Albert put the picture book aside
[26:09] Speaker 2: and snuggled down into her bed. When he felt her move,
[26:17] Speaker 2: Tundra opened his eyes halfway. He crawled closer to the
[26:25] Speaker 2: little girl until his nose touched hers, and together they
[26:35] Speaker 2: drifted comfortably to sleep.
