[0:27] Speaker 1: my name is Tom, and I'm so glad you're here
[0:30] Speaker 1: for story time. Whether it's for a nap, for bed,
[0:35] Speaker 1: or just for fun. Story time is my favorite part
[0:39] Speaker 1: of the day, especially when friends like you are here
[0:43] Speaker 1: to join me. I can't wait to read this story
[0:47] Speaker 1: to you because I know you're going to love it.
[0:52] Speaker 1: It's about a little girl called Nelly who goes on
[0:56] Speaker 1: a small but sweet adventure through the countryside with her grandma,
[1:02] Speaker 1: who she calls Nanny. They have to get ready for
[1:07] Speaker 1: some very special, rather unique guests. So let's get ourselves
[1:15] Speaker 1: ready to listen by relaxing our bodies and opening up
[1:21] Speaker 1: our imaginations. First, take a big breath in and stretch
[1:30] Speaker 1: out your arms and legs. Then breathe the air back out,
[1:38] Speaker 1: letting your arms and legs relax once more. You might
[1:45] Speaker 1: want to repeat that again, which you can do in
[1:49] Speaker 1: your own time, or you may already feel perfectly comfortable
[1:55] Speaker 1: and ready to listen. With that being said, I think
[2:02] Speaker 1: it's time we start our story, so let's join Nanny
[2:08] Speaker 1: and Nellie on their special day. In a small town
[2:30] Speaker 1: in the British countryside, there lived a little girl called
[2:36] Speaker 1: Nelly and her grandmother, Nanny. Nellie had long brown hair
[2:45] Speaker 1: that she tied in plats, and she loved everything about
[2:51] Speaker 1: where she lived. She loved the peaceful fields, the fresh,
[2:58] Speaker 1: clean air, and the chirruping birds. She loved it in
[3:05] Speaker 1: the summer when everything was green and bright, and in
[3:11] Speaker 1: the winter when everything was silver and mysterious. But her
[3:19] Speaker 1: favorite time was the early autumn, when the leaves were
[3:24] Speaker 1: just beginning to fall and the air was cold, but
[3:29] Speaker 1: the sunlight was still warm and golden. It was on
[3:36] Speaker 1: a morning exactly like this that Nellie woke up and
[3:42] Speaker 1: went downstairs to find Nanny, who was looking a little worried.
[3:50] Speaker 1: Nanny was washing the dishes and wearing her favorite fluffy,
[3:55] Speaker 1: purple dressing gown that went nicely with her snow white hair,
[4:02] Speaker 1: but she seemed to have forgotten that she had already
[4:06] Speaker 1: washed the dishes last night. Nellie took a seat at
[4:13] Speaker 1: the kitchen table and asked what was wrong. Nanny turned
[4:20] Speaker 1: around and explained that she felt like she had forgotten
[4:25] Speaker 1: something important. Nellie tried to think it was the weekend,
[4:33] Speaker 1: so she didn't need to go to school. They'd already
[4:38] Speaker 1: done the laundry and fed the cat. There was only
[4:43] Speaker 1: one way to find out. Nellie opened up the kitchen
[4:50] Speaker 1: drawers and brought out nanny's diary. Nanny flicked through it carefully.
[5:00] Speaker 1: When she stopped on the day's date, she gave a
[5:03] Speaker 1: little gasp. That afternoon the cows were coming for crumble.
[5:15] Speaker 1: Before Nellie could ask anything about it, Nanny was opening
[5:20] Speaker 1: and closing her cupboards, searching high and low for something,
[5:27] Speaker 1: but each time she shook her head. Nellie watched sleepily
[5:36] Speaker 1: until Nanny stopped and announced that today they had to
[5:41] Speaker 1: go on a mini adventure and they must wear their
[5:46] Speaker 1: Wellington boots. Nellie loved adventures, so she didn't complain at all.
[5:57] Speaker 1: She hurried upstairs to put on her hungarease and brush
[6:02] Speaker 1: her teeth. When she was done, she hopped and skipped
[6:08] Speaker 1: downstairs to the front door, where Nanny was waiting in
[6:13] Speaker 1: an elegant cream colored rain jacket. Together, they sat on
[6:21] Speaker 1: the bottom step, feeling the bobbly carpet beneath them, and
[6:27] Speaker 1: pulled on their wellies. The feeling of the cool, stiff
[6:33] Speaker 1: rubber filled Nelly with excitement. Then Nanny helped Nelly into
[6:41] Speaker 1: her banana yellow raincoat that squeaked a little bit when
[6:46] Speaker 1: she put the hood up. Nanny picked up her big
[6:52] Speaker 1: woven shopping basket that had been made out of willow
[6:57] Speaker 1: twigs and opened the door. The cool, crisp morning breeze
[7:06] Speaker 1: ruffled their hair. They stepped out into the day. The
[7:14] Speaker 1: sky was dotted with low, gray and white clouds, but
[7:21] Speaker 1: here and there the sun still peeped through. The leaves
[7:26] Speaker 1: on the trees were orange and yellow like fireworks, and
[7:33] Speaker 1: there was a faint scent of wood smoke in the air.
[7:38] Speaker 1: Nelly smiled as she took it all in. Nanny started
[7:46] Speaker 1: to walk up the lane. Nelly followed behind her wellies,
[7:53] Speaker 1: clip clopped against the cobblestone street. Nanny led them through
[8:01] Speaker 1: the town and to the wooden gate that opened onto
[8:05] Speaker 1: the fields. It creaked and squeaked as they pushed it open.
[8:15] Speaker 1: They stepped out onto the field. The grass felt springy
[8:21] Speaker 1: and squishy because it had rained the night before here,
[8:27] Speaker 1: and there were puddles of mud and water. Nellie smiled
[8:35] Speaker 1: as she stumped through them, feeling the cold of the
[8:39] Speaker 1: mud through her boots. They trudged across the field, past
[8:47] Speaker 1: the path and benches, and down the hill to where
[8:52] Speaker 1: the river flowed. There on the edge were great, big
[9:00] Speaker 1: BlackBerry bushes. Nelly looked up at them and smiled. Every
[9:09] Speaker 1: bush was full of juicy, ripe blackberries. Nanny looked at
[9:17] Speaker 1: Nellie with a glimmer in her eyes and reminded her
[9:23] Speaker 1: the cows were coming for crumble. Together, they reached out
[9:30] Speaker 1: their arms and started to pluck blackberries from the bushes.
[9:37] Speaker 1: Nellie liked feeling the small, bumpy fruit in between her
[9:42] Speaker 1: fingers before she picked them. Nanny held out her basket.
[9:51] Speaker 1: Inside was a big plastic container that they dropped each
[9:56] Speaker 1: BlackBerry into. They laughed and talked as they picked blackberries,
[10:05] Speaker 1: and finally, when the container was full, they closed the
[10:10] Speaker 1: lid and carried on walking. Nellie thought they might be
[10:18] Speaker 1: going home, but Nanny had other ideas. She walked them
[10:24] Speaker 1: to the end of the field and through a small
[10:29] Speaker 1: metal gate. They stepped out on to the tiny lane
[10:35] Speaker 1: that Nanny called the fairy lane because it was lined
[10:40] Speaker 1: with great tall trees that made a tunnel above their heads.
[10:48] Speaker 1: When the sun shone through the gaps in the leaves.
[10:52] Speaker 1: Nanny and Nellie always liked to imagine that they were fairies.
[11:01] Speaker 1: They stumped down the lane, looking up at the trees,
[11:06] Speaker 1: and stopping only when they came to the old farmhouse gate.
[11:14] Speaker 1: Nellie smiled. She loved to see the old farmhouse with
[11:20] Speaker 1: its thatched roof and cluster of chickens that always pecked
[11:25] Speaker 1: around the yard. Today, Nanny opened the gate and marched
[11:34] Speaker 1: straight in. The best thing about the old farmhouse was
[11:42] Speaker 1: its tiny shop that sold fresh eggs and other things
[11:47] Speaker 1: that were made on the farm. It was located just
[11:52] Speaker 1: behind the gate and looked like a small wooden hut.
[11:59] Speaker 1: Inside they had shelves full of lovely things, and next
[12:05] Speaker 1: to the door there was a list of all the
[12:08] Speaker 1: prices and a box for people to put their money.
[12:16] Speaker 1: Nanny selected a big brown paper bag of flour and
[12:21] Speaker 1: two blocks of creamy looking butter that were wrapped in
[12:26] Speaker 1: wax paper. She reached into her pocket and brought out
[12:33] Speaker 1: her round pass. It was made of a woven material,
[12:39] Speaker 1: a bit like a rug or a tapestry, and it
[12:44] Speaker 1: closed with two silver clasps. Nanny opened it and found
[12:52] Speaker 1: the money she needed. She handed it to Nelly to
[12:57] Speaker 1: drop into the money box. Nelly carefully slid each coin
[13:04] Speaker 1: into the slot of the box and listened to it
[13:08] Speaker 1: jangle and thunk when it hit the bottom, which was
[13:13] Speaker 1: already lined with other people's coins. Nanny smiled and placed
[13:22] Speaker 1: the butter and flower into her basket. Then, with a
[13:28] Speaker 1: gentle squeeze of Nelly's shoulder, she steered them back out
[13:34] Speaker 1: into Fairy Lane. They carried on up the lane, they
[13:43] Speaker 1: passed the old stone bridge and the stables. Nanny looked
[13:51] Speaker 1: up at the gray sky and said it looked like
[13:55] Speaker 1: rain was coming. Later after that, they walked faster, even
[14:03] Speaker 1: though their legs felt tired and heavy. Then at the
[14:10] Speaker 1: top of the lane, they took the turning onto Nanny's
[14:15] Speaker 1: street and strolled back home, but Nanny led them round
[14:23] Speaker 1: to the back of the house and into the garden.
[14:29] Speaker 1: Nanny looked confused, but she followed anyway. Nanny's garden was
[14:39] Speaker 1: long and thin. Right at the end was an old
[14:45] Speaker 1: cooking apple tree that looked like it had been there
[14:49] Speaker 1: for hundreds of years. Every autumn it grew so many big,
[14:57] Speaker 1: misshapen apples that nobody knew what to do with them.
[15:05] Speaker 1: On that day. It was so full of apples that
[15:09] Speaker 1: Nelly thought it might fall over. Nanny put down her
[15:16] Speaker 1: basket and began to pick some apples. Nellie joined her.
[15:25] Speaker 1: She reached out and felt the cool, smooth apples in
[15:30] Speaker 1: her hands. They were so large, and they smelt sweet
[15:37] Speaker 1: and floury. Together, Nanny and Nelly picked as many apples
[15:46] Speaker 1: as the basket could carry. Then they walked back to
[15:52] Speaker 1: the house. Nanny let Nelly unlock the back door, but
[15:59] Speaker 1: only after they had kicked off their wellington boots. Nellie laughed,
[16:07] Speaker 1: they were covered in thick countryside mud. They then stepped
[16:16] Speaker 1: into the kitchen. Nellie rubbed her eyes, she was sleepy
[16:24] Speaker 1: from all that walking, but Nanny waggled her finger. They
[16:31] Speaker 1: still had work to do. The cows were coming for crumble.
[16:40] Speaker 1: Nanny brought out her big mixing bowl and her special scales.
[16:48] Speaker 1: She turned on the oven and twisted the temperature knobs.
[16:54] Speaker 1: Nellie watched the warm oven light blink on. They washed
[17:01] Speaker 1: the blackberries and peeled the apples. Nanny cut them into
[17:08] Speaker 1: chunks and put everything in a great big pie dish.
[17:16] Speaker 1: Then she sprinkled the mixture with sugar. Next, they weighed
[17:25] Speaker 1: out the flour into the big mixing bowl. They plunked
[17:31] Speaker 1: in the butter and more sugar and mixed it together
[17:37] Speaker 1: until it looked just like brown bread crumbs. Nanny layered
[17:45] Speaker 1: the mixture on top of the fruit. She peered at
[17:50] Speaker 1: Nellie with a mischievous look in her eye and told
[17:55] Speaker 1: her to make a wish. Nelly closed her eyes and
[18:03] Speaker 1: wished for more adventurous days with Nanny. Then Nanny put
[18:12] Speaker 1: the crumble in the oven and sank down into her armchair.
[18:20] Speaker 1: She glanced at the clock. The cows would be here
[18:26] Speaker 1: in one hour. Nelly sat down too, but she couldn't
[18:33] Speaker 1: help but feel confused. She had never before heard of
[18:40] Speaker 1: a cow eating crumble. But the kitchen was warm, and
[18:47] Speaker 1: she was having such a good time with Nanny that
[18:51] Speaker 1: she decided not to say anything. Slowly, the crumble cooked,
[19:02] Speaker 1: the kitchen was full of the smell of blackberries and apples.
[19:09] Speaker 1: Nellie peered into the oven. The crumble was golden brown.
[19:19] Speaker 1: The oven timer pinged. Nanny put on her big puffy
[19:26] Speaker 1: ovengloves and took it out. Then she set the table
[19:34] Speaker 1: ready for their guests. But Nelly couldn't help but wonder
[19:40] Speaker 1: if their guests would come at all. Then after precisely
[19:49] Speaker 1: one hour, there was a knock at the door. Nanny
[19:56] Speaker 1: opened it up, and standing there the garden were three
[20:02] Speaker 1: beautiful cows, wearing bells around their necks. They blinked their
[20:11] Speaker 1: big brown eyes and mood hallow. Nellie jumped up happily.
[20:22] Speaker 1: The cows really had come for crumble. Together, Nanny and
[20:31] Speaker 1: Nellie served up platefuls of crumble. Everybody had second helpings
[20:40] Speaker 1: and licked their plates clean. Finally, when the last spoonful
[20:48] Speaker 1: of crumble had disappeared, the cows gave a great sigh
[20:54] Speaker 1: of thanks and lay down in the garden grass. Nelly
[21:03] Speaker 1: felt so happy and sleepy. She looked at Nanny, who
[21:11] Speaker 1: winked kindly and gently led her to the big, squashy
[21:18] Speaker 1: armchair in the front room. Nelly sank down into its
[21:26] Speaker 1: warm cushions. She was so tired and so relaxed from
[21:34] Speaker 1: her day. Nanny smiled and covered her in a soft
[21:42] Speaker 1: knitted blanket. Nelly's eyes began to droop. Nanny took a
[21:51] Speaker 1: seat in the other armchair and laid back her head.
[22:00] Speaker 1: Together they closed their tired eyes and sighed happily. It
[22:09] Speaker 1: had been a wonderful day. Slowly but Surely they drifted
[22:21] Speaker 1: off into a deep and RESTful sleep, where they dreamed
[22:27] Speaker 1: about countryside walks and fairy lanes, and most importantly, BlackBerry
[22:39] Speaker 1: and apple.
[22:41] Speaker 2: Crumble, no more lives than other. God h
