[0:26] Speaker 1: Hey friend, it's Tom. Thanks for joining me here today.
[0:32] Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you a story about Animal Town.
[0:38] Speaker 1: Do you already know about Animal Town? Some of you
[0:42] Speaker 1: may have visited it before in our story about the
[0:45] Speaker 1: Bunny Family at Home, But don't worry. If you haven't
[0:51] Speaker 1: heard that story, you can always listen to it another
[0:55] Speaker 1: day if you like. Animal Town is a lovely place,
[1:01] Speaker 1: which you'll hear all about in just a moment when
[1:05] Speaker 1: we join the Bunny family and their friends, the Squirrels,
[1:10] Speaker 1: on the day of the Town Picnic. Before we begin,
[1:17] Speaker 1: we need to get our bodies and our imaginations ready
[1:22] Speaker 1: to listen, So make sure you're nice and cozy. Then
[1:31] Speaker 1: take a big breath in through your nose, hold it
[1:37] Speaker 1: for a second or two, and then breathe back out.
[1:46] Speaker 2: Lovely.
[1:49] Speaker 1: I think we're well and truly ready to head to
[1:52] Speaker 1: Animal Town now, so close your eyes and imagine in
[2:00] Speaker 1: a sunny morning in a place full of trees. This
[2:08] Speaker 1: is where our story begins. It was a glorious morning
[2:35] Speaker 1: in Animal Town. The sun was shining with the bright
[2:40] Speaker 1: alert light of early spring. The sky looked blue and inviting,
[2:48] Speaker 1: and the air smelled fresh and clean. Now, if you
[2:56] Speaker 1: don't know it, animal Town is a lovely place that
[3:01] Speaker 1: exists in the land of imagination. There's a river that
[3:08] Speaker 1: flows next to one side of the town, and there's
[3:13] Speaker 1: a big green meadow that stretches out like a lazy
[3:18] Speaker 1: giant on the other side. All the little woodland animals
[3:26] Speaker 1: live in Animal Town inside of treehouses and cozy dens,
[3:33] Speaker 1: which are laid out neatly along quiet streets. And in
[3:40] Speaker 1: one of those cozy dens, under a big branching tree
[3:46] Speaker 1: near the edge of town, lived the Bunny family. There
[3:55] Speaker 1: were three sister bunnies and three brother bunnies who all
[4:00] Speaker 1: lived with their mother and father Bunny, as well as
[4:05] Speaker 1: their grandmother and grandfather Bunny, making ten bunnies in total,
[4:14] Speaker 1: and they all lived together in their warm den under
[4:20] Speaker 1: the big branching tree. Now, on this glorious spring morning,
[4:30] Speaker 1: the bunny family had just finished breakfast, and the six
[4:36] Speaker 1: little bunnies were ready to go outside to explore the
[4:42] Speaker 1: lovely day, so they hopped out the door of their
[4:48] Speaker 1: cozy home, and they stood by the doorstep looking around
[4:54] Speaker 1: their quiet street. The bunnies saw the light blue of
[5:02] Speaker 1: the sky with just a few white clouds drifting across it.
[5:10] Speaker 1: They breathed in the fresh, clean air. Their little bunny
[5:17] Speaker 1: noses twitched and quivered as they smelled the smells that
[5:22] Speaker 1: came to them on the currents of the air. They
[5:29] Speaker 1: smelled grass growing in the big meadow. They smelled flower
[5:35] Speaker 1: buds just getting ready to bloom. They smelled the river
[5:42] Speaker 1: full of rushing water. The six little bunny brothers and
[5:50] Speaker 1: sisters looked around some more, and they saw their neighbors
[5:56] Speaker 1: in animal Town just beginning there day. They saw old
[6:04] Speaker 1: missus Chipmunk on her way to visit grandmother Raccoon. They
[6:11] Speaker 1: saw mister Squirrel, who lived in the tree next door,
[6:16] Speaker 1: hurrying off to gather nuts for his hungry family. And
[6:24] Speaker 1: they saw the little squirrel children just coming down from
[6:29] Speaker 1: their home high in the next door tree. Hourray called
[6:37] Speaker 1: the oldest of the squirrel children. Seeing their bunny friends
[6:42] Speaker 1: today is the picnic hooray, said the bunny children in return,
[6:52] Speaker 1: because it was a special day in animal Town. It
[6:58] Speaker 1: was the day of the Spring Picnic, when all the
[7:02] Speaker 1: animals of the town would gather together to celebrate the
[7:08] Speaker 1: coming of springtime. The spring picnic was a town tradition
[7:17] Speaker 1: since well as long as anyone could remember. Grandfather Bunny
[7:25] Speaker 1: told stories about spring picnics when he was a little bunny,
[7:31] Speaker 1: which was a pretty long time ago. And that wasn't all.
[7:39] Speaker 1: Grandfather Bunny also told stories that his grandmother Bunny had
[7:44] Speaker 1: told him about spring picnics when she had been a
[7:50] Speaker 1: little bunny, and that was a very very long time ago.
[8:00] Speaker 1: So you can see that the spring picnic really had
[8:04] Speaker 1: been happening for a long time, and for all that time,
[8:10] Speaker 1: everyone in town had looked forward to it every year,
[8:17] Speaker 1: and this year was no different.
[8:22] Speaker 2: All the animals were eager.
[8:24] Speaker 1: For the coming picnic, and all of them had planned
[8:29] Speaker 1: for something to bring to the feast. Animals all over
[8:35] Speaker 1: town had been gathering plants and nuts and preparing tasty
[8:41] Speaker 1: dishes to contribute to the picnic. The six little Bunny
[8:50] Speaker 1: children had gathered berries in the big green meadow that
[8:55] Speaker 1: lay alongside Animal Town. They had a basket heaped full
[9:03] Speaker 1: of fresh berries, all ready to go, covered with a
[9:08] Speaker 1: pretty blue cloth that Mother Bunny had given them. The
[9:15] Speaker 1: little bunnies also helped Grandmother Bunny to make a big
[9:21] Speaker 1: carrot pie the day before, which she would bring to
[9:26] Speaker 1: the picnic. But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself.
[9:33] Speaker 1: Where was I.
[9:35] Speaker 2: Oh?
[9:36] Speaker 1: Yes, on that glorious morning, as the bunny children perched
[9:43] Speaker 1: in their doorway calling out to the squirrel children in
[9:48] Speaker 1: their tree, hooray, they all said, excited for the picnic
[9:56] Speaker 1: coming up that very day. And then the squirrel children
[10:04] Speaker 1: scampered down from their tree home and hurried over to
[10:09] Speaker 1: the little bunny sisters and brothers. Let's go see the
[10:15] Speaker 1: picnic grounds, said the biggest squirrel sister. Well, as soon
[10:22] Speaker 1: as she said that, all the little bunnies and the
[10:26] Speaker 1: little squirrels saw that it was just the thing to do,
[10:34] Speaker 1: so they scurried off to check with their grown ups,
[10:38] Speaker 1: for even bunny children and squirrel children must not go
[10:43] Speaker 1: off without checking with their grown ups first. And the
[10:49] Speaker 1: squirrel parents and the bunny parents said yes, their children
[10:57] Speaker 1: could go and see the picnic grounds. At least they
[11:04] Speaker 1: could go, so long as they didn't run to the
[11:07] Speaker 1: river's edge, cautioned Mother Bunny, and provided they came back
[11:14] Speaker 1: before the sun climbed too high in the morning sky,
[11:19] Speaker 1: added mister Squirrel. The animal children all promised to stay
[11:27] Speaker 1: away from the water's edge and not to be gone
[11:31] Speaker 1: too long. Then they hurried off together towards the spot
[11:39] Speaker 1: where the spring picnic would take place. It would be held,
[11:46] Speaker 1: as it was every year for as long as anyone
[11:49] Speaker 1: could remember, in the town's square. This was a big
[11:57] Speaker 1: open field in the set of town that stretched out
[12:03] Speaker 1: next to the river. The field was a square shape,
[12:09] Speaker 1: more or less, which accounted for it being called the
[12:13] Speaker 1: town square, and the grass on it was neatly trimmed.
[12:22] Speaker 1: The town square was where all the important events of
[12:26] Speaker 1: Animal Town took place, except when it was raining or snowing,
[12:34] Speaker 1: or generally too cold to be outside. Then the town's
[12:41] Speaker 1: events were held indoors at the old barn. But that's
[12:47] Speaker 1: something for another story all together. At any rate, the
[12:55] Speaker 1: group of young animal friends went together along the river.
[13:03] Speaker 1: The little bunnies hopped and the little squirrels ran, both
[13:09] Speaker 1: as quickly as their short little legs would take them.
[13:16] Speaker 1: What fun it was to hop and race under the
[13:20] Speaker 1: bright sun, feeling the air blowing over and around them,
[13:27] Speaker 1: and listening to the water in the river rushing along
[13:32] Speaker 1: beside them. When the friends reached the town square, they
[13:40] Speaker 1: saw a group of older animals already at work setting
[13:45] Speaker 1: up for the picnic. They had strung pretty pink and
[13:51] Speaker 1: green bunting between some of the trees that grew around
[13:56] Speaker 1: the edges of the field. They had set up tables
[14:02] Speaker 1: along one side of the square, and they'd covered the
[14:06] Speaker 1: tables with pink and green checked tablecloths.
[14:13] Speaker 2: Now they were.
[14:15] Speaker 1: Working on setting up games for the animals to play
[14:19] Speaker 1: when the picnic began. They put up a volleyball net
[14:26] Speaker 1: and set up football goals. They put out a game
[14:32] Speaker 1: called corn hole that had two boards with holes in
[14:36] Speaker 1: them for animals to try to throw beam bags into.
[14:42] Speaker 1: And they arranged a ring toss nearby. And still there
[14:50] Speaker 1: were more games and toys in a big box which
[14:55] Speaker 1: the big animals would set up soon before the picnic began.
[15:04] Speaker 1: The little bunnies and squirrels scurried around in excitement, looking
[15:11] Speaker 1: at all the games and decorations around the square. Just then,
[15:21] Speaker 1: teacher House saw the little animals and fluttered over.
[15:28] Speaker 2: Here.
[15:29] Speaker 1: She called out, you can help me with this. She
[15:35] Speaker 1: showed them some rolls of bunting and asked them to
[15:39] Speaker 1: help her decorate more trees on the other side of
[15:44] Speaker 1: the field. So the bunny children took some of the
[15:50] Speaker 1: bunting and hopped over to attach them low in some
[15:55] Speaker 1: of the trees. Then the squirrel children took the other
[16:02] Speaker 1: ends of the bunting and ran them up into other
[16:06] Speaker 1: trees nearby, where they attached them high in the branches.
[16:15] Speaker 1: In this way, the bunting criss crossed between the trees
[16:20] Speaker 1: in a lovely pattern of pink and green. When they
[16:28] Speaker 1: were done with that task, teacher all offered each of
[16:32] Speaker 1: the little animals a lollipop and thanked them for their help.
[16:40] Speaker 1: Then she fluttered off to continue setting up for the picnic,
[16:46] Speaker 1: and the little bunnies and squirrels squinted upwards, and they
[16:52] Speaker 1: saw that the sun was climbing high in the blue sky.
[16:59] Speaker 1: It was getting later, and they had promised to their
[17:02] Speaker 1: parents not to stay away too long, so they hopped
[17:08] Speaker 1: and hurried around the field one last time, and then
[17:15] Speaker 1: they set off for home. By the time they got
[17:22] Speaker 1: back to their own tree house and their own cozy
[17:26] Speaker 1: den on their own quiet street at the edge of
[17:31] Speaker 1: animal Town, the time was getting close for the picnic
[17:36] Speaker 1: to begin, so the little animals started back into their homes,
[17:45] Speaker 1: the bunnies into their cozy den and the squirrels up
[17:51] Speaker 1: into their leafy tree. In their den, the bunny sisters
[17:58] Speaker 1: and brothers hopped into their bathroom to wash their paws.
[18:05] Speaker 1: Then the three bunny sisters hopped into the little bedroom
[18:10] Speaker 1: they shared, which was painted a bright sky blue, and
[18:18] Speaker 1: the three bunny brothers hopped into the little bedroom that
[18:23] Speaker 1: they shared, which was painted a bright grass green, and
[18:30] Speaker 1: they all changed into their prettiest spring clothes for the picnic.
[18:40] Speaker 1: The oldest sister Bunny wore her favorite yellow dress with
[18:45] Speaker 1: a pattern of white flowers on it, The middle sister
[18:51] Speaker 1: Bunny wore her best blue romper and a matching bow
[18:56] Speaker 1: behind her ears, and the littlest sister Bunny put on
[19:03] Speaker 1: her sparkly pink overalls. The oldest brother Bunny wore his
[19:13] Speaker 1: blue shorts and a shirt with a sailboat on it,
[19:20] Speaker 1: the middle brother wore a matching shirt and shorts of
[19:24] Speaker 1: fire engine red, and the little brother Bunny put on
[19:31] Speaker 1: his favorite orange overalls, which he still loved most of all,
[19:38] Speaker 1: even if Mother Bunny said they were getting a little
[19:42] Speaker 1: short for him. And then they all hopped out to
[19:49] Speaker 1: the Bunny's family kitchen, where father Bunny was just putting
[19:55] Speaker 1: the finishing touches on a dandelion cake. He let the
[20:03] Speaker 1: little bunnies taste the leftover batter from his mixing bowl
[20:09] Speaker 1: if they promised not to get any on their nice,
[20:12] Speaker 1: clean clothes. They promised eagerly. The batter tasted fresh and sweet,
[20:24] Speaker 1: just as a cake for the spring picnic should. And
[20:31] Speaker 1: then at long last it was time to leave and
[20:38] Speaker 1: head to the picnic. The oldest sister Bunny carried the
[20:45] Speaker 1: basket of berries that the Bunny children had gathered, with
[20:51] Speaker 1: the pretty blue cloth laid neatly over the top. The
[20:59] Speaker 1: oldest brother Bunny carried the carrot pie for Grandmother Bunny.
[21:06] Speaker 1: The middle bunnies each carried a basket that Mother Bunny
[21:10] Speaker 1: handed to them, one filled with forks and spoons and
[21:17] Speaker 1: the other filled with napkins. To the littlest sister and
[21:25] Speaker 1: brother Bunny. Grandmother Bunny handed each a bouquet of flowers,
[21:32] Speaker 1: which they would place on the picnic tables to make
[21:36] Speaker 1: them beautiful. Then Father Bunny took up the dandelion cake
[21:44] Speaker 1: he made, and Grandmother Bunny picked up the family's picnic blanket.
[21:53] Speaker 1: Mother bunny turned off all the lights in their cozy
[21:57] Speaker 1: den and locked the door behind them, And then they
[22:05] Speaker 1: all set out, the three sister bunnies, the three brother bunnies,
[22:13] Speaker 1: the grandparent bunnies, and the mother and father bunny, all
[22:20] Speaker 1: heading together towards the town's square. Just ahead, they saw
[22:29] Speaker 1: the squirrel family setting off in the same direction. The
[22:35] Speaker 1: little squirrels had cleaned up too, and they had also
[22:39] Speaker 1: dressed in their favorite clothes for the picnic. The members
[22:46] Speaker 1: of the squirrel family were also carrying dishes and baskets
[22:52] Speaker 1: to contribute to the feast. The bunnies caught up to
[22:58] Speaker 1: them at the next turning, and the children excitedly discussed
[23:05] Speaker 1: all the good things they were bringing to eat. The
[23:12] Speaker 1: squirrel family had prepared a chestnut pie and a bowl
[23:16] Speaker 1: of nuts, along with acorn bread fresh from the oven.
[23:25] Speaker 1: The bread was wrapped in a white cloth, and when
[23:29] Speaker 1: the little bunnies came close to smell it, they could
[23:34] Speaker 1: feel that it was still warm, and my, did it
[23:39] Speaker 1: smell delicious. The sun was high over their heads now,
[23:48] Speaker 1: and the day felt warm and wonderful. A little breeze
[23:55] Speaker 1: was blowing from across the river, ruffling their fur and
[24:01] Speaker 1: keeping them cool and comfortable. They were coming into sight
[24:08] Speaker 1: of the town square now, and how beautiful it looked.
[24:17] Speaker 1: The pink and green bunting floated and drifted in the breeze.
[24:24] Speaker 1: The green leaves of the trees waved gently around the
[24:29] Speaker 1: sides of the field, and the field itself was full
[24:37] Speaker 1: of animals, brightly dressed in clothing of every color of
[24:43] Speaker 1: the rainbow. Animals hopped and strolled, and flew and fluttered
[24:51] Speaker 1: every which way around the square. The tables along the
[24:59] Speaker 1: side of the square were loaded with good things to
[25:03] Speaker 1: eat and drink, and these too were of every color
[25:10] Speaker 1: and shade. There was a huge platter of bright red
[25:17] Speaker 1: watermelon slices. There was a blueberry pie as blue as
[25:24] Speaker 1: the ocean. There was a big glass picture filled with
[25:31] Speaker 1: sunshine yellow lemonade. There were orange carrots topped with bright
[25:38] Speaker 1: green leaves. And there was a loaf of nut brown
[25:43] Speaker 1: bread the color of damp earth. And there were many,
[25:51] Speaker 1: many other lovely dishes that the animals could hardly wait
[25:57] Speaker 1: to sample. The bunny family carefully laid down their own
[26:05] Speaker 1: contributions on the tables. They placed the dandelion cake with
[26:12] Speaker 1: the other cakes, which were decorated in all sorts of
[26:18] Speaker 1: pretty ways. They put the carrot pie on a table
[26:24] Speaker 1: that was full of other yummy looking pies. They placed
[26:31] Speaker 1: the bowl of berries, which the little bunnies had picked,
[26:36] Speaker 1: right beside the big platter of watermelon, and the littlest
[26:44] Speaker 1: bunnies proudly placed their flower bouquets, which were full of
[26:50] Speaker 1: big white daisies, purple violets, and pink geranium flowers. The
[27:01] Speaker 1: squirrel family, too, had laid out their offerings, the big
[27:08] Speaker 1: chestnut pie, the bowl of glistening nuts, and the fragrant
[27:14] Speaker 1: acorn bread still warm from the oven. Together, the bunny
[27:22] Speaker 1: children and the squirrel children skipped and hopped along the tables,
[27:29] Speaker 1: looking at all the picnic foods laid out so temptingly.
[27:38] Speaker 1: Then they each took a plate from the first table.
[27:44] Speaker 1: Now these were not the kind of plates you might
[27:48] Speaker 1: be used to singing on a picnic, for they were
[27:52] Speaker 1: animal town plates. These were plates woven from the plants
[28:00] Speaker 1: that grew beside the river. The animals would gather long,
[28:06] Speaker 1: thin reeds that grew on the river bank and then
[28:11] Speaker 1: weave them together to form strong, lightweight little dishes. Once
[28:21] Speaker 1: the animal children had taken their woven plates, they each
[28:27] Speaker 1: grabbed a napkin from the basket the Bunny family had brought,
[28:33] Speaker 1: and these, too were different than the napkins you might
[28:37] Speaker 1: be used to. These Animal Town napkins were broad leaves
[28:46] Speaker 1: plucked from the trees that grew at the edge of
[28:50] Speaker 1: Animal Town, not far from the bunny's cozy den. Next,
[29:00] Speaker 1: the little bunnies and squirrels took their woven plates and
[29:05] Speaker 1: began to fill them with all their favorite things to eat.
[29:13] Speaker 1: When their plates were piled high, they each took a cup,
[29:19] Speaker 1: which was made from a large acorn cap, and mister
[29:25] Speaker 1: Squirrel filled their cups with whatever they chose to drink.
[29:32] Speaker 1: The biggest sister Bunny had a lemonade, Two of the
[29:38] Speaker 1: brother bunnies wanted fruit punch, and the other bunnies chose
[29:44] Speaker 1: homemade ginger ale. The squirrels had dandelion juice or nutmeg tea.
[29:57] Speaker 1: Then they all carefully took their feast to a shady
[30:02] Speaker 1: spot nearby. They sat down on the picnic blanket laid
[30:09] Speaker 1: out by Grandfather Bunny, and they began to eat munch munch, crunch, sip,
[30:21] Speaker 1: sip slap. It was quiet for a few moments except
[30:28] Speaker 1: for the soft little sounds of the animal children enjoying
[30:33] Speaker 1: their feast. But after a little while they began to chat.
[30:42] Speaker 1: As they ate, they spoke of all the fun they'd
[30:47] Speaker 1: had during the winter months, playing in the snow, splashing
[30:54] Speaker 1: in the rain puddles, or cuddling by a warm fire inside.
[31:04] Speaker 1: They spoke of all the fun they would have in
[31:07] Speaker 1: the springtime, wading in the rushing river, but only when
[31:13] Speaker 1: their parents or grandparents were there to watch them, of course,
[31:18] Speaker 1: and they could pick fruit and flowers among the blossoming trees.
[31:27] Speaker 1: They spoke of what they would do when they were
[31:30] Speaker 1: big bunnies and big squirrels, and they shared stories that
[31:36] Speaker 1: their parents and grandparents had told to them. And then,
[31:46] Speaker 1: when their bellies were full and their plates were empty,
[31:52] Speaker 1: they stretched out and lay back. They looked up at
[31:59] Speaker 1: the leaves of the tree trees waving softly far above
[32:04] Speaker 1: their heads. Soon they said they would go and play
[32:12] Speaker 1: the games that were set up around the field. Oh,
[32:18] Speaker 1: all the games they planned. They would try every single one,
[32:28] Speaker 1: but for the moment they would rest just a bit.
[32:34] Speaker 1: They felt full and comfortable, and their little legs were
[32:39] Speaker 1: tired from hopping and scurrying around all morning. They felt
[32:49] Speaker 1: warm from the sun that peeped through the leaves, but
[32:54] Speaker 1: also comfortably cool from the breeze that ruffled their fur.
[33:02] Speaker 1: They smelled all the good food, and they listened to
[33:07] Speaker 1: the happy sounds of animals talking and playing all around them.
[33:19] Speaker 1: They watched the shadows that danced and pranced across the
[33:23] Speaker 1: trees as the soft wind moved the branches and the
[33:30] Speaker 1: sun shone down serenely. They watched the butterflies and dragonflies
[33:40] Speaker 1: flitting around, coasting now and then on a current of air.
[33:49] Speaker 1: They heard the sounds of songbirds calling out somewhere, just
[33:55] Speaker 1: out of sight, and the little bunnies and the little
[34:03] Speaker 1: squirrels sighed happily, for they knew, deep down in their
[34:12] Speaker 1: little bunny and squirrel hearts that they had all the
[34:18] Speaker 1: wonders of the whole world right there and right then,
[34:27] Speaker 1: on that blanket at the edge of the picnic, there
[34:34] Speaker 1: in the heart.
[34:37] Speaker 2: Of animal town. H
