[0:02] Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, podcasts, radio news.
[0:21] Speaker 2: I'm Matt Miller and I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is
[0:23] Speaker 2: Hot Pursuit.
[0:24] Speaker 3: All right, we have a fantastic guest for you today.
[0:28] Speaker 3: She runs the company that makes a vehicle that we
[0:30] Speaker 3: talk about I think a fair amount.
[0:32] Speaker 2: Lynn called her the CEO of Ineos, and we've been
[0:36] Speaker 2: talking about Ineos because I had one a few weeks
[0:38] Speaker 2: ago and really enjoyed it. Thought it was great, thought
[0:42] Speaker 2: it was interesting, fascinating, a great value for money. And
[0:47] Speaker 2: Lynn's awesome. I was really happy to meet her and
[0:50] Speaker 2: talk to her. She needs to be a regular.
[0:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, She's really cool and it was a great conversation.
[0:56] Speaker 3: The vehicle, obviously, is one that for cars people. I
[1:00] Speaker 3: think everyone knows about it because everyone loved the Old Defender,
[1:05] Speaker 3: and when Landrover stopped making the Old Defender, it was
[1:09] Speaker 3: pretty disappointing to the world of automotive enthusiasts, right.
[1:14] Speaker 2: You could say that, yeah, and it seemed like why
[1:17] Speaker 2: would they They destroyed something that everyone wants, which is
[1:22] Speaker 2: a long heritage, you know, wrought over time on this
[1:26] Speaker 2: iconic shape that everyone recognizes.
[1:29] Speaker 3: Yes, and fortunately it wasn't just you know, penniless internet
[1:36] Speaker 3: auto growth fanboys.
[1:38] Speaker 4: Yeah exactly.
[1:40] Speaker 3: It was also a billionaire at a pub and one
[1:43] Speaker 3: of the most expensive places on the planet, Belgravia.
[1:46] Speaker 2: That's kind of what it takes, isn't it like it
[1:48] Speaker 2: does take a billionaire.
[1:51] Speaker 3: Let's let's get straight to the interview, and then afterwards
[1:54] Speaker 3: we have a couple of things to cover.
[1:56] Speaker 2: Such great timing because I just drove the field Master
[2:01] Speaker 2: and it was my first experience with your product after
[2:05] Speaker 2: hearing about it for years and seeing them driving around,
[2:11] Speaker 2: especially Beverly Hills, but all over LA and I have
[2:13] Speaker 2: to say I was really pleasantly surprised. So of course
[2:18] Speaker 2: Matt has been talking about us as well, So it's
[2:21] Speaker 2: really nice to have you. What I'm trying to say
[2:23] Speaker 2: is it's really nice to have you here with us, Lynn,
[2:25] Speaker 2: and the product is really fascinating to me, and I
[2:31] Speaker 2: had such a nice time testing it. And this is
[2:35] Speaker 2: not a question, really, I guess it's just more of
[2:37] Speaker 2: an intro. Maybe Matt jumps in my question, but that
[2:41] Speaker 2: kind of explains why we're so eager to talk to you,
[2:45] Speaker 2: because to me, this is a fascinating company and a
[2:47] Speaker 2: fascinating story, and I'm just also fascinated to hear about
[2:51] Speaker 2: your life and your background, and maybe this is the
[2:54] Speaker 2: question you come from more of a like a petrochemical background,
[2:58] Speaker 2: right am I am? I get that right? Can you
[3:01] Speaker 2: just sort of walk us through, like how did you
[3:03] Speaker 2: end up leading this really amazing interesting company.
[3:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, it is a great place to start, and thanks
[3:10] Speaker 1: so much to you both for having me on. And
[3:12] Speaker 1: it's always great to talk about the Grenadier. But yeah,
[3:16] Speaker 1: let's spend a minute on me. I mean twenty years
[3:20] Speaker 1: in energy, actually a few years in petrochemicals, which is
[3:24] Speaker 1: all kind of linked. You just move a little bit
[3:26] Speaker 1: down the chain. Joined Anni Els nine years ago from
[3:30] Speaker 1: private equity, and yeah, three years ago, got the kind
[3:35] Speaker 1: of question which is can you go and help out
[3:37] Speaker 1: a little bit and Automotive because it's been a project, right,
[3:41] Speaker 1: it's been about developing and building a car. It's not
[3:43] Speaker 1: been about a business. But now it needs to be
[3:46] Speaker 1: about a business. We're ready to produce it, we're ready
[3:49] Speaker 1: to take it to the market globally, and can you
[3:51] Speaker 1: go in and take a look and see what we
[3:53] Speaker 1: need to do and help us out a little bit?
[3:55] Speaker 1: And yeah, two months later it was like, yeah, you
[3:57] Speaker 1: just need to give up whatever you were doing before,
[4:00] Speaker 1: which was running a chemicals business, and just do this
[4:03] Speaker 1: full time because you know, we need to get this
[4:06] Speaker 1: up and running.
[4:07] Speaker 5: So yeah, what a gig.
[4:09] Speaker 1: I feel like I'm the luckiest person in the world
[4:11] Speaker 1: to get such a bizarre, random and wonderful opportunity.
[4:16] Speaker 2: Moving into an automotive space when you have not worked
[4:20] Speaker 2: in that space, to me is actually I would consider
[4:23] Speaker 2: that an asset. I'm curious how you dealt with that,
[4:28] Speaker 2: because the automotive world can also be rather insular and
[4:32] Speaker 2: really sort of tightly closed off if they don't think
[4:36] Speaker 2: you have the quote right credentials whatever that even means
[4:40] Speaker 2: to be working in cars. Did you face any of that?
[4:43] Speaker 2: And I think it's a huge asset to come from
[4:46] Speaker 2: an outside sector. Did you find that as well?
[4:51] Speaker 5: I think it is an asset.
[4:52] Speaker 1: I think moving any sector I mean energy to chemicals,
[4:55] Speaker 1: as I say, is not such a big step, but
[4:57] Speaker 1: it's still a move. It's still people using acronyms that
[5:00] Speaker 1: you haven't heard before. Way, I think it is absolutely
[5:04] Speaker 1: an asset. Is that you ask all the dumb questions, right,
[5:07] Speaker 1: and a lot of the answers to the dumb questions,
[5:10] Speaker 1: are you dumb ass, this is the answer, and they're right.
[5:14] Speaker 1: But a lot of the questions are, well, this is
[5:16] Speaker 1: our The answers are, it's just why we've always done
[5:19] Speaker 1: it this way, this is how we do it around here.
[5:21] Speaker 1: And actually, when you really scratch below the surface again
[5:24] Speaker 1: and again and again, and you keep asking and people
[5:27] Speaker 1: have to really delve into why, then you quite often get, oh,
[5:31] Speaker 1: actually we can do this differently. And because I might
[5:34] Speaker 1: be new to the sector, but of course Ineos is
[5:36] Speaker 1: as well, and we've kind of got freedom therefore to
[5:39] Speaker 1: not reinvent the wheel when we don't need to, and
[5:42] Speaker 1: learn from the best, but also say, heck, we don't
[5:45] Speaker 1: need to do it like that. We can do it
[5:46] Speaker 1: our way. We can go a more agile way, or
[5:50] Speaker 1: we can go a more you know out there. Let's
[5:53] Speaker 1: just sort of rip up the rule book, which we
[5:55] Speaker 1: kind of like doing. Let's face it and do our
[6:00] Speaker 1: and so it's kind of you know, I'm just really
[6:02] Speaker 1: fortunate to work for a company like this. I don't
[6:03] Speaker 1: think I'll be joining you know, any other large OEM
[6:06] Speaker 1: anytime soon, but for Anios it works.
[6:09] Speaker 3: So I want to just introduce the vehicle because not
[6:12] Speaker 3: everybody knows not everybody's hanging out in Beverly Hills all
[6:16] Speaker 3: the time, right. This was Jim Ratcliffe is a British
[6:22] Speaker 3: I think British billionaire, right, who owns Eneos, which is,
[6:28] Speaker 3: you know, a chemicals company.
[6:30] Speaker 4: Right.
[6:31] Speaker 3: And when land Rover stopped making the Defender, which was
[6:35] Speaker 3: almost ten years ago, now, I guess he had this
[6:40] Speaker 3: idea at the Grenadier, which is an amazing little pub
[6:44] Speaker 3: in Belgravia, to make his own version. I guess he
[6:49] Speaker 3: had approached land Rover and said, like, can I have
[6:52] Speaker 3: the plans or the copyright or whatever trademark and they
[6:56] Speaker 3: said forget it. So he made his own version. And
[6:58] Speaker 3: I think it's so cool. I think we've all dreamt
[7:02] Speaker 3: about like making our own vehicle, you know, but we
[7:05] Speaker 3: don't have the means and this guy does.
[7:08] Speaker 4: So he just did it.
[7:09] Speaker 3: And how long did it take from you know, from
[7:14] Speaker 3: that pint at the Grenadier to the first one rolling
[7:19] Speaker 3: off the line? Like how long has this project been underway?
[7:23] Speaker 1: So from start standing start and it was an absolute
[7:26] Speaker 1: standing start to the first production vehicle off the line
[7:30] Speaker 1: of quite a large state of the art factory in
[7:33] Speaker 1: France was five years and we're now eight years or
[7:37] Speaker 1: seven and a half years in really and you know,
[7:40] Speaker 1: two and a half years worth of selling now fifty countries.
[7:42] Speaker 1: So you know, it's a great intro map. But it's
[7:45] Speaker 1: not just having the means, it's having the kind of
[7:48] Speaker 1: the kuhunas to do it right. It's the you know,
[7:51] Speaker 1: really it's such a bold thing to do, and it's
[7:54] Speaker 1: bold because it's it's really there's a reason why people
[7:58] Speaker 1: don't start automotive company generally.
[8:01] Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure hard And also he had to I
[8:05] Speaker 3: guess there must have been some legal action, right, because
[8:08] Speaker 3: it doesn't look exactly like a defender, but.
[8:11] Speaker 4: To most people it does.
[8:14] Speaker 3: I mean, it's the same shape, it's the same idea,
[8:18] Speaker 3: it has the same kind of to some extent, off
[8:21] Speaker 3: road manners. Right, So how did how did he how
[8:24] Speaker 3: did you pull that off?
[8:27] Speaker 1: Well, look, I think there's we don't shy away from
[8:29] Speaker 1: the fact there was an inspiration here. You know, the
[8:31] Speaker 1: whole idea, as you said at the beginning, Matt, was
[8:33] Speaker 1: you know there's a gap in the market now because
[8:35] Speaker 1: they've left, and you know, the original conversation was with them.
[8:39] Speaker 1: We didn't then set out to just sort of go
[8:41] Speaker 1: and build our version of it. I mean four by
[8:44] Speaker 1: four is a boxy shape so that you can put
[8:46] Speaker 1: you know, really each corner and have maximum visibility. So
[8:50] Speaker 1: you know, a de Wagon looks kind of similar, and
[8:53] Speaker 1: a Landover, an old Landover Defender, looks quite similar because
[8:56] Speaker 1: these are hardcore, original four by fours to do the job.
[9:01] Speaker 1: And I think that, you know, the idea was then
[9:02] Speaker 1: to fill that gap that we believe exists because everyone
[9:05] Speaker 1: else has left the space to go more kind of
[9:08] Speaker 1: crossover into like a lifestyle brand, which is working really
[9:12] Speaker 1: well for them, by the way, I think. So I
[9:15] Speaker 1: think that you know, the car is actually quite different.
[9:18] Speaker 1: I think the sentiment, the feel of the car is
[9:21] Speaker 1: quite different. Of course, it's a modern, refined version as well,
[9:25] Speaker 1: so it's got a lot of modern comforts compared to
[9:27] Speaker 1: some of the older four by fours. That said, we
[9:30] Speaker 1: did find ourselves embroiled and a legal battle or two,
[9:34] Speaker 1: and we navigated those by winning them.
[9:36] Speaker 3: So I heard that slight dig at the G class
[9:41] Speaker 3: at the G Wagon. We love that vehicle, But what
[9:44] Speaker 3: do you think it is that sets apart the Grenadier
[9:47] Speaker 3: from you know, a G Wagon or even a jeep
[9:52] Speaker 3: Wrangler or a Bronco Like what makes this the ultimate
[9:57] Speaker 3: off road or ultimate.
[10:01] Speaker 4: Kind of four by four vehicle.
[10:03] Speaker 1: I think the g Wagon's a great vehicle, by the way,
[10:06] Speaker 1: it absolutely wasn't a dig and I think that it's
[10:08] Speaker 1: just a recognition that where the market has gone for
[10:13] Speaker 1: those kind of vehicles that were at their core, at
[10:15] Speaker 1: their origin, a kind of extreme four by four, the
[10:19] Speaker 1: market is taking them in a direction which is most
[10:21] Speaker 1: people are not taking them off road, right, So the
[10:24] Speaker 1: idea was to go back to first principles. So you know,
[10:26] Speaker 1: it's it's the ladder frame, it's the you know, the
[10:30] Speaker 1: the diff locks, it's the ground clearance, it's the wheel articulation,
[10:36] Speaker 1: it's all of the things that the approach and the
[10:38] Speaker 1: departure angles. It's the extreme thought that's gone into every
[10:42] Speaker 1: aspect of what this car should be capable of doing.
[10:46] Speaker 1: And in my opinion, an ar chief engineer really gets
[10:48] Speaker 1: annoyed with me when I say this, but you know,
[10:51] Speaker 1: it's way over engineered for anything that anyone's actually going
[10:55] Speaker 1: to do with it.
[10:56] Speaker 4: So that's lacking, i think from the market in general,
[11:00] Speaker 4: no matter what kind of car you're looking.
[11:01] Speaker 1: For, Yeah, it's blatantly over engineered, which you know makes
[11:05] Speaker 1: the commercial job a little more difficult, but you know,
[11:08] Speaker 1: he corrects me every time and says it's overspect and
[11:11] Speaker 1: not over engineered. So look, I mean, I don't think
[11:15] Speaker 1: you know, I think there are other very capable bull
[11:17] Speaker 1: cars in the market, and there's literally no doubt that,
[11:19] Speaker 1: you know, all of the vehicles were mentioning right now,
[11:22] Speaker 1: whether it's g Wagon, Land or are all extremely capable
[11:25] Speaker 1: of roaders. It's just that we've kind of filled a space,
[11:29] Speaker 1: which is this is what the car is for, this
[11:32] Speaker 1: is the purpose, and therefore everything starts with that.
[11:36] Speaker 2: I remember when I was driving the field Master and
[11:40] Speaker 2: doing the review, I talked to a lot of my
[11:41] Speaker 2: friends who are really big off roaders, and there are
[11:44] Speaker 2: two questions for me that I actually spoke with Gregor about,
[11:47] Speaker 2: but I'd love to hear your part two is are
[11:52] Speaker 2: would they ever put a manual in? And would they
[11:55] Speaker 2: ever do a diesel engine? And that, you know, speaking
[11:58] Speaker 2: about what your customers want and respecting the vehicles. You know,
[12:02] Speaker 2: Matt and I talk about this all the time. We
[12:04] Speaker 2: talk about how everyone says they want a manual, but
[12:06] Speaker 2: the takewoad is always really low. What's the conversation for
[12:10] Speaker 2: you guys at ineos about doing a manual doing a
[12:14] Speaker 2: diesel engine, and on top of that, you know, are
[12:17] Speaker 2: you feeling pressure around emissions regulations to try to comply.
[12:23] Speaker 2: What is that whole conversation like for you guys?
[12:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So let's I was going to start with
[12:29] Speaker 1: the easy one, which is powertrain first, but given the
[12:31] Speaker 1: admissions question, I'll come back to it.
[12:33] Speaker 5: So manual, I mean, sure.
[12:35] Speaker 1: It's it's an automatic automatic transmission, you know, eight speed ZF.
[12:40] Speaker 1: It's excellent with the BMW engine that we've put in
[12:43] Speaker 1: the car. And you know, most people, despite everything I've
[12:47] Speaker 1: just said about the purpose of the vehicle, are driving
[12:49] Speaker 1: it more on road than off and therefore, you know,
[12:52] Speaker 1: the manual the automatic transmission works really well. You can
[12:56] Speaker 1: you can sort of nudge it into manual. And actually
[12:59] Speaker 1: where I use the in manual mode is normally on
[13:02] Speaker 1: like really steep descents, because we have an automatic descent
[13:07] Speaker 1: control mode, which I you don't feel the need to
[13:10] Speaker 1: use if I can just flick it into first gear.
[13:13] Speaker 1: So you know, there's the opportunity to do that when
[13:15] Speaker 1: you're off roading. It's not quite as neat as having
[13:18] Speaker 1: paddles on the steering wheel, but it kind of works
[13:21] Speaker 1: for me, and that's how I would use it. So
[13:23] Speaker 1: as a result of that, we're not planning to kind
[13:25] Speaker 1: of build like a pure manual car. I think it's
[13:28] Speaker 1: got enough optionality in it. We do have a diesel engine,
[13:32] Speaker 1: it's just not available in the US.
[13:34] Speaker 2: Oh okay, well.
[13:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, And actually, I mean that's just because you know
[13:40] Speaker 1: that aren't really there isn't that much call for diesel
[13:43] Speaker 1: vehicles in the US.
[13:44] Speaker 5: They'll be you know, a cohort of extremely.
[13:48] Speaker 1: You know, dedicated off roaders that would love a diesel
[13:52] Speaker 1: and you know, can probably import one because we have them. Weirdly,
[13:58] Speaker 1: you know, our market has been come we skewed now
[14:00] Speaker 1: if you look at our diesel versus gas engines, because
[14:05] Speaker 1: before we launched in the US, we were probably about
[14:07] Speaker 1: seventy percent diesel, but with the US coming onto the books,
[14:13] Speaker 1: we're probably about fifty to fifty now diesel and gas worldwide.
[14:18] Speaker 1: And then emissions, I mean, gosh, it's such a topic,
[14:22] Speaker 1: much much more so in Europe than I think it
[14:24] Speaker 1: is in the US. And not only are we under
[14:28] Speaker 1: pressure to kind of bring new power trains to market
[14:31] Speaker 1: that are not really that well equipped for a really
[14:35] Speaker 1: serious off roader because you know, an electric Randidier is
[14:39] Speaker 1: just not going to work. The Grandeur's two point seven tons, like,
[14:41] Speaker 1: it's not gonna We're not going to fit a battery
[14:44] Speaker 1: in this car, and for it, you know, for it
[14:46] Speaker 1: to be used off road, it's not going to work.
[14:48] Speaker 2: You had toyter round and then decided, you know, it's
[14:51] Speaker 2: we're going to pivot.
[14:52] Speaker 3: Which I'm here to tell you that the electric g
[14:54] Speaker 3: Wagon works.
[14:56] Speaker 4: I just had one for a week and it was
[14:58] Speaker 4: pretty amazing.
[14:59] Speaker 3: In fact, I used to have a gas g Wagon
[15:02] Speaker 3: and I think electric works even better for that platform.
[15:07] Speaker 5: So no, and it's it's really cool.
[15:09] Speaker 1: It's just that we would have to change our platformat
[15:11] Speaker 1: because you know, the way that we've kind of engineered
[15:13] Speaker 1: the car, the ladder frame, the weight of it, you
[15:16] Speaker 1: can't then put a battery in it. So the g
[15:18] Speaker 1: Wagon is on a completely different platform, and that's what
[15:21] Speaker 1: we would have to do as well. So what we
[15:22] Speaker 1: actually launched instead of an electric Grenadier was a new
[15:25] Speaker 1: model called the Fuselier, which is on a skateboard platform
[15:29] Speaker 1: rather than a ladder frame. So the entire you know,
[15:32] Speaker 1: the entire frame of the car is light enough to
[15:36] Speaker 1: withstand a pretty serious battery to allow you to be
[15:38] Speaker 1: able to do pretty serious off roading.
[15:41] Speaker 5: So that's the solution.
[15:42] Speaker 1: It's just that we can't really reverse engineer the Grenadier
[15:45] Speaker 1: to be an electric version. No doubt, you can have
[15:48] Speaker 1: a really solid off road electric car, and that's what
[15:52] Speaker 1: we aim to do with the Fuselier.
[15:54] Speaker 4: I respect that. Hey, how do you deal with the
[15:58] Speaker 4: dealership issue?
[16:00] Speaker 3: Because all of your competitors, even land Rover, has dealers,
[16:05] Speaker 3: regardless of how often people complain about them. Did you
[16:10] Speaker 3: have to start a new dealership network? I mean here
[16:13] Speaker 3: in the US, in Europe, in Asia that seems like
[16:18] Speaker 3: almost as big and undertaking as developing a car.
[16:22] Speaker 1: Oh, I'm so glad you recognize that, Matt, because I
[16:25] Speaker 1: think you know, the car is the hard bit.
[16:26] Speaker 5: But you're right.
[16:27] Speaker 1: Getting it out to market in you know, within fifty
[16:31] Speaker 1: countries now, that's you know, getting on for three hundred
[16:34] Speaker 1: retail locations and building that in two and a half
[16:38] Speaker 1: years has been really challenging as well. It's worked really
[16:41] Speaker 1: particularly well in the US, though, I would say, because
[16:45] Speaker 1: we've got you know, a really really strong dealer franchise
[16:50] Speaker 1: model in the US that I know, you know, we've
[16:52] Speaker 1: kind of as car manufacturers, tried to pick apart at
[16:55] Speaker 1: various times over over the last ten years to see
[16:59] Speaker 1: if we can be more direct consumer. But we did
[17:01] Speaker 1: that in one or two of it other markets. It
[17:03] Speaker 1: doesn't work very well. And I think that what we
[17:06] Speaker 1: have in the US now is a network of extremely strong, passionate,
[17:11] Speaker 1: supportive dealers who are out there, you know, kind of
[17:14] Speaker 1: scrapping with us to build this brand. So it's worked
[17:17] Speaker 1: really well.
[17:18] Speaker 2: I have to say this, actually this last weekend, I
[17:20] Speaker 2: was just out in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl and
[17:23] Speaker 2: drove past Russnak Yeah yeah, which has such a good
[17:28] Speaker 2: reputation in California, and your guys section of that dealership
[17:34] Speaker 2: look fabulous, and I mean you had there were lots
[17:36] Speaker 2: of rigs out there. It looked really great. And I
[17:39] Speaker 2: think Russnak is the dealer that did the loan the
[17:41] Speaker 2: press loan for me too, So you know, for what
[17:44] Speaker 2: it's worth, that was a really positive experience. It was
[17:46] Speaker 2: nice to see and nice to experience that.
[17:49] Speaker 1: And that's really great to hear, Hannah, Hannah, because you know,
[17:52] Speaker 1: that's exactly what we need, is people getting the best
[17:55] Speaker 1: experience possible. This is all about the customer. People are
[17:58] Speaker 1: spending their hard earned cash on a new car, not
[18:02] Speaker 1: just a new car, but a new concept of a
[18:05] Speaker 1: car and a new company that hasn't done this before.
[18:08] Speaker 1: Although we've worked with a massive amount of the best
[18:11] Speaker 1: experts in the business, so we believe that we've delivered
[18:13] Speaker 1: a really strong vehicle, but it's there's a big leap
[18:17] Speaker 1: of faith and we need to work with the best
[18:19] Speaker 1: of the best that are really putting the.
[18:21] Speaker 5: Customer at the heart of that.
[18:23] Speaker 1: And so I think we built a lot of the
[18:27] Speaker 1: network through relationships in a way with people like Brian
[18:30] Speaker 1: from Ruznak, which is okay, you know, and when we
[18:34] Speaker 1: get them all in a room together, I think they
[18:35] Speaker 1: look around the room and say, oh yeah, you know,
[18:37] Speaker 1: they respect to one another because they're the kind of
[18:39] Speaker 1: people that really know what they're doing, that have been
[18:41] Speaker 1: in the business a long time, but mainly put the
[18:44] Speaker 1: customer first, and they've taken a leap of faith with
[18:46] Speaker 1: us as well.
[18:47] Speaker 2: What would you say, is there a single point of
[18:51] Speaker 2: has a tendency that you seem to get from consumers
[18:55] Speaker 2: who might be interested in buying and a grenadier, But
[18:58] Speaker 2: you know, is there one specific thing that is really
[19:01] Speaker 2: a stumbling block for them that you guys are working
[19:04] Speaker 2: to overcome.
[19:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think one of the main ones, and this
[19:08] Speaker 1: is global, but certainly true in the US as well
[19:11] Speaker 1: because it's such a vast country, is that you know,
[19:14] Speaker 1: we'll round out this year with about forty retail locations
[19:19] Speaker 1: in North America, So that's including a couple in Canada
[19:22] Speaker 1: as well. You know, that's not exactly you know, carpet
[19:28] Speaker 1: bombing a vast country with lots of service locations, right, So,
[19:33] Speaker 1: I think people will travel to buy a car, but
[19:36] Speaker 1: they don't want to travel to service a car. So
[19:38] Speaker 1: I think that providing like a really solid after sales
[19:43] Speaker 1: capability for people, now, we're not going to probably manage,
[19:47] Speaker 1: given our size and given our age, we're probably not
[19:49] Speaker 1: going to manage to achieve that across the United States.
[19:52] Speaker 1: So what we really focus then on is really servicing
[19:55] Speaker 1: the people around the areas where there's critical mass of
[19:58] Speaker 1: people that have bought grenadiers. I think that's something that
[20:00] Speaker 1: we've got to really focus on, is giving people the
[20:03] Speaker 1: comfort that they're going to be able to get their
[20:04] Speaker 1: car serviced at minimal inconvenience.
[20:07] Speaker 3: I realized after the fact that I left out Africa,
[20:09] Speaker 3: and I said, your dealership networks in the US and
[20:12] Speaker 3: Europe and Asia, but Africa must be like the spiritual
[20:16] Speaker 3: home of the Grenadier, right, because it's like an overlanding vehicle.
[20:20] Speaker 4: It's perfect for safaris.
[20:23] Speaker 3: What are you think the coolest use case scenarios that
[20:28] Speaker 3: you've heard of so far for your new car? I mean,
[20:31] Speaker 3: have you have you got a Safari operator that ordered
[20:34] Speaker 3: twenty Grenadier's or do you have people using them for
[20:38] Speaker 3: science experiment at the North Pole?
[20:40] Speaker 4: Or is there something awesome that you've seen.
[20:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, we have, We've seen a few in Africa. Is
[20:45] Speaker 1: a great place to talk about because you're right and
[20:47] Speaker 1: you're so spot on. Actually, it is the spiritual home
[20:50] Speaker 1: because I think although the idea was in the pub,
[20:53] Speaker 1: the Grenadier Pub, it was really boring out of doing
[20:57] Speaker 1: lots and lots of adventurous travel in Africa.
[20:59] Speaker 5: You know, gym to go to places that are.
[21:01] Speaker 1: Really untouched and really adventurous and you need the tool
[21:05] Speaker 1: to get you there and get you out again, particularly
[21:07] Speaker 1: in some you know, quite dangerous places with a lot
[21:10] Speaker 1: of the animals and things that are roaming around. Some
[21:12] Speaker 1: of the places he likes to spend time in Africa. Yeah,
[21:17] Speaker 1: I guess the most fun aspect of that is we
[21:20] Speaker 1: do actually have a Safari game viewer Grenadier, which is
[21:24] Speaker 1: quite exciting. So, you know, we we went and built
[21:27] Speaker 1: one with a modifier in Botswana to see what it
[21:30] Speaker 1: would look like, to see if Jim liked it. It
[21:33] Speaker 1: was his birthday at the time, and he liked it
[21:36] Speaker 1: so much we bought the modifier and we're now.
[21:39] Speaker 5: Producing game viewers.
[21:41] Speaker 1: So yeah, coming to a Safari camp near you.
[21:46] Speaker 2: You mentioned importing earlier. I'm just curious, how are you
[21:51] Speaker 2: guys doing with the tariff situation? Are you seeing that
[21:56] Speaker 2: already impacting buyers in the US? You know, how are
[22:00] Speaker 2: you feeling about all that?
[22:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it was it was definitely a blow because,
[22:06] Speaker 1: you know, we were just really gearing up. We were
[22:08] Speaker 1: just over one year selling in the US, you know,
[22:12] Speaker 1: biggest market, you know, aiming for significant growth this year,
[22:16] Speaker 1: you know, you know, forty percent growth this year, completely
[22:19] Speaker 1: achievable given that we're adding about fourteen sales points.
[22:23] Speaker 5: You know, this is completely achievable.
[22:26] Speaker 1: And it just kind of arrested us in our steps
[22:29] Speaker 1: for about five minutes of going you know, my god,
[22:31] Speaker 1: what do we do now? It's twenty five percent on
[22:34] Speaker 1: top of a two and a half percent tariff.
[22:37] Speaker 5: You know, there's no doubt that that's not.
[22:41] Speaker 1: Anything like what we expected to happen or wanted to happen.
[22:44] Speaker 1: We knew that we'd be tariff movement, but we expected
[22:47] Speaker 1: the Europeans because we're effectively because we manufacture in France,
[22:51] Speaker 1: were coming from Europe. We expected the Europeans to negotiate,
[22:54] Speaker 1: and they didn't, and all of a sudden, the worst
[22:56] Speaker 1: case scenario happened, not just on cars but on par.
[23:01] Speaker 5: And for US as well.
[23:02] Speaker 1: We have a Quartermaster pickup truck I'm not sure if
[23:04] Speaker 1: you've seen that yet, which is perfect for the US market,
[23:08] Speaker 1: and because it's a pickup truck and a light commercial vehicle,
[23:11] Speaker 1: it also attracts chicken tax, so actually.
[23:15] Speaker 2: To import now the chicken tax is right, yeah, so
[23:20] Speaker 2: it's like fifty right, yes, in addition to.
[23:24] Speaker 1: So fifty percent for this fantastic car that's really built
[23:28] Speaker 1: for the US market. And we just don't really understand
[23:32] Speaker 1: why europe is not motivated to negotiate away and inequity,
[23:36] Speaker 1: because you know, all the US government was saying was
[23:40] Speaker 1: there's an inequity you're paying two and a half percent
[23:42] Speaker 1: to get into my country. I'm paying ten percent to
[23:44] Speaker 1: get into yours. Do something about it. And that seems
[23:47] Speaker 1: like a really straightforward business negotiation to me. So very frustrating.
[23:52] Speaker 1: But are we seeing a massive impact. I mean, we
[23:54] Speaker 1: put our prices up by five percent, so twenty five
[23:57] Speaker 1: percent increase in cost, but we put our price up
[24:02] Speaker 1: by five percent, which means, you know, a mixture of
[24:04] Speaker 1: ourselves and our retailers are are kind of taking the
[24:07] Speaker 1: pain to kind of just try and keep demand up
[24:10] Speaker 1: for such a nascent, early brand that isn't really very
[24:15] Speaker 1: well known yet. And we want to just give buyers,
[24:19] Speaker 1: people who are sitting on the fence, the comfort to
[24:20] Speaker 1: say it's still a heck of a lot of car
[24:23] Speaker 1: for the money. It's a good price for the vehicle,
[24:26] Speaker 1: and we'll support the extra tariffs for now, you know,
[24:31] Speaker 1: until hopefully there's a negotiation, and if not, we'll continue
[24:35] Speaker 1: to support it. This is a sustainable plan which says,
[24:38] Speaker 1: you know, this is what you'll pay for a Grenadier now,
[24:40] Speaker 1: and you know at the end of the year as well.
[24:43] Speaker 4: So you build the you build the I guess truck
[24:47] Speaker 4: is a word I want to use, is that a
[24:49] Speaker 4: fair word to use for the.
[24:50] Speaker 5: Because it's a it's a great word.
[24:52] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[24:52] Speaker 3: So you build the truck in France, right, didn't you
[24:55] Speaker 3: buy a factory in France? Tell us about that product facility,
[25:01] Speaker 3: why you chose it, and how it's working.
[25:05] Speaker 1: Yes, So we bought a former Mercedes plant in France
[25:10] Speaker 1: about five years ago now actually, so we've had it
[25:12] Speaker 1: for quite some time, and it's really it's one of
[25:15] Speaker 1: the really kind of best parts of our story in
[25:18] Speaker 1: a way, and it's one of the luckier parts of
[25:20] Speaker 1: our story because I think if we'd had to build
[25:21] Speaker 1: a factory at the same time as building a car,
[25:24] Speaker 1: we might still be doing that rather than talking about
[25:27] Speaker 1: tariffs and things. So, yeah, it was one of the
[25:30] Speaker 1: best things that happened, really, And you know, Mercedes had
[25:32] Speaker 1: made a number of very large scale investments in that plant,
[25:36] Speaker 1: including in a new state of the art body shop,
[25:38] Speaker 1: paint shop, but it had kind of decided to rationalize
[25:41] Speaker 1: their production to lots of other places across the world
[25:43] Speaker 1: because of course they have many, many factories, and you know,
[25:48] Speaker 1: we got the opportunity to take it on and run
[25:52] Speaker 1: with it really with that investment already made. So it
[25:54] Speaker 1: was a no brainer and got us up and running
[25:57] Speaker 1: really quickly, and we are very, very grateful for that opportunity.
[26:03] Speaker 2: I'm just curious, you know, do you ever get a
[26:06] Speaker 2: sense about whether Jim would would bring on additional investors
[26:11] Speaker 2: into the company. You know, is he giving you guidance
[26:14] Speaker 2: about how much he wants to continue investing versus bringing
[26:17] Speaker 2: others to lighten the load just on him.
[26:20] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a great question, Hannah, and a really insightful
[26:23] Speaker 1: one at a time when the industry is challenging right
[26:26] Speaker 1: on almost every metric. You know, we talked about missions earlier.
[26:29] Speaker 1: That's hadding loads of cost in Europe in particular where
[26:32] Speaker 1: we manufacture. So you know, it's it's a really tricky time.
[26:37] Speaker 1: But there's no doubt that, I mean, Jim's commitment to
[26:40] Speaker 1: the business is you know, unwavering.
[26:45] Speaker 5: You know, he is the he's the kind of beginning
[26:50] Speaker 5: of all of this business.
[26:51] Speaker 1: He seeded it. He you know, it's his, it's his idea.
[26:56] Speaker 1: And what we've done to kind of take that idea
[26:58] Speaker 1: and run with it and make it a global business
[27:00] Speaker 1: that is you know, pretty close after a very short
[27:04] Speaker 1: time to washing its face. There's no doubt that his
[27:07] Speaker 1: support is absolutely unwavering. But I'll also say I don't
[27:11] Speaker 1: think you ever say never in any situation, right because
[27:16] Speaker 1: what you need in automotive is scale, and we've got
[27:18] Speaker 1: ambitions way beyond what we're doing today, way beyond you know,
[27:23] Speaker 1: this is just the start for us. We've got, you know,
[27:25] Speaker 1: probably three or four other models in mind, you know,
[27:28] Speaker 1: the Fusilier being one that we're kind of quite far
[27:31] Speaker 1: through developing. But you know, I'd say that if it's
[27:35] Speaker 1: the right thing to do at the right time, we
[27:37] Speaker 1: would never say never.
[27:39] Speaker 2: That brings up one more question I have for you,
[27:41] Speaker 2: and it's about what you're talking about, your ambitions. I
[27:44] Speaker 2: have to say I was so pleasantly surprised at the
[27:47] Speaker 2: price point of the field Master. You know, I we've
[27:51] Speaker 2: seen so many resto mods obviously this is not a
[27:54] Speaker 2: resto mood, but so many you know, off roading vehicles,
[27:57] Speaker 2: rest of mods that are six figures, and the field
[28:02] Speaker 2: Master that I drove was around eighty a little over eighty.
[28:05] Speaker 2: How important is it for you guys to stay around
[28:08] Speaker 2: that price point? Is that a big part of the
[28:11] Speaker 2: plan and the structure of the company, or will you
[28:14] Speaker 2: be expanding, going up, going down? What's that conversation, like, so.
[28:21] Speaker 1: I think with the Grenadier, we think the price points right,
[28:24] Speaker 1: I said this earlier, like I do think it's a
[28:26] Speaker 1: lot of car for the money because I know how
[28:27] Speaker 1: much engineering is in this car and the component tree,
[28:30] Speaker 1: like it's the best of components, and there's the things
[28:33] Speaker 1: you can you know, see in touch, like you know
[28:35] Speaker 1: if you pop the hood and you see it's BMW engine,
[28:38] Speaker 1: but it's also you know, the control units like Bosh Continental,
[28:43] Speaker 1: you know, our carro seat, our Brembo breaks. You know,
[28:47] Speaker 1: these are all brand names that are the componentry that's
[28:51] Speaker 1: gone into the car. F transmission. I'd already called the
[28:53] Speaker 1: mat Matt thought.
[28:54] Speaker 3: I know, but theresision world, you know, so I felt
[28:59] Speaker 3: like it was mentioned again.
[29:00] Speaker 4: I wonder about the steering specifically.
[29:02] Speaker 3: Can I ask about that, Linn, because while I haven't
[29:04] Speaker 3: driven it, I guess I'd love to hear Hannah's thoughts.
[29:08] Speaker 4: I've watched a lot of.
[29:10] Speaker 3: YouTube videos about the Grenadier because I am obsessed, kind
[29:13] Speaker 3: of obsessed with this vehicle and have been for a
[29:15] Speaker 3: few years. The one thing that everyone calls out is
[29:18] Speaker 3: that it's not your typical kind of self centering steering,
[29:23] Speaker 3: and that's because of the off road you know, pedigree
[29:25] Speaker 3: of the of the engineering.
[29:29] Speaker 4: Would you ever change.
[29:31] Speaker 3: That or is that you think, you know, like a
[29:35] Speaker 3: specific piece of the vehicle's character that you want.
[29:39] Speaker 5: Yeah, I think.
[29:40] Speaker 1: For the Grenadier in particular, and I completely understand the point.
[29:46] Speaker 1: I obviously drive one. I read your review, Hannah, so
[29:48] Speaker 1: I kind of know what your thoughts were, and you,
[29:51] Speaker 1: you know, really really well described it as well as
[29:54] Speaker 1: to why it is the way it is, and when
[29:56] Speaker 1: you do a lot of off roading, you really feel why,
[29:59] Speaker 1: because that's stability. When you're doing some pretty difficult off roading,
[30:03] Speaker 1: you know, you feel like immediately you know why it
[30:07] Speaker 1: is the way it is. But on the road that
[30:09] Speaker 1: can feel you know, a bit jarring, particularly I would
[30:13] Speaker 1: say in a world where modern cars aren't like that,
[30:16] Speaker 1: whereas if you go back ten fifteen years, you know,
[30:18] Speaker 1: it was very normal to drive cars that felt like that.
[30:22] Speaker 1: So I get in a Grenadier on the road and
[30:25] Speaker 1: you know, within five minutes it wasn't really bothering me
[30:28] Speaker 1: at all because I kind of remembered what it was
[30:30] Speaker 1: like to drive.
[30:31] Speaker 5: Older, slightly older cars.
[30:33] Speaker 1: And I kind of love it as well, because you know,
[30:35] Speaker 1: talk about it sort of putting the drive back into driving.
[30:38] Speaker 5: You know, I don't need to kind of have a.
[30:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't need to have a fingertip, you know,
[30:43] Speaker 1: on the steering wheel. I kind of like feeling the
[30:46] Speaker 1: robustness of the vehicles, so it doesn't bother me at all.
[30:49] Speaker 1: But to answer your question, I think, you know, there
[30:51] Speaker 1: are probably optimizations will make to the Grendier because we're
[30:55] Speaker 1: listening all the time and we want to make sure
[30:58] Speaker 1: that we make it the best vehicle it can be.
[31:00] Speaker 1: And the way that you'd best do that is listen
[31:03] Speaker 1: to your customers. And I think that there are optimizations,
[31:06] Speaker 1: but there will be that there will be tweaks. They
[31:08] Speaker 1: won't be we're not going to change the steering system.
[31:11] Speaker 1: But then when we were, you know, starting the development
[31:15] Speaker 1: of the Fusilier, which doesn't need to be our most
[31:17] Speaker 1: most off road capab capable vehicle because we have that
[31:21] Speaker 1: in the Grenadier. That will be a rack and pinion system,
[31:24] Speaker 1: because that will be a much more of an urban
[31:26] Speaker 1: vehicle that you can take off road rather than an
[31:29] Speaker 1: off road vehicle that you can take into the city,
[31:31] Speaker 1: which I think is kind of what the Grenadier is.
[31:34] Speaker 4: I can't wait to drive this vehicle, christ I want
[31:36] Speaker 4: to drive it.
[31:37] Speaker 1: Oh, I'll get you in one, mate.
[31:40] Speaker 2: Like, yes, the steering is noticeable, but it's not a problem.
[31:45] Speaker 2: It's just different. And I totally agree that. You know,
[31:51] Speaker 2: you get used to it really quickly, and if you
[31:53] Speaker 2: want something that is going to go canyon carving, you
[31:56] Speaker 2: just get a different vehicle. You know this, this is
[31:59] Speaker 2: not that it's we talk all the time about the
[32:01] Speaker 2: right tool for the job, and you know, to me,
[32:05] Speaker 2: at least, I like how it has a personality that
[32:09] Speaker 2: you know, it's it's alive. I really like that. I'm
[32:12] Speaker 2: Matt and I talk all the time about how we're
[32:14] Speaker 2: so tired of driving appliances around.
[32:16] Speaker 3: So yeah, I feel like it must be a defining
[32:18] Speaker 3: characteristic because that's what people used to say about the
[32:21] Speaker 3: old g Wagon and now that they've made it obviously
[32:25] Speaker 3: a road driving car, and.
[32:28] Speaker 4: The same is true of the Bronco. It's more for Starbucks,
[32:32] Speaker 4: you know.
[32:33] Speaker 3: I mean, I'm sure you can take it off road
[32:34] Speaker 3: as well, but the idea is they had to make
[32:37] Speaker 3: it drivable for soccer moms too.
[32:40] Speaker 1: I hope that's not too yeah, And I mean I'd
[32:42] Speaker 1: say that a lot of our clientele is is that
[32:45] Speaker 1: you know, we're you kind of joke to the beginning
[32:47] Speaker 1: of that about seeing lots, you.
[32:49] Speaker 5: Know, riding around Beverly Hills.
[32:51] Speaker 1: You know that that is the market as well, because
[32:55] Speaker 1: it's also just something different, right, It's a cool looking car,
[32:57] Speaker 1: it's different, stands out and people enjoy its character. Yeah,
[33:03] Speaker 1: I guess because it's got quite a lot of character
[33:05] Speaker 1: inside as well. We talk a lot about this vehicle,
[33:08] Speaker 1: but the interior has got quite a lot of character.
[33:10] Speaker 1: It's quite you know, different, designed by us to kind
[33:15] Speaker 1: of really feel like you're in a different environment, and
[33:19] Speaker 1: that's got a lot of a lure as well as
[33:21] Speaker 1: just the off characteristic.
[33:22] Speaker 3: I have a neighbor in Scarsdale, New York who has one,
[33:25] Speaker 3: and I stopped to talk to him about it. He said,
[33:27] Speaker 3: everybody stops to talk to him about it, and obviously
[33:30] Speaker 3: we wouldn't if he just had a jeep. So you know,
[33:33] Speaker 3: that's definitely a huge bonus having something that other people
[33:37] Speaker 3: don't necessarily have.
[33:38] Speaker 4: Having said that, I'm sure you want to sell more.
[33:42] Speaker 3: How many are you expecting to sell this year or
[33:45] Speaker 3: do you have a target for now or five years
[33:48] Speaker 3: from now?
[33:49] Speaker 4: What are you thinking in terms of volume.
[33:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm thinking, I mean, we are aiming for
[33:55] Speaker 1: I think our target this year is eleven thousand, which
[34:00] Speaker 1: again you know when we did about eight last year.
[34:03] Speaker 2: From the standing star is global sales or North America.
[34:06] Speaker 5: No North America, so you.
[34:10] Speaker 4: Know where your GLO global sales.
[34:13] Speaker 1: So we've got we've got twenty five thousand grenadiers on
[34:17] Speaker 1: the road globally at the moment, and you know, seeking
[34:20] Speaker 1: to grow quite quickly now because we've got quite a
[34:23] Speaker 1: lot of global coverage now, right. So for the first
[34:26] Speaker 1: year we were just kind of sort of eking into
[34:29] Speaker 1: and getting started up into kind of i'd say early
[34:33] Speaker 1: markets like the UK and Germany and Australia, whereas you
[34:37] Speaker 1: know now we're kind of really expanding. The US has
[34:40] Speaker 1: been a huge part of that. So yeah, the growth
[34:44] Speaker 1: last year from the US alone was was really really
[34:47] Speaker 1: substantial for us, and I think that you know, as
[34:51] Speaker 1: we went into this year, it was all then about
[34:53] Speaker 1: continued growth, so adding quite a lot of sales points,
[34:58] Speaker 1: adding quite a lot of you know, filling in some
[35:01] Speaker 1: of the white gaps big you know, metropolis white gaps
[35:05] Speaker 1: on the map that is going to really help us grow.
[35:08] Speaker 1: And then you know, The final aspect of that, of course,
[35:10] Speaker 1: is just awareness. I think almost nobody has heard of us.
[35:13] Speaker 1: We've still got such a big job to do to
[35:16] Speaker 1: tell our kind of really quite unique backstory. And you
[35:21] Speaker 1: get people into the driving seat of this car because
[35:24] Speaker 1: it is I don't think there's anything like it on
[35:28] Speaker 1: the market, which means you get in and as you say, Hannah,
[35:31] Speaker 1: you know, for lots of people just say this, this
[35:32] Speaker 1: won't suit my life. We don't need to sell you know,
[35:36] Speaker 1: a million of them a year. That's that's not a problem.
[35:40] Speaker 2: But for the.
[35:40] Speaker 1: People that really get it and they get in the
[35:43] Speaker 1: driver's seat, they just kind of it kind of brings
[35:46] Speaker 1: out your inner child or something. You know, You've got
[35:49] Speaker 1: this kind of this this this toy that you're playing
[35:53] Speaker 1: with that's got lots of fun capability and fun things
[35:57] Speaker 1: you can do with it. And I kind of think
[35:59] Speaker 1: it brings us all back to being like a kid again.
[36:01] Speaker 1: And I think for us to grow, just getting more
[36:04] Speaker 1: people to experience that.
[36:05] Speaker 3: People will know now now that you're on the Hot
[36:07] Speaker 3: Pursuit podcast, you know, we have dozens of listeners. So
[36:14] Speaker 3: but also Hannah wrote about it in Hot Pursuit and
[36:16] Speaker 3: I asked my buddy Tim. He asked me what the
[36:19] Speaker 3: podcast was on today and I said the Iner and
[36:22] Speaker 3: he said, oh, they sponsor a Tour de Frost team.
[36:25] Speaker 4: So what do you what do you do to get
[36:29] Speaker 4: the message out?
[36:30] Speaker 3: Are you plopping down a bunch of are you plopping
[36:33] Speaker 3: down thousands of pounds on advertising? Or is it are
[36:37] Speaker 3: you sponsoring extreme sports teams or does Jim put it
[36:42] Speaker 3: on the side of a hot air balloon or what
[36:44] Speaker 3: do you do?
[36:46] Speaker 5: That's a great question like that.
[36:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll note down some of your ideas there.
[36:52] Speaker 5: Sounds great.
[36:54] Speaker 1: I mean, we're not going to go down the route
[36:56] Speaker 1: of in sort typical in your style. We're not going
[36:58] Speaker 1: to go down the route of us suppose stand under
[37:00] Speaker 1: oem of just spend you know, tens of millions, hundreds
[37:04] Speaker 1: of millions of dollars on advertising because we won't cut through.
[37:09] Speaker 1: You know, I think we've got to do it differently.
[37:12] Speaker 1: We've got to kind of find a way to punch
[37:13] Speaker 1: above our weight and we'll never make any money.
[37:17] Speaker 5: And we're here to do that, right.
[37:19] Speaker 1: This is not just about a nice story and a
[37:22] Speaker 1: great car. We're here to make a commercial.
[37:25] Speaker 5: Success of this.
[37:26] Speaker 1: So our ideas are much more about how do we
[37:30] Speaker 1: punch above our weight, right, So that's about our tone
[37:32] Speaker 1: of voice. It's about getting out there telling the story,
[37:36] Speaker 1: being a little bit punchy sometimes.
[37:38] Speaker 5: You know.
[37:39] Speaker 1: We recently did an ad campaign with Defender right where
[37:42] Speaker 1: we kind of sort of really take on head on
[37:46] Speaker 1: the fact that there's been legal disputes and really kind
[37:49] Speaker 1: of really sought through that campaign also though, to highlight
[37:52] Speaker 1: the differences between our two vehicles, the ones that are
[37:54] Speaker 1: on the road today, not that we're on the road
[37:56] Speaker 1: twenty years ago. So trying to be have a bit
[37:59] Speaker 1: of fun with it maybe is the answer to that question.
[38:03] Speaker 2: Lynn. I think you went to school in Aberdeen, right, Scotland?
[38:07] Speaker 5: I did.
[38:08] Speaker 2: Yes, Did you grow up up in Aberdeen as well
[38:12] Speaker 2: or close by?
[38:15] Speaker 5: So?
[38:15] Speaker 1: I was born near Edinburgh, in the county next to Edinburgh,
[38:20] Speaker 1: moved to Aberdeenshire when I was ten, to this tiny,
[38:24] Speaker 1: tiny little town of you know, four thousand people, and
[38:29] Speaker 1: I grew up there until I went to school. So yeah,
[38:34] Speaker 1: great memories of both places.
[38:36] Speaker 5: Love Scotland.
[38:37] Speaker 1: Still get home as often as I can, but yeah,
[38:40] Speaker 1: it's been a long time since I've lived there.
[38:41] Speaker 2: I don't miss the weather, well, I bet you know.
[38:44] Speaker 2: The reason I ask is because I'm actually in Las
[38:46] Speaker 2: Vegas right now with my niece who lives in She's Scottish,
[38:50] Speaker 2: she lives in Aberdeen, and you know, it's an oil
[38:56] Speaker 2: town in a way. I mean, the oil industry is
[38:58] Speaker 2: huge there, of course. You know, I'm just curious if
[39:01] Speaker 2: you have any words of wisdom for kids, teenagers who
[39:06] Speaker 2: are from Aberdeen that you know, maybe making their way
[39:10] Speaker 2: out into the world. Any any words of wisdom.
[39:14] Speaker 1: Oh, I love that, Hannah, Absolutely love that question, and
[39:16] Speaker 1: I love that you're You're with your your Scottish niece
[39:19] Speaker 1: from Aberdeen.
[39:19] Speaker 5: That's incredible, you.
[39:21] Speaker 1: Know, it's kind of it's yeah, it's a pretty small
[39:24] Speaker 1: part of Scotland, but you're right, it's actually got such
[39:27] Speaker 1: a rich industrial past and I think that that you know,
[39:30] Speaker 1: certainly used to give massive opportunity to get into an
[39:35] Speaker 1: industry that too q around the world, which is exactly
[39:38] Speaker 1: what I did. And I think that's probably slightly changed
[39:41] Speaker 1: days today because you know, fossil fuels are are are
[39:44] Speaker 1: more difficult proposition from an industry perspective, and our government
[39:49] Speaker 1: at the woman doesn't particularly want them anymore. So Aberdeen
[39:52] Speaker 1: is is definitely not the place that it was. But
[39:55] Speaker 1: I think that your your your niece has got the
[39:58] Speaker 1: world at her feet and it is her oyster whatever
[40:01] Speaker 1: she wants to do. And I think we live in
[40:02] Speaker 1: a world today where the opportunities are endless in a way,
[40:07] Speaker 1: and if I can, you know, get out of Aberdeen
[40:10] Speaker 1: and come and run a car company, then there's hope
[40:12] Speaker 1: for everyone.
[40:14] Speaker 2: Well I love that.
[40:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you've done very well.
[40:16] Speaker 3: So I think maybe maybe Hannah you can connect them
[40:20] Speaker 3: and they can and she can get some advice from Lynn. Hey,
[40:24] Speaker 3: I wanted just to finally ask about the pub. I
[40:28] Speaker 3: feel like the vehicle maybe has made the pub even
[40:33] Speaker 3: more famous. There's only room for like four or five
[40:36] Speaker 3: people in that pub. I've been to it a few
[40:38] Speaker 3: times off the groven Or Crescent there in bell Gravia.
[40:42] Speaker 3: Have you been in there? I mean, it's such a
[40:44] Speaker 3: cool little pub and it's so fun that it inspired
[40:48] Speaker 3: the name of this rugged you know, globally sold off
[40:52] Speaker 3: road vehicle.
[40:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's actually added to the story more than
[40:56] Speaker 1: ever night because two years ago we bought the pub.
[40:59] Speaker 4: Matt, I did not know that.
[41:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, such an integral part of the story, right, you know,
[41:07] Speaker 1: it's it's it's really you know, it's kind of it's
[41:10] Speaker 1: folklore for us now because it's it really is the
[41:13] Speaker 1: start of something that's become very big and impactful and
[41:16] Speaker 1: important in our lives. So, yeah, I'm in the the
[41:19] Speaker 1: Grenadier reasonably often. Tony the landlord is wonderful, will have
[41:24] Speaker 1: his chat to you, and you know, poor you a
[41:27] Speaker 1: really decent pint. So it's a fabulous little pub. But yeah,
[41:30] Speaker 1: we we kind of decided that it's it's part of
[41:33] Speaker 1: our story and we should make sure that it stays
[41:36] Speaker 1: the way it is.
[41:37] Speaker 2: Do you have gym in the pub these days?
[41:42] Speaker 1: I mean, Jim is a very busy man, as you
[41:44] Speaker 1: can imagine, Hannah, and I think when he's in London
[41:47] Speaker 1: he loves to to grab a drink in the Grandeer.
[41:50] Speaker 1: But yeah, he's he's pretty busy. I couldn't possibly know
[41:53] Speaker 1: how often he's in the Granadier.
[41:55] Speaker 3: But do you have Grenadier owners from all over Europe
[41:59] Speaker 3: like making pilgrimage to the pub?
[42:01] Speaker 4: Do you see the other vehicles pulled up outside there?
[42:05] Speaker 6: Yes?
[42:06] Speaker 1: And quite often as well, you know if you know,
[42:10] Speaker 1: because the whole team spends time in there as well, right,
[42:13] Speaker 1: and you know, we're all like very good at running
[42:15] Speaker 1: around with branded kit on that's got and you. Quite
[42:18] Speaker 1: a lot of our customers do as well. So I've
[42:20] Speaker 1: had people come up to me in the pub that
[42:22] Speaker 1: have kind of sort of, you know, either recognized me
[42:24] Speaker 1: or recognized because I've been waiting in any sort of
[42:27] Speaker 1: motive piece of kit and they've come over to say hello,
[42:29] Speaker 1: and who are you because I'm a Grandier owner. So yeah,
[42:33] Speaker 1: I think it has become a bit of a pilgrimage
[42:36] Speaker 1: and that's a lovely part of the story. So cool.
[42:40] Speaker 2: I love that. Thank you for taking the timeline. It's
[42:43] Speaker 2: really great to talk with you. We hope you come
[42:45] Speaker 2: back and talk to us more.
[42:47] Speaker 1: Yes, I really appreciate the opportunity as well. Guys love
[42:50] Speaker 1: the fact that you have been driving the car, Hannah,
[42:53] Speaker 1: and we must get you in one.
[42:54] Speaker 4: Matt, I'm looking forward to it.
[42:55] Speaker 3: I know I know a guy who has one, so
[42:59] Speaker 3: I'm gonna hopefully get a chance soon. By the way,
[43:01] Speaker 3: if you ever get into New York or next time
[43:05] Speaker 3: you're in New York, I'd love to have you on
[43:06] Speaker 3: my television show.
[43:08] Speaker 1: Well, look, that would be fab I'm in New York
[43:11] Speaker 1: fairly recently, but I'll tell you what I'll do, Mat,
[43:12] Speaker 1: I'll turn up with a lone grenadier for you so
[43:15] Speaker 1: that you can get one.
[43:15] Speaker 5: You don't need to borrow one from your mate.
[43:17] Speaker 6: Thanks so much, big fan.
[43:27] Speaker 2: Love that she's from Scotland because, like I said, I've
[43:30] Speaker 2: literally been around a young Scottish lass for the past
[43:34] Speaker 2: week and they're just delightful.
[43:37] Speaker 4: I also feel like it's a perfect place for this vehicle.
[43:39] Speaker 3: I mean, I know I said Africa is a spiritual home,
[43:41] Speaker 3: but think about like skyfall, right, I know this is
[43:46] Speaker 3: a truck that needs to be driven across the highlands.
[43:50] Speaker 2: Scottish Highland's wearing a kilt, yes, and like eating magis
[43:54] Speaker 2: and playing bag pipes all at the same time, I.
[43:57] Speaker 4: Should wear a kilt. More off, does Magnus ever wear
[43:59] Speaker 4: a kilt?
[44:00] Speaker 2: Well, no, he's not Scottish. You know, there's quite a
[44:03] Speaker 2: I've been getting a real download on the history of
[44:06] Speaker 2: Scotland in England and no he does not wear a kilt.
[44:10] Speaker 2: But apparently a lot of the young kids do in Scotland,
[44:14] Speaker 2: like for school dances and for formals. Even like the
[44:17] Speaker 2: young the young boys, like teenage boys, will wear a kilt.
[44:21] Speaker 3: Yeah, I would wear a kilt on a regular basis
[44:23] Speaker 3: if I were Scottish.
[44:25] Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like if you're not Scottish, it's tough
[44:28] Speaker 4: to pull it off.
[44:30] Speaker 2: Correct.
[44:30] Speaker 4: Just a casual kilt.
[44:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, a casual kilt. That's a hard hard line to walk.
[44:36] Speaker 4: But yeah, So you're in Vegas with Magnus.
[44:41] Speaker 2: With Magnus and my mother in law and my niece.
[44:44] Speaker 2: We just took a little mini vacation here. My niece
[44:48] Speaker 2: has never been, so she's visiting. And also, did I
[44:52] Speaker 2: tell you that we just bought a new Rolls Royce. Yeah, cheap, Yes,
[44:59] Speaker 2: that's the excite. It's a it's a silver Spur seventy
[45:02] Speaker 2: two two tone blackened sort of a claret. They call
[45:05] Speaker 2: it regal red, but it's more of a burgundy claret color.
[45:08] Speaker 4: So how many Rolls Royce is do you do you
[45:11] Speaker 4: guys own?
[45:12] Speaker 1: Now?
[45:12] Speaker 2: This is number four? There Again, I have to say
[45:15] Speaker 2: they are really they're very, very inexpensive vehicles. But this
[45:21] Speaker 2: is a fun one. And so far, I mean, each
[45:25] Speaker 2: of the three previous has broken down on the first drive.
[45:29] Speaker 2: This one has did not break down on the first drive.
[45:31] Speaker 2: So we're already ahead. Yes, you know, it's only up
[45:34] Speaker 2: from here, only down from here.
[45:36] Speaker 6: Really.
[45:36] Speaker 3: I was going to say they may be inexpensive to buy,
[45:39] Speaker 3: but I imagine that the maintenance can get pretty pricey.
[45:43] Speaker 2: It depends, it depends. This Actually, this one was a
[45:47] Speaker 2: two owner car. The people who we bought it from
[45:51] Speaker 2: had owned it for twenty seven years, so it has
[45:54] Speaker 2: been cared for, not driven a lot. So it needs
[45:58] Speaker 2: a real shakedown and sort of a run through by
[46:01] Speaker 2: our mechanic, but cared for. So that's that's nice and appearent.
[46:06] Speaker 2: It appears to be full, full, full original. We haven't
[46:10] Speaker 2: seen any sort of painting touch ups or weird things
[46:14] Speaker 2: like that, so I'll keep you posted on that.
[46:17] Speaker 3: Your white whale seems to be the Rolls Royce Camarg. Right,
[46:20] Speaker 3: you've been after that and you still didn't on number four,
[46:23] Speaker 3: you still haven't gotten one.
[46:25] Speaker 2: No, the problem with the camarg is they tend to
[46:27] Speaker 2: be more expensive. That's the that's the difference. They're a
[46:30] Speaker 2: lot rarer than the Silver Shadow is actually the most
[46:35] Speaker 2: the most produced Rolls Royce up from the era. They
[46:39] Speaker 2: made over thirty thousand of them, so they are rather common.
[46:44] Speaker 2: The Camarg is a lot rarer, and I don't I
[46:47] Speaker 2: don't want to quote a number a bit but they're
[46:49] Speaker 2: quite a bit rare, so yeah, more expensive, and so
[46:53] Speaker 2: it's just harder to like pull the trigger on something
[46:56] Speaker 2: that's a lot more money. You know, Yes, well you're
[46:59] Speaker 2: getting so if you're getting something soon, right.
[47:01] Speaker 4: That's right.
[47:02] Speaker 3: My wife went out of town for a couple of weeks,
[47:04] Speaker 3: so I bought a Harley Davidson Fat Boss. As you do, yes,
[47:10] Speaker 3: so I'm gonna go down. I bought it in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
[47:14] Speaker 3: They don't make the Fat Bob anymore. They stopped making
[47:17] Speaker 3: it in twenty twenty three, which is one of the
[47:20] Speaker 3: reasons that I wanted to get it sooner than later,
[47:23] Speaker 3: so I could find a nice low mileage but not
[47:26] Speaker 3: too low mileage, example, a one owner bike. It's already
[47:31] Speaker 3: had the air filter, the exhaust and the tune. I'm
[47:37] Speaker 3: not sure if it has a cam yet, but I
[47:39] Speaker 3: want to put in my own cam, so I don't
[47:40] Speaker 3: really care about it.
[47:41] Speaker 4: It is a twenty twenty three.
[47:43] Speaker 3: It's a twenty three right bike, so anyway, But the
[47:48] Speaker 3: thing is, I have to be at a graduation. My
[47:50] Speaker 3: nephew's graduating from Dickinson on Saturday and Sunday, so I'm
[47:55] Speaker 3: gonna fly out of here like right away and land
[48:01] Speaker 3: in DC around three o'clock, and then.
[48:04] Speaker 4: I guess I'll get there by four or five.
[48:07] Speaker 3: And then i'll drive straight back and hopefully get back
[48:10] Speaker 3: around midnight New York through the night. But it's not
[48:15] Speaker 3: so bad like that, that in itself isn't a problem.
[48:18] Speaker 4: It's supposed to.
[48:19] Speaker 3: I'm supposed to run through thunderstorms a lot of the way,
[48:23] Speaker 3: but I have a rain suit, so you know.
[48:27] Speaker 4: Nonetheless, I'm pretty excited.
[48:29] Speaker 2: That's really cool. That'll be a fun adventure.
[48:32] Speaker 4: Absolutely.
[48:34] Speaker 3: I also spent the week driving a Subaru Forester, which
[48:39] Speaker 3: I didn't think was going to be terribly exciting, and
[48:41] Speaker 3: guess what, it wasn't terribly exciting.
[48:45] Speaker 2: However, I didn't get any excited text from you about
[48:48] Speaker 2: the forest.
[48:49] Speaker 3: No, there was nothing exciting about it. But I will
[48:52] Speaker 3: say that the vehicle is sturdy. The Boxer motor is
[48:59] Speaker 3: not strong, but it's not annoying. And the price is low.
[49:05] Speaker 3: So I had like the most kitted out, absolute top
[49:09] Speaker 3: of the line version with every option, and it was
[49:12] Speaker 3: still only forty three grand, which in today's world is
[49:16] Speaker 3: really good for a full sized station wagon. So I
[49:20] Speaker 3: went to the beach with it last weekend with my
[49:23] Speaker 3: mom and my and my two daughters and a dog
[49:27] Speaker 3: and all of our stuff.
[49:28] Speaker 4: Everything fit.
[49:30] Speaker 3: And then my mom, who's not bought a car that
[49:33] Speaker 3: isn't Evolvo since the nineteen seventies, has decided she's going
[49:37] Speaker 3: to pick one up herself.
[49:39] Speaker 4: Oh so they made a sale.
[49:41] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I've too bad. You can't take a
[49:44] Speaker 2: commission on that, because you did the work.
[49:46] Speaker 3: It would be a very small commission, you know. I mean,
[49:49] Speaker 3: I think it's pretty cool that they're still making that.
[49:53] Speaker 3: Some companies are still making relatively affordable vehicles, like I
[49:57] Speaker 3: had I interviewed the CEO of Slate on my television show,
[50:03] Speaker 3: which is the new Amazon backed electric pickup truck maker.
[50:09] Speaker 3: They're gonna sell those for like twenty five grand I think,
[50:12] Speaker 3: out of the box, and then you can make it
[50:14] Speaker 3: into a five seater or a fastback or whatever you want.
[50:18] Speaker 3: But you know, there's the Ford has the Maverick, Like
[50:22] Speaker 3: there are still some inexpensive vehicles, and I think that's
[50:26] Speaker 3: really important. Otherwise you don't get kids into the market.
[50:30] Speaker 3: You don't get kids into the hobby.
[50:32] Speaker 2: Are we having the see of Slate?
[50:34] Speaker 4: Come on, she's gonna join us.
[50:36] Speaker 2: Yes, right, cool, cool cool, And I love that mentality.
[50:41] Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think things have to be expensive
[50:44] Speaker 2: to be special. I never have. Those two things are
[50:47] Speaker 2: two separate indicators.
[50:49] Speaker 3: No, I always you know, and I always think people
[50:53] Speaker 3: can buy used and should buy used stuff. And when
[50:56] Speaker 3: I talk to Harley about you know, the starter, Harley,
[50:59] Speaker 3: everyone come playing is that they don't have a bike
[51:01] Speaker 3: that's you know, seven thousand or six thousand dollars, and
[51:05] Speaker 3: they always say, we have a starter, Harley.
[51:07] Speaker 4: It's called the used sportster.
[51:09] Speaker 3: And that's the one that kids, you know, people nevitally,
[51:12] Speaker 3: that's their first if they're yeah, if they get into
[51:15] Speaker 3: it young, that's their first purchase. And not only is
[51:18] Speaker 3: it good because they haven't wasted money if they don't
[51:20] Speaker 3: like it or wasted too much money, and they're not
[51:23] Speaker 3: buying too much bike for themselves. You know, it's it's
[51:26] Speaker 3: got I don't know, sixty horse power, but I think
[51:29] Speaker 3: it's it's really important that you have this low cost
[51:33] Speaker 3: entry point for anything for people to get into it.
[51:37] Speaker 3: And that's true of cars as well, even though they're
[51:39] Speaker 3: of course an appliance and utility.
[51:41] Speaker 2: For most people completely. And I also think it's a
[51:46] Speaker 2: nice reference point for somewhere to go. You know, it's
[51:50] Speaker 2: better to it's better to aspire to other things. You know,
[51:55] Speaker 2: if you're coming in at a low price point, it
[51:57] Speaker 2: makes you appreciate and understand the value of the thing,
[52:02] Speaker 2: and then from there you can go elsewhere if you want.
[52:04] Speaker 3: But yeah, what have you got coming up? What are
[52:09] Speaker 3: you driving home? By the way, how did you get
[52:10] Speaker 3: to Vegas?
[52:11] Speaker 2: Oh? Great question, I will be driving home. And did
[52:16] Speaker 2: drive the twenty twenty five EQS four fifty sedan, and
[52:20] Speaker 2: this was a bit of a you know, I was
[52:22] Speaker 2: a little bit worried that wasn't going to make it
[52:24] Speaker 2: from Vegas. It's electric, they said that. The range when
[52:29] Speaker 2: I got the car, the range said five hundred and
[52:31] Speaker 2: fourteen miles, which of course I don't believe. But actually
[52:36] Speaker 2: it made it. It made it with over one hundred
[52:39] Speaker 2: and ten miles to go left on the charge, so
[52:41] Speaker 2: I was very happy. I'll be driving that back the
[52:43] Speaker 2: hotel where I'm staying at, the Wind, which is a
[52:46] Speaker 2: really great hotel. It's not Vegas, it's the Wind is
[52:49] Speaker 2: the is the tagline, which I kind of like. But
[52:51] Speaker 2: they've been really helpful charging it overnight and yeh, so
[52:56] Speaker 2: I'll be driving that back very comfortable ac works, which
[52:58] Speaker 2: is very important.
[52:59] Speaker 3: Did you see the message we got from down about his.
[53:03] Speaker 4: Trip, Yes?
[53:04] Speaker 2: I did.
[53:05] Speaker 3: Where was he was like going to Bozemon right in
[53:07] Speaker 3: a tesla or somewhere like that, and he stated he
[53:11] Speaker 3: want to do well, Yeah, he said I should. He well,
[53:14] Speaker 3: he said, I should drive the g Wagon to Ohio
[53:18] Speaker 3: to see what it's like to go on a longer
[53:20] Speaker 3: trip with an electric vehicle. And frankly, I've I've I've
[53:24] Speaker 3: already had that experience in Germany. I drove the Audi
[53:28] Speaker 3: e Tron from Berlin to Frankfurt and it took eight hours,
[53:31] Speaker 3: a trip that takes me like four and a half
[53:33] Speaker 3: in a nine to eleven. But he said he drove
[53:38] Speaker 3: to somewhere in Montana and then the hotel didn't have
[53:41] Speaker 3: any way to charge the car except for running an
[53:44] Speaker 3: extension cord out of his room like the regular one
[53:47] Speaker 3: hundred and ten volt outlet, and so they couldn't go
[53:50] Speaker 3: to Yellowstone because they didn't have enough electricity.
[53:53] Speaker 2: That a huge bummer, and huge bummer, and I had
[53:57] Speaker 2: that that unknown factor of even if we make it
[54:01] Speaker 2: to our destination, what will the charging options. Be at
[54:05] Speaker 2: the destination does create quite a lot of anxiety. So
[54:09] Speaker 2: you know, the only plug I can say is stay
[54:11] Speaker 2: at the wind. The chargers work. It's totally flawless, no
[54:15] Speaker 2: issue you signed. You do have to sign a release
[54:18] Speaker 2: for him that lets the the guys charge it for you.
[54:22] Speaker 2: I haven't got the bill yet, so I don't know
[54:23] Speaker 2: how much the charging will have cost. But yeah, that
[54:28] Speaker 2: would be the hugest bummer ever.
[54:30] Speaker 4: Missing on a Yellowstone because of your Tesla. I have
[54:33] Speaker 4: to think that's changed even into Montana.
[54:36] Speaker 2: Let's hope.
[54:37] Speaker 4: I have to like it's changing. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
[54:42] Speaker 6: All right.
[54:42] Speaker 4: Anyway, Well, I hope you have a great trip home.
[54:45] Speaker 4: That's a very luxurious chariot, so enjoy that.
[54:49] Speaker 3: I'm about to go turn in this Subaru for a
[54:53] Speaker 3: Chevy Blazer EV. So I'm going to get back on
[54:57] Speaker 3: the TV. Yeah, I really am on the EV train.
[55:00] Speaker 3: I got a lot coming up of electric vehicles.
[55:03] Speaker 2: No one can say that you don't drive evs.
[55:06] Speaker 1: You've been.
[55:08] Speaker 3: I'm finding them quite enjoyable for the most part. It's
[55:12] Speaker 3: just those practical concerns that may hold me back. But
[55:18] Speaker 3: I've seen in the case of a Mercedes G five eighty.
[55:21] Speaker 3: Nothing would hold me back beyond the price tag.
[55:26] Speaker 4: All Right, I'm Matt Miller
[55:28] Speaker 2: I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is Bloomberg.
