[0:02] Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, podcasts, radio news. I'm Matt Miller and
[0:10] Speaker 1: I'm Hanna Elliott and this is Hot Proceiver. Matt am
[0:21] Speaker 1: I saying shorts.
[0:24] Speaker 2: Saw me wearing shorts. I don't want anyone to see that.
[0:26] Speaker 1: This is the first time. I mean, it was just
[0:28] Speaker 1: just a glimpse, just a glimpse, but I feel like
[0:31] Speaker 1: I caught a flash of some shorts, short pantaloons.
[0:35] Speaker 2: It's super appropriate for work. Obviously. I'm even wearing flip cloves,
[0:40] Speaker 2: which I would know.
[0:41] Speaker 1: Please know, I don't need to see that. That's going
[0:43] Speaker 1: too far. That's an HR violation.
[0:46] Speaker 2: Finally, do you know that I have I don't wear
[0:49] Speaker 2: shorts much in public because I have a huge skin
[0:52] Speaker 2: graft on my leg.
[0:54] Speaker 1: Is that from your motorcycle accident?
[0:56] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[0:57] Speaker 1: I did not know that.
[0:59] Speaker 2: When I got it. I got hit by a truck
[1:02] Speaker 2: basically that crossed over the double yellow line and it
[1:04] Speaker 2: hit me not head on, but almost just to the side,
[1:08] Speaker 2: and so my left leg was crushed between the the
[1:12] Speaker 2: truck and which ironically was a dodge, and my motorcycle,
[1:18] Speaker 2: and that caused so much swelling that they had to
[1:21] Speaker 2: open up my leg in a few places. In what's
[1:23] Speaker 2: called a fasciotomy, and I had to leave it like
[1:26] Speaker 2: open and swollen for a month in the hospital before
[1:29] Speaker 2: they closed it. And when they did close it, they
[1:31] Speaker 2: didn't have enough skin, so they had to take a
[1:32] Speaker 2: big patch of skin basically from my upper thigh and
[1:38] Speaker 2: close it on. So now I have basically what it
[1:41] Speaker 2: looked like a split top loaf of bread on my calf. Whoa,
[1:47] Speaker 2: And I'm thinking about getting it tattooed into a shark.
[1:50] Speaker 1: I was just gonna say it sounds like a pertile
[1:53] Speaker 1: brown for some ink.
[1:55] Speaker 2: It would be perfect, but I'm I think it would
[1:57] Speaker 2: hurt a lot.
[1:58] Speaker 1: It definitely like that would definitely are definitely Wow. That
[2:03] Speaker 1: seems extensive. I had no idea, no wonder, no wonder.
[2:05] Speaker 1: You're always in pants at the office. I knew it
[2:08] Speaker 1: was suspicious. Yes, so you're in Italy. You've been there
[2:14] Speaker 1: for a minute. Sounds like I'm in Italy.
[2:17] Speaker 2: It's been it's obviously, it's amazing. We're in the countryside
[2:22] Speaker 2: outside of Sienna and Tuscany. And but I rented I
[2:27] Speaker 2: think I'm not sure if I rented the right car
[2:29] Speaker 2: for the whole situation. I desperately wanted to get a
[2:33] Speaker 2: big van. And I was talking to a lady at
[2:36] Speaker 2: Hurts and I was like, you know, for me, a
[2:39] Speaker 2: van screams like family vacation. And when my parents took
[2:42] Speaker 2: us for the first time to Europe, they rented a
[2:44] Speaker 2: big white you know, like Mercedes Sprinter or I don't
[2:49] Speaker 2: know what for France that it could have been. And
[2:53] Speaker 2: it was like a almost like a school bus van.
[2:56] Speaker 2: It wasn't fancy, and we had a great time in it.
[2:59] Speaker 2: So I want to do the same thing, but the
[3:01] Speaker 2: Hurts lady talked.
[3:02] Speaker 1: Me out of it into what.
[3:06] Speaker 2: Well, So since she talked me out of it, I
[3:09] Speaker 2: looked and I saw I looked at sixth because there
[3:12] Speaker 2: wasn't anything.
[3:13] Speaker 1: Yes, I've used six yeah.
[3:15] Speaker 2: And I love they have like really nice cars.
[3:18] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[3:18] Speaker 2: So I saw that they had Audi a six Avant
[3:22] Speaker 2: that was fully electric, and I thought, let me try
[3:24] Speaker 2: this because it has four hundred like massive amount of range,
[3:28] Speaker 2: four hundred and twenty miles of range. And I love,
[3:32] Speaker 2: you know, a wagon and the A six you know looks,
[3:37] Speaker 2: you know, it looks like you're doing well if you're.
[3:39] Speaker 1: Driving six and what we want.
[3:42] Speaker 2: Exactly, you know. And so but I went to pick
[3:46] Speaker 2: it up and they said, here's your BMW I five
[3:52] Speaker 2: and I was like, that's not the same thing. I mean,
[3:56] Speaker 2: it's the forty. So it wasn't even the if it
[3:58] Speaker 2: was the fifty or the sixty, maybe, but it had
[4:00] Speaker 2: far less range and you know.
[4:04] Speaker 1: So this was a bit of a bait and switch exactly.
[4:07] Speaker 2: So then they said, how about an IX because the
[4:10] Speaker 2: Audi A six isn't toy charged. Sure, so I have
[4:14] Speaker 2: enjoyed the I X in the past. It just doesn't
[4:17] Speaker 2: have the same kind of rugged vacation feeling.
[4:20] Speaker 1: It doesn't have a gravitas I remember, Yeah.
[4:24] Speaker 2: It to me, the I X, it seems like it
[4:27] Speaker 2: was a concept car that they were like, all right,
[4:29] Speaker 2: let's just release it as well.
[4:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, so we're already at this far down the road.
[4:34] Speaker 1: I think I remember the same thing, and I know
[4:37] Speaker 1: I reviewed it. It was like it was good, but
[4:39] Speaker 1: it doesn't. It's just like something's missing.
[4:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's weird. I mean, the doors are so light,
[4:48] Speaker 2: and I get that the whole thing is a carbon
[4:50] Speaker 2: fiber monocoque shell and so it's technologically advanced, and that's
[4:55] Speaker 2: great for an electric car you want to light, but
[4:57] Speaker 2: when you close it, it feels like a toy, or it
[4:59] Speaker 2: feel like they weren't finished, you know.
[5:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I get it. I get it. Well, how
[5:05] Speaker 1: has the range been for you while you're driving around Italy?
[5:08] Speaker 2: The range has been really good. It started at five
[5:11] Speaker 2: hundred and thirty one kilometers and we got here about
[5:16] Speaker 2: three hundred kilometers away, and I was only three thirty down.
[5:20] Speaker 1: So now it's just two hundred.
[5:22] Speaker 2: Obviously I drive like a bat out of hell, but.
[5:25] Speaker 1: I would hope nothing less. Where are you charging it?
[5:28] Speaker 1: That's the way.
[5:29] Speaker 2: That's a problem. So now we've gotten to this remote
[5:33] Speaker 2: villa in Tuscany.
[5:34] Speaker 1: Which is the point of going to Tuscany. You go,
[5:37] Speaker 1: you want a remote.
[5:37] Speaker 2: Villa exactly, and there's no place to charge it here.
[5:41] Speaker 2: So when we go into town. We're going to go
[5:43] Speaker 2: into town tonight to watch this this mini Paleo so
[5:47] Speaker 2: little horse race or the beginning of the ceremonies for it.
[5:51] Speaker 2: And I'm going to hope to find an electric charger
[5:54] Speaker 2: while we're in town that I can a use to
[5:58] Speaker 2: charge the car. But also in Europe, the charger parking
[6:01] Speaker 2: spots are kind of a cheat code. Since nobody else
[6:03] Speaker 2: has an electric car, nobody can park there, so that's
[6:06] Speaker 2: the only trace that's open.
[6:10] Speaker 1: Sounds good. That is a good cheat code. Actually you
[6:14] Speaker 1: get better parking that way. We should we should really
[6:17] Speaker 1: talk about I feel like there's so much going on
[6:20] Speaker 1: in the car well. Goodwood is happening this weekend. Obviously
[6:23] Speaker 1: you and I are not at Goodwood, but there's a
[6:25] Speaker 1: lot of car stuff happening.
[6:27] Speaker 2: That's a huge bummer that we're not there, that neither
[6:29] Speaker 2: one of us is there.
[6:31] Speaker 1: I know you're there, honestly, and you know I was
[6:36] Speaker 1: just in the UK this entire week. I've just returned
[6:39] Speaker 1: from being in England, but decided not to stay over
[6:43] Speaker 1: honestly because I didn't need to. It's look Goodwood is
[6:49] Speaker 1: is great. I think everyone should go at least once.
[6:52] Speaker 1: I've been a couple of times. It's kind of the
[6:54] Speaker 1: same every year. It's not my favorite event. There's no
[7:00] Speaker 1: real huge news. It's really good for netwik working, and
[7:05] Speaker 1: it's great for car fans, and it's fun. Also, the
[7:09] Speaker 1: logistics are really challenging and complicated. It's tough to find
[7:14] Speaker 1: places to stay and park. Speaking of parking, so I
[7:18] Speaker 1: don't know, I just decided not to go. I didn't
[7:20] Speaker 1: want to be gone that long.
[7:21] Speaker 2: But you were in England. I saw, was you driving
[7:24] Speaker 2: a Defender, an old defender?
[7:27] Speaker 1: Sadly that was not my car? Oh, I see that
[7:30] Speaker 1: was that was a I wished I was driving a Defender. No,
[7:33] Speaker 1: I was driving in a Honda Jazz visiting all the
[7:37] Speaker 1: stately homes.
[7:38] Speaker 2: Saw that too, I saw the Honda steering wheel. Yeah,
[7:41] Speaker 2: it being a tiny one right.
[7:43] Speaker 1: Being ferried around by an eighty one year old woman
[7:46] Speaker 1: for days. It was great and I and it was
[7:49] Speaker 1: great and she's a great driver. I have to say too.
[7:52] Speaker 1: That was my mother in law, by the way, So
[7:56] Speaker 1: what do you think about that little car?
[7:58] Speaker 2: And we should talk at some point, not because I
[8:00] Speaker 2: haven't done any research about tiny little cars, because we
[8:03] Speaker 2: both love the Fiat five hundred. Yes, and the Honda
[8:06] Speaker 2: Jazz is I feel like maybe even smaller.
[8:09] Speaker 1: I think it's comparable. It's pretty small, honestly. By the
[8:12] Speaker 1: end of the week, and you know, I'm I'm around
[8:15] Speaker 1: six feet in my heels. I was in pain the
[8:21] Speaker 1: back seat of that car. The seats are about as
[8:24] Speaker 1: thick as cardboard, and they don't necessarily recline that they're
[8:28] Speaker 1: not especially supportive in your lumber region. So it was
[8:35] Speaker 1: by the end of it, Yeah, it felt really small.
[8:37] Speaker 1: But all that to say, I really like small cars
[8:40] Speaker 1: and they really make sense on those tiny roads in Yorkshire,
[8:43] Speaker 1: which are about one and a half lanes wide, you know,
[8:47] Speaker 1: and you really kind of hold your breath when you
[8:51] Speaker 1: pass people, if you pass people, And I really found
[8:55] Speaker 1: that the Brits kind of just drive in the middle
[8:57] Speaker 1: of the road up there because the road's so small anyway,
[9:00] Speaker 1: you know, it's they don't drive on the right or
[9:02] Speaker 1: the left, they just drive in the middle.
[9:05] Speaker 2: You're an eighty one year old woman, it's a great car, like.
[9:08] Speaker 1: It's a great yes for her. She loves it. It's
[9:11] Speaker 1: perfect for her. Harry, her boyfriend, who is ninety two
[9:16] Speaker 1: or ninety three, he has a Kia station Wagon that
[9:23] Speaker 1: he still drives. And in fact he met us at
[9:26] Speaker 1: the pub one night and drove himself home and actually,
[9:31] Speaker 1: you know, we're all kind of holding our breath evaluating
[9:34] Speaker 1: him as he pulls out from the parking lot. I
[9:37] Speaker 1: think he's solid. I actually think he's doing a good job.
[9:40] Speaker 2: After like a three or four pints.
[9:43] Speaker 1: No, no, he had a half a pint. He had
[9:45] Speaker 1: a and this is on the record, he had a
[9:47] Speaker 1: half a point pint of some IPA and so he
[9:51] Speaker 1: was under the he was he was within his his
[9:54] Speaker 1: legal limits. And uh, ninety he's either ninety two or
[9:58] Speaker 1: ninety three, you know, a prince of a guy. He
[10:02] Speaker 1: was killing it and speaking of a state no what
[10:05] Speaker 1: a state car? I think they call the states. Yeah,
[10:09] Speaker 1: he was, he was doing great.
[10:11] Speaker 2: Well, that's fantastic. I hope I'm still driving when I'm ninety.
[10:14] Speaker 1: Three years Yeah, there was some I'm sure we may
[10:18] Speaker 1: get letters about this. I'd actually love to know what
[10:20] Speaker 1: our readers think about how you navigate when your parents
[10:25] Speaker 1: get to be in their eighties and still want to drive.
[10:29] Speaker 2: So I have that. I have the problem that my
[10:32] Speaker 2: dad's only seventy six but can tell me declined in
[10:38] Speaker 2: some senses of capability.
[10:42] Speaker 1: Mental or physical, like reaction times.
[10:44] Speaker 2: Well not physical. You know. He has decided that stop
[10:48] Speaker 2: signs don't apply to him, you know, and he literally
[10:54] Speaker 2: just breezes through them. So this is new behavior for him,
[11:00] Speaker 2: new behavior, and it's like a moral and legal problem
[11:04] Speaker 2: for my family because we are all We've taken the
[11:07] Speaker 2: keys away, we've literally hidden cars, you know, taken his
[11:11] Speaker 2: car and parts that other people's houses, and he frankly
[11:16] Speaker 2: shouldn't be driving anymore. But there's there's nothing you can do,
[11:21] Speaker 2: especially if the subject is a lawyer. She is still
[11:28] Speaker 2: you know, ready to wage a suit to stop someone
[11:31] Speaker 2: from driving, except for have a doctor demanded test. And
[11:35] Speaker 2: if you know, said lawyer passes that test because on
[11:38] Speaker 2: that day, for those minutes, he's paying great attention. You
[11:43] Speaker 2: can't tell a grown man or woman he or she
[11:48] Speaker 2: is not allowed to drive. And that is a problem
[11:51] Speaker 2: if you think, you know, because we're intimately associated with him,
[11:54] Speaker 2: we know he shouldn't be driving, but he refuses to
[11:59] Speaker 2: acknowledge that. And I think you should have to retest, yes,
[12:05] Speaker 2: you know, every few years or or whatever after your
[12:08] Speaker 2: seventy and.
[12:09] Speaker 1: Not just a written test, a physical driving test, is
[12:13] Speaker 1: what you're saying. Yeah, we talked about it, and I
[12:16] Speaker 1: think England may have some sort of mandatory testing. But
[12:22] Speaker 1: you're right. Sometimes people you can pass the test on
[12:26] Speaker 1: a given day and still not be really a peak
[12:31] Speaker 1: driving performance form. But you're right. It comes down to
[12:36] Speaker 1: like personal freedom. You can't tell someone who doesn't want
[12:42] Speaker 1: to give up their keys, you got to give up
[12:44] Speaker 1: the key. It's a freedom thing, I get it, you know.
[12:48] Speaker 1: And then of course, the other side is they're not
[12:50] Speaker 1: driving themselves. Who's going to drive them around?
[12:54] Speaker 2: Right?
[12:54] Speaker 1: Well?
[12:55] Speaker 2: Thankfully, you know, even in Grandville, Ohio, where I'm from,
[13:00] Speaker 2: there's a plethora of Uber. Oh that's good services. So
[13:05] Speaker 2: as you know, as I think in my dad's case,
[13:08] Speaker 2: at least, he's growing more and more aware of his
[13:11] Speaker 2: capabilities and incapabilities and has decided for the most part
[13:15] Speaker 2: to use the local It's not Uber, but you know
[13:17] Speaker 2: the town uh FAXI guy, Oh, that's good. But I'm
[13:23] Speaker 2: sure a lot of people base real problems with that.
[13:26] Speaker 1: I think it's a thing. I really think it's a thing.
[13:28] Speaker 1: It's interesting to think about. You know, it's tough. Do
[13:38] Speaker 1: you want to talk about Uh?
[13:39] Speaker 2: I want to talk about Remac?
[13:41] Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I was just going to say that speed record.
[13:44] Speaker 2: So I don't know anything about these cars. And the
[13:47] Speaker 2: only time and the only time I ever see anything
[13:50] Speaker 2: about REMAC is when I'm either reading stories that you've
[13:53] Speaker 2: written or looking at rob report or you know, or
[13:59] Speaker 2: it's usually some F one driver who's you know, bought
[14:04] Speaker 2: himself one, and those are I feel like it's only
[14:07] Speaker 2: retired F one drivers that are mate clients, Is that right?
[14:11] Speaker 1: No? I don't think that's wrong. In fact, I think
[14:14] Speaker 1: some of their first clients were were F one drivers.
[14:19] Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, like who can afford it?
[14:22] Speaker 1: And second of all, I feel like if you can
[14:24] Speaker 1: afford it, And Mate Remaka said this, a lot of
[14:27] Speaker 1: people really aren't looking for electric hypercars right now. I
[14:31] Speaker 1: mean the the Rimac Navara. Just to get everyone on
[14:34] Speaker 1: the same page. When I drove it a couple of
[14:38] Speaker 1: years ago, it was two point one million dollars. I
[14:40] Speaker 1: think I drove it in twenty twenty two. Two point
[14:43] Speaker 1: one million was the starting price. Thin that car had
[14:47] Speaker 1: about nineteen hundred horse power. They have said they're going
[14:51] Speaker 1: to make one hundred and fifty of them. Last year,
[14:54] Speaker 1: Mate told us they had sold fifty out of one
[14:57] Speaker 1: hundred and fifty. So it's a really high performance supercar,
[15:01] Speaker 1: all electric. And of course Rimat Group is partially owned
[15:06] Speaker 1: by Portia and Hyundai and a couple other investors, and
[15:10] Speaker 1: then also in turn owns Bugatti, so it's all connected.
[15:16] Speaker 1: And to answer your question again, Matt, and we talk
[15:18] Speaker 1: about this all the time, internal combustion seems to be
[15:25] Speaker 1: more alluring for people who are spending a lot of
[15:28] Speaker 1: money on cars than electric cars right now, all that
[15:32] Speaker 1: to say the Neva Are, which is the higher performance
[15:36] Speaker 1: version of the Nevara and has over two thousand horsepower.
[15:40] Speaker 1: It's a little bit more expensive. They're gonna make forty
[15:42] Speaker 1: of them. If they can sell forty. That car is
[15:46] Speaker 1: the car that just became the world's fastest production ev
[15:51] Speaker 1: Now we have to say production because there's another car
[15:54] Speaker 1: outside of Japan that was a prototype that is slightly
[15:57] Speaker 1: faster for top speeds called the Aspark Owl.
[16:02] Speaker 2: But so first of all, is the Navara the only
[16:07] Speaker 2: car Remac makes. Is that the only model.
[16:11] Speaker 1: I believe it's currently the only car they make. They
[16:14] Speaker 1: have said they're going to start making two seat autonomous robotaxis. Okay,
[16:20] Speaker 1: so there, Yes, they're working on things. And of course
[16:24] Speaker 1: Remac also supplies components, parts, battery technology to Peninferina, so
[16:32] Speaker 1: it supplies things to other automakers, and of course Remac
[16:36] Speaker 1: owns Bugatti, and we know what Bugatti makes. But in
[16:38] Speaker 1: terms of the Remac brand, the Navara is the current
[16:42] Speaker 1: only thing that they make. But again, Mate, as we know,
[16:46] Speaker 1: is kind of a petrol head. He had a record
[16:50] Speaker 1: setting BMW that he built. He actually does love combustion
[16:53] Speaker 1: as well, and whenever we talk with him, and we
[16:56] Speaker 1: did try to get in for this podcast, but it
[16:57] Speaker 1: was a little too last minute, but he does want
[16:59] Speaker 1: to come on. He always says, you know, whatever, the
[17:03] Speaker 1: whatever makes the most sense in terms of powertrain is
[17:05] Speaker 1: fine by him. He's not married to electric vehicles necessarily.
[17:10] Speaker 1: And one thing I really like about him is he's
[17:12] Speaker 1: pretty open about Yeah, I guess guess no one wanted
[17:16] Speaker 1: the Neva.
[17:17] Speaker 2: I mean IT'STI right, yes, yeah, so he's happy to
[17:23] Speaker 2: make twelve and sixteen cylinder motors. The one person I
[17:28] Speaker 2: do actually know who has a couple is Brian Miller,
[17:31] Speaker 2: which isn't fair because he owns Miller motor Cars and
[17:35] Speaker 2: there for saletis yeah, that's the only place. That's the
[17:39] Speaker 2: only time I've ever seen them, seen them in the flesh,
[17:42] Speaker 2: is when I'm with him looking at his inventory.
[17:45] Speaker 1: He should let you drive one of those.
[17:48] Speaker 2: I didn't think about asking, what, but you've driven one? Right?
[17:53] Speaker 1: Yes, it's incredible, It's it's it's on a whole other level,
[17:57] Speaker 1: for sure, incredible.
[17:59] Speaker 2: That's because the thing thing is, like most electric cars
[18:02] Speaker 2: are obviously, any Tesla owner that you talk to will
[18:04] Speaker 2: tell you I smoke people off the line all the time.
[18:06] Speaker 2: And even you know, this morning, I drove out to
[18:10] Speaker 2: the local co op to get some milk in this
[18:13] Speaker 2: ix and that is a family it's literally a family hauler,
[18:17] Speaker 2: you know. And it flies. So any electric car will fly,
[18:22] Speaker 2: but this must kind of flight.
[18:25] Speaker 1: I think there are certain levels. Let's I mean, let's
[18:27] Speaker 1: put it into perspective. The Tesla model s Plaid has
[18:31] Speaker 1: a top speed of two hundred miles an hour, so
[18:34] Speaker 1: the Rimac Nevara the R just set a record for
[18:39] Speaker 1: a top speed of two hundred and sixty eight miles
[18:41] Speaker 1: an hour with a zero to sixty time of under
[18:45] Speaker 1: two seconds. The zero to sixty on the Rimacnavara is
[18:49] Speaker 1: one point sixty six seconds. So again, like I think,
[18:54] Speaker 1: it's just it's a whole other level. Yeah, the Tesla
[18:58] Speaker 1: feels pretty fast, but that's like a many minivan compared to.
[19:04] Speaker 2: So basically in electric cars, zero to sixty for the
[19:09] Speaker 2: most part, when you get to those big power numbers
[19:11] Speaker 2: is only limited by your traction.
[19:13] Speaker 1: Totally, yeah, and totally.
[19:15] Speaker 2: It's so the next frontier for electric cars is top speed, yes,
[19:20] Speaker 2: which is where we're and that's pretty awesome.
[19:23] Speaker 1: It's pretty awesome. And you know what. The interesting thing though,
[19:26] Speaker 1: is combustion engine cars are still faster for a top
[19:32] Speaker 1: speed number, even though right, yeah, like the Bugatti, the
[19:37] Speaker 1: record setting Bugatti has a top speed of over three
[19:42] Speaker 1: hundred miles an hour, which is leaps and bounds. You know. Obviously,
[19:47] Speaker 1: whenever you talk to the people who drive these cars
[19:49] Speaker 1: for world records, they say it's exponentially every single mile
[19:54] Speaker 1: per hour that you add is it feels exponentially faster
[19:57] Speaker 1: the faster you go. And this Bugatti Sharon Super Sport
[20:01] Speaker 1: three hundred plus hit three hundred and four miles an
[20:06] Speaker 1: hour in twenty nineteen, so you know, that's a lot
[20:10] Speaker 1: more speed. And I know Koenig Seg and SSC also
[20:16] Speaker 1: have cars that are are still faster than Novera and
[20:21] Speaker 1: those are combustion engine cars. So you're right. I think
[20:25] Speaker 1: for EVS, top speed is really the next frontier.
[20:30] Speaker 2: We should actually have Andy Wallace on the.
[20:32] Speaker 1: I mean, oh my goodness, sure list.
[20:34] Speaker 2: While we're listing people that we should be talking to,
[20:36] Speaker 2: mante Remac obviously is one yes and fascinating. Because of that,
[20:40] Speaker 2: I'd love to know more about the structure of ownership
[20:43] Speaker 2: of his business and how it fits into Portia and Folkswagen.
[20:47] Speaker 2: But Andy Wallace is the one who drove that Bugatti
[20:51] Speaker 2: top speed and you know him as well, right, Yes.
[20:54] Speaker 1: He is a great interview We should definitely have him on.
[20:56] Speaker 1: He's really he's one of these guys that has done
[20:59] Speaker 1: something extraordinary, who is really humble and you could talk
[21:03] Speaker 1: to him and never, No, what do you got speed?
[21:08] Speaker 2: I mean to me, when I watched these top speed attempts,
[21:12] Speaker 2: it just seems so dangerous, I know, And I guess
[21:17] Speaker 2: with the Bugatti they do it on a track that
[21:20] Speaker 2: it's like a road track that just is a giant oval, right,
[21:24] Speaker 2: But other times people do it at the salt flats,
[21:26] Speaker 2: which I've never been to and I would love to visit.
[21:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, I have also never been.
[21:34] Speaker 2: I definitely go to the Bonneville Salt Flats, Canada's trip.
[21:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, let's do it, like, let's actually make a point
[21:41] Speaker 1: of it. You know, I know people are killed trying
[21:46] Speaker 1: to set speed records like this. There was a woman
[21:50] Speaker 1: who was killed in southern Oregon trying to trying to
[21:55] Speaker 1: set a four wheel land speed record who was killed
[21:58] Speaker 1: years ago. And yeah, it's super dangerous because the cars
[22:03] Speaker 1: can get airborne. For one, I think that's I mean,
[22:06] Speaker 1: any type of steering correction at that speed is like fatal.
[22:10] Speaker 1: Yeah right.
[22:12] Speaker 2: But also if you're going to go and we all,
[22:14] Speaker 2: as Joni Ernst reminded us, you know we're all going
[22:17] Speaker 2: to die, that's a good way to go, right.
[22:22] Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know. I mean I can't,
[22:25] Speaker 1: not for me, not.
[22:27] Speaker 2: For me over three hundred miles an hour. You surely,
[22:30] Speaker 2: surely you know it's like.
[22:32] Speaker 1: No, yeah, completely. You know who we should have come
[22:35] Speaker 1: on to talk about this is our friend from Goodyear
[22:40] Speaker 1: because it all comes down to tires too, doesn't it
[22:44] Speaker 1: Like the tires are the the limiting factor as well?
[22:49] Speaker 2: Yeah, fraction Mark Stewart. Mark Stewart also on the list
[22:52] Speaker 2: of people that we need to interview, and frankly it
[22:57] Speaker 2: could get too political. But Brian Miller also is a
[23:00] Speaker 2: good one.
[23:01] Speaker 1: You know, I don't know him, but I'd love to
[23:02] Speaker 1: know him. What do you mean when you say he
[23:04] Speaker 1: could get too political?
[23:06] Speaker 2: He has opinions and he is not afraid to share.
[23:10] Speaker 1: You love opinions.
[23:12] Speaker 2: No, it's great, it's great.
[23:14] Speaker 1: I mean what are what are his opinions?
[23:17] Speaker 2: And I will let's wait till he's on.
[23:19] Speaker 1: But you know, he can say it.
[23:20] Speaker 2: He can say his opinions, and he's had an incredibly
[23:23] Speaker 2: successful career selling cars to the wealthiest people.
[23:26] Speaker 1: Well uh huh oh, yeah, that that gives me a
[23:30] Speaker 1: hint about what his opinions might be.
[23:32] Speaker 2: But the cool thing is he and like he's older.
[23:35] Speaker 2: He's older than me at least so, but he has
[23:39] Speaker 2: fantastic taste in music, so he can talk to you
[23:43] Speaker 2: not only about you know, the newest Bugatti and who's
[23:47] Speaker 2: buying it, but also about you know, the Derek Trucks
[23:51] Speaker 2: band or the Alma Brothers. And he goes to.
[23:55] Speaker 1: See, I love that. And you know what, I like
[23:57] Speaker 1: people who have different opinions than me because it makes
[23:59] Speaker 1: me want to ask, oh, tell me more, why do
[24:02] Speaker 1: you think that? You know? And I'm going to get
[24:04] Speaker 1: on my soapbox for just a second. I have to say,
[24:07] Speaker 1: I think the proper response when someone has a different
[24:10] Speaker 1: opinion opinion to you is not to get angry, but
[24:13] Speaker 1: to ask why and say tell me more.
[24:16] Speaker 2: You know, well, most of us live in an echo chamber, right,
[24:21] Speaker 2: So someone asked me this morning what news sources I
[24:24] Speaker 2: listened to, and after I listed them, I thought, Oh,
[24:27] Speaker 2: that doesn't sound good because I'm not listening to any
[24:30] Speaker 2: other opinions, right, if I'm just listening to Blueberg and
[24:32] Speaker 2: the BBC and NPR. Yeah, I'm kind of doing myself
[24:37] Speaker 2: a disservice by not broadening my horizons a little bit.
[24:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, this is something I've I've actually been
[24:45] Speaker 1: talking to my own parents about. You know, let's have
[24:48] Speaker 1: a big variety in our media diet. Variety is important.
[24:53] Speaker 2: It's just like healthy walk with your parents, right, swap
[24:59] Speaker 2: are you are you? Are you on the same diet
[25:01] Speaker 2: as your parents? Oh? No, No, you benefit from you know,
[25:05] Speaker 2: swapping out a few for a week and they give
[25:10] Speaker 2: you a Fox News.
[25:11] Speaker 1: I'm going to say that I have a very healthy
[25:14] Speaker 1: media diet, and I I will say that I'm confident
[25:17] Speaker 1: I do. I read conservative opinions. I read liberal opinions.
[25:23] Speaker 1: I listened to a bunch of podcasts. I will say this.
[25:27] Speaker 1: I don't watch TV. I do not, and which is
[25:31] Speaker 1: ironic because I work for a news organization that is
[25:35] Speaker 1: a TV studio. But I don't.
[25:36] Speaker 2: I also don't watch TV.
[25:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's important. I read, I read print,
[25:42] Speaker 1: I read newspapers, I read magazines, I don't do the TV.
[25:46] Speaker 2: I guess I read the Wall Street Journal in New
[25:48] Speaker 2: York Times in the FT in addition to Bloomberg. Of
[25:51] Speaker 2: course that's pretty diverse, right, Yeah.
[25:55] Speaker 1: What about your local paper? Do you get?
[25:58] Speaker 2: Like a local paper? I read because my wife writes
[26:01] Speaker 2: for it a lot whenever she feels like, you know,
[26:07] Speaker 2: we shouldn't be spending eight million dollars to put turf
[26:10] Speaker 2: on the high school football field because it involves p
[26:13] Speaker 2: fasts or whatever. I don't know what that is, but
[26:16] Speaker 2: I know it's bad.
[26:16] Speaker 1: So we're again Elia forever. Chemical not good for the
[26:19] Speaker 1: children totally. I'm with her. I'm with her. We need
[26:23] Speaker 1: more nature in this world.
[26:26] Speaker 2: Yes, so, yeah, I guess I read the local paper
[26:30] Speaker 2: in that sense. Mostly I read, you know, automotive media.
[26:33] Speaker 1: Also speaking of automotive should we talk about Christian Horner
[26:39] Speaker 1: leaving Red Bull or really?
[26:42] Speaker 2: That's what do you think? What do you think about it?
[26:44] Speaker 2: Because I'm not as immersed in the world of f one.
[26:46] Speaker 2: I know he got in trouble for like texting some coworkers.
[26:50] Speaker 2: He denies that he.
[26:51] Speaker 1: An appropriate relationship. You know that he's.
[26:55] Speaker 2: Married to like Ginger Spice.
[27:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, and he got that he's been there for gosh,
[27:03] Speaker 1: twenty years, got the job when he was thirty one. Crazy, yes, crazy,
[27:12] Speaker 1: Obviously there are a lot of politics involved. Max for
[27:16] Speaker 1: Stappen and his dad have had you know, difficult relationships
[27:21] Speaker 1: with Christian Horner, which has been well documented, and I
[27:26] Speaker 1: do think it's interesting that he was not asked to
[27:29] Speaker 1: leave during the time of his indiscretions and his unethical
[27:34] Speaker 1: behavior at Red Bull because they were winning. But you know,
[27:39] Speaker 1: now they're not winning and this car that they will
[27:43] Speaker 1: never admit but it was probably really tailored and manufactured
[27:48] Speaker 1: to really benefit Max for Stappen is still not doing well.
[27:54] Speaker 1: They've gone through multiple secondary team drivers and no one
[27:59] Speaker 1: has been able to really score any points with the
[28:01] Speaker 1: car except for Max and Max. Even Max can't get
[28:04] Speaker 1: it to be great. And everyone seems to think that
[28:08] Speaker 1: Max is leaving soon anyway, So it seems like really
[28:13] Speaker 1: his departure, weirdly is unrelated to the indiscretions and is
[28:16] Speaker 1: truly related to he's not winning anymore.
[28:20] Speaker 2: So is that good? Is that good or bad? Because like,
[28:24] Speaker 2: do you care if your boss, uh, if you're if
[28:27] Speaker 2: you're an F one team, isn't the only thing you
[28:30] Speaker 2: want to do.
[28:31] Speaker 1: Win, Yes, but I don't know. That's a good question.
[28:37] Speaker 1: You know what the crazy thing is, he's not leaving
[28:38] Speaker 1: the organization. They're removing him from his post, but he
[28:43] Speaker 1: at this point, at the point, at the time of
[28:46] Speaker 1: this recording, he's not actually leaving a Red Bull. He's
[28:48] Speaker 1: staying on and we don't know what role he's going
[28:51] Speaker 1: to maintain at Red Bull, which to me could set
[28:56] Speaker 1: up a weird dynamic on the team. If someone's been
[29:00] Speaker 1: the leader and then they're removed from the leadership position
[29:03] Speaker 1: but they're still around. That seems like an odd dynamic.
[29:08] Speaker 2: Where else, Surely they're just giving him time to.
[29:10] Speaker 1: Find enough Yeah, yeah, uh, I don't.
[29:15] Speaker 2: Believe because it's too much intelligence walking out the door.
[29:20] Speaker 1: Could oh could be that too.
[29:21] Speaker 2: Much proprietary you know, I'm.
[29:23] Speaker 1: Sure he has a non compete its contactly.
[29:25] Speaker 2: So we're we're taking you out of your leadership position,
[29:29] Speaker 2: but we're not letting you go from the company, so
[29:30] Speaker 2: you can't go anywhere.
[29:31] Speaker 1: Else kind of thing. Yeah, that sounds that sounds right.
[29:35] Speaker 1: I don't know. I think Motorsport right now is peaking.
[29:41] Speaker 1: Oh did you see F one? Have we talked at
[29:43] Speaker 1: the movie?
[29:44] Speaker 2: I saw the movie yeah, it was okay, it was good.
[29:48] Speaker 1: I guess you don't want to discuss more. You're not raping,
[29:52] Speaker 1: I don't. I haven't.
[29:53] Speaker 2: I don't know a great way to describe how I
[29:55] Speaker 2: feel about the movie, because I suppose I enjoyed my
[29:59] Speaker 2: three hours in the theater. You know, I ate a
[30:01] Speaker 2: lot of popcorn, and I got to see Brad Pitt
[30:06] Speaker 2: and a lot of F one people, you know, driving cars.
[30:11] Speaker 2: But it's just I don't know, is this like a
[30:14] Speaker 2: summer blockbuster movie. I also didn't like the new top
[30:18] Speaker 2: Gun movie Maverick.
[30:20] Speaker 1: I never saw that one.
[30:22] Speaker 2: But if I think about the F one movie in
[30:25] Speaker 2: terms of the actual story or the acting, how I
[30:28] Speaker 2: felt about the characters, none of that was a home run.
[30:32] Speaker 1: There's not really a story there.
[30:34] Speaker 2: It wasn't Moneyball, I mean, when Brad Pitt is in
[30:37] Speaker 2: Moneyball and I have no connection to baseball, whereas I
[30:40] Speaker 2: love to watch motorsports. I thought it was an amazing movie,
[30:44] Speaker 2: like insanely good.
[30:46] Speaker 1: That's a great point.
[30:48] Speaker 2: And I've watched Moneyball like three or four times, and
[30:53] Speaker 2: I don't really need to see F one again because
[30:56] Speaker 2: when I was sitting there, I was thinking I'd much
[30:58] Speaker 2: rather be watching a race, and I think most F
[31:01] Speaker 2: one fans would I would much rather watch a race
[31:04] Speaker 2: than the movie.
[31:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that.
[31:07] Speaker 2: I didn't think the driving scenes were that good interesting.
[31:11] Speaker 2: I didn't feel the drama that I feel when I'm
[31:13] Speaker 2: watching a closed race.
[31:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, oh that's interesting, you know what I would say.
[31:20] Speaker 1: I was relieved when I saw it, because we talked
[31:23] Speaker 1: about this a little bit in the past episodes. But
[31:26] Speaker 1: I liked it. I liked it. I had very low
[31:30] Speaker 1: expectations because I really didn't like four versus Ferrari, so
[31:33] Speaker 1: I was just kind of bracing myself to not like
[31:37] Speaker 1: F one and I liked it. I I came away
[31:41] Speaker 1: excited about motor sport and thinking, oh, my friends who
[31:45] Speaker 1: don't think they're interested in cars will like this movie,
[31:48] Speaker 1: and that's exciting. And I, you know, just yesterday I
[31:52] Speaker 1: was talking with one of our editors justin Ocean, and
[31:55] Speaker 1: he had seen it and he loved it, and he
[31:57] Speaker 1: was all excited about now he wants to go to
[31:59] Speaker 1: a real race, and he's never been to a race.
[32:01] Speaker 1: He's not a particularly big F one fan, but he
[32:04] Speaker 1: knew that Silverstone had just happened in the UK, and
[32:08] Speaker 1: you know, I think I get the feeling that people
[32:11] Speaker 1: it may turn some people into, oh maybe I should
[32:14] Speaker 1: check out the actual sport.
[32:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe I'm too critical because that.
[32:20] Speaker 1: No, I don't think you are, because I think because
[32:23] Speaker 1: you're a real you're a real fan and you have been.
[32:26] Speaker 1: I don't think anything that you said. I don't disagree
[32:28] Speaker 1: with any of it, you know, I mean, Magnis he
[32:32] Speaker 1: doesn't even want to see it. I've tried. I've said
[32:35] Speaker 1: I'll go back and watch it with you because I
[32:37] Speaker 1: was at a press screening. He wasn't there, and he
[32:39] Speaker 1: doesn't even care to see it.
[32:42] Speaker 2: I just think like it didn't move me in any way.
[32:45] Speaker 2: The love interest wasn't compelling.
[32:47] Speaker 1: No, that that was just so lukewe I didn't.
[32:50] Speaker 2: I didn't care if the kid won or not, even
[32:54] Speaker 2: though it's so nice that he lives with his mom,
[32:57] Speaker 2: you know, it's it's obviously completely unbelievable that a sixty
[33:04] Speaker 2: year old man wins an F one race, or I
[33:07] Speaker 2: mean gets close. Yeah, and I even think like, if
[33:12] Speaker 2: you're causing, clearly causing accidents to get out safety car
[33:16] Speaker 2: out there, that's something that.
[33:18] Speaker 1: That would never happen.
[33:19] Speaker 2: The stewards would notice and say that's not. Okay.
[33:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, so I.
[33:24] Speaker 2: Don't know, it was it was? It was it cool
[33:27] Speaker 2: to see Brad Pitt wearing like nice clothes. I guess,
[33:32] Speaker 2: like I want to buy a couple of the shirts
[33:34] Speaker 2: that he was in.
[33:35] Speaker 1: Okay, So that's good. So the branding, the branding worked, Yeah,
[33:41] Speaker 1: the sponsorship, okay.
[33:43] Speaker 2: Far more excited to watch an F one race and
[33:46] Speaker 2: I'm excited to be to watch a Moto GP race
[33:49] Speaker 2: obviously anytime. But I can't think of many movies that
[33:51] Speaker 2: I like better than that anyway, So.
[33:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, I get it. I just in terms of Brad Pitt,
[33:58] Speaker 1: it just made me think, oh, I need to go
[33:59] Speaker 1: rewind fight Club. This was not Brad's finest work.
[34:02] Speaker 2: I will say that, yes, it's hard to pick his
[34:06] Speaker 2: finest work because he's done so many amazing things. I mean,
[34:10] Speaker 2: Legends of Runs through It, River Runs through It and
[34:13] Speaker 2: Legends of the Fall are two of my favorite fight Club.
[34:17] Speaker 2: I love Moneyball, I love him, and Once upon a
[34:19] Speaker 2: Time in Hollywood. Oh and that's the other thing. You
[34:22] Speaker 2: mentioned it before, And I don't think it's so startling,
[34:26] Speaker 2: but the work that he's had done to his face,
[34:29] Speaker 2: even if it's minor filler that somehow like around his
[34:33] Speaker 2: eyes just makes him look like a less special person
[34:38] Speaker 2: and more of a regular dude. And Okay, I don't
[34:41] Speaker 2: like I don't like it at all.
[34:42] Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear you say that. So you do
[34:44] Speaker 1: agree he's had work done. I'm not just either either.
[34:48] Speaker 2: He's had work done since one once upon a time
[34:51] Speaker 2: in Hollywood.
[34:53] Speaker 1: Or he just there's fillers in there.
[34:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, it does like there's no around his eyes. So
[35:00] Speaker 2: it's strange. Yes, this plastic surgery or whatever you call
[35:06] Speaker 2: that look. And I'm kind of bummed that he made
[35:09] Speaker 2: that to me too. Are lucky enough to age.
[35:12] Speaker 1: With Men are allowed to age, Women are not allowed
[35:16] Speaker 1: to age. And like he.
[35:18] Speaker 2: Talked on Maverick by the way, the fact that Kelly McGillis,
[35:20] Speaker 2: they didn't even shout out Charlie in that movie. For me,
[35:25] Speaker 2: it was really really a bummer, like, no, where's Charlie. Oh,
[35:29] Speaker 2: Charlie died in a plane crash. It's just something, or
[35:34] Speaker 2: Charlie got too old and Map doesn't like her anymore,
[35:36] Speaker 2: you know something.
[35:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be sure. Just be honest about it.
[35:40] Speaker 1: We can handle it. Or big girls come on, huh right, Well, yeah,
[35:46] Speaker 1: I agree I was. It just kind of bummed me
[35:48] Speaker 1: out because of all people, Brad Pitt is allowed to
[35:50] Speaker 1: age because his face is special or was, But you're right,
[35:54] Speaker 1: there's something there.
[35:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, I gotta go to this little paleo.
[36:01] Speaker 1: Well, so great to talk with you. Thanks for taking
[36:03] Speaker 1: time out of your vacation.
[36:04] Speaker 2: Thank you so much. I guess I'll probably be here
[36:07] Speaker 2: next week still, but in fact I know something wrong.
[36:13] Speaker 1: We'll be well, let's hope. Gosh, we don't want you
[36:16] Speaker 1: stranded in Italy.
[36:17] Speaker 2: Have you got anything cool coming up before we go to.
[36:21] Speaker 1: Yes? Always next week I'm actually coming to Portugal to
[36:27] Speaker 1: drive the Timorario, the Lamborghini Timorrio, which is the Hurricane successor.
[36:32] Speaker 1: So so yes, So that's fun. And then I will
[36:37] Speaker 1: be in New York and we can do it live together.
[36:41] Speaker 2: That's New York.
