[0:02] Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, podcasts, radio news. I'm Matt Miller and
[0:10] Speaker 1: I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is Hot Pursuit.
[0:20] Speaker 2: We have a very special guest for you this week.
[0:24] Speaker 2: President of General Motors Mark Royce joins us to talk
[0:28] Speaker 2: about a number of interesting things.
[0:30] Speaker 3: But Corvette records, I think are front and front.
[0:33] Speaker 1: Center Corvette records for sure. Obviously GM has had a
[0:37] Speaker 1: rough few quarters, just like every other automaker, but you
[0:40] Speaker 1: and I have business wise, yeah, business wise, but you know,
[0:43] Speaker 1: you and I both have driven recent GM products, recent
[0:48] Speaker 1: GM EV products, and we've actually been pleasantly surprised, I
[0:52] Speaker 1: think on both of us.
[0:53] Speaker 3: I definitely have I feel like.
[0:57] Speaker 2: Every time I get into an EV or I really
[1:00] Speaker 2: that I'm gonna be delivered an EV to test out,
[1:03] Speaker 2: I'm like, kind of I'm not bummed out, but I'm
[1:06] Speaker 2: just like not excited. And then I drive them. And
[1:10] Speaker 2: at first, of course they were fast and the torque
[1:13] Speaker 2: instant torque was kind of fun. But I've really started
[1:16] Speaker 2: to notice that I like the driving dynamics of the
[1:19] Speaker 2: newer ones, and charging them isn't as much of a
[1:23] Speaker 2: pain in the ass as it had been in the past. Certainly, faster,
[1:27] Speaker 2: and I know more about how it works. So the
[1:31] Speaker 2: learning curve it's pretty steep, but once you get there,
[1:36] Speaker 2: it's just not as bad as I have always thought.
[1:39] Speaker 4: It would be.
[1:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it'll be very interesting to see if,
[1:44] Speaker 1: like as popular opinion sort of cool somewhat on EVS
[1:49] Speaker 1: at the moment, whether these good products get lost in
[1:53] Speaker 1: that attitude shift or not, Like, can GM have the
[1:57] Speaker 1: staying power and obviously they have strategies like making some
[2:01] Speaker 1: vehicles with Hyundai for instance, can they sort of ride
[2:05] Speaker 1: out this momentary dip in the cooling of interests in EVS.
[2:10] Speaker 2: I wonder if the whole industry can ride it at Yes,
[2:12] Speaker 2: I've been thinking about this all week.
[2:14] Speaker 1: I wonder Ferrari, it's temporary.
[2:16] Speaker 3: It's temporary.
[2:16] Speaker 2: But is there is there anyone who's buying evs now
[2:19] Speaker 2: who wasn't isn't an early adopter see that?
[2:22] Speaker 1: I don't think so. I don't think so.
[2:25] Speaker 2: I don't think so unless you're someone like like, we
[2:27] Speaker 2: get a chance to test drive these vehicles all the time,
[2:29] Speaker 2: but your average consumer maybe you can take a test
[2:32] Speaker 2: drive at a deal or for twenty minutes or an
[2:35] Speaker 2: hour max. So they don't get a chance to see
[2:39] Speaker 2: the benefits or learn the way we do, and I
[2:42] Speaker 2: wonder if it's gonna work out. I've always said I'm
[2:45] Speaker 2: sure EV's are gonna be the future, but are they really?
[2:48] Speaker 3: Is it gonna you know?
[2:49] Speaker 2: I also think there's real differentiation because you know, I
[2:54] Speaker 2: loved the Dodge Charger EV. I loved the driving dynamics,
[2:58] Speaker 2: I love the styling, but at the end of the day,
[3:00] Speaker 2: it gets far less than two hundred miles to a charge,
[3:03] Speaker 2: So I'm not gonna buy that.
[3:05] Speaker 1: At the end of the day. Maybe that's your second EV.
[3:07] Speaker 1: And how many people are buying two EV's not a lot,
[3:11] Speaker 1: but like maybe the Dodge is your second EV on
[3:14] Speaker 1: top of one that does have more range.
[3:16] Speaker 2: Well, the thing is, I've noticed that these GM vehicles
[3:18] Speaker 2: have a ton more range than almost everyone else. I
[3:22] Speaker 2: can't remember what the EV nine was and that was
[3:25] Speaker 2: I think pretty impressive, but.
[3:26] Speaker 1: I think it was around three.
[3:28] Speaker 3: So that's that's the mark you've got to hit.
[3:30] Speaker 2: And totally they're getting that with the Silverado, EV, with
[3:34] Speaker 2: the Hummer, with the Cadillac and now recently I've driven
[3:39] Speaker 2: the Blazer and the Vistick and they all had that.
[3:42] Speaker 2: I don't think the Vistick was quite as much, but
[3:43] Speaker 2: they had these giant two hundred kilowat hour battery packs
[3:46] Speaker 2: around there, and that just gives you monstrous range.
[3:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, the Optic has I think two hundred or sorry,
[3:53] Speaker 1: three hundred and two miles and I had zero anxiety
[3:56] Speaker 1: driving that thing. And I had it for a week
[3:58] Speaker 1: and I drove all I would find reasons to drive it,
[4:01] Speaker 1: which says a lot, because usually I am not wanting
[4:04] Speaker 1: to charge, not wanting to drive them because it's a hassle.
[4:07] Speaker 2: But well, there just seem to be so many more
[4:10] Speaker 2: EV's now to choose from that whole list of GM
[4:14] Speaker 2: EV's I've driven in the past couple of months, and
[4:18] Speaker 2: I have coming up. I have the new Ix to
[4:21] Speaker 2: drive from BMW. I have the new Macon coming from Portia.
[4:28] Speaker 2: I have I'm finally going to drive a Rivian like
[4:30] Speaker 2: you know, three years later coming up.
[4:32] Speaker 3: So I have a lot of evs stacked.
[4:35] Speaker 1: Wow. I mean, did you ever think you'd be here, Matt?
[4:38] Speaker 2: No, And I mean the funny thing is, the more
[4:41] Speaker 2: I drive them, the more I think, uh, maybe I
[4:45] Speaker 2: buy one as a family. There's so many more family cars, right,
[4:47] Speaker 2: I'm looking for I'm waiting for. And I talked to
[4:50] Speaker 2: Jim Farley a couple weeks ago and he said, they're
[4:53] Speaker 2: eventually coming out with this three row EV, and if
[4:57] Speaker 2: they do a super duty version of it, then I'm
[4:59] Speaker 2: in because I want.
[5:00] Speaker 3: A super duty three row EV.
[5:04] Speaker 2: But they haven't made a super duty EV since super
[5:07] Speaker 2: duty three row since, you know, for an ice vehicle,
[5:10] Speaker 2: since the Excursion for Ford, and there used to be
[5:13] Speaker 2: a super duty version of the suburban. But there's no
[5:15] Speaker 2: super duty three row right now.
[5:17] Speaker 1: So you would consider an EV as the primary family vehicle.
[5:22] Speaker 3: Yeah, I would for sure.
[5:24] Speaker 2: Wow Wow, Yeah, because you leave it plugged in at
[5:27] Speaker 2: your house then when you want to take a trip.
[5:30] Speaker 2: I've I've realized how superchargers are, high speed chargers work,
[5:33] Speaker 2: and I know how to find them, so I'm not
[5:36] Speaker 2: as worried as I used to be about it.
[5:37] Speaker 1: Yeah. That's interesting because I used to kind of think, Okay,
[5:40] Speaker 1: most people are going to have a combustion vehicle as
[5:43] Speaker 1: their primary car, and then they might have an EV,
[5:46] Speaker 1: but they want the stability and safety emotionally speaking of
[5:51] Speaker 1: something that runs on gasoline.
[5:52] Speaker 3: Now for me, it's flipped interesting, right, I will be
[5:56] Speaker 3: in the next couple of years. Happy to have an
[5:58] Speaker 3: ev as.
[5:59] Speaker 2: The family as the grocery getter, but I'm going to
[6:03] Speaker 2: have you know, a fire breathing.
[6:06] Speaker 1: Well that car that is actually if we're talking like
[6:09] Speaker 1: long term, that's what everybody has said about these fun
[6:13] Speaker 1: sports cars that we all like to drive, like you know,
[6:17] Speaker 1: air cooled Porsches for instance. We don't need those cars,
[6:20] Speaker 1: but we still have them around because they're fun to drive,
[6:22] Speaker 1: and they have personality and character. And there's the argument that,
[6:25] Speaker 1: you know, internal combustion will never completely go away because
[6:28] Speaker 1: there will be hobbyists an enthusiast who maintain the cars
[6:32] Speaker 1: at a reduced level as simply weekend fun toys.
[6:37] Speaker 3: I prefer the term enthusiast.
[6:39] Speaker 1: I hope no one ever calls me a hobbyist, hobbyist, enthusiast.
[6:43] Speaker 3: Young me would have hated it. Old me was going
[6:46] Speaker 3: to be a hobbyist.
[6:49] Speaker 2: All right, let's get to this interview then, with Mark Royce,
[6:53] Speaker 2: the president of General Motors. I'm really happy to have
[6:56] Speaker 2: you Mark. I'm obviously we're both huge fans of your products.
[7:01] Speaker 2: That you know, Hannah has actually bought a number of Corvettes,
[7:05] Speaker 2: and uh.
[7:06] Speaker 1: It's true this is true.
[7:07] Speaker 4: Wow, that's awesome.
[7:08] Speaker 2: I just got out of the Cadillac Vistick as well,
[7:11] Speaker 2: which totally impressed me. And I have to say more
[7:14] Speaker 2: and more, I'm enjoying my time in evs, which is
[7:18] Speaker 2: shocking to anyone who knows me to hear that come
[7:20] Speaker 2: out of my mouth. But I wonder what you think
[7:22] Speaker 2: about the the evolution of you know, the driving capabilities
[7:27] Speaker 2: of your electric vehicles.
[7:30] Speaker 4: That's a great, great question, because I'm with you. I
[7:34] Speaker 4: just bought a Vistick, you know, and I have three
[7:36] Speaker 4: kids and now they're they're having boyfriend's girlfriends and spouses
[7:42] Speaker 4: and now a grand child on the way very shortly.
[7:46] Speaker 4: So we're you know, we we we we have one
[7:50] Speaker 4: of our big SUV's and I just traded in as
[7:52] Speaker 4: a twenty one for a new Vestic. And I have
[7:55] Speaker 4: to say, you know, the more I'm in that type
[7:58] Speaker 4: of vehicle, the more I joy it. And you know,
[8:01] Speaker 4: the one I bought has air ride and four wheel steer,
[8:04] Speaker 4: and you know, it's everything. It's really everything you could imagine,
[8:08] Speaker 4: and the fuel economy and the range is right in there,
[8:11] Speaker 4: you know, at over three hundred and almost all of them,
[8:14] Speaker 4: in fact, all of them. It's really not a compromise anymore.
[8:18] Speaker 4: And they're fun to drive, and they're beautifully quiet, and
[8:22] Speaker 4: especially that the Cadillacs are, you know, everything the Cadillacts
[8:26] Speaker 4: should be, right, Yeah.
[8:27] Speaker 3: I mean even even the Chevy Blazer EV.
[8:31] Speaker 2: I drove the SS version and I had a longer
[8:34] Speaker 2: trip to make in it, and my wife was a
[8:36] Speaker 2: little bit nervous about, you know, doing four hundred miles
[8:39] Speaker 2: in electric vehicle, but the car knew where the next
[8:44] Speaker 2: supercharger was. It took us literally twelve minutes to charge
[8:47] Speaker 2: from twenty percent to eighty percent, and it was like
[8:51] Speaker 2: such a great uh.
[8:53] Speaker 3: We used to call it a sleeper.
[8:54] Speaker 2: Right, a big station wagon that you don't know is
[8:56] Speaker 2: going to be a super fast ride for like an
[8:58] Speaker 2: Autobahn journey. So I just more and more often as
[9:03] Speaker 2: we get the variety. I'm really impressed by the driving
[9:08] Speaker 2: characteristics of these vehicles.
[9:11] Speaker 4: It's great you say that, because I would say that
[9:13] Speaker 4: this has been written as well by other people like yourself,
[9:18] Speaker 4: that our vehicle dynamics and our integration is world class.
[9:22] Speaker 4: It's it could be the best in the industry. And
[9:25] Speaker 4: I think you see it when we have engineers like
[9:28] Speaker 4: the ones that set the times at the Ring A
[9:30] Speaker 4: combined you know, they're a combined experience level of thirty
[9:34] Speaker 4: six years, and so you know these that's what they
[9:37] Speaker 4: do and that's all they do in fact them out
[9:39] Speaker 4: here today at the proving grounds, we spend about five
[9:42] Speaker 4: hours every Friday looking at every single car and every
[9:46] Speaker 4: stage of development, and we pick, you know, a target
[9:50] Speaker 4: to beat in segment and so we do that and
[9:54] Speaker 4: so there's no surprise when we launch that we're going
[9:57] Speaker 4: to get good reviews. And so we've been doing that
[9:59] Speaker 4: for quite a while. But that's really part of the
[10:02] Speaker 4: deal is you know, there's five or six of us
[10:04] Speaker 4: that that ride every car, with every chief engineer and
[10:08] Speaker 4: the development team and you know, the whole integration team
[10:11] Speaker 4: out here every week, and so I think it's really
[10:16] Speaker 4: a big competitive advantage. So I'm happy you recognize that mark.
[10:19] Speaker 1: We just this week ran my review of the Optic,
[10:22] Speaker 1: which I also thought was really solid, and I remember
[10:26] Speaker 1: when that car first debuted. Hun Kim was telling me that,
[10:31] Speaker 1: you know, GM has seen an increase of younger buyers,
[10:36] Speaker 1: and by younger, we're talking like maybe around forty or
[10:39] Speaker 1: younger than that. Is that who you find buying vehicles
[10:45] Speaker 1: like the Optic and the Vistick, is it typically a
[10:47] Speaker 1: younger buyer or not necessarily.
[10:50] Speaker 4: I think if you look at Cadillac as a whole,
[10:53] Speaker 4: we're under you know, this is a this has been
[10:55] Speaker 4: a long journey to transform the brand, and you know,
[10:58] Speaker 4: the portfolio on the commitment that the company has put
[11:01] Speaker 4: behind it, both in people and products, is beginning to
[11:06] Speaker 4: tell that story. And I would say that, you know,
[11:10] Speaker 4: if you look at the demographics of Cadillac along with Buick,
[11:14] Speaker 4: we're seeing an influx of younger people and it's changing
[11:18] Speaker 4: the ages, but it's also conquesting. And so you know,
[11:21] Speaker 4: we're running about seventy percent conquest on our Cadillac evs,
[11:25] Speaker 4: Which that's a great story right there, right Yeah.
[11:29] Speaker 1: I mean it's interesting to me because obviously this is
[11:33] Speaker 1: a really difficult time in the automotive industry. I know,
[11:37] Speaker 1: profits have really suffered, but I also read that sales
[11:42] Speaker 1: are up in the US for GM and in China.
[11:48] Speaker 1: Can you talk about that duality that you know, it's
[11:51] Speaker 1: very challenging out there right now, but also like sales
[11:55] Speaker 1: are up, that's.
[11:56] Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, We've we've gained share for you know, several
[12:00] Speaker 4: quarters now and we're running over seventeen percent in the US,
[12:03] Speaker 4: which is a really good healthy share for US. And
[12:06] Speaker 4: then if you look at the utilization of capacity, we're
[12:10] Speaker 4: increasing that as we look at different footprints of different
[12:13] Speaker 4: cars as we introduce them. So that's a positive thing too.
[12:17] Speaker 4: And if you look at that along with China and
[12:21] Speaker 4: you look at the turnaround that we have going on
[12:24] Speaker 4: in China, it's really a matching supply and demand fundamentally,
[12:29] Speaker 4: but also the discipline and pricing. You know, there's people
[12:33] Speaker 4: that will raise prices amidst the tariff structure that we're
[12:39] Speaker 4: seeing unfold. We're not doing that. We have at the
[12:44] Speaker 4: end of the day, extremely desirable vehicles and it all
[12:48] Speaker 4: gets down to product. And that's both in China and here.
[12:52] Speaker 4: And the pricing discipline in China and the commercial piece
[12:55] Speaker 4: of that has seen a seismic change. So we've got
[12:59] Speaker 4: a new team team over there with Steve Hill and
[13:01] Speaker 4: Jim Campbell and the rest of the JV teams, and
[13:05] Speaker 4: they come from the US and they have a very
[13:08] Speaker 4: very structured discipline approcess approach on how we go to market.
[13:12] Speaker 4: But we can't have that if we don't have the
[13:14] Speaker 4: right cars, and so that's been the real secret to it.
[13:19] Speaker 4: From a design, from a performance Matt you mentioned that
[13:22] Speaker 4: vehicle dynamics, integration, all those things have to be hitting,
[13:26] Speaker 4: you know, with with all success to be able to
[13:30] Speaker 4: run the pricing and the market share game. We've got
[13:32] Speaker 4: the one of the that I would say, we flutter
[13:35] Speaker 4: around the lowest incentive rates in the industry. That's a
[13:39] Speaker 4: big deal. GM hasn't done that in a long time.
[13:42] Speaker 4: So we're doing that gaining share, not changing our pricing.
[13:47] Speaker 4: So we're priced right. We have highly desirable cars, and
[13:50] Speaker 4: we're not fluttering around you know, high and low pricing,
[13:55] Speaker 4: cutting prices, slashing prices, discounting our vehicles because ovehicles are
[14:00] Speaker 4: highly desirable, and so that's a it's a good value
[14:04] Speaker 4: whatever the car is. And that's that's the real secret
[14:06] Speaker 4: between both regions.
[14:08] Speaker 2: The I mean, the vehicles we normally talk about in
[14:10] Speaker 2: this podcast are the CT five V Black Wing from
[14:14] Speaker 2: Cadillac and all the corvettes from you know, Hannah's C
[14:18] Speaker 2: three's up to the E Ray that I love so much.
[14:22] Speaker 2: And of course we want to talk about the records
[14:24] Speaker 2: that you guys are breaking at the nurburg Ring. But
[14:26] Speaker 2: before we get off EV's I just want to talk
[14:29] Speaker 2: more a little bit more about the dynamics because I
[14:31] Speaker 2: love the Silverado EV that I drove in terms of
[14:34] Speaker 2: the way it actually performed. And I know you've set
[14:37] Speaker 2: another record there with I think over one thousand miles
[14:40] Speaker 2: of range in a Silverado EV. Plus you've got a
[14:43] Speaker 2: new a new trail boss that has like over seven
[14:46] Speaker 2: hundred horse power and rides on thirty five So what
[14:50] Speaker 2: do you expect from the Silverado platform EV wise? Matt, Yeah, yeah,
[14:54] Speaker 2: because because like Hannah said, like right now is a
[14:57] Speaker 2: tough time for the industry, so many people have turned
[15:00] Speaker 2: anti EV.
[15:01] Speaker 3: But at the same.
[15:02] Speaker 2: Time, you're releasing like the greatest EVA really yes, and
[15:06] Speaker 2: people like me and I'm like you Mark, you know,
[15:09] Speaker 2: I'm a gearhead. I like to smell gasoline, I like
[15:11] Speaker 2: the vibes. But I'm being convinced by these products.
[15:15] Speaker 4: Well, it's great to hear, and I think if you
[15:17] Speaker 4: look at what we're doing portfolio wise, this is this
[15:20] Speaker 4: is a growth area for us if we do it right.
[15:24] Speaker 4: If we don't do it right, then we're going to
[15:26] Speaker 4: be into all the things that happen when you when
[15:29] Speaker 4: you don't have good EVS or you haven't changed your
[15:31] Speaker 4: EVS or too expensive. It goes on and on, right,
[15:36] Speaker 4: but if we get the right range, you know, over
[15:38] Speaker 4: three hundred miles on most products, and we have the
[15:41] Speaker 4: right price points, and again we have real integration. So
[15:46] Speaker 4: it's not you know, it's a great car number one,
[15:48] Speaker 4: number two, it may may happen to be an EV Philosophically,
[15:52] Speaker 4: that's what we've gone after. And you know, it works
[15:55] Speaker 4: and people see it, and you know, once you get
[15:58] Speaker 4: into being able to charge in a lot of different places,
[16:02] Speaker 4: including your home, that's a big deal. And I read
[16:06] Speaker 4: there was twenty five thousand additional superchargers in the United
[16:11] Speaker 4: States year to year, and so these are no longer
[16:14] Speaker 4: you know, finding Hen's teeth. They're becoming very very common.
[16:18] Speaker 4: And you know, my daughter, my youngest daughter drives the
[16:21] Speaker 4: Indiana for school, drives an EV and you know there
[16:26] Speaker 4: are multiple places, like if you're hungry or I have
[16:28] Speaker 4: to use the restroom, there's multiple places. And like you said,
[16:31] Speaker 4: you went from twenty percent to eighty percent Atavistic in
[16:34] Speaker 4: about ten minutes. That's pretty compelling, right.
[16:38] Speaker 1: Can I ask how this plan with Hyundai to jointly
[16:42] Speaker 1: develop vehicles feeds in to the overall strategy. I don't
[16:48] Speaker 1: think the vehicles you guys are developing together are for
[16:50] Speaker 1: the US, correct me if I'm wrong, But can you
[16:53] Speaker 1: explain a little bit about how that is part of
[16:56] Speaker 1: the strategy that you guys are running.
[16:59] Speaker 4: Yes, we just announced that obviously for Central and South
[17:03] Speaker 4: America market primarily, but you know we're also looking for
[17:08] Speaker 4: a co development of an electric commercial ban from North America.
[17:12] Speaker 4: So it's a mix, Hannah, uh. And you know, these
[17:15] Speaker 4: are some things that you know, we're pretty disciplined with
[17:19] Speaker 4: capital on a on a yearly basis, year to year,
[17:23] Speaker 4: and so our discipline on capital forces us to make
[17:25] Speaker 4: the highest priority portfolio decisions first. But we have some
[17:31] Speaker 4: places in our portfolio we would like to fill in globally,
[17:35] Speaker 4: and so that's really the thinking behind it. And so
[17:38] Speaker 4: and they're they're there are places that are synergistic with
[17:41] Speaker 4: and DIE and so you know, for instance, they really
[17:44] Speaker 4: don't have a mid size pickup and then neither of
[17:48] Speaker 4: us have a hybrid propulsion system in a mid sized pickup.
[17:53] Speaker 4: And so then you look at a compact suv, you know,
[17:58] Speaker 4: they there's there's synergy both ways. Globally on that something
[18:01] Speaker 4: like that. We have those in North America, but you
[18:04] Speaker 4: know that that would be good, and then a car
[18:07] Speaker 4: might be a nice you know, we don't have many
[18:10] Speaker 4: cars left, we have a few, but a good sedan
[18:14] Speaker 4: would be highly desirable as well. So that's sort of
[18:17] Speaker 4: the thinking behind if that makes sense.
[18:19] Speaker 1: Are those going to be branded GM vehicles or or tv.
[18:24] Speaker 4: D tb D because the co development we really haven't
[18:28] Speaker 4: talked about yet on who's got the lead on which products,
[18:31] Speaker 4: so we'll interesting well, uh, you know, yeah, so what
[18:35] Speaker 4: they're branded, and I don't mean you know, what we
[18:38] Speaker 4: sell will be branded General Motors, but it won't be
[18:40] Speaker 4: General Motors, it'll be a brand. So we haven't we
[18:43] Speaker 4: haven't settled on which GM brand. He and I has
[18:47] Speaker 4: obviously got a different strategy there. They don't have the
[18:50] Speaker 4: multiple brands you know, closely aligned with Kia obviously, but
[18:54] Speaker 4: they don't have the full portfolio of brands that we
[18:58] Speaker 4: do or the distribute set up like we do.
[19:01] Speaker 1: So do you think that as we move deeper into
[19:05] Speaker 1: this world of tariffs and China really being competitive with
[19:10] Speaker 1: electric vehicles, will we see more and more of these
[19:13] Speaker 1: type of partnerships where two major manufacturers are actually working together.
[19:18] Speaker 4: I think you've seen it, and I don't. I can't
[19:21] Speaker 4: come in on the success of it, but you've seen
[19:23] Speaker 4: it already on two pretty big manufacturers on EVS, right,
[19:28] Speaker 4: I think with Ford and b W that was one.
[19:31] Speaker 4: But I think on a relatively high cost of capital
[19:37] Speaker 4: situation that the industry and the world is in right
[19:40] Speaker 4: now lends itself to some some pretty synergistic discussions. But
[19:47] Speaker 4: I can't answer. I don't have a crystal ball. I
[19:49] Speaker 4: don't know if that if that radically changes through the industry,
[19:53] Speaker 4: but it certainly is something that that you know, maybe
[19:58] Speaker 4: accelerates the conversation.
[20:00] Speaker 2: All right, Speaking of acceleration, let's get to these Corvette records.
[20:03] Speaker 2: Because you have been driving the the z R one
[20:08] Speaker 2: and the z R one X, or your engineers rather
[20:11] Speaker 2: have been driving them at the Nurburgring norch SLIFA, and
[20:13] Speaker 2: that's I think as big a part of the story
[20:16] Speaker 2: as the records themselves. The fact that you're not using
[20:19] Speaker 2: professional race car drivers to do six point fifty uh
[20:23] Speaker 2: six forty nine, I mean shattering records that probably anger
[20:28] Speaker 2: angers your crosstown rivals just a little bit there. So
[20:31] Speaker 2: tell us about these Corvettes, Mark and the drivers and
[20:35] Speaker 2: the drivers.
[20:36] Speaker 4: Yeah, the drivers are are are people that you know,
[20:40] Speaker 4: we infect I'm driving with them today out here on
[20:43] Speaker 4: on some some things, some other performance cards stuff. But
[20:48] Speaker 4: they they are at the core wonderful vehicle dynamics engineers
[20:53] Speaker 4: that are very good drivers. And so you know, this
[20:57] Speaker 4: story hasn't been told about how deeply committed and what
[21:02] Speaker 4: wonderful people they are, but also what wonderful engineers and
[21:05] Speaker 4: drivers they are. So I really Ken Morris started this
[21:09] Speaker 4: activity twenty years ago plus with the first Sigma based
[21:15] Speaker 4: CTS vehicles as we were developing the Sigma platform, so
[21:20] Speaker 4: he really started the development and validation that we do
[21:24] Speaker 4: over there. And you know, so that that's been going
[21:27] Speaker 4: on a while, and we've been building the performance piece
[21:30] Speaker 4: on Cadillac and Corvette over there as well.
[21:32] Speaker 2: So what was that like the CTSV the.
[21:35] Speaker 4: It was the original CTS if you can believe that, Yeah,
[21:40] Speaker 4: long time ago, and then of course we developed it
[21:42] Speaker 4: into the v's there, but yeah, the first ones. Yeah,
[21:45] Speaker 4: it's pretty pretty awesome. So it's been going on a
[21:49] Speaker 4: long time, and you know, we're there. We have our
[21:51] Speaker 4: own workshop there which is really nice and so you know,
[21:55] Speaker 4: we finally put the business case together that shipping all
[21:57] Speaker 4: the parts and cars over there and renting drive space
[22:01] Speaker 4: probably wasn't great from a business standpoint, So we ended
[22:06] Speaker 4: up facilitating a pretty nice space where we can keep
[22:09] Speaker 4: our our parts libraries for development and then you know,
[22:14] Speaker 4: shipping cars. Well you saw the video probably, but the
[22:16] Speaker 4: shipping the cars there is hard enough, right and getting
[22:19] Speaker 4: a weather window and so all that stuff has to
[22:23] Speaker 4: be synced up. So it's not an easy trip to
[22:25] Speaker 4: set records, but it's a lot easier to go over
[22:28] Speaker 4: there during the industry pool and develop, which you know,
[22:30] Speaker 4: myself and and Ken and the whole team do that,
[22:34] Speaker 4: and and we did that pretty recently before we went
[22:38] Speaker 4: over and those guys went and set the record and
[22:43] Speaker 4: I couldn't go because Michael Simkov was retiring and I
[22:45] Speaker 4: wasn't gonna miss his retirement party, so I stayed home,
[22:49] Speaker 4: but the rest of the team went and it was
[22:51] Speaker 4: just phenomenal, But you know, it wasn't it was I want.
[22:56] Speaker 4: I want people that had that much. I mean, as
[22:58] Speaker 4: I as I get older and I appreciate so much
[23:03] Speaker 4: the people we have, I really get a lot of satisfaction. Yes,
[23:07] Speaker 4: out of the records. It's great, but out've seen them
[23:10] Speaker 4: have their time in the sun doing this. It's really important,
[23:15] Speaker 4: and you know, it's all about the people at the
[23:18] Speaker 4: end of the day, and these these these guys are
[23:22] Speaker 4: I'm not sure anybody else has people like this, you know,
[23:25] Speaker 4: doing this.
[23:26] Speaker 3: Who are they?
[23:27] Speaker 2: What are the names of the record setting drivers?
[23:29] Speaker 4: Yeah, Drew Cautel did the six forty nine in the
[23:33] Speaker 4: zero one X and then Brian Wallace did the z
[23:38] Speaker 4: R one at six point fifty and then Aaron Link
[23:42] Speaker 4: did the ZO six at seven eleven. So those are
[23:46] Speaker 4: the three people and they're just.
[23:49] Speaker 2: Mark They're just engineers that have come up through They're
[23:52] Speaker 2: studied like electro mechanics or engineering or something. They're not
[23:56] Speaker 2: like NASCAR into guys, Oh.
[23:59] Speaker 4: No at all. They started here and there their their
[24:03] Speaker 4: vehicle dynamics. You know, engineers is what they are, which
[24:08] Speaker 4: means it's a it's a term, it's an engineering term.
[24:11] Speaker 4: But what it really does is these people, uh, these
[24:15] Speaker 4: three engineers and people like them in our company anyway,
[24:20] Speaker 4: know how to integrate the car, so they know how
[24:21] Speaker 4: to set the car up. They know how to develop
[24:24] Speaker 4: that setup and they develop it. If you look at
[24:27] Speaker 4: the Corvette. We did this the other day for the
[24:29] Speaker 4: first time in a long time, is we drove the
[24:31] Speaker 4: whole portfolio. So these guys did everything from the base Corvette,
[24:35] Speaker 4: which is a sweetheart, right, Z fifty one, you know
[24:40] Speaker 4: LT two find really fun car all the way through
[24:44] Speaker 4: E ray, Z six, z R one to Z one X.
[24:48] Speaker 4: So they had seats doing the vehicle dynamics on all
[24:52] Speaker 4: of them. So each one of those cars is completely different,
[24:56] Speaker 4: and it's because of them and their knowledge of the
[25:00] Speaker 4: eight can deliver and they architect to the help out.
[25:04] Speaker 4: You know, they help architect the car and design the
[25:06] Speaker 4: car based on what we want these entries to do.
[25:09] Speaker 4: So it starts very early in the development process and
[25:12] Speaker 4: they continually develop those those you know five entries.
[25:17] Speaker 1: So yeah, can we talk about what Cadillac is doing
[25:21] Speaker 1: in motorsport in general, and I think these records totally
[25:26] Speaker 1: feed into it. Obviously, you have the F one team
[25:28] Speaker 1: coming next year, which is so exciting. I know obviously
[25:32] Speaker 1: we've talked about this before, but your you are a
[25:34] Speaker 1: motorsports guy, Mark, it seems from the outside that we
[25:38] Speaker 1: are really on a high in terms of just motorsport
[25:41] Speaker 1: awareness in the country. In general. Are you seeing that
[25:45] Speaker 1: and how is that feeding back into the brand.
[25:50] Speaker 4: We are. It's a great question, Hannah, because if you
[25:52] Speaker 4: look at I was looking at the I had a
[25:54] Speaker 4: motorsports meaning yesterday, and we looked at the activation that
[25:57] Speaker 4: happens therese different rays is actually around the world, and
[26:03] Speaker 4: then the conversion to sales and you know, you know,
[26:06] Speaker 4: if you go to a race and you go to
[26:08] Speaker 4: our stand and you look at the cars that were racing,
[26:10] Speaker 4: and you look at the cars that we're making, there's
[26:13] Speaker 4: a direct lineage on almost all of them, whether it's powertrain,
[26:17] Speaker 4: chassis design, whatever that is. You can see it. And
[26:22] Speaker 4: people people sign up to get more information around buying
[26:25] Speaker 4: a car, and then you track the funnel, if you will,
[26:29] Speaker 4: from the awareness to whether they register a car or not.
[26:32] Speaker 4: So we've got good data around that and that comes
[26:35] Speaker 4: from having great, great attendance, but also great interest in
[26:40] Speaker 4: motorsports across the country and frankly across the world. And
[26:43] Speaker 4: F one is really the pinnacle of that. You know,
[26:47] Speaker 4: over half of the fans and F one for instance,
[26:50] Speaker 4: are female, and so that's a tremendous, uh you know
[26:56] Speaker 4: statement there, because that is hardcore, you know, worldwide stage
[27:01] Speaker 4: and so but that's just one of them, you know,
[27:04] Speaker 4: one of the stats, and we see crowds whatever venue
[27:08] Speaker 4: we're racing in, and we're racing in just about all
[27:10] Speaker 4: of them. To some extent, we see a great, great
[27:14] Speaker 4: tie in for the brand. But also, you know, we
[27:18] Speaker 4: can make great cars, but if no one knows about them,
[27:20] Speaker 4: that's a problem, right, It's hard to sell cars. And
[27:23] Speaker 4: so this is a pretty much a core for us
[27:27] Speaker 4: to get brand awareness, to get people in our cars.
[27:29] Speaker 4: But it's also as you as you said, there's a
[27:32] Speaker 4: tie into what we produce, what we engineer, and what
[27:35] Speaker 4: we integrate, and it comes directly from that. Our Motorsports Center,
[27:39] Speaker 4: for instance, in Charlotte, North Carolina, is set up to
[27:44] Speaker 4: really develop all of our motorsports vehicles, powertrains teams with
[27:50] Speaker 4: Pontiac here and then are also core engineering of our
[27:54] Speaker 4: vehicles here in Detroit. So it's really quite wonderful. And
[27:58] Speaker 4: then of course we we are now spreading that to
[28:01] Speaker 4: Indiana and then into Silverstone in the UK. So there's
[28:08] Speaker 4: it's quite a wonderful footprint and you know a lot
[28:11] Speaker 4: of people come to want to come to work for
[28:12] Speaker 4: us because of it too.
[28:14] Speaker 2: I have to say that, you know. So we saw you,
[28:16] Speaker 2: Hannah and I both saw you at Lamar at the Cadillac,
[28:21] Speaker 2: at the Cadillac station and watching that race. That was
[28:27] Speaker 2: honestly one of the best nights of my life, you know,
[28:30] Speaker 2: because you're there, and Gil West was there, and Dario
[28:35] Speaker 2: Francti was there, and we're just all hanging out like
[28:38] Speaker 2: the guys from Multi Mattic and the guys from Singer.
[28:40] Speaker 3: Watching this race through.
[28:41] Speaker 2: The night was just unbelievable, And the Cadillac sounded better
[28:46] Speaker 2: than any of the cars out there. I just loved
[28:49] Speaker 2: it so much. Next year that's the Hypercar Entry. Of course,
[28:54] Speaker 2: next year Ford is entering that. And I've always wondered,
[28:59] Speaker 2: do you ever see like Jim Farley around at these things?
[29:03] Speaker 2: How competitive are you guys? Do you guys like not
[29:05] Speaker 2: talk to each other? Does he get super mad if
[29:07] Speaker 2: you if you break his Mustang GTD nerve burgering record.
[29:11] Speaker 4: Well, you saw what he wrote, so I don't think
[29:14] Speaker 4: that was mad or what.
[29:16] Speaker 1: An he right, Mark, I didn't see it. I missed it.
[29:20] Speaker 4: You said congratulations to the Corvette team game on.
[29:25] Speaker 1: That's great, that's good. Yeah, that's good.
[29:27] Speaker 3: Good, healthy comminations, right.
[29:28] Speaker 4: I mean, that's that's what it's supposed to be. That's
[29:30] Speaker 4: what it's all about. Right. So no, of course not.
[29:33] Speaker 4: We we saw each other at role X to kick
[29:36] Speaker 4: off the race season this year. I've seen Bill Ford
[29:40] Speaker 4: in quite a few races too, so that's nice and
[29:43] Speaker 4: h it's fun because it's not like that. It's for instance,
[29:47] Speaker 4: I chair the This is not widely known, but I
[29:51] Speaker 4: chair the Henry Ford Museum Board here in Detroit, and
[29:57] Speaker 4: so you know, I'm pretty pretty active in that and
[30:01] Speaker 4: I love the place, and you know, that's our that's
[30:03] Speaker 4: our museum, and so I'm honored to do that, and
[30:06] Speaker 4: it's you know, it's got got a lot of Ford involvement,
[30:09] Speaker 4: and so you know, it's a look, we compete every
[30:13] Speaker 4: day in sales and and with our companies, but no,
[30:18] Speaker 4: it's a you know, it's a small world.
[30:20] Speaker 1: So yeah, now I gotta ask. We're going, of course
[30:23] Speaker 1: into Monterey Car Week next week, and I know Cadillac
[30:26] Speaker 1: will be there. I hear they're showing something of interest.
[30:32] Speaker 1: What can you tell us about what we're going to
[30:33] Speaker 1: see next week?
[30:35] Speaker 4: Well, it's kind of like in Chevrolet, so you'll see
[30:39] Speaker 4: see some things that are pretty pretty remarkable.
[30:43] Speaker 1: And yes I misspoke, Chevrolet, really this is this is
[30:47] Speaker 1: the point. Maybe we can we can edit that out,
[30:49] Speaker 1: but Chevrolet.
[30:51] Speaker 4: H Yeah, Chevrolet will show a nod to the future,
[30:57] Speaker 4: and the nod will be not unlike what we did
[31:02] Speaker 4: with Celestic if you if you remember, the selected Celestic
[31:07] Speaker 4: for Cadillac was actually done before the rest of the
[31:11] Speaker 4: vehicle portfolio you see today. The reason why we did
[31:14] Speaker 4: it was to precisely define what the design language was
[31:19] Speaker 4: going to be for Cadillac as we transformed the brand.
[31:23] Speaker 4: And so a lot of that Celestic, as you see,
[31:27] Speaker 4: shows up in everything from Optic to Vistic to lyric,
[31:32] Speaker 4: even the ice, the i Q, the e V i Q,
[31:36] Speaker 4: and then you see it in starting to show up
[31:39] Speaker 4: in our ice ice products for Cadillac too. So there's
[31:42] Speaker 4: a consistency of brand. And so what you'll see I
[31:44] Speaker 4: think in Pebble Beach is a really remarkable set of
[31:49] Speaker 4: cars that hint to the design language is you'll see
[31:55] Speaker 4: on some of the incredible cars that show of length.
[31:58] Speaker 1: A set I'm very much set of cars.
[32:02] Speaker 3: This is good, I'm very much looking forward.
[32:05] Speaker 1: Two future cars. Good, that's what we got out of them.
[32:07] Speaker 1: From Chevy.
[32:08] Speaker 4: Well, yeah, two concepts that we'll really have a nod
[32:14] Speaker 4: to the future. I think he'll be blown away.
[32:17] Speaker 3: Mark.
[32:17] Speaker 2: Can I ask about you know, we've talked to other
[32:20] Speaker 2: obviously GM executives and engineers on this program who kind
[32:24] Speaker 2: of shot down the idea of a Corvette SUV. But
[32:28] Speaker 2: the brand is strong enough I think you'd probably agree
[32:33] Speaker 2: to stand on its own and other you know, Lamborghini
[32:37] Speaker 2: and Portia and other sports car brands have done so
[32:40] Speaker 2: well with SUV's Ferrari. Why not make a Corvette suv.
[32:46] Speaker 2: It seems like people would buy it.
[32:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard to say that people would buy it,
[32:52] Speaker 4: to be honest, I know there's interest in it, but
[32:55] Speaker 4: there's also interest in CTSV wagons.
[32:58] Speaker 3: Right, oh yes, it's sticks right.
[33:02] Speaker 4: Right with sticks and those are I mean, I love
[33:04] Speaker 4: that stuff, I do. I just you know, it's it's
[33:07] Speaker 4: hard because Corvette is American sports car, and it's really
[33:14] Speaker 4: hard to make a derivative of that, at least right
[33:19] Speaker 4: now that that fits that. And so I think there's
[33:25] Speaker 4: there's much more to go on the c A platform
[33:27] Speaker 4: in terms of design and creating a new car, and
[33:33] Speaker 4: so I think that's really good and I just you know,
[33:36] Speaker 4: I don't want to lose what we have in terms
[33:39] Speaker 4: of a pure American sports car on it for now,
[33:42] Speaker 4: and I never say never, but it's pretty tough, you know,
[33:46] Speaker 4: because we have things like CTSVS right that are sedans
[33:50] Speaker 4: that are killer, right, and we have now the V
[33:55] Speaker 4: Lyrics right and the v Optics that are extremely fun
[33:59] Speaker 4: to drive, right, And so we've got we've got some
[34:02] Speaker 4: pretty pretty great, you know, more utility based performance vehicles
[34:07] Speaker 4: that I think uh are are are our great choices
[34:11] Speaker 4: as well. But for now, you know, Electrified with the
[34:16] Speaker 4: zero one X and the E Ray is a pretty
[34:19] Speaker 4: awesome deal that you don't have to plug in. And
[34:21] Speaker 4: then I'd say, you know, the we just announced we're
[34:25] Speaker 4: putting a new V eight into Tanawanda, and so you
[34:29] Speaker 4: know we're gonna there's gonna be some great power trains.
[34:31] Speaker 4: That's all I'm going to say.
[34:33] Speaker 1: All Right, well, that's a good, good way to end it.
[34:35] Speaker 1: We'll look forward to seeing those in the future. Of
[34:37] Speaker 1: Mark Royce, thank you so much for joining us.
[34:40] Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for joining us, and thanks for building those things.
[34:42] Speaker 4: Thanks for having me on the show and and always
[34:44] Speaker 4: wonderful to Seaboat.
[34:53] Speaker 3: That was really cool.
[34:55] Speaker 2: Uh. Yeah, his his answer on motorsports is the best
[34:59] Speaker 2: one that I got.
[35:00] Speaker 1: I know, you know what I like about Mark. He
[35:02] Speaker 1: is plain spoken and he's diplomatic. He's not gonna tell
[35:06] Speaker 1: us what this cool uh you know world debut next
[35:09] Speaker 1: week is. He's he knows his rules, but he is
[35:13] Speaker 1: plain spoken.
[35:14] Speaker 2: I'm looking to speak to it. There's gonna be so
[35:16] Speaker 2: many cool things at Monterey.
[35:17] Speaker 3: You're so lucky. When are you actually gonna go?
[35:20] Speaker 1: I will be driving up to Monterey next Wednesday. I'll
[35:24] Speaker 1: be driving in Mercedes SL my bock.
[35:29] Speaker 2: Wo yes, so the l I guess that's a convertible, right.
[35:34] Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I'll be looking forward to seeing how that goes.
[35:38] Speaker 1: But yeah, going up Wednesday, and there are so many
[35:42] Speaker 1: debuts happening. I know you've sent a few that you're
[35:45] Speaker 1: excited about, Matt.
[35:47] Speaker 2: Well, I mean I'm excited about the you know, I
[35:50] Speaker 2: always like the kind of after market Seema show Winners
[35:54] Speaker 2: and Ring Brothers is going to show an aston Martin
[35:57] Speaker 2: that I'm super pumped up.
[35:58] Speaker 1: That's going to be very cool. That's gonna be a SL.
[36:01] Speaker 2: Stands for sport light. Right, Yes, that's the idea, is it?
[36:05] Speaker 2: You think still that.
[36:07] Speaker 1: No, No, I don't think so. You know, I drove
[36:11] Speaker 1: the new modern Essa that they launched I think twenty
[36:15] Speaker 1: twenty three, and this is the my Box version, which
[36:17] Speaker 1: is going to be heavier. Surely, surely it's going to
[36:19] Speaker 1: be heavier, but we don't care. It's going to be awesome.
[36:23] Speaker 2: Well, last time you drove to Monterey, you were in
[36:25] Speaker 2: the Lamborghini Rev welto.
[36:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a steep, steep, stiff kick in the
[36:31] Speaker 1: pants with a ticket on that.
[36:33] Speaker 2: Hopefully four ticket, plus you hired a lawyer, plus you
[36:37] Speaker 2: got points.
