[0:02] Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, Podcasts, radio news.
[0:08] Speaker 2: I'm Hannah Elliott and I'm Matt Miller.
[0:11] Speaker 3: This is Hot Pursuit. Coming up on today's podcast, we'll
[0:19] Speaker 3: talk Rivian. The ev maker has hit a few snags lately,
[0:22] Speaker 3: including announcing some job cuts. But I finally got the
[0:25] Speaker 3: chance to drive the R one s. I'm like the
[0:28] Speaker 3: last person on the planet to drive this big, expensive,
[0:31] Speaker 3: beautiful electric suv. That's all on the way on Hot Pursuit.
[0:36] Speaker 3: But first, Hannah, you just got back from Munich and
[0:39] Speaker 3: you are here with me in New York City.
[0:42] Speaker 1: Yes, live and living color. It's the best way. It's
[0:44] Speaker 1: so good to be here.
[0:46] Speaker 3: I missed you. It's been too like. I'm really glad
[0:49] Speaker 3: to see you. What was what? What was it like
[0:52] Speaker 3: at the last auto show? Left?
[0:54] Speaker 1: I think we can call the E A I A
[0:57] Speaker 1: the last Auto Show. It's really interesting. They do a
[1:00] Speaker 1: great job of sort of incorporating that whole show throughout
[1:03] Speaker 1: the city of Munich, so a lot of it is
[1:05] Speaker 1: accessible to the public. Each automaker creates these huge outdoor
[1:09] Speaker 1: stands with their new cars. BMW, Porschia, Mercedes. They all
[1:14] Speaker 1: have these big outdoor like exhibits that they set up,
[1:17] Speaker 1: and then there's also a conference center part where journalists
[1:20] Speaker 1: like me go in and you know, do executive interviews.
[1:23] Speaker 1: So it's kind of it's good, it's it's nice. It's
[1:27] Speaker 1: also polarizing. There are scheduled protests of people who are
[1:30] Speaker 1: unhappy about European transport in general next week. And someone
[1:35] Speaker 1: made the comment look out for any flying tomatoes.
[1:38] Speaker 3: So wait, people are unhappy about transport, they just want
[1:41] Speaker 3: to stay in one spot at all times or what
[1:43] Speaker 3: I think.
[1:43] Speaker 1: It's more it's more about the idea that, you know,
[1:46] Speaker 1: where electric regulations are going in the EU specifically. You know,
[1:51] Speaker 1: that's a very polarizing thing, especially when.
[1:54] Speaker 3: Because they're being peeled back or because they want to
[1:57] Speaker 3: get away from ice engines.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Fast, because they want to get it. Actually they don't
[2:01] Speaker 1: like the fact that that evs are being pushed.
[2:05] Speaker 3: Oh I get it.
[2:06] Speaker 1: Yeah interesting, Yeah, this is like the other side exactly,
[2:09] Speaker 1: Like this is a mobility conference, not necessarily a car show,
[2:13] Speaker 1: so they're really trying to say, oh, this is you know,
[2:15] Speaker 1: it's all about the future of mobility, which actually means
[2:19] Speaker 1: within the conference center walls there are a lot of
[2:22] Speaker 1: vendors from China, like I saw all of these Chinese
[2:25] Speaker 1: brands I had never even heard of before, and there
[2:27] Speaker 1: are lots of suppliers. It's kind of like a Sema
[2:30] Speaker 1: in a way too.
[2:31] Speaker 3: I wish I could go to Sema.
[2:32] Speaker 1: I think you will one day.
[2:33] Speaker 3: I would love to go to me. That would be
[2:35] Speaker 3: the most exciting because I love the aftermarket stuff. I
[2:39] Speaker 3: love modding cars, I love you know, buying accessories. And
[2:44] Speaker 3: I guess that's it.
[2:45] Speaker 1: This is your spiritual home.
[2:47] Speaker 3: But back to Munich. Yeah, the releases I saw were
[2:50] Speaker 3: kind of ev releases. We talked about the GLC, the
[2:55] Speaker 3: new GLC with Ola Colonius. Last week we talked about
[3:00] Speaker 3: We've talked about the IX three, the BMW Noya Classa,
[3:04] Speaker 3: which is about as traditional and boring as you could
[3:07] Speaker 3: get for a vehicle launch.
[3:09] Speaker 4: Right.
[3:09] Speaker 1: Well, some people are calling it really edgy and forward thinking.
[3:13] Speaker 1: You know, please, it just.
[3:14] Speaker 3: Looks like an X three, except for like the electric version.
[3:17] Speaker 1: I think for the Germans they think, you know, there
[3:20] Speaker 1: was a lot of talk about the that the Noya
[3:22] Speaker 1: Classa in general being really an edgy, strong step forward,
[3:27] Speaker 1: and honestly, I'm with you, I don't see that at all.
[3:30] Speaker 1: These are like incremental changes at best. Even the GLC
[3:35] Speaker 1: it has a different grill kind of but it still
[3:38] Speaker 1: looks exactly like old one.
[3:41] Speaker 3: I get that under the skin they are important changes,
[3:44] Speaker 3: a lot more range, much faster charging, but the look
[3:49] Speaker 3: of those vehicles isn't going to rock anybody's world. And
[3:53] Speaker 3: now the Noia Clasa, like the original concept vehicle that
[3:57] Speaker 3: they put out, now that was edgy, and I initially
[4:01] Speaker 3: hated it as we discussed, and now I think it's
[4:05] Speaker 3: kind of giving me two thousand and two vibes, which
[4:07] Speaker 3: are cool, so I'm liking it more and more. But
[4:10] Speaker 3: those like consumer hatchback, like big station wagons, those aren't
[4:16] Speaker 3: Those aren't.
[4:16] Speaker 1: No, No, these are These are like completely ubiquitous in
[4:20] Speaker 1: especially in Europe. One piece of good news that Mercedes announces,
[4:24] Speaker 1: you know, the Mercedes volume control on the steering well house.
[4:28] Speaker 1: Traditionally it's been the roller knob that you let it
[4:31] Speaker 1: feels really nice under your thumb, and then they went
[4:33] Speaker 1: to like the haptic.
[4:35] Speaker 2: You just you just move your things, which nobody liked.
[4:38] Speaker 1: They announced for the GLC they're bringing back the rolling knob,
[4:41] Speaker 1: which is great. And it's a rare case of when
[4:44] Speaker 1: an automaker actually like pivots. Yeah, and goes backward by
[4:48] Speaker 1: special requests.
[4:49] Speaker 3: Thank goodness they do that. It's like cracker barrel, you know.
[4:52] Speaker 3: They listen. We didn't like the new logo. We said, no,
[4:55] Speaker 3: we don't want the redesigned stores. Even President Trump cares
[4:59] Speaker 3: about that. It's like top of his list of things. Anyway,
[5:01] Speaker 3: I liked the Mercedes volume control in theory, and I
[5:05] Speaker 3: liked the way it looked, but it just didn't work
[5:07] Speaker 3: very well. By the way, speaking of incremental changes, did
[5:11] Speaker 3: they also show the new nine to eleven turbo?
[5:13] Speaker 1: They did dot two.
[5:17] Speaker 3: It's got like two it's got like two electric turbochargers, right,
[5:23] Speaker 3: so it's got a little tiny battery. It's like a
[5:25] Speaker 3: GTS plus.
[5:26] Speaker 1: Yeah. To me, honestly, it looks exactly the same. I
[5:31] Speaker 1: would be really hard pressed, and I don't. I wouldn't
[5:33] Speaker 1: even put any money down on being able to tell
[5:35] Speaker 1: the difference between the no way right nine one and
[5:37] Speaker 1: nine nine two or dot one dot two.
[5:39] Speaker 3: By the way, the thing that differentiates the turbos from
[5:45] Speaker 3: playing Jane nine to eleven is the big intakes in
[5:48] Speaker 3: the rear wheel wells right, and then the little.
[5:51] Speaker 1: Sometimes sometimes but not necessarily, do they.
[5:56] Speaker 3: Not all have that big hole in the rear wheel well,
[6:00] Speaker 3: because I don't love that look, and I'm not sure
[6:02] Speaker 3: is it necessary.
[6:03] Speaker 1: This is wading into the whole turbo conversation where turbo
[6:08] Speaker 1: is a marketing badge. Now at Porsia, you know, turbo
[6:12] Speaker 1: is an actual like variant line. So every every Portionia
[6:18] Speaker 1: now Turbo nine to eleven has a turbo charger. They're
[6:21] Speaker 1: all so like the term turbo doesn't actually necessarily mean
[6:26] Speaker 1: anything mechanical. It's like a it's a marketing.
[6:28] Speaker 3: Right, And the Tykwon obviously has no.
[6:30] Speaker 1: Turbo exactly, and they're still calling they.
[6:31] Speaker 3: Called the top end.
[6:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly.
[6:34] Speaker 3: It's super annoying. I wonder who at Porsia came up
[6:37] Speaker 3: with that idea. Who was like, there's not going to
[6:40] Speaker 3: be a turbo charger in any of these evs, but
[6:42] Speaker 3: we're going to call the best one a turbo, and
[6:45] Speaker 3: all of these ice cars are going to have turbo chargers,
[6:48] Speaker 3: but we're not going to call any of them turbo
[6:50] Speaker 3: except for the top one.
[6:51] Speaker 2: Some of them who was.
[6:52] Speaker 3: That was it.
[6:54] Speaker 4: Was?
[6:55] Speaker 3: It was it debt leg.
[6:56] Speaker 1: I would love it to know, I would you know,
[7:00] Speaker 1: they I would be so surprised. If we ever knew,
[7:04] Speaker 1: I don't know, someone in marketing, probably well.
[7:06] Speaker 3: I The thing is, I would love the turbo power
[7:10] Speaker 3: and the turbo ease, you know. And one time I
[7:13] Speaker 3: ran into Wolfgang Portia, either at the IA in Munich
[7:17] Speaker 3: years ago or at the or in Geneva, and I
[7:21] Speaker 3: asked him what his favorite nine to eleven was. And
[7:23] Speaker 3: I was so hopeful that he was going to say
[7:24] Speaker 3: something really cool, like the Steve McQueen, you know, but
[7:29] Speaker 3: he said, whatever, the newest turbo is, that's my favorite.
[7:32] Speaker 3: I was kind of bummed out about.
[7:34] Speaker 1: That, but I guess like a sales answer.
[7:36] Speaker 3: Well, but also it's like the most developed, most driver friendly,
[7:40] Speaker 3: you know, fastest, most powerful. The only thing I don't
[7:44] Speaker 3: like about it because I get I like the ease
[7:47] Speaker 3: and luxury of it. I don't like the the extra looks,
[7:51] Speaker 3: like the holes in the wheel well or the tail,
[7:54] Speaker 3: Like I just want to smooth nine to eleven. That's
[7:57] Speaker 3: kind of understated.
[7:58] Speaker 1: I kind of like the extra looks, you know, they
[8:02] Speaker 1: to me, they make the smoother one seem a little
[8:04] Speaker 1: bit boring and a little bit too flat somehow.
[8:08] Speaker 3: Well, by the way, didn't you guys drive yours to uh,
[8:13] Speaker 3: your like nine to nine one turbo to Monterey to
[8:15] Speaker 3: try and get more miles on it, and we got
[8:17] Speaker 3: two hundred thousand.
[8:17] Speaker 1: No, I think we're at one ninety seven and a
[8:20] Speaker 1: half or so. And in fact, next weekend we're going
[8:23] Speaker 1: to be driving that car to Denver from LA in
[8:26] Speaker 1: a day, specifically to add miles. It's my mom's seventieth birthday,
[8:31] Speaker 1: and so we're doing that drive number one so we
[8:33] Speaker 1: can bring the dog, but number two, so we get
[8:36] Speaker 1: miles on the nine to nine to one dot one.
[8:39] Speaker 3: You're bringing a nine to eleven turbo on a trip
[8:41] Speaker 3: Melley to Denver so that you can bring your German shepherd.
[8:44] Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, wouldn't use Yeah, this is very important.
[8:47] Speaker 3: I get it. Well, Happy birthday, missus Elliott. And uh,
[8:51] Speaker 3: I'm so proud of you guys for racking out the
[8:53] Speaker 3: miles on that vehicle. Coming up, we're gonna talk Rivian.
[8:57] Speaker 3: I'm Matt Miller for Hannah Elliott. This is Pursuit from
[9:00] Speaker 3: Bloomberg Radio in New York City. Now let's talk about
[9:12] Speaker 3: the Rivian R one s and like I am the
[9:16] Speaker 3: last person on earth to drive this. A bunch of
[9:19] Speaker 3: guys in my neighborhood. A bunch of dads already have one,
[9:23] Speaker 3: and I know you've driven at least two of these.
[9:26] Speaker 2: Got a flat wheel in the truck version.
[9:28] Speaker 1: You got a flat yeah, I got a Well it
[9:30] Speaker 1: was on it was on an off road like driving course, yes,
[9:34] Speaker 1: with other people. It was with other people, yeah, it was.
[9:36] Speaker 1: It was in a rather controlled environment, and I did
[9:38] Speaker 1: halfway change it well myself.
[9:41] Speaker 3: You know what, I don't think I've changed a wheel,
[9:44] Speaker 3: Actually no, I did. I changed a wheel recently on
[9:46] Speaker 3: a giant like GMC yukon that had twenty fours.
[9:50] Speaker 1: I remember you. I think you told me about that.
[9:52] Speaker 1: That's pretty cool.
[9:52] Speaker 3: Forever that was not satisfying.
[9:54] Speaker 1: I mean, you need a lot of leverage on that
[9:56] Speaker 1: crowbar to get I mean, what did you get used
[9:57] Speaker 1: to get the lug nuts?
[9:58] Speaker 3: It was easy. It took me like an hour, and
[10:01] Speaker 3: I felt like a total failure. But I remember years
[10:04] Speaker 3: ago I changed a wheel on a bug in Vienna
[10:07] Speaker 3: and I was two young ladies at the time.
[10:11] Speaker 1: A real man, I'm sure that that must have been
[10:13] Speaker 1: a high point.
[10:14] Speaker 3: All right, So this rivian like I have been wanting
[10:17] Speaker 3: to drive forever and haven't had the chance. But I
[10:20] Speaker 3: love the design so so so much.
[10:23] Speaker 1: Do you like the headlights.
[10:25] Speaker 3: I like the headlights, I like the shape I like
[10:28] Speaker 3: for me, the interior is also like extra Winter Class.
[10:32] Speaker 3: It reminds me of like a modern version of an
[10:34] Speaker 3: old Jeep Grand Wagon. Y.
[10:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, I can totally see got the plaid carpets.
[10:38] Speaker 3: It doesn't have a front bench, but it's pretty open
[10:41] Speaker 3: up there. And so I basically drool over them every
[10:46] Speaker 3: time I see him on the road. I look at
[10:48] Speaker 3: them every follow them every time they're on BAT, or
[10:52] Speaker 3: search for them on auto Trader. They always are too
[10:55] Speaker 3: expensive for me to really consider getting, but now I've
[11:00] Speaker 3: driven one and I was pretty disappointed. Oh no, yeah,
[11:05] Speaker 3: what was it?
[11:07] Speaker 2: First?
[11:08] Speaker 3: The software is just not there. For example, satellite radio
[11:14] Speaker 3: is so great because it uses a network of satellites
[11:19] Speaker 3: and not the Internet. However, yes, in an effort to
[11:22] Speaker 3: save money, Rivian does not have a satellite receiver. They
[11:26] Speaker 3: use the Internet to give you streaming satellite radio. So
[11:30] Speaker 3: you know, I'm leaving for work one morning early and
[11:33] Speaker 3: I listened to Bloomberg Radio all the way in so
[11:35] Speaker 3: I can.
[11:35] Speaker 2: Get in in the zone.
[11:37] Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and it's like no Internet found and it
[11:40] Speaker 3: takes me like fifteen or twenty minutes. That distracting before
[11:44] Speaker 3: I finally get enough internet to listen to the radio.
[11:47] Speaker 1: No, that's terrible, that's not good. And that sets the
[11:50] Speaker 1: tone probably for the full experience of when you're in
[11:52] Speaker 1: the vehicle. Yeah, because you're kind of like annoyed that
[11:55] Speaker 1: it's eating just what you wanted.
[11:57] Speaker 3: It's just ghetto, you know, I mean for a nine
[12:00] Speaker 3: thousand dollars vehicle, which it ends up being if you
[12:02] Speaker 3: buy the good model and dress it up, that's not acceptable.
[12:07] Speaker 3: The other thing is, I don't know about previous versions,
[12:10] Speaker 3: but this two point zero comes with a key card.
[12:13] Speaker 1: Oh yeah. I'm not a fan of the no.
[12:15] Speaker 3: Key fob, just like a credit card sized thing. And
[12:18] Speaker 3: I thought at first that's cool because I'll just put
[12:21] Speaker 3: it in my wallet and on them and think about it.
[12:23] Speaker 3: That doesn't work. You can't have it in your wallet
[12:26] Speaker 3: or in your p It has to literally be on
[12:28] Speaker 3: the center cha sol Yeah, and that's just like why
[12:33] Speaker 3: at that point, why not have an actual key?
[12:36] Speaker 2: Right?
[12:36] Speaker 1: You know?
[12:36] Speaker 2: It goes into an ignition.
[12:38] Speaker 3: Well yeah, and then I realized later it also causes
[12:41] Speaker 3: problems when you're when you want to lock the car
[12:44] Speaker 3: there's no lock button. So even if you walk away,
[12:47] Speaker 3: or at least when I walked away with a key
[12:49] Speaker 3: in my pocket, it never locks. It's candles that happened
[12:53] Speaker 3: normally flask they stick out, they stick out.
[12:55] Speaker 1: That's not a good look. And it's an invitation for
[12:57] Speaker 1: other people to come and open the door.
[12:59] Speaker 3: It says this is not locked. And then so I
[13:02] Speaker 3: googled it try to figure it out. I guess if
[13:04] Speaker 3: you're an owner, you can order a keyfob for extra money.
[13:07] Speaker 1: What about an app?
[13:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, you can do the app, and I imagine you
[13:11] Speaker 3: have to be an owner to do that. So as
[13:13] Speaker 3: a test driver, I wasn't able to do that, but
[13:17] Speaker 3: I guess you would if you owned a car. It
[13:19] Speaker 3: did say you could hold the key up on the
[13:21] Speaker 3: B pillar and that would lock the doors.
[13:23] Speaker 1: Yes, I remember doing that when I when I did the.
[13:26] Speaker 3: Drive, I couldn't make it work.
[13:27] Speaker 1: It really you had to like hold it just It's
[13:30] Speaker 1: one of those things where you have to hold it
[13:31] Speaker 1: just right and hold it there for a minute. It's
[13:33] Speaker 1: not intuitive, it's not easy. It's not quick. Yeah, and
[13:36] Speaker 1: also what happens when you're wearing gloves and you're fumbling
[13:39] Speaker 1: or it's cold out or you know, it's raining. It's
[13:43] Speaker 1: the last thing I want to do be standing there
[13:44] Speaker 1: with a little card trying to like lock or unlock that.
[13:47] Speaker 3: When you're introducing a new vehicle, you want to exceed expectations,
[13:51] Speaker 3: especially if it's you know, a ninety thousand dollars vehicle.
[13:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, and I just don't understand.
[13:57] Speaker 3: Why you would design and put out a new vehicle
[13:59] Speaker 3: that's not good.
[14:00] Speaker 2: I know, this is like why do a bad job?
[14:02] Speaker 1: I know, And philosophically, this is the problem that I've
[14:05] Speaker 1: always had with electric startup car companies, which is that
[14:10] Speaker 1: they seem to believe that because they're doing something brand
[14:13] Speaker 1: new that is quote unquote good for the environment, they
[14:16] Speaker 1: should get a pass on basic usability and basic practicality,
[14:21] Speaker 1: Like somehow we should overlook these annoyances and problems just
[14:26] Speaker 1: because we know, oh, well, we're virtuous now because we're
[14:29] Speaker 1: buying an electric feel that doesn't work amazing.
[14:33] Speaker 3: Like one of the good things they do is they
[14:34] Speaker 3: put a really nicely illustrated picture of the outside which
[14:38] Speaker 3: is cool.
[14:39] Speaker 1: Inside, yes, which is cool, and like that can be tailored.
[14:44] Speaker 1: Like I was speaking with the ribbing folks in Monterey
[14:47] Speaker 1: and they had a special like you know, Pebble Beach
[14:50] Speaker 1: version of their interior, which did look really cool, and they're,
[14:53] Speaker 1: you know, very proud that you can customize that drawing
[14:57] Speaker 1: to match your car. That's really cool, But that should
[14:59] Speaker 1: be like the icing on the cake, Like the rest
[15:02] Speaker 1: of the car has to actually be working.
[15:05] Speaker 3: And like intuitive, and so the turn signals, when you
[15:08] Speaker 3: try and cancel the turn signal, it just turns on
[15:10] Speaker 3: the opposite turn signal.
[15:11] Speaker 2: Oh no, no, you know.
[15:12] Speaker 3: And it's got these little little screens like a Kia
[15:16] Speaker 3: or a Hyundai. When you're switching lanes, it shows you
[15:19] Speaker 3: what's next to you, which is great, but it's so
[15:21] Speaker 3: small and hard to see that it's useless. But just
[15:24] Speaker 3: so many places where I feel like they could improve,
[15:27] Speaker 3: and I wish they already had before they charged that
[15:30] Speaker 3: much money, because otherwise, why don't I buy an EV nine,
[15:33] Speaker 3: which is like.
[15:34] Speaker 1: We always go back to that, Yeah, we always go
[15:36] Speaker 1: back to the Kia EV nine or yeah, yeah, sorry,
[15:39] Speaker 1: that's right, yeah, like yeah, of course we're always going ionic. Yeah,
[15:43] Speaker 1: but it's both the I agree and for this what
[15:47] Speaker 1: is this ninety thousand dollars? Yeah, or so yeah, it's
[15:50] Speaker 1: too much. It has to be better. Where do you
[15:53] Speaker 1: think about how it drives?
[15:55] Speaker 3: It drives okay, but it just wasn't noting my socks off.
[16:01] Speaker 3: And if you put it, I figured a lot of
[16:03] Speaker 3: people don't like the way it drives because they probably
[16:05] Speaker 3: put it in sports mode, which lowers the suspension to
[16:09] Speaker 3: the second to last level. And then since you're there
[16:11] Speaker 3: and looking at it and seeing sport, you probably pushed
[16:14] Speaker 3: all the way down, of course, and then on you know,
[16:17] Speaker 3: normal American streets, which you know need a refresh. It's
[16:21] Speaker 3: a horrible experience. So what I ended up doing halfway
[16:24] Speaker 3: through my week with it is putting it on the
[16:28] Speaker 3: highest setting for driving, which improves you.
[16:32] Speaker 2: Know, d yes, it improves the ride.
[16:36] Speaker 3: Over exactly the Bronx or Parkway or the west Side Highway,
[16:40] Speaker 3: but it doesn't improve handling obviously, and it doesn't help
[16:44] Speaker 3: your range. So I don't care that much about those things.
[16:47] Speaker 3: And I'm driving a big truck. I like to be
[16:50] Speaker 3: high up, and it does that really well, but just
[16:53] Speaker 3: not something I'm willing to pay a lot of money for.
[16:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's interesting. I've seen a couple of
[16:58] Speaker 1: my neighbors who used to I have Tesla's around the neighborhood.
[17:01] Speaker 1: They have now switched to Rivian's. And I think that
[17:03] Speaker 1: is because of sort of the politics around Elon Musk,
[17:06] Speaker 1: so Rivian has emerged as maybe like a viable alternative
[17:13] Speaker 1: to people who don't want to be seen to be
[17:14] Speaker 1: supporting Elon.
[17:16] Speaker 3: I'm Matt Miller along with Hannah Elliott. You're listening to
[17:19] Speaker 3: Hot Pursuit.
[17:20] Speaker 4: We have more coming up after this.
[17:32] Speaker 3: This brings me to what I am most excited about,
[17:36] Speaker 3: and that is the Scout. Have you spent any time
[17:40] Speaker 3: looking at the Scout?
[17:41] Speaker 1: No?
[17:42] Speaker 3: So the Scout for me, it checks so many boxes.
[17:47] Speaker 3: The problem is it's so far off that we don't
[17:49] Speaker 3: know what it's really going to be like. But it
[17:51] Speaker 3: is an actual body on frame truck, so it will
[17:54] Speaker 3: have the rugged usability of like a tahoe or an expedition, right,
[18:01] Speaker 3: And it looks big. It's going to be bigger than
[18:05] Speaker 3: the Rivian, which I like. Some people will think that's
[18:08] Speaker 3: too big.
[18:09] Speaker 1: It's pretty big because the Rivian itself is a seven
[18:12] Speaker 1: passenger vehicle.
[18:14] Speaker 3: Right, But I mean those seven passengers are sitting pretty.
[18:16] Speaker 1: Cool as a kid, so their children hopefully.
[18:18] Speaker 3: It's I hope there's a little bit more interior room.
[18:21] Speaker 3: I love the design of the Scout. It looks really
[18:24] Speaker 3: cool and I've spent because I'm in the Ribban, I
[18:28] Speaker 3: spent a lot of time looking at the Scout on
[18:29] Speaker 3: the website. And it can have a range extender. So
[18:33] Speaker 3: they're promising now at least three hundred and fifty miles
[18:35] Speaker 3: of range, which is can be good by the time
[18:38] Speaker 3: it comes out. I hope it's even more. And you
[18:42] Speaker 3: can buy a little motor. You can option a little
[18:44] Speaker 3: motor in there that's an e Rev so it doesn't
[18:47] Speaker 3: drive the vehicle, but it charges the battery and they
[18:50] Speaker 3: say that will lift the range to five hundred miles
[18:54] Speaker 3: in total. So it's a truck, it's an suv. It
[18:58] Speaker 3: has fully decent to massive range and it looks imposing
[19:04] Speaker 3: and can hold a lot of child.
[19:05] Speaker 1: Yes, and we should say that this is the American
[19:08] Speaker 1: automotive startup that was founded in twenty twenty two but
[19:11] Speaker 1: is now backed by Volkswagen, so it's got some serious backing.
[19:15] Speaker 1: It might actually happen well.
[19:17] Speaker 3: And it's tied closely to Rivian, right because Volkswagen owns
[19:20] Speaker 3: a significant steak in Rivian and they've said that they're
[19:23] Speaker 3: going to use Rivian technology on the scout, So if
[19:25] Speaker 3: you like some Rivian technology, which by the way, is
[19:30] Speaker 3: also sorely lacking right because they have a four hundred
[19:33] Speaker 3: volt architecture, it's like using a really thin hose to
[19:35] Speaker 3: try and squirt a lot of water through. But this
[19:38] Speaker 3: scout will be eight hundred volt architecture, so it'll charge
[19:42] Speaker 3: much faster than the Rivian.
[19:43] Speaker 1: And that's what VW's using throughout Basically all of their
[19:46] Speaker 1: platforms are trying to get throughout the company. I mean
[19:49] Speaker 1: it does look it actually looks cool.
[19:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, I like it. I'm pretty excited. They'll offer it. Obviously,
[19:53] Speaker 3: a truck and an suv version. For me, I've found
[19:57] Speaker 3: recently that pickup truck doesn't offer that much utility. The
[20:00] Speaker 3: most I'm doing is towing like a motorcycle on a boat,
[20:02] Speaker 3: So I'm not putting anything in the bed. I just
[20:05] Speaker 3: want Now, this is one of the problems. I do
[20:08] Speaker 3: want three rows.
[20:09] Speaker 1: And I think for your kids exactly.
[20:11] Speaker 3: Yeah, for my kids, for my mom, for the dogs
[20:16] Speaker 3: if I forget some. So they don't yet have a
[20:20] Speaker 3: three row version, but I can't imagine they don't try
[20:22] Speaker 3: and cash in on a like suburban competitor.
[20:25] Speaker 1: I was just going to you know what, this is
[20:26] Speaker 1: making me think of, how's the Escalade doing the Escalade
[20:30] Speaker 1: EV love.
[20:31] Speaker 3: Well, No, the Escalade EV is way too expensive. It's
[20:34] Speaker 3: like one hundred and fifty.
[20:35] Speaker 2: Grand it is. But we liked it, right, I mean,
[20:38] Speaker 2: I love the look of it.
[20:39] Speaker 3: It has obviously a lot of room. I felt this
[20:42] Speaker 3: is the first time that I really felt a vehicle
[20:44] Speaker 3: was too heavy.
[20:46] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I remember that, which I was like, wow,
[20:48] Speaker 1: this really maybe years amazing.
[20:51] Speaker 3: They'll have another go like the Escalator and the Hummer
[20:54] Speaker 3: I love because of the range. They're so huge and imposing.
[20:57] Speaker 3: They're just rolling houses. Yeah, but the price of the
[21:01] Speaker 3: Escalade IQ leaves me out. Even an Escalade ESV like
[21:07] Speaker 3: with a gas powered engine.
[21:09] Speaker 1: Well, you don't play in the NBA.
[21:10] Speaker 3: I mean exactly, it's if you did, it's not the
[21:12] Speaker 3: right look.
[21:13] Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not.
[21:14] Speaker 3: I think if they don't have an EV version, I'm
[21:16] Speaker 3: just gonna go with a suburban, like a Chevy suburban. Yeah,
[21:20] Speaker 3: they still end up being pretty expensive once you put
[21:22] Speaker 3: the six point two liter V eight. But I'll have
[21:25] Speaker 3: to have that because I wouldn't be able to live
[21:27] Speaker 3: with myself and the smaller displacement just to save a
[21:31] Speaker 3: few grand. But yeah, I feel like there's there's no
[21:34] Speaker 3: real competitor. I am going to drive the Ford Expedition.
[21:39] Speaker 3: Oh what do they call the big version? The King Ranch?
[21:44] Speaker 2: The King Ranch?
[21:45] Speaker 3: The King Ranch and the Platinum and the and the
[21:46] Speaker 3: Basic all come in an extra like a Mega version,
[21:49] Speaker 3: and they call it like the Expedition Mega. But I can't.
[21:51] Speaker 1: Oh, you know what, that's so funny you mentioned that
[21:53] Speaker 1: because I'm doing a big assignment on Texas in October
[21:58] Speaker 1: and I'm going to take a huge road trip and
[22:00] Speaker 1: I'm going to have a big Expedition King Ranch for
[22:04] Speaker 1: the road trip. So this might work out very well
[22:06] Speaker 1: for us, because I'll have some thoughts.
[22:08] Speaker 3: I'm sure, are you going to actually go to the
[22:11] Speaker 3: King Ranch because there is a ride?
[22:14] Speaker 1: Don't? Maybe I should? That'd be a great idea.
[22:18] Speaker 3: Actually, Okay, so I just loicked up the long version
[22:21] Speaker 3: of the Expedition is called the Max.
[22:22] Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna try it out.
[22:24] Speaker 3: I've been super impressed lately with Ford and Lincoln vehicles,
[22:29] Speaker 3: especially the interior and the sort of luxury of them.
[22:32] Speaker 3: But again, this is gonna have just a three and
[22:35] Speaker 3: a half liter V six and they haven't made any
[22:41] Speaker 3: noise about putting out a bigger motor and there's no
[22:44] Speaker 3: hybrid version. Like I feel like, if we're gonna live
[22:47] Speaker 3: in the Trump era and we're gonna deregulate everything and
[22:51] Speaker 3: cancel laws and stuff, why doesn't Ford put a six
[22:55] Speaker 3: point two liter V eight back in their trucks and
[22:57] Speaker 3: their SUVs. Like standards are getting thrown out, nobody needs
[23:01] Speaker 3: to buy evy credits anymore, like they're saving car. There
[23:06] Speaker 3: was a story David Welch and Keith Notton put out
[23:09] Speaker 3: a story last week that Ford has saved one and
[23:11] Speaker 3: a half billion dollars by no longer buying those carbon credits.
[23:16] Speaker 2: So yeah, you might as well with the big engine.
[23:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, it would definitely sell you. I mean you're not
[23:22] Speaker 1: alone met all.
[23:24] Speaker 3: Right, that's it for this week. What have you got
[23:26] Speaker 3: coming up?
[23:26] Speaker 1: There are a couple cool car things happening in LA
[23:29] Speaker 1: this weekend. There's a show in Long Beach. My friends
[23:32] Speaker 1: from Texas actually that do the handbuilt show. It's a
[23:36] Speaker 1: big motorcycle show. They're doing a similar one in Long
[23:39] Speaker 1: Beach this weekend. So I may find myself there and
[23:43] Speaker 1: then yeah, like I said, next week, at the end
[23:45] Speaker 1: of the week, driving to Denver.
[23:47] Speaker 3: Very very cool.
[23:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, what about you.
[23:49] Speaker 3: I'm actually gonna drive the new Ducati xdavel S.
[23:55] Speaker 1: What does that mean.
[23:57] Speaker 3: It's Dukatti's big muscle bike, but it's a feat forward cruiser,
[24:01] Speaker 3: so no rear sets on this. I'm pretty excited about that.
[24:06] Speaker 3: I actually owned an xdovel and like two or three
[24:08] Speaker 3: regular Dovels in the past, so I'm pumped about that. Plus,
[24:13] Speaker 3: speaking of car shows, my buddy Philip is having his
[24:15] Speaker 3: Turtle Invitational. Oh cool in Bedford at the end of
[24:19] Speaker 3: the night. I'm gonna go and I may even speak
[24:22] Speaker 3: on a panel.
[24:22] Speaker 1: Oh good, okay, great.
[24:24] Speaker 3: Moved by the brass here at work. So yeah, there's
[24:27] Speaker 3: a lot of u And like I said, I'm gonna
[24:29] Speaker 3: drive that Expedition Max and see if it'll be big
[24:32] Speaker 3: enough for my family.
[24:33] Speaker 1: Let's find out. So that does it for this week's show.
