[0:02] Speaker 1: Bloomberg Audio Studios, Podcasts, radio news. I'm Matt Miller and
[0:11] Speaker 1: I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is Hot Pursuit.
[0:20] Speaker 2: All right, Merry Christmas and Happy New Years.
[0:22] Speaker 1: Happy New Year, Welcome back from Spain.
[0:24] Speaker 3: Thank you.
[0:25] Speaker 2: It's going to be back in this country. You don't
[0:27] Speaker 2: know what you've got till it's gone, you know what
[0:29] Speaker 2: I'm saying.
[0:29] Speaker 1: Oh, I can relate, I can relate. And yeah, I
[0:33] Speaker 1: went to I was in Denver for Christmas and happy
[0:36] Speaker 1: to be back.
[0:37] Speaker 2: How was the drive there? You drove there? Back from LA?
[0:40] Speaker 1: We escaped all weather. We the way over, we spent
[0:46] Speaker 1: the night in Grand Junction, and the way back we
[0:48] Speaker 1: did it in a single day, and we escaped all weather.
[0:52] Speaker 1: It was snowing in Grand Junction on our way back
[0:55] Speaker 1: and we missed it.
[0:56] Speaker 2: So how does get a single day trip from day
[1:00] Speaker 2: to LA? How long does that take?
[1:01] Speaker 1: You can do it. You can do it. It's like fifteen hours.
[1:05] Speaker 1: It's fourteen to fifteen hours. The good thing is, which
[1:08] Speaker 1: I didn't realize, but there's a time change, so you
[1:12] Speaker 1: actually gain an hour of daylight going back west, which
[1:15] Speaker 1: buys you some time.
[1:17] Speaker 2: You did it in your corvette. Oh, I saw a
[1:19] Speaker 2: picture of you with a Corvette.
[1:22] Speaker 1: Yes, no, that would have been actually epic. No, I
[1:27] Speaker 1: would not trust the Corvette or the Corvette's tires.
[1:32] Speaker 2: So on that track, so what vehicle did you choose.
[1:36] Speaker 1: For this adventag chat in a Porsche Cayenne GTS, which
[1:41] Speaker 1: worked fabulously.
[1:43] Speaker 2: A new one though, yeah, a new one. Oh I see, okay,
[1:46] Speaker 2: so you didn't choose Honestly.
[1:48] Speaker 1: We would have. The truth is, we would have done it.
[1:51] Speaker 1: We would have had a lot of fun, and I wanted,
[1:53] Speaker 1: I actually want a plan to do this another time.
[1:56] Speaker 1: We would have done it in an old car or
[1:59] Speaker 1: you know, twenty fourteen era turbo, but didn't have winter
[2:03] Speaker 1: tires on those cars, so you know, you got to
[2:06] Speaker 1: think about the rubber.
[2:07] Speaker 2: That makes sense. And the kyangts. I love that car.
[2:11] Speaker 2: For a while, they went they stepped down to the
[2:14] Speaker 2: V six, you know, to let the turbo be the
[2:18] Speaker 2: king of the jungle. But now they've gone back to
[2:21] Speaker 2: the four leader V eight, which is sounds. It's a
[2:25] Speaker 2: great motor, it's a great power plant.
[2:27] Speaker 1: It rumbles like it really lets you know, and it's
[2:30] Speaker 1: really fast. So yeah, we had fun.
[2:33] Speaker 2: There was I can't remember where I saw it. But
[2:37] Speaker 2: someone posed a question, what's the perfect cylinder size? And
[2:41] Speaker 2: I don't know if they were after power or if
[2:43] Speaker 2: they were after fuel economy, but I think the industry
[2:47] Speaker 2: has come up with essentially, if you're leaning towards luxury,
[2:51] Speaker 2: if you're leaning towards shove, half liter is kind of
[2:55] Speaker 2: the the sweet spot for cylinder size. So that's why
[2:59] Speaker 2: the four le V eight is such a good power plant.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Porsche uses that, Mercedes uses that. I like, you know,
[3:08] Speaker 2: the big jugs, so like I like the Harley Davidson,
[3:13] Speaker 2: like you know, two Leader or SNS two Leader twins,
[3:16] Speaker 2: but apparently five hundred CC's and if I'm wrong, someone
[3:22] Speaker 2: correct me has been you know, sort of picked out
[3:26] Speaker 2: by the industry in general. So a three Lider six, right,
[3:30] Speaker 2: that's what Porsche uses, or a four Leader V eight.
[3:33] Speaker 1: I also think. And I am not an engineer, so
[3:36] Speaker 1: Phil Frieda right in and educate me. But you know
[3:40] Speaker 1: that there is a end point to how much power
[3:45] Speaker 1: you can get out of any engine, right, Yeah, They're
[3:48] Speaker 1: not infinite things. And I don't want to say that
[3:51] Speaker 1: that particular configuration has been max out, but it does
[3:55] Speaker 1: seem like it's it's at a really evolved point and
[4:02] Speaker 1: any any further development might compromise other other factors.
[4:08] Speaker 2: Right, or only yield like marginal.
[4:11] Speaker 1: Marginal, Like you're better You're better off trying to make
[4:15] Speaker 1: the design of the car lighter or more aerodynamic than
[4:19] Speaker 1: try to, you know, dial down that engine even more
[4:22] Speaker 1: and more and more for very small incremental improvements.
[4:26] Speaker 2: Right, And I mean you know they keep doing it
[4:28] Speaker 2: in the search for more efficient moders. Right, So that's
[4:34] Speaker 2: why they put the turbos on and they're really high compression.
[4:38] Speaker 2: But or you go hybrid, Yeah, I mean bringing a
[4:41] Speaker 2: battery and changes the equation completely. But we should have
[4:45] Speaker 2: someone who really knows what she or he is talking about.
[4:49] Speaker 1: Okay, that could be one of our goals for twenty
[4:52] Speaker 1: twenty five.
[4:52] Speaker 2: That's in fact, if you have a guest, dear listener,
[4:55] Speaker 2: if you have a guest who's like Kevin Cameron is
[4:58] Speaker 2: the guy I would choose if the we're a motorcycle show.
[5:01] Speaker 2: But if you have like the Kevin Cameron of automotive
[5:04] Speaker 2: who can tell tell us, you know, what's the ideal
[5:06] Speaker 2: cylinder size, how far can they push it? You know,
[5:10] Speaker 2: I always say there's more. There's no replacement for displacement.
[5:14] Speaker 2: But at some point obviously we're not working with ten
[5:18] Speaker 2: liter eleven leter motors, so now at some point it
[5:21] Speaker 2: doesn't make any sense to get bigger and bigger.
[5:23] Speaker 1: I bet we could call our friends at BMW or
[5:26] Speaker 1: Porsche or Mercedes.
[5:28] Speaker 2: Or how come they never supply us with like a
[5:31] Speaker 2: good engineer. Why doesn't somebody I.
[5:33] Speaker 1: Think asking you shall receive and.
[5:34] Speaker 4: Stuttgart say, I think we need to give these guys
[5:37] Speaker 4: a good engineer, or maybe from Portia Andreas Pointinger, we
[5:42] Speaker 4: should try and get him on the show. And all right,
[5:46] Speaker 4: so you got this ticket on your way to Pebble.
[5:50] Speaker 1: Beach, right, Yes, and in a Lamborghini hybrid. Speaking of
[5:53] Speaker 1: hybrid's called the riveelto which.
[5:56] Speaker 2: I have yet to even see one in person.
[5:58] Speaker 1: But it's a very expensive you know, six hundred thousand
[6:02] Speaker 1: dollars plus car over a thousand horse power. And yes,
[6:08] Speaker 1: I got a ticket in the course of my doing
[6:11] Speaker 1: research for our Deer readers.
[6:13] Speaker 2: It was part of the team.
[6:15] Speaker 1: Yes, and so I did hire one of those legal
[6:20] Speaker 1: fix it firms to try to argue my case that
[6:24] Speaker 1: I was not driving recklessly. It was an empty road
[6:27] Speaker 1: in the in the mid morning. You don't know on
[6:30] Speaker 1: a Tuesday, and this was the first time I was
[6:32] Speaker 1: in the car. I was unfamiliar with its great power
[6:35] Speaker 1: and dynamics, so that unfortunately did not work.
[6:40] Speaker 2: Wait did but this you sent this lawyer for you
[6:43] Speaker 2: to court, right, you didn't go to court yourself.
[6:44] Speaker 1: I was not going to go to Keen County and
[6:48] Speaker 1: argue my case on random days. It didn't seem like
[6:52] Speaker 1: a great use of time. Also, I'm not a trained
[6:54] Speaker 1: legal authority, so yes, I hired someone on the advice
[6:57] Speaker 1: of multiple people who had said that.
[6:59] Speaker 2: They had I've always had success that way. Briskally, it's
[7:03] Speaker 2: like the system is, it's a bribery system. So you
[7:06] Speaker 2: basically pay somebody who's admitted to the bar locally and
[7:10] Speaker 2: they drink beers or they'll judge all the time, so
[7:12] Speaker 2: they figure it out and you get to find a pose.
[7:15] Speaker 1: So I was gonna say that's the key. You you know,
[7:18] Speaker 1: you want to really avoid the points, especially in California,
[7:21] Speaker 1: and I don't haven't. I didn't have any points on
[7:23] Speaker 1: my license. Didn't to avoid that, and that fee was
[7:30] Speaker 1: six hundred dollars to make. I didn't know how much
[7:33] Speaker 1: the ticket was going to be at the time, but
[7:34] Speaker 1: that fee was six hundred dollars, so I thought, okay.
[7:37] Speaker 2: Well, let's the lawyer was six hundred dollars. Yes, wow,
[7:40] Speaker 2: that's more than New York.
[7:41] Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, So anyway, the lawyer succeeded in getting the
[7:48] Speaker 1: court they pushed a couple times, so it was pushed
[7:51] Speaker 1: and then it was pushed again, rescheduled, and unfortunately in December,
[7:57] Speaker 1: uh were the word came back down from on high
[8:00] Speaker 1: that the ticket was not forgiven. The officer was in
[8:03] Speaker 1: court each court date. He really had it out for me.
[8:07] Speaker 1: And I did not get the ticket reduced, and I
[8:09] Speaker 1: did get a point on my license, oh one point
[8:13] Speaker 1: one point, so that's really good. And I did get
[8:16] Speaker 1: the money back from the legal firm, who were very
[8:19] Speaker 1: sad that they didn't win the case, and they gave
[8:21] Speaker 1: me a refund. And the cost of the ticket was
[8:25] Speaker 1: like four hundred and eighty five dollars, which was actually
[8:27] Speaker 1: less nice than the cost of the lawyer. So it's okay,
[8:32] Speaker 1: it's fine's experience.
[8:34] Speaker 2: I think you can get what four points a year,
[8:38] Speaker 2: right or six points in two years?
[8:40] Speaker 1: Yeah? Yes, and they go away after a certain amount
[8:43] Speaker 1: of time.
[8:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm pretty sure obviously California is going to
[8:48] Speaker 2: be different than New York. But I took like a
[8:50] Speaker 2: defensive driving course, which was basically like detention in high school.
[8:55] Speaker 2: You show up, the guy shows you a video like
[8:58] Speaker 2: blood Runs Red on the highway, and and then like
[9:01] Speaker 2: you do nothing for the next four hours and you
[9:03] Speaker 2: get points reduced from your's.
[9:05] Speaker 1: I've heard of that.
[9:06] Speaker 2: I might have.
[9:08] Speaker 1: I've sort of been privy to that.
[9:10] Speaker 2: All right, so well it's your first point.
[9:13] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's my first point.
[9:14] Speaker 2: That's that's not bad.
[9:16] Speaker 1: It's a notch in my belt. Yeah, So I am
[9:18] Speaker 1: going to be very careful driving because I don't want
[9:20] Speaker 1: to get more. But I thought you would appreciate that update.
[9:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, I do, that's what I It's a bummer. But
[9:26] Speaker 2: I'm glad that the lawyer at least gave you your
[9:28] Speaker 2: money back because.
[9:29] Speaker 1: Completely completely, because that would have been really annoying. And
[9:33] Speaker 1: I think I am not a like a new Year's
[9:37] Speaker 1: resolution person at all. But someone asked me the other day,
[9:40] Speaker 1: what's your New Year's resolution? And I just came out
[9:42] Speaker 1: with leave the past in the past. So I think
[9:44] Speaker 1: that's going to be my resolution this year, because it
[9:47] Speaker 1: was like it just came and that tickets in the past.
[9:51] Speaker 1: It was from last year, and I'm actually glad it
[9:52] Speaker 1: was resolved so you can move fresh into twenty twenty five.
[9:56] Speaker 2: Nice. Yeah, I don't think I have any My nigger's
[9:59] Speaker 2: resolution is to buy more motorcycles. You know, okay, and
[10:05] Speaker 2: focus on that. You ride motorcycles, right, But I do,
[10:09] Speaker 2: But I.
[10:09] Speaker 1: Don't own one at the moment. And honestly, it's it's
[10:14] Speaker 1: not a passion like it is for you. Yes, I've
[10:17] Speaker 1: ridden for ten years, but it's not a passion in
[10:21] Speaker 1: the way that I know true riders have the passion.
[10:25] Speaker 2: I just need it for mental health. Yeah.
[10:27] Speaker 1: See, yeah, I and I that is a real thing.
[10:30] Speaker 1: It's not something that lives in my brain. But I
[10:33] Speaker 1: know that it's a real thing.
[10:35] Speaker 2: By the way I remember it, I think a couple
[10:36] Speaker 2: of weeks ago, I said my goal for twenty twenty five,
[10:39] Speaker 2: I guess I do kind of have a ka. It
[10:42] Speaker 2: was to ride motorcycles with you. Oh yes, And did
[10:46] Speaker 2: I tell you about the invitation I got for February. No,
[10:50] Speaker 2: I was invited to Austin to ride the whole new
[10:54] Speaker 2: Harley Davidson twenty twenty five lineup.
[10:56] Speaker 1: Oh awesome, that's great. So maybe you can go, isn't
[11:00] Speaker 1: it when in February? End of February, Okay, that could work.
[11:05] Speaker 2: It'll be my first Austin trip of the year before
[11:08] Speaker 2: the GP, which is a month later.
[11:10] Speaker 1: So cool. I'm looking forward to going to the GP too. Yes, cool,
[11:14] Speaker 1: that's great.
[11:15] Speaker 2: It's so much better in America because nobody, nobody goes
[11:18] Speaker 2: in America, right, So if you go to a Moto
[11:21] Speaker 2: GP in Italy or in Spain, they're packed and even
[11:25] Speaker 2: if you get into the paddock, they're completely heaving, and
[11:28] Speaker 2: the to use a British expression, and the the pilots
[11:32] Speaker 2: want nothing to do with the public because they're just swamped.
[11:35] Speaker 2: But in Austin, since no one knows what Moto GP
[11:38] Speaker 2: is in America, they're empty and you can just walk
[11:41] Speaker 2: into the garages and they're everybody's happy to pose for
[11:45] Speaker 2: a picture. You know what?
[11:46] Speaker 1: That makes me think too, no line for the bathroom,
[11:48] Speaker 1: which is a very mundane thing to think.
[11:51] Speaker 2: But also yeah, for sure, no line for anything, which
[11:56] Speaker 2: is great.
[11:57] Speaker 3: All right.
[11:58] Speaker 2: I had a chance to sit down with your husband, yes,
[12:03] Speaker 2: on the eve of I heard, or on the day after, yeah,
[12:06] Speaker 2: the launch of his new project with t w R,
[12:09] Speaker 2: the the Jaguar XJS, which which I had a great
[12:15] Speaker 2: time seeing it at the Classic Car Club here and
[12:17] Speaker 2: seeing you and seeing everybody. By the way, we saw
[12:19] Speaker 2: Alex Roy who has just achieved the first part of
[12:22] Speaker 2: his new full self driving cannonball run. Did you see that?
[12:25] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[12:26] Speaker 2: I did.
[12:26] Speaker 1: We should have him back on.
[12:27] Speaker 2: Definitely, we should definitely have him. He's gonna do it
[12:29] Speaker 2: two more times, so he's going three times coast to coast. Anyway,
[12:34] Speaker 2: I did the interview of Magnus Walker myself and we
[12:39] Speaker 2: want to play that for the listeners right now. Thank
[12:41] Speaker 2: you very much for the invite. I had a great time.
[12:44] Speaker 2: The Classic Car Club was a really is a really
[12:46] Speaker 2: cool venue, and I was gonna say it was it
[12:47] Speaker 2: will be was a really cool venue.
[12:49] Speaker 3: It still is. It still is a very very cool venue.
[12:51] Speaker 5: But they're moving right, they're all moving uptown here like
[12:55] Speaker 5: ten Bucks episode.
[12:55] Speaker 2: Anyway, it doesn't matter where it was because the highlight
[12:59] Speaker 2: was there in the center of the room. It's a
[13:02] Speaker 2: Jaguar XJS or it started life as a Jaguar XJS, right.
[13:07] Speaker 2: I think one of the more iconic silhouettes out there
[13:12] Speaker 2: with the buttresses in the back. At least other the
[13:14] Speaker 2: hardtop version. Tell me about first of all what it
[13:18] Speaker 2: is now, what did you turn it into?
[13:20] Speaker 5: First of all, thanks for coming out. Great to see you,
[13:22] Speaker 5: not in the suit, which was great. We love to
[13:26] Speaker 5: say over there, it's not a JAG, it's a TWA
[13:29] Speaker 5: exactly Tom Walkinson Shaw Racing. So the new iteration of
[13:32] Speaker 5: TWI is founded by Tom's son, Fergus And for those
[13:36] Speaker 5: that don't know, Tom Walkinson Shaw British Heritage Motorsports Engineering
[13:42] Speaker 5: race team and Tom was a racer won the British
[13:46] Speaker 5: toin Card Championship in eighty four eighty five. But the
[13:49] Speaker 5: real claim to fame is they were JAGS Motorsports Division
[13:54] Speaker 5: and they won outright at the nineteen eighty eight Lamon
[13:57] Speaker 5: twenty four hour with Jazz. TWR also helped develop the
[14:03] Speaker 5: iconic XJR XJA fifteen and the Holy Grail JAG the
[14:07] Speaker 5: x J two twenty. These were all developed through TWR
[14:11] Speaker 5: in conjunction with JAG. So what we debuted was the
[14:14] Speaker 5: East Coast debut. The global debut was in LA on Tuesday,
[14:17] Speaker 5: November nineteenth. What it is it starts life as a
[14:20] Speaker 5: it's arrest on what I guess you'd say it starts life.
[14:23] Speaker 5: The donor car is the Jag XJS, which we know
[14:26] Speaker 5: followed the iconic E type. The E type Jag was
[14:29] Speaker 5: the most beloved car, and the XGS followed it and
[14:32] Speaker 5: actually never lived up to the success that the E
[14:34] Speaker 5: type had. But it was in production for twenty one
[14:37] Speaker 5: years and ironically sold more units than the Jag, but
[14:40] Speaker 5: it just never had the umph and sort of iconic
[14:43] Speaker 5: status of the Jag. And it was a V twelve car.
[14:46] Speaker 5: I have one in nineteen eighty eight Speed twelve, so
[14:49] Speaker 5: you think it's going to be fast, but three speed
[14:51] Speaker 5: automatic in stock form, these cars are what I call lazy.
[14:55] Speaker 5: The JAG version what the TWR version is. First of all,
[14:58] Speaker 5: the engines pumped out to five point six leader six
[15:01] Speaker 5: hundred and sixty horse power, five hundred and forty foot
[15:04] Speaker 5: pounds of torque, six speed Tramac manual transmission with an
[15:09] Speaker 5: all new wide bodied carbon fiber aerodynamic Imster inspired GT
[15:16] Speaker 5: Touring inspired seventies and eighties wide bodied conversion.
[15:20] Speaker 2: It's super light, right, I think I heard a stat
[15:22] Speaker 2: that it was only thirty four hundred pounds.
[15:23] Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, it's a lot. It's light, It's got a
[15:25] Speaker 5: lot of power. It's two wheel drive. The only sort
[15:28] Speaker 5: of original components to the Dona XGS, to the engine
[15:31] Speaker 5: block which has been pumped out to five point six
[15:34] Speaker 5: from five point four. Leader horsepower has been tripled. Like
[15:38] Speaker 5: I said, the all new carbon fiber body sections and panels,
[15:42] Speaker 5: all new suspension, six pot front piston caliber breaks four
[15:46] Speaker 5: rears eighteen and nineteen inch wields with soft sticky rubber
[15:50] Speaker 5: so it puts out powder to the ground. This is
[15:52] Speaker 5: not a track car, though, it's a GT car. As
[15:54] Speaker 5: you saw, this plenty ahead room, there's plenty of luggage
[15:57] Speaker 5: space in it, and it's extremely well put together, a
[16:00] Speaker 5: balanced car that I've been a design consultant home for
[16:03] Speaker 5: the past two years, and ironically I'm a Jag guy.
[16:06] Speaker 5: It must be like a British thing Brits abroad. I've
[16:08] Speaker 5: owned Jags, I've owned these types and I'd always wanted
[16:11] Speaker 5: to do a hot rod x JS. I even spoke
[16:14] Speaker 5: to me in Kalum about it when he was still
[16:16] Speaker 5: chief designer at Jag, probably in the five six years ago.
[16:20] Speaker 5: Even Jack Heritage like the concept of doing this project
[16:24] Speaker 5: because no one's really messed with the XJS listers raised them.
[16:28] Speaker 5: TWR Race them, and it's kind of a forgotten car
[16:31] Speaker 5: and a sea of resto mods. Obviously the portion nine
[16:34] Speaker 5: to eleven he is king of the hill.
[16:37] Speaker 2: You are branching out because well, at least a lot
[16:39] Speaker 2: of people know you as a Porsche guy, right urban outlaw,
[16:43] Speaker 2: and you know your warehouse, your shoes man, your shoes,
[16:49] Speaker 2: your car, so Jag it seems to me a little
[16:54] Speaker 2: bit of a diversion for you. But I guess you
[16:57] Speaker 2: actually have owned many cars. You've had Mopar cars, you
[17:02] Speaker 2: have a Rolls, you have a Corvette, so copying Hannah
[17:06] Speaker 2: to some extent, but you aren't just dedicated to nine
[17:10] Speaker 2: to elevens only.
[17:10] Speaker 3: No, I'd always been that way.
[17:12] Speaker 5: You know, I'm known as a Porsche guy, but even
[17:15] Speaker 5: twenty thirty years ago, I owned the Mopas, I had
[17:17] Speaker 5: two sixty nine super Bees out a seventy sixty five
[17:20] Speaker 5: Gt three fifty Mustang Replica. I had a seventy three
[17:24] Speaker 5: Lotus Shiopa at a seventy nine three or eight GTB Ferrari.
[17:28] Speaker 5: I like variety. So with this project, you know, when
[17:31] Speaker 5: they contacted me, not knowing that I actually wanted to
[17:34] Speaker 5: do this project, you know I was contacted ironically by
[17:37] Speaker 5: a former a Porsche PR marketing guy called Lee Newton
[17:41] Speaker 5: who was no longer with Porsche and he was consulting
[17:44] Speaker 5: with TWR. He shot me in an email out of
[17:46] Speaker 5: the blue asking would I be interested in working on
[17:49] Speaker 5: this project, not knowing that it was actually a dream
[17:51] Speaker 5: project and something I was interested in and obviously being
[17:55] Speaker 5: partnered up with TWR and a capacity as a design
[17:57] Speaker 5: consultant was an exciting pro. So I'd visited them in
[18:01] Speaker 5: England and worked sort of virtually for two years helping
[18:05] Speaker 5: them through the process. Hosted the event in LA at MySpace,
[18:09] Speaker 5: got the car over to Vegas at the Win Hotel
[18:12] Speaker 5: during F one where we displayed it, and then got
[18:15] Speaker 5: the car displayed at the LA Auto Show for the
[18:18] Speaker 5: final closing weekend after Thanksgiving. So I'd been a design
[18:22] Speaker 5: consultant and involved in the marketing production of actually launching
[18:26] Speaker 5: that car to the extent of it's going to be
[18:28] Speaker 5: here in New York for three weeks, then it goes
[18:31] Speaker 5: back to LA. We're gonna have Jay Leno drive it
[18:33] Speaker 5: and do some media stuff in LA, and.
[18:35] Speaker 3: Then it's on a tour. You know.
[18:36] Speaker 5: The goal is the making eighty eight of them, eighty
[18:39] Speaker 5: eighty is significant because that was nineteen eighty eight when
[18:41] Speaker 5: TWR one lamon outright with Jack. So it's a bespoke
[18:46] Speaker 5: customizable car, which eighty eight units are going to be produced.
[18:49] Speaker 2: So I my take on it, which doesn't matter. But
[18:54] Speaker 2: of course, yeah, of course I think it is so sexy, finish,
[19:00] Speaker 2: product is beautiful and it's it's really it really drives
[19:06] Speaker 2: me in some ways to want to get out there
[19:08] Speaker 2: and do a night drive. And you've done a night
[19:09] Speaker 2: drive video, which I also love, so I encourage people
[19:12] Speaker 2: to check out your night drive video. I think of
[19:14] Speaker 2: the similarities or lack thereof with Singer because you can
[19:19] Speaker 2: buy a donor XJS for pretty cheap, I mean compared
[19:23] Speaker 2: to a nine to six four right, like five.
[19:25] Speaker 5: To ten grand gets you behind the wheel of an
[19:28] Speaker 5: ex chess and ask me because I own one. I
[19:30] Speaker 5: bought one for seventy five hundred bucks and that experience
[19:33] Speaker 5: is okay. The TWL though, it's just on our next
[19:37] Speaker 5: level of performance.
[19:38] Speaker 3: As great as the car looks. First of all, when
[19:40] Speaker 3: you hear.
[19:41] Speaker 5: It, the exhaust note this raspeed throaty equal length head
[19:46] Speaker 5: of V twelve exhaust note that comes out of the
[19:49] Speaker 5: side right behind the B pillar right behind your ear
[19:52] Speaker 5: is intoxicating and unexpected. And what we've noticed in the
[19:56] Speaker 5: past three weeks of showcasing this car to the press
[19:59] Speaker 5: meter and potential customers is the message is the same.
[20:03] Speaker 5: They love the renderings, but they're so impressed with how
[20:06] Speaker 5: the actual physical car is. And that's the first actual
[20:10] Speaker 5: sort of.
[20:10] Speaker 3: Pre production car in England.
[20:12] Speaker 5: They've been running a shakedown development car, a test mule
[20:15] Speaker 5: with all the same underpinnings, but not skinned in that
[20:18] Speaker 5: or clanding that sexy wide bodied carbon fiby body that's
[20:22] Speaker 5: on it, and it's just the stance of the car,
[20:24] Speaker 5: the silhouette, the way it all blends together with form
[20:27] Speaker 5: and function. It's aggressive styling, but it stands out. When
[20:31] Speaker 5: we had that car in Vegas at the wind Row
[20:33] Speaker 5: in f one literally in the casino, next to thirty
[20:36] Speaker 5: million dollar McLaren f one's and various other cars, people
[20:40] Speaker 5: were drawn to it because there's nothing really like that
[20:43] Speaker 5: at that level of boxy group b Inser late seventies
[20:48] Speaker 5: early eighties looking car. It's just the stands. I mean,
[20:51] Speaker 5: it has a presence, but when you drive it, the
[20:54] Speaker 5: way it handles and puts the power down the fact
[20:57] Speaker 5: that it's manual and you operate it with three pedals,
[21:00] Speaker 5: you know, your two eyes, your brain, and your two
[21:02] Speaker 5: undred and two feet. It's intoxicating. It covers all the
[21:06] Speaker 5: senses viscerally. You know, it sounds good, feels good, smells good,
[21:10] Speaker 5: looks good. We took it on a drive around Manhattan,
[21:13] Speaker 5: capturing some images down in Times Square, down past Rockefeller Center,
[21:17] Speaker 5: and it's.
[21:18] Speaker 3: Just unbelievable how people look at that car.
[21:20] Speaker 5: And when you see it in New York traffic, surrounded
[21:22] Speaker 5: by all that chaos, that silhouette, it's just intoxicating. I mean,
[21:27] Speaker 5: I came back after the launch event, after the photo shoot,
[21:29] Speaker 5: just pumped.
[21:30] Speaker 3: I couldn't go to sleep. I was energized.
[21:32] Speaker 2: So the other thing, though, is you can get a
[21:36] Speaker 2: donor launcha and send it off to Italy and Camara
[21:40] Speaker 2: will make you a hot rotted version for like eight
[21:42] Speaker 2: hundred grand.
[21:44] Speaker 3: Yeah, there were thirty seven, which looks spectacular. Yeah.
[21:46] Speaker 2: Or you can get the nine six four for one
[21:49] Speaker 2: hundred grand and send it to Singer or I guess
[21:52] Speaker 2: maybe they source the donor for you, but they just
[21:54] Speaker 2: charge you like two million bucks this car. Do you
[21:57] Speaker 2: feel like it's underpriced because I think it's less than
[22:00] Speaker 2: three hundred, right.
[22:00] Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely underpriced for what it is. For sure,
[22:04] Speaker 5: they would have sold just as many at twice the price,
[22:07] Speaker 5: so you know it is underpriced. That's all I'm gonna
[22:11] Speaker 5: say on the price.
[22:11] Speaker 2: Are they Are there customizable options?
[22:14] Speaker 5: I mean, can you yea yeah? Yeah, I mean you
[22:16] Speaker 5: know there's not a million options. You know, it's not
[22:19] Speaker 5: like the salvel Row bespoke suit of what Singer is.
[22:22] Speaker 5: There are certain options that are customizable. First of all,
[22:25] Speaker 5: the body is all carbon fiber, so you can leave
[22:27] Speaker 5: elements that a car when you can paint it body
[22:29] Speaker 5: color paint to sample color, these options with leather interior.
[22:33] Speaker 5: At this point, we're not doing like a track spec.
[22:36] Speaker 5: It's a GT Touring spec. This predominantly is a GT
[22:40] Speaker 5: touring car. But it's good to do two hundred miles
[22:43] Speaker 5: an hour, so you know, you can customize it to
[22:46] Speaker 5: a certain degree. It's not over customizable, which reflects in
[22:49] Speaker 5: the price point of where it's at.
[22:51] Speaker 2: It's you say at this point, which makes me I
[22:54] Speaker 2: want to ask, what's next. You say you're gonna make
[22:56] Speaker 2: eighty eight. I think you've already made a couple dozen right.
[22:59] Speaker 5: Well, this is the first prototype. Currently today there's over
[23:03] Speaker 5: twenty of them allocated on order. This is gonna be
[23:06] Speaker 5: a process that takes about four years, going to deliver
[23:09] Speaker 5: about twenty cars.
[23:09] Speaker 2: I see, I see.
[23:10] Speaker 5: But down the pipeline, twall didn't just race Jags. They
[23:15] Speaker 5: race Reno's and Volvos and various other cars. So this
[23:18] Speaker 5: is the first development car of which many other will follow,
[23:22] Speaker 5: not necessarily all based on Jags.
[23:25] Speaker 2: So, but let me just ask for you. And by
[23:27] Speaker 2: the way, guests hate this on the show when they
[23:29] Speaker 2: come in for one piece of news and they say, okay,
[23:31] Speaker 2: but what's next?
[23:32] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[23:32] Speaker 2: Next for you? Like, what else are you thinking of?
[23:36] Speaker 2: You've done so much with Porsche's you're doing this right
[23:40] Speaker 2: now with the Jag and TWR. But you said that
[23:44] Speaker 2: you've talked to you know, you talked to Ian Callum
[23:46] Speaker 2: about this years ago. Yeah, I'm sure there are other
[23:48] Speaker 2: things in your head.
[23:49] Speaker 3: Sure, you know a great question.
[23:52] Speaker 2: What about in the automotive world do you find interesting
[23:55] Speaker 2: right now?
[23:55] Speaker 5: Well, I'm currently doing a project with Automobilia Pinaferina, which
[23:59] Speaker 5: is the ninety five year old world famous Italian design
[24:02] Speaker 5: house pretty much famous for designing the majority of the
[24:05] Speaker 5: classic Great Ferraris amongst other cars, and I've been collaborating
[24:09] Speaker 5: on there all electric Bautista, which some may find surprising,
[24:13] Speaker 5: that two thousand horsepower all electric Bautista that's built on
[24:16] Speaker 5: the Rimagneva platform, creating a one of one collaboration between
[24:22] Speaker 5: one while yeah, I do, I still have it there.
[24:25] Speaker 5: It's in the office in La It's still there. So
[24:27] Speaker 5: twenty twenty five that one of one car will be
[24:29] Speaker 5: unveiled to the world. So I'm super excited about that
[24:32] Speaker 5: because TWR has been a great project and Pinafarina is
[24:36] Speaker 5: sort of also a spectacular project with a company that's
[24:40] Speaker 5: perhaps the world's greatest design firm. So what's next for
[24:43] Speaker 5: me in the automotive world is just collaborating in a
[24:47] Speaker 5: way with other companies as a design consultant. I just
[24:50] Speaker 5: like doing cool stuff with cool people. It's not necessarily
[24:53] Speaker 5: has to be Porsche. I've designed and built a lot
[24:55] Speaker 5: of my own Porsches, you know, and there's other things
[24:58] Speaker 5: coming down the road with what I'm going to be
[24:59] Speaker 5: doing Porsches in the following year. So I like to
[25:03] Speaker 5: stay busy. I like to stay creative, inspirations all around.
[25:14] Speaker 2: I was walking home with my buddy after the event.
[25:17] Speaker 3: That's a long walk from uh.
[25:19] Speaker 2: We were walking, we were walking back to the gradge
[25:20] Speaker 2: all right, and he said that's good man. Magnus is
[25:22] Speaker 2: a servant and I was like, yeah, but you know what,
[25:25] Speaker 2: he just does stuff like when he has an idea,
[25:28] Speaker 2: he acts on it, he executes. And I think a
[25:30] Speaker 2: lot of people have a lot of ideas that just
[25:32] Speaker 2: sort of float in and out.
[25:33] Speaker 3: Right.
[25:34] Speaker 5: The key is starting the idea. Well, first of all,
[25:37] Speaker 5: the idea, I always say, is something that can't be taught.
[25:40] Speaker 5: You can't go to school and learn ideas. You can
[25:42] Speaker 5: go to school and learn how to execute them, but
[25:43] Speaker 5: the idea really comes organically from within. And you're either
[25:47] Speaker 5: inspired or you're not if you're a creative person. And
[25:49] Speaker 5: I find creativity comes in waves and rolls. Right now,
[25:53] Speaker 5: I'm on this surgence of creativity through the projects that
[25:57] Speaker 5: I'm inspired to do and the people I'm collaborating with,
[26:00] Speaker 5: and I think that just keeps the momentum rolling. You know,
[26:02] Speaker 5: I've already been approached by a few other people to
[26:05] Speaker 5: help collaborate or design or consult on various other things.
[26:08] Speaker 5: So I enjoy it. It's something new to me. My
[26:12] Speaker 5: background has always been design orientated from the clothing days,
[26:16] Speaker 5: and restoring buildings and property and cars are no different.
[26:19] Speaker 5: It's like restoring an old building. You know, We've got
[26:21] Speaker 5: one hundred year old house in Hollywood, Hannah and I
[26:24] Speaker 5: that we're restoring. I've got a one hundred and twenty
[26:26] Speaker 5: year old building I restored. So I like projects. You know,
[26:29] Speaker 5: I always say people like to collect, whether it's cars, guitars, watchers,
[26:32] Speaker 5: whatever it may be. You know, I'm collecting memorable moments,
[26:36] Speaker 5: and these are sort of formed by collaborating with interesting
[26:39] Speaker 5: people doing cool things.
[26:40] Speaker 2: But I think a lot of people are a lot
[26:42] Speaker 2: of people find starting a task daunting, and you just
[26:46] Speaker 2: seem to dive into something as soon as you am
[26:49] Speaker 2: I wrong about that, No.
[26:50] Speaker 3: No, it's spot on.
[26:51] Speaker 5: I mean I think a lot of people have a
[26:53] Speaker 5: fear of failure, so they don't want to start because
[26:56] Speaker 5: they're afraid of failing.
[26:57] Speaker 1: You know.
[26:57] Speaker 5: It's like it's a hot glass half empty or hole full.
[27:00] Speaker 5: I think for me coming to America thirty eight years ago,
[27:04] Speaker 5: I still have that same mentality of nothing to lose
[27:06] Speaker 5: in everything to gain. And I'm still inspired and I'm
[27:10] Speaker 5: still challenging myself to create, and it's not always there.
[27:14] Speaker 5: It's not like turning the light switch on. But when
[27:17] Speaker 5: something feels right, I'm one hundred percent in. I'm one
[27:20] Speaker 5: hundred and ten percent in. And if I don't feel
[27:22] Speaker 5: that way, I'm not involved in it. You know, I
[27:25] Speaker 5: like to give my old because you know, to me,
[27:27] Speaker 5: it's just something I'm inspired to do and I want
[27:30] Speaker 5: the best for the project, like with tw are you know,
[27:32] Speaker 5: for me, I just.
[27:33] Speaker 3: Love the car. I love driving it all, love the
[27:35] Speaker 3: way it looks.
[27:36] Speaker 5: It's been a great experience for me that I hope
[27:38] Speaker 5: continues and opens the door to other other ventures and
[27:42] Speaker 5: other collaborations.
[27:43] Speaker 2: Well, one of the things people often say about you
[27:46] Speaker 2: is that you seem to go where the puck is
[27:49] Speaker 2: gonna go. Like you, maybe I'm where I want wondering
[27:55] Speaker 2: how do you think about that? Because you start, you know,
[27:57] Speaker 2: I don't play hockey, I don't really think about the
[28:00] Speaker 2: it's not hot, and then it becomes the hottest neighborhood.
[28:02] Speaker 2: Or you buy a car that no one wants and
[28:03] Speaker 2: then everybody wants that car, So like, how do you
[28:06] Speaker 2: think that turns out?
[28:08] Speaker 3: Well?
[28:08] Speaker 5: For me, it's gut feeling you know, I'm not really
[28:10] Speaker 5: too concerned about what other people think. Like when we
[28:13] Speaker 5: acquired that building in downtown Ala in the Arts district
[28:16] Speaker 5: twenty five years ago, I've been in the Arts district
[28:18] Speaker 5: thirty two years.
[28:19] Speaker 3: I had a vision.
[28:20] Speaker 5: I knew this place was gonna evolve because I'd been
[28:22] Speaker 5: in places like Soho and I've been in London and
[28:25] Speaker 5: LA was just behind the curve, so I'd seen that trend.
[28:29] Speaker 5: But for me, it's more about just doing things that
[28:32] Speaker 5: I personally like to do, or cars that I personally
[28:34] Speaker 5: like to collect, Like I was acquiring short wheelbase nine
[28:37] Speaker 5: elevens when you could pick them up for nothing when
[28:39] Speaker 5: no one cared. Same thing with early three liter turbos.
[28:42] Speaker 5: So I like to experience variety in whatever market is.
[28:46] Speaker 5: I'm interested in, whether it's Watchers cars or guitars. So ultimately,
[28:50] Speaker 5: I've never bought anything as an investment. And one of
[28:53] Speaker 5: my pet peeve questions is when people say to me, Hey,
[28:56] Speaker 5: first time Porschona, what should I buy? What's gonna be
[28:59] Speaker 5: a good financially.
[29:00] Speaker 2: Which, by the way, a million people probably, And I'm like,
[29:02] Speaker 2: you're asking.
[29:02] Speaker 5: The wrong guy, because I'm going to tell you invest
[29:04] Speaker 5: in memorable moments and smiles per mile, you know. And
[29:07] Speaker 5: they go, well, you bought cars for ten ground that
[29:09] Speaker 5: are now worth two hundred. How did that happen? I go, well,
[29:11] Speaker 5: I bought what I personally liked. I wasn't chasing a trend.
[29:15] Speaker 5: I'm not trying to hit that puck where I think
[29:18] Speaker 5: it's gonna go. I'm not thinking that way. I'm thinking
[29:21] Speaker 5: what inspires me. It's all about what inspires me, what
[29:23] Speaker 5: motivates me, whatever I want to experience. And then later
[29:26] Speaker 5: on it seems to be it's like I'm setting the trend.
[29:29] Speaker 5: It goes back to the serious clothing days when I
[29:32] Speaker 5: designed certain things that I personally liked to wear that
[29:35] Speaker 5: then became trendy. You're either creating the trend or you're
[29:39] Speaker 5: following the trend, and trends come and go. So you know,
[29:43] Speaker 5: you know, you don't ever really want to be trendy.
[29:45] Speaker 5: You always want to be one step ahead of that.
[29:47] Speaker 5: But have your own style, you know. So I'm all
[29:49] Speaker 5: about expressing my own style, whether it's through buildings, art,
[29:53] Speaker 5: the way I look my hat, whatever it may be, right,
[29:56] Speaker 5: I'm adding my own personality to whatever it is I'm doing.
[29:59] Speaker 5: And that's that's a common thread to my story. The
[30:02] Speaker 5: three things that I've done with some success the clothing company,
[30:05] Speaker 5: property development, and playing around with cars. I had no
[30:09] Speaker 5: education in those fields. I didn't got a school to
[30:11] Speaker 5: learn design or anything. Inspirations all around, whether it's colors
[30:14] Speaker 5: or textures or shapes, right, and it's how you interpret them.
[30:18] Speaker 5: Throw them in the blend of things you're interested in,
[30:20] Speaker 5: mix it up, and what comes out is your style.
[30:23] Speaker 5: Like the way I did my Porsches, I never looked
[30:25] Speaker 5: to a sort of copy what the factory had done. Martini, Livery,
[30:29] Speaker 5: Golf Livery. I'd take elements from American hot rods and
[30:33] Speaker 5: TV shows that I grew up inspired by, which all
[30:36] Speaker 5: revolved around cars, whether it was Starsky and Art or
[30:39] Speaker 5: Dukes of Hazard or Rockford Files or Kojak or Chips Right.
[30:43] Speaker 5: So it's a little bit of Americana, a lot of
[30:45] Speaker 5: British motor sports because that was my background growing up
[30:49] Speaker 5: watching motorsports in the seventies and eighties, sort of the
[30:51] Speaker 5: glory era for me, and then this sort of British
[30:55] Speaker 5: bulldog spirit of anything's possible, no one's going to stop
[30:57] Speaker 5: me doing what I'm going to do. Gets throw in
[31:00] Speaker 5: the blender on what comes out is my style. And
[31:02] Speaker 5: I've been able to create these styles, whether it was
[31:05] Speaker 5: serious clothing or the Porsches that I've designed all the property.
[31:08] Speaker 5: I've sort of developed into sort of this signature touch
[31:11] Speaker 5: in a way of just being unique by not trying
[31:14] Speaker 5: to emulate someone else, because that's kind of boring.
[31:16] Speaker 2: You also don't look for, at least as far as
[31:19] Speaker 2: I know, like the low mile showroom condition examples, right,
[31:25] Speaker 2: which I think is really cool. Didn't you buy a
[31:27] Speaker 2: Turbo that was had one hundred eight thousand miles on
[31:29] Speaker 2: the clock.
[31:30] Speaker 5: I bought a twenty fourteen nine nine to one Turbos
[31:33] Speaker 5: one owner car probably three years ago with one hundred
[31:35] Speaker 5: and fifty nine thousand miles in it. It's now got
[31:38] Speaker 5: almost one hundred and ninety thousand miles in it. Most
[31:40] Speaker 5: people are not interested in a high mileage Porsche, you know,
[31:44] Speaker 5: like a Turbos The average mileage is probably thirty fifty
[31:48] Speaker 5: might be high, but that's where the value is, you know.
[31:51] Speaker 5: So for me, I'm about back to smiles per mile.
[31:53] Speaker 5: These cars were built to be driven. When people want
[31:56] Speaker 5: to show me a collection with zero miles on it,
[31:58] Speaker 5: I have zero interesting that because.
[32:00] Speaker 3: Where's the story? You know?
[32:03] Speaker 5: I heard you talking to mkhel about IRV Gordon and
[32:06] Speaker 5: he's three million mile Volvo P eighteen hundred. I drove
[32:10] Speaker 5: that car. Apparently I was the first guy outside of
[32:14] Speaker 5: Earth's family in his mechanic to drive that car. And
[32:19] Speaker 5: I met Ev when he was still alive, sadly had
[32:21] Speaker 5: passed away. IRV. Gordon is a New York school teacher
[32:24] Speaker 5: who put three million miles in a nineteen sixty seven
[32:26] Speaker 5: Volvo P. Eighteen hundred, which is documented in the Guinness
[32:29] Speaker 5: Boocker World Records is the highest mileage individually owned private
[32:34] Speaker 5: non commercial car, with three million miles in it, being
[32:37] Speaker 5: repainted a couple of times, engine rebuilt three or four times.
[32:41] Speaker 5: Volvo started keeping track of high mileage cars through the
[32:44] Speaker 5: dealers in the seventies. By the late seventies he had
[32:46] Speaker 5: a million miles on that So when I drove that car,
[32:49] Speaker 5: and I had met her, And ironically I met him
[32:51] Speaker 5: when he was shooting a Volvo commercial in La in
[32:54] Speaker 5: that car and he had a mechanical breakdown on my
[32:57] Speaker 5: street in front of my bill. Wow, that was how
[32:59] Speaker 5: I met him. So when I got the chance to
[33:01] Speaker 5: you know do this show. Ironically, I drove the car.
[33:04] Speaker 5: It was kind of an emotional thing because I was
[33:06] Speaker 5: with his mechanic, Nino, this Italian guy lives in Jersey
[33:10] Speaker 5: and it worked on the car with erv So it's like,
[33:12] Speaker 5: that was the world's greatest story. You get guys like
[33:15] Speaker 5: Jay Leno collect cars and the great storytellers and great custodians,
[33:20] Speaker 5: and people love a story. So a car with zero
[33:23] Speaker 5: miles on it, what is the story? Yeah, it's a short,
[33:25] Speaker 5: boring one, right, that's the story. I'm not interested in that.
[33:29] Speaker 5: How did I have gone put three million miles in
[33:31] Speaker 5: the car? He drove everywhere with it, so it's like,
[33:33] Speaker 5: why did he do that? Why did he drive? Driving's
[33:36] Speaker 5: like meditation for some people, right for me, especially, you
[33:39] Speaker 5: get on a road where the cell phone doesn't work.
[33:41] Speaker 5: Your car's so loud you can't have a conversation. I
[33:44] Speaker 5: turned my phone off and the next two hours I'm
[33:46] Speaker 5: completely disconnected. On this path, this journey. You got whatever
[33:50] Speaker 5: speed you want to go. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's
[33:53] Speaker 5: not clear your head nothing else matters. You're not really
[33:56] Speaker 5: thinking about anything else other than focusing on the drive.
[33:59] Speaker 5: So that's the greatest thing. About driving and why cars
[34:02] Speaker 5: should be driven, the built to be driven, right, you know,
[34:05] Speaker 5: Commuting is one thing that's where self driving autonomous electric
[34:09] Speaker 5: cars makes sense, especially you know, driving here in New
[34:12] Speaker 5: York City from here to Classic Cack c Librit, it's
[34:14] Speaker 5: two miles. You can walk quick and then you can
[34:17] Speaker 5: drive it. So there's some places where I'm not opposed
[34:20] Speaker 5: to electric cause autonomous driving. That's commuting. Commuting and driving
[34:25] Speaker 5: are too completely different.
[34:26] Speaker 2: No, I agree one hundred percent. Without going off on
[34:28] Speaker 2: too much of a tangent. We only have a couple
[34:31] Speaker 2: of minutes left. So one final question about what you
[34:33] Speaker 2: have next, because I've watched everything you put on YouTube,
[34:37] Speaker 2: and I love the opp series and.
[34:39] Speaker 3: You got too much time on you.
[34:40] Speaker 2: I recently saw you do like a walk and talk
[34:44] Speaker 2: a single camera shot in like a Porsche graveyard. That's
[34:47] Speaker 2: just unbelievable, dude. I couldn't believe that you made it
[34:52] Speaker 2: the whole way because it's like three or four minutes long.
[34:55] Speaker 2: What's next for you in terms of media content that
[34:57] Speaker 2: I can consume, Oh, just during.
[34:59] Speaker 5: More cool stuff. You know, I'm actually drawing a blankers
[35:03] Speaker 5: to what's next. I mean, there's there's quite a lot
[35:05] Speaker 5: of things coming up. But what is twenty twenty five
[35:07] Speaker 5: will be.
[35:07] Speaker 2: Into what was that graveyard? What was that?
[35:10] Speaker 5: Well, it's another great story. Rudy Kleine opened. He didn't
[35:14] Speaker 5: call it the junk yard. It was called Porsche Foreign
[35:16] Speaker 5: Auto Supply and it was a wrecking yard that was
[35:19] Speaker 5: formed in the late sixties, and Rudy Klein would buy
[35:22] Speaker 5: these crashed salvage, mostly Porsches and Mercedes, but along and
[35:26] Speaker 5: he had at one time over a thousand cars that
[35:28] Speaker 5: he was dismantling and pardon now in the seventies and eighties.
[35:32] Speaker 5: But he also collected exotic things, like he had the
[35:34] Speaker 5: only one black alloy bodied goalwing. Only twenty nine were made,
[35:38] Speaker 5: but only one was black. That ammened down for like
[35:41] Speaker 5: eleven point five million dollars. So he collected crashed wrecked
[35:44] Speaker 5: salvage pennies on the dollar, Porsche, Mercedes, Bentley Ferraris. He
[35:49] Speaker 5: passed away in two thousand and two and then the
[35:51] Speaker 5: brothers took over, and long story short, the whole junk
[35:53] Speaker 5: yard was auction and I think sold for over thirty
[35:56] Speaker 5: million dollars.
[35:57] Speaker 3: It was a scrap yard. But what made that story
[35:59] Speaker 3: so great was Rudy Klein. How did he get all
[36:02] Speaker 3: these cause what was the story? You know?
[36:04] Speaker 5: He's just not found And the take you're referring to
[36:07] Speaker 5: is me just rambling on about here I am, and this.
[36:09] Speaker 3: Is what it is.
[36:10] Speaker 5: But it comes back to if you're excited and passionate
[36:13] Speaker 5: about something, you know. My favorite saying is, you know,
[36:16] Speaker 5: a spreadsheet will only get you so far. Passion gets
[36:20] Speaker 5: you where you want to go. And I was passionate
[36:22] Speaker 5: about sharing the story because ironically I'd gone to the
[36:25] Speaker 5: Junkyard many many years ago and not memoried stayed with
[36:28] Speaker 5: me like me and know of Gordon and a three
[36:30] Speaker 5: million mile evolvo. So when he's passionate about something you know,
[36:33] Speaker 5: it just evolves and comes out of you. What's next
[36:35] Speaker 5: for me? Only time will tell.
[36:37] Speaker 2: Well, I am grateful that you shared that story and
[36:39] Speaker 2: so many others with us, Magnus, Thanks so much for
[36:42] Speaker 2: joining us on Hot Pursuit.
[36:43] Speaker 3: Great to be here, Thanks Choos.
[36:45] Speaker 2: I find him to be an inspiring man, Hannah, and
[36:50] Speaker 2: I think you have a pretty high opinion of him yourself.
[36:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's great. He's great, and I have to say
[36:56] Speaker 1: he really enjoys you, and I think you are great
[37:03] Speaker 1: at bringing out different sides of him, because sometimes, you know,
[37:07] Speaker 1: you tend to get the same questions if you're in
[37:10] Speaker 1: certain circles. Yeah, and actually this is a this is
[37:12] Speaker 1: a slightly different circle. And so it's it's it's nice,
[37:16] Speaker 1: like I like how you you bring out different parts.
[37:19] Speaker 2: It's very cool to talk to him. And you know,
[37:21] Speaker 2: he's achieved so much, I think in part and he
[37:25] Speaker 2: would say this, We talked about this because he just
[37:28] Speaker 2: does it. You know, so many people like I'm a procrastinator.
[37:31] Speaker 2: I have all these ideas in my head and I
[37:33] Speaker 2: have all these projects that I want to start someday
[37:36] Speaker 2: and I never get around to it. I never even remember.
[37:40] Speaker 1: And but doing pretty you're doing.
[37:42] Speaker 2: But he like just he's like, oh, I want to
[37:44] Speaker 2: make a pink sweater. I don't know, and then he
[37:47] Speaker 2: just does it. He'll just wake up in the morning
[37:49] Speaker 2: and do it. So that's, uh, that's a really cool
[37:53] Speaker 2: characteristic that I wish I had. But my wife's like that.
[37:57] Speaker 2: So what my new thing is when I have a
[38:00] Speaker 2: project or an idea, I tell her and then she executes.
[38:04] Speaker 1: I can't wait to meet her someday because I've never
[38:07] Speaker 1: actually met her yet, but she seems.
[38:09] Speaker 2: Like a real good you should go to the GP
[38:11] Speaker 2: with us in Austin.
[38:12] Speaker 1: She's going to Yeah.
[38:14] Speaker 2: She's a bigger Moto GP fan than I am.
[38:15] Speaker 1: So oh I love that.
[38:18] Speaker 2: Well. I was going to say, what do you have
[38:19] Speaker 2: planned for next week? But even if you have bigger plans?
[38:22] Speaker 2: What what? What are you looking forward to? What's coming up?
[38:26] Speaker 1: You know? You know, I am looking forward to being
[38:29] Speaker 1: back in New York in February. I'm coming back for
[38:32] Speaker 1: an edit meeting with the Pursuit's team of course, so
[38:34] Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to coming back and maybe we can
[38:37] Speaker 1: record some more podcast together. I am looking forward to
[38:42] Speaker 1: I'm getting a Aston Martin Vanquish press card wow for
[38:48] Speaker 1: the first the first half of January, so that's something
[38:52] Speaker 1: we can really discuss.
[38:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, that was fast out. Yeah yeah, I think it's beautiful.
[38:59] Speaker 2: I mean not that it's many Asid Martins aren't, but
[39:01] Speaker 2: I think it's absolutely stunning.
[39:04] Speaker 1: I know, I'm really really looking forward to driving it
[39:07] Speaker 1: and seeing what it's like, because like, they're just gorgeous cars.
[39:11] Speaker 1: So I'm looking forward to that. That'll be my first
[39:13] Speaker 1: press car. I think of the year, twelve cylinders to
[39:15] Speaker 1: kick it right, it's good. I think it's very auspicious,
[39:20] Speaker 1: and honestly, I'm really fascinated by China right now. I'm
[39:23] Speaker 1: looking forward, just like in a general sense, to seeing
[39:27] Speaker 1: how China affects the car industry. And I know we've
[39:31] Speaker 1: touched on this a little bit, but I just it's
[39:34] Speaker 1: fascinating as we watch what's happening over there affect what
[39:40] Speaker 1: our own domestic automakers are doing and what Europe is doing,
[39:43] Speaker 1: and nobody really knows what's going to happen, but it
[39:48] Speaker 1: will definitely be interesting. So I'm looking forward to watching
[39:51] Speaker 1: that unfold.
[39:51] Speaker 2: I think it is super fascinating. And you know, in
[39:55] Speaker 2: my day job where I comment on financial markets or
[39:58] Speaker 2: report on financial market and ask questions, there was a
[40:02] Speaker 2: great story about cost Nott, who's an ECB board member,
[40:06] Speaker 2: and he was making the point that if we get
[40:09] Speaker 2: tariffs put on European goods and then of course they retaliate,
[40:14] Speaker 2: it starts a trade war. Europe is much more likely
[40:18] Speaker 2: to turn to China, or to turn more to China
[40:20] Speaker 2: than they already have. I just spent the last couple
[40:22] Speaker 2: of weeks in Spain. There are a lot of Chinese cars,
[40:26] Speaker 2: they are already and there are clearly more coming. And
[40:29] Speaker 2: they're very good at making this like a pretty high
[40:32] Speaker 2: level disposable ev So I mean, you know, you don't
[40:36] Speaker 2: even need to lease it. You just buy it and
[40:37] Speaker 2: two years later you can be done with it. Not
[40:40] Speaker 2: that it, you know, falls apart, but it's just cheap.
[40:43] Speaker 2: It's just that cheap. So Colossknot was talking about Europe
[40:48] Speaker 2: basically importing deflation from China because if the EU and
[40:53] Speaker 2: the US go at it and the trade spat, you know,
[40:55] Speaker 2: and start slapping twenty forty sixty percent tariffs on each
[40:59] Speaker 2: other's products, and obviously automotive is first and foremost right.
[41:02] Speaker 2: They put tariffs on Harley Davidson last time in retaliation. Yes,
[41:07] Speaker 2: they're going to be buying many more byds.
[41:10] Speaker 1: Completely And it's so you know, BYD actually has a
[41:14] Speaker 1: bus factory in California. They don't make passenger cars here,
[41:18] Speaker 1: but somehow there's a loophole where they're manufacturing buses. They've
[41:22] Speaker 1: got factories in Mexico and Canada. And yet, you know,
[41:28] Speaker 1: it seems like most analysts think there's no way that
[41:31] Speaker 1: Chinese vehicles will be allowed to be sold in the US.
[41:35] Speaker 2: I don't know, they already are you already have. Uh,
[41:39] Speaker 2: you know Volvo and pole Star, have you know? Of
[41:44] Speaker 2: course they are still putting cars together in Gothenburg and Sweden,
[41:47] Speaker 2: but they have manufactured in China vehicles as well. By
[41:51] Speaker 2: the way, speaking of bus, have you gotten hold of
[41:54] Speaker 2: the Folkswagen the ID Buzz no Electric?
[41:57] Speaker 1: No I have. I have not seen it. I mean
[41:59] Speaker 1: I saw a early prototype like seven years ago in
[42:04] Speaker 1: Pebble Beach that they were letting press drive like on
[42:07] Speaker 1: the beach. And that was a prototype and that was
[42:09] Speaker 1: the first and last time I ever saw one in
[42:11] Speaker 1: real life.
[42:12] Speaker 2: That would be a cool because I keep thinking about
[42:16] Speaker 2: what you're driving to. Obviously, the Kayen GTS is a
[42:19] Speaker 2: very good choice from Elie to Denver. Yes, but the
[42:22] Speaker 2: id Buzz would be an interesting choice totally. Of course.
[42:25] Speaker 2: The first concern is charging, right, But I go back
[42:28] Speaker 2: to Alex Roy's canniball run in the Tesla. He took
[42:32] Speaker 2: off we were with him from New York City, uh,
[42:36] Speaker 2: and then drove across the country. I read that he
[42:38] Speaker 2: spent less than six hours charging. That's wild, that's crazy, right?
[42:43] Speaker 1: Was that on his LinkedIn account?
[42:45] Speaker 3: Yes?
[42:45] Speaker 1: Posted, Yes, I got a deep dive into that because
[42:48] Speaker 1: I kind of scanned it and then post it.
[42:49] Speaker 2: But it's a lot of details because he knows so
[42:51] Speaker 2: much about like, he's so technical, he's so into it. Right, yeah,
[42:55] Speaker 2: but wow, six hours, yeah, less than six hours charging
[42:59] Speaker 2: on a cross country trip in an electric vehicle. Now
[43:02] Speaker 2: he has the benefit obviously the supercharger network, and yeah,
[43:06] Speaker 2: but it would be interesting to see if that's all.
[43:09] Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like I would spend more than
[43:10] Speaker 2: six hours at gas stations, right yeah.
[43:14] Speaker 1: Plus just like getting out and stretching, you know, pee breaks,
[43:18] Speaker 1: get grabbing a hamburger, you know, got to stop by
[43:21] Speaker 1: Applebee's or.
[43:22] Speaker 2: Something, letting the dog out.
[43:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, completely, Yeah, so we.
[43:25] Speaker 2: Should get ahold of an id buzz to figure that out.
[43:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great idea. And also we should have
[43:29] Speaker 1: Alex come back on like yeah some point.
[43:31] Speaker 2: Well maybe when you're here in February.
[43:33] Speaker 1: That'd be perfect.
[43:34] Speaker 2: We get him back in the studio. Cool. All right,
[43:37] Speaker 2: that's all we have time for today, but we'll see
[43:39] Speaker 2: you back here, same time, same place next week. Happy
[43:41] Speaker 2: New Year, Happy New year.
[43:43] Speaker 1: Right to us, thank you for listening to us. We
[43:46] Speaker 1: really appreciate you and love you, and we love hearing
[43:51] Speaker 1: from you. And this is so fun for us and Matt,
[43:54] Speaker 1: as you know, it's such a joy. So thank you. Yes,
[43:58] Speaker 1: it's been great.
[43:59] Speaker 2: Thank you very much much, Thank you, Hannah, and thank
[44:01] Speaker 2: you dear listener. I'm Matt Miller and
[44:04] Speaker 1: I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is Bloomberg.
