[0:17] Speaker 1: by Lyndamree Nielsen, Vancouver, b C. English Fairy Tales by
[0:23] Speaker 1: Flora Annie Steele The Story of the Three Bears. Once
[0:29] Speaker 1: upon a time, there were three bears who lived together
[0:34] Speaker 1: in a house of their own in a wood. One
[0:37] Speaker 1: of them was a little we bear, and one was
[0:41] Speaker 1: a middle sized bear, and the other was a great
[0:45] Speaker 1: big bear. They had each a bull for their porridge,
[0:50] Speaker 1: a little bull for the little we bear, and a
[0:53] Speaker 1: middle sized bull for the middle sized bear, and a
[0:57] Speaker 1: great bull for the great big bear. And they had
[1:01] Speaker 1: each a chair to sit in, a little chair for
[1:04] Speaker 1: the little wee bear and a middle sized chair for
[1:08] Speaker 1: the middle sized bear, and a great chair for the
[1:12] Speaker 1: great big bear. And they had each a bed to
[1:15] Speaker 1: sleep in, a little bed for the little wee bear,
[1:19] Speaker 1: and a middle sized bed for the middle sized bear,
[1:23] Speaker 1: and a great bed for the great big bear. One day,
[1:28] Speaker 1: after they had made the porridge for their breakfast and
[1:32] Speaker 1: poured it into their porridge bowls, they walked out into
[1:37] Speaker 1: the wood while the porridge was cooling, that they might
[1:41] Speaker 1: not burn their mouths by beginning too soon, for they
[1:45] Speaker 1: were polite, well brought up bears. And while they were away,
[1:51] Speaker 1: a little girl called Goldilocks, who lived at the other
[1:55] Speaker 1: side of the wood and had been sent on an
[1:58] Speaker 1: errand by her mother, passed by the house and looked
[2:02] Speaker 1: in at the window, and then she peeped in at
[2:06] Speaker 1: the key hole, for she was not at all a
[2:09] Speaker 1: well brought up little girl. Then, seeing nobody in the house,
[2:14] Speaker 1: she lifted the latch. The door was not fastened, because
[2:19] Speaker 1: the bears would good bears, who did nobody any harm,
[2:23] Speaker 1: and never suspected that anybody would harm them. So Goldilocks
[2:28] Speaker 1: opened the door and went in, and well pleased was
[2:32] Speaker 1: she when she saw the porridge on the table. If
[2:36] Speaker 1: she had been a well brought up little girl, she
[2:40] Speaker 1: would have waited till the bears came home, and then
[2:44] Speaker 1: perhaps they would have asked her to breakfast, For they
[2:48] Speaker 1: were good bears, a little rough, or so, as the
[2:52] Speaker 1: manner of bears is, but for all that, very good
[2:57] Speaker 1: natured and hospitable. But she was an impudent, rude little girl,
[3:03] Speaker 1: and so she set about helping herself. First she tasted
[3:08] Speaker 1: the porridge of the great big bear, and that was
[3:12] Speaker 1: too hot for her. Next she tasted the porridge of
[3:15] Speaker 1: the middle size bear, but that was too cold for her.
[3:20] Speaker 1: And then she went to the porridge of the little
[3:22] Speaker 1: wee bear and tasted it, and that was neither too
[3:28] Speaker 1: hot nor too cold, but just right. And she liked
[3:31] Speaker 1: it so well that she ate it all up every bit.
[3:37] Speaker 1: Then Goldilocks, who was tired for she had been catching
[3:41] Speaker 1: butterflies instead of running on her errand sat down in
[3:46] Speaker 1: the chair of the great big bear. But that was
[3:50] Speaker 1: too hard for her. And then she sat down in
[3:54] Speaker 1: the chair of the middle sized bear, and that was
[3:57] Speaker 1: too soft for her. But when she sat down in
[4:01] Speaker 1: the chair of the little wee bear, that was neither
[4:04] Speaker 1: too hard nor too soft, but just right. So she
[4:09] Speaker 1: seated herself in it, and there she sat till the
[4:13] Speaker 1: bottom of the chair came out, and down she came,
[4:17] Speaker 1: plump upon the ground, and that made her very cross,
[4:22] Speaker 1: for she was a bad tempered little girl. Now, being
[4:27] Speaker 1: determined to rest, Goldilocks went upstairs into the bed chamber
[4:32] Speaker 1: in which the three bears slept, and first she lay
[4:37] Speaker 1: down upon the bed of the great big bear, but
[4:41] Speaker 1: that was too high at the head for her. And
[4:45] Speaker 1: next she lay down upon the bed of the middle
[4:48] Speaker 1: sized bear, and that was too high at the foot
[4:52] Speaker 1: for her. And then she lay down upon the bed
[4:56] Speaker 1: of the little wee bear, and that was neither too
[5:00] Speaker 1: high at the head nor at the foot, but just right.
[5:05] Speaker 1: So she covered herself up comfortably and lay there till
[5:10] Speaker 1: she fell fast asleep. By this time the three bears
[5:15] Speaker 1: thought their porridge would be cool enough for them to
[5:18] Speaker 1: eat it properly, so they came home to breakfast. Now
[5:23] Speaker 1: careless goldilocks had left the spoon of the great big
[5:27] Speaker 1: bear standing in his porridge. Somebody has been at my porridge,
[5:34] Speaker 1: said the great big bear in his great, rough gruff voice.
[5:41] Speaker 1: Then the middle size bear looked at his porridge and
[5:45] Speaker 1: saw the spoon was standing in it too. Somebody has
[5:50] Speaker 1: been at my porridge, said the middle sized bear in
[5:54] Speaker 1: his middle sized voice. Then the little wee bear looked
[5:59] Speaker 1: at his, and there was the spoon in the porridge bowl,
[6:04] Speaker 1: but the porridge was all gone. Somebody has been at
[6:09] Speaker 1: my porridge and has eaten it all up, said the
[6:14] Speaker 1: little wee bear in his little wee voice. Upon this,
[6:18] Speaker 1: the three bears, seeing that some one had entered their
[6:23] Speaker 1: house and eaten up the little wee bear's breakfast, began
[6:28] Speaker 1: to look about them. Now, the careless Goldilocks had not
[6:33] Speaker 1: put the hard cushion straight when she rose from the
[6:37] Speaker 1: chair of the Great big Bear. Somebody has been sitting
[6:42] Speaker 1: in my chair, said the Great big Bear in his great, rough,
[6:47] Speaker 1: gruff voice, and the careless Goldilocks had squatted down the
[6:53] Speaker 1: soft cushion of the middle sized bear. Somebody has been
[6:57] Speaker 1: sitting in my chair, said the middle size bear in
[7:01] Speaker 1: his middle sized voice. Somebody has been sitting in my
[7:07] Speaker 1: chair and has sat the bottom through, said the little
[7:12] Speaker 1: wee bear in his little wee voice. Then the three
[7:15] Speaker 1: bears thought they had better make further search in case
[7:20] Speaker 1: it was a burglar, so they went upstairs into their
[7:24] Speaker 1: bed chamber. Now Goldilocks had pulled the pillow of the
[7:28] Speaker 1: Great Bear out of its place. Somebody has been lying
[7:33] Speaker 1: in my bed, said the Great big Bear in his great, rough,
[7:39] Speaker 1: gruff voice, and Goldilocks had pulled the bolster of the
[7:44] Speaker 1: middle sized bear out of its place. Somebody has been
[7:49] Speaker 1: lying in my bed, said the middle sized bear in
[7:53] Speaker 1: his middle sized voice. But when the little wee bear
[7:57] Speaker 1: came to look at his bed, there was the bolster
[8:01] Speaker 1: in its place, and the pillow was in its place
[8:05] Speaker 1: upon the bolster, and upon the pillow there was Goldilock's
[8:10] Speaker 1: yellow head, which was not in its place, for she
[8:15] Speaker 1: had no business there. Somebody has been lying in my bed,
[8:20] Speaker 1: and here she is still, said the little wee bear
[8:26] Speaker 1: in his little wee voice. Now Goldilocks had heard in
[8:30] Speaker 1: her sleep the great, rough, gruff voice of the great
[8:35] Speaker 1: big bear, but she was so fast asleep that it
[8:39] Speaker 1: was no more to her than the roaring of wind
[8:43] Speaker 1: or the rumbling of thunder. And she had heard the
[8:48] Speaker 1: middle sized voice of the middle sized bear, but it
[8:52] Speaker 1: was only as if she had heard some one speaking
[8:55] Speaker 1: in a dream. But when she heard the little wee
[8:59] Speaker 1: voice of the little wee bear, it was so sharp
[9:02] Speaker 1: and so shrill that it wakened her at once. Up
[9:07] Speaker 1: she started, and when she saw the three bears on
[9:10] Speaker 1: one side of the bed, she tumbled herself out at
[9:14] Speaker 1: the other and ran to the window. Now the window
[9:18] Speaker 1: was open, because the bears, like good tidy bears as
[9:24] Speaker 1: they were, always opened their bed chamber window when they
[9:28] Speaker 1: got up in the morning. So naughty, frightened little Goldilocks jumped,
[9:34] Speaker 1: And whether she broke her neck in the fall or
[9:37] Speaker 1: ran into the wood and was lost there, or found
[9:41] Speaker 1: her way out of the wood and got whipped for
[9:43] Speaker 1: being a bad girl and playing truant, no one can say.
[9:48] Speaker 1: But the Three Bears never saw anything more of her
[9:54] Speaker 1: end of Chapter two recording by Lynda Marie Nielsen than
[9:59] Speaker 1: coup for BC.
