[0:10] Speaker 1: is for the week of October the sixth to October
[0:14] Speaker 1: the thirteenth today. Mathematically, do that correctly, Harry Jacobs over
[0:18] Speaker 1: at the Music History Desk, the Master of Music, the
[0:21] Speaker 1: Master of Mayhem.
[0:23] Speaker 2: Monday to sixth through Sunday to twelfth. All right, we go, Okay,
[0:26] Speaker 2: our calendar is Monday through Sunday. Bus all right, so
[0:29] Speaker 2: you you I sit corrected, correct, correct.
[0:33] Speaker 3: Let's get into it.
[0:33] Speaker 2: There's a lot to get to and I'm going to
[0:35] Speaker 2: kind of fly through some stuff and we could decide
[0:37] Speaker 2: what you want to talk about and what you want
[0:40] Speaker 2: to let go by first one nineteen sixty seven, October sixth,
[0:44] Speaker 2: Purple Hayes released in the US arguably one.
[0:48] Speaker 3: Of the best Hendrick songs. Oh yeah.
[0:50] Speaker 2: Bizarre sounding from a musical standpoint, very different but iconic,
[0:57] Speaker 2: but I oh yeah. Barn Burner seventy eight in Excess
[1:01] Speaker 2: played their first live show in Sydney.
[1:03] Speaker 3: They realized they went back to seventy eight. But I
[1:05] Speaker 3: guess thinking about you.
[1:06] Speaker 2: Know, they were you know, they were around in eighty
[1:10] Speaker 2: you know, kind of the tail end of New Waves,
[1:12] Speaker 2: so it you know, that makes sense. But in seventy
[1:16] Speaker 2: eight they played their first show in Sydney, and I'm a.
[1:19] Speaker 3: Fan of the Asses myself. Yeah, yeah, I am. I
[1:23] Speaker 3: am too.
[1:23] Speaker 2: And you know what else I liked from that region.
[1:26] Speaker 2: It was Jimmy Barnes who played with Inxcess.
[1:30] Speaker 3: I forgot about him.
[1:32] Speaker 2: Yeah, good times Jimmy Barnes and in excess, what a
[1:34] Speaker 2: barn burner that song is. Right nineteen eighty, Bob Marley
[1:40] Speaker 2: collapsed on stage in Pittsburgh and that would be his
[1:43] Speaker 2: final performance.
[1:44] Speaker 3: Oh man, I.
[1:47] Speaker 2: Don't believe that he knew he was sick when he
[1:51] Speaker 2: went on that tour. Oh wow, I believe he lived
[1:54] Speaker 2: without knowing he had cancer.
[1:56] Speaker 3: Wow, that's incredible.
[2:00] Speaker 2: October seventh, nineteen sixty seven, Cass Elliott, Mama's and Papas
[2:04] Speaker 2: gave birth to her daughter, Owen Vanessa. It's a name
[2:08] Speaker 2: that doesn't ring up bell with me. And everybody loved Cass.
[2:11] Speaker 1: I think we talked of that on a previous episode.
[2:14] Speaker 1: She was she was beloved. Did you know she was
[2:17] Speaker 1: on a little bit of a career track that one
[2:21] Speaker 1: of the things she could have been doing would have
[2:23] Speaker 1: been hosting kind of like some sort of variety show,
[2:27] Speaker 1: like sit down talk show, that.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Type of thing. Do you know there was there was
[2:30] Speaker 3: talk about that, Oh she's a she was a little
[2:34] Speaker 3: bit of a gabby girl that she loved to just
[2:36] Speaker 3: chit chat. Yep. Very interesting.
[2:39] Speaker 2: Her her birth name was Ellen Naomi Cohen, but she
[2:43] Speaker 2: took cass Elliott on. She lost her life in nineteen
[2:48] Speaker 2: seventy four.
[2:51] Speaker 1: I think there would have been I think there would
[2:53] Speaker 1: have been a lot of a lot of a lot
[2:54] Speaker 1: of stuff music out of her if she if she
[2:58] Speaker 1: survived and lived on, so agreed.
[3:01] Speaker 2: Nineteen seventy five, October seventh, John Lennon won his green
[3:06] Speaker 2: card battle against the United States government. Wow, there was
[3:10] Speaker 2: a movement of foot to keep him out yep. Nineteen
[3:14] Speaker 2: seventy nine, October seventh, in Through the Outdoor, Zeppelin went
[3:18] Speaker 2: to number one on the album charts. And I I
[3:23] Speaker 2: believe this is right around the time that they lost
[3:26] Speaker 2: John Bonham, right, that's right. The album was released and
[3:30] Speaker 2: then then it happened.
[3:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, because the album I remember it was so well received, right,
[3:34] Speaker 1: The packaging was brillioned. It was a deep album, had hits,
[3:39] Speaker 1: had you know, deep tracks, on it.
[3:41] Speaker 3: Remember carauslambra on Oh.
[3:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was really it was really well received,
[3:46] Speaker 1: and that was in particular my recollection. You know why
[3:50] Speaker 1: even more everybody was floored by the death of John
[3:53] Speaker 1: Bonham because it was such a bright moment that album
[3:56] Speaker 1: and Zeppelin history in the evening was an they're great
[4:01] Speaker 1: long one on that, but a bunch of great songs.
[4:03] Speaker 3: He one.
[4:04] Speaker 2: But ye, yeah, this was the day I went to
[4:07] Speaker 2: number one on the US charts. October eighth, nineteen sixty six.
[4:12] Speaker 2: Cream made their London debut at London Polytechnic College.
[4:17] Speaker 3: That's wild thinking about it out of college. Yeah right,
[4:20] Speaker 3: you know absolutely.
[4:22] Speaker 2: You know, I wonder if artists look at dates. You know,
[4:27] Speaker 2: I'm kind of noticing a little led Zeppelin trend on
[4:29] Speaker 2: this date in different years. And seventy one they released
[4:34] Speaker 2: their fourth album with Stairway and Misty Mountain Hop and
[4:39] Speaker 2: you know, just when the levy breaks, just a barn
[4:42] Speaker 2: burner of an album. And you know, nineteen seventy nine,
[4:46] Speaker 2: the day before they had released In Through the Outdoor.
[4:49] Speaker 2: I wonder if if there's a pattern or logic in
[4:53] Speaker 2: release dates or superstition.
[4:56] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a really good question.
[4:58] Speaker 1: I wonder whether it has to do with the fact,
[5:00] Speaker 1: at least in European culture, that holidays are are very
[5:07] Speaker 1: sacred for citizens of the UK or Europe. They take
[5:13] Speaker 1: their time, They take a long period of time. Three weeks,
[5:17] Speaker 1: you know, a month off is not unusual compared to
[5:21] Speaker 1: the American attitude is grind a week out, you've taken
[5:25] Speaker 1: your vacation. If you did two, oh my god, how
[5:28] Speaker 1: could you? So?
[5:28] Speaker 3: I wonder whether.
[5:29] Speaker 1: It was lifestyle that yielded or I wonder whether it
[5:33] Speaker 1: had to do, you know, strategically on airplay releases and
[5:38] Speaker 1: that was what led it, or I think it was
[5:41] Speaker 1: the first, but superstition could have been there too.
[5:43] Speaker 3: You never know.
[5:44] Speaker 2: You know, you're also going when you do it. You're
[5:47] Speaker 2: talking about the fourth corner, right, talking about Christmas.
[5:49] Speaker 3: That's old sales and all that stuff.
[5:50] Speaker 2: So there's probably logic and from a from a marketing
[5:54] Speaker 2: and purchase album sales perspective, yeah, probably not a beast strategy,
[5:58] Speaker 2: that's right. Ninth nineteen forty, John Lennon was born in
[6:03] Speaker 2: Liverpool and by the way, thirty years later, thirty five
[6:09] Speaker 2: years later, Sean was born on John's thirty fifth birthday.
[6:14] Speaker 2: Crazy yep, and in eighty five This is all Beatles related.
[6:19] Speaker 2: On October ninth, Yoko dedicated the Imagined Mosaic Memorial in
[6:24] Speaker 2: Central Park. October ninth, the tenth of October, King Crimson
[6:29] Speaker 2: recorded their debut album in the Core of the Crimson King.
[6:32] Speaker 3: I love it. Yeah.
[6:35] Speaker 2: Seventy Black Sabbath released Paranoid in the US, and in
[6:40] Speaker 2: nineteen eighty on October tenth, John Bonham's funeral took place.
[6:45] Speaker 3: Oh everything comes full circle, Yeah, it does, it does.
[6:50] Speaker 2: I don't know if there's any anything worth stopping, you know,
[6:54] Speaker 2: on that four I did, by the way, just watch
[6:57] Speaker 2: again in the last year.
[6:59] Speaker 3: Song remains the same, oh really.
[7:02] Speaker 2: Which I thought was really fun, all right, And obviously
[7:04] Speaker 2: we saw the Zeppelin documentary as well, coming Led Zeppelin
[7:08] Speaker 2: or whatever it was.
[7:09] Speaker 3: That's called great great film.
[7:12] Speaker 2: October eleventh and sixty eight, Mary Hopkins Apple Records released
[7:18] Speaker 2: Mary Hopkins.
[7:19] Speaker 3: Those were the days, produced by holl McCartney. I loved it.
[7:23] Speaker 3: Great song. Yeah, I don't know that one. I just
[7:26] Speaker 3: know it's a.
[7:27] Speaker 1: Test almost like a song you would you would sing
[7:30] Speaker 1: at a pub over there.
[7:32] Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, gotcha, Yeah, beer drinking piny guinness kind of
[7:37] Speaker 2: in seventy five on October eleventh, Saturday Night Live premiered
[7:40] Speaker 2: on NBC. Of course, the show became iconic for iconic
[7:46] Speaker 2: rock acts and and music musicians of all genres YEP
