[0:01] Speaker 1: News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm
[0:03] Speaker 1: Doug Krisner.
[0:04] Speaker 2: The U.S.
[0:05] Speaker 1: Has again told American citizens not to travel to Russia
[0:08] Speaker 1: and those currently in Russia should depart immediately, given reports
[0:13] Speaker 1: of a suspected pneumonic plague. Earlier, Russian media reported the
[0:17] Speaker 1: death of a lab worker connected with a plague research
[0:20] Speaker 1: center in Siberia. At the same time, the Wall Street
[0:23] Speaker 1: Journal reports the U.S. has told Moscow its failure to
[0:27] Speaker 1: disclose details violates international health obligations. Here is Secretary of
[0:32] Speaker 1: State Marco Rubio.
[0:34] Speaker 3: We encourage Russia to be transparent and share more information
[0:37] Speaker 3: with the world so that all of us could react
[0:39] Speaker 3: accordingly and appropriately. But we'll have to make those decisions
[0:43] Speaker 3: on the basis of the information that we're learning and
[0:45] Speaker 3: are being provided. And so far, that's still quite limited.
[0:48] Speaker 1: That is Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Later in the day,
[0:51] Speaker 1: President Trump said he has a call scheduled with Russian
[0:54] Speaker 1: President Putin very soon to discuss this situation. Iran has
[0:59] Speaker 1: increased the pace of attacks on tankers in the Strait
[1:01] Speaker 1: of Hormuz in recent days. The UK Maritime Trade Operations
[1:05] Speaker 1: reported nine attacks in the Strait already this month. That
[1:09] Speaker 1: is half the total amount reported for all of September. Now,
[1:12] Speaker 1: previous periods of heavy strikes have led to brief reductions
[1:16] Speaker 1: in oil shipments, although they've often been followed by higher
[1:20] Speaker 1: volumes in subsequent days. Today, crude oil prices were a
[1:23] Speaker 1: little changed in New York trading. WTI closed at 89.44.
[1:27] Speaker 1: The equity market finished at all-time highs on optimism for
[1:32] Speaker 1: strong corporate results. The earning season is just a week away.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Bloomberg data show analysts are expecting S & P 500
[1:39] Speaker 1: profits to jump by about 25% in the third quarter
[1:43] Speaker 1: compared to last year. Strategists at Goldman Sachs are expecting
[1:46] Speaker 1: most companies to once again surpass consensus estimates. The S &
[1:51] Speaker 1: P 500 rose 0.6% to a record 7,818. The Nasdaq
[1:57] Speaker 1: Composite and the Nasdaq 100 also closed at all-time highs.
[2:01] Speaker 1: There was a rally in AI-related shares that helped to
[2:04] Speaker 1: buoy sentiment. AMD CEO Lisa Su is predicting very high
[2:09] Speaker 1: chip demand over the next few years. Today, shares in
[2:12] Speaker 1: advanced micro-devices were up 2.8%. to a record high. We
[2:16] Speaker 1: got reaction from Ali McCartney, Managing Director of Wealth Management
[2:20] Speaker 1: at UBS Private Wealth.
[2:22] Speaker 4: You know, AI is coming. We're maybe in the second
[2:24] Speaker 4: or third inning. We're already starting to see the things
[2:27] Speaker 4: we need to see to feel really constructive on the
[2:30] Speaker 4: revolution and the evolution in terms of usage coming up,
[2:34] Speaker 4: costs starting to come down in terms of tokenization. It's
[2:37] Speaker 4: going to have to happen.
[2:39] Speaker 1: That is Ali McCartney of UBS Private Wealth. Anthropics' mythos
[2:43] Speaker 1: AI model has increased global cybersecurity risk tenfold. That's the
[2:48] Speaker 1: assessment of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.
[2:51] Speaker 5: The downside is obviously what you read about with the
[2:55] Speaker 5: agents and mythos and all these things that can cause trouble.
[2:58] Speaker 5: And that's a legitimate concern. It's a real thing. I'm
[3:01] Speaker 5: not going to get hysterical over is it existential or not.
[3:04] Speaker 5: What we're doing is rolling up our sleeves and going
[3:06] Speaker 5: to work to fix it.
[3:07] Speaker 1: That is JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon speaking earlier to Bloomberg. Separately,
[3:12] Speaker 1: Anthropic is expanding access to its most advanced AI models
[3:16] Speaker 1: to a select group of organizations in collaboration with the U.S.
[3:20] Speaker 5: Government.
[3:20] Speaker 1: Now, those with access can carry out high-risk offensive testing
[3:24] Speaker 1: of safety systems designed to protect critical infrastructure. Cornell University
[3:30] Speaker 1: has appointed former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to
[3:34] Speaker 1: head an independent review of how the university prevents and
[3:38] Speaker 1: responds to claims of sexual assault. More from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett.
[3:42] Speaker 1: Yates is a partner at the law firm King & Spalding.
[3:45] Speaker 1: She was selected by the university's board of trustees amid
[3:48] Speaker 1: growing scrutiny over how Cornell handled sexual assault allegations stemming
[3:53] Speaker 1: from a 2024 incident. Concerns over Cornell's response resurfaced last month,
[3:59] Speaker 1: after a former student identified in court records as Jane
[4:02] Speaker 1: Doe alleged in a civil complaint that Cornell, the fraternity,
[4:06] Speaker 1: and her former sorority failed to protect her. In New York,
[4:10] Speaker 1: Charlie Pellett, Bloomberg Radio. Disney is seeking to halt an
[4:14] Speaker 1: early renewal application request of its ABC broadcast licenses. That
[4:19] Speaker 1: story from Matt Piper.
[4:20] Speaker 2: Disney's attorney says the process is clearly an attempt to
[4:23] Speaker 2: chill the broadcaster's free speech rights after President Trump's frequent
[4:27] Speaker 2: criticism of ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and even the
[4:30] Speaker 2: women of The View. A judge heard arguments Tuesday on
[4:33] Speaker 2: Disney's request for an order pausing the FCC's so-called early
[4:36] Speaker 2: renewal process while its lawsuit proceeds. The case is seen
[4:40] Speaker 2: as a test of claims that the Trump administration is
[4:42] Speaker 2: leveraging federal agencies to harass the president's perceived political enemies
[4:47] Speaker 2: and critics. Matt Piper, Bloomberg Radio.
[4:49] Speaker 1: SpaceX is reportedly looking to raise $ 40 billion to purchase
[4:53] Speaker 1: chips from NVIDIA. The Financial Times says SpaceX is looking
[4:57] Speaker 1: to raise about $ 10 billion in bank loans and $ 30
[5:00] Speaker 1: billion in investment-grade bonds. And the FT says Apollo Global
[5:05] Speaker 1: Management is expected to lead this deal. Apple is launching
[5:09] Speaker 1: a set of new smart home devices. They will include
[5:12] Speaker 1: a doorbell, a thermostat, and other accessories. These products will
[5:16] Speaker 1: be developed through a partnership with LG Electronics. Tennessee death
[5:20] Speaker 1: row inmate Krista Pike is conscious and speaking. Pike survived
[5:24] Speaker 1: an attempt by the state's Department of Correction to execute
[5:27] Speaker 1: her nearly a week ago. She received two doses of
[5:30] Speaker 1: a lethal injection drug, although the procedure was botched. Now,
[5:34] Speaker 1: Pike's attorneys said her recovery is medically unprecedented, and they
[5:39] Speaker 1: said her prognosis remains unclear, but at a minimum, A
[5:42] Speaker 1: long recovery is expected. In sports, the MLB Divisional Round
[5:47] Speaker 1: is underway, and in Game 3 of National League play,
[5:50] Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-1. The
[5:54] Speaker 1: Dodgers now lead that series two games to one, its
[5:56] Speaker 1: best to five. Meantime, on the West Coast, the Milwaukee
[6:00] Speaker 1: Brewers are facing off against the San Diego Padres. That
[6:03] Speaker 1: game is underway. And that is news when you want it.
[6:06] Speaker 1: With Bloomberg News Now, I'm Doug Krisner, and this is Bloomberg.
