[0:02] Speaker 1: News when you want it. With Bloomberg News Now, I'm
[0:04] Speaker 1: Doug Krisner.
[0:05] Speaker 2: The U.S.
[0:06] Speaker 1: May soon increase its military strength in the Persian Gulf.
[0:09] Speaker 1: We are told the Pentagon may deploy an additional aircraft
[0:12] Speaker 1: carrier along with 10,000 sailors and Marines. Now, this would
[0:16] Speaker 1: give the American military more options if President Trump were
[0:20] Speaker 1: to choose to escalate attacks on Iran. The Wall Street
[0:23] Speaker 1: Journal reports Trump told aides he's expecting to resume bombing
[0:27] Speaker 1: by the end of November. Here is Bloomberg's Brian Paich.
[0:30] Speaker 3: President Trump has been talking a lot lately about framing
[0:34] Speaker 3: the Iran war as this big decision that he has
[0:36] Speaker 3: to make. He's basically framing it as he could choose
[0:41] Speaker 3: to pursue a deal with Iran or he could choose
[0:44] Speaker 3: what he's framed as varying levels of military destruction. And
[0:49] Speaker 3: he's framed it, too, as a choice that Iran has
[0:51] Speaker 3: to make, whether they want to accept the deal or
[0:54] Speaker 3: go the military route.
[0:55] Speaker 1: That was Bloomberg's Brian Paich. Meantime, Iran's foreign minister suggested
[0:59] Speaker 1: in private talks recently that Tehran was willing to restore
[1:03] Speaker 1: access for nuclear inspectors in exchange for sanctions relief. Anthropic
[1:08] Speaker 1: is seeking to go public as soon as the middle
[1:11] Speaker 1: of November. We are told the firm has scheduled a
[1:14] Speaker 1: pre-IPO investor day for October the 14th. Formal marketing could
[1:18] Speaker 1: begin as soon as the week of November 9th. That
[1:21] Speaker 1: means shares could potentially begin trading before Thanksgiving. Now deliberations
[1:26] Speaker 1: are ongoing and the timeline could shift. We are told
[1:29] Speaker 1: investors believe a fair valuation for Anthropic is in the
[1:33] Speaker 1: range of $ 1. 8 trillion to $ 2 trillion. There was haven
[1:37] Speaker 1: buying today in U.S. Treasuries due to increased political and
[1:41] Speaker 1: financial risk in France. As a result, yields slid across
[1:44] Speaker 1: the U.S. Treasury curve. The two-year was down 9 basis
[1:48] Speaker 1: points to 4.79%. The 10-year lost 4 basis points to 5.24%.
[1:54] Speaker 1: And there were some other factors at play as well.
[1:56] Speaker 1: The latest U.S. manufacturing data were softer than expected, and
[2:00] Speaker 1: there were signs of stress in mortgaged-backed bonds as the
[2:04] Speaker 1: result of higher mortgage rates. Now, the drop in Treasury
[2:07] Speaker 1: yields supported the equity market on the first day of
[2:09] Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. We had the S & P rising
[2:12] Speaker 1: two-tenths of one percent. The Dow and the Nasdaq Comp
[2:15] Speaker 1: were each up a tenth of one percent. Fed Vice
[2:18] Speaker 1: Chair Philip Jefferson said it may take more time to
[2:21] Speaker 1: judge whether further interest rate hikes are necessary, and Jefferson
[2:25] Speaker 1: sees risk that inflation could remain elevated.
[2:28] Speaker 4: Any future adjustments in policy should be determined by carefully
[2:34] Speaker 4: examining trends in the data, the evolving outlook, and the
[2:38] Speaker 4: balance of risks. Since our September meeting, yields across the
[2:43] Speaker 4: term structure have increased further, a sign that investors are
[2:49] Speaker 4: reassessing the evolving macroeconomic landscape. My colleagues and I will
[2:55] Speaker 4: need to come to our own judgment, which may take
[2:58] Speaker 4: more time.
[2:59] Speaker 1: That is Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson speaking at the
[3:02] Speaker 1: University of Virginia. After the Bell Nike reported revenue for
[3:06] Speaker 1: the first quarter below the average estimate, the company cited
[3:09] Speaker 1: weakness in China as well as in sportswear and the
[3:12] Speaker 1: Jordan brand. We got reaction from Zachary Warring, equity analyst
[3:17] Speaker 1: at CFRA.
[3:18] Speaker 5: They can have a few of those brands where they
[3:19] Speaker 5: can target a higher price point and a higher income consumer,
[3:22] Speaker 5: but they're one of the biggest companies in the world
[3:25] Speaker 5: in terms of retail. So they have to appeal to
[3:29] Speaker 5: the mass consumer. And so they can't, you know, they
[3:32] Speaker 5: can do that with a few launches and a few
[3:34] Speaker 5: product lines, but they have to really focus on, I
[3:37] Speaker 5: do like that they're focusing on the operating side of
[3:39] Speaker 5: things here, because we think Nike can earn north of
[3:43] Speaker 5: $ 3 a share pretty easily if they really focus on
[3:46] Speaker 5: operating efficiency.
[3:47] Speaker 1: Zachary Warring, equity analyst at CFRA. Now, Nike also said
[3:51] Speaker 1: it's expecting revenue to decline in the high single digits
[3:55] Speaker 1: in the current fiscal year. Nike shares are down by 5%
[3:59] Speaker 1: in late U.S.
[4:00] Speaker 3: Trading.
[4:01] Speaker 1: Disney reportedly plans to cut hundreds of jobs as part
[4:04] Speaker 1: of a restructuring of its television operations. The Wall Street
[4:07] Speaker 1: Journal reports the overhaul will consolidate divisions. Layoffs have already
[4:12] Speaker 1: hit marketing as well as Pixar, ABC News, and ESPN.
[4:16] Speaker 1: On Tuesday, Disney laid off more than 300 people, most
[4:20] Speaker 1: of whom work in human resources and information technology. The
[4:25] Speaker 1: UAE is leading an investigation into an attempted deliberate crash
[4:29] Speaker 1: of a fly Dubai 737 MAX 8 en route from
[4:33] Speaker 1: Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday. One of the pilots
[4:36] Speaker 1: allegedly tried to stab his colleague and then tried to
[4:39] Speaker 1: crash the aircraft. Passengers intervened with one then managing an
[4:44] Speaker 1: emergency landing in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The Israeli government is
[4:48] Speaker 1: conducting its own inquiry. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the
[4:53] Speaker 1: pilot was from Oman.
[4:55] Speaker 2: Well, this is being investigated now. And as you know,
[4:59] Speaker 2: the attacker, the co-pilot who attacked the captain is now
[5:04] Speaker 2: being interrogated. But here's what we do know. First, we
[5:07] Speaker 2: know that he underwent Islamist radical indoctrination. That appears to
[5:15] Speaker 2: be something we're gathering from the information, his personal information.
[5:19] Speaker 1: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaking on Fox News. British
[5:23] Speaker 1: police say they have arrested a sixth man in London
[5:26] Speaker 1: in connection with a suspected terror plot at an airbase
[5:30] Speaker 1: used by the U.S. to launch strikes on Iran. The
[5:33] Speaker 1: suspect is a dual British-Iranian national. Five other men arrested
[5:38] Speaker 1: on Sunday have been released on bail. Prime Minister Andy
[5:41] Speaker 1: Burnham says the U.K. sees strong indications that Iran played
[5:45] Speaker 1: a part in the incident, although Iran denies involvement. In Tennessee,
[5:50] Speaker 1: the Department of Correction failed in its attempt to execute
[5:53] Speaker 1: Krista Pike on Wednesday evening. She survived two doses of
[5:57] Speaker 1: lethal injection before state officials suspended the execution and had
[6:01] Speaker 1: her taken to a hospital for medical care. Pike's lawyers
[6:05] Speaker 1: say she's in critical condition and receiving life-saving treatment. Tennessee
[6:09] Speaker 1: Governor Bill Lee is calling for an investigation, and he's
[6:12] Speaker 1: halting another scheduled execution.
[6:15] Speaker 6: The people of Tennessee have determined that the death penalty
[6:17] Speaker 6: is the appropriate penalty for the most heinous crimes in
[6:21] Speaker 6: this state. The people of Tennessee make that decision, and
[6:24] Speaker 6: my job is to make sure then that those sentences
[6:26] Speaker 6: are carried out.
[6:26] Speaker 1: That was Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. New York State AG
[6:30] Speaker 1: Letitia James will serve as special prosecutor to investigate a
[6:34] Speaker 1: woman's allegation that she was raped on the campus of
[6:37] Speaker 1: Cornell University in October 2024. Governor Kathy Hochul said she
[6:42] Speaker 1: has lost faith in the local district attorney's ability to
[6:46] Speaker 1: handle the case, citing newly released information that raises serious
[6:50] Speaker 1: questions about this investigation. And that is news when you
[6:53] Speaker 1: want it. With Bloomberg News Now, I'm Doug Krisner and
[6:56] Speaker 1: this is Bloomberg.
