[0:02] Speaker 1: News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now, I'm
[0:04] Speaker 1: Matt Piper. Saudi Arabia's main airport has come under renewed
[0:07] Speaker 1: attack from Iran-backed Houthi rebels. An unidentified projectile hit a
[0:12] Speaker 1: passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The
[0:16] Speaker 1: Saudi Civil Aviation Authority says the attack killed at least
[0:19] Speaker 1: one person and injured 11 others. The incident follows a
[0:22] Speaker 1: strike on the airport Saturday that killed 12 people and
[0:25] Speaker 1: injured more than 300. Here's Bloomberg's Michael Heath.
[0:29] Speaker 2: It's really, really makes life very, very challenging for trying
[0:33] Speaker 2: to maintain security there. And it sort of comes back
[0:35] Speaker 2: to this whole idea for the Gulf states that one
[0:37] Speaker 2: of their selling points has been their security. And when
[0:40] Speaker 2: you have a strike like this, 12 people killed, 300 injured.
[0:44] Speaker 2: I mean, it was a horrific attack. and then follow-ups there.
[0:48] Speaker 2: And it sort of speaks also to the abilities, the
[0:50] Speaker 2: capabilities of the Houthis in being able to do this
[0:53] Speaker 2: as well. So, you know, the question then is, does
[0:56] Speaker 2: the U.S. come in to provide some assistance to Saudi Arabia,
[0:59] Speaker 2: widening the war? It just throws up all sorts of questions.
[1:02] Speaker 1: That was Bloomberg's Michael Heath. Saudi authorities later said King
[1:06] Speaker 1: Fahd International Airport in Dammam was also attacked. The city
[1:10] Speaker 1: is on the Persian Gulf near Bahrain and Qatar. Iran
[1:13] Speaker 1: says the U.S. accepted some of Iran's seven conditions for
[1:17] Speaker 1: the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. A senior official
[1:20] Speaker 1: says there are ambiguities that remain in regards to other conditions.
[1:24] Speaker 1: President Trump says Ukraine and Russia have agreed to stop
[1:27] Speaker 1: attacking each other's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says
[1:31] Speaker 1: Ukraine supports the ceasefire and that it's important that Russia
[1:35] Speaker 1: support it as well. Zelensky on ABC's This Week.
[1:38] Speaker 3: We are asking President Trump to give them a signal
[1:42] Speaker 3: not to attack the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. It's a
[1:46] Speaker 3: fair deal. It's not the best deal. The best deal
[1:48] Speaker 3: is not to have a war to stop Putin. But
[1:52] Speaker 3: the first step is ceasefire.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaking on ABC. After Trump's announcement,
[2:00] Speaker 1: Zelensky said Russian strikes hit multiple Ukrainian power plants. Separately,
[2:04] Speaker 1: a senior NATO military official says Russia had more than
[2:08] Speaker 1: 50,000 casualties in Ukraine last month, with as many as
[2:11] Speaker 1: 28,000 personnel killed. Over the same period, the official says
[2:15] Speaker 1: Ukrainian forces suffered about 5,000 casualties. A federal judge has
[2:19] Speaker 1: ordered President Trump to cancel any remaining television commercials paid
[2:23] Speaker 1: for with millions of dollars in taxpayer money to promote
[2:26] Speaker 1: his political message. The judge has sided with a coalition
[2:29] Speaker 1: that challenged the ads. They said the ads were an
[2:32] Speaker 1: illegal misuse of funds. The judge tells the administration to
[2:36] Speaker 1: cancel any remaining ads, including any set to air tonight.
[2:40] Speaker 1: The administration said the ad campaign was already coming to
[2:42] Speaker 1: an end. The European Union is capping imports on Chinese
[2:46] Speaker 1: hybrid vehicles. Bloomberg's Monica Rick says that.
[2:50] Speaker 4: The EU will cap Chinese hybrid imports at 350,000 cars
[2:54] Speaker 4: per year and can increase by 6% annually, with the
[2:57] Speaker 4: safeguard measure taking effect as soon as December 1st. The
[3:00] Speaker 4: cap will apply to all imports of hybrids, not just
[3:03] Speaker 4: those originating from China, to comply with the World Trade
[3:06] Speaker 4: Organization's principle of non-discrimination. The agreement also includes China removing
[3:11] Speaker 4: tariffs on some auto parts and slashing duties for certain
[3:14] Speaker 4: products in half. Both sides are discussing ways to ease
[3:18] Speaker 4: export controls and licenses. Monica Ricks, Bloomberg Radio.
[3:22] Speaker 1: Pope Leo says he will undergo surgery in the coming
[3:24] Speaker 1: days to remove a nodule in his lung. Speaking during
[3:27] Speaker 1: his regular Sunday blessing, the Pope said doctors discover the
[3:31] Speaker 1: nodule in a localized, very initial phase. The Vatican says
[3:35] Speaker 1: after the surgery, the 71-year-old's recovery time should be about
[3:38] Speaker 1: a week. The Wall Street Journal says Amazon is in
[3:41] Speaker 1: talks to acquire artificial intelligence startup Descartes in a deal
[3:44] Speaker 1: that could be valued at around $ 7 billion. Descartes' software
[3:48] Speaker 1: makes it easier for developers to switch between different AI chips,
[3:52] Speaker 1: which is increasingly important as companies race to secure more
[3:55] Speaker 1: computing power. Founded in 2023, Descartes has raised more than
[3:59] Speaker 1: $ 400 million in venture capital funding. A busy week ahead
[4:03] Speaker 1: for earnings and economic data, including the report on U.S. inflation.
[4:07] Speaker 1: The latest data will factor into the Fed's decision-making process
[4:11] Speaker 1: with the next Fed announcement coming October 28th. Jennifer Lee
[4:14] Speaker 1: is senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.
[4:17] Speaker 5: Of course, you have to look at how broadly based
[4:20] Speaker 5: some of the price increases will be through the entire basket.
[4:25] Speaker 5: You know, we're looking for all the upper pressure coming
[4:27] Speaker 5: from will to be coming from energy. If there's more
[4:29] Speaker 5: coming from that, like from an airlines or health care or,
[4:33] Speaker 5: you know, or other different services or goods, then we're
[4:37] Speaker 5: going to start getting a bit more worried.
[4:39] Speaker 1: That was Jennifer Lee at BMO Capital Markets. And that's
[4:42] Speaker 1: news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm
[4:44] Speaker 1: Matt Piper and this is Bloomberg.
