[0:02] Speaker 1: News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now, I'm
[0:04] Speaker 1: Doug Krisner. China obtained parts from an F-35 stealth fighter
[0:08] Speaker 1: jet after a UPS employee missed an email warning not
[0:13] Speaker 1: to route the shipment through Hong Kong. More from Bloomberg's
[0:16] Speaker 1: Amy Morris.
[0:17] Speaker 2: New details shed more light on an incident that allowed
[0:20] Speaker 2: China to gain access to some of the U.S. 's
[0:22] Speaker 2: most sensitive military technology. The shipment was originally meant to
[0:27] Speaker 2: travel to San Francisco through South Korea and Taiwan, but
[0:30] Speaker 2: it was late leaving Australia and was mistakenly routed via
[0:34] Speaker 2: Hong Kong to speed up delivery. The incident has prompted
[0:37] Speaker 2: investigations by the Pentagon and the State Department, and it
[0:41] Speaker 2: has alarmed U.S. lawmakers who have demanded a review of
[0:44] Speaker 2: the global supply chain for U.S. armaments. In Washington, Amy Morris,
[0:48] Speaker 2: Bloomberg Radio.
[0:49] Speaker 1: Samsung Electronics posted record profit for its latest quarter. These
[0:53] Speaker 1: results reflect surging memory chip prices and spending on AI infrastructure.
[0:58] Speaker 1: Samsung's operating profit climbed more than eight times the level
[1:02] Speaker 1: seen just a year ago. And we got reaction from
[1:04] Speaker 1: Sanjeev Rana, head of North Asia Semiconductors Research at CLSA.
[1:09] Speaker 2: There is a very strong demand visibility.
[1:12] Speaker 3: Demand continues to exceed supply and HPM pricing is poised
[1:16] Speaker 3: for a big step up in 2027.
[1:18] Speaker 1: That was Sanjeev Rana from CLSA. David Ellison and his
[1:22] Speaker 1: family invested nearly $ 17 billion to complete Paramount Skydance's acquisition
[1:28] Speaker 1: of Warner Brothers Discovery. Public filing show, Ellison and his
[1:32] Speaker 1: family acquired an estimated 1.4 billion shares in a stock
[1:36] Speaker 1: offering of this newly merged business. Those shares were priced
[1:40] Speaker 1: at $ 12 each. The exact source of the Ellisons' funds
[1:44] Speaker 1: is not known. The new company, incidentally, is now called
[1:47] Speaker 1: Skydance Corporation, and its shares have fallen about 9%. since
[1:51] Speaker 1: this merger closed on Tuesday. The stock market retreated today
[1:55] Speaker 1: from record highs as industrial shares declined.
[1:58] Speaker 2: The U.S.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Government is investigating potential anti-competitive conduct in the manufacturing and
[2:04] Speaker 1: distribution of farm equipment. Today, Caterpillar fell 5.7%, Deere was
[2:09] Speaker 1: down 3.8%, the Dow Industrial Average fell 0.6% and the
[2:14] Speaker 1: S & P and the Nasdaq Composite both dropped from
[2:17] Speaker 1: record highs, each losing 0.2%. Minutes from the last Fed
[2:21] Speaker 1: meeting were hawkish. All committee members backed the decision to
[2:25] Speaker 1: raise interest rates last month. Many supported the move to
[2:28] Speaker 1: guard against the risk of intensifying inflation, particularly given signs
[2:33] Speaker 1: of economic acceleration. Here is Bloomberg's Michael McKee.
[2:36] Speaker 4: The idea that all of the participants, all 19 of them,
[2:39] Speaker 4: agreed with the rate hike, and that means even people
[2:43] Speaker 4: who might have been dovish but not voting, suggests that
[2:46] Speaker 4: they do see as a unit the need for higher rates,
[2:50] Speaker 4: and they did see essentially a need for higher rates
[2:53] Speaker 4: by the end of the year.
[2:55] Speaker 1: That is Bloomberg's Michael McKee. An oil tanker was struck
[2:58] Speaker 1: by projectiles off the coast of Qatar on Wednesday. This
[3:01] Speaker 1: is the first reported strike of a tanker deep within
[3:04] Speaker 1: the Persian Gulf in about a month, and it comes
[3:07] Speaker 1: as Iran has increased the pace of attacks on ships
[3:10] Speaker 1: in the Strait of Hormuz. Separately, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels
[3:14] Speaker 1: struck two airports in Saudi Arabia over the last two days.
[3:18] Speaker 1: Three people were killed and dozens injured. The Saudi-led coalition
[3:22] Speaker 1: in Yemen said, It had destroyed military targets belonging to
[3:26] Speaker 1: the Houthis in retaliation. The White House has reportedly asked
[3:30] Speaker 1: the Pentagon to develop strike options against Iranian targets. The
[3:35] Speaker 1: Atlantic reports they could be exercised ahead of the midterms.
[3:38] Speaker 1: Any strike campaign would put roughly 50,000 U.S. troops in
[3:42] Speaker 1: the region as well as those of Gulf allies. Now
[3:46] Speaker 1: the risks include Iranian retaliation and further depletion of America's
[3:50] Speaker 1: munition stockpiles. The World Health Organization wants Russia to provide
[3:55] Speaker 1: more information on the death of a lab worker in
[3:57] Speaker 1: an anti-plague research institute in Siberia. The WHO says it
[4:02] Speaker 1: does not yet have the full picture of the event,
[4:05] Speaker 1: and it's not able to conduct a full risk assessment.
[4:09] Speaker 1: Earlier media reports indicate about 200 contacts of the lab
[4:12] Speaker 1: worker had been quarantined. Here is WHO Director General Dr.
[4:17] Speaker 1: Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
[4:20] Speaker 3: WHO has requested further information on the lab tests conducted
[4:24] Speaker 3: on the individual who died and the contacts, more detail
[4:29] Speaker 3: on what prompted the public health measures, and details about
[4:33] Speaker 3: the health status of the contacts. We have also sought
[4:37] Speaker 3: verification of media reports of a second employee with pneumonia
[4:42] Speaker 3: of undetermined cause.
[4:43] Speaker 1: That was WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Now,
[4:48] Speaker 1: Russia has told the WHO that no cases of plague
[4:51] Speaker 1: had been recorded in the region, and it says the
[4:54] Speaker 1: contacts had been cleared, but additional questions do remain, and
[4:58] Speaker 1: that includes the cause of the lab worker's death. The
[5:01] Speaker 1: Democratic National Committee is suing the Trump administration for unlawfully
[5:05] Speaker 1: using government money to pay for video advertisements lauding the president.
[5:10] Speaker 1: The complaint alleges the ad campaign violates a congressional prohibition
[5:14] Speaker 1: on using taxpayer dollars for unauthorized publicity or propaganda. Now,
[5:20] Speaker 1: the president has faced blowback for these ads, mostly from
[5:23] Speaker 1: Democrats and critics of the administration, but also from Senate
[5:27] Speaker 1: Republican leader John Thune. Thune told reporters the ad should
[5:31] Speaker 1: not be paid for with taxpayer dollars. In sports, the
[5:35] Speaker 1: MLB divisional playoffs are underway, and in Game 4 of
[5:39] Speaker 1: American League action, the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Chicago White
[5:43] Speaker 1: Sox 9-3. The White Sox lead the series 2-1. It's
[5:47] Speaker 1: a best of five. Meantime, the Tampa Bay Rays defeated
[5:50] Speaker 1: the New York Yankees 4-3. And Tampa Bay will now
[5:54] Speaker 1: advance to the American League Conference Series. In Game 4
[5:58] Speaker 1: of the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the
[6:01] Speaker 1: Atlanta Braves 4-1.
[6:03] Speaker 2: L.A.
[6:03] Speaker 1: Will advance to the National League Conference Series. And right now,
[6:07] Speaker 1: we've got the Milwaukee Brewers facing off against the San
[6:10] Speaker 1: Diego Padres. That game is underway. And that is news
[6:14] Speaker 1: when you want it. With Bloomberg News Now, I'm Doug
[6:16] Speaker 1: Krisner and this is Bloomberg.
