[0:00] Speaker 1: What's Up a Sericondre And this is Bombing, the podcast
[0:02] Speaker 1: where I talked to comedians, artists, and other interesting people
[0:04] Speaker 1: about the worst bombs of their career. On today's episode,
[0:07] Speaker 1: we have my friends married comedy legends, the Tasha Laguerrero
[0:12] Speaker 1: and Mosha Kasher. We talked about bombing at Catholic schools,
[0:14] Speaker 1: getting told you're too short by your agent, going to
[0:17] Speaker 1: rehab as a kid, and more.
[0:19] Speaker 2: Enjoy and after you do, make sure you check out
[0:22] Speaker 2: the Endless Honeymoon podcast.
[0:27] Speaker 3: Bombing with Eric Andre.
[0:34] Speaker 1: Tell me the worst bomb of your life. Give me
[0:38] Speaker 1: any couple, say a couple, just worst shows, stand up television,
[0:45] Speaker 1: a commercial, anything.
[0:46] Speaker 2: Oh you know.
[0:47] Speaker 4: I was on the writing staff for the Movie Awards
[0:49] Speaker 4: one year. It was right after we had Chris Rock
[0:51] Speaker 4: on the Champs and uh like maybe two months later,
[0:55] Speaker 4: and he was a presenter and he came in and
[0:59] Speaker 4: I made a real like performance of like crossing past
[1:03] Speaker 4: all the other writers to like say hi, And I
[1:06] Speaker 4: was like I kind of like pushed him out of
[1:08] Speaker 4: the way, Like no.
[1:09] Speaker 5: No, he was really exciting.
[1:10] Speaker 2: I was like trying to. I was like trying to.
[1:13] Speaker 4: I mean I wanted them to see that I knew him,
[1:17] Speaker 4: you know what I mean. It was like a real ego,
[1:19] Speaker 4: actual and I like crossed, passed, excuse me everybody, and
[1:22] Speaker 4: I was like Rock and you know that look where
[1:27] Speaker 4: someone like zero percent knows who the fuck you are
[1:30] Speaker 4: like and I and I just immediately was like, you
[1:33] Speaker 4: know from from Neil, from Neil's podcast.
[1:36] Speaker 2: I gave Neil the whole podcast. I unco hosted the podcast.
[1:40] Speaker 2: That was a bomb. I think he meets a lot
[1:42] Speaker 2: of people every day.
[1:44] Speaker 4: But it was the Rock that was the part that
[1:46] Speaker 4: was really pathetic. It wasn't like, hey, Chris, do you
[1:48] Speaker 4: remember it was Rock my old friend you met.
[1:55] Speaker 6: I would say every day I say that, nice to
[1:57] Speaker 6: meet you, and someone's like, we've met You.
[2:00] Speaker 2: Did that to me for like the first three years.
[2:01] Speaker 2: Is that true? Every time we met?
[2:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, we were doing like show Caroline together.
[2:08] Speaker 2: I'm pretty fucking that's the one to hurt the most.
[2:11] Speaker 2: I'm like, come on, she se me in bed reason.
[2:15] Speaker 1: Multiple times, met you in New York at Carolines multiple times,
[2:18] Speaker 1: we did shows together. Then you came to La met
[2:21] Speaker 1: you multiple times and you were like, hey, nice to finally,
[2:24] Speaker 1: nice to meet you.
[2:26] Speaker 2: Good. No, no, actually I'm sorry not finally nice to meet you.
[2:28] Speaker 6: Okay, I have to tell you something because I must.
[2:30] Speaker 6: I'm just older than you, so you were rude. I
[2:33] Speaker 6: was already established. But here's a great bomb.
[2:37] Speaker 2: Okay.
[2:38] Speaker 5: Eric was on last commanding.
[2:42] Speaker 2: Yes.
[2:43] Speaker 6: And Eric did this thing where he said the word
[2:46] Speaker 6: boot cocky in a joke and for some reason that
[2:48] Speaker 6: like was like, I was like, okay, boot hockey, you're out.
[2:54] Speaker 5: I was just trying to be funny or something.
[2:55] Speaker 1: And I remember I didn't even believe that was coming
[2:57] Speaker 1: from you. I thought you had your ear wigs in
[2:59] Speaker 1: and what is it.
[3:01] Speaker 6: The producers were like, you have to let some people
[3:04] Speaker 6: get out, geta I was accepting everyone, so I was like, okay.
[3:07] Speaker 5: He said, but cocky, he's out. It was the coolest thing.
[3:11] Speaker 6: And this is how I knew Eric was going to
[3:12] Speaker 6: be so successful because we knew each other.
[3:14] Speaker 5: I had admitted to know.
[3:16] Speaker 2: I'd forgotten him every time we met for five years.
[3:20] Speaker 6: Eric had my number and he texted me and he
[3:22] Speaker 6: goes because I was like, sorry, you're you can't go forward.
[3:26] Speaker 6: And it was me and Greg Geralder and Andy Killer
[3:28] Speaker 6: and Eric texted me and he's like, I just want
[3:30] Speaker 6: you to know that I'm totally cool, and I know
[3:33] Speaker 6: that you've got a thing in your ear and we're
[3:35] Speaker 6: all good and you know, love, and it was like
[3:37] Speaker 6: so mature and so cool and no one else did
[3:40] Speaker 6: anything like that, and I was like, well, it was
[3:43] Speaker 6: just so cool because you were like you were so savvy.
[3:46] Speaker 5: You're like I already know how this worked.
[3:49] Speaker 6: So I was like, wow, Eric, is really that's a
[3:51] Speaker 6: that was a class act.
[3:53] Speaker 5: You don't remember that.
[3:55] Speaker 2: You don't remember that.
[4:00] Speaker 6: No, it really touched me because I was like, I
[4:02] Speaker 6: had never done anything that big.
[4:04] Speaker 5: Because how do you set you must?
[4:05] Speaker 2: You seemed cool, calm and collected. I thought you had.
[4:08] Speaker 2: I thought everybody was but you.
[4:11] Speaker 6: But usually your ego gets involved if you're doing an
[4:14] Speaker 6: audition to be on a show in front of people
[4:17] Speaker 6: and someone's like your friend is like sorry, I.
[4:20] Speaker 1: Never like I didn't grow up with Last Comic Standing,
[4:24] Speaker 1: like it came out when we.
[4:25] Speaker 5: Were like I'm just saying in general.
[4:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, but it wasn't like, oh no, like Lauren Michaels
[4:30] Speaker 1: saw me at a show and I bombed and I
[4:32] Speaker 1: won't be on Saturday Night Live, Like there was no
[4:37] Speaker 1: it didn't have like legacy to it, so I didn't.
[4:39] Speaker 2: I didn't you even care for real?
[4:41] Speaker 1: No, I wasn't like this is how I get fame.
[4:44] Speaker 1: I didn't believe it. I was skeptical of the show. Oh,
[4:47] Speaker 1: I actually was like, I was like, I think this
[4:48] Speaker 1: show might be a curse.
[4:50] Speaker 2: What was a scuttle about on Natasha hosting? Do you
[4:52] Speaker 2: remember that where people talking shit? The scuttle?
[4:54] Speaker 5: No one, he didn't even he didn't even care about.
[4:56] Speaker 2: This from fucking nineteen fifty six. What does that mean.
[4:58] Speaker 2: I'm from nineteen eighty six. That's That's what it means.
[5:02] Speaker 2: That's my pastor.
[5:02] Speaker 5: I don't talk about it.
[5:03] Speaker 6: I just that was something that was very cool and
[5:07] Speaker 6: you I would like to do it the.
[5:08] Speaker 2: First compliment you've ever given me. You guys have a
[5:11] Speaker 2: weird talking about Is there a weird tension? No, not
[5:13] Speaker 2: at all. For sure here a sexual Dre's definitely a
[5:16] Speaker 2: sexual chemistry. Yeah, you guys are gonna fuck tonight. It's possible.
[5:20] Speaker 1: Do you guys are just schedule? You're fucking my friend
[5:22] Speaker 1: as a kid as a schedule fucking girl.
[5:25] Speaker 2: Well, I will say friend your note to it?
[5:26] Speaker 3: I won't.
[5:27] Speaker 2: That's so happy.
[5:28] Speaker 5: Is it a wife or a girlfriend?
[5:30] Speaker 1: It's his girlfriend that he's been with for a decade ago,
[5:33] Speaker 1: the mother of the child.
[5:34] Speaker 2: It's a mother of the job. No, we don't schedule it. No,
[5:38] Speaker 2: I do a lot of you just get your bone off.
[5:40] Speaker 2: It's just it's improved. Mostly. We did have a like
[5:45] Speaker 2: a show at the ground Links. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we
[5:48] Speaker 2: had a show this weekend.
[5:50] Speaker 4: We went away to Palm Springs because it was her
[5:52] Speaker 4: birthday and birthday thank you. She was in a bathing
[5:56] Speaker 4: suit a lot, so my dick was on rock and
[5:59] Speaker 4: we were staying in the room with with our kid,
[6:02] Speaker 4: and it was just like we thought about maybe trying
[6:05] Speaker 4: to like lock the door to the bathroom. But we
[6:07] Speaker 4: tried that one time and she starts the kids started
[6:09] Speaker 4: knocking like she knew something was up.
[6:11] Speaker 2: She was like, let me in, let me in.
[6:13] Speaker 6: It's hard when you're on vacation or traveling or even
[6:15] Speaker 6: doing work and traveling with a kid, because like renting
[6:17] Speaker 6: two hotel rooms is kind of the kinds of places
[6:19] Speaker 6: I want to stay at.
[6:20] Speaker 5: It's not always affordable.
[6:22] Speaker 2: It is interesting that you pissed on us at one
[6:24] Speaker 2: point in our careers. That's I didn't pee on you.
[6:27] Speaker 2: You did. Actually I peed on you.
[6:29] Speaker 5: Yes, in our hot tub and we had.
[6:31] Speaker 1: Durin got on you. Well you let me pee in
[6:33] Speaker 1: the hot tub?
[6:34] Speaker 4: Yeah, we did, because commitment. What do you mean, Why
[6:37] Speaker 4: you're you drink a gallon of ranch?
[6:38] Speaker 2: Why that's discussed? Why do that was your personal that's know.
[6:43] Speaker 5: It was on camera and it was for a laugh,
[6:45] Speaker 5: and it was funny.
[6:46] Speaker 6: And then the truth is kids, we emptied it and
[6:49] Speaker 6: then filled it back up.
[6:50] Speaker 2: Kids peeing hot tubs all the time. That's what chlorine's for. Disgusting.
[6:54] Speaker 4: You ever see the sign that said, Oohl, notice there's
[6:57] Speaker 4: no pee in the pool. Let's keep it that way.
[6:59] Speaker 5: He's not our seven year old.
[7:00] Speaker 2: I don't, I don't. I don't know what you're talking about.
[7:03] Speaker 2: You didn't grow up with you know.
[7:04] Speaker 1: What I'll tell you, Sarah sermon is.
[7:06] Speaker 5: The best diary diary of.
[7:10] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[7:10] Speaker 1: She goes, I went to a public pool. I saw
[7:12] Speaker 1: jacuzzie that said I had a sign. If you've had
[7:14] Speaker 1: diary in the last two weeks, you're not allowed in
[7:16] Speaker 1: the hot tub. And she goes, how about you just
[7:19] Speaker 1: say no Jews allowed?
[7:23] Speaker 5: Why did Jews have diarrhea?
[7:25] Speaker 2: We got stomach We we are neurotic and ancient. We're very anxious. Okay,
[7:29] Speaker 2: we got to talk about bombing.
[7:30] Speaker 5: I was telling Mosh on the way over here.
[7:32] Speaker 6: I don't have any like elaborate stories, but I do
[7:34] Speaker 6: remember being heckled in Atlantic City and this.
[7:37] Speaker 5: Guy was just stood up and was like wrap it
[7:39] Speaker 5: up like this, like Guido type.
[7:43] Speaker 3: You know.
[7:44] Speaker 5: It was like from a.
[7:47] Speaker 4: There are certain heckles out there that are really difficult to.
[7:52] Speaker 2: Respond to. Wrap it up is in that zone. I
[7:55] Speaker 2: had a guy.
[7:56] Speaker 5: Well, especially when you're a young comic, you don't really.
[7:59] Speaker 2: Have comeback shop.
[8:00] Speaker 4: Yeah, I had a guy in Ireland. Ireland was one
[8:03] Speaker 4: of my most epic bombs ever. I did the Kilkenny
[8:06] Speaker 4: Cat Laughs. Festal you ever do that. It's a festival
[8:09] Speaker 4: in the like hinterlands of Ireland, like like in the
[8:12] Speaker 4: in the in like a medieval kind of country village.
[8:16] Speaker 4: And I remember the.
[8:19] Speaker 2: Like speak Gaelic for real. Well they they it's like.
[8:22] Speaker 4: A it's like a theme park kind of place, but
[8:25] Speaker 4: it's you think it's going to be charming, but it's
[8:27] Speaker 4: actually you're in the country. You're in the fucking deep road,
[8:32] Speaker 4: you know. And I remember the first night I did
[8:34] Speaker 4: my show, it went well, and that's.
[8:37] Speaker 2: When the reviewers came.
[8:39] Speaker 4: They do reviews at at these like UK festivals, and
[8:44] Speaker 4: not that it's part of the UK, but the reviewers came,
[8:46] Speaker 4: so if you'd read the reviews, it would have seemed
[8:48] Speaker 4: like I was having a good time. But after that show,
[8:50] Speaker 4: everything every show went progressively worse and worse.
[8:54] Speaker 2: I don't know what it was. I mean, first well,
[8:57] Speaker 2: I do know on some level what it was.
[8:59] Speaker 4: I went and saw, you know, Tim Key, you know
[9:00] Speaker 4: who he is, like a really sort of artsy, like
[9:03] Speaker 4: he's crazy hair, maybe very artistic, does a lot of
[9:08] Speaker 4: poems that he pulls out of his pocket like and
[9:11] Speaker 4: really an inspired performer. I when you saw him the
[9:14] Speaker 4: first night and was like, oh god, this guy the
[9:16] Speaker 4: kind of guy that makes you feel jealous.
[9:17] Speaker 1: When you see that, you're like, oh fuck, this guy's
[9:19] Speaker 1: baby's doing new shit that I saw that and I
[9:21] Speaker 1: was like, this guy's fucking so good.
[9:23] Speaker 2: Then the by the end of the week, tim Key.
[9:25] Speaker 4: The rumor was that he was having food thrown at
[9:28] Speaker 4: him at his shows. So that was like my saving grace, Like, okay,
[9:32] Speaker 4: tim Key, my artistic sort of jealousy inspirer is getting
[9:37] Speaker 4: like deep Fried hagis costat in a long country I'm good, right,
[9:43] Speaker 4: But at the last show, and not only were they
[9:47] Speaker 4: mean to me and not laughing at me, they were
[9:49] Speaker 4: making they people would make fun of me on the
[9:52] Speaker 4: way home, like like unrelated people.
[9:54] Speaker 2: Not people at the show, just people just way. Yeah.
[9:58] Speaker 4: I'd be walking back to telling people just be like
[10:00] Speaker 4: pointing at me and laughing, Oh my.
[10:02] Speaker 2: God, like head. May I prove my point that it
[10:06] Speaker 2: was not well?
[10:07] Speaker 4: First of all, First of all, they the last show
[10:12] Speaker 4: I did. I was on stage and a guy got
[10:14] Speaker 4: up and very similarly, he just screams next.
[10:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, next is hard to get.
[10:18] Speaker 1: It's just I know how to cut back, come back
[10:20] Speaker 1: from Okay, this is an old comeback.
[10:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, it's kind of BROI but you suck.
[10:26] Speaker 1: I would say, if someone goes you suck, I would
[10:28] Speaker 1: go you swallow, go huger dick.
[10:30] Speaker 2: With your butthole. I'd always like to be guaranteed. But
[10:37] Speaker 2: next is hard to I got.
[10:39] Speaker 1: I bombed opening up for Griz Rock. I love rock,
[10:44] Speaker 1: and I got I got a big next and I crumbled.
[10:49] Speaker 2: How can you not cry?
[10:50] Speaker 5: I remember what was this recently now?
[10:55] Speaker 2: I want to say eight or nine years ago.
[10:57] Speaker 4: Yeah, he screamed next, and I just thought, I thought,
[10:59] Speaker 4: I hope I want you to die. Next, I want
[11:02] Speaker 4: you to I want you crash into a brick wall
[11:07] Speaker 4: with your family in the car, catch on fire.
[11:09] Speaker 2: And die.
[11:09] Speaker 4: And when I say I thought that, I mean I
[11:11] Speaker 4: screamed that into the microphone as loud as I could go.
[11:16] Speaker 2: No, it does it.
[11:17] Speaker 5: They were on your side there.
[11:23] Speaker 4: So after that show, that was like the eighth bad
[11:25] Speaker 4: show in a row. Bomb after jo after it was
[11:27] Speaker 4: like a crescendo of bombing. And next was the final one.
[11:31] Speaker 4: And I was walking back to my hotel room and
[11:34] Speaker 4: I'd been being made fun of the whole weekend long
[11:36] Speaker 4: and this is it was like one in the morning
[11:41] Speaker 4: and this old man, this old like eighty year old man,
[11:45] Speaker 4: stop me in the streets and he goes, He's like,
[11:48] Speaker 4: what's your name? And I was like it's Moosha.
[11:52] Speaker 2: He goes, what do you What are you doing in Ireland?
[11:54] Speaker 2: And I was like comedy, I guess kind of, And
[11:58] Speaker 2: he's like, let me tell.
[11:59] Speaker 7: You something in motion. We appreciate how far you came,
[12:03] Speaker 7: We know how far you traveled to be here. We
[12:05] Speaker 7: appreciate you coming out this way to entertain. Thank you, lad,
[12:09] Speaker 7: thank you for being here.
[12:10] Speaker 4: Wow, and I was like basically, I was like thank you.
[12:15] Speaker 4: You know, I'm like this whole in my mind, I'm
[12:18] Speaker 4: like this hole, No, he was just a man in
[12:21] Speaker 4: the street, okay, and I go this. Everything I said
[12:27] Speaker 4: he was the guy said next.
[12:31] Speaker 2: Came in my mind.
[12:32] Speaker 4: I was like wow this and I go thank you man,
[12:35] Speaker 4: and I'm thinking this re this reinterprets my whole experience here.
[12:40] Speaker 4: I thought that this was a bad place, that these
[12:43] Speaker 4: were bad people, that I was having an alienating and
[12:46] Speaker 4: antagonistic experience. But with this simple little bit of human kindness,
[12:50] Speaker 4: I now realized like I just had some bad luck.
[12:53] Speaker 4: I had a bad set or two, I met some
[12:54] Speaker 4: bad people. Like this human to human interaction made me
[12:58] Speaker 4: reinterpret this whole trip. And I was like thank you,
[13:00] Speaker 4: and I start walking away. I'm like a night sir.
[13:03] Speaker 4: And he calls after me and he goes, hey, mosha,
[13:06] Speaker 4: and I turn around and goes I swear to God, He's.
[13:08] Speaker 5: Like, I'm giving you a finger, and it's like it was.
[13:14] Speaker 2: Like a fucking it was like you know those huts,
[13:18] Speaker 2: you know those things, fucking rude and true, like it
[13:23] Speaker 2: really happened.
[13:24] Speaker 4: It was such a psychedelic form of cruelty that I
[13:27] Speaker 4: couldn't even like, I couldn't even like learn a lesson
[13:32] Speaker 4: from it. It was just like a stone that I
[13:34] Speaker 4: put in my backpack full of human experiences.
[13:36] Speaker 1: So he like gas lit you with this like overly.
[13:43] Speaker 2: Complimentary, gushing thing. I couldn't. He really took the heart
[13:47] Speaker 2: and then followed up with like.
[13:49] Speaker 4: A fucking play like frozen bar at the World series,
[13:54] Speaker 4: like I couldn't.
[13:56] Speaker 2: I was astounded. I was in shock, and I had
[14:00] Speaker 2: so un necessary And.
[14:04] Speaker 4: This is after the eighth bomb in a row, and
[14:06] Speaker 4: the worst one of all, this is my experience on
[14:09] Speaker 4: the walk home. And here's the worst part I had
[14:13] Speaker 4: to By the way, I do know what was going
[14:15] Speaker 4: wrong for me comedically. I was a new comedian and
[14:20] Speaker 4: I didn't know how to pivot, and there was a
[14:24] Speaker 4: disconnect between what I would say and what I meant,
[14:29] Speaker 4: Like if I said something sarcastically, they would take it
[14:32] Speaker 4: at face value. And maybe it was because they couldn't
[14:36] Speaker 4: translate my extreme like hipster bitch americanism, or maybe it
[14:41] Speaker 4: was because I wasn't a sophisticated enough comedian to like
[14:44] Speaker 4: be able to give it over. But I remember I
[14:46] Speaker 4: used to have this opener where I would often people
[14:50] Speaker 4: would I used to have like a weirder look, and
[14:53] Speaker 4: remember my haircut.
[14:54] Speaker 2: Like the like the gittler. I called it the gay
[14:56] Speaker 2: hitler like it was. It's sort of similar to run
[14:58] Speaker 2: I've got going on, but it was more extreme for
[15:00] Speaker 2: the best twenty five years. That's very nice of you
[15:02] Speaker 2: to say, we don't drink, so you age, will you
[15:04] Speaker 2: look good and you do everything? That's true. It's a
[15:07] Speaker 2: half black part. It's not the Jewish bird, that's right.
[15:11] Speaker 5: So all the people do take things literally, well, yeah, I.
[15:13] Speaker 2: Would, they would.
[15:13] Speaker 1: I remember being also iron irony doesn't translate sometimes.
[15:17] Speaker 6: I was an Amsterdam and I was just like, I
[15:18] Speaker 6: don't think women are funny either, And this woman's like.
[15:20] Speaker 5: If she don't think women are funny, why was she
[15:22] Speaker 5: on the stud in the front row?
[15:25] Speaker 4: Wow, well, you're American too, and there's already strikes against you.
[15:28] Speaker 2: There are.
[15:28] Speaker 4: I would say the crowds in Ireland were unbelievably forgiving
[15:31] Speaker 4: of Irish hackery and unbelievably stingy of anything American. You
[15:36] Speaker 4: were at such a deficit. But if you had, if
[15:39] Speaker 4: you had an Irish accent, you could be straight up
[15:41] Speaker 4: doing road comedy from eighty one and they build.
[15:44] Speaker 1: It's not music, music's universal, right, comedy's cultural.
[15:49] Speaker 6: I remember I was in Albany and this was really bad.
[15:52] Speaker 6: It was like one of my first headlining gigs and
[15:54] Speaker 6: I bombed pretty bad, and I got a call from
[15:57] Speaker 6: my agent and they're like.
[15:58] Speaker 8: Oh boy, we're gonna switch was the opener, Oh boy, you.
[16:03] Speaker 2: Were the head I'm the host almost.
[16:06] Speaker 1: My mom's so bad one time at a Catholic college
[16:12] Speaker 1: that the principle of the school wrote an entire apology
[16:16] Speaker 1: for my set and my behavior and my agent, my
[16:19] Speaker 1: college agent fired me.
[16:22] Speaker 2: Like that's how hard I bought.
[16:23] Speaker 5: I should think it's cool.
[16:25] Speaker 2: You know.
[16:26] Speaker 1: I mean she was like a quacka doo like whatever,
[16:29] Speaker 1: fly by night, Like yeah.
[16:33] Speaker 2: She emailed me.
[16:34] Speaker 1: She goes, I'm getting calls from the school blah blah blah,
[16:38] Speaker 1: help like this I don't need We're through. And I
[16:41] Speaker 1: remember being like so heartbroken. This is like I'm not
[16:44] Speaker 1: twenty five six, but it was. I was not prepared
[16:49] Speaker 1: to do an hour clean. I didn't have five minutes
[16:53] Speaker 1: of anything, let alone like an hour of clean. Catholic
[16:57] Speaker 1: school approved. She was also r and Doug great to
[17:00] Speaker 1: play they're very they're very rigid, they're very UPTIGHTND references.
[17:05] Speaker 5: They don't know who Judy Garland.
[17:06] Speaker 1: Is, like, they have no life experience or if anybody
[17:09] Speaker 1: everything you do.
[17:10] Speaker 2: A lot of Judy Garland, you guys are doing.
[17:17] Speaker 1: I thought when I started doing comedy of my colleges, hell, yeah,
[17:20] Speaker 1: it's gonna be a spring break.
[17:22] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[17:22] Speaker 6: Now they're like, I literally shared a stage. I shared
[17:27] Speaker 6: a stage with Jello wrestling at.
[17:28] Speaker 1: A college from the Dead Kennedy's legend.
[17:33] Speaker 2: That would be cool. Just like Forty who I saw.
[17:36] Speaker 1: We saw at the NBA All Star Game in San Francisco,
[17:42] Speaker 1: Yes on Valentine's Day, saw you forty high and guy
[17:45] Speaker 1: fere too shy to say hi to Forty. He was
[17:48] Speaker 1: made a conversation. I was too chickened out, but I
[17:50] Speaker 1: did say hi to Guy Fiery. I said he gave
[17:52] Speaker 1: me tequila out of a plastic very nice. I'm sure
[17:55] Speaker 1: Forty was like a cool ass dude.
[17:59] Speaker 2: For sure, not you, and I couldn't.
[18:01] Speaker 3: I was.
[18:01] Speaker 2: I saw e forty on a flight once and did
[18:04] Speaker 2: say hi. I remember this story. I tell you this.
[18:06] Speaker 2: I actually think I had a story because I'll give
[18:08] Speaker 2: you this. I think I have his cell phone number
[18:10] Speaker 2: because but I remember there was a big scary looking
[18:14] Speaker 2: for me vividly really, and I've told other people this story.
[18:18] Speaker 2: Go ahead.
[18:19] Speaker 4: I was on a Southwest flight and a really scary
[18:21] Speaker 4: looking guy comes on and reserves an entire row on
[18:25] Speaker 4: Southwest and stands there like, no one can sit here.
[18:28] Speaker 4: And one minute before takeoff, E forty ran on the
[18:30] Speaker 4: flight and I was like, that is Southwest first class
[18:33] Speaker 4: right there. You just hire somebody cool to say no,
[18:36] Speaker 4: you can't sit here. And I said hi to him,
[18:38] Speaker 4: and I was like, I did it again. I go forty.
[18:41] Speaker 4: It's like my rock thing. What's wrong with me? Why
[18:43] Speaker 4: I keep doing this? The famous black Man? I said, forty,
[18:47] Speaker 4: I'm a big fan. And he looked at me very skeptically.
[18:50] Speaker 4: He's like mm hm, cause he had just come up
[18:51] Speaker 4: out with tell Me When to Go, which was like
[18:53] Speaker 4: his big hit, and he thought that I was a
[18:56] Speaker 4: fly by night, you know, yeah, And I said no,
[18:59] Speaker 4: I've been listening to since Federal, which was his his
[19:02] Speaker 4: real his first album. Where I remember I was at
[19:04] Speaker 4: the Seneca Center for Severely emotionally Disturbed Youngsters when the hecker, Yeah,
[19:09] Speaker 4: when the head counselor told me about forty, said there's
[19:12] Speaker 4: this new rapper and he wraps off beat. You should
[19:15] Speaker 4: check him out. And then I was thirteen years old
[19:18] Speaker 4: and I said federal. And I saw the look in
[19:20] Speaker 4: his eyes under his like John Lennon glassation, and he
[19:24] Speaker 4: was like for real and he got I think he
[19:26] Speaker 4: got excited that a guy that looked as dorky as
[19:29] Speaker 4: I that was a deep cut yea that year.
[19:32] Speaker 2: And he gave me hisself. I believe it's possible. You
[19:35] Speaker 2: still have a cell and you're gonna give it to us.
[19:36] Speaker 2: Now I can put it on camera.
[19:38] Speaker 5: No, wait, did he give you the right number?
[19:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
[19:44] Speaker 3: With Aridre, with Aerdrey.
[19:56] Speaker 1: Okay, so you've told me this a million times. But
[20:00] Speaker 1: you were hasidic or something and then you did drugs.
[20:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it, you got you got the bullet points,
[20:08] Speaker 2: that's all. Wait when did you start doing drugs?
[20:10] Speaker 5: He was not His dad was or but he was
[20:13] Speaker 5: praised by his mom.
[20:14] Speaker 6: Dad was a part time and the concept spend a
[20:18] Speaker 6: month a year with his dad in like a very
[20:21] Speaker 6: Jewish area, well in the Bay.
[20:24] Speaker 2: My dad, Wait, where are you from.
[20:25] Speaker 4: I'm from Oakland, but I was born in New York
[20:28] Speaker 4: and my dad lived in Seagate in Brooklyn.
[20:30] Speaker 1: And is there's something Whenever white people tell me they're
[20:32] Speaker 1: from Oakland, I don't believe them, even though there are
[20:34] Speaker 1: white people from Oakland.
[20:35] Speaker 6: Remember you, Shawn Lynch and Mosha goes, I'm from Oakland
[20:38] Speaker 6: because Marshaw's I went to Teck.
[20:40] Speaker 2: And Marsha High School. Like Oakland. It's where he went
[20:44] Speaker 2: to high school and I went to high school.
[20:46] Speaker 5: Shawn goes, No, you didn't.
[20:47] Speaker 2: Know you did. What do you mean? Yes, I did,
[20:51] Speaker 2: but it was kind of cool. I kind of liked that.
[20:53] Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm like, whenever I meet white people, you don't
[20:56] Speaker 1: think that they I don't think that they exist there,
[20:58] Speaker 1: but they do and I know they do, but my
[21:00] Speaker 1: brain take it always takes a second.
[21:02] Speaker 2: You know what I do as I go. If you're white,
[21:04] Speaker 2: why'd you grow up there? Yeah? The world's your oyster.
[21:10] Speaker 2: The world was not my oyster. We were super broke.
[21:12] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, my parents are deaf. They're deaf. Yeah, you
[21:16] Speaker 2: didn't know this.
[21:17] Speaker 1: My dad was deaf. What he had scarlet fever? My
[21:21] Speaker 1: dad was born in Haiti in the forties.
[21:23] Speaker 2: Did you give me ship for saying scuttle about your
[21:24] Speaker 2: dad had scarlet fever.
[21:26] Speaker 1: Scarlet fever, and they gave him some drops in his ears.
[21:30] Speaker 1: It didn't do shit, and he lost total hearing in
[21:33] Speaker 1: one ear and like.
[21:34] Speaker 2: Had partial hearing.
[21:35] Speaker 5: Did he ever learn asl American sign?
[21:37] Speaker 1: No, He was so like, I'm not deaf and never
[21:41] Speaker 1: wear a hearing aid until like the end of his life.
[21:44] Speaker 1: He finally they finally made one small enough and in
[21:47] Speaker 1: his skin color that was hidden enough, and he wore
[21:50] Speaker 1: for a while.
[21:51] Speaker 2: Then he could finally hear us.
[21:52] Speaker 1: It was like he was finally chiming into conversations. And
[21:54] Speaker 1: then my sister pointed it out. She's like, oh, Dad, awesome,
[21:57] Speaker 1: you're wearing your hearing aid. And then he took it
[21:59] Speaker 1: out and he never it back in. I'm so like
[22:01] Speaker 1: a shame. It's a shame around it.
[22:03] Speaker 2: My parents were no offense. Your dad really deaf.
[22:07] Speaker 5: Well you grew up in that culture, but they were.
[22:10] Speaker 4: But they were actually deaf, like a hearing aid wouldn't
[22:12] Speaker 4: have helped. But my dad was the same way.
[22:14] Speaker 1: Well, I mean one year was there's different levels for
[22:16] Speaker 1: deftness and blindness.
[22:17] Speaker 2: What I'm not deaf, kidding, he's not. He wasn't asl
[22:21] Speaker 2: or Haitian sl or whatever. I wonder if they what
[22:23] Speaker 2: they use in Haiti. I bet there's no hospitals in Haiti.
[22:26] Speaker 4: I bet you they use ASL and Haiti. That'd be
[22:28] Speaker 4: my guest. My guess is at the US ASL and Haiti.
[22:31] Speaker 3: They don't you.
[22:31] Speaker 2: You're just like on you You're just pointing at stuff.
[22:36] Speaker 2: And I've been there. Those are hearing people and get here.
[22:41] Speaker 3: Wait.
[22:41] Speaker 2: Wait, so what's the story. Your parents were never married.
[22:44] Speaker 4: My parents were married. They were when you were one
[22:47] Speaker 4: for a long time. They divorced when I was nine
[22:49] Speaker 4: months old and my mom left. I have one brother,
[22:53] Speaker 4: one brother. I have a half sister, a half brother
[22:55] Speaker 4: and a step sister.
[22:56] Speaker 2: The brother is a full brother. So you were the
[22:58] Speaker 2: second kid. I was the second and then they called
[23:00] Speaker 2: it quits when once they met me, they were like,
[23:02] Speaker 2: this isn't working. We're out. And I moved to Oakland
[23:06] Speaker 2: from Queen's and when my dad, okay, parents are together.
[23:10] Speaker 2: You're born in Queen's. That's right. They split. You go
[23:12] Speaker 2: with dad to Oakland.
[23:14] Speaker 4: No, my mom mom, My mom tells my dad were
[23:16] Speaker 4: going on on a summer vacation to see my grandma.
[23:18] Speaker 4: We never came back. And I actually have a calendar.
[23:21] Speaker 4: I found a calendar of my dad crossing off B
[23:24] Speaker 4: and the boys come home and then it just stops.
[23:27] Speaker 4: And that's when his Hasidic life began.
[23:29] Speaker 2: He like in the he converted. No, he grew up.
[23:33] Speaker 2: I mean this is so called long hard. Yeah.
[23:36] Speaker 4: My grand his grandparents were like Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn.
[23:40] Speaker 4: My dad, my grandfather was like a Communist Yiddish novelist,
[23:46] Speaker 4: and my grandmother was like a member of the American
[23:48] Speaker 4: Communist Party.
[23:49] Speaker 1: Like my grandparents were Communist Jews.
[23:51] Speaker 2: Sure they knew my bio grandma.
[23:53] Speaker 1: Great grandmother was like an anarchist Jew, but she was
[23:56] Speaker 1: Hasidic at first, left the Hasidim when to London, shaved
[24:01] Speaker 1: your head and became an anarchist in like eighteen eighty eight, sisters.
[24:05] Speaker 2: This is my mom's grandmother.
[24:07] Speaker 1: But my mom's parents were Commie Juice in New York.
[24:12] Speaker 4: In Yeah, I could almost guarantee they knew my grandparents probably.
[24:15] Speaker 4: I mean it was a very that was a very
[24:17] Speaker 4: small world. I could almost guarantee it.
[24:18] Speaker 1: Okay, Then you moved to Oakland with mom. Dad becomes
[24:21] Speaker 1: super Jewish, super mom, and you grew up in Oakland.
[24:25] Speaker 1: But then you do drugs when you're twelve because you
[24:26] Speaker 1: have a bipolar disorder or something.
[24:29] Speaker 2: You got it, man, I mean, there's no need to
[24:30] Speaker 2: interview me.
[24:31] Speaker 3: He doesn't.
[24:32] Speaker 2: No, I don't have no biblear disorder.
[24:34] Speaker 3: No.
[24:34] Speaker 4: I was a twelve year old kid in Oakland, white boy,
[24:37] Speaker 4: trying to be cool, and I found drugs, went to
[24:39] Speaker 4: public school. I went to public school.
[24:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, and but why but there was like a depression.
[24:44] Speaker 1: You were coping with a depression. It wasn't drugs to
[24:46] Speaker 1: like explore consciousness.
[24:49] Speaker 6: Well, how much can you explore consciousness when you're fourteen
[24:51] Speaker 6: doing acid just trying to have fun in art class?
[24:54] Speaker 3: Right?
[24:54] Speaker 2: Or like, I don't know.
[24:56] Speaker 1: You're coming of age and you're you're figuring out your
[25:00] Speaker 1: interview as an adult, and you know, well, the way
[25:03] Speaker 1: that that's true.
[25:04] Speaker 4: The truth is that I was born in uh an
[25:09] Speaker 4: outsider in like five different cultures. I was white in Oakland.
[25:12] Speaker 4: I was hearing in a deaf family. I was a
[25:14] Speaker 4: secular kid in the Hasidic world, and vice versa.
[25:17] Speaker 2: And mom, your mom was not hissiting, No.
[25:20] Speaker 4: Just my mom's fully secular and stole us away from
[25:24] Speaker 4: my dad and raised us like regular kids, public school,
[25:28] Speaker 4: just fully secular life. And I would literally fly back
[25:30] Speaker 4: to New York six weeks a year and kind of
[25:32] Speaker 4: like cosplay as Heavy of the Milkman for.
[25:34] Speaker 2: Six weeks a year. Like it was. It was a Yiddish.
[25:36] Speaker 4: Speaking community in Brooklyn. It wasn't an Orthodox community. It
[25:39] Speaker 4: was an ultra Hasidic community. We used to play dodgeball
[25:42] Speaker 4: between the Hasidic kids and like between the ultra Orthodox
[25:46] Speaker 4: kids that was my team and the actually religious year
[25:49] Speaker 4: you have the oh yeah, I would put them on
[25:51] Speaker 4: at the airport because my dad was.
[25:53] Speaker 1: Oh so you would cosplay yeah as like deeply religious dude,
[25:59] Speaker 1: I just when you were hanging out with dad, yeah
[26:01] Speaker 1: and everything, and the kids.
[26:03] Speaker 5: Would make fun of you for not knowing.
[26:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, so you anywhere anywhere I was.
[26:11] Speaker 6: And that's part of the fascination of Judaism, right, because
[26:14] Speaker 6: you were never accepted into that way.
[26:16] Speaker 2: Do you mean why I like it now? I think so?
[26:19] Speaker 3: Really?
[26:19] Speaker 2: I think I mean I got cousins, dude, for real
[26:22] Speaker 2: that have.
[26:23] Speaker 4: Eastern European accents that are second generation American in Brooklyn,
[26:27] Speaker 4: born in America, and they sound like a doctor Jivago like.
[26:32] Speaker 2: Their parents.
[26:34] Speaker 4: Their parents don't have Eastern European accents because their parents
[26:37] Speaker 4: were immigrants kids, and so immigrants will tell your kids, hey,
[26:41] Speaker 4: don't be immigranty don't don't betray or be American. So
[26:45] Speaker 4: they'd send them to they would sound like Americans. But
[26:48] Speaker 4: then by the time they had kids, they would be
[26:49] Speaker 4: like comfortable, they would be comfortable in the in this country,
[26:53] Speaker 4: and they would send them to only Yidish speaking.
[26:56] Speaker 2: Oh no, no, I can't even read Hebrew. I can't. Yeah,
[26:59] Speaker 2: I mean that was my problem. Yeah, I couldn't even
[27:01] Speaker 2: read Hebrew. Oh yeah, that's big.
[27:03] Speaker 4: And they I would have these are English Yiddish as
[27:06] Speaker 4: a first language speakers, and I can't even read Hebrew.
[27:09] Speaker 4: It was it was a fucking nightmare. And so when
[27:12] Speaker 4: I found drugs just to answer the question, I found
[27:14] Speaker 4: for the first time, not that I fit in, but
[27:17] Speaker 4: that fitting in didn't matter anymore, like all the differences
[27:20] Speaker 4: that I'd ever experienced, like disintegrated, and I.
[27:23] Speaker 2: You when you were twelve thirteen, you're coming of age
[27:25] Speaker 2: and you're depressed. I guess I was depressed.
[27:27] Speaker 4: I was angry. I had oppositional definers, conduct disorders.
[27:31] Speaker 1: Smart and you don't feel like you fit in how
[27:34] Speaker 1: was I was school? Were you good at school?
[27:35] Speaker 2: Oh? No?
[27:36] Speaker 1: So school struggling, eighth grade dropout? So when did you
[27:41] Speaker 1: start doing a ton of drugs?
[27:42] Speaker 2: Twelve? And when did you go to bad kids School? Thirteen?
[27:46] Speaker 2: And when did you stop doing drugs? Fifteen? Almost sixteen?
[27:50] Speaker 1: Okay, so's twelve to sixteen. It's chaos, pure chaos. But
[27:54] Speaker 1: what drugs were you doing?
[27:55] Speaker 4: Just a lot of acid and mushrooms and alcohol and
[27:58] Speaker 4: weed and nothing fun.
[28:00] Speaker 2: I mean, something exciting. Cocain? No, uh uh, meth.
[28:03] Speaker 4: I feel like I always disappoint people and they ask
[28:04] Speaker 4: me this question heron. No, No, it's a little bit
[28:07] Speaker 4: of math, a.
[28:07] Speaker 2: Little bit of math.
[28:08] Speaker 1: But I mean you were self anesthetizing. You weren't exploring consciousness.
[28:12] Speaker 1: It wasn't for sure, It wasn't a good part.
[28:13] Speaker 4: I would take acid and stare at a pylon at
[28:15] Speaker 4: a bart station for eight hours.
[28:16] Speaker 3: You were going through it.
[28:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, you were going through it. But you haven't touched
[28:21] Speaker 2: anything since you were a kid, really, since you were
[28:23] Speaker 2: a teenager? Yeah, since I was FI too long? Did
[28:27] Speaker 2: you do AA and n A? I did a hardcore
[28:29] Speaker 2: for a very.
[28:30] Speaker 5: Long Are you thirty years sober?
[28:31] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[28:32] Speaker 2: Well, I'm forty five. So would you do.
[28:34] Speaker 1: With the support of your sponsor, your therapist, whoever, whatever
[28:38] Speaker 1: support you need, your wife, your kid, blah blah blah.
[28:40] Speaker 1: Would you try in a therapeutic setting, any type of
[28:46] Speaker 1: therapeutic psychedelic I would cry, like the ketamine clinic or
[28:50] Speaker 1: the ayahuasca retrieve.
[28:52] Speaker 2: Now, yeah, I would do coke with you at a bar.
[28:56] Speaker 2: You would shut the fuck just for fun. Okay, let's
[28:59] Speaker 2: do it.
[29:00] Speaker 4: I thought very seriously about doing psychedelics again, and I
[29:05] Speaker 4: was I had decided, right, tosh I.
[29:07] Speaker 1: Because I don't think you are the same person you
[29:09] Speaker 1: were twelve, thirteen, fourteen years old.
[29:12] Speaker 5: I don't need them right now.
[29:14] Speaker 1: The forty five year old Mosha is different than twelve
[29:18] Speaker 1: year old struggling I'm cosplaying as a Hasidic kid.
[29:21] Speaker 2: I'm the white kid.
[29:22] Speaker 6: Okay, but can I just say my experience at Oakland
[29:24] Speaker 6: School of Mosha's personality is when he gets into something,
[29:28] Speaker 6: he gets really into it.
[29:29] Speaker 5: Like when he got into taping. We would have like.
[29:32] Speaker 6: Sixteen different packages of vapes from England and London and
[29:36] Speaker 6: everything color.
[29:37] Speaker 2: I'm just saying, like true, but he gets.
[29:39] Speaker 6: He has a bag of vape that he would travel in.
[29:43] Speaker 2: I don't think that's really true.
[29:44] Speaker 5: But as he puts this in in that he no,
[29:48] Speaker 5: it's your journey.
[29:49] Speaker 2: Hold on, I'm gonna do it ones in a one breaker.
[29:51] Speaker 2: But that's the grand I'm just saying, like, that's.
[29:54] Speaker 4: The grand mind fuck of being sober and getting sober
[29:57] Speaker 4: young in a in a variety based model, which I
[30:02] Speaker 4: think is the best model. Actually, if you're a drug addict,
[30:06] Speaker 4: is to quit completely. But the mind fuck is thirty
[30:09] Speaker 4: years later, it's pretty hard to make a case that
[30:11] Speaker 4: you're not a completely different person. I mean, it's a
[30:13] Speaker 4: little different if you.
[30:14] Speaker 5: Have the addictive quality.
[30:16] Speaker 4: But it's a little But it's it's a mind fuck
[30:18] Speaker 4: because it's not. It's obviously true that I'm a completely
[30:21] Speaker 4: different person in every possible set of criteria. But it's
[30:26] Speaker 4: also true that people who have been profoundly transformed by
[30:29] Speaker 4: sobriety decide to take a psychedelic thirty years later, take it,
[30:34] Speaker 4: and then they start drinking, and then their lives fall
[30:36] Speaker 4: apart and then they're all fucked out. Both things are true,
[30:38] Speaker 4: Like I could be fine, I could be fucked I
[30:41] Speaker 4: really don't know, and there's one way to find out,
[30:42] Speaker 4: and it's a kind of third rail, it's a kind
[30:45] Speaker 4: of it's a it's a parachute jump. And that's the
[30:48] Speaker 4: scary part. And I've thought about it, and it's it's difficult.
[30:51] Speaker 4: It's a difficult decision.
[30:52] Speaker 2: To your daughter's in college and fucking go to the
[30:54] Speaker 2: do DMT would.
[30:56] Speaker 5: That's a great idea. Wait till she's in college.
[30:58] Speaker 1: Okay, the girls, what if she gets a hot run,
[31:03] Speaker 1: you're out.
[31:04] Speaker 6: Oh. Most had a colonoscopy recently and he was on
[31:06] Speaker 6: some kind of drug and it was so fun.
[31:08] Speaker 5: He was just walking through this. I'm like, where's this guy?
[31:12] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[31:12] Speaker 2: They call that free lapse, right, free lapse. That was awesome, man.
[31:16] Speaker 5: But the but it only lasted like fourteen minutes.
[31:19] Speaker 2: It was so fun, so scientific.
[31:21] Speaker 4: I wish I had had a kind of incompetent and
[31:24] Speaker 4: Estheti's aologist, because you know, they tied it so perfectly
[31:30] Speaker 4: that by the time I was in the parking lot,
[31:31] Speaker 4: I was already sobering up. Yeah, like, give me a
[31:33] Speaker 4: little give me twenty minutes, dude, let me enjoy this.
[31:37] Speaker 5: But it wasn't. It was a lightness.
[31:38] Speaker 6: But I think Mosha decided when we were having a
[31:40] Speaker 6: kid and I was pregnant.
[31:42] Speaker 5: No, this isn't really worth it. Well to go experiment.
[31:45] Speaker 2: I was going to do it day you drop her
[31:47] Speaker 2: off a college? Yeah?
[31:49] Speaker 5: Could?
[31:49] Speaker 2: That's all right? Fun because then if he goes off
[31:51] Speaker 2: the d bend, you could just be like, later, dude, you.
[31:54] Speaker 5: Have fun with him or whatever.
[31:56] Speaker 2: Years Well that's so int I mean, if he goes
[31:59] Speaker 2: to like Arowin Downer, I'm no part of me is
[32:01] Speaker 2: worried about that.
[32:02] Speaker 5: I'm worried about him.
[32:03] Speaker 6: My biggest worry about Mosh is him going to a
[32:05] Speaker 6: bar where there's like a mixologist and him wanting to
[32:07] Speaker 6: try every single different sweet.
[32:11] Speaker 5: Cocting, you know, like he'd be like what is gin taste?
[32:14] Speaker 5: Like what is tequilan?
[32:15] Speaker 4: I don't want to drink. I have no I mean,
[32:17] Speaker 4: I have no desire to drink. Just a person that's
[32:20] Speaker 4: been sober around everybody, every one of our peers and friends.
[32:23] Speaker 4: I will tell you that the people on alcohol, I
[32:26] Speaker 4: know that they're annoying. They're the most annoyed of all
[32:28] Speaker 4: the drunks out of all and they the most like,
[32:31] Speaker 4: they don't look healthy, they aren't fun to talk to.
[32:34] Speaker 2: Drunk is whack.
[32:35] Speaker 5: They're like screaming in your face. They suck.
[32:37] Speaker 4: They suck, and they don't notice any social cues except one.
[32:41] Speaker 4: There's one social cue that drunk people notice, which is
[32:43] Speaker 4: you telling them that them being drunk is a little
[32:45] Speaker 4: too much for them. Then they're like, oh, hyper notice,
[32:48] Speaker 4: Like they get really sensitive, like but if you if
[32:51] Speaker 4: you give subtle cues, they won't take it. Coke not fun,
[32:54] Speaker 4: not fun, but orders of magnitude more fun than drinking,
[32:59] Speaker 4: and then it then it becomes the fun drugs. I
[33:01] Speaker 4: love being around people on psychedelics, like couldn't That's my
[33:04] Speaker 4: favorite because they're fun to talk to, They're cool to
[33:06] Speaker 4: be around.
[33:07] Speaker 2: What do you think about California sober? What did you
[33:09] Speaker 2: just start smoking a little grass?
[33:11] Speaker 3: Uh?
[33:11] Speaker 2: You think that's bad too?
[33:12] Speaker 3: Huh?
[33:13] Speaker 2: It's weed? You are?
[33:15] Speaker 4: You would be a great like drug and alcohol counselor.
[33:19] Speaker 2: I think it would be, yeah, because they think it's
[33:21] Speaker 2: too much.
[33:22] Speaker 6: Why would the weed not make Why would he not
[33:24] Speaker 6: have his obsessive nature with the weed, all the swivers,
[33:28] Speaker 6: all the different edibles.
[33:32] Speaker 4: Millionaire dude, I have this memory. Hello, it's so funny.
[33:36] Speaker 4: I haven't thought about this in so many years, but
[33:38] Speaker 4: I have this memory. The first rehab I ever went
[33:40] Speaker 4: to his place called thunder Road in Oakland, which doesn't
[33:43] Speaker 4: exist anymore. I was in this outpatient like like for
[33:46] Speaker 4: first time offenders, like youth youth rehab after school thing,
[33:51] Speaker 4: and this guy was giving a lecture like that. He's
[33:53] Speaker 4: like new drugs, drugs destroy your life, they make you
[33:56] Speaker 4: you'd never be successful. And I remember, I go, what
[33:59] Speaker 4: about Jimmy Hendrix man and he goes, he looks at
[34:02] Speaker 4: me totally sincerely, goes, think about the music he could
[34:05] Speaker 4: have made if he didn't do drugs.
[34:08] Speaker 5: He could have done it for longer.
[34:09] Speaker 2: That's true, he did. He made the wrong argumentment. Guess what.
[34:17] Speaker 1: I went to Willie Nelson's ninetieth birthday show three years ago.
[34:23] Speaker 2: The guy's still.
[34:24] Speaker 1: Touring and doing more drugs than you could ever imagine.
[34:28] Speaker 5: Okay, well let me ask you this. Don't you think
[34:29] Speaker 5: some people's brain chemistry.
[34:31] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[34:32] Speaker 1: Absolutely. I think addiction is actually genetic and it runs
[34:34] Speaker 1: in the family. So if your if your dad, grandpa
[34:36] Speaker 1: had any shit, it's.
[34:38] Speaker 2: Probably not worth it.
[34:38] Speaker 6: And I do think sometimes people can have like one
[34:40] Speaker 6: or two drinks and they just really can't handle alcohol.
[34:42] Speaker 2: I think that too.
[34:44] Speaker 3: I don't.
[34:44] Speaker 1: I also don't think I think there's I think that
[34:46] Speaker 1: alcohol and psychedelics are not equivalent.
[34:49] Speaker 2: I think they work in but.
[34:53] Speaker 5: That's not to me.
[34:54] Speaker 2: But here's the thing. You might not understand it. But
[34:56] Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, I don't loop alcohol in.
[34:59] Speaker 4: With Here's the thing you might not understand. You're one
[35:01] Speaker 4: hundred percent correct that mushrooms, psychedelics, all of that, they're
[35:05] Speaker 4: qualitatively different than alcohol and every other truly.
[35:08] Speaker 2: Addictive, physically addictive.
[35:10] Speaker 4: Drug in that you know, if you kidnapped your grandma
[35:15] Speaker 4: and and you know, chained her in a basement and
[35:18] Speaker 4: made her drink alcohol all day, every day for a year,
[35:21] Speaker 4: she would she wouldn't be able to detox. About medical intervention,
[35:25] Speaker 4: every single person would become addicted to those things. But
[35:29] Speaker 4: the thing about being sober, it's much it's more of
[35:33] Speaker 4: a like psychic thing. It's like you have a I
[35:35] Speaker 4: call it a I think of it as a membrane.
[35:37] Speaker 4: There's like a super thin membrane between sobriety and non sobriety.
[35:43] Speaker 4: Right once you pierce the membrane, you're on the other
[35:45] Speaker 4: side of the membrane. You're no longer you no longer
[35:49] Speaker 4: have the like decades or years of momentum and stricture
[35:56] Speaker 4: between you in the sober world and you in the
[35:59] Speaker 4: non sober world. So it's a lot easier to go
[36:01] Speaker 4: from from mushrooms and ketamine to drinking a cocktail after
[36:08] Speaker 4: dinner to drinking a cocktail every night to becoming an
[36:10] Speaker 4: alcoholic than it is to go from I don't drink
[36:12] Speaker 4: at all. I don't do any drugs. There's like this,
[36:14] Speaker 4: there's a there's a line, like I said, a third rail,
[36:18] Speaker 4: and you have to get past a third rail, and
[36:19] Speaker 4: it's it's scary in that I don't think I am
[36:22] Speaker 4: genetically I don't believe myself anymore to be a genetic alcoholic.
[36:27] Speaker 2: I don't think that. I don't know, but I don't
[36:29] Speaker 2: think that that's true.
[36:30] Speaker 5: You're certainly very lucid from being sober. I like it.
[36:33] Speaker 4: I don't have a bad life that I need to
[36:35] Speaker 4: improve upon. But I do feel disappointment that I never
[36:39] Speaker 4: got to do psychedelics in the way that I could
[36:41] Speaker 4: have done them, because I do think that they're one
[36:43] Speaker 4: of the like gifts of the universe for the human experience,
[36:46] Speaker 4: like childbirth, which you'll never experience.
[36:49] Speaker 5: Like me and I don't really experience it.
[36:50] Speaker 2: They like, I mean having a kid, you want a kid?
[36:55] Speaker 2: I got to be right now, and I'm like, I'm
[36:57] Speaker 2: like looking to get rid of this thing.
[36:59] Speaker 3: After a week with Aridre, with Aridrey.
[37:18] Speaker 6: Since Eric's contractually obligated, I'm sure to talk about bombing.
[37:21] Speaker 5: I have another one.
[37:22] Speaker 2: Give it to me.
[37:23] Speaker 5: Well this isn't really on stage.
[37:24] Speaker 6: But when I first moved to LA, I really really
[37:28] Speaker 6: wanted to get.
[37:28] Speaker 5: A picture on a red carpet. So sad.
[37:32] Speaker 6: Friend was like, okay, I got a hook up, come
[37:36] Speaker 6: dressed up, because I was like, if I can get
[37:37] Speaker 6: a red carpet picture, I was very ambitious.
[37:39] Speaker 5: I was like, I need to get a picture. I
[37:41] Speaker 5: think it's before I even started doing stand up.
[37:43] Speaker 6: Where you from Illinois? So but I no, Rockford, Illinois.
[37:49] Speaker 6: Yeah but it's not a suburb.
[37:50] Speaker 2: But it's not goin Yeah yeah yeah yeah bipolo y bipolo.
[37:55] Speaker 6: So my friend's like, okay, come to I think it
[37:58] Speaker 6: was like where did where did River Phoenix? Guy?
[38:01] Speaker 2: I don't know that the viper room.
[38:03] Speaker 6: It was like the it was like a rock clack.
[38:05] Speaker 6: It was like solo rent to begin with. It was
[38:07] Speaker 6: like literally like a red carpeting and I get on
[38:11] Speaker 6: this carpet to walk like some no name rock show,
[38:15] Speaker 6: and I do my pose because I can't. One guy
[38:18] Speaker 6: out there. As I do my pose, he looks at
[38:22] Speaker 6: me and gives me a finger wag like like, I like,
[38:25] Speaker 6: won't take your picture?
[38:26] Speaker 5: Taking your picture? You know you don't belong to me.
[38:31] Speaker 6: It was so embarrassing and like, I don't know what
[38:34] Speaker 6: my friend was like I thought he would take your picture.
[38:36] Speaker 4: And dude, fast forward, I'm here, No, fast forward, fast
[38:43] Speaker 4: forward twenty years, Fast forward twenty years. I was nominated
[38:46] Speaker 4: for an Emmy and I brought Natasha to the Emmys
[38:52] Speaker 4: and we were walking the red carpet my nomination. Now, listen,
[38:56] Speaker 4: I'm used.
[38:56] Speaker 2: To being at events when Natasha is the is the
[39:00] Speaker 2: I'm merry character.
[39:01] Speaker 3: I'm not.
[39:02] Speaker 2: I'm not upset about that. I love it. I'm proud
[39:05] Speaker 2: of everything she said. But she was just your date.
[39:07] Speaker 2: She's my fucking day. And they were like, get out
[39:10] Speaker 2: of the get out of her way, straight up.
[39:12] Speaker 1: The talk to them, and I get to the she
[39:15] Speaker 1: you didn't, you were like, no, she loved it.
[39:21] Speaker 6: Every and Emmy is communal property.
[39:26] Speaker 4: We get to the end of the of the of
[39:28] Speaker 4: the red carpet and I said to her, go, that's
[39:30] Speaker 4: a little weird, like you know, this is I'm kind
[39:32] Speaker 4: of the one that was nominated. And she goes back
[39:34] Speaker 4: to your credit. She goes back and she goes, okay,
[39:37] Speaker 4: go back, and I walked back.
[39:39] Speaker 2: It is pathetic.
[39:40] Speaker 4: I walked back up the line and it was like
[39:42] Speaker 4: I walked back up the line.
[39:44] Speaker 2: I'm like hey, and the guy goes, we're good.
[39:48] Speaker 6: But I was like no. I was very adamant because
[39:50] Speaker 6: I was like, this is your Emmy. You have to
[39:52] Speaker 6: get a picture. I didn't realize that was happening.
[39:54] Speaker 5: Sorry to my credit.
[39:55] Speaker 6: I was just like going through the line, trying to
[39:57] Speaker 6: get it over with without.
[39:58] Speaker 2: I wasn't there.
[39:59] Speaker 4: But then we want and I walked back with a
[40:05] Speaker 4: fucking Emmy and I looked at the guy and I'm
[40:07] Speaker 4: like like this, he didn't.
[40:08] Speaker 2: He still didn't recognize.
[40:09] Speaker 5: You can bottom feet get upset about that.
[40:17] Speaker 1: To the Righteous Gemstones premiere there like a few weeks ago,
[40:21] Speaker 1: and the same kind of thing, like they did pictures
[40:23] Speaker 1: of me. I was in the fucking show and then
[40:24] Speaker 1: they were like, all right, get out of her way,
[40:26] Speaker 1: and then she did solo pictures. She was what the
[40:28] Speaker 1: young camera she was like, what, there's all these pictures
[40:36] Speaker 1: that were like ship, you.
[40:38] Speaker 6: Know, you'd be good doing like the pissed off look
[40:42] Speaker 6: that just think about.
[40:44] Speaker 2: That's called smising.
[40:46] Speaker 5: No, it's not even smiling.
[40:47] Speaker 2: You're just kind of frowsing your eyes.
[40:52] Speaker 5: Yeah, just kind of look out into the distance like
[40:53] Speaker 5: you're kind of pissed.
[40:55] Speaker 2: I think she was cute with us at that same event.
[40:58] Speaker 5: I have to smile.
[40:59] Speaker 6: It makes me look young, so I'm always like trying
[41:01] Speaker 6: to give my smile.
[41:02] Speaker 4: Well, you're great on camera. I mean, everybody loves you.
[41:05] Speaker 4: They love you. You're you're a blossom.
[41:07] Speaker 2: You're a natural treasure. You're a kid at forty three,
[41:10] Speaker 2: ageless beauty. That's hardcore.
[41:12] Speaker 5: Fifty one. Yeah, she's seven.
[41:14] Speaker 2: Are you fifty one?
[41:15] Speaker 7: Yeah?
[41:16] Speaker 2: You're great.
[41:16] Speaker 5: Thanks. That's why I said I'm fifty one, you know,
[41:18] Speaker 5: to try to get that you know that.
[41:21] Speaker 2: Age really well? Uh, my cousin, Vinnie, what's your name?
[41:25] Speaker 5: Marissa?
[41:27] Speaker 2: Your cousin.
[41:29] Speaker 6: Hey, you know another old hot chick, Another old Italian bag.
[41:34] Speaker 2: I know, I know an Italian bag that looks straight
[41:37] Speaker 2: mas Italian. I am a bag of bricks. It's still
[41:42] Speaker 2: ain't well.
[41:44] Speaker 6: I did do twenty three and me and found out
[41:45] Speaker 6: I was Sardinian. Since we've gone down, Moses, I.
[41:47] Speaker 2: Went to Sardinia recently. It's like Sicily, right, I never
[41:51] Speaker 2: been in Sicily.
[41:52] Speaker 6: Well, Sardinian people are one of the blue zones. So
[41:56] Speaker 6: those are the zones people stay alive the longest, and
[42:00] Speaker 6: and if you study there, it's like they eat beans and.
[42:02] Speaker 5: A walk everywhere, a drink red wine and hang out with.
[42:06] Speaker 6: Their family and that's about it. And I'm like, that's
[42:09] Speaker 6: my that's my goal is to live into.
[42:11] Speaker 4: My user whatever. The opposite thought, is any any other bombs? Well,
[42:16] Speaker 4: I have the other great bomb of my.
[42:18] Speaker 2: The Irish guy is crazy.
[42:20] Speaker 1: It was pretty brutal, you know, you know Doug Pound's
[42:22] Speaker 1: bomb besides your podcast where you amiliated him?
[42:25] Speaker 2: Why didn't humiliate dog? You didn't stick up for him.
[42:28] Speaker 2: I was intimidating. You're his friend, You're right, messed up?
[42:32] Speaker 5: Motion.
[42:32] Speaker 2: I was intimidated? Was Chris Rock? What am I going
[42:34] Speaker 2: to do? Chris intimidating? What am I gonna do?
[42:36] Speaker 3: Hey?
[42:37] Speaker 2: Leave him? Leave DJ Doug Pound alone.
[42:39] Speaker 6: Chris Rock, Okay, I'll tell you something. You know who
[42:41] Speaker 6: else is intimidating? While most of thinks of his last bomb.
[42:43] Speaker 6: I remember once I auditioned for Seinfeld for to be
[42:46] Speaker 6: a co host on some show he was producing, and
[42:48] Speaker 6: they told me before I went in the room, They're like, Okay,
[42:51] Speaker 6: don't do any bits for Seinfeld. It's like a thing.
[42:53] Speaker 6: Everybody's always trying to do bits for him. You know,
[42:55] Speaker 6: just talk to him. He's he's really into people, not
[42:58] Speaker 6: to comedians, not doing bits. Oh yeah, I got you.
[43:00] Speaker 6: The second I saw him, I just started rambling. It
[43:02] Speaker 6: couldn't help it. I literally remembering him getting a backpack
[43:15] Speaker 6: because it seemed weird that he had a backpack and
[43:17] Speaker 6: leaving during my interview.
[43:19] Speaker 5: Because it was with a few people.
[43:21] Speaker 6: It was for like Tom Papa had a had a
[43:24] Speaker 6: TV show he was hosting and he needed a sidekick,
[43:26] Speaker 6: and Jerry was Love's Tom Papa and he was the producer.
[43:29] Speaker 5: I forget what it's called, like the marriage ref maybe
[43:31] Speaker 5: it was something.
[43:32] Speaker 1: Oh so he's just producing. But they were like, don't prod,
[43:35] Speaker 1: don't bit it up with him.
[43:36] Speaker 5: Yah. It was a very small just Tom.
[43:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, Tom and Jerry. You went in there like a
[43:44] Speaker 2: cat instant girl.
[43:49] Speaker 6: No, but people have that, especially like if you're like
[43:52] Speaker 6: a hierarch hierarchical type of person. Especially, I mean, my
[43:55] Speaker 6: values have changed since I moved here, but you know,
[43:57] Speaker 6: I used to be obsessed with becoming successful, and I
[44:00] Speaker 6: was very ambitious. And when you meet someone who is
[44:03] Speaker 6: above you, it comes comes from wanting a career. You know,
[44:08] Speaker 6: when I was little, my parents were divorced very young,
[44:11] Speaker 6: and my dad was abusive to my mom, and I
[44:13] Speaker 6: had no happy place except the theater. And I grew
[44:17] Speaker 6: up as a child actress, and that was, yeah, in
[44:20] Speaker 6: theater in Chicago, and you know, that was kind of
[44:23] Speaker 6: my happy place. And so I think, I mean, if
[44:26] Speaker 6: you're asking where it comes from, this is the very
[44:28] Speaker 6: truncated version, is like, oh, when I'm when I'm in theater,
[44:32] Speaker 6: which translated into comedy, which you know, it's like, this
[44:35] Speaker 6: is where I.
[44:36] Speaker 2: Can tell them the agent story. This is a good bomb.
[44:39] Speaker 2: This is really it's so funny, it's so good.
[44:41] Speaker 5: You don't have to tell them when I was in
[44:44] Speaker 5: New York. So, you know, my whole life, I'm like,
[44:46] Speaker 5: I have to be an actress.
[44:46] Speaker 6: I have to be an actress is my only hope
[44:48] Speaker 6: for anything, you know, and also wanting to like be
[44:51] Speaker 6: surpass your family of being poor, and you know, it's
[44:54] Speaker 6: a way out, and but I, you know, I finally
[44:57] Speaker 6: got close. I lived in New York for five years
[44:59] Speaker 6: and I finally got close to getting an agent. And
[45:01] Speaker 6: I had like a third callback and I had to
[45:03] Speaker 6: do this monologue. And I did this monologue of Darlene
[45:06] Speaker 6: from Balming Gilead, and I had watched Laurie Metcalf do it,
[45:10] Speaker 6: and I kind of was doing an impression of her.
[45:11] Speaker 6: But it was good, and like I ended up crying
[45:15] Speaker 6: in the monologue. And I remember I left the agent
[45:17] Speaker 6: interview and I was like, I can't believe I just
[45:19] Speaker 6: killed that so hard, you know, like and he goes,
[45:21] Speaker 6: he was like that was amazing. Call me at three
[45:23] Speaker 6: o'clock and I'll let you know if we're going to
[45:25] Speaker 6: represent you. And it's really hard to get an agent
[45:27] Speaker 6: in New York. It's just like especially for me when
[45:30] Speaker 6: I was starting out. So anyway, I call him at
[45:32] Speaker 6: three o'clock. I'm going to Hunter College. I'm in the payphones.
[45:34] Speaker 6: You know, this is a long time ago. I put
[45:36] Speaker 6: my quarter in.
[45:37] Speaker 5: And he's like, hey, Natasha.
[45:39] Speaker 6: You know, I was like waiting for the clock to
[45:41] Speaker 6: dig in like a phone bank, and he's like.
[45:44] Speaker 8: Hey Natasha. So I talked about it with all the agents,
[45:47] Speaker 8: and we've come to the conclusion that you're too short
[45:50] Speaker 8: to be an actress. He goes, you know, Holly Hunter
[45:54] Speaker 8: did it, but she's the only one we can even
[45:56] Speaker 8: think of, so I'm sorry. We just don't think you'll
[45:58] Speaker 8: ever become an.
[45:59] Speaker 6: Actress, so it's preposterous.
[46:01] Speaker 5: I broke down physically. I got on my knees. I
[46:05] Speaker 5: was like heaving because this was.
[46:07] Speaker 2: Like my entire you thought that was your big break life.
[46:10] Speaker 2: I mean, it's over. It was over, I know.
[46:13] Speaker 5: I mean I was probably twenty, but like I had
[46:15] Speaker 5: had so many.
[46:16] Speaker 2: It feels more.
[46:17] Speaker 1: It feels worse then because you're too naive. Just realized,
[46:20] Speaker 1: like who the fuck are.
[46:21] Speaker 5: These people say it like that? And like I tell me,
[46:24] Speaker 5: it's impossible, and like.
[46:26] Speaker 4: Like kind of cruel to the kind of casual cruel
[46:28] Speaker 4: to somebody that's that's ruling over a tiny kingdom, you know.
[46:33] Speaker 1: If that he's just a fucking Wackaoho Jones, like all
[46:36] Speaker 1: these wacked who's In the beginning, you think like the power,
[46:40] Speaker 1: these calm and these open my comics. I thought like,
[46:43] Speaker 1: oh god, this guy just yelled at me because he's
[46:44] Speaker 1: a lunatic. Oh fuck, maybe I fucked up. And then
[46:47] Speaker 1: you're like, who the fuck were those people? They were
[46:50] Speaker 1: a bunch of maniacs, it was like.
[46:51] Speaker 6: And they're just feeding off of like trying to whip
[46:53] Speaker 6: their you know, be superior over all.
[46:57] Speaker 2: Oh.
[46:57] Speaker 4: But then you like, she's on her knees crying in
[46:59] Speaker 4: a pay phone in New York thinking it's over, and
[47:01] Speaker 4: what like five years later you found stand up and like.
[47:04] Speaker 5: And then twenty years later, I'm still really trying.
[47:09] Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
[47:10] Speaker 5: No, I'm just saying it never really even the roast.
[47:13] Speaker 6: Like after I did the roast of Justin Bieber, I
[47:15] Speaker 6: was like, this is it?
[47:17] Speaker 5: Yeah, And then like I remember the next.
[47:19] Speaker 6: Day there was this whole like thing where like all
[47:22] Speaker 6: my agents left CIA and went to Uta. There was
[47:25] Speaker 6: like this whole thing that happened, and nothing really happened
[47:28] Speaker 6: from the roast, and I was like I was thinking,
[47:30] Speaker 6: like I'm gonna be in movies like Amy Schumer and
[47:32] Speaker 6: nothing really happened. But then it's like ten years later,
[47:35] Speaker 6: the roasts are viral on TikTok and I sell out
[47:38] Speaker 6: and it's like you just don't know how there was like.
[47:41] Speaker 5: A re yeah, and you know you can't.
[47:44] Speaker 1: The Deftones sold out the Key of Forum and the
[47:47] Speaker 1: Death Tones I grew up listening to, but like they're cool,
[47:50] Speaker 1: like like teenagers listened to that. They had some like
[47:53] Speaker 1: they had like a reth they had like a re
[47:55] Speaker 1: they like work on TikTok for like the new Emo Waves.
[47:59] Speaker 5: Well, my point is you can't. You can never. You
[48:01] Speaker 5: can never like control how something's going to.
[48:05] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[48:05] Speaker 1: Also culture, you never know, like the thing that you
[48:09] Speaker 1: think is some throwaway thing. It's like that with jokes,
[48:11] Speaker 1: Like you think the throwaway joke is like whatever, and
[48:13] Speaker 1: then it gets a big laugh and then like the
[48:15] Speaker 1: thing you're like, dude, I'm the next Richard Prior, and
[48:17] Speaker 1: then you fall flat on your face.
[48:18] Speaker 2: It feels just like, well, there's no, there's no, there's
[48:21] Speaker 2: no it's unpredictable, there's no there.
[48:23] Speaker 4: I always think of it like the whole, this whole thing,
[48:25] Speaker 4: and life is like this in general, but Hollywood certainly
[48:28] Speaker 4: is like this ladder and the problem is you're always
[48:32] Speaker 4: looking at the wrong above you going oh, if that's
[48:34] Speaker 4: the wrong, that will make me whole. And then you
[48:37] Speaker 4: work and you work and you work and you work,
[48:38] Speaker 4: and finally you know you grab the wrung and you
[48:40] Speaker 4: pull yourself up to that wrong And the moment you
[48:42] Speaker 4: get up to the wrong, you look up and you're like, oh, ship,
[48:44] Speaker 4: there's another one right there, and that becomes a thing
[48:46] Speaker 4: and like Brad Brad Pitts somewhere up the ladder. Yeah,
[48:50] Speaker 4: you know, looking at Timothy shallow my shoes, going like
[48:52] Speaker 4: how did I get last?
[48:53] Speaker 2: You know, and that's like, yeah, that's just life. You
[48:58] Speaker 2: never get there the ladder. Yeah, like fashionable, Like those
[49:03] Speaker 2: shoes are cool.
[49:04] Speaker 5: They're like a cool swing like small shoes too.
[49:06] Speaker 2: I was a real man Chinese. It says like there
[49:11] Speaker 2: isn't bad.
[49:13] Speaker 6: Yeah, that's why you should have a children, because I
[49:15] Speaker 6: have children, Because once you have a child, you don't
[49:17] Speaker 6: care about the ladder anymore.
[49:19] Speaker 4: It is true, No, I mean that's saying that is true.
[49:21] Speaker 4: But there's also a caveat to that too. You have
[49:24] Speaker 4: a child, you're on that ladder, you go, you go,
[49:26] Speaker 4: what's my purpose? What's my purpose?
[49:27] Speaker 2: Life? Ladder? Then you have a kid, you go, Okay, yeah,
[49:29] Speaker 2: I know.
[49:29] Speaker 4: My purpose is it's to care for this thing and
[49:31] Speaker 4: teach it to have a good life, and teach it
[49:33] Speaker 4: ethics and values and feed it and protect it, and
[49:36] Speaker 4: you're like, this is the point of my life. But
[49:37] Speaker 4: I think about that. I'm not there yet. I think
[49:39] Speaker 4: about all the time that that. Then they turn eighteen
[49:42] Speaker 4: and you're like, okay, bye, and they do drugs.
[49:45] Speaker 2: Then you die. You do drugs and die. That's good
[49:48] Speaker 2: that it's not too bad. I think of it. It's
[49:50] Speaker 2: not too bad. Yeah, I'm with you on that. And
[49:53] Speaker 2: then I got a dog, you got a cat. That's enough.
[49:55] Speaker 2: It's enough.
[49:57] Speaker 5: Has always like, stop talking people into having children.
[49:59] Speaker 4: It's never were successfully, it's never worked. I mean, people
[50:02] Speaker 4: shouldn't have kids that don't want kids because it's they shouldn't.
[50:04] Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's not.
[50:05] Speaker 5: And you might not get a perfect one like I got.
[50:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we got it pretty go.
[50:08] Speaker 1: I know some I have friends with some dud kids.
[50:11] Speaker 2: Well yeah, we actually do.
[50:12] Speaker 5: They think they're dud in their heart.
[50:14] Speaker 2: I think, yes, really, dude, we are kid.
[50:17] Speaker 1: We just like a guy who's oldest kid, I think
[50:22] Speaker 1: broke him.
[50:24] Speaker 2: I was a adult, but I was a dud. My
[50:26] Speaker 2: mom he was smart. Yeah I was smart.
[50:28] Speaker 4: I guess we just found out our kid just got
[50:30] Speaker 4: diagnosed with something that's gifted.
[50:33] Speaker 5: That's not true.
[50:33] Speaker 2: We just found out.
[50:34] Speaker 5: I have a friend.
[50:35] Speaker 2: Yeah, we just found out. It was really rough because
[50:37] Speaker 2: you had fucking the bowlers.
[50:40] Speaker 6: No, my friend was like, our child's been diagnosed as gifted.
[50:43] Speaker 6: This is a funny idea to say, diagnosed.
[50:45] Speaker 2: Diagnosed, Come on the ship. Our kid's cool.
[50:48] Speaker 4: I'm sure she wouldn't be cool to you, but but
[50:50] Speaker 4: when they're your kid, you're like, oh, this one's awesome.
[50:52] Speaker 4: She's awesome, and she's very aware of that too.
[50:54] Speaker 2: And won and done. Oh yeah, she's fifty one fifty
[50:57] Speaker 2: one one j Jackson.
[50:59] Speaker 6: Those are false hopes. That's not real, Like it's real much.
[51:04] Speaker 5: I would if someone I wouldn't try to adopt.
[51:07] Speaker 6: But if someone was like, oh, if someone, can you
[51:09] Speaker 6: watch this kid for us forever?
[51:11] Speaker 2: Could you watch this kid for us? You would just get.
[51:15] Speaker 5: We were trying to get pregnant.
[51:17] Speaker 6: I wanted so badly for someone to just give me
[51:19] Speaker 6: a kid at the grocery store, Like I just was like,
[51:21] Speaker 6: any kid, like I can kidd'll do.
[51:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, I don't want a kid that broke your
[51:25] Speaker 2: friend and we turn it around. Yeah, oh no, that
[51:28] Speaker 2: would be brutal.
[51:30] Speaker 6: And our daughter's only seven, honey, and you have a
[51:32] Speaker 6: history of issues.
[51:34] Speaker 2: So, oh, you mean she might get sucked up at
[51:35] Speaker 2: some point maybe about.
[51:37] Speaker 1: Our You just see when she turned twelve thirteen comes
[51:41] Speaker 1: a little you.
[51:41] Speaker 2: I think that kind of destiny fulfillment stuff. I don't
[51:44] Speaker 2: buy it. I'm not into it.
[51:46] Speaker 1: Well, you had a very specific, uh tornado of a childhood.
[51:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, she's got my genetics, but she doesn't have my circumstances,
[51:54] Speaker 2: and I think that that that that that makes a
[51:56] Speaker 2: big difference. She's gonna be wild.
[51:57] Speaker 4: I know she's gonna be wild, and I have to
[51:59] Speaker 4: resist that temptation with her of when I see a
[52:01] Speaker 4: little bit of like thing that was like me, of
[52:04] Speaker 4: then superimposing my trauma onto her future. It's like she's
[52:07] Speaker 4: her own person and she's got her own destiny and
[52:10] Speaker 4: I'm not. I'm not setting her destiny. She's not on
[52:12] Speaker 4: my road.
[52:13] Speaker 6: I had Chelsea Handler's book laying out yesterday and it's
[52:15] Speaker 6: like her in a ski outfit with a martini, and
[52:18] Speaker 6: my daughter's like, why is she drinking in a ski outfit?
[52:22] Speaker 5: And she was like really into this cover and then.
[52:24] Speaker 6: Like then like an half hour later, she's like, I'm.
[52:27] Speaker 5: Crazy, I drink alcohol.
[52:29] Speaker 6: Like she was just like saw this image you know, yes,
[52:34] Speaker 6: like well, because she was like that, and I didn't
[52:35] Speaker 6: even think of I just looked at the thing, like, oh,
[52:38] Speaker 6: there's Chelsea, but like I wasn't really thinking, like my
[52:40] Speaker 6: daughter hadn't seen those images together, and she just thought
[52:44] Speaker 6: it was something funny.
[52:46] Speaker 2: Kids are funny.
[52:46] Speaker 4: We had this friend over who's like a bit of
[52:49] Speaker 4: a judgmental, like I do everything correct, mom, Like a
[52:53] Speaker 4: lot of references to the level, the reading level, you know,
[52:56] Speaker 4: like a lot and and just like a lot of
[53:00] Speaker 4: there was a lot of perfect parenting going on. And
[53:01] Speaker 4: the kid came in.
[53:03] Speaker 2: She was outside and the kid came in, this little
[53:05] Speaker 2: like perfect child, and he goes, looks at me, he goes.
[53:08] Speaker 4: I'm a murderer, goes murder, murder, murder, like that murderer.
[53:19] Speaker 4: I'm a soldier, not bang, bang, I'm a murderer.
[53:24] Speaker 6: We showed our daughter last night. Mosha is like obsessed
[53:27] Speaker 6: with the idea that like PG. Thirteen is fine for her.
[53:29] Speaker 6: She's seven, and like he shows her, He's like, no,
[53:32] Speaker 6: she loves it.
[53:33] Speaker 5: She loves it. I'm like, okay, well she is having nightmares.
[53:35] Speaker 5: So finally we show.
[53:37] Speaker 1: Her she loves Jesus James.
[53:39] Speaker 6: We show her Back to the Future last night, the
[53:41] Speaker 6: first one and Pig it's PG.
[53:44] Speaker 5: She's loving it.
[53:45] Speaker 2: And then for Michael J.
[53:47] Speaker 5: Fox, I didnk that part isn't even that.
[53:50] Speaker 2: Directs the mechas cut.
[53:51] Speaker 6: When the Libyans come, there's like Libyans. I don't know
[53:54] Speaker 6: if you remember this, but.
[53:54] Speaker 2: Like very racist. I haven't seen that.
[53:58] Speaker 5: Come to machine gun.
[54:00] Speaker 2: They're speaking like fake, like it's like fake. It's just like.
[54:06] Speaker 5: She is so into this movie and then this part
[54:08] Speaker 5: happens and she just starts balling.
[54:10] Speaker 2: She started crying.
[54:11] Speaker 5: She had never seen like he's dead, he's dead, but
[54:15] Speaker 5: someone pulling.
[54:16] Speaker 6: Out a machine gun in an empty parking lot and
[54:18] Speaker 6: blowing someone up.
[54:19] Speaker 5: And then I go, most you've got to see if
[54:21] Speaker 5: this is this, there's no way this.
[54:22] Speaker 2: She was mad at me.
[54:23] Speaker 4: She was like, that was not a PG movie, and
[54:25] Speaker 4: I looked it up. I knew it was PG. I
[54:28] Speaker 4: looked it up. This is the fact that I found
[54:30] Speaker 4: out when Back to the Future came out, PG thirteen
[54:33] Speaker 4: as a rating was like six months old, so it.
[54:37] Speaker 3: Should have been.
[54:39] Speaker 2: They just invented PG thirty.
[54:41] Speaker 6: Curists like, I mean, she was bawling and I'm just like,
[54:44] Speaker 6: I've never seen her balld Or.
[54:45] Speaker 2: She's funny though. She the other showed her Planet of
[54:48] Speaker 2: the Ape. I don't care. I mean, what are you
[54:50] Speaker 2: gonna do?
[54:50] Speaker 6: I watched fund show her something that's gonna keep her
[54:53] Speaker 6: up at night.
[54:53] Speaker 5: Look, Eric can't even sleep at night.
[54:55] Speaker 4: I watched R rated movies when I was a little kid,
[54:57] Speaker 4: and I turned out, fine, you were crazy.
[54:59] Speaker 2: That's right. I to rehabit twelve. Anyway, she's funny though.
[55:02] Speaker 4: I watched Planet of the Apes with her the other
[55:04] Speaker 4: day when Natasa's out of town, and the last line
[55:07] Speaker 4: of Planet of the Apes spoiler alert is that he
[55:10] Speaker 4: pulls James franco In and he's.
[55:11] Speaker 2: Like, oh, new Planet of the Apes. New Planet of
[55:13] Speaker 2: the Apes. He pulls James franco In and he's like,
[55:15] Speaker 2: the monkey goes Caesar is home.
[55:17] Speaker 4: That's the last line. She really loved that, and she
[55:20] Speaker 4: pulled me in the other day. We're at a restaurant
[55:21] Speaker 4: and we were eating Caesar salad and she grabbed my
[55:23] Speaker 4: head and she pulled me and she goes, Caesar.
[55:25] Speaker 2: Salad is home. That's funny. That's a good joke. That's
[55:28] Speaker 2: a good joke.
[55:29] Speaker 3: That's a good joke.
[55:32] Speaker 1: There you go, and there's a thing with Jews and Italians.
[55:35] Speaker 2: They merged along the way. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Caesar Caesar salad.
[55:40] Speaker 2: Is that what made you do that? No?
[55:41] Speaker 1: I just think Comedians, Jews, Italians, New York, Chicago, San Francisco.
[55:47] Speaker 1: You're from like comedic town. She's got all that in her. Yeah,
[55:50] Speaker 1: she likes we were got all that juice center.
[55:53] Speaker 4: Oh, speaking of bombing, we you know, we raise our
[55:55] Speaker 4: kid with a lot of sarcasm. Obviously, that's the way
[55:58] Speaker 4: we communicate. We were at a friend's house, a soft
[56:01] Speaker 4: hippie friend's house, and the that we ordered pizza for
[56:04] Speaker 4: the family. And the pizza came and the little boys
[56:06] Speaker 4: like pizza, and Natasha goes, actually it's all for us,
[56:10] Speaker 4: and the kids starts fucking sobbing, and I'm like.
[56:13] Speaker 6: Oh, I'm not as an actual adult getting your head
[56:19] Speaker 6: blown off by a machine gun and a parking lot
[56:22] Speaker 6: of like a nice mom.
[56:24] Speaker 4: It was an example of a kid that wasn't being
[56:26] Speaker 4: raised with sarcasm as the primary communicative form. Our kid
[56:29] Speaker 4: was like, now shut up, mom, give me the pizza.
[56:31] Speaker 4: And this little innocent child.
[56:32] Speaker 1: He was like, yeah, any other bums. Your bomb story
[56:36] Speaker 1: was like three seconds You're like, I.
[56:38] Speaker 2: Want to do a show. This guy wrap it up.
[56:41] Speaker 6: The agent told me, I got the agent no, and
[56:44] Speaker 6: then they switched me with the opener that that's happened
[56:47] Speaker 6: to me twice.
[56:48] Speaker 5: That happened to me in Vegas too. And here's the thing.
[56:50] Speaker 6: The guy who they switched me with in Vegas, he
[56:52] Speaker 6: was literally doing Bill Hicks material.
[56:58] Speaker 5: Do you see him do it?
[56:59] Speaker 3: No?
[56:59] Speaker 2: What do you mean? Wasn't there that works?
[57:01] Speaker 3: Though?
[57:02] Speaker 4: I heard about this Italian comedian who he was the
[57:05] Speaker 4: biggest comedian in Italy every year he who put out
[57:08] Speaker 4: this like searing, amazing hour of social commentary. And then
[57:12] Speaker 4: the Internet hit and they started to see comedians on
[57:16] Speaker 4: YouTube and all of a sudden they were like, wait,
[57:18] Speaker 4: this dude just does George Carlin. And like before the Internet,
[57:22] Speaker 4: it was like a perfect creep. Nobody would know, all right, yeah,
[57:26] Speaker 4: we do gotta go. But okay, here's my other big bomb.
[57:29] Speaker 4: This is really where my career changed. Was I was
[57:32] Speaker 4: young in my career. I was about maybe five or
[57:35] Speaker 4: six years in and I got into laugha Palooza, the
[57:38] Speaker 4: Urban Jamie Fox's Urban Comedy Festival, and I was like,
[57:43] Speaker 4: I still remember the phone call, Mosha cash Er, this
[57:46] Speaker 4: is John Johnson from Laugh of Palooza. We'd like to
[57:49] Speaker 4: welcome you to new Faces laugh of Palooza. And I
[57:51] Speaker 4: was jumping up and down at my job. I was like,
[57:55] Speaker 4: this is it.
[57:55] Speaker 2: And I flew to.
[57:57] Speaker 4: Atlanta on my own dime red flag and travel. No
[58:02] Speaker 4: I meet all the other comedians. There's me and one
[58:04] Speaker 4: other white comic everybody else. It doesn't even occur to me.
[58:06] Speaker 4: They were not in the era where it's like inappropriate
[58:08] Speaker 4: for a white comedian to try.
[58:09] Speaker 2: To squeeze into a black comedy festival. It's just like,
[58:12] Speaker 2: let me make it.
[58:13] Speaker 4: There's one other comedian called weed Man, and he would
[58:16] Speaker 4: put on the other white the diversity, the DEI, we
[58:20] Speaker 4: were DEI, and he put he would put one hundred
[58:22] Speaker 4: dollars bill on his head and he would do Ben
[58:24] Speaker 4: Franklin's weed jokes.
[58:25] Speaker 2: That's kind of cool. Well, I was like, weed Man's
[58:28] Speaker 2: not a threat. That was my thought. I'm in You're like,
[58:31] Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
[58:32] Speaker 4: I go to the first show they did. They failed
[58:35] Speaker 4: to promote. There was no one there. It was like
[58:38] Speaker 4: they would like turn off the braves game and start
[58:41] Speaker 4: the show. So nobody there. But there were executives from
[58:44] Speaker 4: Comedy Central and just for laughs there to watch us
[58:48] Speaker 4: just eat fucking garbage for show after show after show,
[58:52] Speaker 4: and then they would let us go to the like
[58:54] Speaker 4: main tapings, which were hilarious. The main tapings were they
[58:57] Speaker 4: build it as a Cedric the Entertainer Show, but it
[58:59] Speaker 4: was actually Edric doing five minutes, and then they would
[59:02] Speaker 4: start a TV taping with a bunch of comics hadn't
[59:04] Speaker 4: heard of, right, and so that the crowds. The crowds
[59:06] Speaker 4: had paid forty dollars Cedric, but they were getting people.
[59:09] Speaker 2: They never gone.
[59:10] Speaker 4: They were mutinous. Bill Burr was on one of those tapings.
[59:15] Speaker 4: Ali Wong was on one of those tapings, and so
[59:17] Speaker 4: we would get to go see what comedy in front
[59:19] Speaker 4: of a crowd would look like, and and it was.
[59:23] Speaker 4: It was so funny. There was a lot, a lot
[59:25] Speaker 4: of funny things happened. But I heard that there was
[59:29] Speaker 4: a Best of the New Faces show happening at the punchline,
[59:32] Speaker 4: and I walked up to John Johnson and I just
[59:36] Speaker 4: I don't know what got into me because I wasn't
[59:37] Speaker 4: like this, but I go, I'm getting on that fucking show.
[59:40] Speaker 4: I go, John, I'm getting on the Best of the
[59:43] Speaker 4: New Faces show, And he's like, he looks at me,
[59:46] Speaker 4: smiles and goes, all right, you're on.
[59:49] Speaker 2: So I show up. The show's at midnight. It's after
[59:51] Speaker 2: the taping.
[59:52] Speaker 4: It starts at midnight, and I walk up to the
[59:54] Speaker 4: booker at the Punchline and I go, I'm on the
[59:57] Speaker 4: New Faces show and she goes, I don't have you down,
[59:59] Speaker 4: and I I looked at her again, and I remember
[1:00:01] Speaker 4: I had a VHS tape in my back pocket, and
[1:00:04] Speaker 4: I go, if nothing else, I'm gonna get a booking
[1:00:06] Speaker 4: at the Punchline Atlanta out of this. And I said,
[1:00:09] Speaker 4: ma'am they John Johnson said I was on this show.
[1:00:12] Speaker 4: I'm on this show. And she's like, I'll put you
[1:00:14] Speaker 4: on last, and I go all right. So the show
[1:00:17] Speaker 4: starts at midnight. There's a real crowd there. People are
[1:00:19] Speaker 4: doing well. People go it's getting later. It's one, it's
[1:00:23] Speaker 4: two in the morning. Weed Man goes on, he fucking
[1:00:26] Speaker 4: the Annihilates dude, and I'm like, I'm in the wings.
[1:00:29] Speaker 4: I'm fucking you know, shadow boxing, and shit, I'm like,
[1:00:32] Speaker 4: I'm doing it.
[1:00:32] Speaker 2: I'm doing it. And then I get on we needed
[1:00:35] Speaker 2: to have kids.
[1:00:35] Speaker 1: We were.
[1:00:37] Speaker 4: Two point fifteen in the morning. I get on and
[1:00:39] Speaker 4: I go, you guys tired as one? The crowd like, yes, yes,
[1:00:44] Speaker 4: I bombed so hard I could. It was like visceral,
[1:00:50] Speaker 4: like in my body I did. I walked off stage.
[1:00:53] Speaker 4: I looked at the booker, I go, not worth the
[1:00:55] Speaker 4: cost of a VHS tape to give her, and I
[1:00:58] Speaker 4: get on the plane.
[1:00:59] Speaker 2: I fly home.
[1:01:00] Speaker 4: My body's like I'm coursing with like I thought this
[1:01:03] Speaker 4: was it, and it was. It was not just not it,
[1:01:06] Speaker 4: it was the opposite of it. People formed lasting impressions
[1:01:09] Speaker 4: of me that would that would follow me into my career.
[1:01:11] Speaker 3: True.
[1:01:12] Speaker 4: I asked her years later, Joanne from Comedy Central now Netflix.
[1:01:15] Speaker 4: I was like, did you see me? She's like, yeah,
[1:01:17] Speaker 4: I thought you sucked. So I get to my club,
[1:01:21] Speaker 4: my home club that night. It's the Sunday after the
[1:01:24] Speaker 4: Sunday before Halloween, and in my apartment, all I want
[1:01:28] Speaker 4: to do is like hide under the covers. And at
[1:01:30] Speaker 4: the punchline San Francisco, the Little Confusing, they're both named
[1:01:33] Speaker 4: the same thing. Also, the booker was named Molly. In
[1:01:35] Speaker 4: the punchline. In the Atlanta you had to wear a
[1:01:37] Speaker 4: costume in order to perform, and I'm like, all I
[1:01:40] Speaker 4: want to do is stay home, quit comedy. I want out.
[1:01:43] Speaker 4: And I'm staring at this like incandescent lycra astronaut suit
[1:01:47] Speaker 4: that I have.
[1:01:48] Speaker 2: Going going is am I going to do it? Am
[1:01:50] Speaker 2: I gonna?
[1:01:50] Speaker 3: Am?
[1:01:50] Speaker 4: I gonna put that fucking thing on? And the ask
[1:01:52] Speaker 4: the plush astronaut helmet I have and drive to the
[1:01:55] Speaker 4: punchline and I'm like, fuck it, like with great dignity,
[1:01:58] Speaker 4: I pulled the span next suit on. I get in
[1:02:00] Speaker 4: my car, I drive across the bridge. You had to
[1:02:04] Speaker 4: wear a costume because it was on the Sunday before
[1:02:07] Speaker 4: Halloween in order to perform, and so I put this
[1:02:10] Speaker 4: fucking ridiculous costume on. I drive to the punchline. I
[1:02:13] Speaker 4: got up and I swear to god, I unlocked something
[1:02:16] Speaker 4: in my performative style that night where I just like
[1:02:19] Speaker 4: gave up, like I was like yeah, and I shifted
[1:02:23] Speaker 4: in this profound way. I killed at the punchline in
[1:02:26] Speaker 4: San Francisco, and I was at that point the comedian
[1:02:30] Speaker 4: that I am now, not.
[1:02:30] Speaker 2: The comedian that was like trying to figure out what
[1:02:33] Speaker 2: who I was.
[1:02:34] Speaker 4: That night that bomb, all those bombs put together like
[1:02:36] Speaker 4: created who I am. Yeah, And so that's why, like
[1:02:39] Speaker 4: my biggest flow, and then my career happened after that.
[1:02:42] Speaker 4: Our bombs creat us comedy is not about my biggest
[1:02:46] Speaker 4: philosophy in comedy is and all and life is. It's
[1:02:48] Speaker 4: not about whether you can succeed. It's about whether you
[1:02:51] Speaker 4: can fail and keep going. And that's what I did.
[1:02:53] Speaker 5: What do you do with them?
[1:02:54] Speaker 2: What do you do with failure? Is the greatest teacher.
[1:02:57] Speaker 2: Failure and success are the same thing. Yeah, yeah, two
[1:03:02] Speaker 2: sides of the same coin. That's been our show. Thank
