[0:03] Speaker 1: With a recdres.
[0:07] Speaker 2: I'm lucky because, like I always was so fucking into
[0:11] Speaker 2: what I did. I didn't even know you could make
[0:13] Speaker 2: money for music when I first started. It was just
[0:14] Speaker 2: like a pipe dream. And then I started making money,
[0:17] Speaker 2: and then I'm like, oh my god, Like I made
[0:20] Speaker 2: five thousand dollars, I don't ever have to work again,
[0:22] Speaker 2: like because you don't know anything. Like It's like it's
[0:24] Speaker 2: like I didn't grow up with like millions of dollars.
[0:25] Speaker 3: So I made like four thousand bucks one time doing
[0:28] Speaker 3: a commercial and I went to Fulton Street mall and
[0:30] Speaker 3: bought gold teeth.
[0:32] Speaker 4: Yeah, and my friend goes, dude, what are you doing, dude?
[0:35] Speaker 4: I was like, I made four.
[0:36] Speaker 2: Grand, dude, I made. I made six thousand dollars. I
[0:40] Speaker 2: bought a bracelet, a diamond bracelet for for eighteen hundred dollars.
[0:45] Speaker 4: Okay.
[0:46] Speaker 2: I went back to my hometown in Virginia and we
[0:48] Speaker 2: used to do this thing where when it was cold,
[0:51] Speaker 2: you would like go on the ice and you would
[0:54] Speaker 2: try to like slide on the ice as far as
[0:57] Speaker 2: you could. And I fell through the ice. I felt
[1:00] Speaker 2: my hands fell through the ice. Literally, bracelet gone in
[1:03] Speaker 2: the first second, like and I was like, I'm never
[1:06] Speaker 2: doing this again. Yeah, but it's like I don't know.
[1:09] Speaker 2: So for me, I'm always doing it. It's like I
[1:11] Speaker 2: started so young that I always was doing it for
[1:15] Speaker 2: fun and then I started making Like.
[1:18] Speaker 3: You were like a boy genius. You were like a
[1:20] Speaker 3: musical genie. You're like the Doogie House of music. Really,
[1:23] Speaker 3: the story you told me when at New Year's about
[1:25] Speaker 3: like you were like you were like downloading different hacked
[1:28] Speaker 3: programs and free figuring them out to bullet boards. Not
[1:32] Speaker 3: at your level, dude, you are like a fucking wiz.
[1:36] Speaker 1: I was just upset. I'm like, I'm very obsessive with stuff.
[1:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, you're jew So I'm like like I just get
[1:42] Speaker 2: so obsessed and I'm like I gotta do it, like
[1:44] Speaker 2: I have to do it.
[1:45] Speaker 3: But you come up very casually. When you told me
[1:47] Speaker 3: that story, I realized your creative prowess.
[1:50] Speaker 4: I was like, oh, yeah, Benny's like successful for a reason,
[1:55] Speaker 4: a reason like the fact that you were doing that reason.
[1:59] Speaker 3: No, really that you were doing that. So for the audience,
[2:03] Speaker 3: can I tell a little bit? Can I shouldn't be
[2:05] Speaker 3: paraphrase you', I'll give like the cliff notes, But like
[2:07] Speaker 3: when you were like you have no twelve or thirteen.
[2:10] Speaker 4: No, I remember vividly when you were like thirteen. Weren't
[2:12] Speaker 4: you downloading like.
[2:13] Speaker 3: Fruit loops and all those early program logic and acid
[2:17] Speaker 3: and all those early programs and teaching yourself how to
[2:20] Speaker 3: manipulate each one.
[2:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, I was. I was doing that.
[2:23] Speaker 2: And I would get like, and you were going to
[2:25] Speaker 2: like beat competitions I didn't even know was a thing.
[2:28] Speaker 2: And I would get like key generators to like hack
[2:31] Speaker 2: like the the program so I could it could like
[2:34] Speaker 2: start up and think that I paid for it.
[2:36] Speaker 1: And yeah, like like like like.
[2:40] Speaker 4: You have like a you have like a knack to adapt.
[2:44] Speaker 4: You're intelligent.
[2:45] Speaker 2: So that computer took the biggest beating of any life.
[2:49] Speaker 2: The only thing I want to hear those first gen
[2:52] Speaker 2: It's terrible, the but the only thing I did on
[2:55] Speaker 2: that computer was like nerdy shit and beat off all
[2:59] Speaker 2: day like it was like it was and I had
[3:02] Speaker 2: like this window before my mom would get home from work,
[3:04] Speaker 2: so I would actually run.
[3:06] Speaker 1: I would run home.
[3:08] Speaker 2: I would run as fast as I can, and I
[3:10] Speaker 2: would get home and I'd have like just only a
[3:14] Speaker 2: few hours. So I had to like balance it between
[3:18] Speaker 2: beating off and making beats, and I was like and
[3:21] Speaker 2: and this was like back when like the pieces were
[3:23] Speaker 2: like so bad.
[3:24] Speaker 1: First of all, they sounded like they were.
[3:25] Speaker 5: Like yeah, it was insane, and there was it was
[3:30] Speaker 5: right when like pop ups started and do you remember,
[3:32] Speaker 5: like do you remember like the pop ups and the
[3:35] Speaker 5: little like viruses that would like make your like search
[3:38] Speaker 5: bar disappear, like my search bar was gone, and like
[3:41] Speaker 5: if you turn on my computer, which just like just
[3:45] Speaker 5: pop us. And used to have to call a man
[3:48] Speaker 5: and and and the man would come over with like
[3:50] Speaker 5: a briefcase and like to fix your computer.
[3:53] Speaker 4: And every time.
[3:55] Speaker 2: He came over, hed be like it's so much born
[3:59] Speaker 2: like and I'd be like, mom, all to take care
[4:00] Speaker 2: of the guy. So so like that was I was
[4:02] Speaker 2: just like beating off and making beats on the family computer.
[4:07] Speaker 2: He was like constantly. I was just like ass naked,
[4:09] Speaker 2: just like it was crazy.
[4:11] Speaker 4: But how did you know to go to beat competitions?
[4:14] Speaker 2: It evolved like I used to go to My brother
[4:18] Speaker 2: used to take me to this like tape and record
[4:20] Speaker 2: store every day. We would go like every day when
[4:23] Speaker 2: I was like five years old. Yeah, yeah, my brother
[4:26] Speaker 2: was so into music. My mom my family was so
[4:29] Speaker 2: into music, and I had very good taste, so I'm
[4:31] Speaker 2: like I got to go all the time, and I
[4:33] Speaker 2: would like save up all my money to buy like
[4:36] Speaker 2: like the like just like singles, and I would just
[4:39] Speaker 2: listen to them all day. And then when Sam Goodie,
[4:41] Speaker 2: you remember the store Sam Goodie, when that came out,
[4:44] Speaker 2: I used to go and I would just be at
[4:46] Speaker 2: that free thing and I would just sit there all
[4:48] Speaker 2: day with the headphones on and just play every CD.
[4:50] Speaker 2: And I used to I'm such a loser. I used
[4:53] Speaker 2: to open the liner notes and cover up who produced
[4:56] Speaker 2: it and try to guess who produced the staff.
[5:00] Speaker 4: I want to get anywhere. This is what I did.
[5:02] Speaker 3: I would make. I had like a rollin eight track
[5:05] Speaker 3: digital eight track with a CD burner, and I would
[5:08] Speaker 3: my friend who actually made good beats on fruit loops.
[5:10] Speaker 4: I would do my shitty raps all over it.
[5:13] Speaker 3: And then like I got a deaf juck CD and
[5:16] Speaker 3: I was like, I'm gonna take the fung wab bus
[5:18] Speaker 3: from Boston and New York and I'm gonna hand this
[5:21] Speaker 3: to LP and he's gonna sign me. And I had
[5:24] Speaker 3: my lyrics printed out like Microsoft word. I remember I
[5:29] Speaker 3: saw I went to Sunny purchase and Prince Paul played
[5:32] Speaker 3: and I gave him a burnt CD with my lyrics
[5:35] Speaker 3: printed out, and he looked at it. He's like, what
[5:37] Speaker 3: is this. I was like, I printed out my lyrics.
[5:38] Speaker 3: He's like, just give me the CD. Like I didn't
[5:43] Speaker 3: have a knack like you. It's not enough to have
[5:45] Speaker 3: a knack to have like good musical taste.
[5:47] Speaker 4: You had a.
[5:48] Speaker 3: Knack for navigating the ever changing music industry, which is
[5:54] Speaker 3: his own skill set. You have, like to have that
[5:57] Speaker 3: level of musical prowess and on top of it, have
[6:02] Speaker 3: such a good You're so good at navigating that industry.
[6:06] Speaker 3: The industry always baffled my mind. And just like knowing
[6:08] Speaker 3: what people wanted, I was too neuro divers lyrics printed
[6:14] Speaker 3: all my lyrics printed out, But like my music.
[6:16] Speaker 4: Was not for dude, I didn't more than like one
[6:19] Speaker 4: hundred people.
[6:20] Speaker 2: I didn't know anything. I used to just I used
[6:22] Speaker 2: to literally go to studios and I would sit outside
[6:25] Speaker 2: of the studio.
[6:26] Speaker 1: And if anyone came out, I'd be like, do you
[6:28] Speaker 1: make music? Because they didn't. You didn't know.
[6:30] Speaker 2: There was no Instagram or anything, so I'd like, do
[6:32] Speaker 2: you do you do stuff? And like I would sit
[6:35] Speaker 2: there and I used to like the way I recorded
[6:39] Speaker 2: was I had two boomboxes and I would record it
[6:41] Speaker 2: to one.
[6:42] Speaker 3: The first tape I made it was my Grandma's VCR
[6:45] Speaker 3: and my mom's VCR and I would.
[6:48] Speaker 4: Record play Yeah.
[6:50] Speaker 3: Yeah, but you had a knack that maybe maybe it
[6:53] Speaker 3: is your brother was the secret ingredient of that. You
[6:55] Speaker 3: had some he was like your soundboard, You're like, is
[6:57] Speaker 3: this a bad idea? Was in the beginning where You're like,
[7:00] Speaker 3: is this dumb?
[7:00] Speaker 5: Is this it?
[7:01] Speaker 3: That idea?
[7:01] Speaker 1: I used to just shooting in the dark.
[7:03] Speaker 2: I used to cold call record later and I would
[7:06] Speaker 2: pretend I was like, so if it was like Atlantic
[7:09] Speaker 2: at the time or Deaf Jim, I would like pretend
[7:11] Speaker 2: I was jay Z's lawyer, and I'd be like, I
[7:13] Speaker 2: would look up brilliant and I'd be like, we need
[7:15] Speaker 2: to speak immediately. And then like when I got to
[7:17] Speaker 2: like the president of the company, I'd.
[7:19] Speaker 1: Be like, don't hang up. I got a demo table.
[7:22] Speaker 2: And honestly, I actually became friends with all the assistants
[7:28] Speaker 2: at the time, and like, I mean one of those
[7:30] Speaker 2: assistants is my manager.
[7:32] Speaker 4: To this day. Yeah, it's crazy, it's brilliant.
[7:35] Speaker 1: I'm how brilliant. It's just brilliant because it worked out.
[7:39] Speaker 1: If it didn't work out, Yeah, just a moron
[7:46] Speaker 4: With Adre
