[0:01] Speaker 1: The old prophet answered, I too am a prophet, as
[0:04] Speaker 1: you are. And an angel said to me by the
[0:07] Speaker 1: word of the Lord, bring him back with you to
[0:11] Speaker 1: your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.
[0:16] Speaker 1: But he was lying to him. So the man of
[0:19] Speaker 1: God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.

[1:32] Speaker 3: The man of God and the old prophet. In the
[1:36] Speaker 3: last story, we learned about how Jeroboam made golden calves
[1:40] Speaker 3: for people to worship and appointed any one priest. Also,
[1:45] Speaker 3: a man of God cried out against the altar of Jeroboam.
[1:50] Speaker 3: In this story, we learn about the fate of the
[1:53] Speaker 3: holy man from Judah who healed Jeroboam's arm, as inspired
[1:59] Speaker 3: by 1 Kings.
[2:03] Speaker 1: Hi again, this is Joya Sabler, and I'm happy you're
[2:06] Speaker 1: here for the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. In
[2:10] Speaker 1: today's story, the man of God is going to listen
[2:13] Speaker 1: to a voice that sounds a little like God's, but
[2:17] Speaker 1: the problem is, it's not. Let's see how he got
[2:21] Speaker 1: there and what a lion and a donkey have to
[2:25] Speaker 1: do with it.
[2:29] Speaker 3: An old prophet lived in Bethel. His sons told him
[2:33] Speaker 3: about what happened when the man of God came from Judah.
[2:36] Speaker 3: Their father was curious, so he asked, Which way.
[2:40] Speaker 2: Did he go?
[2:42] Speaker 3: His sons showed him the way the man of God
[2:44] Speaker 3: had taken and went to saddle the old prophet's donkey.
[2:48] Speaker 3: The old prophet found the man of God laying under
[2:51] Speaker 3: an oak tree. He invited the man of God to
[2:54] Speaker 3: his home to eat, but the man of God responded saying,
[2:57] Speaker 3: I can't go with you. The Lord told me not
[3:00] Speaker 3: to eat bread or drink water here. The old prophet replied,
[3:05] Speaker 3: I'm a prophet too. And he lied and said, An
[3:09] Speaker 3: angel of the Lord sent me to find you so
[3:11] Speaker 3: that I could feed you and give you something to drink.
[3:14] Speaker 3: The man of God believed him and went with him
[3:17] Speaker 3: to his house for a meal. While they were still eating,
[3:22] Speaker 3: the Lord spoke to the man of God through the
[3:24] Speaker 3: old prophet, saying, You have disobeyed the word of God
[3:29] Speaker 3: I told you not to eat or drink here, but
[3:32] Speaker 3: you did not keep my command. Because you did not obey,
[3:36] Speaker 3: you will die, and you won't be buried in your
[3:39] Speaker 3: family's tomb. When they finished eating and drinking, a man
[3:43] Speaker 3: of God's went on his way. While he was traveling,
[3:48] Speaker 3: a lion met him on the road and killed him.
[3:51] Speaker 3: His body lied on the road with both his donkey
[3:55] Speaker 3: and the lion standing beside it. People passed by, seeing
[3:59] Speaker 3: the body lying there and told people in town about
[4:02] Speaker 3: what they had seen. When the old prophet heard about this,
[4:06] Speaker 3: he knew it must be the man of God from Judah.
[4:09] Speaker 3: Once again, the old prophet's sons saddled his donkey and
[4:13] Speaker 3: he went out to find the body. When the old
[4:16] Speaker 3: prophet got there, the donkey and the lion were still
[4:20] Speaker 3: standing next to the body. The lion had not eaten
[4:23] Speaker 3: the dead body or even attacked the donkey. The old
[4:27] Speaker 3: prophet brought the body back home on the donkey to
[4:31] Speaker 3: bury it in his tomb. After burying the man of God,
[4:35] Speaker 3: the old prophet said to his sons, When I die,
[4:39] Speaker 3: bury me in the same tomb where the man of
[4:42] Speaker 3: God is buried. His message against the altar in Bethel
[4:46] Speaker 3: and all of Israel's idols will come true.
[4:56] Speaker 1: Well, that was kind of a bummer. The man of
[4:59] Speaker 1: God had been so strong and determined to obey God.
[5:03] Speaker 3: So what happened?
[5:06] Speaker 1: We open with an old prophet in Bethel feeling curious
[5:10] Speaker 1: about this man of God. He found him under an
[5:15] Speaker 1: oak tree and invited him to eat. But then something
[5:19] Speaker 1: else happened that's very important to notice because it's something
[5:23] Speaker 1: that could happen to you as you get older. The
[5:26] Speaker 1: man of God began listening to someone else's voice other
[5:30] Speaker 1: than God's. And the reason we know it was the
[5:33] Speaker 1: wrong voice is because he was telling the man of
[5:36] Speaker 1: God the opposite of what God had already said. So
[5:42] Speaker 1: how do we know what voices we should listen to?
[5:46] Speaker 1: For one, God has told us many things through his word.
[5:51] Speaker 1: And that's why it is so important that we read
[5:54] Speaker 1: the Bible and know what it says. God's word lasts forever.
[6:00] Speaker 1: It never changes. So you can trust everything that's in it.
[6:05] Speaker 1: But sometimes people will come along and tell you something
[6:09] Speaker 1: that sounds like what God might say. But like the
[6:13] Speaker 1: old prophet, it's a lie. Paul warns us about this.
[6:18] Speaker 1: in second timothy 4 3 when he says for the
[6:22] Speaker 1: time will come when people will not put up with
[6:25] Speaker 1: sound doctrine instead to suit their own desires they will
[6:30] Speaker 1: gather around them a great number of teachers to say
[6:35] Speaker 1: what their itching ears want to hear yep you heard
[6:39] Speaker 1: that right itching ears that just means that people like
[6:44] Speaker 1: to hear what they want to be true The man
[6:48] Speaker 1: of God wanted to eat and was hungry. So when
[6:52] Speaker 1: the prophet said, sure, you can eat, he chose to
[6:57] Speaker 1: believe it. Let's compare some things that the world tells
[7:01] Speaker 1: us lately against what God says in his word.
[7:06] Speaker 3: Ready?
[7:07] Speaker 1: Number one, the world says you should love yourself more
[7:13] Speaker 1: than anything. And put yourself first. You deserve it. But
[7:19] Speaker 1: God's word, the Bible says in Philippians 2, 1 through 3.
[7:25] Speaker 1: And I'm paraphrasing here. Don't be selfish. Think about others
[7:30] Speaker 1: and put them first. Because you know that's how Jesus
[7:36] Speaker 1: loves people. Another thing the world says, number two, is
[7:41] Speaker 1: you are enough. You can do anything. You have everything
[7:48] Speaker 1: you need and don't need anyone. God's word says in
[7:53] Speaker 1: the Bible, I am the vine, you are the branches.
[7:58] Speaker 1: He who remains in me and I in him bears
[8:03] Speaker 1: much fruit. For apart from me, you can do nothing.
[8:09] Speaker 1: You can read that in John 15, 5. The world
[8:14] Speaker 1: says any truth you want to believe is fine. It's
[8:19] Speaker 1: your own truth. God's word says in the Bible, in
[8:24] Speaker 1: John 14, 6, Jesus said to him, I am the way,
[8:30] Speaker 1: the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
[8:34] Speaker 1: Father except through me. See what I mean? Let's remember
[8:40] Speaker 1: today to listen to God's voice above all others. As
[8:45] Speaker 1: today's story ends, the man of God gets killed by
[8:49] Speaker 1: a lion in the street. The old prophet carries his
[8:53] Speaker 1: body home on a donkey and buries it. Perhaps this
[8:57] Speaker 1: old prophet understood that his bad advice brought about the
[9:01] Speaker 1: man's death. And just maybe he was more careful about
[9:05] Speaker 1: the voices he listened to from then on. Thanks for
[9:10] Speaker 1: being here today. Remember, you don't have to be worried
[9:13] Speaker 1: about which voices to listen to. God helps us know
[9:17] Speaker 1: what's true. And it's all in his word, the Bible.
[9:23] Speaker 1: Come back next time because we are back to the Kings.
[9:27] Speaker 1: And you do not want to miss it. The Bible is, ready?
[9:32] Speaker 1: The best story ever told. It's God's story to you.
[9:38] Speaker 1: And it's all true. Enjoyed the podcast? Please leave a
