[1:15] Speaker 3: Elijah in the Whirlwind In our last story, Ahaziah asked Beelzebub,
[1:22] Speaker 3: the god of Ekron, if he would be healed. Elijah,
[1:26] Speaker 3: the prophet, intercepted the messengers and said that Ahaziah would
[1:29] Speaker 3: die and the Lord is not pleased. Ahaziah tried to
[1:34] Speaker 3: send men to get Elijah, but they were consumed by fire.
[1:39] Speaker 3: Ahaziah died, as the Lord said, and his kingdom was
[1:43] Speaker 3: given to Joram. In this story, Elijah will be taken
[1:47] Speaker 3: to heaven, and Elisha will become the prophet, as inspired
[1:52] Speaker 3: by 2 Kings.
[1:57] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julia Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[2:00] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. I'm so happy you're here. Today, we
[2:04] Speaker 1: will hear what happens when Elisha and Elijah have to
[2:09] Speaker 1: say goodbye and the fantastic way God takes Elijah to
[2:13] Speaker 1: his new home. We'll also discuss the gift God gave
[2:17] Speaker 1: Elisha when Elijah was gone. Let's jump in and hear
[2:22] Speaker 1: the whole story.
[2:26] Speaker 3: The Lord was about to take Elijah to heaven in
[2:29] Speaker 3: a whirlwind. And then Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here.
[2:35] Speaker 3: The Lord is sending me to Bethel. Elisha said, As
[2:39] Speaker 3: long as the Lord lives and as long as you live,
[2:42] Speaker 3: I will not leave you. Both men went to Bethel.
[2:47] Speaker 3: When they arrived, all of the other prophets were asking Elisha,
[2:51] Speaker 3: Do you know that the Lord is going to take
[2:53] Speaker 3: your master to heaven today? Elisha said, Of course I
[2:57] Speaker 3: know that. Please don't talk about it. Elijah said to Elisha.
[3:02] Speaker 1: Stay here.
[3:04] Speaker 3: The Lord is sending me to Jericho. Elisha said, As
[3:08] Speaker 3: long as the Lord lives, and as long as you live,
[3:11] Speaker 3: I will not leave you. So both men went to Jericho.
[3:17] Speaker 3: When they arrived, all of the other prophets were asking Elisha,
[3:21] Speaker 3: Do you know that the Lord is going to take
[3:23] Speaker 3: your master to heaven today? Elisha said, Of course I
[3:27] Speaker 3: know that. Please don't talk about it. Then Elisha said
[3:32] Speaker 3: to Elisha, Stay here. The Lord is sending me to
[3:36] Speaker 3: the Jordan. Elisha said, As long as the Lord lives
[3:39] Speaker 3: and as long as you live, I will not leave you.
[3:43] Speaker 3: So both men went to the Jordan. Fifty men from
[3:48] Speaker 3: the guild of prophets were watching Elisha and Elisha as
[3:51] Speaker 3: they stood at the Jordan. Elisha rolled up his cloak.
[3:56] Speaker 3: struck the ground with it, and the water divided to
[3:59] Speaker 3: the left and right. Elijah and Elisha walked across the
[4:03] Speaker 3: Jordan on completely dry ground. When they crossed the Jordan,
[4:08] Speaker 3: Elijah asked Elisha, What can I do for you before
[4:12] Speaker 3: I am taken to heaven? Please, bless me with a
[4:17] Speaker 3: double portion of your spirit. Elijah knew that this was
[4:22] Speaker 3: a difficult thing to do, but he told Elisha, You
[4:26] Speaker 3: can have a double portion of my spirit if you
[4:29] Speaker 3: see me being taken from you. If you don't see me,
[4:33] Speaker 3: then you will not get it. The two men continued
[4:37] Speaker 3: walking and talking. Then suddenly a chariot of fire and
[4:41] Speaker 3: horses of fire appeared to separate the two men, and
[4:44] Speaker 3: Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha
[4:48] Speaker 3: saw all of this happening and cried out for Elijah
[4:51] Speaker 3: until he could no longer see him. Elisha picked up
[4:55] Speaker 3: his own garment and tore it in two. Then he
[4:59] Speaker 3: picked up the cloak of Elijah and stood at the
[5:01] Speaker 3: bank of the Jordan. Elisha took the cloak and struck
[5:06] Speaker 3: the water with it, saying, Where is the God of
[5:09] Speaker 3: Elijah now? When Elisha struck the water, it divided in two,
[5:14] Speaker 3: and he crossed over on dry ground. All of the
[5:18] Speaker 3: prophets that were watching said, The spirit of Elijah is
[5:22] Speaker 3: now resting on Elisha. The prophets went to meet Elisha
[5:26] Speaker 3: and bowed down to him. They said, We have able
[5:30] Speaker 3: men here that are able to go find your master.
[5:33] Speaker 3: It's possible that the Lord picked him up and dropped
[5:36] Speaker 3: him off on a mountain or in a valley. Elisha
[5:39] Speaker 3: told them not to go, but they kept asking. So
[5:42] Speaker 3: Elisha sent them out to look for his master. The
[5:46] Speaker 3: men searched for three days but did not find Elisha.
[5:51] Speaker 3: When they came back, Alicia said, Didn't I tell you
[5:55] Speaker 3: not to go? The people of Jericho said to Alicia,
[5:59] Speaker 3: Our city is in great order, but we have a
[6:02] Speaker 3: serious problem. The water is bad, and it's hindering our
[6:06] Speaker 3: land from producing crops. Alicia said, Bring me a bowl
[6:11] Speaker 3: with some salt in it. The people did exactly as
[6:14] Speaker 3: Alicia said, and he went out to the water and
[6:17] Speaker 3: threw the salt in it. Alicia said, This water is healed.
[6:23] Speaker 3: Never again will this water cause death or hinder the land.
[6:27] Speaker 3: The water remains pure to this day. Alicia then traveled
[6:31] Speaker 3: to Bethel, and as he was walking on the road,
[6:34] Speaker 3: some boys started to make fun of him. The boys said,
[6:38] Speaker 3: Get out of here, baldy! Alicia turned around and cursed
[6:42] Speaker 3: the boys. Then two bears came out of the woods
[6:47] Speaker 3: and killed 42 of the boys. Elisha continued on to
[6:52] Speaker 3: Mount Carmel and then returned to Samaria.
[7:01] Speaker 1: In today's story, Elisha had to say goodbye to his
[7:05] Speaker 1: best friend, Elijah. That was kind of sad, wasn't it?
[7:09] Speaker 1: Elijah knew he was leaving to go and to be
[7:12] Speaker 1: with God. So did Elisha and all the other prophets.
[7:17] Speaker 1: So on Elijah's last day, he went town to town
[7:21] Speaker 1: to say goodbye to all his friends. Have you ever
[7:24] Speaker 1: had to say goodbye to your friends? Maybe you moved
[7:28] Speaker 1: to another house far away. Or maybe your best friend
[7:32] Speaker 1: moved to a different city or state. And although you
[7:36] Speaker 1: knew the move would happen, you didn't want it to
[7:39] Speaker 1: happen yet. You wanted just one more day, just one
[7:43] Speaker 1: more hour. Just one more chance to talk or play together.
[7:48] Speaker 1: That's how Elisha felt about Elijah leaving. So when Elijah
[7:52] Speaker 1: said that he was going to Gilgal, Elisha said, me too.
[7:57] Speaker 1: And when Elijah said he was going to Jericho, Elisha said,
[8:01] Speaker 1: me too. And when Elijah said he was going to
[8:05] Speaker 1: the Jordan River, Elisha wanted just a few more minutes.
[8:10] Speaker 1: Just a couple more conversations. Me too. He said, Elijah
[8:16] Speaker 1: and Elisha walked and talked together as long as they could.
[8:20] Speaker 1: When they reached the river, Elijah snapped the water with
[8:24] Speaker 1: his robe. And just like God parted the Red Sea
[8:28] Speaker 1: for Moses and the Jordan for Joshua and the Israelites,
[8:33] Speaker 1: God opened a path of dry ground for Elijah and
[8:36] Speaker 1: Elisha to cross over. Elijah knew Elisha was sad, and
[8:42] Speaker 1: he said, What can I leave you before I go,
[8:45] Speaker 1: my friend? Elisha thought about all the amazing miracles God
[8:50] Speaker 1: had done through Elijah. Then he knew what he wanted.
[8:54] Speaker 1: Can I have the same power of God's Spirit that
[8:57] Speaker 1: you have, but twice as much? That was a big request.
[9:02] Speaker 1: It's like your friend asking for all of your toys,
[9:06] Speaker 1: Elijah knew the power to do miracles wasn't his to give.
[9:08] Speaker 1: It was God's. So, he told Elisha, Then, as they
[9:10] Speaker 1: were walking, they heard the sound of galloping horses. Suddenly
[9:30] Speaker 1: a fiery chariot pulled by flaming stallions whooshed past and
[9:36] Speaker 1: swept Elijah high up into the sky to heaven. Elisha
[9:40] Speaker 1: stood alone on the ground watching him go. Then he
[9:45] Speaker 1: picked up Elijah's robe and returned to the Jordan River.
[9:50] Speaker 1: The water split just as it did for Elijah, and
[9:55] Speaker 1: Elisha crossed over, filled with God's Spirit. Now there's another.
[10:00] Speaker 1: person in the Bible who left his friends to go
[10:03] Speaker 1: to heaven And they received the Holy Spirit when he
[10:06] Speaker 1: was gone Do you know who that is? Yes, it's
[10:10] Speaker 1: Jesus When Jesus returned home to heaven, he had to
[10:14] Speaker 1: say goodbye to his friends, the disciples They were sad,
[10:18] Speaker 1: like Elisha They all wanted one more day with Jesus,
[10:23] Speaker 1: just one more hour. But he had said to them,
[10:27] Speaker 1: Don't worry, when I go, I won't leave you here alone.
[10:31] Speaker 1: I'll send you God's Spirit. And even though you've seen
[10:35] Speaker 1: me do great things, you will do even greater things
[10:39] Speaker 1: in my name. And he was right. Jesus healed many
[10:44] Speaker 1: people and spread the good news of salvation all throughout Israel.
[10:49] Speaker 1: But by his spirit, Jesus' followers healed even more people
[10:53] Speaker 1: because they helped invent hospitals and orphanages and care homes.
[10:59] Speaker 1: And they spread Jesus' message all over the world. In fact,
[11:04] Speaker 1: you're hearing it today, right now, because of them. God
[11:08] Speaker 1: gave Elisha a double portion of the spirit he gave Elijah.
[11:13] Speaker 1: And Jesus' followers carried his message further than even he
[11:17] Speaker 1: did on earth. Through the Spirit, God gave them. And
[11:21] Speaker 1: when you ask Jesus to be your Savior and to
[11:24] Speaker 1: forgive you of your sins, God gives you the Holy
[11:28] Speaker 1: Spirit too. I'm so happy you joined me today. Come
