[1:25] Speaker 3: with the triumphal entry, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:32] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:36] Speaker 1: I am so glad you're here today for the Kids
[1:38] Speaker 1: Bible in a Year podcast. In today's passage, we enter
[1:43] Speaker 1: into what we call Holy Week, the last week in
[1:47] Speaker 1: the life of Jesus. He's going to ride on a
[1:50] Speaker 1: donkey and receive praise. And days later, the shouts are
[1:55] Speaker 1: going to sound very different. But that's not going to
[1:58] Speaker 1: stop him because his love is too great. Let's listen
[2:03] Speaker 1: and see what he wants to tell us from today's story.
[2:08] Speaker 1: Jesus arrived at this city named Bethany almost a week
[2:12] Speaker 1: before the Passover happened. There was a man named Lazarus
[2:16] Speaker 1: that lived here where the Lord had actually brought him
[2:19] Speaker 1: back to life after death. While he was there, They
[2:23] Speaker 1: provided a dinner in his name where Lazarus was also
[2:27] Speaker 1: attending and where a woman named Martha was serving them. Mary,
[2:31] Speaker 1: Martha's sister, decided to go get a jar of expensive
[2:35] Speaker 1: oil to wipe the feet of Jesus with her hair.
[2:38] Speaker 1: After this was done, the smell of perfume began to
[2:41] Speaker 1: fill the place. One of Jesus' disciples, who will later
[2:46] Speaker 1: turn his back on the Lord named Judas Iscariot, asked,
[2:50] Speaker 1: Why didn't we sell this perfume so we could have
[2:53] Speaker 1: been given that money earned from it to the poor?
[2:56] Speaker 1: It would have been worth a lot.
[2:58] Speaker 3: Judas was not saying this because he really cared about
[3:01] Speaker 3: the poor, but because he was a thief. He wanted
[3:05] Speaker 3: to keep it for himself because he was the one
[3:08] Speaker 3: who was in charge of the money bag. Jesus exclaimed,
[3:12] Speaker 3: Everyone needs to leave Mary alone. She is supposed to
[3:15] Speaker 3: keep this perfume for when I get buried. I will
[3:19] Speaker 3: not be around forever. but the poor will always be here.
[3:25] Speaker 3: There was a large crowd of Jews that found out
[3:27] Speaker 3: that Jesus was in town. They also found out that
[3:30] Speaker 3: Lazarus was in town too because of his testimony of
[3:33] Speaker 3: when Jesus raised him up from the dead. So the
[3:37] Speaker 3: high priests wanted to kill Lazarus because the Jews were
[3:40] Speaker 3: beginning to believe in Jesus' message from this testimony. Two
[3:45] Speaker 3: disciples and Jesus came upon the Mount of Olives and
[3:49] Speaker 3: Jesus told them, Find a donkey in the next village
[3:53] Speaker 3: that's tied up with its child. Bring them to me.
[3:57] Speaker 3: And if anyone says anything to you about it, just
[4:00] Speaker 3: say that your Lord sent you to get them and
[4:03] Speaker 3: bring them to me. This will come to pass because
[4:06] Speaker 3: a prophet has proclaimed, Zion, your king will come gently
[4:11] Speaker 3: riding on a donkey along.
[4:13] Speaker 2: With its offspring.
[4:15] Speaker 3: The disciples did just this and obeyed what the Lord
[4:18] Speaker 3: had instructed for them to do. When they grabbed the
[4:21] Speaker 3: donkey and its baby, they placed their coats on the
[4:24] Speaker 3: backs of them so that Jesus would be able to
[4:26] Speaker 3: sit on them. There was a large crowd that began
[4:29] Speaker 3: to gather and laid down their coats on the ground
[4:33] Speaker 3: along with palm tree leaves, making a path for Jesus.
[4:37] Speaker 3: The crowds shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David. Those
[4:42] Speaker 3: who come in the name of the Lord are blessed.
[4:45] Speaker 3: Hosanna in heaven the highest. Then Jesus entered the city.
[4:50] Speaker 3: And everyone asked who this man was. People said to them,
[4:55] Speaker 3: that is Jesus Christ, son of man and the Nazarene prophet.
[5:01] Speaker 3: There were Pharisees within the crowd telling Jesus to correct
[5:05] Speaker 3: his disciples. Then Jesus responded to them saying, stones will
[5:11] Speaker 3: begin to cry out if they continue to be quiet.
[5:19] Speaker 1: Today's story begins a week before Passover. As a reminder,
[5:23] Speaker 1: Passover is a Jewish holiday or festival to remember and
[5:27] Speaker 1: celebrate their freedom from slavery in Egypt. They think about
[5:32] Speaker 1: how awful it was, how mean Pharaoh was, how brave
[5:36] Speaker 1: Moses was, and most of all, how faithful and powerful
[5:41] Speaker 1: God was. They praise God for bringing them out of
[5:44] Speaker 1: Egypt and into the promised land. So Jesus and his
[5:48] Speaker 1: friends arrive in Bethany for a special dinner with Mary, Martha, Lazarus,
[5:53] Speaker 1: and other friends. Martha was serving and working hard as usual,
[5:57] Speaker 1: while Mary took a jar of expensive perfume and wiped
[6:01] Speaker 1: the feet of Jesus with her hair. Everyone smelled the
[6:05] Speaker 1: nice perfume, and Judah seemed to think she was wasting it.
[6:10] Speaker 1: After all, this perfume was so expensive that it was
[6:13] Speaker 1: worth almost a year's wages of work. What no one
[6:17] Speaker 1: understood at the time was that Mary was actually preparing
[6:20] Speaker 1: the body of Jesus for his burial. She was anointing
[6:24] Speaker 1: him and showing him great respect. Meanwhile, the Jewish leaders
[6:29] Speaker 1: were getting antsy and wanted Jesus.
[6:32] Speaker 2: Out of the picture.
[6:33] Speaker 1: Too many people believed in him now, and he was
[6:36] Speaker 1: getting in the way of their law and power. We
[6:39] Speaker 1: then heard Jesus tell two of his disciples to look
[6:43] Speaker 1: for a donkey tied up and bring it to him.
[6:46] Speaker 1: Let's pause here for a moment. Do you remember what
[6:50] Speaker 1: a prophecy is? A prophecy is something that was told
[6:54] Speaker 1: years and years and years earlier, and it comes true.
[6:59] Speaker 1: There are many prophecies in the Old Testament about the
[7:02] Speaker 1: life of Jesus, where he would come from, what he
[7:05] Speaker 1: would do. There are also prophecies about what will happen
[7:09] Speaker 1: when the world comes to an end. This donkey was
[7:13] Speaker 1: actually part of an Old Testament prophecy. It's something that
[7:18] Speaker 1: a prophet named Zechariah predicted hundreds of years earlier. We
[7:23] Speaker 1: read about it in Zechariah 9.9. Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion. Shout,
[7:30] Speaker 1: daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king comes to you. He
[7:34] Speaker 1: is righteous and having salvation lowly and riding on a donkey,
[7:39] Speaker 1: even on a colt. The Foul of a Donkey. This
[7:44] Speaker 1: is an event we call the Triumph Entry. It's the
[7:47] Speaker 1: day where people threw their coats on the back of
[7:50] Speaker 1: a donkey, made a path on the road, and waved
[7:53] Speaker 1: palm branches in the air shouting, Hosanna! Which basically means, yay,
[7:58] Speaker 1: God is saving us. You see, God's chosen people had
[8:02] Speaker 1: been waiting and awaiting for a Messiah. God had promised
[8:06] Speaker 1: them that someone was coming to rescue them. While many
[8:10] Speaker 1: still didn't believe it was Jesus, many did believe. And
[8:14] Speaker 1: the Pharisees did not like it one bit. Now, let's
[8:18] Speaker 1: talk about this donkey. Jesus chose to ride into the
[8:22] Speaker 1: city on a young donkey because there was nothing spectacular
[8:26] Speaker 1: about a donkey. If we could choose, we would probably
[8:29] Speaker 1: choose a fancy white horse. Oh, or maybe a shiny
[8:34] Speaker 1: red Lamborghini. We often want people to think we're cool.
[8:38] Speaker 1: Important and powerful. But not Jesus. He came to show
[8:43] Speaker 1: us another way. He had all the power in the universe.
[8:47] Speaker 1: But he entered the city on a little donkey. Knowing
[8:51] Speaker 1: that in just a few days he would die on
[8:55] Speaker 1: a cross. Jesus showed us that the true... Let me
[9:00] Speaker 1: do that again. But not Jesus. He came to show
[9:05] Speaker 1: us another way. He had all the power in the universe.
[9:09] Speaker 1: He had entered the city on a little donkey, knowing
[9:12] Speaker 1: that just in a few days he would die on
[9:15] Speaker 1: a cross. Jesus showed us that true love serves others.
[9:21] Speaker 1: It does what's best for others. And Jesus loved you
[9:25] Speaker 1: and me and all people. So he wouldn't stop until
[9:29] Speaker 1: he had completed the mission of saving us from sin.
[9:33] Speaker 1: But more on that later. I'm glad you joined me today.
[9:36] Speaker 1: I hope you'll come back next time to hear about
[9:39] Speaker 1: why Jesus gets mad twice. So much is about to happen,
[9:43] Speaker 1: so don't miss it. Here we go. The Bible is
[9:47] Speaker 1: the best story ever told. It's God's story to you,
[9:49] Speaker 1: and it's all true. Loved what you heard today? Pass
