Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 119. We explore a story from the book of 2 Kings in the Bible, focusing on the downfall of Israel during the reign of King Hoshea. Despite witnessing God's miracles and receiving His commandments, the Israelites, led by their king, turn to idol worship, creating shrines and offering sacrifices to false gods. This disobedience leads to severe consequences when King Shalmaneser of Assyria attacks Samaria, capturing the Israelites. This tragic event serves as a divine punishment for their persistent sinning and breaking the covenant with God. We'll learn how even Judah, the remaining tribe, falls into sin, leading to God's withdrawal of His protection. [1:16] Speaker 2: Israel's sins and punishment. In our last story, King Ahaz
[1:21] Speaker 2: ruled Judah and did evil by setting up an altar.
[1:25] Speaker 2: Ahaz sent gifts to the king of Assyria for help.
[1:29] Speaker 2: In this story, God will allow the king of Assyria
[1:32] Speaker 2: to invade Israel because of their sins, as inspired by
[1:37] Speaker 2: second kings.
[1:41] Speaker 1: Hey there, welcome back. This is Julia Sadler, and thanks
[1:45] Speaker 1: for listening to the Kids Bible in a Year podcast.
[1:48] Speaker 1: In today's story, the people of Israel are taken away
[1:51] Speaker 1: as prisoners once and for all, and we learn a
[1:55] Speaker 1: tough lesson about consequences. Let's dive in.
[2:02] Speaker 2: After God had done many wonders for Israel and even
[2:05] Speaker 2: kept his promise to them, the people still sinned. They
[2:10] Speaker 2: created idols and worshipped them. They made these idols shrines
[2:14] Speaker 2: to worship these idols at and dedicated many offerings and
[2:19] Speaker 2: sacrifices to them as well. The king of Israel reigning
[2:23] Speaker 2: at this time was named King Hosea, and he was
[2:26] Speaker 2: a bad king. Many of the Israelites got away with
[2:31] Speaker 2: disobeying God because King Hoshea disobeyed God heavily himself. One day,
[2:37] Speaker 2: King Shalmaneser attacked the city of Samaria and took all
[2:41] Speaker 2: of the Israelites that lived there and made them prisoners.
[2:46] Speaker 2: This happened to them because they sinned against God. This
[2:50] Speaker 2: was God's way of punishing them. God had warned them
[2:54] Speaker 2: time and time again. In fact, God even sent one
[2:58] Speaker 2: of his prophets to give them a message, saying, I
[3:01] Speaker 2: am your God, and I command that you obey everything
[3:05] Speaker 2: I command you to do. I've given your ancestors and
[3:09] Speaker 2: now you all commandments to obey. I made sure that
[3:13] Speaker 2: I told my prophets to tell you exactly what those
[3:16] Speaker 2: commandments were. Nevertheless, the Israelites continued to be stubborn and
[3:22] Speaker 2: very disobedient towards God. They broke the promise that they
[3:26] Speaker 2: had made with their ancestors years ago to worship only
[3:29] Speaker 2: God by making two golden calves. Those golden calves and
[3:34] Speaker 2: a God named Baal was what they worshipped instead. They
[3:38] Speaker 2: practiced doing disobedient things that the other nations around them did.
[3:43] Speaker 2: That is why God decided to turn his back on
[3:47] Speaker 2: those people and allow them to be punished. He removed
[3:51] Speaker 2: Israel from his presence. and only the tribe of Judah
[3:55] Speaker 2: was left. But they also sinned, and so the Lord
[3:59] Speaker 2: rejected all the people of Israel, and as he removed
[4:03] Speaker 2: his presence, allowed them to be taken out of the
[4:06] Speaker 2: land to Assyria.
[4:14] Speaker 1: What a sad day for the nation of Israel, God's
[4:17] Speaker 1: chosen people. And if we feel that way, imagine how
[4:21] Speaker 1: God their father must have felt. After all he had
[4:24] Speaker 1: done for them, from helping them escape Egypt, to parting
[4:29] Speaker 1: the Red Sea, to many other miracles, victories, and provisions,
[4:33] Speaker 1: they continued to turn their back on him over and
[4:37] Speaker 1: over again. They chose to go their way instead of
[4:40] Speaker 1: God's way. He had been so faithful to keep his promises,
[4:45] Speaker 1: yet they could not stay faithful to him. He lovingly
[4:49] Speaker 1: sent prophets to warn them, and convince them to turn
[4:52] Speaker 1: back to the one true God. But they just became
[4:56] Speaker 1: more and more stubborn. They followed an evil king by
[5:00] Speaker 1: worshiping false gods like Baal and doing things other evil
[5:05] Speaker 1: nations did. And remember what happens when we follow someone
[5:09] Speaker 1: who does not follow God? It gets us into big trouble.
[5:15] Speaker 1: So because of Israel's stubbornness and disobedience, and Judah's as well,
[5:20] Speaker 1: God allowed them to be taken out of their land
[5:23] Speaker 1: as prisoners to the Assyrians. This meant that they were
[5:27] Speaker 1: taken from their home and usually had to walk a long,
[5:31] Speaker 1: long way to live somewhere else, somewhere they didn't know.
[5:35] Speaker 1: It was an awful way to leave their country. If
[5:39] Speaker 1: you're like me, you might be wondering, if God is God.
[5:43] Speaker 2: And he can do anything, Why didn't he.
[5:46] Speaker 1: Just make the Israelites obey him? He definitely had the
[5:50] Speaker 1: power to if he wanted to, right? Why did he
[5:53] Speaker 1: let them walk away from him like that? Couldn't he
[5:56] Speaker 1: have forced them to stay and obey? Sure, he could have.
[6:01] Speaker 1: And we are right to think that God can do
[6:04] Speaker 1: anything he pleases. But time and again in scripture, we
[6:07] Speaker 1: see that God gives his children the ability to make
[6:10] Speaker 1: their own choices. And those choices have consequences. A consequence
[6:16] Speaker 1: is something that happens after you make a decision or
[6:20] Speaker 1: because you made a certain decision. For instance, if you
[6:25] Speaker 1: decide to stick your hand in the large beehive to
[6:27] Speaker 1: get some honey, you're going to get stung. Getting stung
[6:32] Speaker 1: by a bee is a consequence of sticking your hand
[6:36] Speaker 1: in the beehive. In the same way, God allows us
[6:40] Speaker 1: to face the consequences of our choices. Think about it
[6:44] Speaker 1: this way. If the Israelites had rejected the false gods,
[6:48] Speaker 1: continued to obey God's rules in the temple, and kept
[6:52] Speaker 1: their hearts right and clean before him, their consequences would
[6:56] Speaker 1: have been very, very different. Who knows the great things
[7:01] Speaker 1: that could have happened and what God would have done
[7:04] Speaker 1: to bless them? Well, instead, Israel chose to go their
[7:08] Speaker 1: own way. They chose disobedience and stubbornness, and the consequences
[7:13] Speaker 1: were not fun at all. There are times in our
[7:16] Speaker 1: lives when we make wrong choices. I know I've done
[7:19] Speaker 1: that before. None of us is perfect, and God knows that.
[7:25] Speaker 1: But it doesn't mean nothing will happen to us whenever
[7:28] Speaker 1: we sin against Him. Sometimes you will have to face
[7:31] Speaker 1: consequences for your sin that are hard and sad. In
[7:36] Speaker 1: those times, remember that God wants you to learn from
[7:39] Speaker 1: your mistakes so you will choose better next time. Let
[7:42] Speaker 1: those sad consequences remind you to do the right thing
[7:46] Speaker 1: and to honor God in all of your choices. When
[7:50] Speaker 1: you do, you'll get consequences from those good choices too.
[7:54] Speaker 1: But they will be much better. Because as we know,
[7:59] Speaker 1: doing things God's way is so much better than doing
[8:02] Speaker 1: things our way. His way is always the best way.
[8:07] Speaker 1: We can count on that. Well, thanks for listening to
[8:10] Speaker 1: today's story. The sun is coming out next time and
[8:13] Speaker 1: shining on a new wonderful king named Hezekiah. I can't
[8:18] Speaker 1: wait for you to hear about him. And remember, the
[8:22] Speaker 1: Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story
