Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 155. One Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a synagogue and saw a man with a crippled hand. The teachers of the law watched to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, hoping to criticize Him. Jesus healed the man's hand, teaching that it's always right to do good, even on the Sabbath. Later, Jesus chose twelve special friends, called apostles, to be with Him, learn from Him, and help spread His message. He warned them that following Him wouldn't be easy, but they should be brave and remember that God cares for them more than anything. [1:10] Speaker 3: The Twelve In our last story, Jesus told a paralytic
[1:15] Speaker 3: man to take up his mat and walk after forgiving
[1:19] Speaker 3: his sins and also calls Matthew to be a disciple.
[1:24] Speaker 3: In this story, We will learn about Jesus challenging the
[1:27] Speaker 3: teachers of the law on what the Sabbath means and
[1:31] Speaker 3: then sending out his 12 followers as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:40] Speaker 1: Hi, friends. It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Welcome back for another story from the Kids Bible in
[1:48] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. Question. How many hairs do you think
[1:52] Speaker 1: are on your head right now? Can you even count
[1:55] Speaker 1: that high? We are talking all about it in today's story.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Jesus is showing us once again just how much he
[2:03] Speaker 1: loves us. Let's listen in and see what he says
[2:06] Speaker 1: to us today.
[2:09] Speaker 3: On the Sabbath day, he went to the synagogue to teach.
[2:13] Speaker 3: In the synagogue was a man with a crippled right hand.
[2:17] Speaker 3: The teachers of the law were all standing around watching
[2:20] Speaker 3: to see if Jesus would heal on the Sabbath day.
[2:24] Speaker 3: They wanted to see Jesus do something wrong, and they
[2:27] Speaker 3: were waiting to criticize him. Jesus knew what they were thinking,
[2:32] Speaker 3: so he said to the man with the crippled hand,
[2:35] Speaker 3: Get up and stand before these people. The man did
[2:39] Speaker 3: as he said and stood up. Jesus said to the
[2:43] Speaker 3: teachers of the law, I ask you, which is right
[2:48] Speaker 3: to do on the Sabbath day?
[2:50] Speaker 2: Do good or do evil?
[2:53] Speaker 3: Is it a day to save a life or destroy one?
[2:56] Speaker 3: There was no response from any of them. Jesus answered
[3:00] Speaker 3: his own question and said, It's absolutely right to do
[3:05] Speaker 3: good on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man, Stretch
[3:09] Speaker 3: out your hand. The man stretched out his hand to Jesus,
[3:14] Speaker 3: and it was completely healed. The teachers of the law
[3:18] Speaker 3: became very angry and talked with each other about what
[3:22] Speaker 3: they could do Later, Jesus went up on a mountainside
[3:28] Speaker 3: and called to him some men that were his closest followers.
[3:32] Speaker 3: These were the men that Jesus had called, and they
[3:35] Speaker 3: came to him.
[3:37] Speaker 2: This is when.
[3:38] Speaker 3: Jesus taught them and prepared them for the ministry they
[3:41] Speaker 3: would do. He appointed twelve men, calling them apostles, which
[3:45] Speaker 3: means they were being sent on a mission. Jesus wanted
[3:49] Speaker 3: these men to be with him, so that he could
[3:51] Speaker 3: send them out to preach and have authority to heal
[3:54] Speaker 3: and call out evil spirits, he appointed these men. Simon,
[4:00] Speaker 3: who was renamed Peter, James and John, the son of Zebedee,
[4:06] Speaker 3: who were called sons of thunder, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,
[4:13] Speaker 3: who was formerly a tax collector, Thomas, another man named James,
[4:18] Speaker 3: son of Alphaeus, Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot,
[4:25] Speaker 3: the one who betrayed Jesus. Jesus said to the twelve men, Listen,
[4:32] Speaker 3: I am sending you out into the world, and you
[4:34] Speaker 3: will be like sheep among wolves. Be smart as snakes
[4:39] Speaker 3: and as harmless as doves. Be careful of people.
[4:43] Speaker 1: They will arrest you and take you to court.
[4:45] Speaker 3: They will beat you in their synagogues. Because of my life,
[4:49] Speaker 3: You will be taken to stand before officials and kings.
[4:53] Speaker 3: But I tell you, don't be afraid of people. They
[4:58] Speaker 3: can only hurt the body, not the soul. Rather, only
[5:03] Speaker 3: be afraid of the one who can destroy the body
[5:06] Speaker 3: and the soul. God knows all things. Not even a
[5:10] Speaker 3: little bird will fall to the ground and die without
[5:13] Speaker 3: the Father knowing it. God even knows the exact number
[5:17] Speaker 3: of hairs on your head. So don't be afraid because
[5:21] Speaker 3: you are worth more than many birds. Watch out because
[5:26] Speaker 3: many people of your own family will want you to
[5:29] Speaker 3: be faithful to them instead of me. The one who
[5:34] Speaker 3: loves his parents more than he loves me is not.
[5:37] Speaker 2: Worthy to be my follower.
[5:39] Speaker 3: The one who loves their children more than he loves
[5:42] Speaker 3: me is not worthy to be my follower. Anyone who
[5:46] Speaker 3: does not take up his cross And follow me is
[5:49] Speaker 3: not worthy of me. The one who tries to hold
[5:53] Speaker 3: on to his life will surely give up true life.
[5:59] Speaker 3: But the one who gives up life for me will
[6:03] Speaker 3: hold on to true life.
[6:10] Speaker 1: Will those religious leaders ever leave Jesus alone? I'm afraid not.
[6:16] Speaker 1: Let's talk about what we heard today and see how
[6:18] Speaker 1: Jesus continues to do things differently, making a new path
[6:23] Speaker 1: to God that not everyone understands yet. We open up
[6:28] Speaker 1: with Jesus and some religious leaders in the temple on
[6:31] Speaker 1: the Sabbath. They see a man there whose hand is paralyzed.
[6:36] Speaker 1: He probably couldn't move it or it just didn't work
[6:39] Speaker 1: the right way. Now, the Sabbath was one day a
[6:44] Speaker 1: week dedicated to rest. Just as God rested on the
[6:48] Speaker 1: seventh day, God told his people to save one day
[6:52] Speaker 1: every week for rest. Do you remember the Jewish religious
[6:56] Speaker 1: leaders who were always out to get Jesus? They didn't
[7:01] Speaker 1: like this new teaching of his, and they wanted to
[7:04] Speaker 1: get him into trouble. So when they saw him healing
[7:07] Speaker 1: a man in the temple on the Sabbath, they immediately
[7:11] Speaker 1: accused him of working on the day that was saved
[7:14] Speaker 1: for rest. What did Jesus do? He asked a question
[7:18] Speaker 1: right back to them, as usual. Is it better to
[7:22] Speaker 1: do something good on the Sabbath, meaning heal this man's hand,
[7:27] Speaker 1: or to do something evil, not help him? They were speechless. Again,
[7:33] Speaker 1: Jesus was showing his followers that although his way of
[7:37] Speaker 1: doing things seemed different, it would all make sense one
[7:41] Speaker 1: day soon. The law would no longer be the most
[7:44] Speaker 1: important thing, but believing and trusting in Jesus would be.
[7:50] Speaker 1: And as you heard, Jesus healed the man's hand, and
[7:54] Speaker 1: the leaders were furious, jealous, and confused. Who was this man? Next,
[8:02] Speaker 1: we heard how Jesus chose his 12 disciples, his closest followers.
[8:07] Speaker 1: These were the friends that would learn from Jesus. and
[8:10] Speaker 1: would help him on his mission. And Jesus warns them
[8:15] Speaker 1: that this would not be an easy journey. These 12
[8:19] Speaker 1: men would be given the power to do things that
[8:21] Speaker 1: Jesus did, like heal others. He told them that people
[8:25] Speaker 1: who were against God would try to hurt them because
[8:28] Speaker 1: they were his followers. But he told them that they
[8:31] Speaker 1: did not have to be afraid. Because when you're on
[8:35] Speaker 1: God's side, nothing can hurt you on the inside. You
[8:39] Speaker 1: are safe with him forever. Then Jesus taught us something
[8:45] Speaker 1: so important. He said that even when the little birds
[8:49] Speaker 1: are sold, he sees and notices. His point was, if
[8:54] Speaker 1: I take care of these birds, don't you think I'll
[8:56] Speaker 1: take care of you, my child who I made and
[9:00] Speaker 1: who I love so very much? Next, he said that
[9:04] Speaker 1: he even knows how many hairs are on your head
[9:08] Speaker 1: right this very minute. What? That's how closely he watches
[9:13] Speaker 1: you and how well he knows you. You are always
[9:17] Speaker 1: on his mind. After all, he made you for a
[9:20] Speaker 1: special purpose and knows you inside and out. Today's story
[9:26] Speaker 1: ends with another flipped upside down teaching from Jesus. He
[9:31] Speaker 1: says that if you focus on making your life great
[9:34] Speaker 1: and easy and comfortable while you're on earth, you might
[9:38] Speaker 1: lose your life in eternity. But if you give up
[9:41] Speaker 1: your life for Christ by living the way he teaches
[9:45] Speaker 1: you to live, you will save your life in the
[9:47] Speaker 1: end and live forever in heaven. What a promise. Thanks
[9:54] Speaker 1: for listening today. I hope this story made you feel
[9:57] Speaker 1: better about your problems. Just knowing that God sees us
[10:01] Speaker 1: and knows us so well sometimes helps us feel safe
