[1:17] Speaker 3: Death of Elisha. In our last story, we learned about
[1:22] Speaker 3: the reign and rule of Joash. In this story... Elisha
[1:26] Speaker 3: will die after he gives Jehoash a message, as inspired
[1:32] Speaker 3: by 2 Kings.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Hi everyone, it's Joya Sadler here. Welcome back for another
[1:40] Speaker 1: story from the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Today
[1:44] Speaker 1: we say a final farewell to Elisha and learn just
[1:48] Speaker 1: how strong God is, especially when we're feeling weak. So
[1:53] Speaker 1: lean in and listen close.
[1:58] Speaker 3: Jehoas had become the king after his father Jehu had died.
[2:02] Speaker 3: He wasn't a good king, but he asked the Lord
[2:06] Speaker 3: for help, and the Lord did help him. His son's
[2:10] Speaker 3: name was Jehoash. Jehoas had died and left Jehoash to
[2:15] Speaker 3: become king. During his time as king, Elisha became sick
[2:20] Speaker 3: and was close to dying. Jehoash heard the news and
[2:25] Speaker 3: went to pay him a visit. The king sat beside
[2:28] Speaker 3: Elisha's bed and cried, My father, my father, he said,
[2:34] Speaker 3: the chariots and horsemen of Israel. Elisha told him, Go
[2:39] Speaker 3: get your bow and some arrows. When Jehoash returned with
[2:43] Speaker 3: his bow and arrows, the prophet told him, Grab the bow.
[2:48] Speaker 3: So the king did as told. Elisha put his hand
[2:51] Speaker 3: on top of Jehoash's hand and told him to open
[2:54] Speaker 3: the window. The king did as told. Elisha then said,
[3:00] Speaker 3: Shoot an arrow out the window. The king did as told.
[3:06] Speaker 3: This arrow is God's salvation, an arrow of deliverance from
[3:10] Speaker 3: Aram and victory over Syria. Now grab more arrows and
[3:15] Speaker 3: hit them with the ground. The king did as told
[3:18] Speaker 3: and hit the ground three times and stopped. Elisha groaned
[3:23] Speaker 3: and yelled at Jehoash. Only three times? You should have
[3:27] Speaker 3: hit it five or six times. You would have won
[3:30] Speaker 3: every battle against Syria. Now you'll only win three. Elisha
[3:36] Speaker 3: soon died and was buried in a tomb. The next spring,
[3:41] Speaker 3: some Israelite men were putting together a funeral for another
[3:44] Speaker 3: one of their neighbors. As they were doing this, they
[3:48] Speaker 3: heard some people coming toward them, and when they looked
[3:51] Speaker 3: up to see who the noise was coming from, They
[3:53] Speaker 3: realized it was Moabite raiders. Anxious and scared, they quickly
[3:58] Speaker 3: threw the body of the man into Elisha's tomb. As
[4:02] Speaker 3: soon as the corpse touched Elisha's bones, the man came
[4:06] Speaker 3: to life and stood up and then walked out on
[4:10] Speaker 3: his feet.
[4:15] Speaker 1: What a life Elisha lived. There's so much we can
[4:18] Speaker 1: learn from today's story. We opened with Jehoash as king
[4:23] Speaker 1: and Elisha beginning to feel very sick. The Bible tells
[4:27] Speaker 1: us that this sickness would eventually lead to his death.
[4:31] Speaker 1: But how could that be? God had just used Elisha
[4:35] Speaker 1: time and time again to heal others that were sick.
[4:39] Speaker 1: And he was such a faithful servant to God. Why
[4:43] Speaker 1: do you think God allowed Elisha to die of this sickness? Well,
[4:48] Speaker 1: This is a lesson we've learned before, and it's a
[4:51] Speaker 1: lesson you will learn throughout your whole life. God's ways
[4:55] Speaker 1: are not our ways. He does things differently than we
[4:58] Speaker 1: would because he has a big, giant, perfect plan that
[5:02] Speaker 1: never fails. So as usual, that means we can trust
[5:06] Speaker 1: him when bad things happen to good people. You might
[5:10] Speaker 1: know someone you love very much who is sick or
[5:14] Speaker 1: who is now in heaven. When you feel confused about that,
[5:18] Speaker 1: or maybe even frustrated and upset, remember Elijah, God's incredible
[5:24] Speaker 1: servant who was used to do great things. For reasons
[5:28] Speaker 1: we don't know, it was time for him to leave
[5:31] Speaker 1: the earth. But when God does something we don't understand,
[5:35] Speaker 1: we can trust that he is God and he is
[5:38] Speaker 1: all good. So his plan is always the best plan,
[5:43] Speaker 1: even if we don't understand it right now. But God
[5:47] Speaker 1: has promised that one day there will be no more sadness, tears,
[5:51] Speaker 1: or dying. Next, we heard about something strange Elisha asked
[5:56] Speaker 1: Jehosh to do. He said to open the window and
[6:00] Speaker 1: shoot an arrow out eastward. He told Jehosh that this
[6:05] Speaker 1: arrow was God's salvation and was a sign of the
[6:08] Speaker 1: victory Israel would have over their enemies in Syria. Jehoash
[6:13] Speaker 1: was worried that God's protection and help will leave Israel
[6:17] Speaker 1: with him when Elisha died. This was Elisha's way of
[6:22] Speaker 1: saying that as long as you have faith, God is
[6:24] Speaker 1: with you, and he represents the arrow that will strike
[6:28] Speaker 1: your enemies. We have enemies too, you know. Our enemies
[6:32] Speaker 1: aren't always people, though. Sometimes we are afraid of doing
[6:36] Speaker 1: something because we might fail. Other times we don't want
[6:40] Speaker 1: to do things that seem hard or too big. Just
[6:44] Speaker 1: like God was with Elisha, God is with you too.
[6:48] Speaker 1: And the great thing about being in God's family is
[6:51] Speaker 1: that when you feel like something is too hard or
[6:54] Speaker 1: too much, God can do it for you because he's
[6:58] Speaker 1: already strong enough. Paul talks about this in 2 Corinthians 12.
[7:04] Speaker 1: He says that it's actually a good thing when we
[7:07] Speaker 1: go through something hard. feel weak or not good enough.
[7:11] Speaker 1: Do you know why? Because Paul says that when we're weak,
[7:16] Speaker 1: God is strong in us. That's when we see his
[7:19] Speaker 1: power working in us best, when we just can't do
[7:23] Speaker 1: it without him. All right, let's get back to Elisha.
[7:27] Speaker 1: He tells Jehoash to grab more arrows and hit the
[7:31] Speaker 1: ground with them. But when Jehoash only hit the arrows
[7:36] Speaker 1: on the ground three times, Elijah said that was not
[7:39] Speaker 1: enough and that Israel would only win three battles because
[7:42] Speaker 1: of it. You see, Jehoash had faith to shoot the
[7:46] Speaker 1: first arrow, but when it came to the rest, he
[7:50] Speaker 1: was not very confident or bold. It's so important to
[7:54] Speaker 1: remember that when God asks you to do something that
[7:57] Speaker 1: feels big, when you do it, do it all the way.
[8:02] Speaker 1: Be strong and courageous and trust God to work in you.
[8:06] Speaker 1: At the end of today's story, Elisha died and was buried.
[8:10] Speaker 1: We heard about a man who was thrown in his
[8:13] Speaker 1: tomb and came back to life after touching Elisha's bones. Wow.
[8:19] Speaker 1: Just when you think God has finished working in someone's life,
[8:23] Speaker 1: he does something amazing. He was still using this great
[8:28] Speaker 1: prophet even in Elisha's grave. Thanks for listening today and
[8:32] Speaker 1: make sure you don't miss next time Someone is about
[8:35] Speaker 1: to be swallowed up by a big fish.
[8:39] Speaker 3: Do you know who it is?
[8:40] Speaker 1: And as always, remember this. The Bible is the best
[8:45] Speaker 1: story ever told. It's God's story to you. And it's
[8:50] Speaker 1: all true. Had a blast with our podcast? Share the
