[1:20] Speaker 2: Shunamite woman. In our last story, Alicia helped a widow,
[1:25] Speaker 2: cleansed food, and made an axe head float. In this story,
[1:30] Speaker 2: Elisha will tell a woman from Shunem that she will
[1:33] Speaker 2: have a son, and then later revive the son from death,
[1:38] Speaker 2: as inspired by 2 Kings.
[1:44] Speaker 1: Hi there, welcome back. This is Joya Sadler for listening
[1:47] Speaker 1: to the Kids Bible in the Air podcast. Today we're
[1:50] Speaker 1: going to spend some time with Elisha and the special
[1:54] Speaker 1: woman he meets along his journey. They will teach us
[1:57] Speaker 1: what it means to live differently, in a good way.
[2:01] Speaker 1: Let's dive in.
[2:05] Speaker 2: There came a day where Elisha went to Shunem, where
[2:08] Speaker 2: there was a powerful woman that asked him to have
[2:11] Speaker 2: a meal with her. So every time that Elisha passed
[2:14] Speaker 2: by her home, he stopped in to eat some food.
[2:18] Speaker 2: Elisha was coming by so much that the woman told
[2:20] Speaker 2: her husband, This is a man of God that comes
[2:24] Speaker 2: by often, who we need to make a room for.
[2:27] Speaker 2: Let's put a bed in there, a table and a chair,
[2:30] Speaker 2: and a lampstand, so that every time he comes, he
[2:33] Speaker 2: can just sleep over. One day, Alicia was staying at
[2:37] Speaker 2: the home of the Shumanite woman and said to Gehazi,
[2:40] Speaker 2: his servant, This woman has blessed us with great hospitality.
[2:45] Speaker 2: Please ask her if we can do anything for her.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Gehazi asked the woman, Is there anything that we can
[2:52] Speaker 2: do for you? No. I am just fine with the
[2:56] Speaker 2: family that I have. Gehazi told Alicia what she said
[3:00] Speaker 2: and they both knew they had to do something for her.
[3:04] Speaker 2: Gehazi then said, oh wait, she doesn't have a son. Gehazi,
[3:09] Speaker 2: go get the woman and have her stand at my doorway.
[3:13] Speaker 2: Alicia said to the woman, about this time next year,
[3:17] Speaker 2: you will have a son. She said, there's no way.
[3:22] Speaker 2: Please do not lead me into some fantasy world But
[3:25] Speaker 2: the woman became pregnant, and just about that same time
[3:29] Speaker 2: next year, she gave birth, just as Alicia had said.
[3:34] Speaker 2: The boy grew strong, until one day, he complained of
[3:37] Speaker 2: having an issue with his head. He went out to
[3:40] Speaker 2: his father, but there was nothing that could be done.
[3:44] Speaker 2: The boy died around noon of that day. The woman
[3:47] Speaker 2: took her lifeless boy and laid him on the bed
[3:50] Speaker 2: where Alicia slept. The woman said to her husband, Give
[3:54] Speaker 2: me one of the servants and a donkey so I
[3:57] Speaker 2: can find the man of God. She put a saddle
[4:00] Speaker 2: on the donkey and found Alicia at Mount Carmel. Alicia
[4:04] Speaker 2: saw the woman from a distance and sent Gehazi after
[4:07] Speaker 2: her to see if she was fine. The woman hid
[4:10] Speaker 2: her distress from Gehazi and continued towards the man of God.
[4:14] Speaker 2: When the woman got to Alicia, she fell down and
[4:16] Speaker 2: grabbed his feet. Gehazi tried to push her off of Alicia,
[4:20] Speaker 2: but Alicia said, Stop. This woman is in distress, and
[4:24] Speaker 2: the Lord has hidden it from me, and I have
[4:27] Speaker 2: to know why. The woman cried out, I told you
[4:31] Speaker 2: not to tell me that I would have a son
[4:33] Speaker 2: unless it was the truth. Elisha said to Gehazi, Take
[4:37] Speaker 2: this staff and place it on the boy's face. I
[4:41] Speaker 2: need you to run quickly and do not talk to
[4:43] Speaker 2: anyone while you are on your way. The woman said
[4:46] Speaker 2: to Elisha, As long as the Lord lives and as
[4:49] Speaker 2: long as you live, I will not leave you. Alicia
[4:52] Speaker 2: then followed the woman back to her house. Yehazi tried
[4:56] Speaker 2: to bring the boy back to life by placing the
[4:58] Speaker 2: staff on the face of the boy, but nothing happened.
[5:01] Speaker 2: When Alicia and the woman came into the house and
[5:03] Speaker 2: the boy was still dead on the bed, Alicia got
[5:06] Speaker 2: in the room and shut the door to keep the
[5:08] Speaker 2: others out. He prayed to the Lord and laid on
[5:12] Speaker 2: top of the body. He stretched his body out over
[5:15] Speaker 2: the boy with his eyes over the eyes of the boy,
[5:18] Speaker 2: his mouth over the mouth of the boy, and his
[5:20] Speaker 2: hands over the hands of the boy. boy became warm
[5:24] Speaker 2: but he was still not breathing alicia stood back up
[5:28] Speaker 2: and began pacing the room and then he laid on
[5:31] Speaker 2: the boy again all of a sudden the boy sneezed
[5:35] Speaker 2: seven times and started breathing again alicia called out to
[5:39] Speaker 2: ghazi tell the woman to get her son the woman
[5:43] Speaker 2: came into the room and fell at the feet of
[5:46] Speaker 2: alicia she then picked up her son and went out
[5:50] Speaker 2: of the room.
[5:57] Speaker 1: Wow, don't you love hearing stories of miracles? Our God
[6:01] Speaker 1: is so powerful. He really can do anything he chooses to.
[6:06] Speaker 1: As today's story opens, we meet a Shunammite woman. That
[6:11] Speaker 1: just means she was a woman and she was from
[6:14] Speaker 1: a place called Shunamm. This woman noticed something special about Elisha.
[6:20] Speaker 1: He seemed different. The Bible tells us that she perceived
[6:24] Speaker 1: that he was a holy man of God. In other words,
[6:28] Speaker 1: she had a strong feeling that God was with Elijah
[6:32] Speaker 1: and that he did what was right. Have you ever
[6:35] Speaker 1: noticed someone like that? Maybe it's a friend, a teacher,
[6:39] Speaker 1: a pastor, or even someone in your family. And there's
[6:43] Speaker 1: just something different about them. That person has a kindness
[6:47] Speaker 1: and a spirit about them that reminds you of Jesus.
[6:51] Speaker 1: Or better yet, maybe people see you that way. Wouldn't
[6:55] Speaker 1: it be great if someone told you, there's just something
[6:58] Speaker 1: different about you. I can see that you act the
[7:01] Speaker 1: way Jesus acts and loves others the way God does.
[7:06] Speaker 1: The older you get, the more you will come across
[7:08] Speaker 1: people who don't act very much like Christ. And sometimes
[7:12] Speaker 1: it's easy to start acting the way they do because
[7:16] Speaker 1: you just get used to seeing it every day. Lying,
[7:21] Speaker 1: saying words that are not holy, Making fun of someone
[7:25] Speaker 1: different from you, disobeying, cheating, are all just a few
[7:30] Speaker 1: examples of things we see others do and become tempted
[7:34] Speaker 1: to do ourselves. But we can learn something here from Elijah.
[7:39] Speaker 1: We can be different. We can act a whole other way.
[7:43] Speaker 1: A way that causes others to notice. In 1 Peter 2,
[7:48] Speaker 1: Peter says that yes, Some people will be disobedient and
[7:54] Speaker 1: not honor God. But he says we are called to
[7:58] Speaker 1: be different. He says we are part of God's royal family,
[8:03] Speaker 1: children of the one true king. We are set apart
[8:08] Speaker 1: by God to live holy and to do good things. Okay,
[8:12] Speaker 1: back to Elisha. This Shonamite woman offered Elisha a place
[8:17] Speaker 1: to stay and provided everything he needed. She had the
[8:22] Speaker 1: money to do this and was willing to spend it generously.
[8:26] Speaker 1: Not only can we learn something today from Elisha on
[8:30] Speaker 1: how to live set apart and different, but we learn
[8:34] Speaker 1: something from this woman too. God blessed her with money
[8:38] Speaker 1: and resources, and instead of keeping them all to herself,
[8:42] Speaker 1: she helped a man she knew was from God. So actually,
[8:45] Speaker 1: she was helping God. And did you know you can
[8:49] Speaker 1: do the same? There are all kinds of people around
[8:53] Speaker 1: you serving God. Some are teachers, some work at the church,
[8:58] Speaker 1: and some are even missionaries in faraway countries. And when
[9:02] Speaker 1: we help those people by serving with them or giving
[9:06] Speaker 1: them the things they need, it's like we join their
[9:09] Speaker 1: team and serve God together. Can you think of someone
[9:13] Speaker 1: you know who serves God for an actual job? Is
[9:17] Speaker 1: there something you can do to help them today? Here
[9:21] Speaker 1: are some ideas. Write them an encouraging note with a
[9:24] Speaker 1: Bible verse. Pray for their family and their protection. Offer
[9:29] Speaker 1: to help them somehow. Give them money or something they
[9:33] Speaker 1: may need. When you do, it will be like a
[9:36] Speaker 1: special gift you're giving God. Just like the Shunammite woman. Okay,
[9:42] Speaker 1: the rest of the story is pretty amazing. Because this
[9:47] Speaker 1: woman was so kind to Elisha, He wanted to do
[9:52] Speaker 1: something kind for her too. He asked God to give
[9:55] Speaker 1: her a son, something she wanted more than anything in
[9:59] Speaker 1: the world. But when her son was very sick, probably
[10:03] Speaker 1: from all the heat in the fields, he died. And
[10:07] Speaker 1: the woman knew just where to go. Elisha prayed and
[10:11] Speaker 1: prayed and then prayed some more. And finally, God brought
[10:15] Speaker 1: her son back to life. It's about as happy an
[10:19] Speaker 1: ending as you can get. That's all for today. Thanks
[10:22] Speaker 1: for listening and make sure you come back next time
[10:24] Speaker 1: as we meet our new friend, Naaman, and hear about
[10:28] Speaker 1: another pretty cool miracle. But for now, remember this. The
[10:33] Speaker 1: Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story
[10:37] Speaker 1: to you. And it's all true. If this podcast brought
[10:42] Speaker 1: you joy and seems like a valuable tool for kids
