[1:18] Speaker 2: The Legacy of Kings In our last story, the holy
[1:23] Speaker 2: man of Judah disobeyed the Lord. by eating at an
[1:27] Speaker 2: old prophet's house in Judah, and was killed by a lion.
[1:32] Speaker 2: In this story, we will learn about the fates of
[1:35] Speaker 2: Jeroboam's son as well as Rehoboam and Jeroboam, as inspired
[1:41] Speaker 2: by 1 Kings.
[1:47] Speaker 1: Hi everyone, it's Joyous Adler again. Thanks for stopping by
[1:51] Speaker 1: for the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Endurance Have
[1:56] Speaker 1: you ever heard of that? That's what we're talking about today.
[1:59] Speaker 1: And we finish out the reigns of Jeroboam and Rehoboam.
[2:05] Speaker 1: Finishing strong matters. So let's see what we learn from
[2:10] Speaker 1: today's story.
[2:14] Speaker 2: Jeroboam was distraught because his son was profoundly ill. There
[2:19] Speaker 2: was one whom he could turn, the prophet of the
[2:23] Speaker 2: Lord who lives in Shiloh. He went to his wife
[2:27] Speaker 2: and told her of the prophet who told him that
[2:30] Speaker 2: he was to be king. Take these gifts of food
[2:34] Speaker 2: and ask what will become of our son. Go in
[2:37] Speaker 2: disguise so he will not know that you are my wife.
[2:41] Speaker 2: The prophet was frail and losing vision in his old age,
[2:45] Speaker 2: yet the Lord still spoke to him. Before Jeroboam's wife arrived,
[2:50] Speaker 2: he was warned that she was coming in disguise. Then
[2:54] Speaker 2: the Lord gave him words to talk to her. As
[2:58] Speaker 2: she approached, she was shocked to hear the prophet address her.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why must you disguise yourself?
[3:08] Speaker 2: God has a message for your husband, though you will
[3:12] Speaker 2: not like it. The Lord says, I choose you, an
[3:17] Speaker 2: average man, to give the kingdom when I tore it
[3:21] Speaker 2: away from the family of David. You have disgraced me.
[3:25] Speaker 2: You have turned away from my commandments. Instead, you insult
[3:30] Speaker 2: me with two golden calves, and you have become more
[3:34] Speaker 2: wicked than anyone else. Listen well to what will happen
[3:38] Speaker 2: to your line. All your males will die a horrible death,
[3:44] Speaker 2: and the name Jeroboam will not continue after you're gone.
[3:48] Speaker 2: The cities will die out, and the countryside will be demolished.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Yet I will make one exception for your sick son.
[3:58] Speaker 2: He is a good man and will die a normal death,
[4:02] Speaker 2: but it will be the moment you return home. He
[4:06] Speaker 2: will be buried and Israel will mourn. However, he will
[4:11] Speaker 2: be the only one of the family to be buried.
[4:16] Speaker 2: All of this is the fruit of what became of Israel.
[4:21] Speaker 4: His sin will force me to strike Israel so hard
[4:25] Speaker 4: that their roots will be ripped up from the soil
[4:28] Speaker 4: and my people will be carried away and scattered among nations.
[4:34] Speaker 4: Jeroboam's wife was in shock as she heard this, but
[4:38] Speaker 4: she knew she must return home with the message. She
[4:41] Speaker 4: took off with a heaviness on her heart, knowing that
[4:45] Speaker 4: her son would die upon her arrival. Nevertheless, she returned
[4:50] Speaker 4: home Upon her return, it was as the Lord had
[4:55] Speaker 4: said through the prophet, and their son passed away from
[4:59] Speaker 4: sickness immediately. All the people of Israel cried when he
[5:03] Speaker 4: was buried. As it was, Jeroboam ruled for twenty-two years
[5:09] Speaker 4: before passing away.
[5:11] Speaker 2: His son became the next king and followed his father's
[5:14] Speaker 2: ways and only ruled two years. He was killed. And
[5:19] Speaker 2: with this death also came the destruction of the family
[5:23] Speaker 2: of Jeroboam, just as the prophet had said. All the
[5:28] Speaker 2: years that Jeroboam and Rehoboam lived, Israel and Judah were
[5:33] Speaker 2: at war. Rehoboam died after being the ruler of Judah
[5:37] Speaker 2: for 17 years. Upon his passing, his son took over
[5:42] Speaker 2: for him as the new king of Judah.
[5:49] Speaker 1: Okay, today we wrap up the lives of Jeroboam and Rehoboam,
[5:55] Speaker 1: or as we've been calling them, JB and RB. And
[5:59] Speaker 1: like we just heard, they have a sad ending. Why?
[6:05] Speaker 1: Because sin always brings sadness. More about that in a minute.
[6:11] Speaker 1: We heard today that JB's son was very sick and
[6:15] Speaker 1: things were not going well for him. According to a
[6:18] Speaker 1: familiar prophet of God, it was because of J.B. 's sin.
[6:24] Speaker 1: He had been living in total disobedience from God and
[6:28] Speaker 1: had turned completely away from the ways of God. Because
[6:33] Speaker 1: of this, the kingdom would be ripped away from him
[6:37] Speaker 1: and many people would have to die. Let's stop here
[6:41] Speaker 1: for a moment. God doesn't want J.B. 's son to die,
[6:46] Speaker 1: does he? God wants his children to love him and
[6:51] Speaker 1: follow his ways. And as we've talked about before, we
[6:56] Speaker 1: can't always understand the ways of God. We just have
[7:00] Speaker 1: to trust him. So J.B. 's son dies. And after
[7:05] Speaker 1: 22 years as king, his kingdom is destroyed. And then
[7:11] Speaker 1: Jeroboam dies. And after R.B. rules Judah, the southern kingdom.
[7:20] Speaker 1: Sounds like a bit of a mess, right? And do
[7:28] Speaker 1: you know why? David, Solomon, Jeroboam, Rehoboam, many of these
[7:35] Speaker 1: kings had a very hard time doing what was right
[7:40] Speaker 1: until the end of their lives. Some of them started
[7:43] Speaker 1: off great and ended in disobedience to God. Others started
[7:49] Speaker 1: off on the wrong foot but ended their reign faithful
[7:52] Speaker 1: to God. Why was it so hard? And why couldn't
[7:57] Speaker 1: they have done the right thing all the time? Because
[8:02] Speaker 1: as we know, all people sin. And sin never leads
[8:06] Speaker 1: to the life God wants for you. It separates you
[8:10] Speaker 1: from God and it brings sadness. That's why God's Word
[8:15] Speaker 1: talks a lot about having endurance. That means doing the
[8:20] Speaker 1: right thing over and over again, even when you get
[8:25] Speaker 1: tired of it and want to give up. Now, we
[8:29] Speaker 1: know that God forgives our sins, right? And we know
[8:34] Speaker 1: that we will never be perfect, yes? But finishing strong
[8:39] Speaker 1: honors God. And it blesses the people in our families
[8:43] Speaker 1: who come after us. The best example of endurance comes from,
[8:48] Speaker 1: of course, you guessed it, Jesus himself. Hebrews 12, 2 says,
[8:57] Speaker 1: Looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who
[9:02] Speaker 1: for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,
[9:06] Speaker 1: despising its shame, and has sat down at the right
[9:11] Speaker 1: hand of the throne of God. Jesus faced some hard
[9:15] Speaker 1: things in his life on earth, but probably nothing harder
[9:19] Speaker 1: than his final days. His friends had deserted him. He
[9:23] Speaker 1: was misunderstood, beaten, tortured, and asked to carry the weight
[9:29] Speaker 1: of all the sin of the world. The night before
[9:33] Speaker 1: he died, as he was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane,
[9:37] Speaker 1: He even asked God if there was any other way.
[9:42] Speaker 1: This was so hard and it felt like too much
[9:45] Speaker 1: to bear. Surely Satan was tempting him in those moments
[9:50] Speaker 1: to just give up. You made it this far, Jesus.
[9:53] Speaker 1: You shouldn't have to die. But of course, that isn't
[9:58] Speaker 1: how the story goes. regardless of how hard it was
[10:02] Speaker 1: or how much he was tempted to quit and go
[10:05] Speaker 1: his own way Jesus finished his life in obedience and
[10:10] Speaker 1: faithfulness to the father he said it's not what I
[10:14] Speaker 1: want God it's what you want And with the strength
[10:19] Speaker 1: of His Spirit inside of us, we can do the same.
[10:23] Speaker 1: The Bible says that we're under no obligation to the flesh.
[10:29] Speaker 1: We do not have to do the wrong thing if
[10:32] Speaker 1: we're Christians. We have the power to obey God and
[10:36] Speaker 1: do the right thing, even when it's hard. And when
[10:40] Speaker 1: we do that, the Bible says God gives us rewards.
[10:45] Speaker 1: Sometimes on earth, but always in heaven. It's always worth
[10:51] Speaker 1: it to do the right thing. We can run our
[10:54] Speaker 1: race with endurance. That means never giving up. We can
[10:58] Speaker 1: look to the example of Jesus. We can obey when
[11:02] Speaker 1: it's hard, keep going when we want to quit, and
[11:06] Speaker 1: follow him when no one else does. And even when
[11:10] Speaker 1: we do mess up and we do sin, we can
[11:14] Speaker 1: go immediately back to God and start over again. He's
[11:19] Speaker 1: never mad at us, and He always welcomes us and
[11:23] Speaker 1: always wants us back. So how can we do this?
[11:28] Speaker 1: With God's strength. And the more we obey, the easier
[11:33] Speaker 1: it gets to do the right thing. Thanks for listening today.
[11:38] Speaker 1: Next time, we're going to meet a man named Azza.
[11:41] Speaker 1: who stopped trusting God and tried to handle things his way.
[11:46] Speaker 1: Bet you can guess how that turned out. Okay, it's
[11:50] Speaker 1: time for our close. Are you ready? Say it with
