[1:15] Speaker 4: Raising Lazarus In our last story, we learned a few
[1:21] Speaker 4: stories about how we are to relate to God.
[1:24] Speaker 1: In terms of praise, prayer, and humility.
[1:28] Speaker 4: In this story, we will learn about how Jesus raises
[1:31] Speaker 4: his friend Lazarus from the dead, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:40] Speaker 1: Hi friends, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:44] Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I
[1:47] Speaker 1: am so glad you're here for this very special story. Today,
[1:52] Speaker 1: Jesus is going to teach us something new about who
[1:54] Speaker 1: he is. And he's going to do the greatest miracle yet.
[1:59] Speaker 1: So get ready, lean in, and listen close.
[2:04] Speaker 4: In a town called Bethany, there lived a man named
[2:07] Speaker 4: Lazarus and his sisters named Mary and Martha. This town
[2:13] Speaker 4: was very close to the big city of Jerusalem. This
[2:16] Speaker 4: is the same Mary that had put ointment on Jesus'
[2:19] Speaker 4: feet and wiped it with her hair. So when her
[2:23] Speaker 4: brother Lazarus got ill, they went to Jesus for help.
[2:28] Speaker 4: When the sisters got to Jesus, they warned him that
[2:31] Speaker 4: his friend whom he loved had become very sick and
[2:34] Speaker 4: needed his help. But Jesus waited a couple of days
[2:37] Speaker 4: before going to see Lazarus. When he was ready to go,
[2:41] Speaker 4: he announced to his disciples that they were leaving. The
[2:45] Speaker 4: disciples were hesitant because they knew that there were some
[2:48] Speaker 4: Jews there that wanted Jesus dead. Jesus did not listen
[2:53] Speaker 4: to them and told them, I must go wake Lazarus.
[2:57] Speaker 4: When the disciples heard this, they told him, let him sleep.
[3:02] Speaker 2: He is sick.
[3:02] Speaker 4: It will not help him. Jesus hearing this replied, Lazarus
[3:07] Speaker 4: is dead. Now I am going to raise him to
[3:11] Speaker 4: life and you will believe in me. When Thomas, one
[3:15] Speaker 4: of Jesus' disciples heard this, he said, well, We might
[3:20] Speaker 4: as well go die with him. When Jesus and his
[3:23] Speaker 4: disciples had shown up, Lazarus had been dead in his.
[3:27] Speaker 2: Tomb for four days.
[3:29] Speaker 4: Many people of the surrounding area came to comfort Martha
[3:32] Speaker 4: and Mary for their loss. Martha and Mary heard that
[3:36] Speaker 4: Jesus was coming. Mary remained where she was and decided
[3:40] Speaker 4: to not go see Jesus. Martha left to go confront Jesus.
[3:45] Speaker 4: When Martha came to Jesus, she said to him, Jesus.
[3:49] Speaker 4: If you would have been here, you could have saved
[3:51] Speaker 4: my brother. But even now, you can do all things.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Jesus looked at her and said, Your brother will live again.
[4:00] Speaker 4: He continued to speak and said, I am the resurrection
[4:03] Speaker 4: and the life. If you believe in me, even if
[4:06] Speaker 4: you die, you shall live.
[4:09] Speaker 2: Whoever believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?
[4:14] Speaker 4: Martha heard this and said, Yes, Lord. I believe you,
[4:18] Speaker 4: I believe you are the Son of God. Martha, after
[4:22] Speaker 4: this conversation, went and got her sister and privately told her,
[4:26] Speaker 4: Jesus is here and wants to speak with you. Mary
[4:30] Speaker 4: got up and went to go see Jesus. When Mary left,
[4:34] Speaker 4: the Jews that were with her started to follow her
[4:36] Speaker 4: because they thought she was going to her brother's tomb.
[4:40] Speaker 4: When Mary got to Jesus, her emotions got the best
[4:42] Speaker 4: of her and she fell to her knees at Jesus' feet.
[4:46] Speaker 4: She said to him, If you had been here, you
[4:50] Speaker 4: could have saved my brother. Jesus stood there and saw
[4:55] Speaker 4: how sad she was and the Jews with her. He
[4:59] Speaker 4: was deeply moved by all this and asked them where
[5:03] Speaker 4: Lazarus was. They led him to where Lazarus was buried.
[5:07] Speaker 4: When Jesus got to the place where Lazarus was, he wept.
[5:10] Speaker 4: Some of the people there saw how much Jesus was
[5:13] Speaker 4: moved and said, Look at how much he loves his friend.
[5:17] Speaker 4: Some of the Jews spoke to each other and said,
[5:20] Speaker 4: This is the man that healed the blind.
[5:23] Speaker 2: Why did he not save Lazarus?
[5:25] Speaker 4: Jesus' emotions were moved again, and he asked for the
[5:28] Speaker 4: stone of Lazarus' tomb to be moved away. Martha warned
[5:32] Speaker 4: Jesus about the odor that there would be if they
[5:36] Speaker 4: moved the stone away. Jesus reminded her that God's glory
[5:40] Speaker 4: would be shown. So they finally moved away the stone,
[5:44] Speaker 4: and the stone was rolled away. Jesus looked up to
[5:47] Speaker 4: the heavens and said a prayer to his father. Jesus
[5:51] Speaker 4: said this, Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
[5:57] Speaker 3: You always hear me.
[6:00] Speaker 4: Show your glory to these people around me that you
[6:03] Speaker 4: sent me. After this, Jesus spoke loudly and boldly, Lazarus,
[6:09] Speaker 4: come out. At that moment, the man that had been
[6:12] Speaker 4: dead for days came out of the tomb. Lazarus was
[6:17] Speaker 4: still covered in what he was buried in. Jesus told
[6:20] Speaker 4: the onlookers to unbind him and let him go. Many
[6:25] Speaker 4: of the Jews that were there that day believed what
[6:28] Speaker 4: they saw. When the religious leaders heard this story, they
[6:32] Speaker 4: agreed that they had to kill Jesus. Too many people
[6:36] Speaker 4: were starting to believe in him. They also wanted Lazarus
[6:40] Speaker 4: dead because his story of being alive was causing many
[6:44] Speaker 4: people to.
[6:45] Speaker 2: Turn That was amazing.
[6:56] Speaker 1: We heard today how Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were some
[7:00] Speaker 1: of Jesus' closest friends. The Bible tells us that he
[7:04] Speaker 1: would often stay at their house when passing through the
[7:07] Speaker 1: town of Bethany near Jerusalem. So when these sisters told
[7:11] Speaker 1: Jesus their brother Lazarus was very sick and might die,
[7:15] Speaker 1: they probably thought he would rush right over. But as
[7:19] Speaker 1: we heard today, that didn't exactly happen. In fact, Jesus stayed.
[7:25] Speaker 2: Where he was for two more days.
[7:28] Speaker 1: Two whole days!
[7:30] Speaker 2: Why do you think he did that?
[7:32] Speaker 1: Perhaps it was because the people already knew that Jesus
[7:35] Speaker 1: could heal. They had seen him do it time and
[7:38] Speaker 1: time again. Just maybe Jesus wanted to teach them something.
[7:42] Speaker 2: New about who he was.
[7:45] Speaker 1: Just maybe he wanted them to know he was even
[7:48] Speaker 1: more than they could ever hope or dream.
[7:51] Speaker 2: Okay, so the disciples.
[7:53] Speaker 1: Were afraid of going anywhere near Jerusalem because they knew
[7:56] Speaker 1: by now many Jews wanted Jesus dead. But Jesus told
[8:01] Speaker 1: them he was going away. He said that Lazarus was dead,
[8:04] Speaker 1: but he would raise him up.
[8:07] Speaker 2: They must have been.
[8:08] Speaker 1: Thinking, hmm, this is going to be good. When they
[8:12] Speaker 1: arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in a tomb for
[8:16] Speaker 1: four whole days. And everyone was still crying.
[8:20] Speaker 2: A lot.
[8:22] Speaker 1: The friends and family of Lazarus missed him so deeply
[8:25] Speaker 1: and just couldn't understand why Jesus didn't fix it when
[8:28] Speaker 1: he had first heard about it. Leave it to Martha
[8:32] Speaker 1: to run to Jesus and say.
[8:33] Speaker 2: Why didn't you do anything?
[8:35] Speaker 1: You could have healed him.
[8:37] Speaker 2: Now he is dead.
[8:40] Speaker 1: Jesus told her that Lazarus would live again, but she
[8:43] Speaker 1: thought he meant in heaven one day. That's when Jesus
[8:47] Speaker 1: makes one of the most important statements in all the Bible.
[8:51] Speaker 2: Do you know what it is?
[8:51] Speaker 1: He said, Jesus was not saying that he had the
[8:54] Speaker 1: power to make Lazarus alive again. He was saying that
[9:06] Speaker 1: he was the power.
[9:08] Speaker 2: He didn't just give life to Lazarus.
[9:10] Speaker 1: He was the life. Next, Jesus asked Martha a super
[9:15] Speaker 1: important question. It's a question all of God's children have
[9:19] Speaker 1: to answer at some point. Jesus looked deep into Martha's
[9:23] Speaker 1: eyes and asked, Do you believe this?
[9:26] Speaker 2: She did.
[9:28] Speaker 1: But it's a good thing to think about today. What
[9:30] Speaker 1: would you say if someone asked you, Do you really
[9:33] Speaker 1: believe Jesus can do anything? Do you believe he is
[9:37] Speaker 1: God's son, your friend, and can give you life forever
[9:41] Speaker 1: in heaven? Maybe today you can quietly tell Jesus in
[9:45] Speaker 1: your heart, Lord, I believe. Not because my parents, friends, teachers,
[9:52] Speaker 1: or pastors believe, but.
[9:54] Speaker 2: Because I believe.
[9:56] Speaker 1: That's an amazing thing to tell God. I bet if
[10:00] Speaker 1: you do, you will even sense or feel him smiling
[10:04] Speaker 1: down on you. As the story continues, Martha brings her
[10:07] Speaker 1: sister Mary.
[10:08] Speaker 2: To Jesus, and she is a wreck.
[10:11] Speaker 1: She is loudly crying and falling at his feet, saying
[10:14] Speaker 1: the same thing as everyone.
[10:15] Speaker 2: If only you would come. This is when we see the.
[10:20] Speaker 1: Soft, loving, compassionate, tender heart of Jesus. The Bible tells
[10:25] Speaker 1: us he was moved and began to cry when he
[10:27] Speaker 1: saw his friends sobbing and arrived at the tomb. Then
[10:32] Speaker 1: we read something.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Else in this passage.
[10:34] Speaker 1: It says that Jesus began to groan. The word in
[10:37] Speaker 1: the Greek language means that he didn't just feel sad
[10:40] Speaker 1: for his friends.
[10:41] Speaker 2: He felt angry. He was mad that.
[10:45] Speaker 1: Because of Satan... Death still had power on earth. Because
[10:50] Speaker 1: of Satan, his friends he loved so much were hurting
[10:54] Speaker 1: so deeply. I wonder if that moment, Jesus thought about
[10:58] Speaker 1: how he would soon get rid of that death and
[11:00] Speaker 1: pain forever. He would soon crush Satan for good. Well,
[11:06] Speaker 1: you know the end of the story.
[11:08] Speaker 2: Jesus told the people to move the stone. He told
[11:11] Speaker 2: Lazarus to come out. And out he came.
[11:15] Speaker 1: God's power and glory were shown in front of people
[11:18] Speaker 1: that day. And because of that, word would soon spread
[11:22] Speaker 1: and the religious leaders would be more determined than ever
[11:25] Speaker 1: to get rid of Jesus. The clock was ticking and
[11:28] Speaker 1: now there was no turning back. Thank you for being here.
[11:33] Speaker 1: Make sure to come back next time to hear about
[11:35] Speaker 1: what happened to a wee little man who climbed up
[11:38] Speaker 1: a tree. Do you know who it is? Don't forget,
[11:42] Speaker 1: the Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
[11:45] Speaker 1: story to you, and it's all true. Feel inspired by
