[1:16] Speaker 4: The first miracle. In our last story, Jesus was led
[1:21] Speaker 4: into the wilderness for 40 days.
[1:24] Speaker 2: To be tested. In this story... Jesus.
[1:27] Speaker 4: Will start to gain followers, and at a wedding, he
[1:31] Speaker 4: will turn water into wine, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:39] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler
[1:43] Speaker 1: with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am so
[1:46] Speaker 1: excited you're here today. In this story, we get to
[1:49] Speaker 1: hear what happened when people started discovering that Jesus was
[1:54] Speaker 1: the Messiah and the special way he introduced his coming kingdom.
[1:59] Speaker 2: Let's jump in.
[2:03] Speaker 4: John was preaching, as was normal, to a small group
[2:06] Speaker 4: of his disciples when he spotted Jesus walking by. John
[2:10] Speaker 4: pointed Jesus out to his disciples and said, That is Jesus,
[2:14] Speaker 4: the Lamb of God. This piqued the interest of some
[2:18] Speaker 4: of the disciples, and two of them went to follow
[2:21] Speaker 4: Jesus and spend the day with him. One of the
[2:24] Speaker 4: men's names was Andrew, and after the day he spent
[2:28] Speaker 4: with Jesus, he rushed to find his brother. He was
[2:31] Speaker 4: sure that Jesus was the Messiah. He ran home and
[2:35] Speaker 4: found his brother there, returning home for the day, and
[2:38] Speaker 4: Andrew blurted out,' Simon, we found the Messiah!' Simon was
[2:44] Speaker 4: confused but curious, so he agreed to go with his
[2:47] Speaker 4: brother the next morning to go with Jesus. The next
[2:51] Speaker 4: morning the brothers went to Jesus, and upon seeing Simon,
[2:55] Speaker 4: Jesus spoke, You are called Simon, but you will now
[3:00] Speaker 4: be called Peter. Peter had no idea how to react,
[3:04] Speaker 4: so he went along with it. They traveled for the day.
[3:08] Speaker 4: And after listening to Jesus speak, Peter was convinced that
[3:12] Speaker 4: this was the Messiah. The next morning as they were traveling,
[3:16] Speaker 4: Jesus found a man named Philip and simply said, Follow me.
[3:21] Speaker 4: Philip had heard talk around town of this Jesus and
[3:25] Speaker 4: was ecstatic that he was chosen to follow him. After
[3:29] Speaker 4: spending some time with Jesus, he too came to believe
[3:32] Speaker 4: that Jesus was the Messiah. He ran off to go
[3:36] Speaker 4: find his friend Nathanael and tell him that they found
[3:40] Speaker 4: the Messiah. Nathanael was skeptical when he heard about Jesus.
[3:46] Speaker 4: Jesus of Nazareth? Nothing good comes from Nazareth. But Philip
[3:51] Speaker 4: insisted that he come, and so he did. When Jesus
[3:55] Speaker 4: saw Nathanael coming, he stopped what he was discussing with
[3:58] Speaker 4: those around him and pointed him out, saying, Here is
[4:02] Speaker 4: a good man, a true Israelite, one with no hidden agenda.
[4:07] Speaker 4: Nathanael was shocked to be spoken of like this, for
[4:10] Speaker 4: he never remembered meeting Jesus, but Jesus continued. I saw
[4:15] Speaker 4: you under the fig tree before Philip spoke to you.
[4:18] Speaker 4: Once again, Nathanael was shocked. He said to Jesus, You
[4:22] Speaker 4: truly are the Son of God, the rightful King of Israel.
[4:27] Speaker 4: Jesus told him that this was only the beginning of
[4:30] Speaker 4: what he would see Jesus do. Jesus and his disciples
[4:35] Speaker 4: were invited to attend a wedding later that day. When
[4:38] Speaker 4: they got together at the party, and after the ceremony,
[4:41] Speaker 4: the reception was going on. It was a nice time
[4:44] Speaker 4: for all, but they had an issue. The host had
[4:48] Speaker 4: run out of wine. Mary, Jesus' mother, came to him
[4:52] Speaker 4: and told him the issue. Why do you come to
[4:55] Speaker 4: me with this? You know it is not my time,
[4:59] Speaker 4: Jesus said. But his mother thought nothing of it. and
[5:02] Speaker 4: told the servants,' Do whatever Jesus says.' Jesus spotted six
[5:07] Speaker 4: large pots, about 20 gallons each. He instructed them to
[5:12] Speaker 4: fill the pots with water. When they did it, he
[5:14] Speaker 4: then instructed them to take some water from the jugs
[5:17] Speaker 4: and bring it to the party manager. When the manager
[5:21] Speaker 4: of the feast received it, he drank from it and
[5:24] Speaker 4: claimed it was the best wine that he has ever
[5:27] Speaker 4: had at a party. He exclaimed,' Where have you been
[5:30] Speaker 4: hiding this?' Most hosts serve the best drinks at the
[5:33] Speaker 4: beginning and serve the cheaper stuff later. You saved the
[5:37] Speaker 4: best for last. This has been recorded as Jesus's first miracle.
[5:49] Speaker 3: Woohoo!
[5:50] Speaker 1: Today's story was fun, wasn't it? It was all about
[5:53] Speaker 1: the joy people felt when they met Jesus. One reason
[5:57] Speaker 1: for all that joy has to do with the name
[5:59] Speaker 1: Jesus's New Followers. Peter, Andrew, Philip, and Nathaniel kept calling him.
[6:05] Speaker 1: Do you remember what that name was? Yes, the Messiah.
[6:10] Speaker 1: You've heard the title before, haven't you? Messiah is a
[6:14] Speaker 1: Hebrew word that means anointed one.
[6:17] Speaker 2: Many of the.
[6:18] Speaker 1: Israel's prophets had told God's people about an anointed one
[6:22] Speaker 1: who would come and make everything that was wrong with
[6:25] Speaker 1: the world right again. You see, when Adam and Eve
[6:29] Speaker 1: first sinned, God promised them that one day someone special
[6:33] Speaker 1: would come and reverse the curse of sin. Then God
[6:37] Speaker 1: promised Abraham that this someone special would come from his
[6:41] Speaker 1: family and bless everyone in the whole world.
[6:45] Speaker 2: Later, God told Eli.
[6:47] Speaker 1: He'd send a true anointed priest who would have God's
[6:51] Speaker 1: heart and mind to serve forever and ever. And Nathan
[6:55] Speaker 1: told King David that someone special from his family would
[6:59] Speaker 1: be the anointed king whose kingdom would last forever and ever.
[7:04] Speaker 1: The anointed Messiah is the godly king in heaven. And
[7:08] Speaker 1: Daniel dreamed about the one who would rule over a
[7:11] Speaker 1: kingdom of people from every nation and language. And the
[7:16] Speaker 1: prophet Isaiah told Israel that the Messiah would heal broken
[7:20] Speaker 1: bodies and broken hearts. He would set people free.
[7:24] Speaker 2: Who felt trapped.
[7:26] Speaker 1: He would bring peace and hope and the greatest news
[7:29] Speaker 1: ever that the heavy veil which weighs on everyone on earth, death,
[7:34] Speaker 1: would finally be taken away and no one would be
[7:38] Speaker 1: sad again, ever. No wonder Peter, Andrew, Philip, Nathaniel, and
[7:44] Speaker 1: everyone else were so excited that Jesus might be the Messiah.
[7:49] Speaker 1: In fact, did you know that you also called Jesus
[7:52] Speaker 1: the Messiah? The word Christ isn't just part of Jesus' name.
[7:58] Speaker 1: It's the Greek word for Messiah. Today when you say
[8:02] Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, you're referring with all Jesus followers that he
[8:07] Speaker 1: is the Messiah. And since Jesus was the Messiah, he
[8:12] Speaker 1: could have announced that any way he wanted to. He
[8:15] Speaker 1: could have shown that God's kingdom is powerful because it is.
[8:21] Speaker 1: Or that God's kingdom is fair.
[8:23] Speaker 2: Because it is.
[8:25] Speaker 1: Or that God's kingdom has authority over every other kingdom
[8:29] Speaker 1: on earth.
[8:30] Speaker 2: Because it does.
[8:32] Speaker 1: But instead, he showed everyone that God's kingdom is generous.
[8:37] Speaker 1: You see, Isaiah had also said that when the Messiah's
[8:41] Speaker 1: kingdom comes, he will feed everyone with the very best
[8:46] Speaker 1: food and the very, very best wine. Do you remember
[8:50] Speaker 1: what happened at the wedding? Jesus and his followers were
[8:53] Speaker 1: invited to a wedding. That means people liked Jesus and
[8:57] Speaker 1: wanted to hang out with him.
[8:59] Speaker 2: He was fun.
[9:00] Speaker 1: And it wasn't just that people liked Jesus. He liked
[9:04] Speaker 1: them too. He enjoyed talking, listening, and laughing with people.
[9:09] Speaker 1: And because he liked the bride and groom, when the
[9:12] Speaker 1: wine ran out at their wedding, Jesus' mom knew that
[9:15] Speaker 1: he could take what was wrong and make it right again.
[9:19] Speaker 1: She had seen her son's generous heart before, and she
[9:23] Speaker 1: knew he wouldn't want the new couple to be embarrassed
[9:26] Speaker 1: on their special day. Celebrations and joy have always been
[9:30] Speaker 1: important to God, so they were important to Jesus too.
[9:35] Speaker 2: And she was right.
[9:37] Speaker 1: Even though Jesus wasn't sure he was ready to tell
[9:40] Speaker 1: everyone he was the Messiah, he still obeyed his mom,
[9:44] Speaker 1: and he let his secret out in the most wonderful way.
[9:48] Speaker 1: You see, Amos has also given a prophecy that when
[9:51] Speaker 1: the time of the Messiah had come, sweet wine would
[9:55] Speaker 1: drip from the mountains and flow from the hills.
[9:59] Speaker 2: So Jesus didn't Enough to make.
[10:15] Speaker 1: Everybody's joy that day drip down the mountains and flow
[10:19] Speaker 1: from the hills. I am so happy you joined me today.
