[1:19] Speaker 3: You without sin cast the first stone in our last story.
[1:25] Speaker 3: Jesus taught how he is the true bread of life.
[1:30] Speaker 3: In this story, Jesus will frustrate the religious leaders as
[1:34] Speaker 3: he continues to preach and call people to obedience. He
[1:39] Speaker 3: will also forgive the woman who is caught in adultery,
[1:44] Speaker 3: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:50] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:54] Speaker 1: Welcome back for another story from the Kids Bible in
[1:57] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. Things are getting tense in Jerusalem, and
[2:02] Speaker 1: the Jewish leaders are not happy. Today, we'll hear Jesus
[2:06] Speaker 1: offer us what he calls living water, and we'll meet
[2:10] Speaker 1: a woman who, thanks to Jesus, will never be the same.
[2:15] Speaker 1: Let's listen in.
[2:18] Speaker 3: Jesus came to Galilee but had to be very careful
[2:22] Speaker 3: because some religious leaders wanted to kill him. But it
[2:26] Speaker 3: was around the time for the Jewish festival of tabernacles.
[2:30] Speaker 3: His brothers said, Go to Judea and get away from
[2:34] Speaker 3: Galilee so your disciples can see your miracles. You shouldn't
[2:39] Speaker 3: keep your miracles in private and hide it from others.
[2:43] Speaker 3: You need to show yourself off to other people. At
[2:47] Speaker 3: that time, His brothers did not truly believe in who
[2:51] Speaker 3: he was. Jesus told them, It is not yet my time.
[2:57] Speaker 3: The world hates me because they think that what I
[2:59] Speaker 3: am doing is evil. His brothers warned him not to
[3:03] Speaker 3: stay in Galilee, but he went ahead and left for
[3:06] Speaker 3: the festival after his brothers had already headed there. People
[3:11] Speaker 3: at the festival were looking all over for Jesus. Some
[3:15] Speaker 3: people said, He is a good man. But others said, No,
[3:20] Speaker 3: he lies and tricks people. During the festival, Jesus went
[3:25] Speaker 3: to the temple and started to teach. The people were
[3:29] Speaker 3: amazed at his teaching and wondered how he had all
[3:32] Speaker 3: this knowledge. The crowd realized that this is the man
[3:37] Speaker 3: the religious leaders were trying to kill. Some sent for
[3:41] Speaker 3: the religious leaders, and then the guards came looking for him.
[3:45] Speaker 3: Jesus spoke to the people and said, I am only
[3:49] Speaker 3: here with you for a small amount of time. Then
[3:52] Speaker 3: I am going back to the one who sent me here.
[3:57] Speaker 3: You will try to look for me, but you will
[3:59] Speaker 3: not be able to see me. You will not be
[4:03] Speaker 3: able to come to where I am. People were confused
[4:07] Speaker 3: by what Jesus had said. They asked, where is he
[4:11] Speaker 3: going and why will we not be able to see him?
[4:15] Speaker 3: Why will we not be able to come? Not even
[4:18] Speaker 3: the guards were able to arrest him because they were
[4:22] Speaker 3: listening to his teachings. On the last day of the festival,
[4:26] Speaker 3: Jesus said, People said after this, Others said, No, he
[4:30] Speaker 3: is the Messiah. When the guards returned to the religious leaders,
[4:50] Speaker 3: they were asked, Why did you not bring him? They replied,
[4:55] Speaker 3: This man speaks unlike any other man. Early the next day,
[5:01] Speaker 3: the religious leaders brought a woman who was in sin
[5:04] Speaker 3: to Jesus. They wanted to trap him, and so they
[5:08] Speaker 3: said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught sinning. The
[5:13] Speaker 3: law of Moses says that we are to stone her.
[5:17] Speaker 3: What do you think we should do? Jesus did not answer,
[5:22] Speaker 3: but he bent down and wrote on the ground with
[5:25] Speaker 3: his finger. The religious leaders kept asking questions until Jesus
[5:29] Speaker 3: finally answered. He said, You without sin can cast the
[5:35] Speaker 3: first stone. One by one, all the leaders dropped their
[5:41] Speaker 3: stones and left, from the oldest to the youngest. Jesus
[5:46] Speaker 3: said to the woman, Woman, has no one condemned you?
[5:52] Speaker 3: She answered, No. He then said, I do not condemn you.
[5:58] Speaker 3: Go and live a life free of sin.
[6:08] Speaker 2: What a story!
[6:11] Speaker 1: Can't you just hear those stones dropping on the ground?
[6:15] Speaker 1: There's a lot to talk about today. As we open,
[6:18] Speaker 1: things are busy and crowded in Jerusalem because all the
[6:23] Speaker 1: Jews are coming into town for a big party. It
[6:27] Speaker 1: was called the Feast of the Booths, a festival they
[6:30] Speaker 1: celebrated every year to remember how God provided for them
[6:34] Speaker 1: during their 40 years in the wilderness. At this festival,
[6:40] Speaker 1: the Jews would stay in temporary shelters or booths for
[6:43] Speaker 1: the week bringing their offerings and sacrifices to the temple.
[6:48] Speaker 1: But that wasn't all that was happening. Things were stirring
[6:52] Speaker 1: because many Jewish leaders were looking for Jesus and wanted
[6:57] Speaker 1: to kill him. They didn't like all this talk about
[7:00] Speaker 1: being a king or godson or whatever else they had heard.
[7:04] Speaker 1: They were angry, jealous, and didn't believe a word he said.
[7:10] Speaker 1: The Bible tells us here that even the brothers of
[7:14] Speaker 1: Jesus did not believe in him at this point. His
[7:17] Speaker 1: own brothers. How lonely Jesus must have felt. Jesus went
[7:23] Speaker 1: to the temple as this festival began and started teaching
[7:27] Speaker 1: the people. Many of them did believe in him. But
[7:31] Speaker 1: they just couldn't understand exactly what he was saying. Why
[7:35] Speaker 1: is he going to go away? And why can't we come?
[7:38] Speaker 1: The Bible says that even the guards that were sent
[7:41] Speaker 1: to arrest him were so amazed by his teaching. Jesus
[7:45] Speaker 1: told the people that they could come to him and
[7:48] Speaker 1: drink and that if they believed in him, there would
[7:51] Speaker 1: be a river of water flowing through them that never stopped. Now,
[7:57] Speaker 1: just like the bread we talked about last time, this
[8:00] Speaker 1: was not actual water. It was life. Jesus was saying,
[8:04] Speaker 1: I can give you this amazing joy and purpose. that
[8:07] Speaker 1: will last forever, and all you have to do is
[8:11] Speaker 1: come to me and ask for it. It seemed too
[8:15] Speaker 1: good to be true, but it wasn't. Then we heard
[8:19] Speaker 1: about the Pharisees interrupting Jesus' teaching to bring a woman
[8:23] Speaker 1: to him. This woman had been doing things that were
[8:27] Speaker 1: very wrong, and everyone knew it. She had a bad
[8:31] Speaker 1: reputation and was not living the way God says to live.
[8:36] Speaker 1: The leaders told Jesus that according to Jewish law, they
[8:40] Speaker 1: were allowed to throw stones at her for what she did.
[8:45] Speaker 1: If Jesus said, okay, you can, they would be breaking
[8:49] Speaker 1: the Roman law and the Romans were the ones in charge.
[8:53] Speaker 1: But if Jesus said not to stone her, he wouldn't
[8:56] Speaker 1: be following the law of Moses, the law of the Jews.
[9:01] Speaker 1: Either way, they thought this was their chance to trick
[9:05] Speaker 1: them and arrest him, getting rid of him for good.
[9:09] Speaker 1: And not to mention, they were acting very self-righteous. That
[9:14] Speaker 1: means they acted like they were perfect and so much
[9:17] Speaker 1: better than this woman. It's as if she deserved all
[9:21] Speaker 1: the punishment in the world and they deserve to be rewarded.
[9:26] Speaker 1: By the way, we can act self-righteous sometimes too. When
[9:30] Speaker 1: we focus too much on someone else's sin instead of
[9:33] Speaker 1: the things that we are doing... We act just like
[9:36] Speaker 1: the Pharisees. Jesus wants us to look inside our own
[9:41] Speaker 1: hearts and worry about ourselves much more than we can
[9:44] Speaker 1: worry about what others are doing wrong. All right, so
[9:48] Speaker 1: how did Jesus respond? If we've learned anything from these stories,
[9:53] Speaker 1: it's that Jesus has his own special way of doing
[9:57] Speaker 1: things that sometimes surprise us. Instead of answering these leaders,
[10:03] Speaker 1: Jesus bent down and wrote something on the ground with
[10:06] Speaker 1: his finger. We're not even sure what Jesus wrote, but
[10:10] Speaker 1: John does tell us what he said. Okay, well, whichever
[10:14] Speaker 1: one of you never sins and is perfect, go ahead
[10:17] Speaker 1: and throw the first stone at her. Silence. They knew
[10:22] Speaker 1: they messed up this time. And as hard as they tried,
[10:26] Speaker 1: they weren't perfect. They couldn't keep all those laws all
[10:31] Speaker 1: the time. So they dropped their stones and walked away.
[10:36] Speaker 1: The last scene in this story is so special and powerful.
[10:40] Speaker 1: It's just Jesus and the woman left standing there. She
[10:44] Speaker 1: was probably so embarrassed and ashamed. And yet he looked
[10:48] Speaker 1: right into her eyes. After they talk about how all
[10:51] Speaker 1: the Pharisees left, he says, I don't condemn you either.
[10:56] Speaker 1: Go and sin no more. What did Jesus mean by that?
[11:01] Speaker 1: To condemn someone means to stay in front of everyone?
[11:04] Speaker 1: You're very wrong and bad and you deserve to be punished?
[11:08] Speaker 1: But even though Jesus said he was not going to
[11:11] Speaker 1: condemn her, we can't forget the last part of this statement.
[11:15] Speaker 1: He said that even though she was forgiven and loved
[11:18] Speaker 1: by him, she needed to stop doing wrong and instead
[11:22] Speaker 1: live her life in a way that was right. He
[11:25] Speaker 1: wanted her to stop sinning and trust in him. That's
[11:29] Speaker 1: the same thing he wants for us. Thank you for
[11:32] Speaker 1: listening to today's story. Next time Jesus is going to
[11:36] Speaker 1: put some mud in someone's eyes... but it's for a
[11:39] Speaker 1: good reason.
[11:40] Speaker 3: You'll see.
[11:41] Speaker 1: Okay, here we go. The Bible is the best story
[11:44] Speaker 1: ever told. It's God's story to you. And it's all true.
