[1:17] Speaker 3: John sees the end in our last story. Paul was
[1:22] Speaker 3: under house arrest in Rome and meeting with people and
[1:24] Speaker 3: writing letters. But there were others arrested for the sake
[1:28] Speaker 3: of the gospel. The apostle John had been exiled to
[1:31] Speaker 3: an island by Rome called Patmos. While John was there,
[1:36] Speaker 3: God showed him a vision of the future and told
[1:39] Speaker 3: him to write it down. This is the first part
[1:42] Speaker 3: of the vision John saw and wrote down, as inspired
[1:47] Speaker 3: by Revelation.
[1:52] Speaker 1: Hi everyone, it's Joy Sadler. Thank you for being here
[1:55] Speaker 1: for Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Have you ever
[1:58] Speaker 1: wondered what heaven is like? Well, we are going to
[2:02] Speaker 1: find out from the book of Revelation and it's going
[2:06] Speaker 1: to be amazing. You might want to close your eyes
[2:10] Speaker 1: as you listen to today's story so you can imagine
[2:13] Speaker 1: in your mind everything John is describing. All right, let's
[2:18] Speaker 1: jump in.
[2:22] Speaker 3: It was on the Lord's Day, and I, John, was
[2:25] Speaker 3: worshiping in the Spirit. I heard a voice like that
[2:28] Speaker 3: of a trumpet that said, I will show you things.
[2:31] Speaker 3: Write all of it on scrolls and send it to
[2:34] Speaker 3: the seven churches in Asia Minor. I, John, turned to see,
[2:39] Speaker 3: and I saw seven gold lampstands and the Son of
[2:43] Speaker 3: Man standing in the middle. The Son of Man had
[2:46] Speaker 3: eyes like flames and hair white like wool and feet
[2:50] Speaker 3: like polished bronze. and robe with gold sash across his chest.
[2:55] Speaker 3: He spoke, and a two-edged sword came out of his mouth,
[2:58] Speaker 3: and as his face was shining like the sun, he
[3:01] Speaker 3: was holding seven stars in his right hand. I, John,
[3:05] Speaker 3: fell to the ground, and I was told, Do not
[3:09] Speaker 3: be afraid. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
[3:12] Speaker 3: first and the last.
[3:14] Speaker 1: I am alive forever.
[3:16] Speaker 3: And I hold the keys of death and the grave.
[3:19] Speaker 3: Write these things happening now, and the things that will happen.
[3:25] Speaker 3: I wrote down instructions to the seven churches about the
[3:28] Speaker 3: things they were doing well and the areas they needed improvement.
[3:33] Speaker 3: Then I saw a door in heaven standing open, and
[3:36] Speaker 3: a voice said, Come up here. My spirit was in heaven,
[3:40] Speaker 3: and I saw a throne with someone sitting on it.
[3:43] Speaker 3: There was a rainbow and 24 elders on their own
[3:47] Speaker 3: thrones next to it, clothed in white and wearing gold crowns.
[3:52] Speaker 3: I saw these beings worshiping God at all times, crying out, Holy, holy,
[3:57] Speaker 3: holy is the Lord God Almighty. I saw a calm
[4:02] Speaker 3: sea like glass or crystal and seven torches, which were
[4:06] Speaker 3: the seven spirits of God. And then lightning and thunder occurred.
[4:11] Speaker 3: An angel asked, Who is worthy to break the seals
[4:15] Speaker 3: on this scroll and open it? I cried because no
[4:18] Speaker 3: one was able to. The angel said, Do not cry. Look,
[4:23] Speaker 3: the lion of the tribe of Judah has won the victory.
[4:27] Speaker 3: He is worthy to open the scroll. I, John, saw
[4:31] Speaker 3: a lamb looking as if it was just slain. And
[4:34] Speaker 3: the lamb opened the seals on the scrolls, which led
[4:37] Speaker 3: to different events on the earth. After everything was new,
[4:42] Speaker 3: a new heavens and a new earth. I saw the
[4:46] Speaker 3: holy city, the new Jerusalem coming from God out of heaven.
[4:50] Speaker 3: The city was beautiful. like a bride dressed for her husband.
[4:55] Speaker 3: I heard a voice saying, God is going to live
[4:58] Speaker 3: with his people. He will be their God, and they'll
[5:01] Speaker 3: be his people. He'll wipe away their tears. Those that
[5:05] Speaker 3: are not my children are full of hate and are cowards.
[5:09] Speaker 3: They have not worshipped me, but have worshipped the devil
[5:12] Speaker 3: or false gods. They have hated me in life, and
[5:16] Speaker 3: I will be graceful with them and send them to
[5:19] Speaker 3: the lake of fire. the second death, so they do
[5:23] Speaker 3: not have to spend eternity with me. Then an angel
[5:29] Speaker 3: gave me a closer look.
[5:37] Speaker 1: What a place. Can you believe you get to see
[5:40] Speaker 1: it for yourself one day? Let's talk about what we
[5:43] Speaker 1: heard from John. Like so many friends of Jesus, John
[5:47] Speaker 1: had suffered persecution because of his faith. He had been
[5:51] Speaker 1: sent to a deserted island called Patmos as a prisoner.
[5:56] Speaker 1: It's there that an angel came to him and gave
[5:59] Speaker 1: him this dream or vision. It's almost like the angel
[6:03] Speaker 1: was pulling back a curtain so that John could see
[6:07] Speaker 1: what heaven was like, what will happen in the future,
[6:11] Speaker 1: and how this whole story is going to end and
[6:14] Speaker 1: really begin. Why did the Lord want John to see this?
[6:20] Speaker 1: so he could write it down and we could all
[6:23] Speaker 1: read it, just like we're doing today. As you listened
[6:27] Speaker 1: to John describe Jesus, you may have imagined his eyes
[6:31] Speaker 1: like flames of fire and bright shiny white hair. But
[6:35] Speaker 1: some things, like lampstands, seals, and scrolls, might have been
[6:40] Speaker 1: a little confusing. So let's talk through some of these
[6:44] Speaker 1: things that Jesus showed John in his visions. John hears
[6:49] Speaker 1: a voice that sounds like a trumpet. It's the voice
[6:52] Speaker 1: of Jesus. He then sees seven gold lampstands and Jesus
[6:58] Speaker 1: standing in the middle of them. These lampstands represent the
[7:03] Speaker 1: seven main churches of Jesus in Asia. The light shining
[7:08] Speaker 1: was not from the lampstand. It was from the oil
[7:12] Speaker 1: in the lamp. In other words, the lampstands or churches
[7:16] Speaker 1: were used to shine the light of Jesus for all
[7:20] Speaker 1: to see. That sounds like church to me. Then John
[7:25] Speaker 1: sees Jesus, clothed like a king. He's respected, honored, and praised.
[7:31] Speaker 1: And he is standing there, caring for the lampstands or
[7:35] Speaker 1: the churches, making sure they are still shining bright. His
[7:40] Speaker 1: hair was white, which probably represents wisdom. And his eyes
[7:45] Speaker 1: were like fire. The eyes of Jesus can see into
[7:49] Speaker 1: any heart. His feet were brass. They had been through
[7:53] Speaker 1: the fire and were steady and strong. And his voice
[7:57] Speaker 1: had the power of a large waterfall. The seven stars
[8:02] Speaker 1: in his hands were the leaders of the churches. And
[8:05] Speaker 1: the sword coming out of the Lord's mouth was the
[8:08] Speaker 1: word of God. John also says that the face of
[8:12] Speaker 1: Jesus was as bright as the sun. In fact, when
[8:16] Speaker 1: John saw him, he couldn't even stand up. He fell
[8:20] Speaker 1: at the feet of Jesus, afraid. But Jesus said something
[8:25] Speaker 1: he has said to us many times through his journey.
[8:28] Speaker 1: Don't be afraid. It's me. You are safe. Well, John
[8:33] Speaker 1: wrote down some instructions from Jesus for these seven churches.
[8:37] Speaker 1: What they were doing right and what they needed to
[8:40] Speaker 1: do better. Then something really cool happened. Jesus called John
[8:46] Speaker 1: up to heaven and again his voice sounded like a trumpet.
[8:50] Speaker 1: This was a sign of what was to come. When
[8:53] Speaker 1: Jesus will one day call us to heaven, those of
[8:57] Speaker 1: us who have accepted Christ as our Savior. The Bible
[9:01] Speaker 1: says a trumpet will sound and we will meet Jesus
[9:04] Speaker 1: in the clouds. What a day that will be. While
[9:08] Speaker 1: there in heaven, he sees a throne. It seems like
[9:12] Speaker 1: he just wants to stare at it for a while.
[9:15] Speaker 1: It was the throne of God, surrounded by all the glory, majesty,
[9:19] Speaker 1: and power you can imagine. John didn't see a figure
[9:23] Speaker 1: or a person. He just describes the incredible light coming
[9:28] Speaker 1: from the throne. There was a rainbow, too, a reminder
[9:33] Speaker 1: of God's covenant promise to man. And descriptions of elders,
[9:38] Speaker 1: Old Testament heroes, angels, and saints. Next, as we close
[9:44] Speaker 1: our eyes, we hear John describe a sea that looked
[9:48] Speaker 1: like crystal or glass. One day we will see it
[9:52] Speaker 1: with our own eyes. This represents the word of God
[9:55] Speaker 1: that washed us and made us spotless and clean. John
[10:00] Speaker 1: then says he sees living creatures worshiping God day and night,
[10:05] Speaker 1: crying out, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
[10:12] Speaker 1: He sees a lamb that was slain opening some seals,
[10:16] Speaker 1: a new heaven and a brand new earth, And the
[10:19] Speaker 1: holy city of Jerusalem as a beautiful bride. And then
[10:23] Speaker 1: we hear such a wonderful promise. God is going to
[10:28] Speaker 1: live with his people now. He will be their God
[10:31] Speaker 1: and they will be his people. And he will wipe
[10:35] Speaker 1: away their tears. Is there a better promise in the world?
