[1:15] Speaker 3: In our last story, we learned about the two letters
[1:18] Speaker 3: Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica. In this story,
[1:23] Speaker 3: Paul will visit Corinth, and establish himself there for about
[1:27] Speaker 3: one year and a half, and then make his way
[1:30] Speaker 3: to Ephesus, as inspired by Acts.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Well, hi! It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:42] Speaker 1: with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am so
[1:45] Speaker 1: glad you're here today. In this story, we get to
[1:48] Speaker 1: hear about a special couple named Priscilla and Aquila, and
[1:53] Speaker 1: how God used them to encourage his people, especially when
[1:57] Speaker 1: life was difficult. Are you ready? Let's listen.
[2:03] Speaker 3: One day, Paul left the city of Athens to go
[2:06] Speaker 3: to Corinth, where he met a Jewish man named Aquila.
[2:10] Speaker 3: Aquila was married to his wife named Priscilla, and they
[2:13] Speaker 3: both moved to the city of Corinth from Italy. They
[2:17] Speaker 3: could not stay in Italy because Claudius, the Roman emperor,
[2:21] Speaker 3: demanded that all Jews leave Rome. So when Paul visited Corinth,
[2:26] Speaker 3: he went to stay with Aquila and Priscilla. They were
[2:29] Speaker 3: all tent makers, so they worked together. Every Sabbath, Paul
[2:34] Speaker 3: went to the synagogue to talk with the Greeks and
[2:36] Speaker 3: Jews to try to encourage them to believe in Jesus.
[2:41] Speaker 3: Except their hearts were hard towards Jesus, and they didn't
[2:44] Speaker 3: receive the message from Paul. Other followers of Jesus, Silas
[2:49] Speaker 3: and Timothy, joined Paul and Corinth to help teach about Jesus.
[2:54] Speaker 3: Paul spent every moment telling people the good news, but
[2:58] Speaker 3: they would not accept Paul's teachings and said a lot
[3:02] Speaker 3: of horrible things to him. Paul shook the dust off
[3:05] Speaker 3: his clothes to show that he was done trying to
[3:08] Speaker 3: convince them of the saving knowledge of Jesus. He said
[3:12] Speaker 3: to them, If you are not saved, it is your
[3:15] Speaker 3: own fault. I have done all that I can for you.
[3:18] Speaker 3: Now I will go to the non-Jewish people. Paul left
[3:22] Speaker 3: the synagogue and stayed at the home of Titus Justice,
[3:26] Speaker 3: who worshipped God with his whole heart. There, Paul taught
[3:31] Speaker 3: the same message, and the people living in that house
[3:34] Speaker 3: and others in Corinth believed in the Lord and were baptized.
[3:39] Speaker 3: In the night, Paul had a vision from God. The
[3:43] Speaker 3: Lord said to him, Don't be afraid. Keep talking to
[3:47] Speaker 3: people about the good news. Don't let them shut you up.
[3:50] Speaker 3: Don't be quiet. I am with you. No one will
[3:54] Speaker 3: hurt you because there are many of my people in
[3:57] Speaker 3: this city. Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and
[4:01] Speaker 3: a half, boldly preaching the message of Jesus. A man
[4:06] Speaker 3: named Galileo was the governor of southern Greece. Many Jews
[4:10] Speaker 3: in that area came together against Paul and tried him
[4:14] Speaker 3: in court. They charged him and said, This man is
[4:17] Speaker 3: teaching people to worship God against what the law says.
[4:21] Speaker 3: Galio was very confused and told the Jews, I would
[4:25] Speaker 3: understand if this man had done a crime or something wrong,
[4:29] Speaker 3: but he has not. You are just complaining about your
[4:32] Speaker 3: own law, so you must solve this problem on your own.
[4:37] Speaker 3: I don't want to be a part of this. Galio
[4:39] Speaker 3: made them all leave the court. The Jews were still upset,
[4:43] Speaker 3: so they got the leader of the synagogue involved. and
[4:46] Speaker 3: beat Paul. Galileo watched this happen and did not care
[4:50] Speaker 3: about it. Even after all of this, Paul remained faithful
[4:55] Speaker 3: because he remembered what the Lord had told him. He
[4:58] Speaker 3: stayed with the believers for.
[5:00] Speaker 2: Many more days.
[5:02] Speaker 3: When he left, he sailed towards Syria, and Aquila and
[5:06] Speaker 3: Priscilla went with him. On the way there, Paul cut
[5:10] Speaker 3: off his hair. He did this to show that he
[5:13] Speaker 3: made a promise to God. When they reached Ephesus, Paul
[5:17] Speaker 3: left Aquila and Priscilla there while he went to the
[5:21] Speaker 3: synagogue and quickly spoke with the Jews. Although the Jews
[5:25] Speaker 3: wanted him to stay, Paul left and said, I will
[5:28] Speaker 3: come back to you again if God wants me to.
[5:32] Speaker 3: Paul left Ephesus and traveled to Caesarea, Antioch, and the
[5:36] Speaker 3: countries of Galatia and Phrygia. In all of these places,
[5:40] Speaker 3: He gave greetings to churches and gave strength to all
[5:44] Speaker 3: the followers of Jesus. In Ephesus lived a Jew named Apollos.
[5:49] Speaker 3: He was very educated and knew the scriptures well. He
[5:53] Speaker 3: knew a lot about the Lord and was always excited
[5:56] Speaker 3: to speak the truth about Jesus. Apollos spoke boldly in
[6:00] Speaker 3: the synagogues, and Priscilla and Aquila heard him. Although Apollos
[6:05] Speaker 3: knew a lot, they took him to their home... and
[6:08] Speaker 3: helped him understand more about the ways of God. Apollos
[6:12] Speaker 3: was encouraged to go to southern Greece to preach what
[6:15] Speaker 3: he had learned. The followers there believed in Jesus and
[6:19] Speaker 3: accepted him. Apollos helped strengthen their faith in God by
[6:23] Speaker 3: talking about Jesus. He also argued with many Jews before
[6:28] Speaker 3: the people. Using scriptures, Apollos clearly proved the Jews wrong
[6:33] Speaker 3: and proved that Jesus is the Christ.
[6:43] Speaker 1: In today's story, we meet a dynamic duo named Priscilla
[6:48] Speaker 1: and Aquila. God used them to help encourage his people
[6:52] Speaker 1: in a unique, beautiful way. And he can use you
[6:56] Speaker 1: to do the same today. Let's take a look at
[7:00] Speaker 1: their story. Priscilla and Aquila were Jews from Italy. But Claudius,
[7:05] Speaker 1: the Roman emperor, decided he didn't want Jews in Rome.
[7:09] Speaker 1: So he kicked them out. Can you imagine being forced
[7:13] Speaker 1: to leave your country just because of the family you
[7:17] Speaker 1: were born into? Sadly, that still happens today. The people
[7:23] Speaker 1: it happens to are called refugees. Priscilla and Aquila were
[7:28] Speaker 1: refugees who made tents, just like Paul did. And when
[7:32] Speaker 1: they got kicked out of Rome, they brought their tent-making
[7:35] Speaker 1: business to Corinth, a town in Greece that felt a
[7:38] Speaker 1: lot like Rome. Now, We don't know how or when
[7:42] Speaker 1: Priscilla and Aquila came to believe in Jesus, but we
[7:46] Speaker 1: know that they did. And we know that they had
[7:49] Speaker 1: a very special gift for making people feel special called hospitality. Now,
[7:55] Speaker 1: hospitality has nothing to do with actual hospitals. Hospitality is
[8:00] Speaker 1: showing people God's love by making them feel warm and welcome.
[8:04] Speaker 1: Here's a good way to understand hospitality. Imagine that you've
[8:09] Speaker 1: had a very bad day. Everything has gone wrong and
[8:13] Speaker 1: now you're just tired and sad. But a special friend
[8:17] Speaker 1: invites you over to her house. And when you get there,
[8:20] Speaker 1: she's already baked you a plate of your favorite cookies.
[8:24] Speaker 1: She gives you to them with a cold glass of
[8:27] Speaker 1: milk and gets you settled in her comfiest chair. Then
[8:31] Speaker 1: she asks you to tell her all about your very
[8:34] Speaker 1: bad day. So you talk and talk and eat a
[8:37] Speaker 1: cookie or two and then talk some more and she listens,
[8:41] Speaker 1: really listens. And soon you're feeling so much better. That's hospitality.
[8:48] Speaker 1: It can be letting people come and stay at your
[8:51] Speaker 1: home or bringing food to someone having a hard time
[8:54] Speaker 1: or just listening, really listening to a friend who's had
[8:58] Speaker 1: a very bad day. But no matter how you show hospitality,
[9:03] Speaker 1: God uses it to encourage and strengthen his people. And
[9:08] Speaker 1: that's exactly what happened with Paul. When he got to Corinth,
[9:12] Speaker 1: he was tired and sad. He had been beaten up
[9:16] Speaker 1: and thrown in prison and run out of town a lot.
[9:20] Speaker 1: And even though he was frustrated, God could take care
[9:23] Speaker 1: of him. He was just worn out. But God didn't
[9:27] Speaker 1: want Paul to stay worn out. So he used Priscilla
[9:30] Speaker 1: and Aquila to welcome Paul into their home and take
[9:33] Speaker 1: care of him. Soon, Paul felt so much better. He
[9:39] Speaker 1: stayed for a while and they all became such good
[9:41] Speaker 1: friends that when Paul left Corinth to go to Ephesus,
[9:45] Speaker 1: Priscilla and Aquila went with him. Later, Paul went on
[9:50] Speaker 1: to Caesarea and Priscilla and Aquila stayed behind in Ephesus.
[9:55] Speaker 1: God had brought a new young leader for them to
[9:57] Speaker 1: take care of. His name was Apollo. He knew a
[10:01] Speaker 1: lot about the Bible, but he didn't know everything about Jesus.
[10:05] Speaker 1: So Priscilla and Aquila welcomed him into their home and
[10:09] Speaker 1: showed him hospitality. They taught him even more about Jesus,
[10:14] Speaker 1: and through them, God strengthened and encouraged another powerful preacher.
[10:20] Speaker 1: Even though Paul and Priscilla and Aquila weren't together anymore,
[10:24] Speaker 1: we know they all stayed good friends. How? Because in
[10:28] Speaker 1: the book of Romans, Paul sends his tender greetings to
[10:32] Speaker 1: them and tells everyone that Priscilla and Aquila risked their
[10:35] Speaker 1: lives to save him. You see, they not only shared
[10:40] Speaker 1: their lives, but they were willing to give up their
[10:43] Speaker 1: lives to strengthen and encourage God's people. Today, you can
[10:49] Speaker 1: use the gift of hospitality to strengthen and encourage people too.
[10:54] Speaker 1: You can invite people to your home and give them
[10:56] Speaker 1: a cup of tea or a juice or a nice treat.
[11:00] Speaker 1: You can really listen when someone has had a bad day.
[11:05] Speaker 1: And you can welcome boys and girls who don't have
[11:07] Speaker 1: a lot of friends to play with your friends so
[11:10] Speaker 1: they feel warm, welcomed, and loved. That's a wonderful way
[11:15] Speaker 1: to show God's love today. I am so happy you
[11:18] Speaker 1: joined me for this story. Come back next time to
[11:21] Speaker 1: hear more about Paul's travels and what happens when a
[11:25] Speaker 1: man who makes idols in Ephesus gets everybody really angry
[11:30] Speaker 1: about Paul's preaching. Remember, the Bible is the best story
[11:34] Speaker 1: ever told. It's God's story to you, and it's all true.
