Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 181. Jesus was brought before Pilate, who questioned Him about being the king of the Jews. Jesus explained His kingdom was not of this world and Pilate found no basis for charges against Him. Despite Pilate's efforts to release Jesus, the crowd chose to free Barabbas, a criminal, instead. Under pressure, Pilate washed his hands of the matter, symbolizing his attempt to absolve himself of responsibility for Jesus' death, and then ordered Jesus to be crucified after a severe beating and mocking by the soldiers. [1:10] Speaker 2: In our last story, Jesus was taken to the chief
[1:14] Speaker 2: priests to be questioned and was beaten and handed over
[1:18] Speaker 2: to Pilate. In this story, Jesus will stand before Pilate
[1:23] Speaker 2: to decide whether Jesus of Nazareth should be put to death,
[1:27] Speaker 2: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Hi, this is Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:40] Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. Thank
[1:43] Speaker 1: you for joining me. Today, we conclude the trial of
[1:48] Speaker 1: Jesus as he begins his journey to the cross. It's
[1:52] Speaker 1: a journey that sure is painful, sad, and terrifying. But
[1:57] Speaker 1: it's a journey that will lead us to joy, life,
[2:01] Speaker 1: and peace. All of heaven is cheering him on. Can
[2:05] Speaker 1: you hear it? Let's listen and see.
[2:07] Speaker 2: Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus said,
[2:37] Speaker 2: My kingdom does not belong to this world. If it did,
[2:41] Speaker 2: my servants would have fought to prevent me from being
[2:44] Speaker 2: given over to the Jewish leaders. Pilate said, So you
[2:48] Speaker 2: are a king. Jesus replied, True. I was born for this,
[2:55] Speaker 2: to tell people about the truth. That is why I
[2:59] Speaker 2: came into the world. And everyone who belongs to the
[3:02] Speaker 2: truth listens to me. Pilate said, What is truth? He
[3:09] Speaker 2: went out to the Jews again and said to them,
[3:13] Speaker 2: I find no charges against this man. Pilate then asked Herod,
[3:18] Speaker 2: who is a governor from where Jesus is from, to
[3:21] Speaker 2: help him judge him. Herod was happy to meet Jesus
[3:26] Speaker 2: and wanted him to perform a sign or miracle. He
[3:29] Speaker 2: questioned Jesus, but he did not respond to him. Herod's
[3:34] Speaker 2: soldiers and himself made fun of Jesus by dressing him
[3:38] Speaker 2: in a robe and sent him back to Pilate. Pilate
[3:42] Speaker 2: called all the officials to come together and tell them
[3:45] Speaker 2: that Jesus is blameless in his sight and from Herod's sight.
[3:49] Speaker 2: Pilate said that he does not deserve death and would
[3:52] Speaker 2: release him. At this point in the festival, the governor
[3:56] Speaker 2: was supposed to release a criminal that was chosen by
[3:59] Speaker 2: the people. Pilate asked the crowd, to pick who they
[4:03] Speaker 2: wanted to release to the public, Jesus or a well-known criminal, Barabbas.
[4:10] Speaker 2: The priests and the elder kept telling the crowd to
[4:13] Speaker 2: release Barabbas, and so the governor asked the crowd who
[4:16] Speaker 2: they wanted. They said that they wanted Barabbas. While waiting
[4:22] Speaker 2: to give the soldiers orders, Pilate's wife told him not
[4:26] Speaker 2: to kill Jesus because he is innocent and she had
[4:30] Speaker 2: dreamed about him. The crowd continued to yell for Barabbas
[4:34] Speaker 2: to be released and shouted for Jesus to be crucified.
[4:39] Speaker 2: Pilate released Barabbas and questioned the crowd one last time
[4:43] Speaker 2: about why they wanted to kill Jesus. Pilate knew that
[4:48] Speaker 2: he could not convince the crowd differently, so he washed
[4:51] Speaker 2: his hands with water and metaphorically said that he will
[4:55] Speaker 2: not be held responsible for Jesus' death. The crowd agreed. Instead,
[5:01] Speaker 2: it was bloodshed on themselves and their children's lives. Pilate
[5:06] Speaker 2: had Jesus beaten severely. The soldiers took Jesus into their headquarters,
[5:11] Speaker 2: took off all his clothes, dressed him in a robe,
[5:14] Speaker 2: placed a crown full of thorns on his head, and
[5:17] Speaker 2: put a reed in his right hand. They teased him
[5:21] Speaker 2: and hit him on the head and spat in his face.
[5:25] Speaker 2: Pilate continued to try and set Jesus free, but the
[5:28] Speaker 2: crowds wanted something different. They yelled that they are no
[5:33] Speaker 2: friend of Caesar if Pilate let him go. Pilate brought
[5:37] Speaker 2: Jesus out on the judge's seat and exclaimed, This is
[5:42] Speaker 2: your king. The people said to take him away, and
[5:47] Speaker 2: Pilate asked if he should crucify your king. The high
[5:52] Speaker 2: priest said that there is no other king but Caesar.
[5:57] Speaker 2: Pilate asked him what they should do with Jesus, And
[6:00] Speaker 2: the crowd said, crucify him. The soldiers took Jesus and
[6:07] Speaker 2: prepared him to be crucified.
[6:14] Speaker 1: We open today's story with Jesus before the Roman governor Pilate.
[6:19] Speaker 1: Pilate had certainly heard about all this drama. But he
[6:24] Speaker 1: wasn't so sure Jesus deserved to die. The crowd was
[6:29] Speaker 1: loud and angry. Pilate knew that if he went against them,
[6:33] Speaker 1: there would be a terrible riot and a huge fight
[6:36] Speaker 1: between the Jews and the Romans. He wanted things to
[6:39] Speaker 1: stay peaceful under his rule. They yelled things like, he
[6:43] Speaker 1: says he is a king. He says he is the
[6:47] Speaker 1: son of God. He should be killed. Finally, Pilate asked
[6:53] Speaker 1: Jesus himself, are you a king? Jesus says, my kingdom
[6:57] Speaker 1: is not of this world. I was born for this reason,
[7:01] Speaker 1: to tell people about the truth. Everyone who belongs to
[7:05] Speaker 1: the truth listens to me. Pilate was confused. Then he
[7:09] Speaker 1: asked Jesus a question. It's a question you will hear
[7:12] Speaker 1: time and time again living in today's culture. It's a
[7:17] Speaker 1: question you might hear from friends, teachers, celebrities, or anyone
[7:22] Speaker 1: else who does not know God.
[7:24] Speaker 2: What is truth?
[7:26] Speaker 1: Many, like Pilate, think that since everyone believes their own truth,
[7:32] Speaker 1: there really isn't one solid truth that is always true.
[7:36] Speaker 1: That is one of the biggest lies of the enemy.
[7:39] Speaker 1: Don't you ever believe it. There is a truth and
[7:42] Speaker 1: it is always true. And his name is Jesus. In fact,
[7:48] Speaker 1: Jesus talked about this very thing with his disciples the
[7:51] Speaker 1: night before he was crucified. He knew they were scared
[7:55] Speaker 1: and confused. He knew they were feeling lost. So he
[8:00] Speaker 1: comforted them with these words we read in John 14.
[8:04] Speaker 1: Don't let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe
[8:08] Speaker 1: also in me. In my Father's house are many homes.
[8:12] Speaker 1: If it weren't so, I would have told you. I'm
[8:15] Speaker 1: going to prepare a place for you. If I go
[8:18] Speaker 1: and prepare a place for you, I will come again.
[8:21] Speaker 1: and will receive you to myself, that where I am
[8:25] Speaker 1: you may be there also. You know where I go,
[8:29] Speaker 1: and you know the way. To which Thomas jumped in,
[8:33] Speaker 1: but wait, Lord, how do we know the way to
[8:36] Speaker 1: where we are going? Jesus said, I am the way,
[8:40] Speaker 1: the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
[8:44] Speaker 1: Father except through me. There you have it. Knowing, loving,
[8:48] Speaker 1: and being a friend to Jesus is the way we
[8:51] Speaker 1: get to God. He doesn't show the way. He is
[8:55] Speaker 1: the way. And not only is he the way, but
[8:59] Speaker 1: he is the truth and the life. If only Pilate
[9:03] Speaker 1: could see that. Standing right in front of him was
[9:06] Speaker 1: the truth he was searching for. There are going to
[9:09] Speaker 1: be times in your life when you will feel lost.
[9:12] Speaker 1: You won't know the way to go. Maybe it's a
[9:15] Speaker 1: big decision. problems with a friend or someone else that
[9:19] Speaker 1: leaves you wondering what to do. In those times, remember
[9:22] Speaker 1: these words of Jesus, I am the way. Run to him,
[9:28] Speaker 1: stay close to him, and let him show you the
[9:30] Speaker 1: steps you need to take. Don't look for the right way,
[9:34] Speaker 1: just look for Jesus. Well, Pilate clearly doesn't know what
[9:38] Speaker 1: to do with Jesus, so he asks Herod for help.
[9:42] Speaker 1: Instead of helping, Herod pretty much gets a kick out
[9:45] Speaker 1: of all this and allows his soldiers to dress Jesus
[9:48] Speaker 1: up in a robe and make fun of him. They
[9:51] Speaker 1: send him back to Pilate, whose wife had recently had
[9:54] Speaker 1: a dream about Jesus. She tells Pilate to let him go.
[9:58] Speaker 3: She has a fear.
[10:00] Speaker 1: He is who he says he is. Pilate tries, but
[10:04] Speaker 1: the crowd refuses. There was a custom in that day
[10:07] Speaker 1: for the governor to release one prisoner. Even if they
[10:10] Speaker 1: were guilty of a crime, they would be allowed to
[10:13] Speaker 1: walk away free. As we heard, there was a Pilate
[10:20] Speaker 1: asks the crowd if he should release Jesus or Barabbas.
[10:24] Speaker 1: Of course, they said Barabbas. Then what do we do
[10:27] Speaker 1: with Jesus? The screaming rang out in everyone's ears, crucify him.
[10:33] Speaker 1: Pilate washes his hands, telling the people that he is
[10:36] Speaker 1: not responsible for the death of Jesus.
[10:38] Speaker 2: They are.
[10:39] Speaker 1: He says, I'm out. And just like that, Jesus was
[10:43] Speaker 1: sent to be crucified. They beat him up. placed a
[10:47] Speaker 1: crown full of sharp thorns on his head, hit him,
[10:51] Speaker 1: spit on him, and took him away to be crucified.
[10:57] Speaker 1: Let's stop for a minute and just think about the
[10:59] Speaker 1: suffering of Jesus. He did this for us. Let's tell
[11:04] Speaker 1: Jesus thank you in our hearts. Well, all of the
[11:09] Speaker 1: prophecies of Jesus were coming true. One step at a time,
[11:13] Speaker 1: he was rescuing his children. They just didn't know it.
[11:18] Speaker 1: Thank you for listening. Next time, Jesus is going to
[11:21] Speaker 1: say three words that changed the world. It is finished.
[11:29] Speaker 1: Be sure to come back and hear about it. And
[11:31] Speaker 1: don't forget, the Bible is the best story ever told.
