[1:23] Speaker 4: age of 12, Jesus tells his parents that he is
[1:27] Speaker 4: about his Father's work. as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:39] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[1:43] Speaker 1: am so excited you're here today. Today we will hear
[1:47] Speaker 1: a story about Jesus when he was just about your
[1:50] Speaker 1: age and how his parents were worried because they thought
[1:53] Speaker 1: they had lost him.
[1:55] Speaker 2: It is such a good story, so let's dive in.
[2:01] Speaker 4: Jesus was almost a teenager, but unlike most other kids
[2:05] Speaker 4: his age, he never disrespected his parents. It was time
[2:10] Speaker 4: for Passover, and he and his parents were getting ready
[2:13] Speaker 4: to go to the temple in Jerusalem. This was the
[2:16] Speaker 4: custom in their time, and everyone in Nazareth made the journey.
[2:21] Speaker 2: Usually, they would all travel together.
[2:23] Speaker 4: They packed their things and departed when everyone was ready
[2:27] Speaker 4: in a grand caravan. Jesus would check in with his parents,
[2:31] Speaker 4: in the evening when the caravan stopped. But during the day,
[2:35] Speaker 4: Jesus was busy playing with other kids. When they arrived
[2:39] Speaker 4: in Jerusalem, they went about their business. They performed ceremonies
[2:43] Speaker 4: to become clean, and then they would visit the temple.
[2:47] Speaker 4: Over a few days, they would fully celebrate Passover together.
[2:52] Speaker 4: Jesus found his time in the temple very interesting and
[2:55] Speaker 4: often found his way into conversations with the rabbis. asking
[2:59] Speaker 4: them series of difficult questions that would make them all think.
[3:04] Speaker 2: He engaged with them for many days.
[3:06] Speaker 4: And before he realized it, Passover was over, yet he
[3:11] Speaker 4: remained in the temple. Meanwhile, his parents had gathered with
[3:15] Speaker 4: everyone else from Nazareth in order to return home. They
[3:19] Speaker 4: did not check for Jesus because they assumed he was
[3:22] Speaker 4: with the other children. That night, they waited for Jesus
[3:26] Speaker 4: to check in with them. When he never did, They
[3:29] Speaker 4: began to search the camp for him and could find
[3:32] Speaker 4: him nowhere. Panic struck, and they quickly packed their things
[3:37] Speaker 4: and separated from the group to return to Jerusalem. A
[3:41] Speaker 4: couple of days later, his parents found him in the temple,
[3:44] Speaker 4: and they were furious. They had left without him, assuming
[3:49] Speaker 4: he was with the caravan. When they asked what he
[3:52] Speaker 4: was doing, Jesus simply said, Surely you knew I'd be
[3:55] Speaker 4: here in my father's house doing his business. His parents
[4:00] Speaker 4: were greatly confused by this at the time, and they
[4:03] Speaker 4: took him home to Nazareth. When they got home, Jesus
[4:07] Speaker 4: continued to grow up living in accordance to the Jewish scriptures,
[4:11] Speaker 4: obeying his parents. In doing this, he found favor with
[4:15] Speaker 4: both man and God, and God was with him always.
[4:26] Speaker 1: Wow. Have you ever wondered what Jesus was like at
[4:30] Speaker 1: your age? Do you think he liked to run and
[4:33] Speaker 1: jump and climb the rocks around Nazareth? Or follow Joseph
[4:37] Speaker 1: around the workshop and help? Do you think he laughed
[4:41] Speaker 1: and told silly jokes? Did he splash outside in the
[4:44] Speaker 1: summer rain or skip rocks in the pond? The Bible
[4:48] Speaker 1: doesn't tell us if he did any of those things
[4:52] Speaker 1: as a kid.
[4:53] Speaker 2: But it does tell us this story.
[4:55] Speaker 1: About going up to Jerusalem with his family and friends
[4:58] Speaker 1: to celebrate Passover. You see, three times yearly, everyone in
[5:04] Speaker 1: Israel went to Jerusalem to worship God. Back then, people
[5:08] Speaker 1: didn't think about God being everywhere. To the Jews, worshiping
[5:12] Speaker 1: God happened when they made special sacrifices, and those were
[5:17] Speaker 1: only allowed to happen at the temple. So, three times
[5:21] Speaker 1: each year, everybody visited God in Jerusalem. and made sacrifices.
[5:27] Speaker 1: And for Jesus, since he is God, those trips probably
[5:31] Speaker 1: felt like going home. The temple probably felt comfortable and familiar. There,
[5:38] Speaker 1: he could talk to people who love to talk about God.
[5:41] Speaker 2: What's more, they could talk to him.
[5:45] Speaker 1: Can you imagine? When the teachers talked about Moses receiving
[5:50] Speaker 1: the Ten Commandments, Jesus didn't just know that story.
[5:54] Speaker 2: He was there when it happened.
[5:56] Speaker 1: When the teacher spoke out about King David writing the Psalms,
[6:00] Speaker 1: Jesus could hum the original tunes. When everyone got ready
[6:04] Speaker 1: to celebrate Passover, Jesus could picture the Israelites getting ready
[6:09] Speaker 1: to leave Egypt. The temple, where people told these stories
[6:13] Speaker 1: repeatedly and worshipped the Lord daily, is probably where Jesus
[6:18] Speaker 1: felt most natural and closest to his heavenly father. How
[6:24] Speaker 1: do I know? Because when his earthly parents lost him
[6:28] Speaker 1: for three days and showed up frantic and worried, Jesus
[6:33] Speaker 1: seemed a little confused.
[6:35] Speaker 2: He said, You see, Just like Jesus had.
[6:50] Speaker 1: Spent most of his young life following Joseph around his
[6:53] Speaker 1: workshop and learning to do carpenter's work, he was now
[6:57] Speaker 1: following God around his workshop, the temple, and learning.
[7:02] Speaker 2: To do God's work.
[7:04] Speaker 1: And even though Jesus could remember Moses getting the Ten
[7:07] Speaker 1: Commandments and David singing and the Israelites crossing the Red
[7:11] Speaker 1: Sea and so much more, he still listened to his parents.
[7:17] Speaker 1: When they said it was time to go, he said, okay,
[7:20] Speaker 1: and he didn't argue. He said bye to his new
[7:23] Speaker 1: friends and went with his mom and dad back to Nazareth. Why?
[7:27] Speaker 1: Because he knew that one of the commandments he'd given
[7:30] Speaker 1: to Moses said, honor your father and mother. And even
[7:34] Speaker 1: though Jesus created the whole wide world, he didn't act
[7:38] Speaker 1: like what he wanted to do was more important than
[7:41] Speaker 1: what his parents wanted him to do. He still honored them.
[7:46] Speaker 1: And if Jesus could obey his parents when he was
[7:49] Speaker 1: your age, you can too. He left one home, the temple,
[7:55] Speaker 1: where he could hang out with people who loved to
[7:57] Speaker 1: talk about God. And he went back to his other home, Nazareth,
[8:01] Speaker 1: where he could run and jump and climb rocks and
[8:04] Speaker 1: tell jokes and help Joseph in the workshop. Because God
[8:07] Speaker 1: doesn't just live in a temple. No, he's everywhere. And
[8:12] Speaker 1: you can worship him anywhere. Whether you're at church or
[8:16] Speaker 1: at home, in school or by the seashore, or even
[8:20] Speaker 1: splashing in the summer rain and making angels in the
[8:22] Speaker 1: winter snow. I am so happy you joined me today.
[8:27] Speaker 1: Come back next time to hear what happens when Jesus
[8:29] Speaker 1: grows up and his cousin, John, baptizes him before he
[8:33] Speaker 1: goes out into the wilderness for 40 days. Remember, the
