[1:36] Speaker 3: Simon the sorcerer will try and buy the gift of
[1:39] Speaker 3: the Holy Spirit from Peter and John. And an official
[1:44] Speaker 3: from Ethiopia will be baptized by Philip. As inspired by Acts.
[1:54] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:58] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:02] Speaker 1: so excited you're here with me today. Today, we're gonna
[2:05] Speaker 1: hear a story about how a man named Simon listened
[2:08] Speaker 1: to Philip, but didn't really understand what it meant to
[2:12] Speaker 1: follow Jesus and how God used the apostles to help
[2:16] Speaker 1: him learn the truth. Let's dive in.
[2:22] Speaker 3: When persecution started, People continued to share Jesus wherever they went.
[2:27] Speaker 3: Philip went to a city in Samaria and spoke of
[2:30] Speaker 3: Jesus to them. The people there listened closely to Philip
[2:34] Speaker 3: when they saw the signs that he was performing. Demons
[2:38] Speaker 3: were being cast out of people and people were being healed.
[2:42] Speaker 3: This brought great joy to the city. There was a
[2:46] Speaker 3: well-known sorcerer in the city named Simon who claimed to
[2:50] Speaker 3: be someone great. People were amazed by his sorcery, so
[2:54] Speaker 3: they followed Simon and said he had the great power
[2:59] Speaker 3: of God. When Simon saw Philip, he heard the good
[3:03] Speaker 3: news of Jesus. He became baptized with other men and women.
[3:07] Speaker 3: Simon then began to follow Philip around and was amazed
[3:11] Speaker 3: by the miracles he was performing. The apostles heard what
[3:14] Speaker 3: was happening in Samaria with Philip, so they sent Peter
[3:17] Speaker 3: and John. Peter and John prayed for the new believers
[3:20] Speaker 3: to receive the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit was
[3:24] Speaker 3: not on them. They were only baptized. When Peter and
[3:29] Speaker 3: John placed their hands on the people, they received the
[3:32] Speaker 3: Holy Spirit. When Simon saw this, he also wanted the
[3:36] Speaker 3: Holy Spirit so he could give it to others. And
[3:39] Speaker 3: so he offered the apostles money to receive it. Peter
[3:43] Speaker 3: responded to Simon saying, May your money perish with you.
[3:47] Speaker 3: because you thought you could buy the gift of God
[3:50] Speaker 3: with money. He then told Simon that his heart was
[3:54] Speaker 3: not right and finished by telling Simon to repent and
[3:57] Speaker 3: pray for forgiveness. Simon asked Peter to pray for him.
[4:01] Speaker 3: After telling many more people about Jesus, Peter and John
[4:04] Speaker 3: went back to Jerusalem. An angel appeared to Philip and
[4:08] Speaker 3: told him to head south to the desert road that
[4:11] Speaker 3: goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So Philip obeyed, and
[4:15] Speaker 3: on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official.
[4:20] Speaker 3: The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on
[4:22] Speaker 3: his way home, he was reading from the book of Isaiah,
[4:25] Speaker 3: the prophet. The spirit told Philip to go to the chariot,
[4:29] Speaker 3: so Philip ran as fast as he could to catch up.
[4:32] Speaker 3: When he heard the eunuch reading aloud, he asked, Do
[4:35] Speaker 3: you understand what you're reading? The eunuch replied, How can
[4:39] Speaker 3: I unless someone explains it to me? The eunuch then
[4:42] Speaker 3: invited Philip up into the chariot to explain to him.
[4:46] Speaker 3: Philip took the passage of Scripture and shared the good
[4:49] Speaker 3: news of Jesus with the eunuch. As they were traveling,
[4:52] Speaker 3: they came across some water, and the eunuch asked Philip
[4:55] Speaker 3: if he could be baptized, at which Philip agreed. When
[4:59] Speaker 3: they came out of the water, the Spirit of the
[5:01] Speaker 3: Lord took Philip away, and the eunuch never saw Philip again, but.
[5:06] Speaker 2: Continued to rejoice.
[5:08] Speaker 3: Philip then appeared in another town and went about sharing
[5:12] Speaker 3: Jesus with everyone that he met.
[5:19] Speaker 1: Wow, Philip has been having some wonderful adventures, hasn't he?
[5:25] Speaker 1: He's traveled all over telling people the good news about Jesus.
[5:30] Speaker 1: And God is doing amazing things. Let's take another look.
[5:35] Speaker 1: To start with, Philip visits Samaria. This shows us Philip
[5:40] Speaker 1: has a heart like Jesus. You see, nothing had changed
[5:44] Speaker 1: between the Jews and the Samaritans since Jesus had been alive.
[5:49] Speaker 1: Jews didn't like the Samaritans, and the Samaritans still didn't
[5:52] Speaker 1: like Jews. And now that Jesus had gone home to heaven,
[5:57] Speaker 1: it would have been easy for Philip to avoid the
[6:00] Speaker 1: Samaritans like all the other Jews did. Everybody in Israel
[6:04] Speaker 1: needed to know about Jesus, and Philip could have gone
[6:07] Speaker 1: elsewhere to share the good news with people. Everyone liked instead.
[6:12] Speaker 1: But Philip knew how much God loved the Samaritans and
[6:16] Speaker 1: how much they needed to know it. So even though
[6:19] Speaker 1: Jesus wasn't around, the Holy Spirit was. And Philip headed
[6:24] Speaker 1: to Samaria to tell the people there about the hope
[6:26] Speaker 1: they could have in Jesus. Philip's choice is a good
[6:30] Speaker 1: lesson for all of us. Maybe you know someone that
[6:34] Speaker 1: other people don't like very much. Did you know God
[6:39] Speaker 1: loves that person just as much as he loves you?
[6:43] Speaker 1: And he wants you to share his good news with them.
[6:47] Speaker 1: you might be the only person who tells them that
[6:50] Speaker 1: God loves them. One of the people Philip shared the
[6:53] Speaker 1: good news of Jesus with was Simon. Now, Simon was
[6:57] Speaker 1: a sorcerer, which meant people paid him money to do magic.
[7:02] Speaker 1: It's how he made a living. But when Simon heard
[7:05] Speaker 1: what Philip said about Jesus, and he saw the signs
[7:08] Speaker 1: and wonders Philip did by the power of the Holy Spirit,
[7:11] Speaker 1: he was amazed. This wasn't magic or sorcery or playing
[7:16] Speaker 1: tricks on people at all. It was real. And Simon
[7:20] Speaker 1: wanted to be a part of it. So Simon believed
[7:23] Speaker 1: in Jesus and was baptized. A little bit later, Peter
[7:27] Speaker 1: and John came to visit Samaria too. When they placed
[7:31] Speaker 1: their hands on people and prayed, the Holy Spirit came
[7:35] Speaker 1: to those people just like it had in Jerusalem. Simon
[7:39] Speaker 1: was amazed again. And he wanted to be able to
[7:42] Speaker 1: do the same thing. In his mind, he thought people
[7:46] Speaker 1: could pay him to give them the Holy Spirit. Like
[7:49] Speaker 1: they once paid him to do magic. But God's power
[7:53] Speaker 1: isn't for sale. It's free. And when we come to Jesus,
[7:58] Speaker 1: we ask to do things differently than we did before.
[8:01] Speaker 1: You see, Simon wanted to live like he always lived.
[8:05] Speaker 1: Just under a different name. But God wanted so much
[8:09] Speaker 1: more for him than that. God wanted to give him
[8:12] Speaker 1: a brand new heart and a whole new life. And
[8:15] Speaker 1: he wants the same for you and me. Because being
[8:19] Speaker 1: a Christian isn't about going to church on Sunday or
[8:22] Speaker 1: saying nice things. It's about becoming a whole new person.
[8:27] Speaker 1: The person God made you to be when he thought
[8:30] Speaker 1: you up. But don't worry. Your eyes won't change colors
[8:35] Speaker 1: or your hair won't suddenly become curly or straight. You
[8:38] Speaker 1: won't stop liking baseball or dancing or coloring or whatever
[8:42] Speaker 1: it is you love to do. But when you come
[8:45] Speaker 1: to Jesus and listen to the Holy Spirit, things will
[8:49] Speaker 1: start changing around on your inside. God will help you
[8:53] Speaker 1: love people more and treat them better and be willing
[8:56] Speaker 1: to give up things that are yours so other people
[9:00] Speaker 1: can have everything they need. And living this way doesn't
[9:04] Speaker 1: make you less of yourself. It makes you more like
[9:08] Speaker 1: Jesus and more like the you you really want to be.
[9:13] Speaker 1: It's fantastic. Simon needed help understanding this. So Peter and
[9:19] Speaker 1: John let him know pretty clearly that God didn't care
[9:22] Speaker 1: about his money. God wanted Simon's heart just like he
[9:27] Speaker 1: wants your heart today. I am so happy you joined
[9:31] Speaker 1: me today. Come back next time to hear how one
[9:34] Speaker 1: man who hated Jesus' followers suddenly found himself face to
