[0:00] Speaker 1: When he had spoken these things, he knelt down and
[0:03] Speaker 1: prayed with them. They all wept freely and fell on
[0:06] Speaker 1: Paul's neck and kissed him, sorrowing most of all that
[0:10] Speaker 1: they should see his face no more. Acts 20, 36-38
[0:16] Speaker 1: Dear God, knowing and loving you is greater than anything

[0:55] Speaker 3: Paul's Travels, in our last story.
[1:22] Speaker 4: We read about Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome
[1:25] Speaker 4: and how he plans to visit them soon. He explained
[1:28] Speaker 4: how to be righteous in God's sight and how to
[1:31] Speaker 4: live as a Christian in the world. In this story,
[1:34] Speaker 4: we return to Paul's missionary journey and how he will
[1:37] Speaker 4: sail to Troas and will raise a man named Eutychus
[1:41] Speaker 4: after he fell from a window. And then finally, say
[1:44] Speaker 4: goodbye to the elders in Ephesus and head to Jerusalem.
[1:49] Speaker 4: As inspired by Acts.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:58] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:01] Speaker 1: so happy you're here. Today we get to hear more
[2:04] Speaker 1: about Paul's travels and what happens when he preaches a long, long,
[2:09] Speaker 1: long time one night. What's going to happen? Let's jump
[2:13] Speaker 1: in and find out.
[2:16] Speaker 4: After the riot in Ephesus, Paul asked for the disciples.
[2:20] Speaker 4: The disciples came and Paul encouraged all of them. Then
[2:24] Speaker 4: Paul said goodbye. Paul traveled to Greece. On his way
[2:27] Speaker 4: to Greece, he went through a Roman province called Macedonia.
[2:32] Speaker 4: When Paul traveled through that area, he encouraged the people.
[2:36] Speaker 4: Once Paul arrived in Greece, he stayed for three months.
[2:40] Speaker 4: Paul discovered that some Jews were plotting evil against him
[2:43] Speaker 4: before he left Greece. Paul decided to leave a different
[2:47] Speaker 4: way through Greece by returning through Macedonia again. This time,
[2:52] Speaker 4: Paul was accompanied by different men. Eventually, Paul and the
[2:56] Speaker 4: others arrived in a city by the name of Troas.
[2:59] Speaker 4: Paul and the others stayed in Troas for seven days.
[3:03] Speaker 4: The last night Paul was there, he spoke for hours. First,
[3:06] Speaker 4: the people celebrated communion and had a meal together. Then
[3:10] Speaker 4: Paul talked until midnight. Because of how late it was.
[3:14] Speaker 2: A man named Eutychus was listening.
[3:16] Speaker 4: To Paul in the house and fell into a deep sleep.
[3:20] Speaker 4: The young man was sitting on a window ledge and
[3:22] Speaker 4: fell to the ground because he had fallen asleep. When
[3:26] Speaker 4: the people went to check on him, they discovered he
[3:28] Speaker 4: had died. Paul went to the young man's corpse, put
[3:32] Speaker 4: his arms fiercely around the young man, and proclaimed.
[3:35] Speaker 2: Do not be afraid. This young man is alive.
[3:39] Speaker 4: That night, the young man returned home alive, and his
[3:43] Speaker 4: friends and family were greatly comforted. The rest of the night,
[3:47] Speaker 4: Paul talked again until daytime, and had more food with everyone. Later,
[3:53] Speaker 4: Paul asked for the elders of the church of Ephesus.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Paul said to the elders, Paul continued.
[3:58] Speaker 2: Paul continued, In every city, persecution awaits me.
[4:21] Speaker 5: My life is meaningless unless I complete what God wants
[4:24] Speaker 5: me to do, which is to preach to everyone about
[4:27] Speaker 5: his salvation.
[4:28] Speaker 2: Paul told them, I will never see you again. Therefore,
[4:32] Speaker 2: watch yourselves and your church. People within the church will
[4:36] Speaker 2: try to divide the church. Remember, I warned you about
[4:40] Speaker 2: this for years.
[4:41] Speaker 4: Paul said a few more things. Afterward, they all knelt
[4:45] Speaker 4: on their knees and prayed. They all mourned over Paul's
[4:48] Speaker 4: final departure and walked him back to his ship where
[4:52] Speaker 4: he left them all. Paul and the other disciples traveled
[4:56] Speaker 4: around much more. They stayed in Caesarea with a disciple
[5:00] Speaker 4: named Philip. After a couple of days, a prophet came
[5:03] Speaker 4: to Paul and warned him, The Jews will tie you
[5:06] Speaker 4: up and hand you over to the Gentiles. When the
[5:09] Speaker 4: other disciples who had been traveling with Paul heard the prophet,
[5:12] Speaker 4: they protested and said.
[5:14] Speaker 5: Paul, please do not go to Jerusalem. Paul answered, it
[5:18] Speaker 5: breaks my heart to hear you guys say this. However,
[5:22] Speaker 5: I am ready to die for Jesus.
[5:24] Speaker 2: If I must.
[5:25] Speaker 5: The others gave up and simply said, God's will be done.
[5:31] Speaker 5: Paul and the other disciples eventually made it up to
[5:34] Speaker 5: Jerusalem where fellow Christians welcomed them lovingly.
[5:44] Speaker 4: Wow.
[5:45] Speaker 1: Today's story was a beautiful picture of the loving family
[5:49] Speaker 1: that God's church has become. When you read this book
[5:52] Speaker 1: in the Bible, the book of Acts, you learn about
[5:55] Speaker 1: all the friends Paul made while he was traveling around
[5:58] Speaker 1: telling people about Jesus. And then when you read other
[6:02] Speaker 1: books in the Bible, like Ephesians or Philippians or 1
[6:05] Speaker 1: and 2 Thessalonians, you see that those books are actual
[6:09] Speaker 1: letters Paul wrote to his friends in Ephesus, Philippi, and Thessalonica.
[6:15] Speaker 1: Over and over again, Paul writes things like, I miss
[6:19] Speaker 1: you a whole lot and I can't wait to see
[6:21] Speaker 1: you again. And I love you like you're my own children.
[6:26] Speaker 1: The wonderful thing is, Paul writes these things because he
[6:29] Speaker 1: means them. You see, God never meant for the church
[6:33] Speaker 1: to be filled with people who don't know each other's
[6:35] Speaker 1: names or Christians who barely know anything about each other
[6:39] Speaker 1: at all. The church began as a group of people
[6:42] Speaker 1: who loved Jesus and loved each other more than anything else.
[6:47] Speaker 1: They wanted to be together. It made them happy. They
[6:52] Speaker 1: loved getting together to eat and praise God and learn
[6:54] Speaker 1: about Jesus. They found purpose in caring for one another
[6:58] Speaker 1: and making sure everyone had everything they needed. And as
[7:03] Speaker 1: we saw in the story, they even wanted to stay
[7:05] Speaker 1: up all night just to hear Paul talk about Jesus.
[7:09] Speaker 1: Though poor Eutychus couldn't quite stay awake. His little nap
[7:12] Speaker 1: turned out to be pretty dangerous. But when he fell
[7:16] Speaker 1: out of a window, God used Paul to heal him.
[7:19] Speaker 1: And everybody went right back to learning about Jesus. When
[7:24] Speaker 1: it was time for Paul to leave his friends, everyone
[7:27] Speaker 1: prayed for him and cried because they loved him so much.
[7:30] Speaker 1: They all knew they were going to miss each other terribly.
[7:34] Speaker 1: But they also knew that nothing was more important than
[7:37] Speaker 1: telling people about Jesus. You see, God never meant for
[7:41] Speaker 1: the message of Jesus to be just a nice story
[7:44] Speaker 1: that only pastors and Sunday school teachers talk about. For
[7:48] Speaker 1: Paul and his friends, the message of Jesus was like
[7:51] Speaker 1: food or air. They couldn't live without it. Knowing Jesus
[7:55] Speaker 1: means experience all the best and most amazing things God
[7:59] Speaker 1: made for us. A full and abundant life. This kind
[8:04] Speaker 1: of life isn't about more stuff or more money or
[8:06] Speaker 1: more power. No, it's all about the things we really want.
[8:11] Speaker 1: Things like forgiveness and hope and joy and deep, rich,
[8:16] Speaker 1: loving relationships that reflect God's life-giving love for us. It's
[8:21] Speaker 1: a life that anybody can live, no matter where you
[8:24] Speaker 1: are or how much money you have or even what
[8:27] Speaker 1: problems are in your life. And Paul and his friends
[8:31] Speaker 1: knew that helping as many people as possible experience that
[8:35] Speaker 1: life is worth everything it cost. That's why even though
[8:39] Speaker 1: Paul knew danger, trouble, and hardship were waiting for him
[8:43] Speaker 1: in Jerusalem, he went anyways. There were people there who
[8:47] Speaker 1: needed to know about Jesus. You see, God never meant
[8:52] Speaker 1: for us to choose comfort or an easy life over
[8:55] Speaker 1: everything else. The most important things in life require hard
[8:59] Speaker 1: work and dedication. The most important things in life require
[9:05] Speaker 1: hard work and dedication. Sometimes that might mean that you
[9:09] Speaker 1: might feel uncomfortable or face challenges, and that's okay. God
[9:14] Speaker 1: is there to help you. He will never leave you alone.
[9:19] Speaker 1: You can trust him. That's what you'll read about in
[9:22] Speaker 1: every book of the Bible. Because there's nothing better in
[9:25] Speaker 1: life than knowing Jesus. It's like food or air. And
[9:29] Speaker 1: there's nothing more valuable than being a part of God's
[9:32] Speaker 1: loving family. Living a full and abundant life and inviting
[9:37] Speaker 1: others to live it too is worth everything it costs.
[9:41] Speaker 1: And it's what God means for us to do. I
[9:44] Speaker 1: am so happy you joined me today. Come back next
