[0:01] Speaker 1: For Yahweh says, You will not see wind, neither will
[0:05] Speaker 1: you see rain. Yet that valley will be filled with water,
[0:09] Speaker 1: and you will drink, both you and your livestock and
[0:12] Speaker 1: your other animals. This is an easy thing in the
[0:16] Speaker 1: Lord's sight. 2 Kings 3, 17-18 Dear God, thank you

[1:24] Speaker 2: Second Kings, Chapter 3 Three Kings vs. the Moabites In
[1:31] Speaker 2: our last story, Elijah was taken to heaven and Elisha
[1:35] Speaker 2: became the prophet. When a group of boys made fun
[1:38] Speaker 2: of Elisha's baldness, he cursed them and had two bears
[1:42] Speaker 2: attack 42 of the boys. In this story, we will
[1:47] Speaker 2: learn how the three kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom
[1:51] Speaker 2: go into battle against the Moabites. As inspired by Second Kings.
[2:00] Speaker 1: Good morning, afternoon, and evening. It's Joy Sadler with the
[2:04] Speaker 1: Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I'm so glad you're
[2:07] Speaker 1: with me today. In this story, we'll hear how God
[2:11] Speaker 1: used something as simple as water to save three kings
[2:15] Speaker 1: and all their armies and defeat their enemies at the
[2:20] Speaker 1: same time. Let's find out how he did it.
[2:26] Speaker 2: Ahab's son, Joram, became king of Israel, while Jehoshaphat was
[2:31] Speaker 2: in his eighteenth year as king of Judah. Joram would
[2:36] Speaker 2: be king for twelve years, and he was a bad king,
[2:40] Speaker 2: but not nearly as bad as his mother and father
[2:42] Speaker 2: had been. He did remove the stone his father made
[2:46] Speaker 2: to worship Baal, but Joram still kept up some of
[2:49] Speaker 2: the same sinful practices. Now Misha was the king of
[2:53] Speaker 2: Moab and raised many sheep. He had been forced by Ahab,
[2:58] Speaker 2: the king of Israel, to give 100,000 sheep and the
[3:02] Speaker 2: wool of 100,000 rams to the king. So when Ahab died,
[3:07] Speaker 2: the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel
[3:10] Speaker 2: because he was tired of giving his sheep and wool away.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Joram then gathered his soldiers in Israel to prepare for war.
[3:19] Speaker 2: He also sent messengers to Jehoshaphat and asked, Since the
[3:22] Speaker 2: king of Moab has rebelled against Will you help me
[3:26] Speaker 2: in the battle against him? Jehoshaphat agreed and asked, What
[3:31] Speaker 2: is the best way to go in order to attack them?
[3:34] Speaker 2: Joram answered, We will go through the desert of Edom.
[3:38] Speaker 2: So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and
[3:40] Speaker 2: the king of Edom marched for seven days.
[3:44] Speaker 3: There wasn't much progress.
[3:46] Speaker 2: Not only that, they had run out of water for
[3:49] Speaker 2: their armies and all of the animals, and they became
[3:53] Speaker 2: very thirsty. The king of Israel cried out, This is awful.
[3:58] Speaker 2: The Lord called us three kings to be defeated by
[4:01] Speaker 2: the Moabites. Jehoshaphat then asked, Wait, is there a prophet
[4:07] Speaker 2: of the Lord that lives here? Maybe we can ask
[4:10] Speaker 2: the Lord through a prophet. One of the servants of
[4:13] Speaker 2: the king of Israel answered, Yes, actually, Elisha, the servant
[4:17] Speaker 2: of Elijah, is here. So the three kings then decided
[4:21] Speaker 2: to go see Elisha. Elisha saw them. and said to
[4:25] Speaker 2: the king of Israel, Go away, consult your fake prophets
[4:29] Speaker 2: back home. The king of Israel replied, No way, we
[4:33] Speaker 2: are not leaving. God called us three kings only to
[4:36] Speaker 2: let the Moabites defeat us. Elisha said, Listen, since Jehoshaphat,
[4:43] Speaker 2: king of Judah, is here, and I respect him, bring
[4:47] Speaker 2: me a harp player. The harp player arrived and played,
[4:52] Speaker 2: and then the power of the Lord came upon Elisha.
[4:55] Speaker 3: Elisha said.
[4:57] Speaker 2: The Lord says to dig ditches all over. Now you
[5:01] Speaker 2: won't hear wind or see the rain, but the valley
[5:04] Speaker 2: will fill up with plenty of water. You will not
[5:08] Speaker 2: go thirsty. God will also hand over Moab to you.
[5:12] Speaker 2: You will level the cities and ruin their fortifications and
[5:16] Speaker 2: springs and fields. And so the next morning, at about
[5:20] Speaker 2: the same time the morning sacrifice was offered, water came
[5:25] Speaker 2: poured in from Edom, and filled the valley. Word began
[5:30] Speaker 2: to spread among the Moabites that the kings had come
[5:32] Speaker 2: to fight them. So anyone who was able to put
[5:35] Speaker 2: on armor came out and waited at the border to
[5:38] Speaker 2: defend themselves. Early in the morning, as the sun was
[5:41] Speaker 2: shining on the water, it appeared like the water was
[5:44] Speaker 2: red like blood, so much so that the Moabites said,
[5:48] Speaker 2: This is blood. The only explanation is that the three
[5:52] Speaker 2: kings slayed each other, Let's go take what we can
[5:56] Speaker 2: from the dead bodies. The Moabites went, and as they
[5:59] Speaker 2: approached the camp of the Israelites, the Israelites seemed to
[6:02] Speaker 2: come out of nowhere and fought and defeated the Moabites.
[6:06] Speaker 2: And as Elisha had said, they leveled and destroyed the cities.
[6:11] Speaker 2: The king of Moab retreated with his remaining 700 men,
[6:15] Speaker 2: hoping to get past the king of Edom to safety,
[6:18] Speaker 2: but they were unable to. So the king of Moab
[6:22] Speaker 2: took his oldest son, the one to be king after him,
[6:25] Speaker 2: and offered his son as a sacrifice. And Israel returned
[6:30] Speaker 2: back home.
[6:36] Speaker 1: Whoa, God is so clever, isn't he? The Bible is
[6:40] Speaker 1: filled with stories about God winning battles for his people,
[6:44] Speaker 1: each a little different. That's because God wants to teach
[6:48] Speaker 1: us something new about himself each time. In this story,
[6:52] Speaker 1: the king of Moab rebelled against Israel. So Jehoram, the
[6:56] Speaker 1: king of Israel, teamed up with King Jehoshaphat of Judah
[7:01] Speaker 1: and the king of Edom to stop the rebellion. Now
[7:04] Speaker 1: these three kings knew that if they marched straight to Moab,
[7:09] Speaker 1: there would be a huge fight and they might lose.
[7:13] Speaker 1: So they decided to be super sneaky. That way no
[7:16] Speaker 1: one in Moab would see them until they were right there.
[7:22] Speaker 1: The kings and all their soldiers, horses, and servants started
[7:26] Speaker 1: marching toward Moab through the hot, dry desert. First they
[7:32] Speaker 1: went left. Then they went right. Then left again. Then right.
[7:38] Speaker 1: And another right. And another right.
[7:43] Speaker 2: And uh-oh.
[7:44] Speaker 1: They'd been out in that hot, dry desert being so
[7:49] Speaker 1: super sneaky for so long that they ran out of water. Now,
[7:54] Speaker 1: King Jehoram of Israel was a lot like his mom
[7:58] Speaker 1: and dad, Ahab and Jezebel. And just as the king
[8:02] Speaker 1: of Moab was rebelling against him, he was rebelling against
[8:07] Speaker 1: the Lord in his heart. He didn't worship the false
[8:10] Speaker 1: god Baal as his parents did. Still, Jehoram... had done
[8:14] Speaker 1: many terrible, horrible, awful things. So when they ran out
[8:19] Speaker 1: of water, he started to cry, Oh no! And the
[8:23] Speaker 1: king wailed. The Lord brought the three of us out
[8:27] Speaker 1: here in the desert to die. His boo-hoos got louder
[8:31] Speaker 1: and louder. Stop it, King Jehoshaphat said. We'll just ask
[8:36] Speaker 1: the Lord what to do. He'll help us. King Jehoshaphat
[8:40] Speaker 1: loved God and trusted that God would give them the
[8:43] Speaker 1: help they needed. And he was right. It turns out
[8:48] Speaker 1: the Lord's prophet Elisha was nearby. So the kings went
[8:52] Speaker 1: to ask Elisha to talk to God for them. Aren't
[8:56] Speaker 1: you glad we don't have to find someone else to
[8:58] Speaker 1: talk to God for us? You can talk to God
[9:02] Speaker 1: anytime you want just by praying. He always wants to
[9:07] Speaker 1: hear from you. And when God heard from these three kings,
[9:12] Speaker 1: he said, This is easy. Dig a bunch of big
[9:15] Speaker 1: holes and then sit back and watch. I'll take care
[9:19] Speaker 1: of you, your soldiers, your horses, and your servants. Then
[9:23] Speaker 1: I'll even fix your Moabite problem. So the kings went
[9:28] Speaker 1: out and dug the holes. That night there was no wind,
[9:32] Speaker 1: there was no rain, no storm, but in the morning
[9:36] Speaker 1: all those holes were filled with water. There were even
[9:40] Speaker 1: enough for everyone to have a drink. And when those
[9:43] Speaker 1: Moabites heard the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom were coming,
[9:48] Speaker 1: I guess they hadn't been so sneaky after all, they
[9:52] Speaker 1: looked out and saw those huge puddles. But they thought
[9:56] Speaker 1: they were filled with blood, not water. Aha, we're winning,
[10:01] Speaker 1: the Moabites said, and they ran right into the three
[10:05] Speaker 1: kings and their armies who fought and won the battle easily. Now,
[10:10] Speaker 1: what can we learn about God in this story? Well,
[10:14] Speaker 1: in the Bible, water does two important things. It cleans
[10:18] Speaker 1: and it quenches thirst. Remember Noah and the flood? People
[10:23] Speaker 1: have become so simple that God gave the whole world
[10:26] Speaker 1: a bath to make it clean again. Baptism is another
[10:30] Speaker 1: kind of bath that helps us understand how God makes
[10:35] Speaker 1: us sparkly clean on the inside. When the three kings
[10:39] Speaker 1: drank the water God put in the big holes, it
[10:42] Speaker 1: saved them. But the next day they were thirsty again.
[10:47] Speaker 1: Jesus said he was the living water and anyone who
[10:51] Speaker 1: drinks the water he gives will never be thirsty again.
[10:55] Speaker 1: You see, God can fill the empty holes in our
[10:58] Speaker 1: hearts with his living water. The same water that cleans
[11:02] Speaker 1: us on the inside from our sins. For him, it's easy.
[11:07] Speaker 1: I'm so happy you joined me today. Come back next
[11:10] Speaker 1: time to find out how. Elisha's miracles point to something
[11:15] Speaker 1: so much bigger than he even realized. Remember, the Bible
[11:20] Speaker 1: is the best story ever told. It's God's story to you,
[11:24] Speaker 1: and it's all true. Enjoy the podcast? Leave a review
