[1:16] Speaker 2: Jesus' last days on earth and the new 12. In
[1:22] Speaker 2: our last story, Jesus continued to appear to his disciples
[1:26] Speaker 2: like Doubting Thomas, and also appeared to the disciples as
[1:30] Speaker 2: they were fishing. He also restored Peter and commanded him
[1:35] Speaker 2: to take care of my sheep and follow me. In
[1:39] Speaker 2: this story, Jesus will ascend into heaven, and the disciples
[1:44] Speaker 2: will be told to wait for the Holy Spirit, as
[1:48] Speaker 2: inspired by the New Testament.
[1:54] Speaker 1: For 40 days.
[2:20] Speaker 2: Jesus was with his disciples and spoke to them about
[2:24] Speaker 2: what was prophesied about him, his death and resurrection. He
[2:29] Speaker 2: told them to go to Jerusalem and wait for the
[2:32] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit to help them on this earth when he
[2:35] Speaker 2: left it. During this period, Jesus spoke and appeared to
[2:39] Speaker 2: many after he was resurrected, speaking to over 500 men, women,
[2:44] Speaker 2: and children who became witnesses to his resurrection. At the
[2:49] Speaker 2: appointed time, He then took his disciples up to the
[2:53] Speaker 2: Mount of Olives. To his disciples, he made a promise
[2:57] Speaker 2: that he would remain with them always in spirit until
[3:00] Speaker 2: the end. He gave them all authority through his power
[3:04] Speaker 2: to make disciples of people of all nations and to
[3:08] Speaker 2: baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and
[3:11] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. He lifted his hands up to the heavens,
[3:15] Speaker 2: blessed his disciples, and then was instantly taken up to
[3:19] Speaker 2: heaven in a cloud, taken out of sight. They kept
[3:24] Speaker 2: staring into the sky, and then suddenly two men clothed
[3:28] Speaker 2: in white approached them. Why are you standing here staring
[3:32] Speaker 2: at the sky? They said to the men, You look
[3:36] Speaker 2: for Jesus, but he's been taken up into heaven, and
[3:40] Speaker 2: he will come back on a cloud in the same
[3:42] Speaker 2: way you saw him leave. After Jesus ascended into heaven,
[3:47] Speaker 2: The disciples descended from the Mount of Olives and went
[3:50] Speaker 2: back into the city of Jerusalem as they were told.
[3:54] Speaker 2: Once in Jerusalem, they then went to the place where
[3:57] Speaker 2: they were staying. They all gathered together. Peter, John, Andrew, James, Philip, Thomas, Matthew, Bartholomew, James,
[4:07] Speaker 2: son of Alphaeus, Simon, the zealot, and Judas, son of James.
[4:13] Speaker 2: All of the men in the room began praying without ceasing.
[4:16] Speaker 2: With them was Mary, mother of Jesus, and the brothers
[4:20] Speaker 2: of Jesus. After a while, Peter stood and spoke up
[4:24] Speaker 2: among the people, about 120 people, saying, We all know
[4:31] Speaker 2: what was written in Scripture about Judas Iscariot, the man
[4:34] Speaker 2: who sold out our Lord Jesus Christ. He was one
[4:38] Speaker 2: of us, and he did ministry with us. But we
[4:42] Speaker 2: all know his fate, his death in the field of blood.
[4:47] Speaker 2: The psalmist wrote long ago that this man must be
[4:51] Speaker 2: replaced in his place of leadership. So that is what
[4:54] Speaker 2: we must do. We must choose someone who has been
[4:59] Speaker 2: with us from the beginning, someone who has followed the
[5:01] Speaker 2: leadership of our Lord. The men among Peter made their decisions.
[5:07] Speaker 2: They chose to nominate Joseph, Rassabas, and Matthias. After these
[5:12] Speaker 2: nominations were made, They all came together and prayed over
[5:16] Speaker 2: the decision to be made. They prayed for God to
[5:19] Speaker 2: reveal the hearts of the men up for nomination, and
[5:22] Speaker 2: they prayed for God's will to be accomplished in the decision.
[5:27] Speaker 2: After prayer, they cast lots for who was to join
[5:30] Speaker 2: the eleven. The lot fell on Matthias, and he was
[5:35] Speaker 2: elected and added to the eleven to take Judas' position
[5:40] Speaker 2: as an apostle.
[5:44] Speaker 1: Have you ever seen a relay race? Or have you
[5:47] Speaker 1: ever run in one at school? A relay race is
[5:51] Speaker 1: where four athletes run as a team instead of one
[5:54] Speaker 1: person doing all the work. All four take turns running
[5:59] Speaker 1: one section of the race. They carry a stick called
[6:02] Speaker 1: a baton. And when one is done running, he or
[6:05] Speaker 1: she hands it to the next runner who's ready to
[6:07] Speaker 1: take off. In a relay, everyone shares the work. so
[6:11] Speaker 1: together they can go farther than any one of them
[6:14] Speaker 1: can alone. Our story today is a little like a
[6:18] Speaker 1: relay race, isn't it? Jesus has been running really hard.
[6:23] Speaker 1: He's been teaching people about God's love and the kingdom
[6:26] Speaker 1: of heaven. He helped people understand the importance of loving
[6:31] Speaker 1: their neighbor and obeying God. And he even demonstrated real, true,
[6:36] Speaker 1: sacrificial love by dying on the cross for us. Then
[6:40] Speaker 1: he rose again to show everyone God's great power over everything,
[6:46] Speaker 1: even sin and death. But now it's time for Jesus
[6:51] Speaker 1: to pass the baton. He knows that if his message
[6:55] Speaker 1: is really going to spread all over the world, other
[6:58] Speaker 1: people besides just him need to carry it. He knows
[7:02] Speaker 1: that together we can carry God's message of love so
[7:06] Speaker 1: much further than any of us can alone. That's why
[7:10] Speaker 1: he gave his disciples special instructions when he left. More
[7:14] Speaker 1: than that, he gave them his very own power to
[7:18] Speaker 1: carry the baton of his message to the world. Do
[7:22] Speaker 1: you remember what he said? Right before Jesus went back
[7:26] Speaker 1: home to heaven, he said, Go and make disciples of
[7:30] Speaker 1: all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
[7:34] Speaker 1: and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. teaching
[7:38] Speaker 1: them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold,
[7:43] Speaker 1: I am with you always, even to the end of
[7:47] Speaker 1: the age. That's a picture of the race he wanted
[7:51] Speaker 1: his followers to run. And it's the race he wants
[7:54] Speaker 1: you and me to run too. So how do we
[7:58] Speaker 1: do it? By telling everyone everywhere how great God is
[8:03] Speaker 1: and then helping them live the way he told us to.
[8:07] Speaker 1: You see, Jesus came to invite everyone into his kingdom.
[8:12] Speaker 1: That's what he meant when he said, go and make
[8:16] Speaker 1: disciples of all nations. God wants people from Afghanistan to
[8:21] Speaker 1: Zimbabwe and every country in between to understand that he
[8:26] Speaker 1: loves them. And he wants them to follow him just
[8:30] Speaker 1: like Peter and John and all the other disciples did
[8:34] Speaker 1: when Jesus was on earth. He doesn't want anyone to
[8:38] Speaker 1: be left out. That's why he handed the baton to
[8:42] Speaker 1: his disciples back then and why he's handing it to
[8:46] Speaker 1: you and me today. Because even now, so many people
[8:52] Speaker 1: don't know about Jesus. They don't know God loves them
[8:56] Speaker 1: and that he wants them to be part of his kingdom,
[8:59] Speaker 1: part of his family. Millions of people don't understand what
[9:04] Speaker 1: it means to be Jesus' disciple or how to obey
[9:09] Speaker 1: what the Bible says. They don't know God keeps his
[9:12] Speaker 1: promises or that they can trust him. And Jesus is
[9:16] Speaker 1: passing his baton to you and me so we can
[9:19] Speaker 1: tell them. Now, you might worry that you won't be
[9:23] Speaker 1: able to answer every person's questions perfectly or explain everything
[9:28] Speaker 1: just right.
[9:30] Speaker 3: That's okay.
[9:31] Speaker 1: Because even though Jesus isn't running... He's cheering you on
[9:35] Speaker 1: from the stands. Did you hear what he said? I
[9:39] Speaker 1: will be with you even to the end. God sees
[9:43] Speaker 1: you and he's trusting you with the special message of
[9:46] Speaker 1: his love. He hasn't left you to carry his message
[9:50] Speaker 1: into the world alone. He is with you. And together
[9:54] Speaker 1: with him, you'll go farther than you ever could alone.
[9:57] Speaker 1: I am so happy you joined. me today come back
[10:02] Speaker 1: next time to hear what happens when the holy spirit
[10:04] Speaker 1: comes to live with the jesus's followers remember the bible
