[1:20] Speaker 3: teaching on the kingdom of God called the Sermon on
[1:24] Speaker 3: the Mount.
[1:25] Speaker 2: And all the people were amazed.
[1:28] Speaker 3: In this story, Jesus continues his ministry and heals the
[1:33] Speaker 3: slave of a Roman official and raises a young man
[1:37] Speaker 3: back to life, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Hi, everyone. It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:49] Speaker 1: I am so glad you're here for another story from
[1:53] Speaker 1: the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Today's story from
[1:56] Speaker 1: the gospel is about a Roman officer with a very
[2:00] Speaker 1: strong faith in Jesus. We're also going to hear about
[2:04] Speaker 1: the compassion of God and how he feels what we feel.
[2:08] Speaker 1: So let's jump in.
[2:13] Speaker 3: In the city of Capernaum lived a Roman army officer.
[2:17] Speaker 3: He was a good man that served the people of
[2:20] Speaker 3: Israel with a good heart. He had a servant that
[2:23] Speaker 3: became very sick. Near to death, the officer loved the
[2:28] Speaker 3: servant and was very concerned for him. When the officer
[2:32] Speaker 3: heard about Jesus and the miracles he had done, he
[2:35] Speaker 3: sent some Jewish leaders to him and told them, Beg
[2:40] Speaker 3: Jesus to come heal my servant. They immediately went to
[2:44] Speaker 3: Jesus and said, This is an officer worthy of your help.
[2:49] Speaker 3: He loves our nation and our people. He has even
[2:53] Speaker 3: built a synagogue for us. So Jesus began walking with
[2:57] Speaker 3: the men to the officer's home. He got near the
[3:00] Speaker 3: home when the officer sent a friend to tell Jesus.
[3:05] Speaker 4: Lord, you don't need to come to my house. I
[3:08] Speaker 4: am not good enough for you to be in my house.
[3:12] Speaker 4: You only need to say the word and my servant
[3:14] Speaker 4: will be healed. As an officer, I understand authority. I
[3:19] Speaker 4: tell one soldier to go and he goes. When Jesus
[3:22] Speaker 4: heard this, he was amazed. He turned to the crowd
[3:25] Speaker 4: following him and said, I tell you, this is the
[3:29] Speaker 4: greatest faith I have seen anywhere, even in Israel.
[3:34] Speaker 3: The Jewish leaders that had been sent to Jesus went
[3:37] Speaker 3: back to the house where they found the servant completely healed.
[3:42] Speaker 3: The next day, Jesus went to a town called Nain,
[3:47] Speaker 3: and a large crowd followed them there.
[3:50] Speaker 4: As they came near the city gates, he saw a funeral.
[3:54] Speaker 4: A mother who was a widow lost her only son.
[3:59] Speaker 3: People from the town were gathered to watch her son
[4:01] Speaker 3: be carried out.
[4:03] Speaker 4: When Jesus saw the.
[4:04] Speaker 3: Widow, he felt sorry for her and said to her,
[4:08] Speaker 3: Don't cry. He went up to the man's coffin and
[4:12] Speaker 3: touched it. The men carrying it stopped. Jesus said, Young man, I.
[4:19] Speaker 4: Tell you, get up. Suddenly the man sat up opened
[4:23] Speaker 4: his eyes and began to talk. All the people were amazed.
[4:28] Speaker 4: They began praising God and saying, God is taking care
[4:34] Speaker 4: of his people. The news about Jesus quickly spread all
[4:39] Speaker 4: through Judea and the surrounding areas.
[4:48] Speaker 1: God has visited his people.
[4:51] Speaker 5: Wow!
[4:52] Speaker 1: Aren't the stories of Jesus so amazing? We could talk
[4:56] Speaker 1: about his life all day. From this passage in Luke 7,
[5:01] Speaker 1: we meet a Roman centurion, an officer in charge of
[5:05] Speaker 1: a hundred men. The Bible tells us he was a
[5:08] Speaker 1: good man and he was kind to the Jews, unlike
[5:12] Speaker 1: other Roman officers who wanted to boss them around and
[5:16] Speaker 1: bully them every day. The centurion had a servant he
[5:20] Speaker 1: loved very much, and that servant was so sick he
[5:25] Speaker 1: was about to die. The officer was very worried about
[5:29] Speaker 1: his friend, and he was desperate to help him find healing.
[5:34] Speaker 1: Although this officer knew where to get help, he was
[5:37] Speaker 1: not Jewish or one of God's chosen people, so he
[5:41] Speaker 1: didn't think he was allowed to just walk up to
[5:44] Speaker 1: Jesus and ask him to come fix everything. Instead, he
[5:49] Speaker 1: sent some very important Jewish leaders to Jesus in his place.
[5:54] Speaker 1: And since they knew this officer was a nice guy
[5:56] Speaker 1: who helped them build a synagogue, a church, they seemed
[6:00] Speaker 1: happy to do it. Then, as we heard, when Jesus
[6:04] Speaker 1: came near the officer's house, he told Jesus that he
[6:07] Speaker 1: did not need to come into the house, but he
[6:10] Speaker 1: only needed to speak the healing from a distance. He said,
[6:15] Speaker 1: I tell people what to do all the time in
[6:17] Speaker 1: my job. And you are way more in charge than
[6:20] Speaker 1: I am. I know you can do anything by just
[6:24] Speaker 1: saying it. He was absolutely right. Jesus spoke the words
[6:30] Speaker 1: and you guessed it, the servant was healed. But then
[6:34] Speaker 1: when Jesus said something interesting, he said that in all
[6:38] Speaker 1: of Israel, he had never seen a greater faith than
[6:42] Speaker 1: the faith of this officer. Many people who study the
[6:46] Speaker 1: Bible believe that this was a sign of the future,
[6:50] Speaker 1: of all the Gentiles that would one day believe and
[6:54] Speaker 1: have faith in Jesus. And by the way, if you're
[6:57] Speaker 1: not Jewish, that includes you. If you remember, a Gentile
[7:02] Speaker 1: is someone who's not Jewish. It's someone who's not in
[7:05] Speaker 1: the family of Abraham, Moses, David, and so many other heroes.
[7:10] Speaker 2: Of the Old Testament.
[7:12] Speaker 1: You see, at this time, they still believed that only
[7:16] Speaker 1: Jews could know and follow God. They believed that God
[7:20] Speaker 1: only loved this one chosen group of people. Little did
[7:24] Speaker 1: they know, Jesus would soon change all that. Our second
[7:28] Speaker 1: story today shows us how much God cares about our sadness.
[7:33] Speaker 1: This woman whose husband had died was crying because now
[7:36] Speaker 1: her only son had died too. She was going to
[7:40] Speaker 1: be left all alone and no one to take care
[7:42] Speaker 1: of her. She was so sad and missing her son
[7:46] Speaker 1: so very, very much. When Jesus saw her, the Bible
[7:51] Speaker 1: said he had compassion on her. Compassion means that you
[7:55] Speaker 1: feel the sadness of another person. You see someone crying
[7:59] Speaker 1: and you feel what that person feels. You want to
[8:02] Speaker 1: cry too. Many verses in the Bible talk about God's compassion.
[8:08] Speaker 1: You can trust that when you're going through a hard time,
[8:11] Speaker 1: God feels for you and carries your sadness. After Jesus
[8:16] Speaker 1: touched this widow's son and he awoke from the dead,
[8:19] Speaker 1: the Bible says that the people were afraid and glorified God.
[8:24] Speaker 1: What do you think made them afraid? I think they
[8:27] Speaker 1: knew how big, powerful, and in charge Jesus was. They
[8:33] Speaker 1: knew that God had come to them in the most
[8:35] Speaker 1: unusual way through Jesus. In thinking about seeing God face
[8:39] Speaker 1: to face on earth seemed a little scary, but in
[8:44] Speaker 1: a good way. Now the only thing left to do
[8:48] Speaker 1: was worship him. Thanks for listening today. Always remember that
[8:53] Speaker 1: just like the centurion, you can go to Jesus anytime
[8:57] Speaker 1: you need. I hope you'll be back next time as
[9:00] Speaker 1: we hear about an important dinner party and a woman
[9:03] Speaker 1: who did something very surprising there. Don't forget, the Bible
[9:08] Speaker 1: is the best story ever told. It's God's story to you.
[9:12] Speaker 1: And it's all true. Had a blast with our podcast?
