[1:13] Speaker 3: Jesus and His Ministry In our last story, we saw
[1:18] Speaker 3: Jesus speaking with a Samaritan woman on His way to
[1:22] Speaker 3: Galilee and gave her living water. In this story, Jesus
[1:28] Speaker 3: will arrive in Galilee and began his ministry of preaching
[1:32] Speaker 3: and healing, and even returned to teach in his hometown
[1:37] Speaker 3: of Nazareth, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:48] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[1:51] Speaker 1: so happy you're here today. In this story, we get
[1:55] Speaker 1: to hear what happens when Jesus goes to visit his
[1:58] Speaker 1: friends at home. and how they were surprised and not
[2:02] Speaker 1: very happy to hear what he said. Well, let's jump in.
[2:09] Speaker 3: Jesus went to Galilee when he found out that John
[2:12] Speaker 3: the Baptist had been thrown into prison. Jesus arrived and
[2:16] Speaker 3: taught the people. The people in Galilee welcomed him and
[2:20] Speaker 3: saw everything he had done during the Passover festival in Jerusalem.
[2:25] Speaker 3: He then visited Cana. the place where he had turned
[2:28] Speaker 3: water into wine, and a royal official was there who
[2:32] Speaker 3: had a very sick son. So he begged Jesus to
[2:36] Speaker 3: heal his son because he was dying. Jesus said, You
[2:41] Speaker 3: people do not believe unless you see signs and wonders.
[2:46] Speaker 3: The man asked him to please come before his son dies.
[2:50] Speaker 3: Jesus said, Go, and he will live. The man headed
[2:55] Speaker 3: back home, and ran into one of his servants on
[2:58] Speaker 3: the way. The servant told him that the boy was fine,
[3:01] Speaker 3: and it was in the afternoon that the fever went away.
[3:05] Speaker 3: The man realized his son was healed at the same
[3:08] Speaker 3: time Jesus told him his son would be healed. So
[3:12] Speaker 3: he and his family believed. That was the second sign
[3:17] Speaker 3: that Jesus performed after coming to Galilee. He moved away
[3:22] Speaker 3: from Nazareth and decided to live in Capernaum, which fulfilled
[3:26] Speaker 3: what Isaiah had prophesied, Jesus started to preach and said,
[3:32] Speaker 3: Everyone needs to confess their sins, for the kingdom of
[3:36] Speaker 3: heaven is coming soon. News spread as Jesus was teaching
[3:41] Speaker 3: in synagogues, and one Sabbath he was in the synagogue
[3:45] Speaker 3: of his hometown of Nazareth. Everyone listened to him and
[3:49] Speaker 3: enjoyed his teachings. On Sabbath, Jesus read from the scroll
[3:54] Speaker 3: of Isaiah, And it said, The Spirit of the Lord
[3:58] Speaker 3: is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim
[4:01] Speaker 3: the good news to the poor. He has sent me
[4:05] Speaker 3: to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight
[4:09] Speaker 3: for the blind, to set the oppressed free, and to
[4:13] Speaker 3: proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Jesus handed the
[4:17] Speaker 3: scroll to someone in the synagogue and sat with the people.
[4:21] Speaker 3: He said to them, The Scripture has been fulfilled today.
[4:25] Speaker 3: as you were listening. Everyone asked, Isn't he Joseph's son?
[4:31] Speaker 3: Jesus said to them, You want me to perform miracles
[4:35] Speaker 3: here in my hometown like I have in other places.
[4:39] Speaker 3: But no prophet is accepted in their own hometown. When
[4:44] Speaker 3: Elijah was here, God sent him to a Gentile widow.
[4:48] Speaker 3: There were many sick with leprosy in Israel, but Elisha
[4:53] Speaker 3: was only sent to heal one, another Gentile, Naaman. All
[5:00] Speaker 3: the people were very mad when they heard this. They
[5:04] Speaker 3: made him leave town and tried to throw him off
[5:08] Speaker 3: a cliff. But Jesus walked through the crowd and left.
[5:18] Speaker 1: Old neighbors? An angry mob? And Jesus almost going over
[5:23] Speaker 1: a cliff?
[5:24] Speaker 3: Whoa!
[5:25] Speaker 1: Today's story had a lot going on. But every story
[5:29] Speaker 1: about Jesus tells us something about God. So let's see
[5:33] Speaker 1: what this story tells us. Jesus had been doing a
[5:37] Speaker 1: lot of unexpected things, hasn't he? Between Jerusalem, Samaria, and Galilee,
[5:43] Speaker 1: he's been bending a lot of rules. Now, you know
[5:47] Speaker 1: the world we live in has physical rules, right? Like gravity.
[5:51] Speaker 1: Gravity is what makes things fall to the ground, not
[5:54] Speaker 1: stay up in the air when you drop them. And
[5:57] Speaker 1: because things always fall when you drop them, we call
[6:00] Speaker 1: this the law of gravity. Well, when Jesus was doing miracles,
[6:05] Speaker 1: he was bending physical laws. It was like super science.
[6:10] Speaker 1: But since he made the world, he knew how to
[6:13] Speaker 1: do it. When he turned water into wine, he just
[6:16] Speaker 1: switched all the molecules around. And when he healed people,
[6:20] Speaker 1: like the royal official's son, he probably told all those
[6:24] Speaker 1: germs causing that fever just to get on out of there.
[6:28] Speaker 1: To the people, all this bending of physical rules looked
[6:32] Speaker 1: like miracles. And they loved it. It made everyone excited
[6:37] Speaker 1: to be around him. They wanted to see Jesus do
[6:40] Speaker 1: cool tricks or fix all their problems. But is that
[6:44] Speaker 1: why Jesus came? No! Jesus also started bending social rules. Now,
[6:51] Speaker 1: you know that our cultures have social rules, right? Like manners.
[6:55] Speaker 1: They make people say, bless you when you sneeze or
[6:58] Speaker 1: keep your mouth closed when you chew. There are other
[7:01] Speaker 1: social rules too, and they're what make our communities work
[7:05] Speaker 1: the way they do. Well, when Jesus did things like
[7:09] Speaker 1: speaking to the Samaritan woman... or calling regular guys, not
[7:13] Speaker 1: super religious guys, to be his followers, Jesus was bending
[7:18] Speaker 1: social rules. Nobody expected him to love the people no
[7:22] Speaker 1: one else even liked or respected the ones everybody else
[7:26] Speaker 1: laughed at. But since he made those people, he couldn't
[7:31] Speaker 1: help but love them. The people weren't sure what to
[7:34] Speaker 1: think about this, especially in Jesus' hometown of Nazareth. When
[7:39] Speaker 1: he came home to visit, All the people who had
[7:42] Speaker 1: known him since he was a little boy had heard
[7:44] Speaker 1: what he'd done in Canaan and Galilee. And they probably
[7:48] Speaker 1: expected him to bend a few rules and do them
[7:52] Speaker 1: some special favors. Hey, Jesus, we go way back. I've
[7:56] Speaker 1: got this crick in my neck. Can you do something
[7:58] Speaker 1: about that? Hey, Jesus, I'd love to have you over
[8:02] Speaker 1: for dinner, but I haven't been able to go to
[8:05] Speaker 1: the market. Can you bring the wine? And like many,
[8:08] Speaker 1: many people, They have wanted to see Jesus do tricks
[8:12] Speaker 1: or fix all their problems. But is that why Jesus came? No.
[8:19] Speaker 1: Jesus had actually come to break religious rules. And that's
[8:23] Speaker 1: what he told everybody in the synagogue that day. When
[8:27] Speaker 1: he read the scroll, he applied Isaiah's words to himself.
[8:32] Speaker 1: The spirit of the Lord is on me, Jesus.
[8:35] Speaker 3: Yes.
[8:36] Speaker 1: Because he anointed me, Jesus, to proclaim the good news
[8:40] Speaker 1: to the poor. He has sent me, Jesus, to proclaim
[8:43] Speaker 1: freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,
[8:48] Speaker 1: to set the oppressed free, and to proclaim the year
[8:50] Speaker 1: of the Lord's favor. You see, all of Jesus' rule-breaking
[8:56] Speaker 1: was so that everyone could hear God's good news and
[9:00] Speaker 1: see God's truth and experience God's freedom. Rules would never
[9:05] Speaker 1: again keep anybody out of God's favor. But no one
[9:10] Speaker 1: would get special treatment to get into God's favor either.
[9:13] Speaker 1: Not the Jews, not the religious people, not even people
[9:17] Speaker 1: from Nazareth who went way back with Jesus. But he
[9:21] Speaker 1: wouldn't do tricks or fix all their problems because he
[9:24] Speaker 1: wanted to give them so much more. Something new and
[9:28] Speaker 1: unexpected was happening. No matter who you were, everybody now
[9:33] Speaker 1: welcome in God's kingdom. And everyone would get into it
[9:38] Speaker 1: the same way through Jesus. That's why he came. I
[9:43] Speaker 1: am so happy you joined me today. Come back next
[9:46] Speaker 1: time to hear how Jesus told his followers to do
[9:49] Speaker 1: something funny. To go fishing for people. Remember, the Bible
