[1:30] Speaker 3: Paul's First Letter to the Church in Corinth, Part 2.
[1:35] Speaker 3: In our last story, we learned about the first half
[1:38] Speaker 3: of Paul's letter to the Corinthians and the concerns he
[1:41] Speaker 3: had about their unity and immorality.
[1:44] Speaker 4: In this story, we.
[1:46] Speaker 3: Resume the letter and hear Paul's heart about how they
[1:49] Speaker 3: can live in a way which builds each other up,
[1:53] Speaker 3: as inspired by 1 Corinthians.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[2:03] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[2:06] Speaker 1: am so glad you're here today. In this story, we
[2:10] Speaker 1: get to hear some of the word pictures Paul paints
[2:13] Speaker 1: as he helps his friends in Corinth understand how to
[2:16] Speaker 1: really live for Jesus. You ready? Let's listen.
[2:24] Speaker 5: We all have knowledge, but this knowledge can build pride.
[2:28] Speaker 5: Love builds us up.
[2:30] Speaker 4: If you think you know everything, you are foolish. If
[2:33] Speaker 4: you love God, you are known by God.
[2:37] Speaker 5: Many people worship idols, but there is only one God.
[2:41] Speaker 5: Many things are called gods, but we know there is
[2:45] Speaker 5: only one God who created everything.
[2:48] Speaker 4: Not everyone understands this truth.
[2:50] Speaker 5: Some people eat food that has been offered to idols
[2:53] Speaker 5: as worship. The food is not the issue. but the
[2:57] Speaker 5: heart of the person eating the food. If you feel
[3:00] Speaker 5: guilty about eating.
[3:01] Speaker 4: The food, you should not eat it.
[3:03] Speaker 5: Also, if eating the food causes someone else to feel guilty,
[3:06] Speaker 5: you should not eat it.
[3:09] Speaker 4: If you cause your brother to feel guilty, you are sinning.
[3:13] Speaker 5: Am I not a messenger of God? Have I not
[3:16] Speaker 5: seen Jesus? You all are the proof that I am
[3:20] Speaker 5: a messenger of God. Many people question if I am
[3:24] Speaker 5: a true messenger of God. Have I not done everything
[3:27] Speaker 5: I can to keep myself free.
[3:29] Speaker 4: To share the good news?
[3:31] Speaker 5: I have shared the gospel freely without taking anything from
[3:35] Speaker 5: those I have shared to. I saw this not only
[3:39] Speaker 5: from my own ideas, but from the law of Moses.
[3:43] Speaker 5: We have given great spiritual gifts to you. Could we
[3:46] Speaker 5: not ask for money? We could, but we will not.
[3:50] Speaker 5: We would never want for you to think that we
[3:53] Speaker 5: are only sharing the message of Jesus so we can
[3:55] Speaker 5: make a profit. I must preach the gospel, and I
[3:59] Speaker 5: will do so free of charge. I will be a
[4:02] Speaker 5: servant to all people to bring them to the gospel.
[4:07] Speaker 5: To each group of people near and far from God,
[4:09] Speaker 5: I share the gospel in.
[4:10] Speaker 4: A way that they could understand.
[4:13] Speaker 5: I acted weak around those who were weak so I
[4:16] Speaker 5: could share the good news with them. I desire to
[4:20] Speaker 5: save all people, Your life is like a race, and
[4:24] Speaker 5: you must run to win. You must also practice self-control
[4:28] Speaker 5: in your training. This race is not a physical one,
[4:31] Speaker 5: but a spiritual one. Even though I preach the gospel,
[4:36] Speaker 5: I must make sure that I have a healthy spiritual life.
[4:40] Speaker 5: Our spiritual fathers were all founded in Christ, but they
[4:44] Speaker 5: often lost their way. We must not desire evil like
[4:48] Speaker 5: them or worship idols. We cannot complain or distrust God.
[4:52] Speaker 5: We must not be too confident in our own holiness.
[4:57] Speaker 5: God is the one who will protect us and give
[4:59] Speaker 5: us the power to overcome sin.
[5:02] Speaker 4: Be far away from idols.
[5:04] Speaker 5: You cannot be a part of the family of God
[5:07] Speaker 5: and also try to worship idols. When people worship these idols,
[5:10] Speaker 5: they are actually worshiping demons. You cannot take communication and
[5:16] Speaker 5: also worship idols. You can do many things, but they
[5:20] Speaker 5: are not all good for you.
[5:23] Speaker 4: Treat others better than yourself. You do not have to.
[5:26] Speaker 5: Worry about what you eat, for God created everything. When
[5:30] Speaker 5: someone serves you food, eat whatever they give you. However,
[5:34] Speaker 5: if someone is offended by what you eat, then do
[5:37] Speaker 5: not eat it. Your freedom should not make someone else
[5:40] Speaker 5: feel guilty.
[5:42] Speaker 4: In everything, give glory to God. Be at peace with everyone.
[5:47] Speaker 4: I also try to put others first. I am glad
[5:50] Speaker 4: that you have followed the instructions I gave you.
[5:53] Speaker 5: Jesus is the head of a husband, and a husband
[5:56] Speaker 5: is the head of his wife. Men should not cover
[5:59] Speaker 5: their heads when praying. for they were created in God's image.
[6:03] Speaker 5: Women should cover their heads when praying. In some areas,
[6:08] Speaker 5: you are very unhealthy. When you gather, I hear that
[6:12] Speaker 5: there is a fighting going on. Also, when you eat together,
[6:16] Speaker 5: you do not share your food. You only care for yourself.
[6:22] Speaker 5: When you gather together, remember my body that was crucified
[6:25] Speaker 5: by taking and eating pieces of bread. Remember my blood
[6:29] Speaker 5: that was shed Remember the return of Christ as you
[6:32] Speaker 5: eat the bread and drink the cup. If you do
[6:35] Speaker 5: so in a wrong manner, you bring judgment upon yourself.
[6:39] Speaker 5: If you are speaking in the Spirit of God, you
[6:42] Speaker 5: will honor Jesus. There are many gifts of the Spirit,
[6:45] Speaker 5: but only one Spirit. There are many ways to serve God,
[6:50] Speaker 5: but only one God.
[6:51] Speaker 4: All of these gifts should be used to bless the
[6:54] Speaker 4: whole community. We are all different, but we make up
[6:58] Speaker 4: the same.
[6:59] Speaker 5: Family of God, We must be happy with the part
[7:02] Speaker 5: that we play in the body of Christ. We must
[7:04] Speaker 5: work together to be a healthy body. We cannot talk
[7:08] Speaker 5: badly about other parts of the.
[7:10] Speaker 4: Family, for all need each other.
[7:13] Speaker 5: When one person is in pain, we must all cry
[7:16] Speaker 5: with them. When one person is happy, we must all cheer.
[7:20] Speaker 5: No people have the same spiritual gifts, but we should
[7:23] Speaker 5: seek all of them. I can be wise and spiritual,
[7:27] Speaker 5: but if I do not love people, I have no hope.
[7:30] Speaker 5: Love is kindness rejoicing with truth. Love can stand through anything.
[7:36] Speaker 5: The spiritual gifts will pass away one day, but love
[7:39] Speaker 5: will never leave. There are faith, hope, and love, and
[7:43] Speaker 5: love is the greatest. Seek both love and spiritual gifts.
[7:49] Speaker 5: I hope that you use your spiritual gifts to build
[7:52] Speaker 5: up the family of God. You can speak in tongues,
[7:55] Speaker 5: but if an interpretation is not given, then people will
[7:58] Speaker 5: be confused. You should also pray to be able to
[8:01] Speaker 5: interpret tongues. Those from the outside will not be reached
[8:05] Speaker 5: if they cannot understand the message. Be innocent in your character,
[8:09] Speaker 5: but mature in your thinking. Be wise with how you
[8:13] Speaker 5: use the gift of tongues. When you gather, worship me
[8:16] Speaker 5: and build up the family of God. Do not go
[8:19] Speaker 5: overboard with your focus on tongues, for God also loves order.
[8:24] Speaker 5: Women should speak with their husbands about the matters of
[8:27] Speaker 5: the church.
[8:28] Speaker 4: Seek the gifts and do so in order. Do not
[8:32] Speaker 4: forget the gospel I preached to you. Christ died, was
[8:36] Speaker 4: raised to life, and appeared to many people in Israel.
[8:40] Speaker 5: He even appeared to me, someone who used to hate
[8:44] Speaker 5: the family of God. Now I preach the gospel and
[8:47] Speaker 5: people believe. Because Christ was raised, one day the dead
[8:51] Speaker 5: too will be raised. Our hope and trust in God
[8:55] Speaker 5: is the resurrection of Christ. Through Adam, mankind died, but
[8:59] Speaker 5: through Christ, we gain back life. Christ will come and
[9:03] Speaker 5: conquer the evil ones and rule over his enemies. Everything
[9:07] Speaker 5: will be under the control of God. I can do
[9:09] Speaker 5: many things for God, but my hope is in the resurrection.
[9:14] Speaker 5: I must be around good friends who keep me from sin.
[9:18] Speaker 5: When you die and are resurrected one day, you will
[9:21] Speaker 5: receive a new body which God has made for you.
[9:24] Speaker 5: That which is evil and temporary will not be resurrected.
[9:27] Speaker 5: but that which is good will be glorified. We were
[9:31] Speaker 5: created by dust, but one day we will be created
[9:34] Speaker 5: in the full image of God. Those who focus on
[9:37] Speaker 5: their physical bodies cannot inherit the kingdom of God and
[9:40] Speaker 5: Christ will return quickly. We must be ready and we
[9:44] Speaker 5: will receive a body which will never die. We have
[9:48] Speaker 5: victory over sin through Jesus. Stay steady with your commitment
[9:53] Speaker 5: to God. I plan to visit you and spend some
[9:56] Speaker 5: time with you all if God leads.
[9:58] Speaker 4: Me to do so. Welcome Timothy for he also shares
[10:02] Speaker 4: the gospel.
[10:03] Speaker 5: Bless him as it is he who is with you
[10:06] Speaker 5: and when he leaves look out. Remain strong and stay
[10:11] Speaker 5: in love. Follow those who are leading you in the faith.
[10:15] Speaker 5: I send my greetings and my love. I, Paul. In today's.
[10:36] Speaker 1: Story, we heard more from Paul about how we can
[10:39] Speaker 1: follow Jesus in every area of our lives. Paul was
[10:43] Speaker 1: writing to his friends in Corinth, reminding everybody how to
[10:47] Speaker 1: act like God's people. You see, even in the very
[10:51] Speaker 1: first churches, people were selfish and proud, thinking mostly of
[10:56] Speaker 1: themselves and what they wanted, not what others wanted or
[11:01] Speaker 1: even what God wanted. And Paul is trying to explain
[11:04] Speaker 1: that living as a Christian is not just about doing
[11:08] Speaker 1: things for yourself. It's about sharing God's love with others.
[11:12] Speaker 1: And many times that means choosing to be generous, selfless,
[11:16] Speaker 1: and humble. So Paul paints three pictures with his words
[11:21] Speaker 1: to help the Corinthians understand what he means. Let's take
[11:25] Speaker 1: a look at them. His first word picture is of
[11:28] Speaker 1: an athlete. Maybe you're an athlete too. Is there a
[11:32] Speaker 1: sport you love to play? Maybe soccer or basketball? Do
[11:37] Speaker 1: you dance or do gymnastics? If you do, you probably
[11:42] Speaker 1: know that you need to practice or train.
[11:45] Speaker 5: A lot.
[11:46] Speaker 1: Because that's how everybody gets better at playing a sport
[11:49] Speaker 1: or an instrument. Or anything at all. Practice, practice, practice.
[11:54] Speaker 1: And Paul says being a Christian is like being an
[11:56] Speaker 1: athlete who's preparing for the most important competition ever. Like
[12:01] Speaker 1: a runner getting ready for the Olympics. If you want
[12:04] Speaker 1: to win a gold medal... don't just sit around on
[12:08] Speaker 1: the couch watching other people run. No, you get out
[12:12] Speaker 1: there and you run and you do the very best
[12:16] Speaker 1: you can. Being a Christian isn't just about watching your
[12:19] Speaker 1: pastor tell people about Jesus or the worship leader sing
[12:24] Speaker 1: or your Sunday school teacher pray. It's about you doing
[12:28] Speaker 1: all those things too. The very best you can. God
[12:32] Speaker 1: wants us to live the Christian life as if it
[12:35] Speaker 1: was an Olympic sport. And we all want the gold medal. Now,
[12:39] Speaker 1: Paul's second word picture is of crashing cymbals. Have you
[12:44] Speaker 1: ever heard a marching band play? If you have, you
[12:47] Speaker 1: know that the flutes start toodling and tubas start oomping
[12:51] Speaker 1: and the drums start rattle-tattling louder and louder and louder
[12:54] Speaker 1: until the cymbals go crash and everyone cheers. Cymbals are exciting,
[13:01] Speaker 1: but they only play one note. You can't play a
[13:05] Speaker 1: whole song on the cymbals. And Paul says that if
[13:08] Speaker 1: you're living your Christian life like an Olympic athlete, sharing Jesus, singing, praying,
[13:14] Speaker 1: and doing everything the Bible says as best as you can,
[13:18] Speaker 1: but you don't have love for other people, you're like
[13:22] Speaker 1: a musical instrument that can't play a song. Just one
[13:26] Speaker 1: big loud noise. Love is more important than anything else
[13:31] Speaker 1: because God himself is love. And when you love others,
[13:35] Speaker 1: you're showing them what God is like. He's patient and kind,
[13:39] Speaker 1: not easily angered, but quick to forgive, always protecting, always hoping,
[13:44] Speaker 1: and always holding on. God never fails. And while we're
[13:49] Speaker 1: all sharing Jesus, worshiping, praying, and serving others with love,
[13:54] Speaker 1: Paul reminds us not to get proud or jealous of others.
[13:57] Speaker 1: He does it with his last word picture, the picture
[14:00] Speaker 1: of a body. It can be easy to look at
[14:03] Speaker 1: what others are doing for Jesus and feel badly, especially
[14:08] Speaker 1: if someone else's strength is your weakness. If your friend
[14:11] Speaker 1: sings beautifully and you think you sound like a frog,
[14:15] Speaker 1: you might worry that God gave your friend a better
[14:18] Speaker 1: gift than he gave you. But Paul says, no, all
[14:22] Speaker 1: of God's gifts and all of God's children are equally important.
[14:27] Speaker 1: How silly would it be if your eyes said, hey,
[14:31] Speaker 1: I can't see everything. I don't need hands anymore. Or
[14:35] Speaker 1: if your head said, all the thinking is covered, so
[14:38] Speaker 1: let's get rid of those feet. Every part of your
[14:42] Speaker 1: body matters. So every member of God's body matters too.
[14:47] Speaker 1: And that's you. I am so happy you joined me today.
[14:51] Speaker 1: Come back next time to hear what Paul says when
[14:53] Speaker 1: he writes a second letter to his friends in Corinth. Remember,
[14:58] Speaker 1: the Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
[15:01] Speaker 1: story to you. And it's all true. Found joy in
