[0:00] Speaker 1: You are the light of the world. A city located
[0:04] Speaker 1: on a hill can't be hidden. Matthew 5, 14. Dear God,
[0:10] Speaker 1: there is so much to learn from your words in
[0:13] Speaker 1: today's story. Help us to live in a way that
[0:16] Speaker 1: pleases you. It's getting so dark in our world, but
[0:20] Speaker 1: you have placed us here to light up the darkness
[0:24] Speaker 1: with your love and truth. Show us how to do
[0:27] Speaker 1: that today.
[0:28] Speaker 2: In Jesus' name. Amen.
[0:30] Speaker 1: And save 20% with code.
[0:33] Speaker 2: BLESSED. Sermon on the Mount. In our last story, Jesus
[1:12] Speaker 2: called the twelve disciples and encouraged them for their mission.
[1:16] Speaker 2: In this story, we will experience Jesus' teaching about the
[1:21] Speaker 2: kingdom of God in what is called the Sermon on
[1:25] Speaker 2: the Mount, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:33] Speaker 1: Hi everyone, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffers Sadler.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Welcome back for another story from the Kids Bible in
[1:41] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. Jesus is about to give us the
[1:45] Speaker 1: best sermon that was ever preached, for real. But you'll
[1:49] Speaker 1: notice that the way he tells us to do things
[1:52] Speaker 1: is very different from the way the world tells us
[1:55] Speaker 1: to live. So it's super important that we pay attention
[1:59] Speaker 1: to his words today. Let's dive in.
[2:04] Speaker 2: Jesus saw a large crowd and went up on a
[2:07] Speaker 2: mountainside to teach them. He began teaching on what it
[2:10] Speaker 2: looks like to follow him and to be a part
[2:13] Speaker 2: of the kingdom of God. All who belong to the
[2:16] Speaker 2: kingdom are to have a godly character, as Jesus explains it.
[2:21] Speaker 2: He began by saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit,
[2:25] Speaker 2: for theirs is in the kingdom of heaven. They will
[2:29] Speaker 2: trust in the Lord, not the world. Blessed are those
[2:34] Speaker 2: who lose what is close to them, for God will
[2:37] Speaker 2: be their comforter. Blessed are the humble, for they understand
[2:41] Speaker 2: what they have is enough, and they will inherit the earth.
[2:45] Speaker 2: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after God. Just
[2:49] Speaker 2: like eating a big meal, they will be filled. Blessed
[2:54] Speaker 2: are those that show mercy and care for others, for
[2:58] Speaker 2: they will be shown mercy. Blessed are those with pure
[3:03] Speaker 2: hearts who have gotten rid of the sin in their
[3:06] Speaker 2: hearts for they will see God. Blessed are those that
[3:11] Speaker 2: show peace instead of arguing and fighting for they will
[3:15] Speaker 2: be called children of God. Blessed are those who are
[3:19] Speaker 2: mistreated because they serve God with their whole lives for
[3:24] Speaker 2: they will have a place in the kingdom of heaven.
[3:28] Speaker 2: Blessed are you when people hurt your feelings and say
[3:32] Speaker 2: mean things about you because of me. Even though you
[3:35] Speaker 2: don't like how it feels, it will be worth it.
[3:39] Speaker 2: Put a smile on your face, and be glad when
[3:42] Speaker 2: this happens, because great is your reward in heaven. Even
[3:47] Speaker 2: prophets and other witnesses were treated like this before you,
[3:51] Speaker 2: and they have received their reward. God has blessed you
[3:56] Speaker 2: so much, and now you are to be salt and
[4:00] Speaker 2: light to your friends and those around you. You are
[4:04] Speaker 2: to be like salt that gives flavor to this world.
[4:08] Speaker 2: If you don't have flavor, how will the world know
[4:11] Speaker 2: that you follow God? The world must see something different
[4:16] Speaker 2: about you. You are also the light that gives light
[4:20] Speaker 2: and color to the world. Don't try to hide this
[4:23] Speaker 2: beautiful light of God. Go out into the streets and
[4:27] Speaker 2: shine bright. I am going to put you on a
[4:31] Speaker 2: hilltop so all can see your love and kindness. Open
[4:36] Speaker 2: up and let them in. Jesus then said, I am
[4:42] Speaker 2: not here to get rid of the law, but rather
[4:45] Speaker 2: to complete it. I am going to put it all
[4:49] Speaker 2: together so that it makes sense to you and so
[4:52] Speaker 2: that you can live by it. You must hear what
[4:56] Speaker 2: I say to you and live by it. so that
[4:59] Speaker 2: you can do far better than the Pharisees and enter
[5:02] Speaker 2: the kingdom of God. You know the law that says,
[5:07] Speaker 2: do not murder. But I tell you that anyone who
[5:11] Speaker 2: is angry with his friend is guilty of murder. Be
[5:15] Speaker 2: careful with the words that you say. They have the
[5:18] Speaker 2: power to uplift or destroy someone. The law also says,
[5:24] Speaker 2: do not commit adultery. But I tell you, not to
[5:28] Speaker 2: even look at someone with lust in your heart. Keep
[5:32] Speaker 2: your promises in relationships and be trustworthy. If your right
[5:37] Speaker 2: eye causes you to sin, then take it out and
[5:39] Speaker 2: throw it away. It is better to lose part of
[5:42] Speaker 2: your body than to lose your whole body to evil.
[5:46] Speaker 2: Don't say words that you don't mean. Your yes should
[5:50] Speaker 2: be yes and your no should be no. Many have
[5:55] Speaker 2: also heard, an eye for an eye and a tooth
[5:58] Speaker 2: for a tooth. I tell you, if someone slaps you
[6:02] Speaker 2: on the cheek, turn and let them slap the other
[6:05] Speaker 2: cheek too. Don't hit back. You are to love your
[6:09] Speaker 2: enemies and pray for those who do wrong to you. Also,
[6:14] Speaker 2: be careful to not make a performance out of the
[6:17] Speaker 2: good things that you do. When you serve someone out
[6:21] Speaker 2: of kindness, don't call attention to yourself. Don't think about
[6:26] Speaker 2: how you look. Rather, serve others quietly. Then your Father,
[6:31] Speaker 2: who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
[6:36] Speaker 2: When you pray, don't make it dramatic and loud. Go
[6:40] Speaker 2: into your quiet room, close the door, and pray to
[6:44] Speaker 2: your Father who is unseen. You don't have to try
[6:48] Speaker 2: and get God's attention. Your Father, who sees what is
[6:53] Speaker 2: done in secret... will reward you. Also do not store
[6:58] Speaker 2: up for yourself treasures on earth, but store up for
[7:02] Speaker 2: yourselves treasures in heaven where they will not be destroyed
[7:07] Speaker 2: and where thieves do not break in and steal. Jesus
[7:12] Speaker 2: teaches that where your treasure is, there your heart will
[7:17] Speaker 2: also be. Money and God are two masters. No one
[7:22] Speaker 2: can serve two Either the person will hate one and
[7:27] Speaker 2: love the other, or they will love one and hate
[7:31] Speaker 2: the other. You cannot worship both God and money. Be
[7:36] Speaker 2: on the watch and don't worry about daily needs like
[7:40] Speaker 2: food and clothes. Look around you. God takes care of
[7:45] Speaker 2: every detail, like the birds of the air and the
[7:48] Speaker 2: flowers in the field. Do not worry about tomorrow. for
[7:53] Speaker 2: tomorrow will worry about itself. Focus on each moment and
[7:59] Speaker 2: trust that God is taking care of you. Focus on
[8:04] Speaker 2: God and he will meet your everyday concerns. Many of
[8:08] Speaker 2: you look to others and judge them. I tell you,
[8:12] Speaker 2: do not judge or you too will be judged. Why
[8:16] Speaker 2: do you look at the little speck in your brother's
[8:19] Speaker 2: eye but ignore the plank in your own It is
[8:23] Speaker 2: easy to find the fault in your friend, but completely
[8:26] Speaker 2: miss the big faults in your own life. Instead of
[8:30] Speaker 2: judging others, give to them generously. Whatever you want others
[8:36] Speaker 2: to do for you, do it for them. If you
[8:40] Speaker 2: are going to be my disciples, do what I say.
[8:44] Speaker 2: There are two roads ahead of you. One is narrow
[8:47] Speaker 2: and less traveled, while the other is wide and often traveled.
[8:52] Speaker 2: But small is the gate and narrow is the road
[8:55] Speaker 2: that leads to eternal life, and only few find it.
[8:59] Speaker 2: It's similar to the two men who built a house.
[9:03] Speaker 2: One man built his house on the sand, and when
[9:05] Speaker 2: the rain came and the winds blew, it fell with
[9:09] Speaker 2: a great crash. But the man who built his house
[9:12] Speaker 2: on the rock was a wise man, because when the
[9:16] Speaker 2: rains came and the winds blew, his house did not fall.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Follow the narrow road that leads to eternal life and
[9:25] Speaker 2: build your life on the firm foundation of God. When
[9:31] Speaker 2: Jesus finished teaching, the crowds were amazed at what he
[9:35] Speaker 2: had said. They realized that he taught with so much
[9:40] Speaker 2: authority that no other teacher of the law had ever done.
[9:51] Speaker 1: Jesus gave so much to talk about today. This was
[9:55] Speaker 1: what many called the greatest sermon ever preached. The Sermon
[10:00] Speaker 1: on the Mount. A lot of people came to hear
[10:04] Speaker 1: Jesus teach. They felt lost, as if they didn't know
[10:08] Speaker 1: how to be right with God. Because keeping the law
[10:11] Speaker 1: and being perfect wasn't working out too well. How are
[10:15] Speaker 1: we supposed to live and what did God want them
[10:18] Speaker 1: to do? Jesus was about to show them. This sermon
[10:23] Speaker 1: begins with some short sayings called the Beatitudes. Now, when
[10:27] Speaker 1: Jesus says, blessed are you when, he isn't talking about
[10:32] Speaker 1: being happy. He's saying when you live this way, you
[10:35] Speaker 1: will feel amazing peace and love deep inside your heart.
[10:41] Speaker 1: Let's take a look at each of these Beatitudes. Blessed
[10:46] Speaker 1: are the poor in spirit, Someone who is poor in
[10:49] Speaker 1: spirit is someone who understands how much they need God.
[10:54] Speaker 1: We can't do anything without Him. Blessed are those who mourn.
[10:59] Speaker 1: There are many things on this earth that will make
[11:02] Speaker 1: us sad. Jesus says when we're feeling sad, He will
[11:06] Speaker 1: help us and comfort us. Blessed are the gentle. Being
[11:11] Speaker 1: gentle or meek means not thinking about ourselves but thinking
[11:15] Speaker 1: of others. It means not getting loud and mad when
[11:19] Speaker 1: things don't go our way. You can be strong and kind.
[11:24] Speaker 1: That's what meekness means. Blessed are those who hunger and
[11:29] Speaker 1: thirst for righteousness. Can you be hungry for righteousness? Sure
[11:35] Speaker 1: you can. It means you want to do the right
[11:37] Speaker 1: thing for God in the same way you want to
[11:40] Speaker 1: have a yummy meal. Jesus promised that when we do that,
[11:44] Speaker 1: he will fill us up with joy. Blessed are the merciful.
[11:49] Speaker 1: When we are quick to forgive others and not stay mad,
[11:53] Speaker 1: God will forgive us for all the wrong things we
[11:56] Speaker 1: do and forget all about. Blessed are the pure in heart.
[12:02] Speaker 1: Being pure in heart is filling our lives with things
[12:05] Speaker 1: that are good instead of things that are bad. And
[12:09] Speaker 1: enjoying the beautiful things God has given you with a
[12:13] Speaker 1: grateful heart. Blessed are the peacemakers. A peacemaker is just
[12:18] Speaker 1: how it sounds. Someone who makes peace when people are
[12:22] Speaker 1: mad or fighting. It means letting things go and helping
[12:27] Speaker 1: others get along. Blessed are those who have been persecuted
[12:32] Speaker 1: for righteousness' sake. This last beatitude is such a special
[12:37] Speaker 1: promise from God. Sometimes you might get treated badly for
[12:41] Speaker 1: loving God and doing the right thing. When this happens,
[12:46] Speaker 1: God sees... And he says that your reward in heaven
[12:50] Speaker 1: will be great. Next, Jesus tells us that his followers
[12:55] Speaker 1: on earth, we need to be two things. The first
[12:59] Speaker 1: is salt. Think about what salt does. It makes your
[13:02] Speaker 1: food taste a lot better. It also helps food stay
[13:06] Speaker 1: fresh longer. Jesus is saying that the words we say
[13:10] Speaker 1: and the things we do should make people feel better,
[13:14] Speaker 1: not worse. Our words and actions should bless others and
[13:18] Speaker 1: preserve what's good. The next is light. Well, we all
[13:24] Speaker 1: know how important that is. This world is getting dark.
[13:29] Speaker 1: That means it's moving away from God. But Jesus says
[13:33] Speaker 1: he wants us to light up the world around us.
[13:36] Speaker 1: How do we do that? By loving and serving others
[13:41] Speaker 1: and by telling them about how great our God is.
[13:44] Speaker 1: And what Jesus did for us on the cross. Next,
[13:48] Speaker 1: in this sermon, Jesus gives us one of his upside
[13:52] Speaker 1: down teachings. The world would tell you that when someone
[13:57] Speaker 1: hits you, hit them back harder. Get back at your
[14:01] Speaker 1: enemies every chance you get. But in this sermon, Jesus
[14:05] Speaker 1: says the opposite. He says to love those who are
[14:09] Speaker 1: mean to you. Be kind to those who are not
[14:12] Speaker 1: kind to you. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. That's
[14:16] Speaker 1: not easy. But remember, we don't do it on our own.
[14:20] Speaker 1: God does it through us. Next, Jesus reminds us not
[14:25] Speaker 1: to do good things so others will notice. That's not
[14:29] Speaker 1: the right reason and not keeping our hearts focused on God. Instead,
[14:34] Speaker 1: Jesus says to do kind things in secret. Think of
[14:39] Speaker 1: it as a little secret between you and Almighty God.
[14:44] Speaker 1: The creator of the world who made you. Try it today.
[14:49] Speaker 1: Write someone a note. Give someone a gift. Or maybe
[14:53] Speaker 1: even do the dishes. But don't tell anyone it was you.
[14:58] Speaker 1: Then you'll have a little secret that's just between you
[15:02] Speaker 1: and God. He will be so proud of you. Today's
[15:06] Speaker 1: story ends with the picture of a house built on
[15:10] Speaker 1: a rock. That rock is God.
[15:13] Speaker 2: His word.
[15:14] Speaker 1: And all his promises to you. If you focus on
[15:18] Speaker 1: those things, when storms or bad times come, your house
[15:24] Speaker 1: or your life will stand strong on the rock. Thanks
[15:28] Speaker 1: for listening. Come back next time to hear about some
[15:31] Speaker 1: men who were so desperate to get to Jesus that
[15:34] Speaker 1: they cut a hole in the roof. Here we go.
